Hi! I’m new to Tumblr- in fact I pretty much just joined yesterday. But I absolutely LOVE your account and I just wanna ask- I really like dark academia and chaotic academia, but I have no idea how to really incorporate it in my life. I can’t decorate my room in a particular academia style, as my parents won’t let me, but do you have any tips as to exactly how I can include dark academia in my lifestyle. I know it sounds confusing, but please answer the best you can!
Thank you SO much!
It's a really great question! A few years ago, I had the same problem as you, but I didn't have the courage to ask questions. I searched on my own, making it a much more challenging task. That's why I appreciate that you wrote about it to me :) Dark academia is a lifestyle; your surroundings don't have to look like aesthetic Tumblr pictures, although it's a nice addition :) Be hungry for knowledge, do your best at school, not for grades, but to broaden your horizons, for knowledge. Try to be like a child, be interested in the world around you, have hobbies, read books, articles, attend extra classes, learn new languages. These can be various topics you immerse yourself in; dark academia favors classical patterns, studying philosophy, Greek, Latin, history, art, etc. Of course, if you want to immerse yourself in this community, boldly delve into these topics, but every field of study, every language, a valuable book also fits into academia. Your style of dress can also make a big difference; by dressing in this style, you immediately resonate with the aesthetics, giving you much more motivation to do "dark academia" things. As for interior decoration, my room doesn't fit this aesthetic either :) But large quantities of books on shelves, on the floor, plants, a poster that fits the aesthetic, candles, candle holders, do most of the work.
You can also try adding old-school activities to your daily routine. Writing with a fountain pen in a beautiful, old looking notebook, experimenting with different coffee/tea brewing styles, and enjoying them in elegant porcelain, with a scented candle nearby and a good book :) Incorporate the art of savoir-vivre into your life; stroll with a book, notebook, and sketchbook to the park, cafe, or library :) I personally enjoyed studying in the library, I am much more productive and motivated to learn and read books that surround me.
MUSIC is also important!! Jazz, classical, or try finding playlists on spotify with this theme. I have one, it's very old but maybe you'll like it :)

Book Blurb:
A glittering, laugh-out-loud second chance romance that reminds us true love is sometimes the one thing you never planned on.
Ali Rubin has a reputation for spontaneity. Like that time she made a drunken bet in London that led to matching tattoos with a stranger. Her joie de vivre is one of her best qualities; she lives every day to the fullest and follows her dreams wherever they take her. And now, they’re taking her from her career as a chef in New York City back home to Baltimore, where she’s interning as a wedding planner.
Despite the occasional fantasy about her British tattoo twin, Ali never expected to see Graham again. So no one is more surprised than she is when he turns up in Baltimore, ordering a latte at her favorite cafe. When they reconnect during an enchanting evening together, Ali can’t help but wonder if Graham might be someone special.
At the same time, she's desperate to succeed in her new career and prove that she isn’t the family flake. When she gets a job planning a high profile wedding at a historic hotel, it seems like things are finally falling into place. That is, until Graham turns out to be the groom.
Graham’s family owns the once-grand, now struggling Black-Eyed Susan, and he’s returned to Baltimore to help his grandmother get it back on its feet. He’s certain that hosting a wedding at the hotel is just the publicity boost it needs. Ali’s boss agrees, and promises Ali a full-time gig if the affair goes off without a hitch. Unfortunately, Ali and Graham can't seem to ignore their rekindled chemistry, especially when it’s revealed that Graham and his fiancée are planning a marriage of convenience. Still, staying away from each other is the best thing they can do, since giving in to their growing feelings might cost them everything.
Because when it comes to love, all bets are off.
Review:
The Wedding Planner movie but with a new twist as two people who get matching tattoos and have a one night stand meet 10 years later when she becomes a chef... for his wedding. Ali is spontaneous and when she gets a matching tattoo with a hot British guy on her last day in London and has a one night stand with him she'd never in all her years think she'd ever run into him again.... until she does as his newly hired chef for his wedding. Ali never expected to see Graham again and of all places she definitely did not expect to see him as the groom for the wedding she's been hired to work at. Yet the moment they meet its like the sparks never left and they can't stay away from one another. Ali and Graham know they shouldn't be feeling what they do with each other as the wedding looms nearer and nearer and the secret Graham is hiding might change everything. What are you suppose to do when the person you're in love with is getting married to someone else? So one thing to know about this book is that it deals of course with the very specific trope of cheating, and yes they explain it away later but its one trope I dislike so much. In this book it just feels so unnecessary and kind of just useless. I didn't care for it and yeah its a kind of Wedding Planner (J-Lo movie) vibe but I just don't care for it. I would highly recommend you read the blurb of the book to check for this specific trope before reading because if you dont like cheating, and if its not explained in a good enough way, this book is definitely NOT for you. If you like the cheating trope then yeah, give this a go, if you like the "complicated relationship" trope or "missing the one and meeting them again in a more complicated scenario" trope then yeah absolutely pick this book up.

