I didn’t think I would do this yet but everyone else is so why not. I’ve also already written a post script about what I think I did well and where I missed the mark that you can read here.

1. Introduce yourself and explain why you are a good fit for this internship. 273 words

My name is William Moran and I've been playing and thinking about games my entire life. I graduated from Ohio State University with a bachelor's degree in English and currently operate a Jimmy John's store as the general manager.

I tackle problems with a critical eye and mind—I want to analyze how the details contribute to the greater picture. What's our objective and how do the small things we do along the way affect our ability to reach it? I trained at this in college as I looked at how all parts of a text are structured in order to convey and create meaning. I use this at Jimmy John's as I set short term and long term goals and work with my team in order to make those dreams our reality. I've observed and toyed with these interactions through games played since I was a child. I understand that changing any aspect of a game will change how it plays and I care about finding out how to make changes that will make games better.

I value gaming for the unique and entertaining experience it is, the way it creates a story, and how that brings people together. Games allow us to share a positive experience, sometimes with complete strangers. Creating that experience, giving people opportunities to make meaning and build stories with each other through game play, is the more important thing I feel a game can do.

If I am selected for this internship, I will devote myself to ensuring that Magic continues to be the incredible success that brings people together by creating fun new experiences for them.

2. An evergreen mechanic is a keyword mechanic that shows up in (almost) every set. If you had to make an existing keyword mechanic evergreen, which one would you choose and why? 343 words

Skulk was considered by R&D as an evergreen mechanic contender and I know a lot of players also thought it could be a shared mechanic for blue and black. It turns out the design space for skulk isn't very big. More than that, my assessment of the mechanic is that it's an evasion mechanic and putting it in blue and black doesn't make sense—those two colors already have the most evasion in the game and don't need more. I also think they want a shared mechanic that cares about combat between creatures. But I'm not talking about a shared mechanic for blue and black here. I'm talking about how I believe skulk could be useful to a different color.

Green's only evasion mechanic is trample. While green does get the odd Charging Badger and other small creatures with trample, it makes the most sense on large creatures that have more power to trample over blockers. Green lacks an evasion mechanic that makes sense for when its smaller creatures need a way to get through. What can we do there?

I propose skulk. I would suggest using it on small green creatures for evasion. Primary in green, then secondary but very sparingly used in blue and black only if their gluttony of other evasion mechanics really don't make sense for a design. Skulk does have limited design space and while I think green can make uniquely good use of it, my suggestion can't change that limit. Shifting it to green at least puts it in a color that has yet to see it and without it being a block mechanic it can be used more sparingly here. Some prior cards could even be made as color shifted variants in green (such as a creature with skulk and deathtouch).

Green's Giant Growth effects make pumping a skulking creature after blocks are (not) declared more of a reality. Now my 2/2 skulking bear might actually be five damage to the face if my opponent chooses not to trade with their own small utility creature.

3. If you had to remove evergreen status from a keyword mechanic that is currently evergreen, which one would you remove and why? 300 words

For me there is a hands down best answer that no other current evergreen keywords can even compete with: defender. I'd drop it.

Defender is a down side mechanic that prohibits a creature that has the mechanic from attacking. By the very nature of the mechanic, you can't use it a lot in set design. Defenders just sit there and eat damage without being able to progress the game toward an end and this simply prolong the game often without advancing the board state in a meaningful way. On the relatively few cards that use defender it would be no issue simply to write out this creature “can't attack.”

The bulk of defender designs can be classified as one of two types. The first type is 0/N creatures where they have zero power and some amount of toughness. With the ability to buff these cheaply and since they are costed knowing they can't attack, these designs absolutely need “can't attack” rules. But since you don't typically put a bulk of game play focus and rules text on a literal wall—sitting there blunting attacks doesn't make for exciting games—writing out the defender rules text on these cards won't greatly distract from other important elements.

The second type is a group of creatures designed around the idea they they lose defender. Hightide Hermit is the latest of these designs. By ditching defender and rewording he ability that causes it to be able to attack as if it didn't have defender, you can actually drop a line of rules text and the design looks cleaner to me overall. I'd word it as “Hightide Hermit can't attack unless you pay EE.” It parallels Propaganda effects and I'd really want to consider this wording even in a world where defender lives on at evergreen status.

