David Enrich’s “Murder the Truth”

I'm on a 20+ city book tour for my new novel PICKS AND SHOVELS. Catch me in SAN DIEGO at MYSTERIOUS GALAXY on Mar 24, and in CHICAGO with PETER SAGAL on Apr 2. More tour dates here.
David Enrich's Murder the Truth: Fear, the First Amendment, and a Secret Campaign to Protect the Powerful is a brave, furious book about the long-running plan by America's wealthy and corrupt to "open up the libel laws" so they can destroy their critics:
https://www.harpercollins.com/products/murder-the-truth-david-enrich
Enrich is a veteran business reporter at the New York Times; he's reported extensively on high finance and sleaze, and has a knack for piercing the Shield of Boredom that protects finance crimes from scrutiny. His 2017 book The Spider's Web manages the nearly impossible trick of making the LIBOR-rigging conspiracy – which involved trillions, but in ways that were so baroque that hardly anyone noticed – comprehensible:
https://memex.craphound.com/2017/09/24/the-spider-network-a-novelistic-account-of-the-mediocre-rich-men-who-robbed-the-world-with-libor/
In taking on the libel-industrial complex – a network of shadowy, thin-skinned, wealthy litigation funders; crank academics; buck-chasing lawyer lickspittle sociopaths; and the most corrupt Supreme Court justice on the bench today – Enrich is wading into dangerous territory. After all, he's reporting on people who've made it their life's mission to financially destroy anyone who has the temerity to report on their misdeeds.
As such, Enrich's writing is extremely cautious, sometimes comically so, but always intentionally, in a way that highlights the absurd chilling effect his subjects are attempting to induce in all of us.
The book primarily concerns itself with the effort to overturn Sullivan, a 1964 Supreme Court case that established protections for media outlets that report on public figures and commit minor factual errors, provided that the errors were neither negligent nor malicious.
Since Sullivan, media outlets have held the upper hand when reporting on public figures. While Sullivan isn't a license to simply make stuff up about celebrities, politicians and business leaders, it does mean that if a reporter makes a minor misstatement, it's on the subject of the reporting to prove that the error was negligent and/or malicious.
Before Sullivan, most defamation litigation happened in state courts, and southern courts allowed lawmakers and cops to sue newspapers that reported on racial terror campaigns during the civil rights fight. The judgments involved were so large that many media outlets simply gave up on reporting on the intimidation, violence and murder taking place in the Jim Crow south.
True to form, Clarence Thomas has led the charge to dismantle a law that was key to the struggle for rights for Black people and other disfavored minorities. In Enrich's telling, Thomas's animus for Sullivan started during his confirmation hearings, when Anita Hill described his relentless sexual harassment of the lawyers who worked for him, including Hill. Being the subject of a media firestorm that painted him as a disgusting, cruel sex-pest seems to have inspired Thomas in a decades-long campaign to find a case that would let him tear down Sullivan, so that wealthy people could once again intimidate reporters into silence. Of course, Thomas's hatred for Sullivan only grew when Propublica revealed that he had taken numerous "gifts" from wealthy "friends" who had business before the courts, revelations that will forever make Thomas's name a synonym for corruption.
Enrich's cast of characters includes a clutch of whiny, ultra-rich axe-grinders, who finance (often in secret) lawsuits that are designed to chip away at Sullivan. Some are international looters or corrupt ex-Soviet oligarchs, but others are ideologues, committed to the principle of impunity for the powerful.
He also introduces us to the lawyers who wage these battles. As you might imagine, the kind of lawyer who sits up at night figuring out how to help wealthy, powerful people destroy their critics is often a crank themselves, with "colorful" personal relations that Enrich reports on with meticulous prose, including the many denials and non-denials his subjects sent when he sought comment.
As with his LIBOR book, Enrich does yeoman duty here unpacking complex matters that would be dull in a lesser writer's hands. The litigation strategies devised by Sullivan's enemies are always convoluted and are sometimes clever, much like the litigation strategies used to kill campaign finance limits (Citizens United) and abortion rights (Dobbs). Indeed, many of the financiers, think-tanks and lawyers behind those plots are also would-be Sullivan slayers.
The best of these legal gambits are actually rather clever – locating innocent people who've been genuinely wronged by Sullivan (as the saying goes, "hard cases make bad law") and then using them to undermine Sullivan, without actually helping them in any way. It's positively fiendish.
We're in a moment when a lot of powerful people are getting far more powerful, and abusing that power to commit wildly corrupt acts. The only way we'll know about this is if the press can freely report on their misdeeds. Murder the Truth is a vital guide to the next Citizens United, the next Dobbs – a campaign to take away your right to know about the next assault on your rights that plutocrats will launch.

Is actor Michael Sheen the right person to rescue Welsh theatre?
