NASA to gather in-flight imagery of commercial test capsule re-entry
A NASA team specializing in collecting imagery-based engineering datasets from spacecraft during launch and reentry is supporting a European aerospace company's upcoming mission to return a subscale demonstration capsule from space.
NASA's Scientifically Calibrated In-Flight Imagery (SCIFLI) team supports a broad range of mission needs across the agency, including Artemis, science missions like OSIRIS-REx (Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, and Security—Regolith Explorer), and NASA's Commercial Crew Program. The SCIFLI team also supports other commercial space efforts, helping to develop and strengthen public-private partnerships as NASA works to advance exploration, further cooperation, and open space to more science, people, and opportunities.
Later this month, SCIFLI intends to gather data on The Exploration Company's Mission Possible capsule as it returns to Earth following the launch on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. One of the key instruments SCIFLI will employ is a spectrometer that detects light radiating from the capsule's surface, which researchers can use to determine the surface temperature of the spacecraft.
Traditionally, much of this data comes from advanced Computational Fluid Dynamics modeling of what happens when objects of various sizes, shapes, and materials enter different atmospheres, such as those on Earth, Mars, or Venus.
"While very powerful, there is still some uncertainty in these Computational Fluid Dynamics models. Real-world measurements made by the SCIFLI team help NASA researchers refine their models, meaning better performance for sustained flight, higher safety margins for crew returning from the moon or Mars, or landing more mass safely while exploring other planets," said Carey Scott, SCIFLI capability lead at NASA's Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia.
The SCIFLI team will be staged in Hawaii and will fly aboard an agency Gulfstream III aircraft during the re-entry of Mission Possible over the Pacific Ocean.
"The data will provide The Exploration Company with a little bit of redundancy and a different perspective—a decoupled data package, if you will—from their onboard sensors," said Scott.
From the Gulfstream, SCIFLI will have the spectrometer and an ultra-high-definition telescope trained on Mission Possible. The observation may be challenging since the team will be tracking the capsule against the bright daytime sky.
Researchers expect to be able to acquire the capsule shortly after entry interface, the point at roughly 200,000 feet, where the atmosphere becomes thick enough to begin interacting with a capsule, producing compressive effects such as heating, a shock layer, and the emission of photons, or light.
In addition to spectrometer data on Mission Possible's thermal protection system, SCIFLI will capture imagery of the parachute system opening. First, a small drogue chute deploys to slow the capsule from supersonic to subsonic, followed by the deployment of a main parachute. Lastly, cloud-cover permitting, the team plans to image splashdown in the Pacific, which will help a recovery vessel reach the capsule as quickly as possible.
If flying over the ocean and capturing imagery of a small capsule as it zips through the atmosphere during the day sounds difficult, it is. But this mission, like all SCIFLI's assignments, has been carefully modeled, choreographed, and rehearsed in the months and weeks leading up to the mission. There will even be a full-dress rehearsal in the days just before launch.
Not that there aren't always a few anxious moments right as the entry interface is imminent and the team is looking out for its target. According to Scott, once the target is acquired, the SCIFLI team has its procedures nailed down to a—pardon the pun—science.
"We rehearse, and we rehearse, and we rehearse until it's almost memorized," he said.
The Exploration Company, headquartered in Munich, Germany, and Bordeaux, France, enlisted NASA's support through a reimbursable Space Act Agreement and will use SCIFLI data to advance future capsule designs.
"Working with NASA on this mission has been a real highlight for our team. It shows what's possible when people from different parts of the world come together with a shared goal," said Najwa Naimy, chief program officer at The Exploration Company.
"What the SCIFLI team is doing to spot and track our capsule in broad daylight, over the open ocean, is incredibly impressive. We're learning from each other, building trust, and making real progress together."
NASA Langley is known for its expertise in engineering, characterizing, and developing spacecraft systems for entry, descent, and landing. The Gulfstream III aircraft is operated by the Flight Operations Directorate at NASA's Armstrong Flight Research Center in Edwards, California.

The Trump administration’s sweeping cuts to disaster management will cost lives in the US, with hollowed-out agencies unable to accurately predict, prepare for or respond to extreme weather events, earthquakes and pandemics, a leading expert has warned.
Samantha Montano, professor of emergency management at Massachusetts Maritime Academy and author of Disasterology: Dispatches from the Frontlines of the Climate Crisis, said the death toll from disasters including hurricanes, tornadoes and water pollution will rise in the US unless Trump backtracks on mass layoffs and funding cuts to key agencies. That includes the Federal Emergency Management Agency (Fema), whose work relies heavily on the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (Noaa), which is also being dismantled.
