"The slogan 'refuse, reduce, reuse, repair and recycle' provides us with a hierarchy of strategies for dealing with waste. Refuse means to decide not to engage in the consuming action or task in the first place because it is not necessary. Reduce means to minimize the materials and energy required or the frequency of the consuming action. Reuse means either reuse for the same purpose or put to the next best use. Repair means to use skill and very limited additional resources to restore function. Recycle means to break down into more basic elements or materials before being reprocessed for the same or other uses."

Suggestion of a crafting resource for people to look for in their communities because I didn't know it existed near me and others may not know to look for it!
There's a place in my town called a creative reuse center that is dedicated to reducing material waste and making art materials accessible to the community. The way it works at mine is they take material donations from customers but also from local businesses getting rid of excess materials and other stuff and sell it at a reduced cost. Here they sell some individually priced items, but most of it is by weight at $2/3 per pound. And literally it could be anything you may need for any type of project. There's fabric, yarn, thread, paining supplies, office supplies, old books and magazines for collaging, poster board, paper, and then just like random items that could be used in different projects like cds, corks, empty spools, cardboard tunes, leather, cigar boxes, literally anything.
I got all of this vintage tatting and mending thread (plus some dmc) for literally less than 50 cents the other day.
Tumblr media
I saw someone recently who was a teacher walk out with four full grocery bags of crafting supplies for her students for about $40.
At this one they also host community events and classes which I haven't gotten the chance to attend yet but I'm looking forward to it!
Like I said this was something I didn't even know to look for until I came across it mostly by chance, so if you are looking to reduce your crafting waste by buying second hand or lower costs or looking to get rid of and donate some supplies maybe check to see it there's something like that near you!

So I have this thing I wanna do that's been kickin around my head for a while, but I'm not sure how to go about it.
I want to make a "usable trash" depot in my area. This would involve a warehouse type building along with a fenced outdoor area where people can bring or send stuff that would normally go to the landfill but is still usable for *someone* and folks can come look through it and take what they want/need. Volunteers would sort it into sections (plastics, wood, metal, glass and ceramic, fabric/thread/yarn, electronics, etc) to make it easy to find what you are looking for (because people won't use it if it's too much of a pain in the ass).
I've repurposed broken tile, construction scrap, tiny bits of scrap fabric, all kinds of stuff. Whether for art, utilitarian purposes, or both, these are things being used rather than wasted. That's the goal, that possibility made easily available.
Acquiring volunteers and getting the word out, that I have a handle on. Organizing the setup and the management part I know how to wrangle.
Here's what I don't know how to accomplish:
This would have to be a charity type setup. I don't know how to get funding for the building and the land, nor ongoing expenses like utilities.
Finding out what types of licensing/permitting/insurance would be required
Registering the charity and handling taxes properly.
If anyone has some links or advice for me it would be so appreciated. I'm in the US so info would need to be applicable to US laws.
Also if anyone wants to implement this idea on their own in their area, no objection from me and no credit or anything needed. For all I know this exists in every state but mine lol. I just don't know what terms I would search to find out. TIA!

This dried fruit tea is weirdly good and now I'm like, should I be dehydrating all my fruit scraps for tea? Probably.

*spins the wheeel* and today's breakdown is..... yet again over unethical consumer choices especially in the economical north ! sure no ethical consumption under capitalism but harm reduction is a thing so have you considered the reasonably priced vegan/local/no packaging/recycled packaging option or can you get that thing secondhand or made or recycled material-

I've been starting to patch up my clothes instead of giving them away or throwing them out. Cause I hate fast fashion shit, and I think it looks cool
But I patched my first sock today and I'm weirdly proud of it