Can one star save Welsh theatre? On a spring morning in Cardiff’s Wales Millennium Centre (WMC), 180 people are thronging for the answers. We’re in the Awen bar next to the gorgeous 1,900-capacity Donald Gordon theatre, which last summer staged the hit play Nye, about NHS founder Aneurin Bevan. This experience inspired its lead actor, Michael Sheen, to set up the new Welsh National Theatre (WNT), as he tells us today, scruffy-bearded and check-shirted, bouncing around a much smaller, makeshift stage. “Listen,” he says, responding to an apology for this stage’s minuteness, “I’ve acted in Aberavon shopping centre, so I’m used to being on anything.”
Sheen’s latest venture arrives after a hell of a few months, as we Welsh people say, for English-language theatre in Wales. In December, the Cardiff-based National Theatre Wales (NTW – a separate organisation, founded in 2009) closed down, stripped of all Arts Council funding. In January came a cross-party Welsh Senedd report, A Decade of Cuts, revealing Wales ranked second to bottom for cultural spending in Europe (at £69 per person, above only Greece; by comparison, the UK received £91, neighbouring Ireland £149 and poll-toppers Iceland £691).
Creu Cymru, a body representing performing-arts organisationsacross Wales, published an even gloomier sector snapshot, underlining “the consistent devaluing of arts and culture through cuts to public funding, and the absence of obvious advocacy at a public and political level.” The Arts Council of Wales has since announced an extra £4.4m for arts and culture in the country, but redundancies and threats of closure to venues remain rife. Which raises the question: is Sheen’s advocacy enough?
In 2016, I moved back to my native Wales, where Sheen is embraced like a national hero. Today, his energetic persona – part everyman poet, part political orator next door – is undeniably infectious. He announces the theatre’s programme: a Wales-set, touring co-production of Thornton Wilder’s Our Town, which inspired Dylan Thomas’s Under Milk Wood; and Owain & Henry, a WMC-staged epic about Owain Glyndŵr’s battles with Henry IV. But do his plans help or hinder other theatre-makers in a bold, diverse, modern Wales? And can the WNT quieten murmurings of concern among some figures in the industry?
To begin at the beginning: English language theatre in Wales doesn’t just happen in Cardiff, a city only two hours from London (although though it also hosts the award-winning Sherman theatre, acclaimed pub venue The Other Room, and dynamic companies such as Hijinx, Taking Flight and Theatr Iolo). In the south Wales valleys are the RCT Theatres, and going west, there’s Milford Haven’s producing theatre, the Torch, Neath’s innovative company Theatr na nÓg and busy hubs such as the Aberystwyth Arts Centre, whose summer season attracts 6,000 people every year.
Heading north, there’s Bangor’s Pontio, and one of Wales’s premiere producing theatres Theatr Clwyd in Mold, which reopens this summer after three years, following a £50m capital development project part-funded by the Welsh government. Recent successes include Laura Wade’s Olivier award-winning play Home, I’m Darling (starring Katherine Parkinson) and 2019’s rapturously received community production The Mold Riots.
For full disclosure, I’ve been working with Theatr Clwyd this year, interviewing staff, volunteers, locals, actors and directors about its profound legacy within the small town. One retired brickmaker, Philip Jones, brought me all his 1980s programmes and told me how he fell in love with new storytelling. “The theatre stopped me being a bigot, it stopped me being a racist – it changed my life.”
A musical, a community-created play and a debut by Welsh writer Chris Ashworth-Bennion all feature in Theatr Clwyd’s opening season under new artistic director Kate Wasserberg. Sheen spoke to her in March. “He was very curious, wanting to help,” she says, “and refreshingly honest about his using his fame for good, going, ‘Would it be helpful if I was in that play?’” He is also excited by artists that he discovers, she adds. “But, of course, it’s early days, so getting to know each other is really important.”
Projects running in partnership already thrive across the country, according to an Arts Council of Wales report published last week. These include Craidd (meaning “core” or “heart”), a project bringing theatre to deaf, disabled and neurodivergent people, and Open Book, offering theatre freelancers fully paid shadowing work. NTW’s community-focused project Team also continues as a stand-alone entity – and despite being criticised for staging too few productions, and using non-Welsh writers and directors to make plays about Wales, NTW did have some notable successes, including 2011’s three-day epic The Passion, starring Sheen.
On the day of the WNT launch, Sheen announces they are receiving £200,000 from the Arts Council of Wales, transition funding from the closure of NTW. Later, I speak to the council chair, Maggie Russell. “The Welsh National Theatre is a bold new initiative and an exciting addition to Wales,” she says. “Michael has stated he’s looking for a wide variety of funding sources, and we’re really excited about him working in partnership.”