tag game! got tagged by @venndaai thank you so much!
favorite colour: it's been orange for a while now, and it probably always going to be close to my heart, but recently I've been wearing a lot of really bright green as well and it looks *so good* on me
last song: I'm on my commute right now and listening to the album Bourdon by Topette!! cause they announced a tenth anniversary tour and I'm really excited ^_^ Before getting tagged the last song on my music app was Le Temps De Vivre by Boris Vian but the song that was stuck in my head this morning was Laid in Blood by the Mechanisms
last movie: it has been a while since I watched any, but I think the last one was whedon's much ado about nothing. It was, kinda disappointing, honestly, it hasn't held up super well since I got to know the play a lot better
currently reading: mostly fanfic, my brain hasn't really had space for more because of phd reasons. I kinda wanna start in the hugo packet, and Starter Villain should be pretty easy reading
currently watching: Leverage with @sersorrel , Dimension 20 on my own (Fantasy High Sophomore yr) and dr who along with basically everyone I know
currently craving: a really good cup of coffy. Kinda considering whether i can afford to go to the Nice Cafe to do some marking this afternoon
tea or coffee: ... Actually both. Why would I ever choose?? Tea is for first thing in the morning or in the evening, coffee is a wonderful process to either make or look at, and an espresso after a big meal is genuinely perfect, I love it all.
I'm supposed to tag people I wanna know better or catch up with, so let's do one of each: @vulturesrottencorpse @failed-human-being
#really repping the anglo-french with my song and hot drink answers lol#the song question kinda threw me off#i guess it makes sense if you are a playlist enjoyer but i am very much a full album person#i really am very very excited about seeing topette#(probably need to buy tickets soonish oops)

Life is…Life
"A plate is a plate. A man is a man. Life is ... Life."
Reflecting on Jean-Luc Godard's Vivre sa vie
[I originally published this post on September 4, 2009, in my blog Running Into Myself, while living and teaching in China.]

"...I don't think there's any better way to fight off the chill of winter than a big bowl of carbohydrates swimming in melted butter." David Lebovitz, Wed., Dec 31, 2008 Imagine if all the tumult of the body were to quiet down, along with our busy thoughts. Imagine if all things that are perishable grew still. And imagine if that moment were to go on and on, leaving behind all other sights and sounds but this one vision which ravishes and absorbs and fixes the beholder in joy, so that the rest of eternal life were like that moment of illumination which leaves us breathless. Saint Augustine

Anna Karina in Vivre sa vie
Among my obsessions lately have been all things French; witness my continual references to David Lebovitz' blog about food and Paris.
I've also been watching a bunch of French films recently. Is it my imagination, or am I understanding more of the dialogue, since the downloads and DVDs don't include English subtitles? Jean-Luc Godard's Vivre sa vie (1962), which I watched again last night for the third or fourth time, is rapidly becoming one of my favorite movies.
Nana in a cafe, opening scene of Vivre sa vie
I was mesmerized by the unusual, voyeuristic camera placement that often photographs conversations showing the backs of people’s heads; by the informal, everyday atmosphere of Paris in the early 60s; and, most of all, by the images of Anna Karina (then married to Godard). The film, above all, seems to be a meditation on her face in its many expressions and moods. It's a many-layered evocation of life, living, choices, and death, through masterful use of sound, silence, symbolism, dialogue, and camera work.
"The film was made by sort of a second presence," Godard said; "the camera is not just a recording device but a looking device, that by its movements makes us aware that it sees her, wonders about her, glances first here and then there, exploring the space she occupies, speculating."

Anna Karina

The streetwalker's endless beat begins
The story in brief: a young woman's loss of income leads her to become a prostitute; she hooks up with a pimp, eventually finds love, and finally, er, suffers a tragic and abrupt end. Can you even imagine an early 60s American film dealing matter-of-factly with prostitution? (Vivre sa vie includes a voice-over, clinical dissection of the facts and daily routine of a prostitute's life) Yes, I know Shirley MacLaine played a whole series of hookers-with-a-heart-of-gold, but the word was never used. Nor did money change hands. Nor did we ever get a great shot like this:

Some things are slightly less obvious, though:

Anna Karina as...Louise Brooks?