4. You’re going to teach Magic to a stranger. What’s your strategy to have the best possible outcome? 348 words

First, let's define the best possible outcome so we know what we're hoping for: the stranger should walk away wanting to play more Magic. The best way we can get that result is for them to have fun.

When teaching a game, especially Magic, it's easy to get bogged down in the trap of explaining too much of the rules up front. Having taught a few people how to play Magic, my preferred method is to play first and explain as we go. I'll grab two of the new Planeswalker decks and give a brief hook about what they'll be doing: “You're an evil dragon mastermind and you want to make my life as miserable as possible!” Then we draw seven cards.

I like to play the very first game with our hands revealed. This lets me advise them about what to play—”Start with a land. Put it on the table in front of you.”—and if they have questions they can point to a card and ask me without feeling they're showing me information they should keep hidden. “Now you use that land to cast a spell. Turn it sideways to show you used it this turn.” Ideally they're casting a creature and soon swinging with it to attack me. Their first Magic experience is that they're really playing and I've explained the bare essentials like how lands match up with the colors of mana on costs.

They don't hear about a hundred different rules and specific game terms that would distract and overwhelm them. Perhaps most importantly, they see a narrative develop. Mighty wizards build up their forces by casting spells and increasing their power supply until one of them can tip the odds in their favor and seize the day.

I want them to enjoy the world and story of Magic they get a glimpse of through the cards. I want them to have fun trying to beat me in the game. If I can accomplish those two things then I know the answer to “Do you want to play again?” will be an emphatic “YES!”

5. What’s Magic’s greatest strength and why? 277 words

Without a doubt the best thing Magic has going for it is that game after game it still remains immensely fun. It does this by immersing the player in so many ways; the art looks cool, it's a social experience, it provides a unique challenge, there are so many ways to play it, and every game you play feels fresh and engaging.

I picked up the game back around 2006 because it looked interesting. I kept playing it because I was having fun even though I wasn't really sure my friends and I were playing it correctly. New players will come into the game out of curiosity, or because their friends play it, or because they found a sibling;s old cards in a shoebox. They'll stick with it only because they have fun with it. If they don't have fun then they'll put it down and look for something entertaining.

Players keep playing Magic because it's fun. Maybe it's the lore, or grinding tournaments, or obscure rules interactions that enable silly combos, or just spending time with friends playing a game. Whatever it is, they've found the parts of Magic that are the most fun for them. If those parts stop being fun, it's only a matter of time before they ask themselves how much longer they should indulge a hobby that stopped being as entertaining to them.

One immensely difficult aspect to continuing Magic's success is determining how all these different players, from the beginner to the veteran, enjoy the game and ensuring there's enough of that in the products released each your that they all remain happy and excited about what Magic is doing.

6. What’s Magic’s greatest weakness and why? 252 words

The answer's simple; complexity. Magic is so so so complex. It's hard to learn and harder to master. That's a big barrier to learning the game and even a barrier to continuing the game—even pros have limits as to how much complexity they can handle.

Now complexity isn't all bad. It's also a strength of Magic. The game wouldn't be as rich and rewarding as it is if it wasn't also complicated. But the trick is focusing that complexity so that there's a payoff for putting up with it. I shouldn't finish a game of Magic and feel like I just did taxes, but there can be some mentally taxing situations within the game. There can be difficult things to learn and rules to be aware of.

Ideally the complexity is fun. Tracking Storm count is just tedious bookkeeping except I know the payoff is coming and that it's me one shotting you with a Tendrils when that number gets high enough. That's the secret to making complexity work for the game; always point it toward a fun result. If the player knows a payoff is coming then the act of getting there becomes less tedious and even becomes a source of enjoyment.

The players trust that if they're doing something then there will be a reward for it. There HAS to be a reward. Point them in a direction and have it fizzle out after they've spent time and effort getting there and that's when complexity is really Magic's bane.

7. What Magic mechanic most deserves a second chance (aka which had the worst first introduction compared to its potential)? 257 words

Cipher is solid as an idea but it was executed poorly. What it did well is promise free copies of spells and require players to attack to get them. What it did poorly is hamstring development since the potential copies were unlimited, have limited design space, and use wonky wording (encode?).

