HOW CLOSE ARE WE TO SPACE COLONIZATION??
Blog#342
Saturday, October 21st, 2023
Welcome back,
There's a huge difference between sending humans to Mars and colonizing worlds outside our solar system.
The answers to these questions depend heavily on which planet you're talking about. For Mars, decades isn't necessarily an unrealistic time frame. Serkan Saydam, deputy director of the Australian Centre for Space Engineering Research and a professor at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, said human colonization of Mars is possible within decades.

"I believe by 2050 we will have a human colony on Mars," Saydam told Live Science.
Saydam is a mining engineer who specializes in researching future mining. The first major step in establishing a successful Mars colony will be water, and that can be extracted from ice and/or hydrated minerals, according to Saydam. He thinks water will then facilitate agriculture and the ability to grow food on Mars, like in the 2015 movie "The Martian," while hydrogen from the ice and minerals could also be used as an energy source for rocket propellant.

But there isn't a scientific consensus on Mars colonization by 2050, and other scientists have offered less optimistic opinions. Louis Friedman, an astronautics engineer and co-founder of the nonprofit The Planetary Society, suggested to Gizmodo in 2019 that Mars colonization was unlikely for the foreseeable future, while Rachael Seidler, a neuroscientist at the University of Florida who has worked with NASA astronauts, told Gizmodo that people like to be optimistic about colonizing Mars, but it sounded "a bit pie-in-the-sky."

Humanity will, however, likely reach Mars within decades. China plans to start sending human crews to Mars in 2033, while NASA aims to send astronauts there by the late 2030s or early 2040s. Once humans get there, the next step could be to build a colony.

Colonization implies some degree of self-sufficiency but not necessarily complete independence from Earth. Saydam compares Mars with a remote island where you'd still need to import things occasionally.
"Most of the equipment and tools will be sent from Earth," Saydam said. "I don't think you can manufacture a truck on the Mars surface."

Mars would need to produce something for a long-term colony to be financially viable. Space tourism is one option, but Saydam pointed to mineral extraction as key to colonization success.
For example, space mining on nearby asteroids for valuable materials such as platinum could create new space economies, thereby driving further investment and exploration.

The Scottish Suffragette and campaigner Arabella Scott was born on May 7th 1886 in Dunoon.
Arabella’s mother was a teacher and her father served as a captain in the army for more than 25 years, she attended The University of Edinburgh and gained a Master of Arts degree and went on to become a schoolteacher.
Both Arabella and her sister Muriel were advocates for women’s suffrage and were active speakers in Scotland for the cause and in 1909, were both arrested on the charge of obstruction in London after they tried to hand a petition to the British Prime Minister Asquith. They served 21 days at H M Prison Holloway.
Arabella was arrested and released several times over the following years, under the Cat and Mouse Act, and Act put into place so that suffragettes could not kill themselves in prison due to hunger strikes, instead when they became too weak they were released and then re-arrested at a later time.
In May 1913 Arabella was arrested with three other women and one man after an unsuccessful attempt to burn down Kelso Racecourse. She was sentenced to nine months imprisonment – as was the man whose crime was to drive them there. Janie Allen a suffragette journalist, bitterly compared his sentence with those who assaulted children and often got less than that.
She went on hunger strike and was released under the Cat and Mouse Act. Unlike others who went to ground once they were released Arabella stayed public. She had promised her employers, Leith School Board, that she would not take part in any more militant activity so she was kept on their list. She was arrested, went on hunger strike released and disappeared for 2 months. She was ‘found’ on a WSPU protest and returned to jail. She went on hunger strike again and was released again..
It took many months to ‘find’ her again, this time working as a WSPU organiser in Brighton. She was arrested and forcibly brought back to Edinburgh and jail. Again the same scenario ensued and she took the train to London before she was due back. She was ‘found’ accidentally while the house she was staying in was being searched for someone else. So, once again she was forcibly brought back but this time sent to Perth prison to be force fed and was "the longest force-fed prisoner in Scotland” for 5 weeks, a visible legacy of this remained in her chipped teeth. These were her battle scars, sustained when she tried to resist being force fed, her mouth held open and a mixture of eggs flour and milk were poured down her throat through a tube attached to a funnel, this happened twice a day every day during her incarceration
Outside the prison gates, 3,000 people kept a vigil, although they were not even told what exactly was going in inside.
She emerged feeling more militant than ever.
All her life Arabella Scott upheld a passionate commitment to women’s rights, under her married name Colville-Reeves emigrated to Australia.
She died on 27 August 1980, and her memorial is in the Palmdale Lawn Cemetery on the Central Coast of New South Wales.
Isn’t it atrocious what society inflicted on these women, to me it amounts to torture as the third photo illustrates.

