Case Study: Automating the Activation of Standby Database in Read-Write Mode for Testing and Report Collection

Client needs MIS reports to run on a dedicated server from 8 am to 8 pm for real-time access to the latest data, alleviating the load on the production database. Outside these hours, the MIS server transitions into recovery mode.

Client Requirement: To alleviate the load on the production database, the client needs MIS reports to run on a dedicated server, ensuring real-time access to the latest data. The MIS server is set to read/write mode from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm specifically for generating MIS reports. Outside of these hours, the MIS server shifts into recovery mode.

Challenge:In the ever-evolving realm of database management, maintaining uninterrupted testing and reporting while safeguarding production server performance poses a significant hurdle. Acknowledging this concern, our client presented us with a precise demand: the standby database should function in read-write mode for testing while seamlessly collecting reports without compromising efficiency.

To tackle this challenge, we deployed Dbvisit within our client's infrastructure, encompassing both a production database and a standby database. The frequent need for testing and report collection from the production server prompted our intervention, as executing these tasks directly on the production server resulted in performance bottlenecks.

Solution:Dbvisit provided an effective resolution by enabling the standby database to be activated and restored as necessary. Our recommended strategy involved transforming the standby database into read-write mode (activating the standby database) for testing purposes. After completing the required tasks, the database could be switched back to mount mode (restoring the standby database), and Dbvisit seamlessly applied logs automatically. To streamline this procedure, we implemented a scheduled cronjob. Between 8 am and 8 pm, the standby database would function in read-write mode (activated standby), allowing the client to perform tests and retrieve data efficiently. Subsequently, from 8 pm to 8 am, the database would revert to mount mode (restored standby), ensuring minimal impact on production server performance.

To activate the standby database, the subsequent steps were carried out:

Steps:1. Initiate Backup: Commence a backup of the standby database. 2. Validation: Verify the backup on the standby database. 3. Activation: Activate the standby database.

The process of reinstating the standby database included the subsequent steps:

/usr/dbvisit/standbymp/oracle/dbvctl -d shplprod --mode BATCH -o reinstate --noprompt

Steps:1. Drop Existing Database 2. Restore Backup: Recover the backup obtained during the activation phase. 3. Open Database in Mount Mode 4. Apply Logs: Between 8 am and 8 pm, archive logs from the production server are automatically applied, ensuring synchronization with the production server.

Through the implementation of this methodical approach, we provided our client with the capability to seamlessly carry out testing activities and gather reports without jeopardizing the integrity of the production server. The automated scheduling facilitated by Dbvisit additionally enhanced the efficiency of the process, ensuring optimal resource utilization and maintaining a streamlined database operation.

Fenton Ethics and Test Tube Babies

In order to get the funding they need for their Ghost stuff, Jack and Maddie Fenton had to do some... rather illegal things when they left college.

One of them was testing alien DNA and seeing if it was compatible with human DNA.

However getting their hands on Superman's DNA or any of the main Leaguers would be far to hard for two up coming scientists and would run the risk of them being caught. Instead they set their sights on some of the younger aliens.

Such as Starfire, or rather Koriand'r.

They manage to get their hands on her DNA, and also her boyfriend (Nightwing) at the time and began to test it. They felt unsure with what they're doing but they needed the funding and in order to make themself feel better with what they're doing they decided if they were test her DNA with someone she was seeing it would be... better for their own conscience (it doesn't make what they're doing okay but they think so)

Eventually they succeeded in the testing! A baby can be made between a human and a alien.

HOWEVER because we know how the Fenton's get, they kind of go ahead of what they were only meant to do, which was just to TEST the compatibility of the DNA. Basically the paper's before the test phase.

With them getting tunnel vision on this project... They create said baby.

Then before they could show off that creating a new baby via test tubes actually works, they were told that the paperwork they were working on were going to be given to a new team, thank you for your work, here is the money for your ghost stuff, and have a good day.

The people who hired them then just leave.... Without knowing about the newly made baby.

Jack and Maddie name the baby Jasmine.

A few years later when little Jazz asks for a sibling... Well they bring out the old test tubes and papers.

And even though Starfire is no longer dating Nightwing, her new partner Red Hood would make a wonderful male donor for their future kid.

Maybe I'm projecting too much of my desperation to graduate and get out of school unto Ford but I do not think he was a good student nor did he enjoy Backupsmore as like, the concept of an academic institution, lol.

Can you imagine the crash out when a professor told him they don't take underclassmen in their lab, no matter how smart they are? Can you imagine him sitting through calc 1, 2, and 3 for the second time because his high school credits didn't transfer? He let his brother cheat through all of high school--- you know he was the GO TO for people who were too hungover or lazy to figure out their homework on a Sunday afternoon before it was due.

This is a guy who craves being in the field so bad he let his best friend get regularly traumatized just for The Science (Sorry, Fiddleford). We don't know for sure that he didn't publish anything while in Gravity Falls but it sure doesn't seem like it--- he's definitely the guy that has super high standards for other people's papers and articles but HATES writing his own. He loves the idea of writing but the academic paper process makes him hate himself (even more than usual). This is a guy who deep down just wanted to go sailing with his brother the whole time--- he is NOT sitting peacefully through a fundamental physics lab, he IS blowing something up, even when it shouldn't be possible. That man probably got into a near fistfight with the Dean trying to get his academic track sped up to graduate early. The admin office hated him. The physicists professors got into arguments about whether he was the best or worst student of all time. Nowadays, when you whisper Stanford Pines to the ancient physics department head, he shudders and holds his delicate lab machinery close. He's haunted by what was.
