since we'll be here for a while... might as well make the best out of it.

she   peered   out   the   window   of   the   old   farmhouse   as   storm   clouds   rolled   up   above   them,   thunder   cracking   and   rain   pelting   the   windows   as   a   herd   of   walkers   shuffled   around   outside   —   mindless   and   hungry.   she   heard   johns   words   and   let   out   a   sigh,   closing   the   blinds   and   stumbling   her   way   in   the   darkness   until   she   found   a   chair   to   plop   down   in.   

‘   oh   yeah?   ’         she   says,   fiddling   with   the   handle   of   the   recliner   before   it   quickly   threw   her   back,   nearly   making   her   fall   out.            ‘   uh   —   you   have   any   ideas?   not   to   be   a   downer   but   there’s   not   much   to   do   here   —   unless   you   wanna   make   out.   ’         she   jokes,   of   course,   as   she   dusts   off   an   old   magazine   from   the   end   table   beside   her.            ‘   it   doesn’t   really   matter   because   if   those   things   get   in   here,   if   even   just   one   goes   off   path   and   drags   the   rest   this   way   —   then   we’re   dead.   ’  

He watched and waited until she had pulled the remnants of the blinds and curtain closed before he slid the small lantern from his bag, clearing away a spot on the coffee table to set it on. He didn't really require the light, but no one else needed to know that, and she clearly did, judging by the way she scuffled her way into a seat. He switched it onto a low setting; enough to give them a dim glow, and function, but nowhere near enough to draw any unwanted attention. A brow flicked upwards at her initial suggestion, and he decided this was as good a time as any to spend digging through his duffel for two of the MRE packs he had stuffed away.

"I figured dinner and conversation could suffice," John suggested dryly. "Maybe some cards, if all else fails."

A faint smile offered as he dropped down to sit cross legged on the floor beside the coffee table, his back pressed against the back of the couch behind him. He still didn't know what to make of the woman, but then, they hadn't had quite all that much time for conversation since they'd run into each other a few days past. Trying to keep away from the shambling dead and find some place to wait out the horde had taken priority. He was hoping this would be a good time for him to get some answers. "So how long, would you guess, has all ... this," he gestured vaguely to the world around them, leaning in to offer her one of the MRE packs. "Been going on, exactly?"

Fort Bragg. North Carolina. Military base, United States Army. It took mere milliseconds to cross reference what information she had about the base, it's location, personnel, purpose. At least, what information she had gleaned from books, encyclopedias, magazines, atlases that she'd found, absorbed. It was ... inconvenient, to say the least, that so much of the world's information had come to rely on computer systems and data networks that were no longer functioning. She could power up any device to read what was stored locally, but she had yet to find a way to access the satellites that were still operational and almost all cell towers and internet providers were long dead. It would take weeks, she estimated, with the children and the delayed progress between terrain, weather and the walking dead. "You were military?" It was the logical conclusion, but he could have just as likely been a civilian attache, and the question seemed a logical one to ask.

"I have no specific destination in mind," she answered, after a moment of consideration. "And no one to look for, so I have just tried to keep myself moving, doing what I can to avoid the gathering packs of the dead." She curled her hands around her mug, drawing it up to take a slow sip of the still steaming liquid. The scent, and taste of it were comforting, even if it wasn't technically needed. "I'm -- grateful, for the company. As long as it lasts. I never thought I would be one to find solitude wanting, but it can be ... burdensome, to be left only with your own thoughts, I've found."

He watched her from across the fire, his eyes sharp and intense, as if he could find the truth or lie written on her face. He’d been called too incense before, by friends who meant well and those who didn’t. People that most likely were dead now. He chose not to respond to her declaration. Her actions would show how honest she was. He hoped she was being honest, if only for the twin's sake. They were already getting attached. This new life of isolation was proving hard on the children who before all this had always been so friendly and outgoing. They got that from their mother.

With a sigh, Anakin settled back against an old pine tree and stretched his legs out. “For now we’re just headed south. There’s Fort Bragg in North Carolina, I spent a few months there years ago. I still remember the area pretty well. With any luck there might be something of it still left.” It would be a long trek by foot with two ten-year-olds who tired easily. Cars were easy to find, it was gas that was proving to be the problem. “What about you?”

This is a sideblog, and I follow back from my main @grimmusings. Please direct IMs there, since it’s easier for me to keep all my messages on one blog. It’s also easier to start interactions with me there, where I regularly post open starters and meme prompts. For a full list of rules, see my main. I do not practice exclusives after bad experiences, and while I will put more attention to mutuals, I am not mutually exclusive, but I do hold the right to be selective in those I write with.

I am incredibly busy, so activity will be medium to low, and replies come out through my queue, right now I have it set to two posts a day. This is to help me manage my time and stress level when it comes to writing. However, I will usually post the first reply to something I ask for when it's immediately written to get a thread started.

I do love ships, and this has been the one character where i've been super open to it, but shipping with Bucky is chemistry based.

I'm open to plotting, but as a rule, I'm horrible at it initially. I like to start off winging things to see where it leads the characters and how they interact with each other. But don't hesitate to message me if you're interested in something.

I try to keep this a drama free zone - call outs, hate, and rude anons are not welcome - I've had a lot of bad experiences with partners, so I ask that my boundaries are respected and if you have an issue with me or the portrayal hard block.

eli was plagued with visits, whispers, dreams and sights of the dead. something he feared, hated and was terrified of. not only because of the nature of what he was seeing and his age. but how their scientifically minded parents and family would view his claims. eli did not go egon's route of understanding. instead. he went the opposite trying to rationalize his fears, visions and hauntings in hopes of the problem 'ceasing to exist'. where one was an outcast (egon), eli was viewed as conforming to the spengler mindframe and fit in with his family.

a guilt he carries now as all his willful ignorance and blind eyes never truly worked (the ghosts? nightmares? everything is still there) and with egon dead? has only worsened. it's with the arrival of an anonymous letter warning him of what is about to pass in new york city than the reclusive spengler has made himself known and extremely reluctantly involved with his brother's former teammates. all of egon's inventions. those that exist and never were are inside of his mind. his brother's research, thoughts, ideas? it's all there. he's just never told anyone.. and who knows what he's willing to give up?

multiverse!madness: At the moment of his death, Jesus finds himself transported to an alternate universe (Marvel, DC, other horror fandoms, etc.). Though he distinctly remembers dying, he's unharmed there and must adjust to the new conditions, whether that's normal, pre-apocalyptic life or a different apocalypse scenario.

tlou: Jesus was fifteen when the outbreak happened, and he later joined the Fireflies in Atlanta, though he eventually becomes disillusioned by their tactics and lives as a nomad. (bio)
