The Application of Custom-Built Hot and Cold Mirrors
Tumblr media
Optical mirrors are commonly used for a wide range of specialized applications in various industries. Experts in the astronomy, metrology, engineering, aerospace, and life sciences utilize these reflective mirrors for various purposes.
These quality mirrors—both hot and cold mirrors—are used for a number of applications including illumination, beam redirection, imaging, and interferometry. Optical mirrors offer industry experts the ability to boost the precision of their practices, improve the quality of their experiments, gain more reliable results, and enjoy better performance.
Hot Mirrors
These specialized dielectric mirrors are used to reflect light back to its source; they separate visible light from heat. Produced with high quality Borosilicate-type Glass, these durable mirrors are coated with a thin dielectric film that reflects infrared radiation (IR).
Unlike what its name suggests, hot mirrors don’t reflect heat itself. By reflecting IR and UV and transmitting visible light, hot mirrors offer efficient thermal energy blocking.
Hot mirrors are often utilized in applications where waste heat can cause considerable damage to components and have an adverse reaction on other characteristics on the illumination source.
With a thickness of about 3.3mm, hot mirrors reflect about 90 percent of the infrared radiation and transmit about 80 percent of visible light. Offering a high operating temperature—of up to 400°C in some cases—typical applications of hot mirrors include:
· Various applications in the automotive industry
· Filtering heat in projectors
· Laser injectors
· IR laser diodes
· Sensor and measurement technology
Cold Mirrors
The other type of specialty mirror used in industrial applications is cold mirrors. These dielectric mirror works to separate infrared radiation from the non-IR elements. What sets cold mirrors apart from hot mirrors is that they transmit infrared heat energy and reflect light energy.
Offering exceptionally high reflectivity for visible light, cold mirrors offer optical characteristics that are useful in several different applications. Industry specialists use cold mirrors for:
· Sensory technology
· For diode laser applications
· Lighting optics for medical experts
· Lighting systems
· Dichroic beamspiltters
The defining feature of cold mirrors is that they transmit infrared radiation and reflect visible energy in high concentration. Made using premium-quality Borosilicate type glass and a dielectric multilayer mirror coating, cold mirrors transmit over 85 percent of the IR.
While hot mirrors operate at a preferred AOI of 0º, cold mirrors operate at 45º.

SMART LIVING: TOP 5 MODERN IDEAS FOR YOUR SMART BATHROOM
Tumblr media
With the advent of modern technology, living is becoming easier and more convenient–all thanks to brilliant inventions that reduce the need to exert effort to accomplish tasks.
For instance, with the introduction of smart bathroom appliances, it is possible for you to wake up in the morning and find the bathroom floor already warm, the shower water is already at your ideal temperature, and your favorite wake-up song is playing automatically in the background.
These are not merely musings from a science fiction movie, it is indeed possible with the following smart bathroom gadgets.
1. Smart Showers
With smart showers, you can set your preferred water temperature and it will automatically adjust it for you so that you can bathe in just the right warmness of water. Hence, it is time to say goodbye to the times where showering is either too freezingly cold or scaldingly hot.
On top of that, you can also play music straight from the shower. How cool is that? And to further amplify the showering experience, some smart showers incorporate chromotherapy lighting to add a zen-like dimension to your bathroom.
Smart showers work by updating your shower routine with the help of modern technology. With just a few clicks and taps, you can activate the built-in smart bluetooth speakers, which would allow you to blast some funky music, or catch up on the news or your favorite podcast.
Setting the perfect temperature and flow rate is also a piece of cake with the use of the remote or accompanying mobile application. Also, if you want a specific routine such as a three-minute power shower followed by 30 seconds of intense cold water it would pose no problem for the digital showers.
Say goodbye to minutes wasted on fiddling with the shower just to get it at the right temperature–thus freeing precious moments in your daily routine.
You can also take the mood to a whole new level with an LED shower head which uses temperature-guided colours. This means you won’t have to deal with cold and rude awakenings as the water heats up.
Simply watch the colours turn from blue to purple to red before leisurely stepping in to ensure that the water is already heated.
2. Smart Taps
Similar to digital showers, smart taps use the power of technology to give you a wide range of control over the customization of lighting, heating, flow rate and water temperature.
Smart taps can be installed anywhere with running water–be it in the shower, bath or sink taps. One of the benefits of converting your boring taps into a smart one is that it can help save precious time.
These smart gadgets could be crucial to free up time from your morning schedule as this allows you to remotely draw the perfect bath, so it is ready the moment you step through the door.
To top it off, these smart taps can be integrated with smart devices like Amazon’s Alexa and Google Home, which would allow you to use voice command technology to set up your perfect bathroom.
Imagine, you would not even have to lift a finger, just utter your command and it shall be done within seconds.
