Hello, library personnel -
A quick programming note. The January book club picks have been finalized and will be as follows:
Nonfiction: Long Live the Tribe of Fatherless Girls, by T Kira Madden
Fiction: A Dog’s Existential Ennui, by W. Bruce Cameron
Short Fiction: Sabrina & Corina: Stories, by Kali Fajardo-Anstine
Teen: Untitled Stone Tablet, creator unknown
Originally January’s teen book club read was intended to be Volume One of G. Willow Wilson’s Ms. Marvel, but there has been a last minute petition to change this by some of the intrepid young explorers who have been excavating the cavern beneath the Audio-Visual Department.
“Yeah, I guess they found some kind of stone tablet down there covered in alchemical symbols, and they’re really excited about translating it,” says Alaisha Farsi, the newly appointed Head Teen Librarian. “Now I’m not going to lie, I was really excited about Ms. Marvel. But things have been really hectic in here, what with me taking over so suddenly and trying to fix all the damage done by the plant monster, so I’m like, whatever, you know? I’m just happy to see them excited about taking the lead on this and working so hard to make it happen.”

STITCHER LAUNCHES SLATE OF ORIGINAL PODCASTS
NEW YORK CITY – Top podcast listening service Stitcher has launched a lineup of original podcast programming, with a handful of popular shows joining together to form a new network. Shows on the new Stitcher network are available for free everywhere listeners access podcasts, including iTunes, Google Play, Spotify, Soundcloud and Stitcher itself, and are supported through advertising.
The offering is part of Stitcher’s long-term strategy to build a robust library of content that is free and supported by advertising to complement its subscription-based offering, Stitcher Premium.
Stitcher’s inaugural lineup includes listener favorites:
• “Katie Couric” features the award-winning journalist and TV personality and co-host Brian Goldsmith in candid, unscripted conversations with some of the biggest names in news, politics and pop culture. Recent interviews include Dan Taberski, creator of hit podcast “Missing Richard Simmons”; entrepreneur Tony Robbins; actor Alec Baldwin; and comedian Samantha Bee. “Katie Couric” joins Stitcher from Earwolf.
• Top food podcast “The Sporkful,” a long-running series hosted by Dan Pashman, launches as a Stitcher show on April 17. “The Sporkful” isn’t for foodies, it’s for eaters. Each week, Pashman talks with entertainers and regular folks about food and, in the process, learns more about them as people. Past guests have included Rosie Perez, Amy Sedaris, Jim Gaffigan, Alton Brown and Margaret Cho. The podcast was recently nominated for a James Beard Award and a Webby Award.
In new episodes, Pashman talks to actor Kumail Nanjiani about why he thinks all Islamophobes should try Pakistani food; recreates Civil Rights icon Rosa Parks’ pancakes recipe; explores the science of taste memory at the new Broadway production of “Sweeney Todd”; and tracks down a famous sandwich shop in Aleppo, Syria. Listen to the trailer at sporkful.com/stitcher.
• Documentary filmmaker Tally Abecassis launched the second season of “First Day Back,” a serialized, non-fiction show about coming back from something that changes you, on April 11. In the new season, Abecassis unfolds the story of Lucie Paquette and Gerry Madaire, lovebirds who were together for 13 years, until the fall of 2010, when she shot and killed him. Abecassis follows Paquette after her release from prison as she reconnects with family, gets a job and deals with the emotional aftermath of Madaire’s death.
• “The Longest Shortest Time,” the award-winning parenting show for everyone, is also making the move to Stitcher from Earwolf. Host Hillary Frank takes a broad view of parenting, examining topics ranging from birth stories to parents’ relationships with grown children and adults’ decisions on whether or not to even have children. The podcast, which has been named a “best of” by TIME, The Atlantic and Slate, is back with new shows on April 12, with an episode featuring actor and comedian Rob Huebel talking about his daughter’s 117-day stay in the NICU after being born nearly four months early. This season also has Frank diving into issues including the pressure of dating with the purpose of finding the father of your children; the rising trend of egg freezing; and multi-cultural parenting.
• Season two of “Tell Me Something I Don’t Know,” a live-journalism game show hosted by Stephen J. Dubner, author of the “Freakonomics” books and creator of “Freakonomics Radio.”
Stitcher also has several new series in the pipeline, including an as-yet-untitled reading podcast with actor LeVar Burton (of “Roots,” “Star Trek: The Next Generation” and “Reading Rainbow”).
“We want people to think of Stitcher as not only a great listening platform but also a home for a rich offering of original audio programming,” said Jenny Radelet, executive producer of original content for Stitcher. “We’ve already produced almost 50 original shows available exclusively on Stitcher Premium. Expanding our roster to include free, ad-supported shows felt like the next logical step.”
“Creating new content under the Stitcher brand helps us do a couple of important things: continue to serve Earwolf listeners the best comedy shows in podcasting; and create a new destination for well-produced programming of all kinds — journalism, smart talk shows and investigative reporting,” said Chris Bannon, chief content officer for Midroll.
With the addition of the Stitcher network, Midroll now represents 300 shows for advertising, including over 40 that are owned-and-operated. For more information about advertising opportunities, email [email protected].