again, cannot b fucked with something big so here we go pt 2 !!!!
born in redfern, sydney. grew up in the suburbs with his parents ( a tradesman + an english teacher ) + his older sister ( an insufferable know - it - all, but his best friend regardless ). there’s nothing remarkable to note about his childhood — he was a good kid, half - decent at school once he was diagnosed with adhd + medicated for it. very athletics - focused, despite a natural aptitude towards humanities - based subjects that he’ll come to fall in love with when he’s a little older. class clown but not in an obstructive way ; everyone’s best friend, blessed with an irresistible charm.
he’s a little shit as a teenager, + his sister spends entirely too much of her time trying to corral him into being normal — to no avail. weekends are spent with his friends, jumping the turnstiles on the train + flirting his way out of any fines, charming his way into discounts on drinks that he shouldn’t be buying, sneaking into concerts + calling jacinta to pick him up when he’s blackout drunk. ( quite frankly, it’s amazing that their relationship is as solid as it is ; he refers to her as his rock, the anchor that steadies him when he’s bobbing through waves, unbuoyed + unbothered by what crashes over him sheerly because he knows she’s there. she simply rolls her eyes + affects an annoyed tone when she refers to her kid brother, eternal dipshit. )
high school is no challenge for him, especially when he bothers to apply himself. ends up as school captain, captain of their afl team + the editor of the school paper. he shouldn’t be able to juggle it all as well as he does, but it just sort of … happens. at the same time, he’s fallen head over heels in love — childhood sweetheart, drifted away + turned adolescent devotion. when he passes his driving test, his first solo drive is in his mum’s holden commodore in the middle of the night, to go see his girlfriend. ( side note: loses his virginity that night. couldn’t wipe the golden glow off of his face, even when his mum was giving him the third degree about fucking off with the car. ) when they graduated, he was privately convinced he was going to marry her ; dreams of neat fences + the smell of freshly - mown grass, kids giggling in the pool + his arms around her shoulders, chin buried in the mess of her hair.
what happens: they make a decision. he’ll go to the university of new south wales for journalism, she’ll go to monash for medicine, they’ll see each other where they can. love professed in bedrooms + the backs of cars alike, kisses pressed to the sweaty tangle of her fingers through his. ( we can do this, right ? long distance ? couldn’t imagine anyone i’d rather do it with, babe. ) he browses jewellers for three years, sets his eyes on an eye - watering diamond + starts a little fund. casual jobs worked, childhood bedroom still inhabited so he doesn’t have to pay rent. facetime calls + trips to melbourne where he can, shamelessly charming her roommates so they go out on the town + leave them alone for the night. what happens: they’re twenty - two, + he notices a hickey on her neck. it’s faded, but it’s there. it opens up a world of observances that he’d had his blinders on to: an unfamiliar shirt draped over the back of a chair, the rushed goodbyes on phone calls, the distance that had grown, ivy + rust through telephone lines. “what’s that? on your neck? don’t lie to me, please.” he’s a little choked - up when he asks, + she has the dignity not to lie. “i’ve, um. fuck, milo, this is so hard. i love you, i always will. but i’ve m-” ( your call has been disconnected. )
diamond ring fund be damned. shattered pieces of his good, broken heart lie on the floor. gold - limned dreams are burst like bubbles, + in a moment of desperation, he throws a dart at a map. the first one misses, lodges itself in a polaroid of them together, his mouth pressed to hers. ( you said forever and i almost bought it / i miss fighting in your old apartment / breakin’ dishes when you’re disappointed / i still love you, i promise / nothing happened in the way i wanted / every corner of this house is haunted. ) the second one is more expertly aimed, lodges itself in some bumfuck town in rhode island. three hours later, he’s formed a plan.
kilmer’s cove is nothing like sydney, + he falls in love with it for exactly that reason. he’s worlds away from his broken heart + the life he thought he wanted — what he has now is a degree that he doesn’t know what the fuck to do with, an apartment with a collection of roommates that he thinks might be the best + worst people he’s ever met. jacinta keeps asking him when he’s getting over his tantrum + coming home. ( not anytime soon, jack. sorry. )