“The overall risk of threats and hazards occurring in the US has increased since this administration took over, while the capacity of our emergency management system is being diminished,” said Montano in an interview.
Emergency managers will be operating blindly without the data that we have become accustomed to from Noaa and other science agencies. It’s what we rely on to issue warnings and evacuation orders, and pre-position resources. It is really scary because we used to not have good weather data – and death tolls were remarkably higher.
“It is difficult to know if it will be the next hurricane where the response completely fails or three hurricanes from now. But I feel confident in saying that if the cuts continue, we will be seeing higher death tolls and more devastation, absolutely. It’s beyond crazy that we are eliminating the funding for these agencies particularly at this moment where hazards are increasing because of climate change,” Montano said.
Emergency management involves mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery from all sorts of disasters including Covid and other major disease outbreaks, as well as floods, fires, tornadoes, earthquakes and explosions. Fema works closely with state and local government agencies to provide resources, coordination, technical expertise, leadership and communication with the public.
Since returning to the White House, Trump has threatened to disband Fema, frequently belittling the agency amid its ongoing efforts to help communities devastated by the Los Angeles wildfires and Hurricane Helene, the category 4 storm that left at least 230 people dead in southern Appalachia.
With the start of the hurricane and tornado season just days away, Fema’s preparedness plans and billions of dollars in disaster assistance and grants have stalled. Reports suggest that more than a third of Fema’s permanent full-time workforce has been fired or accepted buyouts, including some of its most experienced and knowledgable leaders who coordinate disaster responses – which can involve multiple federal agencies for months or years. About 75% of the agency’s workforce are on-call or reservists whose contracts may not be renewed, internal memos suggest.
“There’s already been a brain drain from Fema. We simply will not have the people to respond to a major disaster like Helene, but they’re also going to run into problems responding to multiple smaller disasters – fires, floods, storms that happen around the country simultaneously, which with the climate crisis are becoming more common. The administration has lit the world’s premier emergency-management agency on fire,” said Montano.
Under Trump, Fema has so far denied federal assistance for tornadoes in Arkansas, flooding in West Virginia and a windstorm in Washington state. It also has refused North Carolina’s request for an extension of federal relief, as recovery efforts from Helene continue.
Pulling back resources will have an immediate impact on individual households and communities, many of whom voted for Trump. Somewhat harder to measure is the impact of shrinking Fema and the National Weather Service on messaging, a key element of emergency management that was already challenging amid mounting misinformation and disinformation about extreme weather, Covid, measles and even Fema itself.
“Effective communication rests on trust and I do not know how the American public can trust a single thing that this administration says and that extends to Fema,” Montano said, “where they put in an acting administrator [Cameron Hamilton] who himself was spreading disinformation about the agency during Hurricane Helene.”
Hamilton amplified false claims by Trump and Musk that Fema had spent disaster aid on immigrants and blocked help to North Carolina. Said Montano:
“In a communication ecosystem where there’s already so much confusion, we have now lost Fema as a generally reliable source. It’s difficult to see how people are going to get accurate information in major disasters, let alone deal with the complicated recovery process after … It’s incredible, but every phase, every aspect of emergency management has been under assault in Trump’s first 100 days …
“And while cuts to HHS [the Department of Health and Human Services] and USAID are most important for preventing disease outbreaks, everything being done to the emergency management system is also making us less prepared for the next pandemic.”
Noaa’s workforce and budget are also being shrunk, with the agency’s National Weather Service (NWS) and climate research among the worst hit. Trump’s policy blueprint, Project 2025, called for Noaa to “be broken up and downsized”, claiming the agency is a driver of the “climate change alarm industry”.
Trump and his billionaire donor Elon Musk are also trying to dismantle AmeriCorps, the federal volunteer service that plays an important role in disaster recovery, as well as expelling immigrants who make up the majority of the disaster workforce.
The cuts to Fema, Noaa, the NWS and other agencies involved in disaster prevention make little economic sense. For every dollar the federal government spends on mitigation, it saves at least $6 of taxpayer money in response and recovery.
“The National Weather Service and emergency management are really clear examples of where you need the government to function because it just isn’t something that the private sector is going to be interested in and can’t profit off,” said Montano.
Most disaster mitigation or prevention happens behind the scenes, a complex process involving testing, standards, expertise and enforcement, which rarely generates scrutiny unless something goes wrong.