#LitWednesday - Larry Achiampong
We recently had a chat with British-Ghanaian artist, Larry Achiampong about his artwork and performance style.

Could you please give us a brief introduction to yourself and your work?
My artistic practice involves both solo and collaborative projects that are represented in the form of installations, objects, visual or audio-based archives, live performance and sound to explore ideas that connect class, cross-cultural and post-digital identity.
I feel that the way I work is very much like a Dj or a crate-digger in that I search for histories and stories, and as a result of these findings I interweave new possibilities or versions into these moments. For example, the project ‘Meh Mogya’ (2011) is a confluence of audio samples from my parent’s record collection of Highlife Music, a sort of self-portrait that traces my Ghanaian heritage through an art form that was once used as a political tool of the nation’s pride.

When and how did you begin the journey into live art performance?
I like to view aspects of my upbringing as having a large influence on the way I view and conceive performance works. I come from a working-class background and my mother and father used to take my siblings and I to church every Sunday. We mostly went to Ghanaian, Ashanti-Pentecostal style churches that involved infectious, bold, energy-driven testimonials from the lead pastor/s. Of course, this is hugely connected to my latest video work ‘Sunday’s Best’, but in a retrospective essence it was here that I first saw the body used as a communicative tool; hand/bodily gestures, to dance, to spoken word and so on. My uncle used to live with the family when I was a child, and he was one of the first DJs to mix Highlife music with Hip-hop into his sets. I never went to many performances, however I would be fixated on his actions when he practiced his (vinyl-only at the time) DJ sets and crafted mixtapes at home. I think that is something that people manage to really miss when it comes to DJ’s and performances…those nuances of focus between the DJ, the sounds they choose and the marriage of collaged sounds. And in my teenage years there were always friends who were building rhymes or making beats using FL Studio (Fruity Loops) or reason. This was at the height of the Garage sound, moving into Grime. People would refer to their bedrooms as the ‘studio’, and the bedroom would be turned into this space where we would pour our energy and flex that hype – that in itself had a spirit of performance to it.