On with the show. Sheen introduces his new company in turn, including Nye writer Tim Price and TV producer Russell T Davies, who directed Sheen in a production of David Copperfield at the West Glamorgan Youth Theatre in 1987. (“That was a real turning point for me,” Sheen says, “when I started to take it seriously.”)
Four new plays have also been commissioned from emerging writers from diverse backgrounds. They include Francesca Goodridge, a working-class director from Swansea, who studied acting at Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts after working in a call centre for six years. Frustrated by the lack of good parts for young women, she created the musical Shout!. Azuka Oforka, an alumna of the Sherman theatre’s Unheard Voices programme, is also a recent signing. Her hit play The Women of Llanrumney, a drama set on a Welsh-run Jamaican sugar plantation, is currently receiving rave reviews at the Theatre Royal Stratford East.
Down the corridor in a separate studio, I chat to Owain & Henry playwright Gary Owen about the historic lack of opportunities to present Welsh stories on a large scale. (Owen talks about the volume of Welsh monodramas, such as the recently revived Iphigenia in Splott, “Because monologues are cheap!”) People wonder why there’s never been “a Braveheart for Wales”, he says. “We need to fill that gap.”
Then I get my five minutes with Sheen – under spotlights, after he’s done the rounds for TV. I ask him if he’s been concerned that the WNT might be seen as a vanity project. He begins, carefully: “It’s a balance at first to use whatever resources we have now. One of the resources I have is a celebrity profile, to bring all these people here today to listen and set up co-productions.” He smiles his megawatt smile. “Although the co-production model is also useful because we haven’t got any money!”
He talks passionately about his youth theatre days. After that came Rada, West End theatre, films including The Queen and Frost/Nixon, and TV roles in Masters of Sex, Good Omens and Quiz – not bad work for a boy from Port Talbot. He took that free training for granted, he says: “My pathway has disappeared, but I want people to have even more opportunities.” He also talks about the importance of connecting Wales geographically (“touring is a big priority … we must remember mid Wales and west Wales”) and confirms that his theatre won’t be bilingual. He says that his first chat was with Steffan Donnelly, artistic director of the Welsh-language national theatre, Theatr Cymru (Theatr Cymru, the Welsh language national theatre, already exists.), adding: “There’s already fantastic work going on in Wales on a small and mid-scale. We want to be able to support and work in collaboration with that.”
A day after the launch, I’m contacted by a seasoned theatre professional who wishes to remain anonymous. Creu Cymru, the performing arts body whose gloomy snapshot of the industry I mentioned earlier, began its annual conference in the WMC corridors an hour after the WNT launch ended, they say. What did the WNT contribute, I ask? “Nobody from it turned up,” they reply.
This professional doesn’t doubt the “right intentions” behind Sheen’s project, and “the brilliant theatre-makers” within it, but also worries there’s “a lack of awareness” of the mentoring and development going on “every single day” across Wales. “And a new entity has just landed, with a Hollywood star fronting it, bestowing a national name upon themselves – and they’re asking for money. That’s a real worry.”
They also make another intriguing point: “If the theatre had called itself the Michael Sheen theatre, no one would mind.” It’s early days, but Sheen’s status as a national lodestar will be monitored closely, not least by the many creatives who make Welsh theatre thrive.

One of the things I really enjoyed about the Three Body Problem trilogy was how Cheng Xin, despite of being one of the most objective wholesome and goodly characters of the series she managed her actions turned to be the ones more polarizing and controversial and even at some point "incorrect" at the point that a big part of the fandom keeps acting like if she was some kind incompetent idiot, when in reality she was just... an engineer who ended being chosen as the one in charge of one of the most fucked up defense mechanisms made by humans.
The fact that Cheng Xin "failure" defending Earth is because she took serious her ethics instead of it being a product of some moral failure, is something I loved and it hurt me as reader when she realized how wrong she had been for acting "right". Probably if someone like Thomas Wade had been the one taking a fucked up option instead of her I would be like "damn that's sad but it was bound to happen ¯\_(ツ)_/¯". But fandom act like if having a characters taking wrong choices by right reasons are stupid as if we could not end doing something like that in our daily life.
Like, no wonder why sometimes popular media chicken outs about making an authentically morally ambiguous female characters who are not antagonists or give a powerful female character a moment of objective failure; fandom can't even deal with a "nice" woman failing due keeping her ethics in place.
90% of the fandom failed to pay attention to the last 100 pages of the series.
(spoilers ahead)
Cheng Xin "fails" to save the solar system. But that's not where the book ends. There's 100 more pages.
We learn a lot about the universe in those 100 pages. But by that point, most of the fandom is too angry with Cheng Xin. So they don't read the ending carefully.