“The reason I feel so sure that we’re going to see increasing death tolls from storms and other disasters is because the public – and many in this administration – perhaps do not understand the complexity of risk mitigation happening across federal agencies, which prevents these bigger disasters from happening,” said Montano.
For instance, the 1972 Clean Water Act represents a massive ongoing mitigation project, according to Montano, which, along with other key environmental protection laws, is now under assault: “With the erosion of those regulations, risks will go unmitigated and have the potential to turn into disaster. We are setting ourselves up for more water-related health crises, more Flints.”
The impact of federal cuts will depend in part on to what extent state and local governments fill federal funding gaps. Historically, investment in emergency management to prevent future potential disasters has rarely been a political priority.
“Community organizing is going to be really critical here, to make sure there is pressure from local and state officials to pick up some of the slack. But, some of these are outside of the bounds of what a single state can do on their own, which is why we have federal regulations to begin with,” Montano said.
Montano also believes Trump could still be forced to roll back some of his rollbacks, if there is pushback from the courts and voters. She said: “I don’t think they’re done dismantling Fema, but the biggest wild card here is what and where disasters happen over the next several months – and the politics of that. The climate crisis is here, and these disasters are not stopping.”

I’m not sure how reliably I’ll be able to keep up with it, but I’ve been wanting to start posting weekly or monthly Good News compilations, with a focus on ecology but also some health and human rights type stuff. I’ll try to keep the sources recent (like from within the last week or month, whichever it happens to be), but sometimes original dates are hard to find. Also, all credit for images and written material can be found at the source linked; I don’t claim credit for anything but curating.
Anyway, here’s some good news from the first week of March!
1. Mexican Wolf Population Grows for Eighth Consecutive Year
Tumblr media
““In total, 99 pups carefully selected for their genetic value have been placed in 40 wild dens since 2016, and some of these fosters have produced litters of their own. While recovery is in the future, examining the last decade of data certainly provides optimism that recovery will be achieved.””
2. “Remarkable achievement:” Victoria solar farm reaches full power ahead of schedule
Tumblr media
“The 130MW Glenrowan solar farm in Victoria has knocked out another milestone, reaching full power and completing final grid connection testing just months after achieving first generation in late November.”
3. UTEP scientists capture first known photographs of tropical bird long thought lost
Tumblr media
“The yellow-crested helmetshrike is a rare bird species endemic to Africa that had been listed as “lost” by the American Bird Conservancy when it hadn’t been seen in nearly two decades. Until now.”
4. France Protects Abortion as a 'Guaranteed Freedom' in Constitution
“[A]t a special congress in Versailles, France’s parliament voted by an overwhelming majority to add the freedom to have an abortion to the country’s constitution. Though abortion has been legal in France since 1975, the historic move aims to establish a safeguard in the face of global attacks on abortion access and sexual and reproductive health rights.”
5. [Fish & Wildlife] Service Approves Conservation Agreement for Six Aquatic Species in the Trinity River Basin
Tumblr media
“Besides conserving the six species in the CCAA, activities implemented in this agreement will also improve the water quality and natural flows of rivers for the benefit of rural and urban communities dependent on these water sources.”
6. Reforestation offset the effects of global warming in the southeastern United States
Tumblr media
“In America’s southeast, except for most of Florida and Virginia, “temperatures have flatlined, or even cooled,” due to reforestation, even as most of the world has grown warmer, reports The Guardian.”
7. Places across the U.S. are testing no-strings cash as part of the social safety net
“Cash aid without conditions was considered a radical idea before the pandemic. But early results from a program in Stockton, Calif., showed promise. Then interest exploded after it became clear how much COVID stimulus checks and emergency rental payments had helped people. The U.S. Census Bureau found that an expanded child tax credit cut child poverty in half.”
8. The Road to Recovery for the Florida Golden Aster: Why We Should Care
Tumblr media
“After a five-year review conducted in 2009 recommended reclassifying the species to threatened, the Florida golden aster was proposed for removal from the Federal List of Endangered and Threatened Plants due to recovery in June 2021, indicating the threats to the species had been reduced or eliminated.”
9. A smart molecule beats the mutation behind most pancreatic cancer
“Researchers have designed a candidate drug that could help make pancreatic cancer, which is almost always fatal, a treatable, perhaps even curable, condition.”