Could you please take us through Ph03nix Rising: The Mogya Project? What inspired it, and how did it come about?
Ph03nix Rising is a project that I conceived during my 2015-16 Sound & Music Embedded residency at the British Library. Following ‘Meh Mogya’ and ‘More Mogya’ and my focus on investigating sound within a Ghanaian context, I became interested in opening the framework by researching audio samples from communities across nations throughout West Africa. And so with access to the British Library’s World and Traditional Music Archive I spent time listening to a range of material - early Edwardian-era audios through to contemporary field recordings. And so similarly with the Mogya projects, I sampled and created new sounds from the archival material. Around that same time I just so happened to be playing a videogame called Xenoblade Chronicles X – a futuristic science-fictional game that involves humans setting up shop and colonising an alien planet through war and pillaging. I found parts of the story both troubling and intriguing in the same breath, but I also found that there was a relationship with the colonial context of the audios that I had sampled, and so I came up with this idea that I would use some of the visuals in this virtual landscape and couple them with the effected sounds that I had generated. This was coupled with a wordplay (that features in the video component of the performance) creates a manuscript of intergenerational colonial legacies.

The choice to document history and identity using science fiction created an interesting contrast to the narrative of the performance. Could you please tell us more about that?
I think where my practice is situated there’s a strong marriage with research that working with performance (and the body) became a natural platform to see how the archive could be activated, especially from the point of view of identity. For example, I also wear this garb during the Ph03nix Rising performance in the form of a spit sock hood, and a disposable boiler suit. I invited this into the performance as I felt there was an opportunity for me to deal with a psychological trauma that many black people (myself included) go through. Over the years I have experienced various acts of violence inflicted by the police due to having a black body, and at the young age of 16 I was arrested because I was black. I can vividly remember a lot of the distress and even hysteria that I went through - being placed within that jail cell, alone, I tried to calm myself and I just couldn’t. Its probably the most scared I have been in my life. My clothes were taken for forensics and I was made to put on the exact type of boiler suit that I am wearing in the performance. So I am on the one hand dealing with a history that is traumatic, personal, and interpersonal, whilst at the same time contemporary, since this kind of thing (and worse) is still happening in 2017. The use of the spit sock, a primitive degrading tool of oppression in this context then becomes a no brainer – it is frequently used by law enforcement throughout the west and due to black people being disproportionately represented at all stages of the criminal justice process, situations like that which happened to Ik Aihie are going to continue.

You make numerous references to Frantz Fanon in a lot of your work. Where did the interest come from, and can you tell us more about his influence in your work, and the importance thereof?
I came across Fanon’s work during my formative years, I was doing a BA in fine art (2002-05) and you could say I was finding it really hard to fit into that environment - I was studying in a place where there were fewer working class or black people and so I didn’t feel understood on a range of levels. I had a couple of great tutors whom I would talk to about how I was feeling and Peter Owen (who co-ran City Racing gallery) recommended looking into the work of Fanon. I read ‘Black Skin, White Masks’ and immediately found a space where I could begin to locate what was happening with regards to my black body being in the crosshairs of the white gaze. So although the ‘Finding Fanon’ collaboration with David Blandy in its title is dealing with a unique perspective on Fanon’s ideas and lost writings, I would certainly say that some of my past projects and works have also been influenced by his writings. You can find such connotations in the ‘Cloudface’ motif I employ from ‘Lemme School You’ through ‘Cloud’, ‘Glyth’ and even ‘Underdog’.

Where can people access you, and your work?
You can check out my website: larryachiampong.co.uk, I’m showing work in the Diaspora Pavilion at the 57th Venice Biennale from May 13th through November 26th. I’ll soon be releasing a new audio project on vinyl, its untitled, but you can stream it here. ‘Sunday’s Best’ will be screening at the BFI this month on the 31st of March. David Blandy and myself will also be screening the entire Finding Fanon Trilogy at Tate Modern on the 24th of May.

July Writers’ Forum

In my journey through the steps of independent publishing, refining my writing skills, and most recently completing a successful agent search, I’ve come across some excellent information, tips, tools, and shortcuts that I think would be beneficial to any writer. Once a month, I’ll share the “best of” information and news from the publishing industry as well as feature other authors and writing instructors with tips to share. I am incredibly thankful for the assistance and advice given to me from writing and publishing professionals and am happy pay that forward. On a professional level, I also use my publicity and editorial skills to aid other authors through my company Lost Lake Press.
Happy 100th Blogiversary to me! This is my 100th blog post since beginning the Three Rs: Reading, wRiting, and Roaming in 2014.