Another advantage is that smart taps can help lower costs and reduce your ecological footprint. After all, these devices keep track of your water consumption, which can help you evaluate your routine and save you money by reducing usage.
Some smart taps also come with infrared sensors which prevent water wastage by automatically turning off the tap when not in use.
3. Smart Mirrors
Perhaps one of the most annoying occurrences when taking a steamy bath is when you need to use the bathroom mirror but you have to wipe it down first because it is all fogged up.
Wiping the mist away certainly takes time and effort, not to mention, it will ultimately leave a trail of droplets that will dry and mark the mirror in the long run. However, with the invention of smart bathroom mirrors, such concerns are nothing but a thing of the past.
These gadgets come with insanely convenient features including LED backlighting and built-in demisters.
Some of the other mirror-related technology innovations in these smart bathroom mirrors include motion-detector software that automatically turns on the backlights of the mirror upon detection of movement.
It also has touch-screen technology, in-mirror speakers and far-field microphone for any voice commands. On top of that, it has waterproof remote controls and integrated plug sockets and charging points for shavers and electric toothbrushes. What more could you ask for?
If that is not enough for you, you can also turn your smart mirror into a second computer screen so that you can get today’s weather updates while you do your make up. You can also read the traffic updates while you shave and get up to speed with the latest news headlines while you brush your teeth.
Best of all, you can also watch your favourite online tutorial on makeup and follow the instructions in your LED backlit mirror. Or, for the ultimate indulgence, position the screen to face the bath or shower and watch your favourite TV show while having a soak.
4. Smart toilets
Of course, as far as bathroom technology goes, the invention of smart toilets will allow your toilet to do a lot more than just flushing the impurities you excreted. From heated seats perfect for cold winters to motion-sensitive lids that will automatically open and close to help you prevent the spread of germs, these smart gadgets have a lot to offer.
It also comes with a dedicated spraying system with customizable water pressure and temperature so that you can wash your private parts with just the click of a button. If this isn’t the epitome of convenience and hygiene, well, we don’t know what is!
5. Whirlpool and Hot Tubs
Craving for a full 5-star spa treatment at home? Install a 250-liter whirlpool bath at home and make your bathroom sizzle and steam to your satisfaction. It could either be a luxurious corner bath or a large five-corner suite with over 20 adjustable water and air jets.
One thing is for sure though, it will bathe you in soft bubbles and fragrant splashes of water that will inevitably massage and melt your stress away. These jets can be also be fully customised, including its location and pressure.
As a bonus, when you fit this with a smart tap, it can provide the ultimate bathroom luxury of convenience and relaxation. Just command Alexa to start running the bath and step in once done.

Nature's Natural Aloe Vera Gel To The Rescue For Skin Protection
Tumblr media
When Jack Frost comes visiting, your skin screams chapped and dry. That is because cold weather literally lifts moisture from the layers of skin. People who work outdoors in the winter or even play outdoors will eventually have chapped skin.
Just as you have to winter-proof your car, your skin also needs to be winter-proofed. The temperature drops during the winter and your body copes with increasing its temperature. Your skin is stripped of the needed moisture. Adding insult to injury, heavier clothing is worn, hot showers last longer and lower humidity aggravate the condition.
Women are recognized for using moisturizers yet 50% of the women over the age of 18 are plagued with dry skin during the winter. Millions of dollars are spent in trying to preserve what moisture is left and attempt to put some into the body. It won't work. The body needs to be moisturized from the inside. This is where the aloe plant will be of service from a humble beginning.
Externally, the aloe plant has been used for approximately 5,000 years through research of historical texts, including the Bible. The aloe vera's leaf contains a transparent gel which is gathered for topical application. Scrapes, bruises, and burns heal rapidly when applied with aloe gel.
Even dry, flaky and chapped skin becomes moister. How many aloe plants do you think it would take to cover the entire body? And doing this day in and day out can be a bit tedious. Welcome, Aloe gel supplements. Aloe Vera gel helps in combating the harsh winds of winter Yes...there are quite a few aloe vera supplements on the market but Aloe vera gel stands above them as the only supplement that is manufactured to strict pharmaceutical standards. Even tests for stability have been done. Aloe vera gel has been exposed to the most stringent testing known for health supplements. All the molecules required are found in Aloe vera gel and aloe vera's nutrients are delivered to the body in its 100% natural state.
You can buy countless bottles of moisturizers, spending as much money as you want, but nothing will beat the protection this plant offers. Polysaccharides abound in Aloe gel which stimulates the production of collagen which in turn leads to a more healthier and youthful looking skin. "Old Man Winter" has lost its war as it tried to rob your skin of the needed moisture. Just one tiny capsule a day and no longer that horrible tasting aloe stuff in a bottle for you to try to swallow Looking your best at Christmas is your ultimate goal so why not do it from the inside out. Not only your skin but your entire immune system will be built up, thereby even keeping the cold and flu viruses from taking hold, so get some aloe vera gel next time you are in your favorite health care shop!