Cheng Xin chooses to return her micro-universe's mass to the main universe. She does this due to her sense of duty and ethics. This is the same sense of duty that informs all her decisions throughout her life. Sophon greatly admires Cheng Xin for her choice and her sense of duty and ethics.
In the ending, just over 1 million civilizations made it into micro-universes. That includes Earth civilization, galactic humans, and Trisolarans. Cheng Xin is the lone representative of Earth civilization at the end of the universe. And she does her part to save the universe. She rejects survival inside the micro-universe and embraces the chaos and danger of the aging main universe.
The first axiom of cosmic sociology is that survival is the primary need of civilization. Remember what Wade tells Cheng Xin? "If we lose our humanity we lose a lot. But if we lose our bestial nature, we lose everything." A civilization can survive eternally within a micro-universe. What would happen if it was Wade at the end of the universe instead of Cheng Xin? I think it's obvious. He would remain in the micro-universe and destroy the main universe.
Cheng Xin's act only returns the mass of 1 of millions of micro-universes. But Cheng Xin is quite the influential figure for both Trisolarans and galactic humans. However, how can she influence anyone while she's in a micro-universe? Well, Sophon is there. Sophon says that it's impossible to transmit information into the main universe. But the Trisolaran micro-universes are designed and programmed by Trisolarans. Maybe there's a way to transmit from one Trisolaran micro-universe to another. And the Trisolarans put Sophon in there with Cheng Xin! Sophon says Cheng Xin's universe was designed specifically for her. It's the smallest micro-universe they ever designed. Trisolarans were obsessed with humanity, Yun Tianming, and Cheng Xin. I know they'd want to watch Cheng Xin in her micro-universe. I'm sure they found a way to do that.
So Cheng Xin's choice might have been transmitted to all the Trisolaran micro-universes. But what about galactic humans? Well, it's implied that Trisolarans may have conquered many galactic humans. And they may have put them in Trisolaran micro-universes. So it's possible that two civilizations saw Cheng Xin's choice.
Cheng Xin's choice shows that at the end of the universe, cosmic sociology is no longer helpful. Survival is no longer the right choice. Duty is the right choice.
Returning mass to the main universe would've been impossible for Wade. He couldn't Return. He could only Advance.
Hopefully, there are thousands of Cheng Xins from various civilizations at the end of the universe. And hopefully, there are no Wades.

Cold Water Swimming
Last week’s blog was about dopamine and the other feel-good brain hormones.
This week’s attempt to increase production of said hormones has involved cold water swimming, which I can confirm is really, really cold.
Exposure to cold water can double dopamine production, in the same way as alcohol and other drugs. But without the crash which comes soon after the consumption of drugs.
Meaning the dopamine high can last for hours after diving in rather than about 15 minutes as is the case for alcohol, with diminishing returns for every drink thereafter.
Living right next to a loch, I have easy access to cold water (and lots of it), so I walked down to a rocky beach and jumped in. Or rather, waded in and forced myself to submerge, then quickly sprint-waded out because it was absolutely freezing.
The University Challenge Review
www.quizposting.com
It’s hard to self-assess changes in doapmine level, but it definitely feels good. We had another go in a river yesteday, and I’ve been taking cold showers too (but only because our hot water has been broken).
I wonder if higher dopamine levels would help with quizzing. A quick dip to clear the brain and then off to the pub quiz (you’d have to forego the booze, though, or you’d lose the benefits).
Oriel and Durham faced off in the Grand Final of 2000, with Durham running out victors to the tune of 325 to 125 (quite the demolition).
Durham also won Paxman’s final series, in 2023, while Oriel’s sole triumph came in 1966. Durham first won in 1977, meaning that their next title will be 2046, if the trend is to continue.
Here’s your first starter for ten.
Nash loses five points for Durham with an incorrect buzz of Lisbon — Taseen picks up the pieces for Oriel with Toledo and they take two bonuses on colour. Wittgenstein is the answer to the one they miss (I’m aware that this is not a colour), and they are quite ridiculously denied the points due to a minor mispronunciation of the name.
In what proved to be a very tight game, I was worried this might come back to be important.
Brookfield-Pertusini brought Durham back into positive figures with Annie Ernaux. Ancell, who I think looks like the comedian Simon Amstell, took another starter for them next time out, answering very confidently.

Sharkey hits back for Oriel with Cavendish, and they retook the lead thanks to Armstrong’s buzz of Spike Lee.
They took a hat-trick on the British Indian Ocean Territory, which has been in the news recently as the UK has returned sovereignty of the island cluster to Mauritius.
Back and Forth
Roberts tied the game with bones, and the lead changed hands once again thanks to Brookfield-Pertusini’s knowledge of the Iliad. It is now Durham’s turn to lose points thanks to mispronunciation, but in this case it is more understandable, as they gave St Bride instead of St Brice.