Get to know my characters
Hi, I'm still here! If you've ever wanted to know what kinds of characters I write here's a brief rundown of the main characters from my novels and my current works in progress.
Willow – The protagonist of It’s All Magic to Me, Willow is a twenty-something balance family and friends along with university studies. Coming from a mixed-race background, predominantly Scottish and Malaysian with some other unmentioned nationalities thrown in, Willow is closely bonded with her family particularly to her grandfather who lives with them. Asexual and Aromantic, Willow has no interest in dating but adores spending time with her two best friends – Miri and Sam. At university she is most of the way through a Bachelor of Arts with a History major and is considering further study. Her hobbies involve nail art, she has over thirty shades of nail polish in her cupboard, and training her newfound magic abilities.
Sphynx – In lieu of a MMC, It’s All Magic to Me has Sphynx. Full name Synphineuous Abydian. A copper coloured Abyssinian cat whose been around for a few hundred years. He’d retired as a familiar up until he discovered Willow but was more than happy to pounce back into the role. Patient, kind, fiercely protective, and a little stubborn. Sphynx enjoys teaching magic and talking about his previous owners, he also loves sleeping in laundry hampers and hiding under the bed.
Millicent ‘Milly’- NPC energy, main character of Customerpocalypse. A bit of a pessimist, stuck working in customer service, Milly is a disillusioned twenty-something before the apocalypse hits. After the apocalypse Milly bounces between self-loathing and general boredom with how despite a world changing event, she’s wound up in a customer service position again. She does not appreciate her boss’ secret hiding places, the mutated creatures of the wasteland, or the general weird nonsensicalness of the survivortopolis. What she does like is rabbits, (Hunky) Crossbow Larry, and her weirdo friends/former co-workers.
Selby – One of the three MCs of the Venatores de Mythos trilogy. Hailing from Darwin, Australia, Selby comes from a mixed racial background but predominantly gives off white girl vibes. Eighteen and studying an undergraduate medical degree at Bond University when Book 1 starts. Upon joining the Venatores de Mythos organisation she is assigned to Team Excalibur. Selby has been practicing Muay Thai since she was a child and is a proficient fighter, she bonds quickly with her teammates and with Shahrazad and Roque (the other MCs).
Shahrazad – Lowkey my favourite of the Venatores de Mythos trilogy’s three MCs. Born in Marrakesh to a French father and Arab mother, Shahrazad is multilingual fluent in both her parents’ languages as well as English. Her family moved to New South Wales, Australia during her early teens. Twenty-two years old and studying Stage Management at NIDA, when book 1 starts Shahrazad is uncertain of the path her life is following searching for a sign. Eager to reembrace her French heritage, having had it completely shut off to her after her father’s death some years ago, Shahrazad wholeheartedly embraces joining the Venatores de Mythos. She’s also a lesbian and she gets a happy, positive, romance subplot throughout the series.
Roque – Venatores de Mythos trilogy’s MMC! Roque is a twenty-year-old, engineering student at the university of Buenos Aires when book 1 starts. Fascinated by machines, architecture, and history. Roque is extremely close with his family, constantly trying to find ways to support his mother and younger siblings. He takes the opportunity offered by the Venatores de Mythos in honour of his deceased uncle, and because it allows him to financial support his family. Over time he comes to consider Selby and Shahrazad as his second family.
Ginny – FMC for Chimera. Ginny is the Chimera in question, a witch with various mythical creatures interspersed in her genetic and cultural heritage. Twenty-something years old and in hiding from creature specialists who want to dissect her and her family, Ginny struggles with her newfound lack of freedom desperately longing to return to the time before the incident. Fiercely protective and loving towards her family, Ginny has the gift to see death omens.
Adrian – MMC for Chimera. An only child, Adrian is the adopted son of creature specialist Caspian. With innate magic, Adrian wants to learn how to control his power and become a fully recognised warlock or at the very least he’d like to have a little freedom in his life. Ever since he was a child he’s been under the constant watch of Charity, a ghoul contractually bound to his father’s service. If the only way to obtain a modicum of freedom is to prove to his father that he has what it takes to be a creature specialist then that’s what he’ll do.