I want a mechanic that still delivers free copies of spells and encourages attacking, but which can be developed better—and I'm not going to use “encode” to accomplish it, just words already commonly used in Magic. I'm calling the mechanic Spellstrike—you strike your opponent and you get spells. Think of it as Rebound meets Cipher. I'd word the reminder text something like “If you cast this from your hand, exile it on a creature you control as it resolves instead of putting it into your graveyard. After this turn, when that creature attacks, you may cast this card from exile without paying its mana cost.” This successfully navigates the failures of cipher while monopolizing its best aspects.

Because the second cast can only ever happen one time, the initial payment for the spell can almost certainly be less than what we saw for cipher (I would hope spellstrike doesn't ask 2UB for a 1/1 with flying). If triggering upon attack proved too powerful, it could be adjusted to be a combat damage to an opponent trigger as well, but my hope is that this successfully expands the design space since the mechanic now works as a combat trick and thus on instants as well as sorceries.

8. Of all the Magic expansions that you’ve played with, pick your favorite and then explain the biggest problem with it. 292 words

Eldritch Moon cranked the dial on Eldrazi to 11 when some people had had enough of them at 10. I'm not one of those people. I love Eldrazi and Shadows Over Innistrad block was such a unique blend of Emrakul and Innistrad that I fell madly in love (pun intended). That block, and Eldritch Moon specifically, is some of the best Magic I've ever experienced—from limited to constructed to the art, story, and individual cards, it all rocked! Which makes it a real shame that it came right after Battle for Zendikar block and part of the audience was burnt out on Eldrazi.

BFZ block particularly agitated people with some mechanical choices (devoid for one) that soured peoples' opinions of Eldrazi. Add into that Eldrazi are already contentious because of their specific game play previously (battle cruiser Magic and annihilator) and creatively because they look unsettling and destroy your favorite plane. People were ready to move on from Eldrazi after BFZ block and there was no better way than with the best plane ever, Innistrad. I can still throw a little 1/1 against my opponent and see if they'll kill it. But I can also sac my Evolving Wilds. Let's talk about that for a moment because it highlights one of the best aspects of revolt and how it's definitely not just a morbid clone.

Typical game play with Evolving Wilds is to play it and then crack it on your opponent's next end step to search out your land, withholding the information of which land you want as long as possible while still getting it untapped to use on your next turn. But what if you need revolt active? Perhaps the best play now is to hold onto my Evolvng Wilds so I can activate revolt whenever I need to. I need to assess if the mana and fixing is more important than the revolt boost.

Any mechanic that can make me reassess a basic aspect of the game that I usually take for granted is doing some really good work.

I would abolish the legendary rule and make legendary simple a marker with no rules baggage.

Legendary is a negative mechanic in the rules sense—you can only control one copy of a legendary something. If you put four copies of of a legend in your deck then most of the time drawing multiple copies of that leaves you with dead cards in your hand. But on the flip side, legendary cards are usually cool and powerful cards that players will want to play even more than normal. They aren't often so powerful that a player needs to be limited to only controlling one copy at a time and the few times that is true, rules text on the specific card that recreates the legendary rule in some manner would do the trick.

Legendary creatures are things players want to play and they will be better able to play them if they can put four copies in their decks without being penalized for it with dead draws of what would otherwise be an awesome draw. Furthermore, ditching the legend rules means Magic is free to make anything a legend if it feels legendary. Why would you want to do that? Commander is such a popular format that it's snagged a dedicated yearly product slot. The best way to support that format is by printing more legendary creatures and being free to make creatures legendary especially when they will encourage a new deck archetypes in the format. If legendary is only used as a marker for cool unique creatures without rules baggage then, once again, you're free to make anything a legend if it feels legendary. Woodworking - The Beginners Guide