Book Events
I am not sure if Sherman Alexie had any upcoming book tour stops here in Wisconsin. I know he was here for the Untitled Town Book Fest in Green Bay this spring. Please take a moment to read his note about the heartbreaking reasons he has decided to stop his book tour.
He was promoting You Don't Have to Say You Love Me -- a memoir mostly about his relationship with his late mother, Lillian Alexie. It's available in both hardcover and Kindle or wherever you prefer to shop for books. (Alexie is best known for his middle-grade novel The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian.)

Don’t Miss Out on Affiliate Marketing
If you have ever felt like there’s no way you’re ever going to learn everything you ought to know about the publishing world, join the crowd. I had one such moment a few weeks ago when I learned about affiliate link marketing. (Some of you I am sure are shaking your heads at this and asking, “How did she not know about this?” Trust me. I asked myself the same thing.)
So, for those of you who need a quick tutorial, I am here to save the day!
Here’s how Wikipedia defines Affiliate Marketing: . . . (It) is a marketing practice in which a business rewards one or more affiliates for each visitor or customer brought about by the affiliate’s own marketing efforts.
What does this mean?
If you have links to your own products (or other products) on your blog or website you should be using an affiliate link which gives you a small fee for each purchase made by clicking through that link from your page or blog. You don’t get paid much, but if you already have purchase links to your books on your website, what do you have to lose by making sure these are affiliate links that pay you a small percentage on top of your book royalty. And you don’t have to stop there, many products are available for affiliate linkage. There’s a nice article about how this works on a blog by Melissa Culbertson.

At the moment, I’ve only created Amazon affiliate links—so that’s what I’ve focused on here. For the step-by-step process in how to become an Amazon Associate (the first step in being able to create these links), read this “Savvy Book Marketer” post. Once Amazon sends you your Associate acceptance email, this article from “Untethered Income” will help you successfully build (and test) product links.
This is a good start, but all of your book links ought to be affiliate links. Nearly every online retailer has a program, you just need the diligence to set them up.
Pre-Publication Information