10. Nurses’ union at Austin’s Ascension Seton Medical Center ratifies historic first contract
Tumblr media
“The contract, which NNOC said in a news release was “overwhelmingly” voted through by the union, includes provisions the union believes will improve patient care and retention of nurses.”
This and future editions will also be going up on my new Ko-fi, where you can support my art and get doodled phone wallpapers! EDIT: Actually, I can't find any indication that curating links like this is allowed on Ko-fi, so to play it safe I'll stick to just posting here on Tumblr. BUT, you can still support me over on Ko-fi if you want to see my Good News compilations continue!

The tribes, environmentalists and their allies celebrated the shrinking waters as an essential next step in what they say will be a decades-long process of restoring one of the West's largest salmon fisheries and a region the size of West Virginia back to health. Yurok tribal member and fisheries director Barry McCovey was amazed at how fast the river and the lands surrounding the Copco dam were revealed. "The river had already found its path and reclaimed its original riverbed, which is pretty amazing to see," he said. The 6,500-member tribe's lands span the Klamath's final 44 miles to the Pacific Ocean, and the Yurok and other tribes that depend on the Klamath for subsistence and cultural activities have long advocated for the dams' removal and for ecological restoration. Amid the largest-ever dam removal in the U.S., rumors and misunderstandings have spread through social media, in grange halls and in local establishments. In the meantime, public agencies and private firms race to correct misinformation by providing facts and real data on how the Klamath is recovering from what one official called "major heart surgery." But while dam removal continues, a coalition of tribes, upper Klamath Basin farmers, and the Biden administration have struck a new deal to restore the Klamath Basin and improve water supplies for birds, fish and farmers alike. ...
The Yurok Tribe also contracted with Resource Environmental Solutions to collect the billions of seeds from native plants needed to restore the denuded lands revealed when the waters subsided. The company, known to locals as RES, took a whole-ecological approach while planning the project. In addition to rehabbing about 2,200 acres of land exposed after the four shallow reservoirs finish draining, "we have obligations for a number of species, including eagles and Western pond turtles," said David Coffman, RES' Northern California and Southern Oregon director. ... The company also plans to support important pollinators like native bumblebees and monarch butterflies and protect species of special concern like the willow flycatcher. And, Coffman said, removal of invasive plant species like star thistle is also underway. In some cases, he said, workers will pull any invasives out by hand if they notice them encroaching on newly planted areas. ...
The Interior Department announced Wednesday that the agency had signed a deal with the Yurok, Karuk and Klamath Tribes and the Klamath Basin Water Users Association to collaborate on Klamath Basin restoration and improving water reliability for the Klamath Project, a federal irrigation and agricultural project. An Interior Department spokesperson said the agency had been meeting with river tribes and the farmers of the Upper Basin for the first time in a decade to develop a plan to restore basin health, support fish and wildlife in the region, and support agriculture in the Upper Basin. "We're trying to make it as healthy as possible and restore things like wetlands, natural stream channels and forested watershed," the spokesperson said. He likened it to keeping the "sponge" wetlands provide to store water wet. The effort is meant to be a cross-agency and cross-state process. The Biden administration also announced $72 million in funding for ecosystem restoration and agricultural infrastructure modernization throughout the Klamath Basin from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Act.

A Guide to AWS Regions and Availability Zones: Choosing the Right One for Your Workloads
Tumblr media
Amazon Web Services (AWS) provides a global cloud infrastructure divided into Regions and Availability Zones (AZs) to ensure scalability, reliability, and compliance. Choosing the right AWS Region and Availability Zone is crucial for optimizing performance, cost, and compliance for your workloads.
Understanding AWS Regions and Availability Zones
AWS Regions
An AWS Region is a geographically isolated location where AWS offers cloud services. Each region consists of multiple Availability Zones and is designed to provide low-latency access and data residency compliance. AWS currently has over 30 regions worldwide, each labeled with a standardized format like us-east-1 (North Virginia) or eu-west-1 (Ireland).
Availability Zones (AZs)
An Availability Zone is a physically separate data center within a region. Each region has at least two AZs, and some have up to six AZs. They are connected via low-latency networking but have independent power, cooling, and networking to ensure high availability and fault tolerance.
Factors to Consider When Choosing an AWS Region
1. Latency and Performance
Choose a region closest to your end users to reduce network latency.
Use AWS’s Global Infrastructure tool to check latency from different locations.
2. Compliance and Data Residency
Certain regions comply with local regulations (e.g., AWS GovCloud for the U.S. government, EU regions for GDPR compliance).