USince the dawn of civilization, humankind has carved objects from fallen trees; from the simplest and most utilitarian items to elaborate works of art. The earliest forms of the transportation were created from wooden elements such as the boat, the wheel, and the carriage were all conceived and created from wood. And throughout history, hundreds of other important items that we still use today were built from wood. Take today's jet planes, for example, the Wright Brothers successful wooden airplane made aviation history, along with other wooden prototypes and designs of the period, and set the stage for construction of our modern aircraft. Men, who sailed here in boats made of wood, as it was known, discovered the "New World". The voyage of Christopher Columbus made a successful landing in Massachusetts, over 500 years ago - the majestic Mayflower, constructed from wooden timbers, made the discovery possible. And who could forget about those famous Viking longboats? At least one of these mighty ships crossed the North Atlantic about a thousand years ago, and made a successful landing at L'anse Meadows, in Newfoundland, Canada. These longboats, called "Drakkars", featured impressive and innovative designs, and utilized a unique, oaken 'plank-lap' design. It's been estimated that the planks used to build some of these Viking longboats, came from oak trees over eighty-feet tall! It would be hard to argue that lumber was history's most important building material right up until the widespread use of steel and Portland cement, in the mid 19th Century.

But wood still holds an enormous market today, with the use of wood for framing lumber in homes, expensive cabinetry, exotic woodcarvings, and the bustling furniture industry. Of course, there's the use of wood in crafts, hobbies, and other projects, collectively referred to as woodworking. Fine Woodworking is a long-cherished tradition, enjoyed by young and old. As a hobby, woodcraft takes on many forms from carving artful figurines, to building patio furniture. It used to be that woodworking "secrets" and tricks of the fine woodworking trade were handed down through the generations, from master craftsmen to apprentices. To some degree, many of these secrets are still passed along, from master to beginner.

Fine woodworking is an activity that requires patience, precision, and attention to detail. That's n something you can acquire from reading alone. Though woodworking can be quite pleasurable, it's also serious business. For many, working with wood is more than just a pastime, it's a way of life. Serious craftsmen and women are deeply involved with furthering their knowledge about fine woodworking, by studying the methods and techniques of those who came before them. The serious woodworker tends to aspire to becoming a "master" craftsman, focusing on creating useful and valuable items, like furniture and cabinetry, while the hobbyist tends to spend a few days, here and there, doing "craft"-type work at a leisurely pace like carving whimsical figurines or making a simple book case or spice rack. If you do live in an older house, you can learn a lot about woodworking simply through careful observation of the existing woodwork throughout your home.

Study the woodwork in places like the stairs, the kitchen, and even in the basement, and you'll likely get a glimpse into the past. Some of the fine woodworking methods practiced by early craftsmen and carpenters are still used today. If you have young children in your family, or grandchildren, and you would like to build them a swing-set for the backyard or how about building a nice, sturdy picnic table, for your summertime family cookouts and gatherings? Every household has books, some have lots of books but there never seems to be enough available shelf space. Why not build your own bookcases? A handsome, custom-made bookcase always looks better than a store-bought unit. There are a countless number of woodworking projects you can do around the house, and with your newly acquired knowledge, you'll gain the confidence needed to tackle those projects, and put your skills to the test.

Woodworking can be a most enjoyable and fulfilling activity. There's nothing like the satisfaction of seeing your finished project put to use. Like anything in life, improving one's skill comes through plenty of practice and woodworking is no different. Learn all you can about fine woodworking. Read journals, watch those who do it for a living, and take advice from the professionals. Be patient, and learn to become detail-oriented. Follow the old rule of "measure twice, cut once." Those four words of wisdom are timeless and true, and you will remember them every time you goof on a measurement. In time, you'll be building all those items that you never dreamed you could. Arc Warden has been in the game for a while. However, people have still not understood how to play the hero. Below is a detailed guide about how to play the hero. Pros:

one of the best snowballers in the game.

strong teamfighter, very strong pusher.

wrecks hard disorganized pub teams.

very good against non-unit heroes if left 1v1.

late game rat menace.

Cons:

early ganks slaughter his progression.

against unit heroes like Broodmother (his no.1 counter) immediately swap lanes.

He's a very immobile hero that's extremely positioning dependent. Most of the fights you take are already decided by how good you placed yourself and your Tempest.

Skillset

FLUX - deals damage over time when there are no units around the enemy. Try to use it at lvl2 to harass your enemy in the lane.

MAGNETIC FIELD - provides full physical evasion to everyone inside the field. Buffs you, neutrals and your team with attack speed (tower ignores evasion on the creeps).

SPARK WRAITH - aka techies mine. use them sparingly because they're mana costly. If people are dumb enough you can stack them near a tp spot in the tree, they tp into it sometimes.