Want to look better? Don't worry
If you don't mind looking pretty in front of the mirror and want to know someone who can assist in your purpose to look good, stop thinking much and buy an Aloe Vera Gel. The gel is nothing but the interior parts of the leaf which one can apply on their skin to increase the moisture content. When you are on a mission to look beautiful, your first stop should be at beauty stores in and around your area. You should always comb for Aloe Vera products, especially in the gel format. It will be tough, but once you find and starts applying it, you'll feel a sense of easy routine with it in your life.
Aloe Vera Gel - Where are you? I need to find you
They are known for their healing power. Research, both scientific and historical, suggests that Aloe plants are present on this earth since a long time and thus, contains healing properties within their anatomy. It has many resistive powers to slow down and wipe out diseases and ailments.
Very commonly, they are usable as lotions and sunblocks. It helps in soothing your skin, by cooling and bringing a glow, thereby, acting as a moisturizer. After administering the gel on your skin, you will feel nourishing. It will relieve your skin from any redness and itching. This cooling effect increases the usage of Aloe Vera not just as a moisturizer gel but also for other purposes.
Aloe Vera Gel is also evident on foods that we intake. According to the Food and Drug Administration, Its Juice can be consumed on several occasions as a cool drink and also as a flavoring agent in foods. Aloe can be helpful for the body, both internally and externally. With a proper stomach, you will always feel healthy and energetic. Aloes helps in regularising the bowel movements in our body and detoxifies the colon by eradicating harmful bacteria from the body.
Aloeride is the only product of Aloe Vera, which was manufactured purely in a pharmaceutical way. It can help you get treatment from ailments like Eczema and Asthma.
Aloe Vera Gel - Searching a natural approach
It is best for the farmers who grow it naturally, in their fields. Companies buy Aloe in bulk and try to process it within four hours for prevention of oxidation. Controlled growth and harvest of this plant enhance the nutritional and medicinal values of the plants. As such, claims of adulteration are reducing. Customers are ready to buy such products at ease from the manufacturers. For the buyers, if they are not getting or satisfied with the products, there is always an array of other sellers looking for fresh outreach.
At last but not least - a conclusion
When we cut a leaf, a "gel-like" substance is noticeable in the inner layers of the leaf. When this substance is manufactured and processed with a substantial amount of other ingredients, consumers use it as a gel.

The weirdest, wildest, and coolest images from CES 2020
Friendly robots are everywhere at CES. (Stan Horaczek /)
This year’s CES was massive. With roughly 4,400 companies showing off products and nearly 200,000 people there to see them, deciding what to spend time on can seem impossible. But, we’ve been on the ground since the beginning of the week and have gathered some of the most important trends, themes, and products into a handy gallery. Check it out, below.

The LG booth is always a spectacle with this massive, curved display at its entrance. LG’s press conference officially kicked off CES this year and the company is betting big on its ThinQ AI platform. During the presentation, the company outlined plans for the next decade in which it hopes to capitalize on the ambient technology trend, in which people seamlessly interact with digital assistants that learn and about their habits and preferences.

There weren’t a ton of new folding screens at CES, but Lenovo showed off its 13.3-inch folding ThinkPad X1 that works like a true folding laptop. It’s slated to ship mid-2020 for $2,500.
Despite the appearance, the keynote did not happen in space. (Stan Horaczek /)
Samsung didn’t throw its annual press conference this year. Instead, H.S. Kim, president and CEO of its consumer electronics division, gave a keynote address. Samsung has sweeping visions of connected cities in which people live in smart buildings that adapt to their behaviors. It also has some swanky appliances and a tiny AI robot.
Neon's "artificial humans" were real enough to get bored at CES. (Stan Horaczek /)
Neon made a big splash at CES promising “artificial humans.” The booth contained dozens of human-sized screens with eerily realist avatars creeping everyone out. The avatars aren’t meant to act like Google Assistant, but rather actual people with emotions and faults.
Sony made a car. It probably won't make any more, though. (Stan Horaczek /)
Sony’s CES presence has come a long way over the years. Its booth used to overflow with gadgets on tables, but now it’s mostly large-scale demos. The company even showed off a concept car. It never plans to actually put it into production, but rather it exemplifies its vision for the “everything is connected to everything else” future.
Ping pong is a popular choice for demoing computer vision tasks. These people were very good at it. (Stan Horaczek /)
This table tennis match in the Sony booth shows off some of the company’s augmented reality tech that’s in the works. Sensors track both the players and the ball. It lets the players analyze their performance for training purposes, but it also translates—in real time—the movements into the animated scene behind them.
