Finally! I've finally got to work on all the Overblot Overhaul designs!

TWST with a Koinatsu reader

Haven't posted for a while. Dengue fever.

Koinatsu is a high ranking courtesan in the Red Light District. She is a supporting character in Demon Slayer's Entertainment District Arc. She is the Oiran of the Tokito House and is a friend of Tanjiro, who disguised as Sumiko to infiltrate the House.

• You didn't know how you got here in the first place... All you remember is that a woman with a cruel smile trapping you within her obi as you struggled... Then you heard Sumiko's voice? Everything went black...

???: ".....Oi........Oira......Oiran! Please wake up!"

???: ".....K-Koinatsu Oiran.... *sob*.... Please don't die!..."

• You wake up gasping for air after hearing your Kamuro shouting for you. Huh?....Where are you right now? Your panic grew each second you try to push the lid of the coffin but it wouldn't budge. "Fnyagh! Gotta find a uniform fast!"

Koinatsu: ".....Eh? A voice?... Ah! Somebody please help me...!"

• Is it getting hotter here or is it just your multi-layered kimono? Now that you've noticed, you're not wearing any kimono. Just some kind of robe. You pushed the coffin's lid off with all of your remaining strength.

???: "F-fnyagh?! W-why the heck are you awake? N-nevermind that! Just give me your robe!"

Koinatsu: "....Wh-what? I apologize but I mustn't-- wait... a talking tanuki!?"

???: "... Hey! I ain't a tanuki! I am the Great Grim! Just gimme your robe!"

• No matter how much you try to protest, the talking tanuki keeps demanding that you strip off your clothing. Eventually, the tanuki's very small patience reached its limit and it looks like he will take the robe by force. The moment he breathed fire at you, you ran. Just ran despite your fatigue. You finally see a figure at a hallway and rushed over...

Koinatsu: "...H-HELP! SOMEBODY PLEASE HELP ME!"

???: "Pardon me?... Wah!"

Koinatsu: " Th-th-there's a m-monster trying to attack me! P-please help!"

???: "A-a monster? How troublesome, I still have to find a missing student...Well since I am gracious, let's go see and restrain it shall we?"

Koinatsu: "...w-w-wait... you..."

• The figure responded to your cry for help and turned around only for you to bump into him and realize that he is also not a human. You couldn't believe all the things you were witnessing... All you could do was tremble in fear--

???: "Ahem! Where did you say the monster is?"

•You were supposed to get married. Tonight was supposed to be your last night--

???: "Fnyagh! There you are! You think you can escape the Great Grim's nose!"

•Is what you are witnessing a part of the deaths lately?--

???: "Stop there, monster!"

???: "Fnyagh! W-what's with this rope?!"

???: "It's not just a rope! It's the lash of love!"

• Did something happened to Sumiko?

???: "Ahem? Hello? I've caught your mon....... Oh. They fainted."

???: ....."Oira......Oiran! I want to play!...."

???: "...Me too!"....

???: "....Eh? Stop copying me!".....

???: ".. I'm not!"....

• Hearing the voices again, you jolted awake and once again find yourself in another location. Seems like an infirmary. White-sheeted beds, the smell of medicine, some guy with animal ears lying down--

.... Animal ears?...

• You look again at the guy with animal ears. He has an injured foot bandaged and is currently sleeping... There's another guy but with sharp looking ears, taking a pill... Anoth--

???: "Ah! You're awake now! It seems you have quite the shock there! You pretty much fainted--"

Koinatsu: "A ghost!?"

Ghost: "Uh yes? You must be new here. I'm one of the staff working in the infirmary. Are you feeling alright?"

Koinatsu: "O-Oh? I'm sorry, I'm just... Wait. Where am I right now?"

• The door flew with a loud sound accompanied by an even louder person. The noise surprised you as well as jolting awake the sleeping beastmen and almost made the other fae choke on his pill.

???: "Are they awake?! Oh! Glad to see, glad to see! Are they sober?"

Ghost: "Seems like it."

