Hermes being the only one not to sing "wait for me, I'm coming" along with everyone else during Wait For Me Reprise but joining in with "show the way" and their solo lines always hurts because the lines Hermes does sing are instructional — they can tell Orpheus how to get out of Hadestown and let him know exactly how to succeed — but the lines they don't sing are the ones full of hope.

"Wait for me, I'm coming" is Eurydice, the workers, and Persephone reaching for a happy ending, and Hermes can't join in with that because they know it doesn't come.

There’s plenty of beautiful poetic language and clever wordplay in Hadestown, but I adore the way it celebrates simplicity. There’s so much contained in very, very simple lines. The anguish of “Orpheus, I’m hungry.” The devotion and exhaustion of, “No, I walked. A long way.” And, of course, “Wait for me. I’m coming.” Maybe not surprising that this is a show where the song that has the potential to heal the world has the lyrics, “la la la la la la la.” And they don’t just work - they’re transcendent. “There were no words for the way that you felt, so you opened your mouth, and you started to sing.”

Thinking about how in Hadestown, yes Orpheus and Eurydice are cursed by the narrative but Hermes is too. Even more so I would argue. Time and time again, they have to watch these two fall in love and lose each other and there is nothing they can do to stop it.

It is clear from Come Home With Me, that Hermes raised or helped to raise Orpheus as their own. He's like a son to them, and they're even very protective of Eurydice. I don't know how any other Hermes plays it off, but Melanie La Berrie always looks to Eurydice for her blessing, wanting permission to tell the story again. Despite how it seems sometimes, they care and love for these two deeply. They want their story to be told. They want that happy ending for Orpheus and Eurydice.

During Epic III, Hermes can't help but look absolutely devasted when handing Orpheus his lyre/guitar because they know that even though he succeeds in fixing Hades and Persphone's relationship and bring the world back into tune, he'll lose his whole world again with just one moment of doubt.

No matter how many times they tell Orpheus what needs to be done and how to do it in Wait for Me (Reprise), it's never enough.

It will never be enough.

Orpheus will always turn, losing Eurydice.

Orpheus and Eurydice may be cursed but Hermes is cursed with remembering.

How to get to Hadestown, you’ll have to take the long way down

Y'know I really thought I'd use the og cast's song to do a Hadestown reference but there's something about this one that hits right.

Based on Zevlor's letter from the epilogue with a dash of relationship lore. Strap in fellas.

Zevlor actually pushes Vera back after the hug illustration and encourages her to press on without him despite her pleas come with.

She understood he probably needed space after everything. So despite the tears and the ache in her chest she reluctantly lets him go. Fully expecting to talk to him when the Kethric battle was finished. But no, he practically vanishes without a trace and she's livid.

Skip to the final battle when all the allies are gathered. She see him again for the first time in weeks and all the hurt comes back. She has good heart but a mean stubborn streak so it takes Karlach's (our resident emotionally intelligent queen's) convincing to encourage her to get some closure, assurance, anything. This might be the end of the road afterall.

They finally get to talk and all it takes is an apology for her to forgive him. She knows he means it, hurt people hurt others and he still showed up when she needed him most. Despite her anger she missed him more than anything.

Trying to stay there to the canon while having my way, lol.

When I say WIP I might do line work and maybe come single color backgrounds but it's 26 frames already that's 26 illustrations for 24 seconds. ANIMATORS HOW DO YOU DO IT?!?
