People really love to have their Ciphers/Agents interact because it delves into the interesting workplace drama of Imperial Intelligence, but in Eight's vein of things, he's deliberately kept apart from the others, and I think that reinforces his idea that there's some kind of invisible wall separating him from other people and forming bonds with them.

It's also much more interesting to me if none of the Ciphers are allowed to meet out of fear of compromising each other's ability, whether that's through learning what this administration has done to them or finding common ground in someone exactly like you. That's too much power to give to such dangerous individuals who should never be allowed to organize lest they overthrow their masters, and Intelligence is keenly aware of this.

Solidarity is a powerful thing. Relationships even moreso, for people you've turned into weapons.

Eight, himself, is aware of this as well, when the first Watcher he bonded with was abruptly assigned to a different agent and moved divisions. Since then, he's always had a no-contact relationship with his handlers, or is simply assigned multiple Watchers that are switched out on rotation. Something about attachment. About his ability being hindered by such things. Watcher 2 sometimes works with him, hence his familiarity with her (and misguided cuddliness), but he'll never be her Cipher-- that's Nine. Watcher 2... cares for him in her own way, but she keeps him at arms length, more than she can allow for another agent she's not authorized to be close with. It's very much unrequited. Eight's affection for her is unconditional, but he knows well enough that what they have is not something that can defy the orders that hang over their heads.

And... that contributes to him feeling, if not being, a literal ghost in the agency. You're unattached. You're lost. What little purpose you have is boiled down to impersonal directives on a flimsiplast set to be burned. You're the wet worker, the one everyone would rather forget. All you have to cling to is the idea of a person on the other side who might be like you- and there's a solid fence separating you from ever knowing them. Sour grapes theorem and all but over time, he sees the way the others light up at the mention of certain other Ciphers. At their fame, their renown, their connection to Intelligence. And he thinks, even as he pores over their dossiers, trying to know someone through faded pictures and psych evals alone, before it's wiped, resigned to archives and left to collect dust like him-- maybe we're not so alike after all.

Hello hello which characters from your Fault au would be which fear's avatar? (The Magnus Archives, you can google the fears and their descriptions if you don't know them)

ok I haven’t listened to the Magnus archives (since I’m not a horror fan) but I have entity assignments for the guys of I can find it in discord. Funnily enough Fault and Magnus Archive language overlaps, since Fault also invokes a language of ‘avatar’ for its magic system, even if the characters are far too wrapped up in their own problems to explore the world building lore. Minor spoilers I guess.

Tubbo is the corruption obviously since come on bee hivemind that has minor siren properties that force you to want to belong to the hive. From what I know that fits the corruption very well. Honesty Rosalind’s subsumption into the hive probably is a scene straight out of the Magnus archives. Also the way Tubbo twists their own revulsion into justifying their morals/prejudices. Not that uh being revolted by massacres isn’t normal but their atavistic gut reactions feed more of their philosophy than they’d admit. I’ve had The Blade as a toss up between the slaughter and the hunt. Like he is literally an avatar for the god of Slaughter and Supremacy buuut I think the hunt wins out because it’s a chase. He’s compelled to finish a fight, and will find anyone who’s begun a battle no matter what as if magnetized to them. And it’s not entirely unpredictable violence since it’s always retaliation. Plus I think The Blood God has a preference for animal vessels, or at least most of their vessels haven’t been humans since they’ve been active since the first cell killed another cell. Tommy is the lonely. I mean he is a vessel for slaughter just like The Blade but loneliness defines him. He’s spent his time in the Foundation as a training exercise, desperately latching on to any human connection only for handlers assigned to him to suddenly move on, or hurt/despise him. Extreme abandonment issues, and spirals when he’s left alone in the dark with his gloves. A curled up figure in the center of a massacre, reaching out desperately and dooming all he touches. Tommy is the lonely to a T. Wilbur could be the darkness? Since I mean hello vessel for the void and things that crawl in and are shadows. However I think the stranger is more interesting for him. He doesn’t fit in unfamiliar human places, spent his entire life trying to infiltrate into society to survive. Yet he’s constantly hyper aware of his distinction from humanity. He’s never had a home, always on the run, and so he’s never had a place that’s familiar. He’s always the new stranger in town. Wilbur is the uncanny figure, the not quite human, the thing that doesn’t belong. Plus the theme of being replaced for the eventual Namestealer arc. Philza is the desolation. He’s not a vessel for a god/conceptual but rather is one so powerful he made himself real, so idk if that translates in MA to being the entity rather than an avatar but idk. Regardless he’s the god of Fire and Fury so desolation it is. Philza inflicts a lot of cruel destruction, and is very precise in the torture he causes even at a mass scale. But he’s also experienced a LOT of loss over the millennia, each time losing some of his commitment to being a person. His entire theme is building attachments and then losing them.

little bonus for the villain ocs: Webb is. The web. No he’s the spiral, given how he amnesticized and gaslit Philza into a complete mental spiral, unable to trust his own fraying memories or remember his loved ones. And come on, Tommy’s doorway is a MASSIVE motif in that arc. Dr. Blake is actually the web, given how she manipulates anomalies in order to survive. Also a large theme with her is how she manufactures choices that both serve her in order to distract victims from making a decision outside her control. Also a key player in Tommy believing he has no agency.