• The same man with a top hat and crow mask asked you questions with a tied up monster behind him. He asked if the monster was a familiar of yours but you nodded no. He snapped his fingers and ordered the summoned ghosts to kick Grim out. Now it's your turn with the questions. The man introduced himself as the headmaster of the school you're currently in, Dire Crowley. You also introduced yourself but without the Oiran title for you must be cautious. However, it's nice to finally have a conversation with what's happening.

• You were surprised that he thought you are a new student and awkwardly laughed saying that you are not. You then explained that you are from the Red Light District. This explanation only made Crowley even more dumbfounded for he doesn't know anything about a Red Light District. This got serious to the point of you and Crowley going to the library and searched for an answer, but there was none.

Crowley: "I do not understand. I have a handful of locations where the students come from but not yours. How strange..."

Koinatsu: " Strange indeed."

Crowley: "Are you sure you are not by chance, lying to me?"

Koinatsu: "I am afraid I'm not, sir. You see, I am from Japan.

Crowley: "Japan?"

Koinatsu: "Specifically from the Red Light District."

Crowley: "I see. So this Japan is a country and the Red Light District is where you live? Forgive me if I am delusional but what you described sounds similar to Twisted Wonderland's Ancient Pleasure Quarters...?"

Koinatsu: "I...am a courtesan there, sir."

Crowley: "..."

Koinatsu: "....Um, sir?"

Crowley: "UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES I AM GIVING PERMISSION FOR PROSTITUTION--"

Koinatsu: "No! Goodness, no! I am here by mistake. You see, I am supposed to be wed and tonight is my last night."

Crowley: "What happened? Why are you here then??"

Koinatsu: "I do not know... All I remember is that a woman appeared in my room and... it all went dark... I couldn't remember anything."

Crowley: "Anything? Not even your phone, or wallet, or even a name on a shoe?"

Koinatsu: "Eh? Pardon but what is a ph-phone?"

Crowley: *Sigh* "Great Sevens, something tells me that it's going to be a very long evening..."

• You and Crowley soon give up the search for the day and hope to find an answer tomorrow. Crowley realized that he can't let a homeless person out wandering the streets, he'll let you stay at an unused dormitory as long as you DO NOT commit prostitution and he'll give you odd jobs to never resort to selling your body. You take one look at Ramshackle and you instantly thought the place was unlivable, but you have no choice. It's the best that the headmaster can give you, right?

• When Grim intruded while you search for cleaning tools, you took pity on him and let him stay. You then felt bad about judging him and gave him a sincere apology that gave him a huge ego boost.

Grim: "Fnyahah! Fine! Since you apologized, I'm not gonna burn ya this time."

Koinatsu: "U-umm. Alright?"

• Cue the ghosts disturbing you. You tried shooing them away with a broom and protecting Grim. Grim was surprised. He felt assured that someone was looking out for him for the first time. But that doesn't mean he'll back down. As the fight ended, the headmaster was angered by the sight of Grim still on campus. You pleaded to the headmaster to let Grim stay because he helped you fight the ghosts. And surprisingly Crowley permit it IF you can tame Grim just like you did before.

• The next day, you woke yourself up early, being rather used to your House schedule. Crowley gave you some clothes that you are not familiar wearing.

Grim: "Hey! I still want my tuna!"

Crowley: "You can have your tuna when today's jobs are done! Today, you are cleaning the school entrance. The library can now be accessible to you."

Koinatsu: "Thank you, headmaster."

Crowley: "You are welcome, Koinatsu. Oh! And one more thing. Welcome to Night Raven College."

Y'all remember this post I made talking about how kimono carries visual and cultural language within it and how you can express so so much just by picking the type, the cut, and the patterns? I actually want to extrapolate on this and show how we can actually see that language used during the TWST New Year's event! (Sources will be directly linked as information is introduced.)

For some initial context, while the "plot" of the event is mainly just Sam's New Year Sale, a lot of the visual language, accessories, and cultural references used in the event call back to Shōgatsu or the Japanese New Year festival. This is a time where people WILL dress in traditional kimono and participate in traditional games, dances, eating traditional foods. So seeing the cast in kimono makes a world of sense.