TEMPEST DOUBLE - Sixth man off the bench, you cannot use consumables on him. He shares full stats with the real Arc Warden. Rapier isn't cloned anymore. Whenever you summon him try to use his mana to the fullest. (for instance you're jungling, kill the smallest creeps first, use the Flux from the Tempest on the biggest creep)

Arc Warden is not an easy hero to master. He's easier than Meepo, but harder than Invoker. If that makes any sense. Microing him and the Tempest itself isn't really a hassle. It becomes hard when you get 6(7) slotted. That being said he's extremely item dependent.

Extremely Item Dependent

After getting an Aquila and Boots, you're buying a Midas. ~2100 gold for an item that gets you to your second farming (and fighting) item, Maelstrom, which is ~2700 gold. That's nearly 6.5k early gold for farming items. Compare that stupid amount for any other agility carry:

Slark: Shadow Blade, Treads, Aquila, Wand ~5.6k early gold and he's pretty much ready to fight.

Phantom Lancer: Wand, Treads, Aquila, Diffusal blade ~6k gold and ready to fuck shit up.

Arc Warden with those items can only properly set up to farm up the next core items that allow him to actually fight.

This guide is divided into few sections which cover up when to pick him, laning, items, skills and talent progression.

Draft

His hardest counters are those who can get into your face - Slark, PA, Spectre and illusion based heroes like CK and PL. But if they got into your face, you're not playing him well. Positioning is the key in those matchups. Also, try not to pick him up against those pesky 5man-group-up-and-push-together lineups. First 15mins you're completely useless to your team so you will have a hard time catching up. He absolutely wrecks every 1v1 mid matchup (except Brood) if you're skilled enough.

Honorable mentions that don't stand a chance against Arc are. Sniper, Shadow Fiend, Zeus, Skywrath, Clinkz, Ember and Storm pre level 6 and pretty much any melee hero that shows up.

Skill Order

Skill order depends on the matchup. Obviously, at 6 you are 3-0-2-1 which works great against any hero. If you're against an Invoker, you will have to take a different approach and go 1-1-3-1 to be able to trade hits and kill off his forge spirit. My choice of skills is 3-1-1-1 if you've managed to deny a lot from them and establish the level difference. That kind of skill build allows you to bait them into your Magnetic Field which can bring you some pesky kills pre level 5.

Proper Combo

You always flux first. It guarantees spark not missing them when they run away. 1 is the Main, 2 is the Tempest.1Q, ULT, 2Q, 1E, 2E and 2W to finish off or protect yourself when diving the tower. The reasoning behind this combo is mana conservation on the real Arc.

Talents

LVL10:+8% CD reduction, It really proves it's worth later when you're TPing everywhere.

LVL15: I'm a firm believer that Flux range is superior to HP talent. Being able to Flux them as they flee from the fights or as you approach the fight from across the screen is OP. Also, you almost always never want to be in the middle of a fight with the real Arc. Imagine real Arc as a backline Sniper and his Tempest as an Axe. Tempest is meant to soak up the damage. Although, against PA, Slark and WR I pick up the HP talent and an early Blademail.

LVL20: Attack range. I see that Icefrog meant some kind of support/caster Arc Warden coming into the play with the CD reduction on the sparks. It is doable with the level 25 talent. But physical Arc Warden is always preferred since he scales much better into the lategame.

LVL25: Well if you're constantly fighting take the +30 lifesteal. If you wanna play a worse version of Techies, take the spark dmg buff. It's good when the enemy supports don't expect it. You stack upto 3-4 sparks and they're probably dead. But since we're in lategame, pickoffs are very often rare. People group up and march down mid with the creeps. So, there are games when it's good and games where It's criminally bad to take it.

Laning

Mid 90% of the time. 10% safelane. The reason for taking the mid is solo XP and the pure potential of killing their mid over and over again. Once you hit lvl6 - it becomes 2v1.

When mid

Start with Wraith band, Branch, Faerie fire and 2 pooled tangos. Blocking your creeps every wave is very important to be able to harass them properly. Your last hitting ability is crucial those few first waves. Try not to waste level 1 mana and completely focus on your last hitting. Sub 3 min Aquila is a must. Follow it up by naked brown boots. You will need a ward to be able to see them on their ramp. This is probably your first power spike if you catch enemy offguard (not close to their creeps). You flux them and chase them down.