Hyundai's flying car didn't fly just yet, but it's scheduled for the sky sooner than later. (Stan Horaczek /)
Hyundai and Uber are teaming up for a flying taxi service, a space that’s getting more crowded with every CES. Get the details in our story about the latest electric flying machines here.
Samsung is going hard on 8K TVs. (Stan Horaczek /)
TVs always take center stage at the show and this year’s big trend was, predictably, 8K. The ultra-high-res screens now take up considerable real estate in the major manufacturer’s lineups. Samsung’s offerings (shown here) go up to 98-inches. LG has more than eight 8K offerings as well. And Sony isn’t far behind.
Upscaling is king when there's no actual 8K stuff to watch. (Stan Horaczek /)
Because there’s still not really any 8K content to actually watch on those big, fancy TVs, many companies like Konka boasted their upscaling capabilities: It takes 4K content and tweaks it to try and take advantage of 8K’s extra resolution. Many processors use AI to analyze the picture on-screen and adapt the contrast and sharpening to make the picture pop.
Samsung housed its Sero TVs in this mirrored room, which makes for excellent Instagramming. (Stan Horaczek /)
TVs weren’t all about size at the show, however. Samsung showed off its 42-inch Sero TV, which connects to a smartphone and adapts to the orientation of your mobile device. So, if you want to play TikTok videos big on your TV, it will actually rotate into a portrait orientation so you can maximize screen space. It was a controversial product, but I think it’s a great idea.
The vertical TV room really was cool-looking. (Stan Horaczek /)
Here’s another photo of the vertical TVs because they looked pretty neat in the room.
Samsung's massive curved gaming monitor. (Stan Horaczek /)
Gaming monitors also took a leap at this year’s show. As powerful PC gaming rigs get more popular, gamers want features like frame rate matching and super-high refresh rates for smooth motion. Samsung was showing off its absurd 49-inch curved monitor. It did not make me better at Overwatch.
The next phase of VR will require a lot of time spent putting on suits and gloves. (Stan Horaczek /)
Virtual reality is still trying to make inroads with average customers, but this year, we saw more companies introducing haptic feedback devices to make VR more realistic. This glove from bHaptics adds resistance to your fingers, so when you pick up something in the game, it feels like it’s actually in your hand. There were also plenty of haptic suits that tap your torso when you get shot or hit in a video game.
These big hamster balls make moving in VR more realistic. (Stan Horaczek /)
This Virtuasphere is like a giant hamster ball that lets players run around in VR and move in every direction. It was impressive, but disorienting.
The actual Nreal augmented reality glasses go on your head, not on a firmly mounted pole. (Stan Horaczek /)
Nreal showed off its new light pair of augmented reality glasses, and the tech is extremely impressive. The displays fit easily into wearable frames that don’t look ridiculous. It seemed especially notable considering the recent troubles its competitor Magic Leap has been having.
Impossible's new pork replacement was the most delicious CES gadget by far. (Stan Horaczek /)
Impossible showed off its beef replacement last year at CES and this year it rolled out its delicious plant-based pork. You can read our full taste test here.
This is the only gadget at CES 2020 that cooked for me. (Stan Horaczek /)
Weber showed off its new SmokeFire grill, which automatically uses wood pellets to maintain its temperature. It has June Oven technology built-in, which allows it to give extra information like how long it expects your food to take before it’s done. It can also go up to 600 degrees for searing, something pellet grills typically struggle with. We’re looking forward to trying this out.
Samsung's prototype fridge is only for plants. (Stan Horaczek /)
Samsung showed off its prototype Bespoke Plant fridge, which grows a garden in your kitchen. You can see a closer look here.
Bridgestone built these tires for space. Space! (Stan Horaczek /)
Not everything on the show floor is meant for the market. This prototype tire from Bridgestone, for instance, was built for space rovers. It’s made of stainless steel that feels like steel wool. Inside, a flexible three-dimensional structure helps it keep its shape under load.
Drones typically hate it when you do that. (Stan Horaczek /)
Plenty of drones buzzed around the south hall of the convention center, but the PowerEgg X was one of the most impressive. It can fly in heavy rain and you can detach the camera module and attach it to your phone to shoot handheld if you want.
That screen is either fun or threatening depending how you read it. (Stan Horaczek /)
The serious robotics companies showed off some of their industrial applications. This demo pitted humans against a robot in a contest to see who could sort a small collection of pills more quickly. The robot usually won.
Samsung's Ballie robot follows you around. (Stan Horaczek /)
Samsung’s Ballie robot isn’t coming to the market, but it is an interesting demo. It uses computer vision to observe you, so if you have “water the plants” on your to-do list and it sees you watering plants, it’ll check that item off. It seemed to actually work, rather than representing just a moonshot product.