The character I want to talk about in this post specifically is Ortho. His design for the New Year is honestly such a great example of how the different subtleties in kimono all come together to paint a picture, and tell you so much about the person wearing the kimono. Because ultimately, when I look at Ortho's kamishimo? All I see is brilliant foreshadowing about the entire plot of Book 6 and his role in the narrative.

The first thing I want to draw your attention to is the colors. It's the thing we see at a first glance. And while yes, these are the colors of Ignihyde, you might find it interesting to know how this combination translates in the kimono visual language. White, black, and blue are colors associated with and/or signify winter and death. So even if you had no idea that Ortho lived in STYX and was twisted from the film adaptation, Hercules, you could still draw that association from what colors he chose to wear and specifically which color is his base color - white, and which are his accent colors- black and blue.

To further explain, black is the traditional color worn when wearing mourning kimono. And white bleached cotton is traditionally worn as the garments of the deceased. While it may be a bit of a stretch, to me, the choice to use white base garments with black and blue accessories may actually reflect his in-between state. The way that real Ortho is dead, and this Ortho lives in his place is a huge aapect of the narrative behind Idia and Ortho. Grief and the negotiation of self identity, the path that Ortho takes to figuring out who he is despite being a living memory of someone who is dead, is not lost in the visual language of this kamishimo. I think, whether intentional or not, it's something reflected in how the black overlays the white, signifying that mourning and that life after the passing of another.

The next thing I want to actually draw your attention to is the era that the kimono comes from and the style of the kimono. This kimono is actually called a "kamishimo". The Kamishimo was the uniform worn by samurai during the Edo Period shōganate. The combination of the overcoat with the inner shirt, hakama pants, and specific style of adorned obi was quintisential for anyone who lived as a samurai. It signified their role in the government and their social status without the need for explanation, allowing people to adjust their mannerisms accordingly upon first meeting the samurai.

We know from how Idia refers to himself as 拙者 (sessha) and refers to others as -氏 (shi) that he and Ortho are incredibly passionate about the Edo period and very specifically samurai. So it really is a cute nod to that that Ortho would be wearing it. At least... if that's where the symbolism ended.

See the thing that strikes me about his kamishimo is that it's not a "real" kamishimo either. From the silouhette, color scheme, and broad shoulders, we can actually deduce that the kamishimo here is a theatrical kamishimo- worn in Kabuki theater.

Kabuki theater really developed and took off during the Edo period, especially during the Era in which women were forbidden from performing on stages. Many of the jidai-mono (historical plays) performed in Kabuki utilize yakugara (character archetypes) to make it much easier for audiences to watch and appreciate the narrative. These archetypes are often visually defined by uniform or repeating characteristics in their kimono, their makeup, their wigs, and their props as a short hand for audiences to be able to follow.

One such yakugara is called the "jitsuaku". This archetype is specifically defined by an "evil mastermind who plots to overthrow the goverment/feudal lord through rebellion", either due to seeking revenge, wanting power, or by whatever rationale the narrative gives him.

We can see by the depictions what the common color schemes and patterns used in their kamishimo are; the big/baggy silouhette with extremely dramatic, pointed shoulder pads; and the various decorative accessories and how they are placed.

Look familiar?

Ortho's silouhette very clearly harkons back to these specific types of kamishimo, that are considered archetypal of the jitsuaku. In other words, I have reason to suspect that the card designers of TWST are depicting Ortho as a jitsuaku... a evil mastermind who seeks to take over an institution through rebellion...

That sounds an awful lot like the plot of Book 6 and his specific role in the narrative to me.

This is all to say that the visual language of kimono is so so prevalent in his design, and I would extend that argument to every design in the New Year's line up - yes, this includes the most recent inclusion of Jack, Malleus, Jamil, and Floyd. And personally, I think it's genuinely so so cool and incredible that they would choose to add those nuances intentionally into the design in order to tell us everything that we need to know about the character- from social status, to gender and sexuality, to even personal feelings and emotions. It shows how much love is genuinely poured into making these characters feel alive and dynamic, and I think it's genuinely worth taking the time to appreciate.