Ancell takes the music starter, and Brookfield-Pertusini recognises one of the bonses as being from the opening to The Royal Tenenbaums, which helps her teammates to find the correct answer, Ravel, though she didn’t know it herself. Excellent conferring.
Durham are now 60 points clear, but Armstrong reduces this with Oriel’s first points in about 5 minutes. Refractive Index gives Armstrong a second consecutive starter, and he takes a third with Thomas Jefferson.
Rajan allows them the points despite the fact one or more of his teammates had actually given the answer at the same time.
I think this was fair enough, as Armstrong, who had buzzed, did give the answer too, but it was definitely on the line.
Even More Back and Forth
Taseen, who had joined in on Thomas Jefferson, takes the next starter, snatching the lead back for Oriel, who are on a 75–0 run.
This is ended by Ancell with Hokusai, and Durham are now winning.
Not for long — Armstrong steals it for Oriel.
Not for long — Roberts ties the game for Durham.
Not for long (in this case it couldn’t be anything other than ‘not for long’, as whatever happened next the tie would be broken, but I’m ramping up the tension with the whole ‘not for long’ thing. Tension which has now been dissipated by this explanation, drat!) — Sharkey nudges Oriel in front.
They take two bonuses, giving them 20 points of breathing space, which Roberts looks to exploit with a brave, early buzz of alto on the next starter.
Unfortunately for Durham the answer is tenor, and Armstrong sweeps this up, winning the match for Oriel.
Oriel 200–165 Durham
The final gap of 35 points belies how tight this match was, as Oriel exacted some manner of revenge for the 2000 final. Durham will probably return as high-scoring losers though, which is no more than they deserve.
I’m glad that the Wittgenstein mispronunciation didn’t come back to bite anyone because that would have been brutal.
Next week we have another Oxbridge derby as Exeter, Oxford, take on Christ’s, Cambridge — see you then.

Feeling a little bit better and more sane today. Dominic and I agreed that Thomas needs to be put down next week. It will need to be Tuesday because I have doctor appointments for both boys on Monday. Wild and very weird to schedule my pet's euthanasia around our busy schedule. It's hard to wrap my mind around euthanizing a cat who's still eating, but end-stage renal failure is irreversible. He doesn't feel well, and he will never feel any better than he does right now, only worse.
I've been pretty focused and productive the last two days, but today I can't seem to get it together. It's fine. I'm always reminding myself I'm not a machine; I'm human. I made a dermatologist and haircut appointment. I ate some yogurt with granola and an apple. I sent an email that needed sending. I got dressed.
I'm dreading it, but I'm going to very gingerly wade into my course planning for both classes. Draft schedules. Maybe set up a framework in each of my Canvas sections that I can flesh out later. Starting on this will help me stop panicking about it. I panic about course planning at the start of every semester, but this semester is worse. It's probably because I never really got a break. I went from a hectic spring semester right into a summer of traveling and solo-parenting right into the fall semester. No wonder I feel crazy.
I'm going to go for a walk. I thought about trying to go for a run, but I think what my body and brain need today is a walk.
If there's time, I'm also going to throw away or donate at least half of my shoes. I've been hoarding all these worn-out old shoes that I will never wear again, and there's no room for them. All they do is sit jumbled at the bottom of my tiny closet and collect dust and cat hair.
I need someone to pat me on the back and tell me it's going to be okay lol. Actually, writing this Tumblr post is me patting my own back and telling myself it's going to be okay.

Put On Your Raincoats | Blue Ice (Marshak, 1985)

This is another film in the Film Noir genre that I watched because it’s Noirvember, the month in which we watch films in the Film Noir genre, but I have to lean less heavily on technicalities because this is a lot closer to the real deal in that there’s a genuine private detective element, plenty of sinister characters and even a femme fatale. As far as the protagonist goes, Herschel Savage ranks below my favourite porno private dicks, lacking the streetwise swagger of Wade Nichols in Punk Rock and sarcastic charm of Ras Kean in Expose Me, Lovely. But he has a nice reactive quality to his performance, looking convincingly weary and dumbfounded to the insanity around him. The fact that he isn’t especially forceful as a presence works in his favour here.
As far as sinister characters go, this one has Nazis as the villains so it does pretty well in that department. You get Helga Sven doing a pretty good knockoff Ilsa routine, and some non-pornographic help from the likes of Reggie Nalder’s pockmarked face and Richard Bulik’s teeth gnashing. And as far as the femme fatale goes, you get Jacqueline Lorians playing varying degrees of mysterious and sympathetic to keep you guessing. A lot of the narrative potency of the movie depends on her specific allure, and I must say that the movie cheats to make me like her by putting her in a cape, although it undoes some of that goodwill by cutting to newsreel footage of Hitler. This is directed by Philip Marshak, who also directed Dracula Sucks, and while both movies have similar levels of production values, this hangs together much better as a genre-inflected porno. There’s some pretty nice style here, particularly in the later sections when we get some frosty and hazy lighting, as well as the blue phantasmagoria of the conclusion when the movie goes off the deep end. It definitely delivers on the title, is what I’m saying.