Louise Brooks, 1920s
Compare the expression on Karina's face above with with that of actress Ellen Andrée in Degas' painting of L' Absinthe below:

Edgar Degas, Dans un café (L'Absinthe), 1875 -1876, oil on canvas,H. 92,0 ; L. 68,5 cm. Musée d’Orsay
This has always been one of my favorite paintings, maybe because of the deep alienation and sadness in the woman's downcast eyes. She also reminds me of my mother, who had a lot of her own sadness.
Enough said. You'll just have to watch the film, or read an excellent interpretation here:
https://www.sensesofcinema.com/2000/cteq/vivre/
Oh, and don't let the conversation about the chicken confuse you:
Nana's lover tells her about a homework assignment submitted by a little girl to his father the teacher. In this essay, the little girl writes: "The chicken has an inside and an outside. Remove the outside and you find the inside. Remove the inside and you find the soul."

vivre sa vie (1962, Jean-luc Godard)

while the hatred I have for Jean-luc Godard knows know bounds, the love and connection I have for this film makes me tolerate him at little more, i first watched this when I was 14 and the way anna karinas performance as nana in each episode is beautiful, the episode that I find the most inspiring for my experimental is when nana meets her friend yvette in the cafe and they have a conversation shows how important friendship is , there is a feeling of normalcy between the two women (this is then lost very quickly and nana goes through the worst moments of her life) which I have always thought was magnificently captured , while Godard's visual style isn't what I'm necessarily going for with within my film, his ability to capture emotion using the new wave style is something that I would like to mirror, new wave uses a lot of experimental techniques such as long tracking shots, i want to showcase the personal story's that were more prevalent throughout this mode of story telling, I also like the raw elements that can be found, I would like to use still images which show candid moments from the people I love.

The Fantastical City Of Light

'The Fantastical City Of Light'
So here we are in 2023 in a world where epidemics, price hikes, and fear of what's to come are the topics most people are concerned with while in a distant European city, there is magic to be felt and seen. Paris, France is a magnetic metropolis alive with regal history and quaint sidewalk cafes offering a unique passersby perspective. The city of light is expansive and filled with curious ideals as love is the French currency and embellished by the eloquent tone of its native language. To sum up, this city of light delivers a sermon of ancient architecture copied by worldly architects for their unique visual in the format of Art Deco - Gothic - Romanesque - Renaissance and lavishly adorned Rococo. To say the French are genius when it comes to creating is magnified in one permanent structure situated on the Champ de Mars Park ground where it holds court as an iron composition referred to as La Tour Eiffel. The magnificent imagination of Gustave Eiffel a young engineer who inspired the world with his metal God Of Wonder. And now potentially the most visited and loved monument on the planet.
'The Eiffel Tower is the pride of France and was originally designed for an 1889 World Fair (Exposition Universelle)'
Mademoiselle Eiffel was assigned to stand for Frances's victories in the industrial age and was not entirely popular with many Parisians who considered this iron lady a blight on the horizon of the more common stone monuments such as the Notre Dame Cathedral and Arc De Triomphe. A design by Napoleon Bonaparte to celebrate his numerous war victories and today a legacy of those who died in honor of France. Paris is a light in the dark as everywhere you turn the history is bright and even at night the Eiffel Tower sends light into the far reaches of the cosmos with a spectacular light show that leaves you wanting for more. Paris has the 'ooh la factor' with her cobblestone streets and bridges that hold the padlocks of hearts from every corner of the globe. This is a sanctuary in an ever-changing world where one can fall in love or forget their troubles as the city emulates eternal magic. Yes, this city is magical and a time warp of evolution as each building tells a story of life, love, and French liberty. Paris was home to royals who reigned from the Palace of Versailles until a revolution spearheaded by Napoleon saw the change to an Emperor's rule.

'The Chateau de Versailles is a monument to opulence and a landmark of beauty with emblems of gold and picturesque ceilings'
. It was here the Louis Kings reigned but let's not forget the influence of Queen Marie Antoinette and her fashionista influence in the world today. The era of the French monarch brings a fantasia effect that reminds us of times gone by and fairytale royals who lived a life of privilege and authority in surroundings that inspired luxury and grandeur. What makes Paris so inviting is its insatiable addictive quality of escape from the climate we are living in right now. Its European culture, history, and captivating vibes are so endearing lovers choose to marry by the Eiffel Tower. A photoshoot no doubt revered and remembered for the course of the couple's marriage. The infectious joie de vivre that motivates an aura of amore is what makes Paris a unique place on Planet Earth. And once you have experienced this vibrant French capital you will feel a haunting to return.