And if you are still reading this and you are just starting to learn more about the visual art of kimono, then I genuinely hope you find this as encouragement to deep dive and learn more for yourself. Because honestly having that access and knowledge to those cultural elements and traditions truly helps open your eyes to all of the subtleties and messages that the creator wants you to see. And moreover? I think it really helps allow us to better appreciate the characters and the artwork on a much deeper level.

Grimjinka!!!! Or Grim furry? IDK what this is but Grim is my baaabbby. I will do anything for him, I love his brand of tomfoolery. But I am very bad a drawing cats ok. So my compromise is to make him into a furry so I can draw Grim more. This is the ideal solution cause my brain is stupid (i can draw lions but for some reason, house cats is where I tap out). Also, I love dressing him up at a little lad. Very Tom and Jerry inspired.

In other news, Obi is not making it past Chapter 7 unfortunately. I noted in the past that he is my MC for books 1-7. This is what I meant. He’s not dead just in a coma (most likely). But yeah, chapter 7, Obi used the last of his energy and got really injured.

🧧🎊Reviewing New Year Sale Outfits in Twisted Wonderland: 2025 Edition🎍🎉

Last year, I rambled about how much I love playing TWST around New Year, or oshogatsu (お正月), as it is the biggest holiday of the year for my family and for many people living in Japan. The New Year Sale event combines many of my favorite things: tradition, clothing, and the cast of TWST!

So, this year, I am making another post to admire the new, elaborate outfits, and we can admire the details together!

Just as a heads-up: this post features spoilers for the upcoming JP event. If you're looking for my review on the new Rook, Trey, Jade, and Ortho cards for the upcoming English sever event, they are in the post I made last year.

Malleus Draconia (SSR)

I'm so happy that they made a card for Malleus before the Year of the Dragon has officially ended!

This has to be one of my favorite new cards in the whole game. I've always been a huge fan of historical and fantasy dramas. Compared to the other boys, who are dressed in more modern versions of kimono, Malleus has a very antiquated appearance, and it would really make him stand out among others.

His outfit resembles the clothing that men wore in the Heian Period, like in the image below (source here). A lot of Japanese stories regarding yokai and mythical creatures comes from this time period (like Onmyoji, both the practice and the setting of the game), so it suits Malleus very well. I hope to see more historical outfits for Malleus in the future!

Black was usually associated with government officials, while I think princes wore something more colorful. Seeing Malleus wearing a different color, though, is like seeing a tiger without stripes!

I'm really excited to read about his adventures in retail. How will this mythical, revered prince deal with overly-dramatic customers this holiday season??? We'll have to stay tuned!

Overall, I rate this outfit a 12 zodiac animals/10.

Jack Howl (SSR)

I know he's a wolf, but doesn't Jack get cold? He's not even wearing a sweater...

I like the fur jacket (?) he is wearing, though. It reminds me of Sebek's jacket from the New Year Sale event in 2023. I know that Deuce wore something different, but wouldn't it be cool if all the first-years were matching in some way?

The sleeveless turtleneck and the gloves are A LOOK, though. I also like his striped hakama and the decoration in his hair.

Honestly, I would love to have Jack as my coworker. Since his duo is with Floyd, I wonder how he's going to fare...

Anyway, 12/10 for Jack as well.

Floyd Leech (SR)

Last year, I was a really big fan of the outfit they gave Jade, so I am naturally a big fan of Floyd's outfit as well. I've always liked how the artists have managed to distinguish the two brothers while giving them similar outfits. Here, they've swapped the colors of their haori and their kimono.

His kimono-scarf-hat combo, which combines Western and Japanese elements, are very reminiscent of the Taisho Era.

Now I have to imagine Floyd and Jade traveling together as door-to-door salesmen, selling counterfeit kitchenware that explode confetti in your face instead of heating up the pork cutlet you bought at the convenience store.