Yeah. to put it bluntly: I just am not interested in the idea of this ask blog anymore. I had fun while it lasted, but, I don't think it'll continue. I'll keep the blog up for archival reasons, and if anyone else in the fanbase wishes to pick up where I'm leaving this off, they can feel free to do so.

The reason i'm officially ending it here is because 1, I don't wanna pull a valve and leave y'all waiting for closure any longer 2, I just have better ideas for the IEYTD franchise. Better Au ideas etc. etc. 3, I was way too ambitious with the scope of this AU. Took on more than I could chew, yknow?

I will definitely continue creating IEYTD content every now and then on my main blog (@bugtoast) in case any of y'all are worried about that, but as for this blog, I think i'm done.

I'm really sorry to anyone who was enthusiastic about this blog (especially my besties in this fandom YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE /positive), but it just isn't continuing.

I'm forever grateful to anyone who sent asks or drew fanart or even just reblogged with little messages in the tags! you all gave me all the encouragement and more that I could've ever needed. To you, thank you.

Anyways, as promised when i made this blog, here's what the plotline of this comic WOULD'VE been if it had been finished. Spoilers will be present under the "Read more".

Basically, Phoenix does the third game missions (with juniper now being stuck with Handler), but when they awake on the beach, they're found by a zoraxis member.

The Zoraxis member obviously brings Phoenix to Zor, and Phoenix learns of Zor's next master plan: To find a way to control time, so that they can go back in time and destroy the agency before it even started.

It's here that we learn that Zor used to be Reggie(Handler)'s Handler before something happened that forced Reggie to retire to his current position, and that Handler and Zor used to have a similar relationship to that of Phoenix and Handler's current one.

There was more, but I honestly forgot what happens next. All i remember from here on out is that Zor and the Main crew end up teaming up, destroying the Agency (which was the real villain the whole time) and all ends up good.

I know it isnt the best plotline, but its the one I came up with and had in mind for this ask blog while writing it.

SHIELD was, for a lack of better phrasing, unpleased at Natasha's tendency to take missions off script.

In Nat's eyes, missions rarely (if ever) went according to plan. Her skill at improvising and her modest disregard for protocol were the only things keeping her operations afloat. Her superiors disagreed.

Her new status update came with little surprise: GROUNDED. She was to report for six months of desk duty deep in the archives of SHIELD HQ. Natasha had heard rumors of this place: for each of the agency's missions there was a mountain of paperwork and cataloguing that needed to happen behind the scenes. Nat was more terrified of this place than any warzone.

When she first entered the Archives, she was taken aback by the staff that manned the hundreds of desks and work stations... many of them operated in pairs or trios of identical employees.

"LMDs," her handler informed her. "The only way we're able to handle the workload in a timely fashion. SHIELD gave us access to that tech in the '90s and we never looked back."

Apparently it was yet another of SHIELD's seedy secrets: this degree of hyper-sophisticated life model decoy technology was deemed unreliable for field work, but here in the bowels of HQ, menial labor seemed the perfect fit for the morally-questionable science.

"We'll get you outfitted for a double right away," the handler told Natasha. "Follow me."

Sure enough, for the months that followed, Natasha would arrive to the Archive each morning before being LMD'ed before starting the day's work. By the evening, the LMD would be deactivated. Rinse and repeat. Natasha loathed it.

She was savvy-enough to admit that maybe the tech wasn't harmful, though. Was it possible that she'd be sentenced to a full year of desk work, rather than just six months, if she couldn't work in stereo? She dared not protest. Not to mention that working alongside "herself" had some perks. Nat was fun, and funny, and the two could operate in bureaucratic synchronicity that made the time fly.

Not to mention... the other feelings, too. That it made her feel extra confident to watch herself from new angles. Or that when the LMD brushed an eyelash off Natasha's cheek, that her heart began to flutter.

Nat realized before her six months were up that this mission, like all others for her, would not be one where she adhered to all the rules.

"Not exactly in the business of giving a shit, Mother." Lilith breathes deeply. She opens her eyes slowly, looking towards the ground.

She sees the shoes first, garish pink converse. Who the fuck wears canvas shoes to their first day of work at a goddamn assassin agency?

Lilith looks up to see a woman, probably a little younger than herself, with short curly hair and an easygoing smile. The woman reaches out a hand to shake, slowly, because obviously she’s read Lilith’s file too.

“I’m Camila, and it seems we work well together!” she says with a grin.

“If we are to continue working well together, could you do one thing for me, Camila?”

Camila’s head cocks to the side, but turns the ignored outstretched hand into a gesture for Lilith to continue.

“Don’t try to be my friend. We are coworkers. I am putting my life in your hands, I don’t care what you watched on tv last night or if you have a cat or that your brother just got married or whatever. I don't care.” Lilith says blandly.

Camila’s smile twitches for just a moment before it’s back, blinding as it was moments ago. “Understood, Agent.”

