Ed Bradley

Edward Rudolph Bradley, Jr. (June 22, 1941 – November 9,2006) was an American journalist, best known for 26 years of award-winning work on the CBS News television program 60 Minutes. During his earlier career he also covered the fall of Saigon, was the first black television correspondent to cover the White House, and anchored his own news broadcast, CBS Sunday Night News with Ed Bradley. He received several awards for his work including the Peabody, the National Association of Black Journalists Lifetime Achievement Award, and 19 Emmy Awards.
Biography
Early life
Bradley was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His parents divorced when he was 2, after which he was raised by his mother, Gladys, who worked two jobs to make ends meet. Bradley, who was referred to with the childhood name of "Butch Bradley," was able to see his father, who was in the vending machine business and owned a restaurant in Detroit, in the summertime. When he was 9, his mother enrolled him in the Holy Providence School, an all-black Catholic boarding school run by the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament at Cornwells Heights, Pennsylvania. He attended Mount Saint Charles Academy, in Woonsocket, Rhode Island. He graduated in 1959 from Saint Thomas More Catholic Boys High School in West Philadelphia and then another historically black school, Cheyney State College (now Cheyney University of Pennsylvania) in Cheyney, Pennsylvania, graduating in 1964 with a degree in education. His first job was teaching sixth grade at the William B. Mann Elementary School in Philadelphia's Wynnefield community. While he was teaching, he moonlighted at the old WDAS studios on Edgley Drive in Philadelphia's Fairmount Park, working for free and, later, for minimum wage. He programmed music, read news, and covered basketball games and other sports.
Career
Bradley's introduction to news reporting came at WDAS-FM during the riots in Philadelphia in the 1960s. In 1967 he landed a full-time job at the CBS-owned New York radio station WCBS. In 1971, he moved to Paris, France. Initially living off his savings, he eventually ran out of money and began working as a stringer for CBS News, covering the Paris Peace Talks. In 1972 he volunteered to be transferred to Saigon to cover the Vietnam War, as well as spending time in Phnom Penh covering the war in Cambodia. It was there that he was injured by a mortar round, receiving shrapnel wounds to his back and arm.
In 1974 he moved to Washington, D.C., and was promoted to covering the Carter campaign in 1976. He then became CBS News White House correspondent (the first black White House television correspondent) until 1978, when he was invited to move to CBS Reports, where he served as principal correspondent until 1981. In that year, Walter Cronkite departed as anchor of the CBS Evening News and was replaced by the 60 Minutes correspondent Dan Rather, leaving an opening on the program that was filled by Bradley.
Over the course of Bradley's 26 years on 60 Minutes, he did over 500 stories, covering nearly every possible type of news, from "heavy" segments on war, politics, poverty, and corruption, to lighter biographical pieces, or stories on sports, music, and cuisine. Among others, he interviewed Howard Stern, Laurence Olivier, Subcomandante Marcos, Timothy McVeigh, Michael Jackson, Mick Jagger, Bill Bradley, the 92-year-old George Burns, and Michael Jordan, as well as conducting the first television interview of Bob Dylan in 20 years. Some of his quirkier moments included playing blackjack with the blind Ray Charles, interviewing a Soviet general in a Russian sauna, and having a practical joke played on him by Muhammad Ali. Bradley's favorite segment on 60 Minutes was when, as a 40-year-old correspondent, he interviewed 64-year-old singer Lena Horne. He said, "If I arrived at the pearly gates and Saint Peter said, 'What have you done to deserve entry?' I'd just say, 'Did you see my Lena Horne story?'"
On the show, Bradley was known for his sense of style. He was the first male correspondent to regularly wear an earring on the air. He had his left ear pierced in 1986 and says he was inspired to do it after receiving encouragement from Liza Minnelli following an interview with the actress. He is also thus far the only male 60 Minutes anchor to do so, though male correspondents from other network programs, including Jim Vance, Jay Schadler, and Harold Dow, later wore earrings on camera.