Is Australia the Right Place to Study for Indian Students?
Studying abroad is a significant decision for any student, particularly for Indian students seeking to broaden their academic and professional horizons. Among the top destinations for higher education, Australia stands out as a favorite due to its world-class universities, vibrant multicultural environment, and excellent post-study opportunities. But is Australia truly the right place for Indian students to study?
In this detailed blog, we explore why Australia continues to be a top choice, examining its academic strengths, student-friendly policies, lifestyle benefits, and the career opportunities it offers to international students from India.
Why is Australia a Top Study Destination for Indian Students?
1. World-Renowned Universities Australia is home to seven universities ranked in the world’s top 100 according to the QS World University Rankings 2025, including: ● The University of Melbourne ● The University of Sydney ● The University of Queensland ● Australian National University (ANU) ● University of New South Wales (UNSW)
These institutions are known for their research excellence, modern campuses, and high graduate employability.
2.Globally Recognized Degrees An Australian degree holds global recognition across industries, making it easier for Indian students to secure jobs not just in Australia, but also in countries like the UK, USA, Canada, and India. Australian universities focus on practical learning, skill development, and innovative research, which gives Indian students a strong competitive edge.
3.Diverse Course Options From engineering and medicine to data science, AI, nursing, hospitality, and media, Australia offers a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs to suit every academic interest and career path. Specialized programs like Master's in Cybersecurity, an MBA, an MS in IT, and Public Health are especially popular among Indian students.
Indian Student Community in Australia
According to the Australian Department of Education, there are over 100,000 Indian students currently enrolled in various Australian institutions. This strong presence has led to the development of an extensive Indian community, including cultural clubs, Indian restaurants, and temples, making it easier for students to feel at home.
Cities like Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, and Adelaide have large Indian populations and student-friendly facilities.
Supportive Education System
1. Student-Centric Teaching Methods Australian universities emphasize critical thinking, problem-solving, and collaborative learning. Students are encouraged to participate in discussions, research, and internships, which enhance their academic and professional development.
2. Academic Support Services International students, including those from India, receive support in the form of:
● Language and writing workshops ● Study skill tutorials ● Mental health and well-being services Dedicated international student advisors
Affordable Education & Scholarships
While tuition in Australia can range from AUD 20,000 to AUD 50,000 per year, several universities and the Australian government offer generous scholarships for Indian students. Some prominent scholarship programs include:
● Australia Awards Scholarships ● Destination Australia Scholarships ● University-Specific Scholarships (e.g., Deakin India Scholarships, UNSW Future of Change Scholarship)
These financial aids can cover up to 100% of tuition fees, living costs, and even travel expenses.
Post-Study Work Visa (PSWV) Opportunities
One of the biggest advantages for Indian students in Australia is the Post-Study Work Visa (subclass 485). This visa allows international graduates to stay and work in Australia for 2 to 6 years, depending on: ● Level of qualification ● Location of study ● Skill shortages
For instance:
● Bachelor’s graduates: 2–4 years ● Master’s graduates: 3–5 years ● PhD graduates: 4–6 years
This allows Indian students to gain valuable international work experience and even apply for Permanent Residency (PR) if eligible.
Part-Time Work for Indian Students
International students on a valid student visa can work up to 48 hours per fortnight during the semester and full-time during semester breaks. This allows Indian students to:
● Earn extra income ● Gain local work experience ● Improve soft skills ● Build a professional network
Popular part-time jobs include positions in retail, hospitality, administration, and delivery services.
High Quality of Life & Safety
Australia is consistently ranked among the safest and most liveable countries in the world. With cities like Melbourne, Sydney, and Perth known for their cleanliness, efficient public transport, and recreational options, Indian students find it easy to adapt and thrive.
Key Benefits Include: ● Excellent healthcare system ● Clean environment ● Low crime rates ● Warm and welcoming local community
Multicultural and Inclusive Society
Australia is a melting pot of cultures, and Indian students are warmly welcomed. Celebrations like Diwali, Holi, and Navratri are organized on many university campuses and public spaces.
This diversity helps Indian students feel included and also provides a broader cultural perspective.
Post-Arrival Support & Accommodation Options
Most Australian universities offer airport pickup services, temporary accommodation, and orientation programs to help international students settle in. Indian students can choose from: ● On-campus housing ● Homestays ● Private rentals ● Shared apartments
Major cities also have Indian grocery stores and restaurants, making daily life more convenient and comfortable
High Graduate Employability
Australian universities focus heavily on industry engagement. Many programs offer internships, co-op programs, or project-based learning to give students real-world exposure. Top employers in Australia actively recruit graduates from leading universities.
Sectors in high demand include: ● Information Technology ● Healthcare ● Engineering ● Accounting ● Construction ● Data Analytics
Pathway to Permanent Residency (PR)
Many Indian students choose Australia because of the strong migration pathways post-graduation. Programs like the General Skilled Migration (GSM) and Regional Migration Schemes allow students to apply for PR based on: ● Points system ● Skilled occupation list ● English proficiency ● Work experience
This makes Australia not just a place to study—but also to live and build a future.
Challenges Indian Students Might Face
Despite the many positives, it’s important to consider potential challenges: ● Higher cost of living in cities like Sydney and Melbourne ● Cultural adjustment and homesickness ● Visa application complexities (need expert guidance) ● Competitive job market in certain fields
However, with proper planning, student counseling, and support, these can be effectively managed.

