Species headcanons for rmau?? I love hearing everyone’s different interpretations and headcanons!

Yee!!! I'm so excited people are interested!!!

I've had these percolating for a while now - like, 2 years, actually!!! I keep adding onto and adjusting specifics of the different species, or adding new ones, but I'll list the my shortlist of Hermits/Lifers and their species here, and then I'll start posting the details for species individually, before making a masterpost with links to all of them and this!!!

But yeah, here's my list, under the cut!!!

(Edit: I just realized I forgot to mention what the names in parentheses are - that's in reference to another aspect of the AU, called Code Bonding - which will get its own post after the species. The names are their Code Bonded partner! Also, if someone has a question mark next to their species, it means I haven't solidified my headcanon for them yet, and I'm welcome to suggestions! I'll edit this as I solidify or add ideas!)

hello hello! been following you for a while now, always been jealous at seeing all the posts you make about wonderful birds and wildlife you see in Florida. well, I've finally gotten the opportunity to visit a friend in Florida and as an enthusiastic birder/nature person who's never been further south than NYC (anywhere in the world), I am SO THRILLED that I'll finally get to visit; the tickets are booked for the end of March! I was wondering, if you're at all familiar with the Tampa area (and ofc get a chance to even answer this), if you have recommendations for good parks or places to go for optimal birding or wildlife-watching? :) if not, no worries, I'll use the powers of Google for good ideas. thanks so much!!

I’m absolutely delighted for you; you’re going to get to see one of the very best bits of Florida on your trip!! The ecology of the Tampa Bay area is something I could talk about for days. It is the state’s largest estuary and a place where discoveries are made constantly. In just 2021 they found a brand new species of whale that lives off the Tampa bay! The place is a biologists absolute dream ��

No trip to Tampa would be complete without exploring Hillsborough River state park and Cockroach Bay Preserve (don’t mind the name it’s genuinely breathtaking). Picnic park is great if you want to see some lovely beach and Circle B Bar Reserve (if you can make an hour drive) is one of the coolest places in the state.

I always head canoned jimmy to be a golden retriever and joel to be a tiny feral dogo

but they are clearly not here and I wonder what breed you drew them as and why you choose them to be that in the au

golden retriever was actually one of the breeds that i was considering in the brainstorming stages (along with some terrier breeds) but i eventually settled on the good old beagle for jimmy.

to me personally, beagle fits because they and their hound cousins are just a little more plucky and scrappy than "himbo-soft" golden retrievers are stereotyped as. jimmy is brash and foolhearted to an hilarious degree so i wanted to give him a more "goofy but still a hunting dog" feeling if that makes any sense at all.

also beagles are known for baying and i think it could function as a fun parallel symbol to the canary stuff he has going on.

and lastly, scott is a sheltie (and martyn and tango are medium-small sized breeds as well), so i wanted jimmy to fit in those size ranges and dynamics. he also just doesn't read big or small dog to me so medium size he is!

and good ole joel is a jack russel because that breed is terror on tiny legs. joel has a truly potent amount of small dog energy with the ferocity and gaul to back it up, so he gets the jack russ because those guys are as if a rabid animal and also 200 live grenades was packed into 10-pounds worth of dog.

it was a debate on whether to give grian, bdubs, or joel the jack russel terrier as they are all (just a little) napoleon-complex personalities to me but jack russel fit joel best design-wise and i ended up finding breeds that work with the other two better

going back to my mcyt roots,,,

read a few fics of fantasy hermitcraft where the hermits are a community of hybrids and mumbo is a human looking for them so they can give grian safety and i was like "how can i make this even more nerdy?"

anyways, they're mechanized now.

the villys are a trio of hybrids who run loose and cause chaos in order to free captive hybrids. no two hijinks of theirs are exactly the same, so there's no way to prepare for when they decide to target a group of hunters. when it's just the trio, only few live to tell the tale.

there is also a fourth member, a human. when the human joins, they become the mechanisms. no one lives to tell the tale. it's said that the human holds a bloodlust like no other when it comes to the hunters.

they introduce themselves as the risky experiments of one dr. tammy funkbeat. nobody knows if she actually exists or not. there are multiple square holes and brutal redstone traps around their main base of operations so that no one can find it or live to tell others where it is.

the main cast:

dr. tammy funkbeat (rumors of what she is vary) - an immortal doctor who saved the mechanisms lives by mechanising them. didn't understand the consequences of what would happen to them until the first time a death happened.

