meliodas has a deep respect for life. he doesn't want to kill anybody and he doesn't want anybody to die.

but he does. on some level deep down he wants to kill everyone.

he doesn't want to but he will still kill if he determines he has a good enough reason to, primarily if it's to fight for the sake of other people and save them. otherwise, he tries to avoid inflicting death if he can, even at a detriment to himself. he'd rather believe that everyone can be saved if given the opportunity at least once. it's his own way of trying to break the cycle of needless violence he was trapped in since day one and it's a choice he makes every day.

it's part of the reason he's terrified to go back to the demon he used to be. he is afraid of that loss of control and the values he's fought so hard to build up. because all of that goes out the window. the torch of the ideals he's carried for so long of everyone who has gone would be put out and in a way they die all over again with it. life will no longer carry that same meaning for him, and he will be indiscriminate in the lives he cuts down. rather than a blaze where something new can be rebuilt from the ashes, he'd become a black hole absorbing any flicker of light. he will not be a empathetic, understanding, almost kind death. he will be a detached, cruel and sudden death, like the demon king himself. exactly as his father raised him to be.

These birds reminded me strangely of crows, though they looked nothing like them.