And as a porno, while this is shot on film, the visual style feels informed by the SOV productions that were taking over. I’m thinking in particular of the scene between Herschel Savage and Danielle in a sauna, where the handheld camerawork has a looseness and fluidity that feels closer to something you’d get with a video camera, not to mention the use of dissolves. And as far as the sex goes, I will put it delicately that the Boingoingoing factor is quite strong with this one. The Nazisploitation element lends itself to certain exploitative framings, but for the most part it eases off the sexual assault, and the particular dynamics of these scenes, with male and female characters teaming up on another female character, on top of the fluid visual approach, make them feel more, uh, dynamic than these things often can be. It’s a credit to the strength of the first of these scenes that the cutaways to Reggie Nalder reaction shots don’t undo its power. It probably helps that Helga Sven is rather forceful in these scenes, although I did find it weird that the one act of explicit sexual torture she performs is giving a handjob and blowjob to Paul Thomas, who for some reason is covered in bloody scars. Maybe all the really bad stuff happened offscreen, but it wouldn’t have killed the movie to throw in some whipping.
The only bad sex scene here is the one where Savage’s sex worker roommate Shanna McCullough is raped by Ron Jeremy. There are the obvious reasons why it’s unpleasant (rape and Ron Jeremy are two terrible flavours that go terribly together, although the movie at least acknowledges how off putting Jeremy is as a presence). But even on a narrative level if feels totally superfluous. If you wanted to throw in a rape scene, there are more organic ways to do it in a thriller (and indeed, the movie has a similar such incident later, even if it doesn’t actually show the rape). There’s an interesting character moment after the scene concludes (which includes not just the rape but attempted karate by Ron Jeremy; this is not the first Ron Jeremy karate scene I’ve witnessed), but I think the movie would have been better off without it.

Fay Grim (Parker Posey) is having a bad day: Her husband is missing, her brother is in prison, and her son is about to be kicked out of school. Soon this will look like one of the better days. Fay Grim is another of Hal Hartley's ventures into subverting a genre, particularly the espionage thriller. But it's also filtered through another genre, one you might call "the Sandra Bullock movie." At least I call it that because it brought to mind the last Sandra Bullock movie I saw, The Lost City (Adam Nee, Aaron Nee, 2022), in which she plays a woman who gets swept up into an unexpected adventure. Bullock is not the only actress who lands in that kind of film, but she's been the prototypical heroine of them since her breakthrough movie, Speed (Jan de Bont, 1994). In Fay Grim Posey fits the part as well as or even better than Bullock. It's nominally a sequel to Henry Fool (1997), in which Hal Hartley introduced us to Fay, her brother, Simon (James Urbaniak), and the enigmatic Henry Fool (Thomas Jay Ryan). All you need to know from that film is that Fay and Henry had a son, Ned (Liam Aiken), and that Simon went to prison because he helped Henry flee the country to avoid a murder rap. Now, an Agent Fulbright (Jeff Goldblum) from the CIA is suddenly in touch with Fay to see if she knows the whereabouts of the notebooks Henry kept. He claimed to be writing a sort of confessional novel that publishers had told him was unpublishable. Henry is dead, Fulbright tells her, but the notebooks may have significance no one has previously suspected. And so begins an elaborate chase that takes Fay to Paris and Istanbul, and involves Simon (whom she gets sprung from prison) and Ned (who receives a mysterious clue in the mail), as well as a lot of intelligence agents and terrorists from all over Europe and the Middle East. Fay Grim becomes as intrepid as Jason Bourne or James Bond in the process. Posey's performance holds it all together and makes me wonder why she's not as big a star as Bullock. It's fun to see some of these characters again, but by wading so deeply into spy spoof territory Hartley has lost the control that made Henry Fool such a fresh new start for his career, and some of his recently acquired mannerisms -- like the tilted camera, the so-called "Dutch angle" -- are tiresome.

All of these are credits to the crew with a few references to the games. Yes I spent a few hours researching this because I was curious if the names actually meant anything. I've put everything I found from my research under the cut.
The "Gun" Poster:
Teresa Beach: Wardrobe crew for costumes
Liam O'Brien: We all know him from doing voices in the Fallout New Vegas, 4, and 76. However, since this is could be seen as a reference to the games this is a different Liam O'Brien. He is in fact the tailor. Entirely coincidence that he shares a name with a well known VA for the games.
