I'm not completely happy with the spec bio i did honestly. I didnt even get to the possibilities of the spots/scales! (Probably because I cant decide if theyre spots or scales LOL) anyway.. More science and references under the read more (it's long):

Melanin:

I used the general term 'melanin' for color determination since going into variants of melanin (eumelanin, etc) was beyond the scope of my purposes.

Similar to humans, concentration of melanin determines skin color and has protective properties against UV. [1] Thus, as hearthians evolved to become more land-based and had increased exposure to the sun there was selective pressure for higher melanin concentrations. (making blue the predominant color variation in present day) In the past, without this selective pressure, I imagine the more purple variant would have been more common (at least than it is now). It's possible that those who've maintained this trait have larger/more spots/scales to counteract the loss of UV protection? (Partially why I chose Porphy- not just because I love them)

Note: since hearthian melanin is blue in tone, the name "melanin" would not be appropriate as it has the wrong root. I also considered determining a different name to be beyond the scope of my purposes. Unfortunately, I don't know enough about chemistry to change the structure of melanin to reflect blue instead of brown/black.

Blood:

This came about because I could not decide on a blood color for hearthians. Then! I discovered the Green Tree Skink (Prasinohaema virens). These nifty guys are the inspiration for green blood variants for hearthians! [2, 3] Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be much research on the little guy. But basically, the process making them green is the same as I described.

Oh, and I hear what you're saying, "Ancient, isn't an arrest in such an important liver enzyme cause for medical concern?" Probably! But not in a way I could readily predict beyond most likely a propensity for kidney issues, odd blood osmolarity, and trouble detecting liver damage/disease. In normal humans a build up of biliverdin is together with a build up of bilirubin (Jaundice baby!). However, a build up of ONLY biliverdin... *shrugs* Again, they need more research on these dang lizards man. I didn't notice anything about it being particularly toxic [4] (didn't search very hard) and since it's water-soluble (vs the bilirubin fat-soluble) (im NOT going into conjugated vs unconjugated bili rn) kidney excretion should work fine.

Anyway, rule of cool wins out every time so green blood doesn't do more harm (and could maybe even be protective in certain ways- see ref 4). I WAS gonna rag on about malaria protection but i need to stop, seriously. (I was ALSO gonna talk about albinism but SERIOUSLY I NEED TO STOP)