grian (avian hybrid) - the main face of the villys. often lets himself get captured so he can free the captured hybrids on the inside and set everything ablaze. you'll know he's been there by the amount of explosion aftermaths you'll fine. he was escaping his own capture when his left arm got injured and infected to the point where everything from the elbow down needed to be amputated. that is his mechanism.

gem (deer hybrid) - the most unsuspecting member of the villys. she likes to lead hunters to traps that were set up and laugh in their faces as they all painfully fall one by one. they have still yet to learn to be weary of the lone deer hybrid who appears in the areas they like to hunt in. she was severely wounded in her eyes when hunters attacked her community to the point that she could no longer see. those are her mechanism.

pearl (wolf hybrid) - the brains of the villys. she likes to keep to the shadows and stalk hunters like they stalk innocent hybrids, causing them paranoia. nobody knows if the carnage left behind by a pack of wolves is because of her or not. she was caught in a fire and inhaled too much smoke which severely damaged her lungs. those are her mechanism.

mumbo (once human, now something else) - the most dangerous member of the mechanisms to hunters. he often stays behind and makes the weapons the villys use against hunters with redstone, each one more dangerous than the last. hunters fear the once human who's always bathed in their blood whenever he goes out. he was helping grian escape when his right leg was injured past the point of no return and needed to be amputated once they both met the doctor. that is his mechanism.

i realized i never posted what i did for @hermitadaymay ! obviously a lot of them are wips and Im gonna post em all again when they’re complete, and yes it’s June now lmao- but this was a ton of fun to do, i draw a lot but barely ever post and weirdly I don’t feel too shy about it cuz Im super proud of a lot of their designs hehe

my ramblings- i hc that they can all vaguely change forms between smps/seasons, so this is more like. their “defaults or whatever. also ignore the difference in sizes anytime i noticed they were too small/big i was too far in hehe

"My last week of being sick and manipulative" ... I know her too well. I think this whole "we are the villains" thing is letting her be heavy handed in the guise of "reporting in villainous activity to the team." I'm not mad about it

I like this trap. I like the way they're disguising it, I like the way it looks like "oh, the builders need a pretty path", I like the way they're making sure they don't get got by their own traps. Very clever.

... I can't tell if Etho is trying to help Gem, hurt Gem, or just. cause chaos. But sure! Give Gem every saddle on the server, that's fun. It'll make something happen eventually, surely.

I know yes and-ing is fun, but I'm shocked at how often Gem gets away with stuff. Scar catches her snooping, asks what she wants, she answers honestly, he just gives it to her for free, and she walks away. I don't understand

A THIRD??? Grian wants this series to be so short. At least Impulse lived. So it's not like they made more enemies, right? Righttttttt?

Signs don't stack in this version??? They are never, ever leaving that hole.

They're such pitiful villains that everyone is reassuring them that they're good villains, and that they're supposed to be a little pitiful... and Gem lets herself be reassured? Says it gave her an idea? I'm excited to see where she takes this

So maybe I'm missing something OH GRIAN KILLED TANGO/MUMBO WHAT??? Was the final square hole expansion a boogey thing??? (took me 3 rewatches to think to check chat and actually see the message)

I am soso happy with this new "blunt honesty as manipulation" thing, it really works, in terms of her villain character and general effectiveness. If people don't trust her to begin with, the best thing to do is be honest, throw them off guard, and then get what she wants. (once again, Gem's playing with her reputation and public perception) I don't think it'll work on everyone, but it's very fun when it does. And it leads to some awesome lines.

It seems like Gem's got a lot of ideas about how she wants to play a villain. The cards she's shown so far seem to show that she prefers manipulation and causing chaos, and that she's happy to go along with causing "accidents" and playing "pranks." She's keeping careful track of the social game (tallying up their allies and enemies with Grian), but she doesn't seem at all content with playing it safe. I think every season, she learns something new about how she wants to play the game. In Wild Life, she learned that the middle of the map is too busy for her tastes, and that playing it safe can end up being very dangerous. So she's back in a corner (but not up a mountain) and making risky choices with her life while working out her newest approach to the social game.

Closing thoughts: Once again, this was very fun! I'm very happy to see Gem in her element (winning the social game, even when her actions should mean she's throwing it), lovely to watch the Lifers bounce off each other.