Who Is Qualified to Conduct a Cadastral Survey in Australia?
A cadastral survey plays a critical role in defining legal property boundaries. These surveys involve the precise measurement and documentation of land parcels, ensuring clarity for land ownership, development, and taxation purposes. In Australia, cadastral surveys are regulated by a combination of state and territory legislation, and they are fundamental to the country's land administration system.
The Importance of Cadastral Surveys in Land Ownership
The accuracy and legal validity of a cadastral survey are essential for protecting property rights. Whether it’s for buying, selling, subdividing land, or resolving disputes, a legally recognized survey ensures that the boundaries are clear and enforceable. This process not only safeguards individual interests but also supports urban planning, infrastructure development, and environmental management.
Who Can Conduct a Cadastral Survey in Australia?
In Australia, only licensed or registered land surveyors are legally permitted to perform a cadastral survey. Each state and territory has its own licensing board or authority responsible for the accreditation and regulation of these professionals.
Here is an overview of the qualifications and requirements common across jurisdictions:
1. Professional Accreditation
To conduct a cadastral survey, a person must hold a recognized qualification in surveying—typically a university degree in surveying or spatial science. This academic training includes a strong foundation in geodesy, cartography, land law, and measurement technologies.
2. Registration with a Surveyors’ Board
After completing the academic requirements, aspiring cadastral surveyors must gain practical experience under the supervision of a licensed surveyor. Once sufficient experience is demonstrated, they can apply for registration with the relevant Surveyors' Board in their jurisdiction. This board assesses competence through examinations and practical assessments.
3. Compliance with Legislative Standards
Registered surveyors are required to conduct cadastral surveys in accordance with strict legal and technical standards. These standards are established by state and territory laws, such as the Surveying and Spatial Information Act (NSW), Surveyors Act (Victoria), and similar legislation across Australia.
Why Licensing Matters
The legal framework surrounding cadastral surveys ensures that only qualified professionals can certify boundary data. Licensed surveyors are held accountable for their work, reducing the risk of boundary disputes and protecting the integrity of the property system. Unauthorized individuals conducting cadastral surveys may face legal penalties, and their work is not recognized in legal contexts.
Regulatory Authorities in Each Jurisdiction
Each Australian state and territory has a designated authority responsible for licensing and regulating surveyors:
New South Wales – Board of Surveying and Spatial Information (BOSSI)
Victoria – Surveyors Registration Board of Victoria
Queensland – Surveyors Board of Queensland
Western Australia – Land Surveyors Licensing Board
South Australia – Surveyors Board of South Australia
Tasmania – Land Surveyors Accreditation Board
Northern Territory – Surveyors Board of the Northern Territory
Australian Capital Territory – Surveyor-General’s Office
These authorities oversee continuing professional development and ensure that licensed surveyors maintain high standards throughout their careers.
Risks of Using Unqualified Individuals
Engaging someone who is not licensed to perform a cadastral survey can lead to significant legal and financial consequences. Mistakes in boundary determination may result in:
Legal disputes with neighbours
Rejection of subdivision plans by local councils
Fines and enforcement action
Inaccurate titles and property descriptions
Only a properly licensed surveyor has the legal authority to lodge survey plans with land title offices and ensure they are accepted as part of the official land records.
Conclusion
A cadastral survey is a critical legal document in the Australian property system, and its preparation must be entrusted to a qualified professional. Only a licensed land surveyor has the training, registration, and legal standing to carry out this work. Before engaging a surveyor, it is essential to verify their credentials with the appropriate regulatory body in your state or territory.
Ensuring that a cadastral survey is performed by a qualified professional not only guarantees legal compliance but also protects the interests of all parties involved in land ownership and development.

