Color Out of Space (2019)

We’re getting there but Richard Stanley’s Color Out of Space still isn’t the definitive adaptation of H. P. Lovecraft’s story. The film’s got terrific visuals. It captures the weird brand of horror. It's frightening. If only it knew when to let your imagination do the heavy lifting.

One night, a strangely-colored meteor crash-lands in the Gardner family's yard. After the rock disappears, Nathan (Nicolas Cage), his wife Theresa (Joely Richardson), their children Lavinia (Madeleine Arthur), Benny (Brendan Meyer), and Jack (Julian Hilliard) put it out of their mind, unaware the strange color left behind is affecting them.

After having seen 2010’s Die Farbe/The Color, it’s disappointing to see an adaptation of the 1927 story that's not learning from its innovation. If the film had been in 3D, you might’ve gotten away with shooting this story in color but as is, something doesn’t quite click. When Nathan says he can’t quite describe the meteor was before it disappeared, you want to pull him aside and ask “are you sure? I know I could.” The film’s other major fault lies in the special effects. They’re top-notch but there are too many of them. As we see the color affect the family more and more, the problem is exactly that. It leaves little to the imagination and often indulges in gruesome spectacles when implications would’ve been far more effective.

I must also direct criticisms toward Nicolas Cage. When his character is normal, he’s perfectly fine. When he’s under the color’s influence, it’s like Cage’s voicing a character from an animated film aimed at very young kids. He’s too much. The highlight instead is Tommy Chong as a squatter who has the creepiest scene.

More often than not, Color out of Space is effective. An alien color that infects its surroundings is such a strange concept and that oddity is captured here. Everyone seems to be influenced by it differently but rather than seeming random, it suggests an agenda too big to comprehend. Initially, I questioned setting the story in modern-day but the electronics the family use also fall victim to the color in unique ways, which means the thing can affect your mind, your body, energy, and maybe even time? How do you fight back against that? You're utterly powerless, which fills you with shivers and despair. Everything you think you grasp builds to an impressive climax. That’s where the movie gets REALLY good so if you were kind of lukewarm about it, stick around. The payoff is worth the wait.

Color out of Space is is not a typical horror movie. Don’t expect a fast pace or high body count. It’s about the discomfort you feel when confronted with things you would’ve never imagined. Its over-reliance on showing rather than implying and a sometimes-gonzo-in-a-good-way-but-most-often-not performance by Nicolas Cage are its biggest weaknesses. Unfortunately, they’re significant enough to make you wish someone would take yet another crack at the story but until then, it offers a nice, unique brand of scares. (August 14, 2020)

My #Lovecraftian film #TheQuantumTerror has been in post production for quite sometime. This wasn't intended but on such a low budget I'm bound by many limitations that can only be solved by creative thinking and patience. When this movie finally comes out it's going to be the best film it can be under such constraints but the passion will be apparent. I care very deeply about this film and so does everyone who worked on it for that matter. I thank everyone who has contributed and waited for this film to come out, including the journalists such as @joshisdamnfine at @dreadcentral and Ash Hamilton at Horror-Fix who showed that they believed in this project from the start. Die Farbe (2010)

H.P. Lovecraft’s The Color Out of Space is so good I just know someday it’ll be made into a great film. In the meantime, the low-budget German production of Die Farbe/The Color will hold us over. It translates the story from paper to the screen well and makes some creative choices along the way. Some of the decisions are not ones I would’ve made but there’s good suspense and a few moments that are genuinely and satisfyingly unsettling.

Jonathan (Ingo Heise) is looking for his father, who disappeared in a small town in Germany, where years ago a meteorite made of an unknown substance crashed one night. Inside was a strange substance of a color no one had ever seen that began affecting the nearby people, animals, and vegetation in unexplainable and unnerving ways.

Part of what makes this film and the original story so unnerving and effective is its premise. it's not an alien virus, being, or weapon, it's far more otherworldly than that; it's a color. How do you fight back against a color that spreads? What could a color even do? The more you learn, the stranger and more unsettling its ideas become.

This is a story that's inherently difficult to translate, as the "monster" is something that can't be described. Writer/director Huan Vu's solution is so elegant you'd be hard-pressed to find a better one. The entire film is shot in black-and-white. When we see the titular color, it's a patch of actual color. It isn’t actually something you’ve never seen, but the point is made. It looks and feels alien. It's so well done I want aspiring filmmakers to see Die Farbe so they can be inspired, so they can expand their idea of how to use the visual medium of film to convey what an alien, supernatural, or otherworldly threat could be.

What prevents The Color from being the end-all, be-all adaptation is the technical issues. The performances are only ok. Combined with some dubious special effects and the film is unmistakenly low-budget. That can be forgiven, but the story is also slow - at least until the narrator reveals the magnitude of the horror taking place. Trimming some of the lingering shots and replacing them with scenes of the soon-to-be affected people and their descent into delirium would’ve greatly improved the film… but it’s also possible the performers simply weren’t up to the task.

Many of H.P. Lovecraft’s stories deal with such a unique brand of horror that translating them to a visual medium is impossible. At least it feels that way until you’ve seen The Color. While not perfect, it’s ambitious, faithful to the material, and will make you fidget in your seat the way the story should. One day, this adaptation will be eclipsed by another. Until then, watch all the way until the end of The Color, past the credits to get the full story. (Original German with English Subtitles, On Blu-ray, January 12, 2018)

Just got done watching The Color Outer Space and holy shit it was amazing. It has to be the best HP Lovecraft movie since Re-Animator.