If your business handles sensitive data, ensure your chosen region meets legal requirements.
3. Service Availability
Some AWS services are not available in all regions.
Check AWS’s Regional Services List to confirm the availability of services you need.
4. Cost Considerations
AWS pricing varies across regions due to operational costs and demand.
Use the AWS Pricing Calculator to compare costs before selecting a region.
5. Disaster Recovery and High Availability
Utilize multi-region deployments for business continuity.
Use multi-AZ deployments for database replication and failover.
Best Practices for Using AWS Availability Zones
1. Deploy Across Multiple AZs
Use at least two AZs for production workloads to ensure redundancy.
Services like Amazon RDS, EC2 Auto Scaling, and Elastic Load Balancing allow multi-AZ deployments.
2. Implement Cross-Region Replication
Use Amazon S3 Cross-Region Replication (CRR) for high availability and disaster recovery.
Deploy AWS Global Accelerator to route traffic between regions in case of failures.
3. Optimize Networking Between AZs
AWS provides low-latency interconnects between AZs, but data transfer between AZs is billable.
Optimize Amazon VPC architecture to minimize unnecessary cross-AZ traffic.
Popular AWS Regions for Different Use Cases
Use CaseRecommended AWS RegionsLow-latency global appsus-east-1 (North Virginia), us-west-1 (Oregon), eu-west-1 (Ireland)GDPR-compliant workloadseu-central-1 (Frankfurt), eu-west-2 (London)AI/ML and high-performance computingus-west-2 (Oregon), us-east-1 (North Virginia)Disaster RecoveryDeploy across us-east-1 and us-west-2 or between different regionsFinancial services & complianceus-east-1, us-gov-west-1 (AWS GovCloud)
Final Thoughts
Selecting the right AWS Region and Availability Zone is essential for optimizing performance, compliance, and cost. Before choosing a region, analyze your application needs, compliance requirements, and service availability to make an informed decision.
By implementing multi-AZ and multi-region architectures, you can ensure high availability and fault tolerance for your workloads. If you’re unsure which region suits your needs, AWS provides region latency tests and cost estimators to guide your decision.

NASA scientific balloon flights to lift off from Antarctica
NASA's Scientific Balloon Program has returned to Antarctica's icy expanse to kick off the annual Antarctic Long-Duration Balloon Campaign, where two balloon flights will carry a total of nine missions to near space. Launch operations will begin mid-December from the agency's Long Duration Balloon camp located near the U.S. National Science Foundation's McMurdo Station on the Ross Ice Shelf.
"Antarctica is our cornerstone location for long-duration balloon missions, and we always look forward to heading back to 'the ice,'" said Andrew Hamilton, acting chief of NASA's Balloon Program Office at the agency's Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia. "It's a tremendous effort to stage a campaign like this in such a remote location, and we are grateful for the support provided to us by the U.S. National Science Foundation, New Zealand, and the U.S. Air Force."
This year's Antarctic campaign includes investigations in astrophysics, space biology, heliospheric research, and upper atmospheric research, along with technology demonstrations. The campaign's two primary missions include:
GAPS (General Anti-Particle Spectrometer), led by Columbia University in New York, is an experiment to detect anti-matter particles produced by dark matter interactions. The anti-particles stemming from these interactions in our galaxy can only be observed from a suborbital platform or in space, since Earth's atmosphere shields us from the cosmic radiation. GAPS aims to provide an unprecedented level of sensitivity to certain classes of anti-particles, allowing the exploration of a currently unexplored energy regime of the elusive dark matter.
Salter Test Flight Universal, led by NASA's Columbia Scientific Balloon Facility in Palestine, Texas, will test and validate long-duration balloon and subsystems, while supporting several piggyback missions on the flight.
Piggyback missions, or smaller payloads, riding along with the Salter Test Flight Universal mission include:
MARSBOx (Microbes in Atmosphere for Radiation, Survival, and Biological Outcomes Experiments), led by the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory, will expose melanized fungus, called Aspergillus niger, to the stratosphere's extreme radiation and temperature fluctuations, low atmospheric pressure, and absence of water—conditions much like the surface of Mars. Knowledge of how this fungus adapts to protect itself in this harsh environment could lead to the development of treatments to protect astronauts from high radiation exposure.
EMIDSS-6 (Experimental Module for Iterative Design of Satellite Subsystems 6), led by National Polytechnical Institute − Mexico, is a technological platform with experimental design and operational validation of instrumentation that will collect and store data from the stratospheric environment to contribute to the study of climate change.