Stunt products like this toilet paper robot are big game at CES. (Stan Horaczek /)
Not all the robots were serious. This demo product from Charmin brings you toilet paper when you’re in need. Sadly, it’s not going to go on sale.
Razer's gaming-specific smartphone case has built-in cooling. (Stan Horaczek /)
Razer introduced its new gaming-specific phone case that uses a patented metal layer in order to pull heat away from the device to keep it cool. The company says it saw considerable temperature reductions, and improved CPU and battery performance.
Razer has added familiar controls to smartphone gaming. (Stan Horaczek /)
Razer’s new smartphone gamepads now work with any phone, so if you’re playing high-end games on a service like Microsoft’s X-Cloud or Google Stadia, you can have console-style controls. It felt great to play on and, with streaming services on the serious rise in 2020, expect to see more of these.
This weird translucent bowling pin represents you in the shower. (Stan Horaczek /)
Toto’s smart shower doesn’t spray you with water. Instead, it bathes you in a calm stream that’s supposed to help you stay warmer all over rather than having one hot side and one cold side of your body.
Skin treatment and cosmetics are big—and often scary-looking—game at CES this year. (Stan Horaczek /)
The cosmetics tech space still feels a bit like the Wild West. These light therapy masks from Neurocare look unnerving.
Stress relief was a big theme at CES 2020. It did not work for me. (Stan Horaczek /)
While there wasn’t as much facial recognition tech as I would have expected, there was no shortage of gadgets determined to learn about you from sensors and cameras. Many of them, like this resting pod, are designed to monitor vitals and manage stress.
This is a good place to rest your phone with a Pop Socket on it, and a bad place to rest your coffee (trust me). (Stan Horaczek /)
Pop Sockets released its own wireless charger that works without taking the little nub off the back of your phone. It’s simple, but I want one.
Self-driving car sensors are in a heated battle at the moment. (Stan Horaczek /)
As 5G rises, one of the most commonly touted uses is self-driving cars. Plenty of large companies like Intel are making sensors and radios to help vehicles monitor driving conditions and communicate with other cars and connected infrastructure.
This automated excavator is the most adorable construction equipment we've ever seen. (Stan Horaczek /)
These self-driving excavators from Doosan also rely on 5G. There’s also a front-end loader as part of its Concept X program.
This gadget smells like I want to buy a time share. (Stan Horaczek /)
With all of the cool tech, there was an undercurrent of data collection., With all of the sensors around, it enables interesting AI possibilities, but they sometimes also work with marketing. Who doesn’t want “scent marketing”?
I want this wireless speaker shower head and you can't convince me otherwise. (Stan Horaczek /)
Have you ever wished you could talk to Alexa while in the shower? This smart speaker comes from Kohler and could be the answer to your connected-bathroom dreams.
Panasonic's new VR goggles have a decidedly steampunk vibe. (Stan Horaczek /)
Panasonic’s steampunk style VR glasses promise high-res displays that fight lag and the “screen door effect."

2020 Toyota Supra First Drive: Automotive Husbandry
There was a time when Mama and Papa Toyota gave birth to strong, athletic sports cars, starting with the suave 2000GT, sent to boarding school in Coventry and raced by Carroll Shelby. Through the years the family grew to include lithe Celicas, stalwart Supras, even a scrappy rear-drive Corolla GT-S or two. Then something happened, and Mama Toyota found herself unable to conceive sports cars. An impatient Papa Toyota summoned his Fuji concubine, Subaru-san, who gave birth to identical twins—one of which he graciously allowed her to keep. Mama Toyota was furious and forbade Papa Toyota from ever showering his son, 86, with any affection or horsepower. To woo back his betrothed, who desperately wished to birth another great sports car, Papa Toyota hatched a plan to artificially inseminate an auspicious European egg for Mama Toyota to gestate. She’s just given birth, and now the world must determine how this half-breed stacks up against its all-Toyota siblings.
We created this origin-story myth for the joint development of the A90-generation Supra out of frustration when it proved impossible to pin down exactly what roles Toyota and BMW played in the initial design of this new car. The inline-six turbo is obviously all BMW’s—it served as the inspiration for this hook-up in the first place. (“Thy Supras Shall Have I-6 Engines” was chiseled as the forgotten 11th commandment.) Most invisible parts are shared and apparently developed by BMW, if the roundel stickers, engravings, and casting marks are to be believed. The bodywork and the tuning of every tunable element on the Supra was handled by Toyota. We’re told the joint-venture team aimed squarely at Porsche’s 718 range, with BMW targeting the Boxster; Toyota the Cayman.