But, unfortunately, they're such a convincing duo that you might just have to take those appliances anyway...

Rating: 11/10 (like his brother, lol).

Jamil Viper (SR)

Now that the Year of the Dragon is coming to a close, we are ready to welcome in the Year of the Snake.

Part of why I love this event so much is seeking how the artists work with the usual kimono silhouette and alter it to match the vibe of each character, reflecting their tastes and backgrounds. I've seen people wear hoodies with kimono before, and I'm honestly not surprised to see Jamil wearing one himself. The yellow belt from the Scarabia uniforms being used as an obi is also a nice touch.

There's also a lot to be said about how Jamil's face is partly hidden, with long, drapey sleeves, and how his outfit consists of mostly dark colors, while Kalim's outfit in the first New Year event is primarily red with the sleeves rolled up. I'm excited to collect the fanart of them together.

In general, I'm glad that they've given Jamil long sleeves. I've always imagined that it's cold at NRC, and in a desert like at Scarabia, people need to protect their skin from sun exposure, so the Scarabia uniforms have always low-key bothered me a little.

Given that the New Year Sale event has always been a competition between teams, I wonder how the story will play out between the two teams. Between Malleus-Jamil and Jack-Floyd, we have some pretty strong contenders. (Of course, I know Sam is probably going to give both teams the same rewards, but maybe the story will throw a curveball at us again, haha...)

Rating for Jamil: 12/10

Overall, I'm very happy with this lineup of cards, especially with the presence of Malleus and Jamil, since they match the zodiac animals. Since 2026 will be the Year of the Horse, maybe we'll have Riddle, Epel, and/or Silver?

Anyway, I'm glad oshogatsu is coming, because I've had enough of the Year of the Dragon (sorry, Malleus). For all my friends who don't celebrate Year of the Snake until Lunar New Year, hang in there and stay safe! 🧧

“I am aware of your ‘predicament’, Harukawa-san.  However, I was wondering if you could join us this Spring for our annual Send Off.”

“But… this is so sudden, Ambrose-sensei.”

“I know. But I ask you not because we're short on those who can. I ask because I know this is something special you can do.”

“...” she hesitates for a few moments before… “Yes, sir. I'll do it”

~Sage’s Island: Beach Coast~

“Has anyone seen Yuu lately?” Deuce asked. “It’s really weird that we haven't seen her these last few days.”

“And Grim’s been tight-lipped, too,” Jack added.

For the past two weeks, most of the NRC 22  almost saw little to no presence of the aforementioned Prefect. Anytime they would see her after school, Yuu would flee off in a hurry with zero explanation.

At first they chalked it up to her wanting some privacy, but over time it went from normal to worrying. Even Grim had run after her in a rush, too without a word!

Ace turned to Sebek. “Has she told Draconia-senpai where she was going?”

“I AM NOT THE HUMAN’S BABYSITTER! And no, she has not! How dare that woman cause Waka-sama to worry!”

“And the Send Off’s about ta start…” Epel mentioned, worried that their friend might miss out.

The sound of a speaker going off ended their discussion. Crowley stood next to Ambrose on the podium. A few staff members of both schools were seated on their respective sides as well.

The Dire cleared his throat before speaking: “Greetings and good evening, everyone! As I’m sure you all are aware, this evening marks the end of the Spring Arcane Festival. The arrival of Spring mark's new beginnings for all life. New flowers bloom freely from the snow, animals waking up once more from hibernation,” he pauses for a moment, taking on a serious tone. “And of course, us parting from those who were left behind from the past year.”

“And as such a case, here on Sage’s Island, we wish to help those pass on, with the annual Send Off.” He steps away, begrudgingly allowing Ambrose to continue.

“For many of us here, the Send Off is a time where we ensure guidance to those who left us. Whether sickness, old age, many other tragedies; it does not change the fact that sometimes these souls need help moving on less they become enraged Phantoms and harm others. Which brings us to today,” He casts a spell that summons a portal. Out from the portal gate came students donned in robes that look like they came from the Far East.