SPARROW-6 (Sensor Package for Attitude, Rotation, and Relative Observable Winds—6), led by NASA's Balloon Program Office at NASA Wallops, will demonstrate relative wind measurements using an ultrasonic anemometer designed for the balloon float environment.
WALRUSS (Wallops Atmospheric Light Radiation and Ultraviolet Spectrum Sensor), led by the Balloon Program Office at NASA Wallops, is a technology demonstration of a sensor package capable of measuring the total ultraviolet wavelength spectrum and ozone concentration.
INDIGO (INterim Dynamics Instrumentation for Gondolas), led by the Balloon Program Office at NASA Wallops, is a data recorder meant to measure the shock, rotation, and attitude of the gondola during the launch, float, and landing phases of flight. Data will be used to improve understanding of the dynamics of flight and to inform the design of future components and hardware.
The remaining two piggyback missions are led by finalists of NASA's FLOATing DRAGON (Formulate, Lift, Observe, And Testing; Data Recovery And Guided On-board Node) Balloon Challenge, sponsored by the Balloon Program Office at NASA Wallops and managed by the National Institute of Aerospace.
The challenge was created for student teams to design, build, and fly an autonomous aerial vehicle, deployed from a gondola during a high-altitude balloon flight. The teams' student-built data vaults will be safely dropped from around 120,000 feet with the capability to target a specific landing point on the ground to manage risk. The missions participating in the Antarctic campaign are Purdue University's Purdue DRAGONfly, and University of Notre Dame's IRIS v3.
NASA's zero-pressure balloons, used in the Antarctic campaign, are made of a thin plastic film and are capable of lifting up to 8,000 pounds of payload and equipment to altitudes above 99.8% of Earth's atmosphere. Zero-pressure balloons, which typically have a shorter flight duration from the loss of gas during the day-to-night cycle, can support long-duration missions in polar regions during summer.
The constant daylight of Antarctica's austral summer and stable stratospheric wind conditions allow the balloon missions to remain in near space for days to weeks, gathering large amounts of scientific data as they circle the continent.

Is Anywhere Safe From Hurricanes? Exploring the 10 States With the Lowest Risk of Damage
Hurricane Helene has emerged as one of the deadliest storms in history, claiming at least 215 lives and leaving thousands unaccounted for. The devastation has stretched from Florida to Virginia, with around 730,000 homes still without power over a week after the hurricane struck.
A Year of Extreme Weather
Helene is just one of many natural disasters the U.S. has faced this year. The increasing frequency of extreme weather events, driven by climate change, is a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities many regions face. In 2023 alone, major storms have caused over $25 billion in damage nationwide. Floods have increased by 20% since 2000, and wildfires have intensified, with burned acreage up by 320% since 1996. These threats have heightened homeowner anxiety and driven up home insurance premiums, leading some in high-risk areas like Florida to forgo insurance altogether.
Regional Risks and Impacts
Different regions face unique environmental hazards. The West contends with wildfires, the Southeast with floods, and the South with extreme heat, which can warp structures and damage roofs. A 2024 climate risk study by Realtor.com found that extreme heat is spreading across the country, with cities like Austin, TX, Baton Rouge, LA, and Coral Gables, FL, being particularly affected.
Recovery Challenges
For homeowners in Helene's path, the next weeks and months will be focused on recovery. Many will find their insurance policies fall short in covering the necessary repairs and rebuilding costs, pushing them into debt. The hurricane has also raised concerns for those not directly affected: if such a devastating storm can hit unexpected areas, is anywhere truly safe from hurricanes?
Understanding Your Environmental Risk Score
Realtor.com economist Jiayi Xu explains, “Hurricanes present substantial challenges for homeowners, including property damage, increased financial costs, community recovery issues, and emotional stress. These factors can greatly hinder homeowners’ ability to recover and rebuild after a hurricane.” Xu suggests that opting for properties in states with lower hurricane risks can help alleviate these concerns. Realtor.com offers property-specific environmental risk scores to assess hazards like hurricanes and floods, helping prospective homeowners make informed decisions.
Low-Risk States
To determine the safest states, Realtor.com ranked regions based on the proportion of homes with the lowest hurricane, flood, or fire damage risk compared to those in high-risk areas. Using First Street Foundation’s wind factor scores and corresponding flood risk data, they identified states with the lowest risk.