As for the B58B30M1 engine, although its output roughly equates to that of the European-market BMW Z4 sibling, it does not in fact employ a particle filter in U.S. applications. This begs the question, why not uncork the extra horsepower BMW gets from its filterless U.S. application (tagged B58B30M0)? Chief engineer Tetsuya Tada answers by claiming that balancing the car’s engine and chassis at the Nürburgring led to the 335 hp/365 lb-ft rating. But we find it hard to believe that in this fanboy, numbers-obsessed market segment his team chose to remove 47 horsepower instead of fortifying the chassis to cope with 382 hp. Let’s hope that instead the strategy is to start out conservative and bring a steady stream of higher-output special editions in the years to come.
But let’s return to the essential question at hand: Is this bicontinental cross-breed a “real” Supra?
The striking design may not appeal to everyone, but at least it doesn’t look at all like any BMW and several design cues evince Toyota sports-car DNA: the hatch bustle shape and elements of the headlamp design hark to the previous (A80) Supra, and the side-window shape is pure 2000GT. The proportions are certainly fresh. It’s shorter in length and wider than any of its predecessors, with the cabin set well back behind the requisite long hood. It’s also impressive that the team managed to generate the aero forces required to guarantee stability at the car’s 155-mph-limited top speed with underbody features and the duckbill shape of the hatch surface, leaving the bodywork refreshingly devoid of external wings, spoilers, skirts, and splitters.
Inside, the 2020 Supra’s overall dash, door panel, and seat designs are unlike the Z4’s, but there’s no mistaking all the BMW switchgear—especially the entire iDrive system, complete with all BMW fonts (changing them would have reduced Tada’s budget for making the car lighter and quicker). Whatever you think of the appearance, the functionality of this interior is hard to fault. All controls are intuitive and within easy reach (Consumer Reports just rated iDrive second to Tesla among automotive user interfaces). The 14-way power seats are quite comfortable and supportive, with side wings that can adjust to hug you tight on a track, then relax for the drive home. And the whole driver’s side of the center console area is padded for taller drivers to brace their right knee against. Nice.
I drew the assignment to test out the new Supra in part because I’m old enough (just) to have been around for the 1993 A80 Supra’s launch. and I drove the 2000GT for MotorTrend Classic in 2005. Let me state right here that the 2020 Supra comes off as less exotic than either of those two. That’s OK. Evolving the A80 Supra Turbo, accounting for inflation, would have produced a low-volume 500-ish-hp car priced in the $75,000–$85,000 range, and the 2000GT’s successor was arguably the Lexus LFA.
That’s not to say that the new Supra doesn’t feel special. All new two-seat coupes are rare and wonderful these days, and this one certainly outperforms all its predecessors. Our database confirms that if the factory-estimated 0–60 time of 4.1 seconds holds up, this new Supra will outperform all previous production Toyotas (a supercharged 2008 Tundra TRD and a 1997 Supra Turbo rank as the quickest we’ve tested at 4.4 and 5.1 seconds to 60 mph, respectively).
There’s a launch-control feature to aid in achieving that number, and the standard ZF 8HP eight-speed automatic fires off lightning-quick shifts along the way. Engage Sport mode, and the faultless shift programming preselects the right gear for every corner. This mode also opens an exhaust flap, alters the audio-system engine-note enhancer, and orders up a delightful snap-crackle-pop on overrun courtesy of gloriously wasteful fuel injection during the exhaust stroke (fun fact: This is said to be the only Toyota designed with no fuel-economy target).
Supras are not drag-strip cars. They also need to be able to handle the corners, and toward that end the joint team built a strong foundation—the Supra’s torsional rigidity reportedly exceeds that of the Lexus LFA (not to mention the open Z4). The front strut suspension emulates the ‘super strut’ design Toyota launched on its AE92 Corolla in the late-1980s, featuring two separate ball-jointed lower links for reduced camber change and improved steering feel. To assist with chassis tuning, Mr. Tada once again engaged the services of Dutch Nürburgring veteran racer Herwig Daenens, who assisted with the Toyota 86 (née Scion FR-S).
Their goal was to tune for neutral handling with no surprises. “With a snappy car, the customer will experience it once and never drive it hard again,” Daenens explains as he laps Summit Point Motorsports Park outside Washington, D.C. His first hot lap strings together all the tight corners with laser precision and minimal steering heroics. He then gives me a Formula Drift lap or two, with no giant hand-brakes or diff-locks, rolling on the stock Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires inflated to placard specs (38 psi all around, cold). Speaking of differential locks, the Supra’s is infinitely variable and tuned to reduce corner-entry understeer and to maximize corner-exit traction.
When it’s my turn to duck my helmet under the low window opening and buckle in, I am struck by the intimacy of the car and cockpit. It feels as though I’m positioned near the centers of gravity and rotation, making it feel like this little world indeed revolves around me. One nit to pick—the large driver’s side-view mirror obscures the view of an upcoming apex worse than some, and the tallest drivers may be chagrinned to find the seatback tilting forward toward the rear of the seat track’s travel.