Some people advocate on getting Phase Boots. I haven't experimented with those yet but I believe that +24 dmg *2 units does make a difference early. In my opinion those boots are a waste of gold that early on since you need BoTs very early to contribute to your team. When you hit level 6 this is where the fun starts. Remember the part where I've said to always block your creeps a bit? You do this so their ranged creep is in the river, not on top of their ramp. This allows you to place a zoning spark wraith behind the creeps.

This way enemy has 2 choices: eat up a spark or not get close to it. He eats up a spark: instakill with the above said combo. He stands there and doesn't do anything: you deny everything and lasthit everything. If you have vision of him highground and at least level 3 flux you can attempt the combo above. If you manage to catch the first flux, which is very likely to succeed.

Other small tricks are to never stop harassing them with right clicks (try not to aggro their creeps). It's very frustrating for them because you have a superior attack range in most of the cases. It makes them pull back from the creeps which again leaves you with kill opportunities. There is also a trick if you fail to block your creeps. Hit the ranged creep 2 times and place level 2 spark on them. If enemy stays close you combo up. It's all mind games from there on. Finish up your Midas after you've gathered those 3-4 kills.

When Safelane

you will be behind on XP, but once you reach lvl6 tell your supports to leave, same principles above apply, harass them and zone them out with sparks

The transition from Early to Mid Game

Your objective is to bring down their mid tower. From there you TP to the weakest sidelane and help them bring down another tower. With that amount of map control you finish up the Maelstrom and farm BoTs. Try to realise that this itemisation is most common in 99% of the games. If you're against a pushing lineup I'd rather get a Mjollnir to be able to deal with them.

Mid Game

You got your Maelstrom and the BoTs sub 18mins or even less. Now what? Split push like a maniac? Join fights? These great questions don't have great answers. It's really tough to judge as a beginner what you should be doing. Communicate with your team. I always tell them that I will probably spend 3-4 more minutes farming up a Mjollnir by split pushing.

Try to TP to the outskirts of fights. Park your real Arc Warden behind and spam spells with him, while microing the Tempest in front. Never, ever come in as 2 unless you're completely sure that Slark is on another side of the map. Or that they don't have gap closer heroes capable of backlining you. In lower bracket games people seem to believe that the Tempest is an illusion so they don't expect him dishing out full damage while ignoring him. He's the 6th hero on your team. So to sum it up, fight with your team, gain map control, jungle their wards, ward their jungle, etc.

Itemisation

You can build whatever you want to. He's such a diverse hero. SnY and Manta? E-blade and Dagons? Gotcha fam. Situational builds aside, go to build, after Maelstrom and BoTs is as follows:

Blademail, SB or Pike, Mjollnir, Orchid, Nullifier --- constant fighting build against gap closers or spell spammers

Mjollnir, SB or Pike, Orchid, Nullifier, MKB --- true right click build

Some games demand a Force Staff (Riki smokes, saving your teammates, double forcestaffing yourself out) while some allow for using SB to infiltrate their jungle and picking off their carry. It's really up to your playstyle. I've found equal success with both, sometimes I even get both. BKB is often that 7th item in your backpack. Don't fear to get it. If you're against a Slark, I suggest getting a Hex instead of the Nullifier (has a projectile time, Hex is instant and not purgeable). In most cases Nullifier is preferred since it boosts your damage output.

Late Game

As I've said in the beginning, Arc Warden is a late-game menace. You can always keep 2 lanes pushed in. You will probably sit on 10k gold while being six slotted. Buy your carry a Moonshard if possible. With the acquired map control get the Aegis on your carry. While pushing in try to keep your team under Magnetic field since it gives them the attack speed. If you're defending try to reach their backlines with the Tempest (Shadow Blade or Force Staff). Always keep a track on your buyback status.

