“The One-man Beatles,” Emitt Rhodes Dies at 70

Emitt Rhodes, the revered cult musician who returned to music in 2016 after a four decade-absence, has died, his label, Omnivore Recordings, said.

Rhodes, 70, died July 19; no cause was given.

In a brief eulogy, public relations agency Conqueroo recalled the privilege of working with Rhodes on Rainbow Ends, his swan song.

“Thank you for the music,” the firm wrote on its Facebook page. “Rest in peace, old friend.”

After short stints in the Palace Guard and the Merry-Go-Round, Rhodes released three solo albums between 1970 and ’73, earning himself the nickname “one-man Beatles” for playing all the instruments and producing his own music in his home studio.

Considered brilliant and a genius by critics, fans and fellow musicians, Rhodes remained a cult figure and virtually disappeared until his 2016 comeback.

Susanna Hoffs and Big Star were among the artists who paid tribute on social media.

“So many amazing songs, very sad to say goodbye to this terrific talent,” Slumberland Records said.