We’re instructed not to switch stability control completely off, to trail-brake into the turns, and to roll judiciously onto the throttle. Indeed, all those driving-school techniques provoke textbook responses in the Supra sans drama or surprises. The steering is extremely precise and nicely weighted, though it lacks the intimate communication of the Cayman Toyota is gunning for. Stability intervention is pleasantly surreptitious. And the super-strong Brembo brakes survive lap after lap after lap without fade, even as we all learn to press deeper into each of the closely spaced corners. Then during a later afternoon session, when we’ve probably used up 280 of the tires’ 300 tread-life rating, I even manage to string together a couple of very nice, controllable corner-to-corner drifts. I emerge, sweaty but smiling.
Once the red mist subsides and we take to the country lanes surrounding Summit Point, the car’s Sunday-drive demeanor proves equally delightful. The 12-speaker 500-watt JBL system cranks out the jams, the ride quality in Sport mode is sufficiently compliant to encourage leaving the car in this ‘fun-exhaust’ mode, and when zipping through a series of S-bends with your phone on the Qi wireless charger, a cover and sufficient fencing keep it from flying into the passenger footwell.
So is this miracle of automotive husbandry worthy of the Supra name? Heck, yeah. It reinvents the concept in a guise that make sense for today’s world, and it’s offered at a price ($50,920 to start, $57,375 fully loaded) that’s a relative bargain when measured against both its predecessor and its Porsche competitor ($58,150, $70,640 similarly equipped to the Launch Edition model). If it’s not precisely what you had in mind, the aftermarket is gearing up to help you fix that.

How In-Row Cooling Increases Data Center Efficiency
Cooling efficiency is a top priority for today’s data center operators. Increased data center densities enable operators to deliver more processing power in the same amount of space to meet the demands of cloud and hyper-scale environments. As more power is consumed per rack, however, heat becomes a big problem, and traditional computer room air conditioning (CRAC) units are unable to keep up.
Most modern data centers have adopted some sort of aisle-containment solution to minimize the mixing of hot and cold air. With cold-aisle containment, racks are positioned in rows with their fronts facing the aisle, which is enclosed to contain the cold intake air. Hot air from the rear of the equipment is exhausted into the room, which becomes a large hot-air plenum.
A hot-aisle containment system mirrors this approach — the rears of the racks face the aisle, which contains the hot air and exhausts it into a drop ceiling void, return system or computer room air handler (CRAH). Hot-aisle containment is more efficient than cold-aisle containment because it leverages the fact that hot air rises. It also creates a more comfortable environment for data center staff and non-racked equipment.
Either way, aisle containment makes it possible to set cooling systems to a higher temperature while still maintaining a safe operating temperature for the equipment. It also minimizes the risk of hot spots, and reduces the need for humidification and dehumidification. All of this reduces costs by reducing power consumption.
However, aisle-containment with a CRAC unit is not as efficient as in-row cooling. As the name implies, in-row cooling places a cooling unit directly in the row of racks. The unit may be suspended from the ceiling, placed on top of a cabinet or mounted on the floor. Because the cooling unit is closer to the equipment, the cold air doesn’t have to travel as far and heat can be dissipated faster. In-row cooling can be used to supplement room cooling, or installed in a closed-loop arrangement with a cold-aisle containment enclosure.
In-row cooling units may use refrigerant or chilled water, and incorporate fans to distribute the cold air. State-of-the-art units have built-in intelligence, varying cooling capacity and fan speeds according to the load.
There are several obvious use cases for in-row cooling. It may be used for a lab environment within a data center, or to provide more efficient cooling for a customer in a co-location facility. In-row cooling is also ideal for extremely dense environments, particularly those that use power-hungry GPU clusters for machine learning and other artificial intelligence applications.
Rahi’s new line of in-row cooling units are designed to meet customer demand for higher capacity to address today’s heat loads. These 45U-high, 1200mm-deep and 600mm- or 900mm-wide units fit comfortably in any data center environment yet can deliver more than 100kW of cooling capacity. They are available in condensate water, chilled water and DX air- and water-cooled configurations to meet a wide range of needs. They feature a wall of variable-speed, hot-swappable fans and dual power supplies. They are easy to install and service and have an intuitive, touch-screen interface.
Our in-row cooling technology is a key component of our new FlexIT Pod solution, which we’ll talk about in next week’s post.

Remodeling 101: Stainless Steel Countertops
Look inside any restaurant kitchen and you’ll see stainless steel worktops everywhere. Impervious to heat and virtually indestructible, stainless steel is a countertop material designed for serious cooks. (And, in recent years, stainless has infiltrated just about every surface in the home kitchen.) Does this translate into the ideal work surface for you? Read our primer to fully understand stainless.