Billie Jo Fisher: Tailor
---------------
The "Valley of the Gun" Poster:
Stuart Rodgers: Standby crew for the grip (It's not on his IMDB but he is in the "All Cast & Crew" section of the Fallout (Prime) IMDB page.)
Amy Westcott: Costume designer
Wade Sullivan: Wardrobe shop supervisor and background costume supervisor
---------------
The "Under the Covers" Poster: (Some of these were hard to read from the small text)
Kelly Trivigno: First assistant accountant
Abby Coon: Second assistant accountant
Pat Hammer: Accounting clerk
Yvette Irizarry: Accounting clerk
Emma Reed: According to the Fallout Wiki they were a pre-war actor and they're mentioned in 76. There's two Reeds, one of them is listed as Evan in the credits but no Emma. Evan Reed is a second assistant accountant.
Jean Pellegrinelli: As with Even, they were a pre-war actor and they're mentioned in 76. There's a Jim Pellegrinelli in the credits but no Jean. Jim Pellegrinelli is a second assistant accountant.
Araceli Leal: First assistant accountant
Michael Auszura: Set designer
---------------
The "The Man from Calabasas" Poster:
James Kent: Prop buyer and Assistant property master
Grace Villa: Set decoration production assistant
Robert Campbell: Camera a and b operator
Dan Caplan: Storyboard artist
Kim Winther: Series casting
Bruce McCleery: Volume Director of Photography
---------------
Finally The "A Man and his Dog" Poster:
Keith McKinney: A character that appears in the Fallout 4 DLC Far Harbor. He is a robobrain as of the games and Fallout (Prime)
I couldn't find anything for Andrea King, Isabella Carmela, Riley Rue, Joshua Thomas, Christopher Bremer, or Delores Grover.

The article “Ron Zonen and Thomas Mesereau Offer Their Opinion on Wade Robson” explores the contrasting perspectives of two key legal figures from Michael Jackson’s 2005 criminal trial—prosecutor Ron Zonen and defence attorney Thomas Mesereau—regarding Wade Robson’s testimony and subsequent allegations of abuse. Drawing from a 2019 Vanity Fair interview, the piece uses their divergent views to highlight the complexities of interpreting courtroom behaviour and the broader implications for public understanding of the case.
Ron Zonen, who prosecuted Jackson on behalf of Gavin Arvizo, is unequivocal in his belief that Robson lied under oath in 2005 when he denied being abused. Zonen recalls that the prosecution team was convinced Robson had been a victim of long-term sexual abuse and that his demeanour on the stand—marked by visible discomfort—reinforced their suspicions. He describes Robson’s testimony as that of someone “answering questions falsely” and asserts that the prosecution had “no doubt” he was lying to protect Jackson.
In stark contrast, Thomas Mesereau, Jackson’s lead defence attorney, offers a glowing assessment of Robson’s performance. He explains that he deliberately chose Robson as his first witness because of his unwavering support for Jackson. Mesereau describes Robson as articulate, intelligent, and sincere, and insists that Robson was adamant in his denial of any inappropriate conduct by Jackson. From Mesereau’s perspective, Robson’s testimony was a cornerstone of the defence’s case and a testament to Jackson’s innocence.
The article cautions readers against taking either lawyer’s opinion at face value. It argues that both men were operating within the constraints of their professional roles—Zonen as a prosecutor seeking conviction, and Mesereau as a defence attorney aiming for acquittal. Their interpretations of Robson’s testimony were inevitably shaped by their strategic objectives. The piece suggests that lawyers, by nature of their profession, often present selective narratives that serve their client’s interests, and that their retrospective commentary should be viewed through this lens.
Furthermore, the article critiques the tendency of pro-Jackson documentaries—such as Square One and the forthcoming Taj Jackson project—to present figures like Mesereau and defence investigator Scott Ross as impartial arbiters of truth. It argues that these productions rarely include voices from law enforcement or independent experts, instead relying on individuals with vested interests in preserving Jackson’s legacy.
In conclusion, the article underscores the importance of critical thinking when evaluating legal commentary, especially in high-profile cases involving celebrity figures. It posits that while both Zonen and Mesereau offer valuable insights, their perspectives are ultimately shaped by their roles in the adversarial legal process. The piece encourages readers to seek a more balanced understanding by considering a wider range of sources, including those outside Jackson’s inner circle.

"Revisited"Greater Bethel Apostolic Temple/Dedicated to Mother Mildred B...