Best Book Covers of 2016
The Design Observer released its winners of the 50 Best Book Covers of 2016. This may be especially helpful for reference if you are at the beginning of your cover design process. The only downside to this list is that the genre is not listed. Some are obvious, but others would require some research. There are a number of great contests out there to see which book covers are considered the best of the best. Definitely do some genre-specific internet searches to see what’s working best for the type of book you write BEFORE you finalize your cover.
The Pro-Bono Marketing Staff Every Self-Published Author Has at Their Fingertips
I have to admit that the reason I clicked on this Book Designer article by Eva Lesko Natiello was my reaction that I had somehow missed out on something. What the heck??
I knew better, of course, but it got me to click. This article is a witty take on how elements of book design and promotion can serve as the hardest-working parts of a successful publishing venture. For instance, she lists your Book Cover as the Senior V.P. of Sales and your Meta Data/Book Description as your Senior V.P. of Marketing. Read the full article here.
Using Keywords to your Advantage in your Book Description
As you set up your book description (particularly on KPD/Kindle) you get to pick two book categories and then seven keywords. If you are savvy when choosing those keywords, you can leverage them to give you access to more than your two main book categories. But you have to know the right words to choose for other categories where your book might fit! A 2013 article from Jennifer Bresnick served as my original guide to this and a new article from Melinda Clayton at Indies Unlimited addresses this same topic.
Using my first novel as an example, I chose these two main categories for my young adult fantasy novel based on Celtic mythology:
· Juvenile Fiction > Fantasy & Magic
· Juvenile Fiction > Legends, Myths, Fables > Other
Then I added these keywords: Teen & Young Adult, Paranormal, Celtic, Coming of Age, Historical, Ireland, Romance
Those keywords have allowed my book to not only be ranked and searchable under the two main categories but the book has also been listed under Coming of Age and Paranormal & Urban Fantasy even though those aren’t either of the two main categories. The articles take a deeper look at this subject.
When to Publish Your Book
And just when you think your book should come out in time for Christmas sales, think again . . . The BookBaby blog walks through the best months for release, depending on your topic.
Agents Tell It Like They See It!
If you want to listen in on agents being extremely candid about the book industry, check out this discussionfeaturing Jodi Reamer (Writers House), Kim Witherspoon (Inkwell Management), Robert Gottlieb (Trident Media), Sloan Harris (ICM), Eric Simonoff (WME), and Christy Fletcher (Fletcher & Company) on the “Publishing . . . And Other Forms of Insanity” blog.
Post-Publication
My Failed WATTPAD Experiment
I had hoped that the free reader platform, Wattpad, would be a springboard to more fans and more sales. Unfortunately, the Wattpad Success Story proved elusive for me. I detail my experience and what I did right and wrong here.
Promoting your YA Novel
Another article from Book Baby this month gives tips on promoting your young adult novel through different types of social media . . . there’s some expected advice about Facebook, Twitter, Goodreads, and Pinterest, but what was new to me were the tips about promoting via Reddit. I have one more thing on my list now--which might be good after my Wattpad fail.
Audio Books
Anne R. Allen has an excellent interview with an Audible/ACX narrator that gives inside info on getting your book recorded, so you don’t miss out on the fastest growing book market.
BUT I’M SO TIRED
I’ve thrown a lot at you today from a lot of different directions. Even if you’re not ready to use all of this advice immediately, you might be thinking, “I’m so tired!” or “There’s too much to do!” We all feel that way at least some of the time. Book writing is hard, but I think book marketing is even more difficult. Judith Briles on The Book Designer website recognizes this and talks us through our “marketing fatigue”. She acknowledges the hard work that is required to be successful and gives encouragements to keep us moving in the right direction!
Happy Reading & Writing, Valerie

Two Artists Ask, is Virtual Reality Becoming "A Nightmare You Can't Wake Up From?"
Jon Rafman. Poor Magic (Detail), 2017. Single-channel HD Video, Sculptural Installation, Runtime: 8:30min Copyright: Jon Rafman. Courtesy: the artist and Sprüth Magers
Before virtual reality and augmented reality were common, way back in the 50s and 60s, West Coast artist Stan VanDerBeek was breaking ground in immersive experiences with expanded cinema, video, and computer art. His Movie-Drome, with its multiple projections on the inside of a dome, took the idea of cinema and made it into a 360-degree experience of immersive audio and visuals. In a new exhibition at Sprüth Magers in Los Angeles, VanDerBeek (who passed away in 1984) is paired with artist Jon Rafman, a modern maker of immersive, expanded realities.
“A starting point of the show was to imagine a time where digital devices, animation and virtual worlds are constant presences,” the show’s curator Johannes Fricke Waldthausen tells The Creators Project. “[Presences with] impact on our identity and how we navigate our lives and our feelings of how we relate to each other.”

In the exhibition, two figures in the history of immersive media collide. Viewers see how a sense of poetry—often dark, satirical, and occasionally dystopian—finds its way into Rafman’s current and VanDerBeek’s past animated realities. The works on display include 14 framed collage pieces on billboard paper, featuring pastels and watercolors. VanDerBeek’s choice of substrate likely had something to do with Marshall McLuhan’s idea of how printed media (and electronic media like television) impacted individual and collective reality.
“Instagram’s imagery and mood is very virtual, very simulated,” says Waldthausen of VanDerBeek’s framed pieces. “The stills from the works in the show look like Instagram images, like perfected renderings. So it is these two adjunct worlds that do really matter; the digital and screen on the one hand, and our feelings, body-perception and truly creative, human qualities on the other.”