While some regions face greater threats from natural disasters, others are significantly less exposed. Understanding these risks and choosing properties in safer areas can provide peace of mind and financial security.

Check The Azure VMware Solution’s Most Recent Features
Tumblr media
AVS Azure VMware Solution
With Azure VMware Rapid Migration Plan, you can save a ton of money while moving or expanding VMware environments to Azure quickly and seamlessly. You can also access 200+ Azure services.
Get a quick migration for workloads on VMware.
Select a migration solution that combines the greatest features of Azure and VMware on fully managed infrastructure for ease of use.
Extend or migrate to the cloud more quickly without the need for re-platforming, reworking, or re-hosting.
Make use of your current abilities and workflow. NSX, vSAN, HCX, and VMware vSphere are all part of the Azure VMware Solution.
Customers of Windows and SQL Server can receive unrivaled cost savings with free Extended Security Updates.
Take care of a range of use cases, such as capex challenges, cyberthreats, license issues, datacenter exits, and capacity requirements.
Benefits
Examine switching to the Azure VMware Solution
Relocation according to your terms
Either transfer cloud-ready workloads to Azure infrastructure as a service (IaaS) or migrate everything exactly as is to Azure VMware Solution.
Effectiveness
By switching to Azure VMware Solution, you can avoid overprovisioning, hardware updates, and decommissioning infrastructure expenditures.
Regularity
Boost IT efficiency by making use of the VMware resources and expertise that already exist.
Value addition
Give IT personnel more time to work on value-adding projects rather than maintaining on-premises software and datacenters.
Dependable
With VMware technology that is completely managed and maintained by Microsoft, you can achieve business continuity, reduced downtime, and fewer disruptions.
Creativity
With access to native Azure services and tools and a highly productive cloud platform, move more quickly.
It gives me great pleasure to present some of the most recent changes Azure has made to the Azure VMware Solution.
Currently, 33 areas provide Azure VMware Solution: More than any other cloud provider, AVS is currently available in 33 Azure regions. Since its introduction four years ago, we have been striving to support customers worldwide through geographic expansion. India Central, UAE North, Italy North, and Switzerland North were the most recent additions. See which region is closest to you by visiting the Azure products by region webpage.
The DoD SRG Impact Level 4 Provisional Authorization (PA) in Azure Government has now authorized the addition of Azure VMware Solution as a service: Azure Government in Arizona and Virginia currently offers AVS.
Increased compatibility with VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF): Customers of NetApp and VMware by Broadcom may now use NetApp ONTAP software for all storage needs, including consolidated and standard architectures, to streamline their VCF hybrid cloud platforms. In order to give NetApp storage systems running VMware workloads symmetric active-active data replication capabilities, the most recent version of ONTAP Tools for VMware (OTV) will offer SnapMirror active sync. By removing data protection from their virtualized compute and enhancing data availability, SnapMirror active sync enables users to work more productively. Study up on it.
New features for Azure VMware Solution: Spot Eco by NetApp with AVS reserved instances may now be used by clients to maximize the value of their deployments when they are expanding or relocating their vSphere virtual machines (VMs). Compute expenses can be greatly decreased by offloading data storage to Azure NetApp Files and managing AVS reserved instances using Spot Eco. Find out more about Azure NetApp Files.
Use JetStream with Azure VMware Solution to Improve Disaster Recovery and Ransomware Protection: Azure’s customers require comprehensive choices to protect their essential workloads without sacrificing application performance. Disaster Recovery (DR) and ransomware protection are major concerns for enterprises today. AVS provides cutting-edge disaster recovery (DR) solutions with near-zero Recovery Point Objective (RPO) and instant Recovery Time Objective (RTO) through partnerships with top technology firms like JetStream. By continuously replicating data, the JetStream DR and Ransomware solution delivers Continuous Data Protection (CDP).
Using affordable and high-performance storage choices like Azure Blob Storage, Azure NetApp Files (ANF), and ESAN-based solutions, it uses heuristic algorithms to detect data tampering through VMware-certified VAIO APIs. Compared to other products on the market that guard against ransomware by taking irreversible photos, Azure’s strategy is distinct. JetStream and Microsoft have collaborated to create a special feature that rehydrates virtual machines (VMs) and their associated data from object storage, enabling them to be deployed to AVS nodes that are provisioned on-demand, either with or without a pilot light cluster. In the case of a disaster or ransomware attack, this guarantees a quick, affordable recovery with little downtime.