Personal life
Bradley never had children, but was married to Haitian-born artist Patricia Blanchet, whom he had met at a museum where she was working as a docent. Despite the age difference (she was 24 years younger than he), Bradley pursued her, and they dated for 10 years before marrying in a private ceremony in Woody Creek, Colorado, where they had a home. Bradley also maintained two homes in New York: one in East Hampton, and the other in New York City.
In the early 1970s, Bradley had a brief romantic relationship with Jessica Savitch, who at that time was an administrative assistant for CBS News and later became an NBC News anchor. After the relationship ended, Bradley and Savitch continued to have a non-romantic social and professional relationship until her death in 1983.
Bradley was known for loving all kinds of music, but he was especially a jazz music enthusiast. He hosted the Peabody Award–winning Jazz at Lincoln Center on National Public Radio for over a decade until just before his death. A big fan of the Neville Brothers, Bradley performed on stage with the bunch, and was known as "the fifth Neville brother". Bradley was also friends with Jimmy Buffett, and would often perform onstage with him, under the name "Teddy". Bradley had limited musical ability and did not have an extensive repertoire, but would usually draw smiles by singing the 1951 classic by Billy Ward and the Dominoes, "Sixty Minute Man".
Bradley died on November 9, 2006, at Mount Sinai Hospital, in Manhattan of complications from lymphocytic leukemia. He was 65 years old.
Legacy
Bradley was honored in April 2007 with a traditional jazz funeral procession at the New Orleans Jazzfest, of which he was a large supporter. The parade, which took place on the first day of the six-day festival, circled the fairgrounds and included two brass bands.
Columnist Clarence Page wrote:
Bradley had been a season ticket holder to the New York Knicks for over 20 years. On November 13, 2006, they honored him with a moment of silence. On the 60 Minutes program after Bradley's death, his longtime friend Wynton Marsalis closed the show with a solo trumpet performance, playing some of the music Bradley loved best.
In 1994, Bradley created the Ed Bradley Scholarship, which has since been offered annually by the Radio Television Digital News Association to outstanding aspiring journalists in recognition of Bradley's legacy and contributions to journalism.

William 'Cody' Anderson, broadcast legend, dies at 78 William “Cody” Anderson, who was a local broadcast legend and trailblazer, died Saturday, Feb. 20, 2021. He was 78. Anderson came to Philadelphia from Chicago in 1965. After his arrival, he began a broadcasting career that would span 50 years. He started in the sales department of WDAS Radio and quickly rose up through the ranks of management to assistant general manager, general manager and eventually president. Anderson’s love of music and his unwavering commitment to providing a voice for the voiceless made for an amazing combination. At a time of civil unrest and strife in Philadelphia, Anderson helped create an outlet for communities across the city. He was the originator of WDAS’ Unity Day which, at its height, brought together hundreds and thousands of people to celebrate. In 1989, Anderson realized his dream of radio station ownership when he purchased the iconic WHAT radio. He established an African-American talk radio format that elevated the voice’s of Philadelphia legends Mary Mason and Georgie Woods, and helped launch the career of Iyanla Vanzant. He is credited with raising the voices of individuals and communities across the city because he believed that no voice is special until it has been heard. His last foray into broadcasting was general manager of WURD 900 AM/96.1 FM, a station owned by the late Dr. Walter Lomax. Anderson helped to establish the station’s Black talk format, which continues to be the driving force of the station. Anderson was the co-host of “The Electric Magazine” with Vikki Leach on Saturday mornings. He was the co-host of bi-weekly Saturday morning shows with City Council President Darrell Clarke and Philadelphia Schools Superintendent William Hite. He also hosted the weekly Laborers Live show every Friday. On Dec. 4, WURD honored Anderson in a three-hour celebration during its annual Empowerment Expo. A statement from WURD’s President and CEO Sara Lomax-Reese regarding Anderson clearly highlights his efforts at the station. “It is with a very heavy heart that we acknowledge the passing of radio icon Cody Anderson. According to his family he passed peacefully on Saturday evening. Cody was instrumental in breathing life