Which Mini-Console Should I Cover Next?

We're getting to the end of the game selection on the TurboGrafx-16 Mini, which means I have to put the question to my readers once again. Which of the following mini-consoles would you like to see me cover next?

Sailor Moon Series - 1994 - A Busy Year 

A busy 1994 for the Sailor Moon franchise continued with the release of 2D top-down arcade title Panic in Nakayoshi World for the SNES. This title would also be joined by Bishōjo Senshi Sailor Moon S Jōgai Rantō!? Shuyaku Sōdatsusen and another change of genre for the series, this being Sailor Moon's first foray into the fighting game genre.

Also releasing in 1994 was a second release for the TurboGrafx CD with Bishōjo Senshi Sailor Moon Collection in Japan, this title was a collection of mini games such as a rock-paper-scissors game, a memory input game and a butt sumo game, yes you read that correctly, you must use the butt of one of the characters to push another off of a platform.

Looking on some month old reddit posts, a PC Engine Mini hack (called project Phobos) is being developed, but hasn't being publicly released yet partially due to the pandemic and partially due to them wanting to safely test it so there are no issues/bugs.

Yeah I did get curious about it and research that a bit.

I am kind of over the mini consoles though. So I might look into getting a real Turbografx and an everdrive in the future, but it's very low priority for me. My next console is likely to either be Sega or Playstation.

Like any mini console not every game we could hope for was included with the TurboGrafx-16, but the included library presents a varied cross section of what was on the console. Having only one controller included and no AC adapter for the USB cord are minor complaints but are worth noting.

Seirei Senshi Spriggan (TG-16 Mini)

Oh hello, we are back. Did everyone have a nice holiday? I hope so. Let's talk about TurboGrafx-16 games again. Now in 2025! Looking at my list, we're at... a vertical shoot 'em up? On this console? Weird swing, but let's go.

Seirei Senshi Spriggan is another vertical shooter developed by Compile, this time on the ol' CD format. You play as a mech this time around, and there are clear nods to many of the popular mech anime shows of the time. There are some fancy voiced bits and cutscenes, but once you start playing it's all quite familiar. There are lots of different power-ups to pick up, and depending on which three you're holding onto, your weapon changes. You can also jettison a power-up as a bomb, and this is key to the strategy of the game. Some days, you just have to get rid of a bomb.

Anyway, it's a pretty good time. You would expect that by this point, I'm sure. It's like playing a late 1990s beat 'em up from Capcom. The developer knows exactly how to make an appealing game of this sort, and that's just what you get. The action is solid and relatively approachable (to a point at least) and the presentation is great. The stages are interesting in their designs and the boss battles are fun. I'm not in love with all of the weapons, but that's kind of the point of a Compile shooter. You find the ones you like and roll with them.

At this point, the TurboGrafx-16 Mini is doing victory laps with these excellent shooters. I suppose some might feel it's a bit much, but I think it's characteristic of the real console. And, you know, I'm never going to say no to another good shoot 'em up. Spriggan's another one, and it won't be the last we look at.