"FINAL EDIT & COLOR CORRECTIONS NOT SHOWN ON PRODUCTION" Apostle THOMAS WESTLEY WEEKS, SR. "The Pastor With a Vision" of New Destiny Fellowship, Wilmington, Delaware and Inspirational Mentor to Great Spiritual Leaders Apostle Thomas Wesley Weeks Sr. is the pastor ànd founder of New Destiny Fellowship (formerly Greater Bethel Apostolic Temple) located in Wilmington, Delaware. In the early beginnings of the church, Apostle Weeks, being led by the Holy Spirit, along with his very faithful wife, Dr. Leona Brown Weeks, founded the church in May 1980. The opening services were held at the Radisson Hotel (now DoubleTree by Hilton) in downtown Wilmington. Apostle Thomas Wesley Weeks, Sr. was born July 14, 1945 in Boston, Massachusetts to the late Bishop Thomas J. Weeks and late Evang. Susan Wade Weeks, who were both ministers of the Gospel. Apostle Weeks' journey with Christ all began in November 1958, when God filled him with the precious gift of the Holy Ghost at the tender age of thirteen years old, while attending services at his father's storefront church. His parents immigrated from Montserrat, British West Indies and relocated to Boston, MA, where they founded Bethel Tabernacle Pentecostal Church in 1958. As a young man, Apostle Weeks was a man with a vision and became the Assistant Pastor of his father's church. After the founding of his own church, Apostle Weeks' family has remained extremely supportive and instrumental in the development of all of his endeavors. In the early days, his father's church was known as " Mother Bethel," while his church was called "Greater Bethel."

My American politics professor said that one of the most lasting things in politics is not the president's policies, but the justices they put in place.
William Douglas was put in place by FDR, one of the youngest judges to serve, and lasted 36 years. When he entered office, propeller planes were everywhere, Hitler was a nerve-wracking extremist, and we still had segregated water fountains. When he left office, Ford was in charge, we had probes passing Jupiter, the Cold War was thawing in a variety of ways, and Civil Rights had passed. He was also quite progressive as I understand it, helping to pass a lot of rulings, including Roe v Wade, was an environmentalist, and opposed to Vietnam.
Think about that time difference. And how influential this man was and still is. Now, Clarence Thomas was nominated by Bush the first, not the second, and he's served for 32 years. Think about how long that is, and who nominated him. Think about the politics of 1991 vs 2023. There's gonna be some big changes there.
I am no fan of Biden's. The point is that these justices are often the product of presidents decades earlier, many of whom are dead! Care about the truth, if you please.
It is extremely disturbing how many posts I see claiming that Roe v. Wade was overturned on Biden's watch and blaming him and the Democratic Party for it. It's disturbing on a number of levels.
First, it was Trump and Bush-appointed justices who handed down the Dobbs decision. This is a flagrant example of blaming Democrats for things Republicans did, and not coincidentally is one of the the most widely felt differences between the two parties. As a result, it's usually the first example Democrats and their allies point to; this misappropriation suggests a deliberate attempt to undercut that fact.
Secondly, and related to the first point, it obfuscates who the real enemy is, and I am comfortable using word "enemy" to describe the Republican Party because of the policies they advocate and enact. The truth is that states controlled by the Republican Party were where the effects of Dobbs are most severely felt, while states controlled by the Democratic Party are passing laws to protect abortion. It is important to know which party opposes abortion and which party supports it. If the Republicans gain control of the House, Senate, and White House, they will pass a national abortion ban, as they have done at the state level in several places.
Thirdly, blaming Biden for Dobbs demonstrates a very concerning lack of understanding of how the government functions. The judiciary is its own branch of government; judges are appointed by the president and confirmed by the senate. It doesn't matter who is president when a decision is handed down, it matters who was president when the justices were appointed. People sometimes react to this by moving the goalposts and claiming the real issue was a failure by Democrats to "codify" Roe v. Wade. I am not sure what "codify" means in this context, and I'm not sure they are either. One thing it does not mean is that congress can pass a law saying "abortion is legal forever." Republicans could easily repeal such a law and it the federal government cannot necessarily prevent states from restricting abortion at the state level. Roe v. Wade was a ruling stating that the constitution guaranteed a right to privacy, which included the right to have an abortion. This prevented abortion restrictions in a way federal law cannot. That doesn't mean passing federal law protecting abortion is a bad idea, but it isn't a foolproof protection. It's fair to argue that the Democratic Party and the left of center generally were complacent about abortion. The form of this complacency was not taking the courts seriously, while the right spent fifty years openly filling the courts with anti-abortion judges.
The last thing that worries me is that this is popping up phrased almost the exact same way all over the place. I am afraid that it is not merely incompetence, but intentional misinformation, that is then repeated by the incompetent who believe it.
I know some will probably dismiss this post as being from a "vote harder" liberal Biden supporter, but whatever your feelings about Biden, the Democratic Party, or the democratic process in the U.S., you should care about the truth. The truth is that Roe v. Wade was overturned by Republican-appointed judges and abortion bans are being enacted by Republican elected officials, and Joe Biden opposes these things. You can do with that information whatever you wish, but you denying it is dishonest.