Among the march of students, one stood out from the rest.

“Hey. Isn’t that…”

“I-I think so…”

There in the middle of the group heading to the beach, was Yuu!

She was wearing what looked to be the same robe as the others, but more fitted towards her. A white sleeveless top with two detached, but still complementing in a way, sleeves; the tips of the sleeves fading into a gradient pink. A golden yellow obi wrapped around her petite frame, and a long violet purple skirt to match. In her hand was a meticulous staff no doubt made for the occasion.

“EEEEEEEEEHHHHHHHHH??! WHAT IS SHE DOING OVER THERE?!”

“Gentlemen!!!” Ambrose pointedly looked at the students who interrupted him. “Please lower your voices. You can shout after the Sending.”

The First years in question(Adeuce) muttered a ‘sorry’ before looking back at their friend.

“Now where was I? Oh yes! For this occasion, we have chosen one student to help us send the spirits to the beyond.” he continued. “Ms. Yuu Harukawa, are you ready?”

Said person nodded, determination written all over her face. With a small blessing from one of the other students beside her, Yuu walked forward onto the ocean’s surface. She kept walking until she was in the middle of the floating tombs in the water.

A deep breath in… deep breath out…

From the sound of the first drum, Yuu began to dance. She slowly spinned her body around, weaving and swaying like the ocean waves. She twirled, staff in hand; waving it about in the air as if it was a mage wand.

She looked beautiful… even while performing this rite… She looked beautiful.

As Yuu danced, small orbs of light began to sprout from the tombs. The orbs were pieces of those who passed away, slowly ascending away from the land of the living.

As they reached the climax of the Send Off, the torches that brought light to the festivities changed from red(RSA) and green(NRC) to a fierce blue. In addition, a pillar of water began to lift Yuu into the air a bit. Her dance became more intense spiritually than physically.

Her final pose of bringing her staff in her embrace marked the end of the ceremony. The pillar lowered back to the surface, allowing her to walk back to the shoreline safely.

A somber feeling settled onto the crowd with a few of the robed students complimenting Yuu for her hard work.

Someone from the crowd scurried over to Yuu as he grew impatient to see her. “Yuu. That was a fancy dance you did. Told ya you had it!”

The Prefect laughed “Funny. If I remember correctly, you thought it was boring.”

“I don't remember saying that,” Grim said in denial.

The sound of footsteps and people getting shoved caught Yuu and the others' attention. And out of the crowd came the Heartslabyul duo, panting after the rush to see her.

Ace looked to his friend, wanting answers. “Yuu, why didn't you tell us you were performing?”

She answered back: “I wanted to keep it a secret.”

“But, you could've told us. We wouldn’t tell the others.” Deuce said. “If we knew the Headmage was gonna force you-”

“Actually it wasn't Headmage Crowley.”

“Huh?”

“Ambrose-sensei asked me if I wanted to volunteer. ”

The news shocked the duo. “Why though?”

“Because I knew she had the compassion to ensure the departed were sent safely.” Behind them, said Headmages appeared behind them. “I had a feeling that out of all the possible candidates from NRC, she showed the most passion to carry it without fail.” He smiled at the girl.

“Of course, Crowley was trying to deny my requests-”

“I assure you I was not.” The crow interjected. Sure you weren't, sir.

“However I- as well as the rest of Sage’s Island- are eternally grateful for her and everyone else who participated this year.”

Yuu bowed to the older gentleman. “It's the least I can do, sir.”

(I saw second year Cloche and my heart dropped. You took the horror of her curse and cranked it to a 10. Someone please give Cloche hugs (only if she’s ok with that). Why are you so good at playing with my heart?! The angst…)

Uwahhh thank you—! Angst is my forte <3 I wasn’t expecting this interaction at all and it is such an honour ;; The curse of obedience is indeed a terrifying one, especially because it rides on the whims of others.

Tbh, I feel like the moment Cloche’ emotional exhaustion wears off, she would absolutely take revenge. For now, the bare minimum is to stay alive.