Great! Phoenix gets the pleasure of infiltrating a fishing boat. They can already smell the fish

You know I frequently think about what Magnus Archive entities different characters from things would be warlocks for but I don’t think I’ve ever really talked about any of my thoughts on it before. Maybe I should start doing that, just for fun. Someone might find it interesting. This one is for IEYTD because I don’t expect this hyperfixation to die very soon. Spoilers for all the games. Oh and if you want to use this as inspiration for some weird crossovers you can, but please tell me if you do, because I wanna see it.

Agent Phoenix: The End This one is especially fitting if you think of the time loops as being in universe, stuck dying again and again, but it works even without that. Constantly close to death, feeling the fear of death, but never actually dying. Causing others fear because their friends have to deal with grief and their enemies have to be terrified every time they survive something they shouldn’t have. You could make an argument for The Beholding, you can for most protagonists, but it doesn’t make as much sense to me.

Handler: The Beholding He watches his agents do such dangerous things and can’t do much more than watch. He can help in someways but not too many. I imagine it would also be uncomfortable for Zoraxis agents to know they’re being watched by someone who they can’t see, someone other than the agent in front of them. Alternatively, he could be The Web. (“A mere puppeteer, they only enslave you,”) I just don’t think that works as well since he also has to answer to The Agency and he doesn’t have any malicious intent with his manipulations.

Dr. Zor: The Web Constantly orchestrating schemes from the shadows, has no loyalty to anyone and will kill their highest ranks without remorse if they interfere with their plans, too clever to ever be caught, and knows what Phoenix will do well enough to leave messages for them. Could also make arguments for The Stranger, The Beholding, The End, and The Extinction, but I think all of those connect back to their plotting and masterminding.

Daniel Sans: The Corruption Very minor character but I felt like adding him here. He made a super virus. That’s it that’s all I’ve got.

Zoraxis AI: The Buried Specifically the one in the escape pod. Does this even count as a character? No idea, but you can’t tell me that escape pod doesn’t sound like it would be the subject of someone’s statement if they got out of it alive.

Hivemind: The Corruption He’s literally just bees. Like, a bunch of bees. His name is Hivemind. What else can I even say?

Solaris: Uh The Vast Maybe? Because space? I’ll be honest I’m not really sure about this one, if anyone has any ideas I’d love to hear them.

The Fabricator: The Desolation She seems to enjoy the pain she causes with her inventions, whereas some of the scientists in game seem more like they’re just hurting people for the sake of their science. I’d also definitely accept The End for her since death traps are kind of her main thing.

John Juniper: The Stranger He’s got the masks, the acting and lying, he impersonates people, it seems like a perfect fit honestly. I guess he could maybe work for The Spiral but that’s mostly because it’s so similar to The Stranger.

Gibson: The Beholding Ok this one might sound a bit weird but hear me out. Phoenix pretends to be Gibson for a reason, his radio allows him to eavesdrop and he probably does eavesdrop just so he won’t miss Juniper’s commands. Gibson is just a butler, but he hears all about these worldwide conspiracies and gets caught in the crossfire, and there really isn’t much he can do about it. Except threatening to share the things that he’s heard, which is very affective, because he’s heard a lot of important secrets.

Shawn in HR: The Beholding Honestly he really does give me archive assistant or object storage vibes. Just doing his job hearing about and sorting the horrors. The big difference is that the horrors in this situation are corporate espionage and conspiracies.

Dr. Prism: The Extinction Ok once again, this may seem a bit weird, but hear me out. Her main goal in game is to replace the agents with robots and there is an element of humanity being replaced to The Extinction, not just everyone dying. Then there’s Zor’s betrayal destroying all her robots at once. Then she helps Phoenix save all the agents in the world from death. Even if it’s never an extinction of humanity she certainly has experience with extinctions. An alternate might be The Hunt because of her obsession with revenge and killing Phoenix or Zor, and the Agency trying to track her down.

Robutler: The Stranger or The Spiral He just seems so friendly and happy to talk to you while he attempts to kill you.

Ollie: The Lonely I swear this isn’t just because Ollie’s voice reminds me of Alexander J Newall’s. The poor guy just got abandoned in the ocean for like at least a month. His coworkers and bosses seem to be pretty mean to him too.

Director Morales: The Web He really is just running The Agency behind the scenes. We really don’t hear much about him orchestrating anything but maybe that’s just because he’s really good at it. Out of all these characters, he would probably be the creepiest to me if he was actually a warlock for an entity.

The Phantom: The Web We really don’t know much about them but they manage to leave coins for Phoenix to find everywhere they go knowing that they’ll find them. Very Web like behavior. Maybe The Hunt. The coin thing is kinda like a scavenger hunt and they do have to track down Phoenix to leave those clues.

Why am I doing this? Two reasons, really: A) Because this is my favourite game franchise, and B) Since I saw that the handle "i-expect-you-to-die" wasn't taken, I figured it would be a good handle to have for a more 'professional' blog, which all fans, young and old, can have a place to go to find what they need, from drawing references, to the history of the games!