into WURD and shepherding it over our almost 20 years, first as general manager and most recently as a beloved host, mentor and friend,” Lomax-Reese said. “Like his biological family, the WURD family will miss him deeply. But we are grateful for his tireless and generous support of independent Black media, which he championed every day of his life, especially through his advocacy of WURD radio.” In 2000, Anderson formed ACG Associates, a consulting firm he operated with his sons Bill and Kyle. He brought his focus on empowering and informing people to his work at ACG and continued as the principal of the firm until the time of his death. Former WDAS radio personality Jerry Wells remembers Anderson’s vision, leadership, guidance and direction he provided for the staff during his days at the station. Under Anderson’s tutelage, Wells had one of the city’s most successful morning shows. “Cody was always from the beginning a very open, very accepting and very much a people person,” said Wells, who had a very popular radio titled “Morning Party” at WDAS FM (1974-86). “He put me to work in the news department, which I stayed there for nine months and then the departure of Rod Carson from WDAS FM. He went to WMMR. “He and Butterball (WDAS radio legend Joe Tamburro) called me in and told me they were giving me his program. The Morning Show 6-10 on WDAS FM. I did that program until 1986. Over that time, Cody impressed me with how much of a community-oriented people person he was and how much he took to heart the interest of our audience and the needs of our audience in the Black community. “He often said to me in Philadelphia Black people only have two (radio) stations and it was us and WHAT at that time. So, we have more of a job to do than the other stations can specialize in certain audiences. We have to serve entire families, multiple generations and we have to deliver so much to our community who ha so many needs. We were more of a family than a staff. He was more of a mentor and a friend than a boss.” Philadelphia City Councilmember Kenyatta Johnson remembered Anderson’s contributions as a broadcast legend and family man. “As the longtime leader at WDAS and WURD radio stations, he was an icon in the African American press. He always spoke truth to power. I will also remember Cody as a wonderful father and family man who was a role model to other fathers like me,” said Johnson in a statement. “He is a pillar in the Black community and his legacy and impact in the lives of Philadelphians will last forever.” In addition to being a Philadelphia radio legend, Anderson was an outstanding basketball player. He was the captain of the basketball team at Chicago’s Carver High School and led the team to multiple championships. His basketball talents earned him a full scholarship to Central State University in Wilberforce, Ohio where he met and fell in love with his wife, Verna. He was a star guard on the 1964-65 Central State University basketball team. Anderson led the Marauders to a NAIA championship and a undefeated season. The team was inducted into both the Central State Hall of Fame and the Ohio Basketball Hall of Fame. In 1991, Anderson was inducted into the Central State Hall of Fame Anderson was born in Denison, Texas on Feb. 25, 1942. He grew up in Chicago, Ill. He grew up in public housing with his parents the late Bernice and William Anderson, and his sisters Loretta, Barbara and Carol. Anderson is survived by his wife Verna, his children, Kyle, Bill and Theresa, his sisters Loretta, Barbara and Carol, his nieces Denise, Karen, Dana and his nephew Kevin, along with countless friends. He was a 33rd Degree Mason in the Prince Hall Masonic Lodge and a longtime member of the Canaan Baptist Church family. In a statement from the family, “Obituaries often speak of a person’s accomplishments, but our family wants you to know who our father was. He was a kind man with a gentle, compassionate spirit. He was dedicated and a loyal friend who was always available and fully present in his friendships. He was a man of unwavering faith in God and always saw the best in people. He was funny, creative, smart and giving. His love for his family was only exceeded by our love for him.” Source link Orbem News #Anderson #broadcast #Cody #Dies #legend #obituaries #William

Could Body Armor be Shipped Internationally?
Body shields may shield its wearer from gruff injury that may originate from shots, blades, or different weapons. A few items can likewise build security from blade assaults. The United States NIJ groups body shields and other ballistic things dependent on explicit rules to gauge the measure of security that it can give its wearer.