Another wall features projections of three of VanDerBeek’s 16mm films, here projected in video—Oh!, Astral Man, and Fluids. These animated works feature collage, paints, and psychotropic substances, all designed to draw the viewer into VanDerBeek’s media-saturated simulated realities.
Rafman’s work, also animated and stuffed with various media, shows just how far the sense of immersion has come since the mid-20th century. It also shows how computer-generated animation, which VanDerBeek was interested in, is taking us closer and closer to the uncanny valley.
“I think like anyone what I consumed growing up had a huge influence on me as an individual,” says Rafman. “I played quite a lot of video games and read a lot of science fiction, and I think I pull a lot from those early childhood feelings and profound experiences.”
Jon Rafman, Poor Magic (Detail)
“There is so much capital invested in video games and they’re a big product with so many subtleties, like a sense of lighting with the way it dapples across the grass or leaves,” he adds. “I think that this is a type of mise-en-scène that doesn’t really exist in Hollywood films anymore.”
Rafman searches for images, video clips, and comments on everything from YouTube to Reddit, taking screenshots here and there, but never recording his sources. Some of these materials make their way into his work, while others merely serve as conceptual inspiration. Rafman likes the idea of not remembering where things came from, and also not knowing how it will all ultimately connect.
Installation view of Jon Rafman’s ‘Transdimensional Serpent’
For his new piece, Poor Magic, which is debuting at the exhibition, Rafman used one such found quote in a mesmerizing way. As the video’s opening frames unfold with bluish skeletons moving on a black void, a voice intones atop dark electronic drones, “If you can’t sleep at night it means you’re awake in someone else’s dream.” This quote, which Rafman says is either an ancient Chinese proverb or inspirational meme found on Tumblr, introduces the idea that virtual realities, simulations, and other immersive experiences are akin to dream states.
“The idea for Poor Magic came from imagining almost the worst possible or most distressing scenario of what would happen if the singularity was achieved,” he adds. “For me that would be a world in which we’re all uploaded, where no one can die anymore, and we’re all avatars in a virtual simulation with a computer AI that is infinitely intelligent and controls us forever and ever. So, it’s kind of like a nightmare you can’t wake up from.”
Jon Rafman, Poor Magic (Detail)
Rafman finds shades of this nightmare in our everyday reality. Some might experience it as constant psychological suffering, while others might experience it as a political ideology from which there seems no escape.
Rafman’s other works in the exhibition, Open Heart Warrior and Transdimensional Serpent, feature a similar digital darkness. In Open Heart Warrior, scenes of natural splendor are paired with gruesome human realities of imprisonment and death. And in Transdimensional Serpent, Rafman uses an Oculus Rift to take viewers into a virtual reality experience that defies time and space, with results that are both beautiful and disturbing.
Stan VanDerBeek, Untitled, 1978-83
True, VanDerBeek and Rafman are separated as much by time as by the technology and media they used. But their works show a similar interest in how technology warps reality.
“Today we are surrounded by simulated, animated worlds—we are within them and they are in us, like a dream-state or a non-linear, infinite library, as Jorge Luis Borges would put it,” says Waldthausen. “An automatic world, where the body, the senses and technology are more closely united than ever before. This is only the beginning of A.I. and augmented reality.”

Jon Rafman / Stan VanDerBeek runs through March 4 at Sprüth Magers.

Buffy: Oh, sorry. It's just been a really weird day. (smiles) Xander: Yeah! Buffy died, and everything! Willow: Wow! Harsh. Giles: I should have known that wouldn't stop you. Buffy smiles up at him again. Ms. Calendar: Well, what do we do now? Giles: I don't know about the rest of you, but I'd like to get out of this place. I don't like the library very much anymore. Xander: Hey! I hear there's a dance at the Bronze tonight. Could be fun. Cordelia: Yeah! Willow: Buffy? Buffy: Sure! We saved the world. I say we party!
