FaraGiving: Bridging Knowledge and Culture with the Mamanwa Tribe

On Saturday, March 29, 2025, the UCSP Outreach Program 2025 took us on an unforgettable journey to the heart of the Mamanwa community in Mat-i, Surigao City. The outreach program was not just a one-day event, but a meaningful exchange of culture, ideas, and human connection. It was a day filled with learning, bonding, and the sharing of stories that would remain with us for a long time. We were not only participants in the outreach but also learners in a community that valued unity, tradition, and the preservation of their heritage.
The morning of the event began with a warm welcome from the Mamanwa people. Their hospitality was evident as we entered their village, greeted by smiling faces eager to share their stories with us. We had the privilege of engaging in storytelling sessions, where the elders shared the rich history of the Mamanwa tribe, their traditions, and the importance of their connection to nature. We learned about the tribe’s sustainable way of life, how they gather resources from the land in a respectful and balanced way, and how they pass down their knowledge through generations. This interaction provided us with a deep appreciation for their culture and the significance of preserving such traditions in the modern world.

One of the highlights of the day was participating in traditional Mamanwa games. These games were not only fun but also carried cultural significance. They served as a reminder of the tribe’s values of cooperation, respect, and community spirit. Each game was an opportunity for us to connect with the Mamanwa people in a playful yet meaningful way. The energy of the community was infectious, and we found ourselves laughing, competing, and celebrating the sense of togetherness that these games fostered. The games also helped us to understand how cultural traditions can be both a means of entertainment and a way to strengthen bonds within a community.
As the day unfolded, we participated in a heartfelt gift-giving ceremony. Despite having limited resources, the Mamanwa community shared their traditional meals with us, which was a humbling and touching gesture. We were introduced to staple foods such as kamote (sweet potatoes), bulad (dried fish), ginamos (fermented fish), and kalibre (cassava). These meals were more than just sustenance; they represented the generosity and unity of the Mamanwa people. The act of sharing food was a testament to their values of mutual support and the importance they place on community.

The outreach experience was not only about providing aid and donations but also about learning from the Mamanwa people. As we interacted with the community, it became clear that we were also receiving invaluable lessons. The resilience, kindness, and deep sense of connection the Mamanwa people have to each other and their land left a lasting impact on us. We came to give, but we left with so much more—wisdom, humility, and a profound respect for their way of life.
A special shout-out goes to Cacay Agrivet Store for generously donating rice, which became an essential part of our outreach efforts. We are also truly grateful to our patrons—Ms. Jenny Calado, for providing the refreshments and bread that fueled both the volunteers and the community, and Mr. Al Vincent Go, for his monetary donation that helped make this initiative possible. Your kindness and support played a big role in the success of our activity, and we deeply appreciate your contributions.

A special thank you goes to Ma'am Marie Christy Arcamo, whose support was instrumental in making this outreach a reality. Her dedication, organization, and commitment to the cause ensured that everything went smoothly and that the event was a success. We are incredibly grateful for her leadership and the vision she brought to the program.

The success of the outreach was not just in the tangible donations or the activities we participated in, but in the connections that were formed. We made friendships, learned new perspectives, and experienced the power of community in a way that we had never felt before. These connections have inspired us to continue our journey of cultural appreciation, mutual respect, and meaningful change.
This outreach also highlighted the importance of community-driven efforts. The Mamanwa tribe showed us that, despite challenges, they remain united, strong, and resilient. Their way of life teaches us valuable lessons about the importance of preserving traditions, fostering respect for nature, and supporting one another. These lessons will continue to shape our work in future outreach programs and in the communities we serve.
As we reflect on the day, it’s clear that the relationships formed during this outreach go beyond one event. The bonds created during our time with the Mamanwa tribe will continue to grow, and the lessons we learned will stay with us. We are committed to strengthening the connections we have made and continuing to support communities like the Mamanwa tribe, where cultural traditions and unity are cherished.

We are looking forward to future outreach programs and the continued opportunity to engage with communities. Our goal is to promote cultural exchange, support communities in their growth, and inspire meaningful change through education, sharing, and cooperation. This event may have ended, but the lessons learned, the memories created, and the friendships formed will remain forever.
Budget Overview
To ensure the smooth running of the event, the UCSP Outreach Program 2025 maintained a clear and transparent budget. The funds were allocated to transportation, supplies for games and activities, food and meals for both the participants and the Mamanwa community, as well as materials for gift-giving. We were able to raise the necessary funds through donations, sponsorships, and participant contributions. We are incredibly grateful to all who supported us in making this event possible.

Attendance
The outreach event saw the participation of over 69 individuals, including members of the UCSCP Outreach Program, volunteers, and members of the Mamanwa community. Our team consisted of 38 students and 2 faculty members who worked tirelessly to ensure the event's success. The Mamanwa community, with their elders, youth, and families, joined in to create an atmosphere of collaboration and unity. The participation of everyone involved helped turn the outreach into a day that will be remembered for years to come.

Individual Reflections
Reflecting on the day, each of us was deeply touched by the generosity and warmth of the Mamanwa people. For many participants, this experience marked their first interaction with an indigenous community. It was an eye-opening opportunity that allowed us to view the world from a broader and more human perspective. To read the personal insights and takeaways from each participant, please refer to the attached PDF document containing the individual reflections of the students.

En mis antiguos blogs hacía post titulados "Autosugestión I, II, III, etc.".