Bonus Tips

Try to synergize first few Midas usages (earlier maelstrom)

Getting chased and nowhere to run? place yourself near any trees and field that place so you can tp out or kill them

Learn to double forcestaff yourself, very useful skill

Don't be afraid to bring yourself any sort of regen, going back to fountain is the worst outcome

While my blog and digital photo books have taken over my hobby time recently, my heart is more in the realm of paper crafting even if it’s been almost a year since I tackled a project. The days are just too short to do everything I want to do, so sometimes things get put aside for a while. I know that eventually I will circle back to my paper crafts and put my obsessively over stocked craft room to good use again.

I have always been drawn to other crafters who excel in the field and have an entire bookcase dedicated to books written by fellow memory keepers sharing their tips and tricks. So, when I realized that there was a quilling artist located in Maine, I knew I had my letter Q locked up. I too have tried my hand at quilling, but on a much more simplistic and less successful level.

Stacy Bettencourt creates incredible designs that bring paper to life. When I scrolled through her website, Mainely Quilling, and looked and the portfolio of designs she has done I am truly in awe. I recommend visiting her Pinterest board to see the range and scope of her work. It is impossible to pick a favorite although I find her quilled lobsters especially interesting probably because I love all things connected to Maine.

How long have you been quilling?

I have been quilling since late 2014.

Are you self-taught or did you take any lessons?

I am completely self-taught as are most quillers. It’s a medium that works easily and has a lot of possibilities. I think that perfectionists and control-freaks excel at it as we get to micromanage hundreds of teeny weeny pieces of paper and they have to do what we make them do – or else! (To the rubbish bin…) lol

Do you find your other art skills have helped you with your quilling projects?

I think that having innate artistic ability allows quillers to achieve excellence with their work and to create truly masterful artwork, though I have seen people with no “known” artistic talents become quite amazing quillers. Maybe it’s more to do with details and patience and persistence than artistic flair? I’m not entirely sure how it works. I think that my background in art has helped with presentation and color choices and balancing and knowing what people might like to look at.

Where do you find inspiration for your designs?

I find inspiration in my daily life mostly. I get ideas when I think of something that interests me. I love adapting photographs and illustrations into the quilled medium. I like to remake line art. I often make things that I loved as a child – hence the horse, my mother’s house, the church, the lion, etc.

Is there a piece you’re especially proud of?

I’m especially proud of the lion and the horse. The horse was truly a labor of love as she took me over forty hours to complete. The lion was around 30-40 total. The art of quilling isn’t something you can whip up in a few minutes like a sketch. Projects often go on for days, even weeks.

What has been the most challenging piece you have made?

I can’t decide which piece was the most challenging as they all have their moments but in different ways. I tend to move from one extreme to another and with this come new techniques and… of course… challenges. My mother’s house was the first multi-layered piece I did and I had to create new techniques to make it work in four separate layers. The horse was completely “combed” (a technique) and I had to use the paper as paint to create the color gradients and shading. That was a new thing for me.

Are there any tips you would give to someone starting out with quilling?

The tips that I would give to anyone starting out with quilling is to begin with a small assortment of tools and paper. It’s very inexpensive, around $20 will get you through the initial phase where you decide if you like it or not. Google and Youtube are your friends when it comes to learning techniques and finding simple patterns to try out. And possibly the best thing to do is join an online quilling community like the one that I formed last year: Contemporary Quilling. The groups are filled with a wide range of quillers from beginner to expert and you will learn more than you think is possible while gathering inspiration and confidence with your own artwork.

When someone commissions you for a piece, what is the process?

The bulk of my commissions come from someone seeing a piece that I’ve posted on the web somewhere. They use the contact form on my website or message me through my Facebook page. We have a discussion about what they are looking for and I figure out a price for them. Once that’s settled I require a 50% non-refundable deposit to begin the piece and 50% prior to delivery. Most of my customers are from the US and they span from California all the way to the northern tip of Maine.

She also shares tips and tricks on quilling on her website including tutorials which cover everything from tools of the trade to the difference in paper widths and how it impacts your design. I especially liked her video on boucle, beehive, popcorn, continuous scroll. I had no idea how easy this one was to do. And by easy, I mean trying it on a random strip of paper. It would not be easy to use it in a design and make it look as amazing as she does. But, I am going to try it out on my next scrapbook page.

She sells some of her items through her Facebook store, and can be contacted directly for commissions. Wherever your imagination can take you, I’m pretty sure Stacy can follow turning strips of paper into intricate designs full of precision and whimsy.
