#The Adventures of Ruby

Ruby came home today.

I still don't think I have the ability to accurately convey how much she meant to me. How much I needed her. How much she made me better in so many different ways.

I miss her so much.

I miss her so much it hurts. I miss her so much it feels like there's a Ruby shaped hole in my being that will never again be filled. I wake up every day at around 3:18am - the time of day I realized that it would be her last. I'm not doing that on purpose, it's just...happening. Just like how her death was - it just...happened. Suddenly, when we thought we had just a little bit more time.

I'm carrying her collar around - it's weird and I know it, but I'm just not ready to let go, to not have some part of her with me. It constricts and comforts. I shift in my sleep and the tag makes the same familiar sound that it did for over a decade when she shifted in her sleep.

I never want to forget that sound.

There's so much I never want to forget. The way she ways thumped her tail twice on command. The shrill whistle she had. The little "errs" she used to make when she talked to me. Her expression when she saw a giant ball. How she jumped eight feet high when she saw a snake skin that one time. How any time I tried to tell her what to do in ASL she would conveniently look anywhere but at me. The way I felt sleeping back to back with her in my first apartment. How safe and confident I felt on campus with her at my side. How she never took any of my shit, never indulged me, never gave me what I wanted, but always, ALWAYS, gave me what I needed. How every time illness or injury threatened to take her she would look at whatever obstacle or challenge was in her way and fight her way back from the brink, for me.

Thank you, Ruby. Thank you for being the best companion anyone could wish for. Rest easy, and run with your pack once more.