The VMware Rapid Migration Plan is a comprehensive suite of licensing perks and programs that Azure just introduced. It will safeguard your price and help you save money when you migrate to Azure VMware Solution. If your needs change, you can shift the value to other types of compute by using Reserved Instances to lock in pricing for one, three, or five years. With Azure Migrate and Modernize services, you may minimize migrating costs. You can also receive special Azure credits for purchasing Azure VMware Solutions. Additional savings on SQL Server and Windows Server licenses might be available to you.

Why the Largest Data Centers in the US Are Core to Enterprise Expansion Strategies
As enterprises expand across digital and physical borders, the demand for seamless, secure, and scalable infrastructure has never been more urgent. Whether you’re a SaaS giant planning to enter a new market, or a Fortune 500 logistics company optimizing real-time analytics, the backbone of your growth is infrastructure. And in the United States, that infrastructure starts with the largest data centers in the US.
At DataCenterMart, we understand this inflection point better than anyone. We see first-hand how our partners and clients leverage data center solutions to unlock growth at scale. This blog explores why the biggest data centers in the US are more than just facilities—they're growth engines.
Global-Scale Capacity, National Reach
The largest data centers in the US are built with scale in mind. With over a million square feet of floor space, 100+ megawatts of power, and cutting-edge cooling systems, these facilities are designed to host the workloads of tomorrow. For enterprise clients, this translates to instant access to capacity, on-demand expansion, and the ability to deploy globally from a single point of control.
When an e-commerce platform needed to scale during peak holiday traffic, DataCenterMart helped them connect with a hyperscale certified data center in Virginia. The result? A 4x increase in compute power provisioned in under 48 hours—without lifting a finger internally.
Strategic Locations in Major Availability Zones
Growth isn’t just about space—it’s about proximity. The biggest data centers in the US are strategically located near major urban hubs, fiber optic routes, subsea cable landings, and power grids. This geographical advantage ensures low latency, regulatory compliance, and better redundancy.
Whether it's Northern Virginia, Silicon Valley, Dallas, or Chicago, US data centers located in these regions provide businesses with the best possible foundation for multi-region deployments and disaster recovery. Our marketplace simplifies how clients access these zones, offering full transparency on location benefits and connectivity profiles.
ESG and Sustainability for the Future
ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) initiatives are no longer optional for expanding enterprises—they are a core part of boardroom strategies. More businesses are seeking certified data centers that meet LEED standards, use renewable energy, and offer transparent reporting on emissions and energy usage.
The largest data centers in the US are leading the sustainability charge with innovative solutions like waste heat reuse, on-site solar, and modular cooling. At DataCenterMart, we actively vet our partners based on ESG performance, helping clients align their infrastructure growth with their sustainability mandates.
Resilience and Business Continuity
You can’t grow a business on shaky ground. That’s why enterprises prioritize data center solutions with built-in resilience. This includes everything from N+2 redundancy and dual power feeds to seismic-proof construction and geographically redundant availability zones.
Moreover, our clients benefit from robust data center management services—from proactive monitoring to white-glove deployment support. Whether you’re entering new markets or scaling up existing workloads, uptime and continuity are guaranteed.
Seamless Integration with Multi-Cloud and Edge
Growth is increasingly hybrid. Enterprises want to mix and match public cloud, private infrastructure, and edge computing nodes. The biggest data centers in the US are built to support this integration, offering high-density networking, API-level orchestration, and cloud onramps from AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud.
At DataCenterMart, we connect enterprises with US data centers that are already multi-cloud enabled and edge-ready. This allows companies to deploy containers in Miami, spin up VMs in Chicago, and run AI workloads at the edge in Los Angeles—all within one interconnected ecosystem.
Real-World Example: SaaS Company Scaling Nationally
One of our clients—a rapidly growing SaaS CRM platform—needed a way to scale into three new states while keeping latency low and compliance high. Through DataCenterMart, they were matched with two certified data centers offering high power density racks, direct peering with cloud providers, and on-site SOC 2 compliance officers. The deployment was complete in under three weeks, giving them the runway for 18 months of uninterrupted growth.
Why DataCenterMart?
Growth isn't just about having more servers—it's about choosing the right data center solutions for your business trajectory. At DataCenterMart, we bring deep industry insights, a network of the largest data centers in the US, and a curated platform that simplifies complex sourcing decisions.
We help your business move faster, scale smarter, and operate with confidence.
Discover how DataCenterMart can be your enterprise’s growth engine. Explore our marketplace today and source the most powerful data center solutions in the US.