Under the NIJ (National Institute of Justice) level III and IV class, body guards need to watch the rules and laws set by the International Traffic in Arms Regulation (ITAR). Additionally, these things likewise need to keep the fare control laws of the nation. Any exchange or shipment of body protections going all through the U.S. without composed endorsement by the Department of State will be considered unlawful.
Prerequisites to Export Items
Things that have lower NIJ rating, including level II, level II-An, and level III, here and there have a fare permit exclusion in certain nations, in any case, as it isn't the situation for those keeping the standards from the Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS). For instance, the BIS requires trade licenses for explicit things, for example, ballistic shields, face shields, revolt shields, and kevlar protective caps.
On the off chance that you are to dispatch things from Level III and IV, the ITAR is the administrative body that deals with the limitations. Assume a U.S. individual wishes to send a military article globally to an unfamiliar individual. All things considered, the U.S. individual ought to present an approval demand from the U.S. Branch of State before encouraging the fare.
The U.S. individual, as expressed above, may have the remaining of:
A resident of the U.S.A.
An individual holding a lasting occupant status yet ought not work for an unfamiliar government element or a worldwide organization
A political asylee
A US government official
An agent for an association, enterprise situated in the U.S., and keeps the U.S. laws.
Then again, an unfamiliar individual is any individual who isn't in any of the classifications above and has an alliance with offices or associations under nations outside the U.S. It implies that an outsider who goes to the U.S. will remain as under an outsider status to trade body protective layers or other ballistic things inside or outside America. In this circumstance, a fare approval must be applied for endorsement before the shipment.
A fare approval has a few structures. It might be applied for a:
A FMS (Foreign Military Sales), wherein the United States government straightforwardly manages an unfamiliar government to sell military items.
A MLA (Manufacturing License Agreement). It permits an American producer to give data identified with military articles to unfamiliar substances.
A TAA (Technical Assistance Agreement). It allows a U.S. enlisted specialist co-op to gracefully military administrations to an outsider. It very well may be specialized help or preparing including U.S. innovation.
A WDA (Warehouse and Distribution Agreement. It is a goal to set up a circulation framework abroad to oversee sent out articles from the U.S. for future appropriation to affirmed domains.
What Can You Ship Overseas?
When in doubt, you can dispatch a Soft Armor, however not a Hard Armor. Why? It is on the grounds that the ITAR screens hard protective layers. Furthermore, they are extremely severe about the vehicle of such things.
To comprehend why the fare of hard protective layers is precluded, you ought to comprehend the fundamentals of these two sorts of body covering and why ITAR intently directs its utilization and transport.
Hard and delicate protection are the two basic sorts of body shield. Delicate rigging is worn under external apparel, typically a shirt or a military uniform. This sort doesn't repulse adjusts. Rather, it stops the slug through its weave to scatter the energy. Hence, it keeps the shot from arriving at the body of its wearer. On the opposite side, hard reinforcement is sturdier, thicker, and heavier. Its plan is to break the slug to disintegrate its energy and stop its course.
For instance, as the ITAR has command over the fare of level IV or III hard shield, it implies the vehicle of such things to any unfamiliar element, regardless of whether inside the nation or abroad, without composed approval from the Department of State is carefully not permitted.
Additionally, selling, development, transportation, or fare from the U.S. worldwide of any military articles confined without looking for approval from the supporting body, may start the recording of a felony and cause common punishments.
How to Ship Bulletproof Items Hassle Free?
Try not to stress. In the event that you are abroad, you can at present have your body reinforcement sent to you. There are even suppliers that can do delivering without muddled administrative work abroad. Global sellers, for example, the Blade Runner, EnGarde, Israel Catalog, PPSS Group, Protection Group Denmark, Safeguard Armor, and some more, can deliver their items worldwide with insignificant to no issues by any means.
Here are a portion of our mainstream brands and their top rated things that can be transported universally with no problem.