Above: When transforming a Santa Monica penthouse on a budget, LA architect Oonagh Ryan chose stainless steel counters: “It’s a really terrific countertop from a cost, durability, and maintenance perspective. And it only looks better with age and use,” she says. See Kitchen of the Week: A Budget Kitchen Rehab in a Santa Monica Rental Loft.
What is stainless steel?
Stainless steel is a steel that contains a minimum of 10.5 percent chromium, which makes it resistant to rust and corrosion. It comes in various grades that depend on the additional metal alloys that are mixed in. Type 304, or austenitic steel, is known as food-grade stainless because food and hot cooking tools can be safely placed directly on its surface. The most commonly used stainless for countertops, Type 304 contains a high level of chromium and nickel, which increases its stain and heat resistance.
Another important detail to know: Stainless steel is manufactured in a variety of gauges (14 to 20 are the typical gauges and represent the thickness of the sheet—14 gauge is 1.4 millimeters thick—and subsequently its strength). The lower the gauge, the thicker the steel; the thicker the steel, the stronger your counter will be for handling weighty equipment and heavy use without denting: 16- and 18-gauge steel are the most commonly used thicknesses for residential applications, while 14 gauge is found in many commercial settings.
Should stainless steel be on your countertop shortlist?
Stainless steel has all the qualities needed for an indestructible kitchen worktop. Heat-resistant? Check. Non-staining? Check. Hygienic and easy to clean? Check. It’s a nonporous material that unlike butcher block, concrete, and many natural stones, will not absorb even the toughest of cooking ingredients—which means that stainless doesn’t stain or harbor bacteria. Hot pots and pans can be placed directly on its surface without worry. That said, stainless steel, like many materials, shows scratches, especially if sharp knives and other tools are used directly on it. (And stainless itself will damage knives, so it’s wise to cut on a cutting board.) Most stainless used for countertop applications is brushed, which serves to camouflage small scratches, but, even so, it will patina over time.
Concerned about the cool industrial feel of stainless? It can be paired with other warm countertop materials to soften the look. When I lived in London 10 years ago, my kitchen had hardworking stainless countertops around the stove mixed with butcher block and stone countertops in the prep areas.

What are the installation guidelines?
Stainless steel countertops are typically custom fabricated. Sheets of stainless are cut to size specifications and placed on top of a wooden substructure. The sheet is typically wrapped over the edge to achieve the look of a standard countertop or can be cut flush with the wood base. The stainless steel can also be folded and run up the wall to create a backsplash.
Above: An elegant installation solution: Thin countertops in a kitchen by architect Jerome Buttrick have a modern look—and are cheaper than wrapped-edge counters.
What kind of edge profiles are available?
Because stainless countertops are typically custom fabricated, the sheet can be wrapped over the edge in a variety of thicknesses. To get the look of standard countertop thickness, a 1.5-inch side drop is specified, but many variations, from thick to thin, are possible.
Different edge shapes, or profiles, are also available. The most common is an eased square edge; other options include a beveled edge, bullnosed (rounded) edge, or no wrapped edge at all.

A signature of the architects is to leave the striped plywood exposed and have the stainless counter rest on top with no edge wrap. See Kitchen of the Week: A Scandi Design in Brooklyn. What are the finish options?
Stainless steel counters are available in several finishes: brushed, satin polish, mirror polish, and antique matte to name a few. Brushed finish is the most popular because it looks smooth and soft, and doesn’t show as many fingerprints or scratches as the polished options.

How do you clean and maintain stainless counters?
Cleaning stainless steel is easy: the nonporous nature of the material means that foods and liquids sit on top of it and are best removed with mild soap and a soft cloth. Fingerprints, too, accumulate on the surface until cleaned. You can use special stainless steel cleaners and polishes to minimize fingerprints, but over time there’s no avoiding some signs of use and abuse. Mirrored polish stainless typically requires periodic polishing to maintain its high luster. Specialty Stainless offers a useful Re-polishing Stainless Steel Primer.
Above: In a kitchen by Murphy Burnham & Buttrick, the architects used a very fine brush-finished stainless. While pleasing to the eye, the finish requires regular maintenance—the owners apply an aerosol stainless steel cleaner with a cotton cloth—to keep it fingerprint-free and polished. How much do stainless steel countertops cost?
Not a budget choice, stainless steel countertops run between $75 and $150 per square foot installed. Prices vary depending on site-specific needs, the level of customization, your location, and the gauge of the stainless sheeting used. This is comparable to quality natural stone counters and more expensive than butcher block.
One way to cut costs dramatically is to use prefabricated restaurant stainless steel work tables and counters available through restaurant supply companies, such as the Web Restaurant Store. There are fewer options in terms of sizing, but it can be an appealing way to integrate a stainless work surface into an existing kitchen or replace counters with a non-built-in alternative.