July 23rd 1773 saw the birth of Thomas Makdougall Brisbane near Largs.
Decribed as a tall, handsome and benevolent-looking, sincerely religious, perfectly impartial, rational and far-seeing, an intellectual and scientific man and a patron of science..
I like this man's gib, and at a time when most notable people from this era are accused of historical crimes against the indigenous people of Australia and the likes, Sir Thomas seems to be a man with an unblemished character.
Brisbane was born at Brisbane House in Noddsdale, near Largs in Ayrshire, Scotland, the son of Sir Thomas Brisbane and his wife Eleanora (née Bruce).
Having studied mathematics and astronomy at the University of Edinburgh, Sir Thomas joined the British Army in 1789, enjoying a distinguished career in Flanders, the West Indies, Spain and North America. Indeed, such was the impression he made that it was the Duke of Wellington himself who made the recommendation that Sir Thomas serve in Australia in 1821.
As Governor of New South Wales – a post he held until 1825 – he immediately began working on a series of reforms to tackle the problems of a rapidly expanding colony. This included improvements to the land grants system, currency reform, and experiments in growing tobacco, cotton, coffee and flax.
His Edinburgh studies served Sir Thomas well. His keen interest in science led him to become the first President of the Philosophical Society of Australasia (now the Royal Society of New South Wales) and he established the colony’s first agricultural training college, also assuming the role of first patron of the New South Wales Agricultural Society.
It was during this period that the famous city that now bears his name was established, a fact that is entwined in the history of the transportation of convicts to the area from Britain.
Sir Thomas was looking for a new site to house repeat offenders and was shown an area around a large river at Moreton Bay. By 1824, convicts had moved in and both the river and the area became known as Brisbane. By 1839 it had become open to free settlement.
Beyond his military and civil service, Sir Thomas’s great love was for astronomy, an expertise he had honed at the University of Edinburgh. The observatory he had constructed at his first home in Australia recorded the first detailed observations of southern hemisphere stars from the continent and was where Enke’s comet was discovered in 1822. Remnants of Sir Thomas’s books and equipment are still held in the Sydney Observatory.
After returning to Scotland, he was elected President of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 1832, succeeding Sir Walter Scott, and was created a baronet in 1836. While continuing his astronomical research, he received honorary degrees from both Oxford and Cambridge universities, and was President of the British Association for the Advancement of Science.
He regarded his greatest achievements, however, as those that benefited his own community. He established the Largs Brisbane Academy to give local children the opportunity of a better education, and made provision for a new sewage system in the town to clear the streets of dirty water. This effectively reduced the prevalence of deadly diseases in the area, including the scourges of cholera and typhoid. He is remembered in the town today in the names of Brisbane Glen, Brisbane House and the Thomas Makdougall Brisbane Bridge.
On his death in 1860, Sir Thomas was rightly lauded: dedicated military leader, effective governor and celebrated astronomer. His memorial can be seen today in the grounds of the kirk in his hometown of Largs.
With no fewer than 10 locations named in honour of Sir Thomas – including one of the Moon’s craters and the much-loved Australian city – his influence during his relatively short tenure as Governor is clear, and as I pointed out at the start ofthis post, a man of great character.
