Ingress : I hate this f****** game!
Tumblr media
This week as part of my Interactive Media course, I had to play Ingress – an augmented reality game - and write about my experiences.  I think the title sums up my experiences!
After one of my classmates mentioned something about lots of terms and conditions, I was uncomfortable with the idea of signing up.  I started reading through the terms and conditions and then gave up and just clicked accept terms. I was also annoyed that I had to download the app for this game and had to enable location tracking so that I could play. This is because I value my privacy.  At this point I was already tired with the game having partially read through the terms and conditions.  So I decided to come back to it another day.
Another day: It was around 6pm, and dark and freezing cold outside.  And I am sat in front of warm fire with my cat :-).  I log back into Ingress and this time, I am mildly intrigued as it is working.  It’s connecting my location and tells me a parcel is going to be delivered etc.  At this point I stand up and think, this is going to be easy, and that the game will give me a location option to walk to a room in my home.  I was annoyed and unimpressed that the two locations I could choose were outside as I did not fancy going out into the cold dark night just to collect some computerised, non-existent (physically speaking) package.  So I decided it was game over for tonight.  I decided I would try it when I was outside the next day.
Tumblr media
Next day:  I decided try Ingress again on my way to Napier University. Outside, the app told me that I needed to use mobile data!  I am a low data user and really only mostly use my phone for phone purposes and did not want to use it so was annoyed and unimpressed.  But as I am determined and persistent, I decided to log in using Eduroam wifi when I got to the University.  However, this time it gave me no locations!  As I didn’t want to be late to class, I stopped faffing around with Ingress, signed out and decided I would try it near my home on my way home.
Later that same day: I am trying to navigate and concentrate on crossing the road without getting knocked over at a set of traffic lights, while pressing buttons on my Ingress app and resentfully – using my mobile data – just to try the game briefly. As I manage to survive getting across the road without getting knocked over, I wait for the same two locations to come up but this time it gives me a new location in the opposite direction.  I am really annoyed at this point and press cancel on the new location several times.  I then had to stand next to Haymarket train station before this location option came up. And when it did I chose it and it started coming up with messages about joining enlightened side and introducing a character.
Tumblr media
At this point, after losing the will to live and surviving crossing the road, simply to get to a location to meet a computerised character and be given a message – I decided my mission was accomplished and that was enough. I am not feeling enlightened and I am going to delete the app.  Over and Out!

Niantic’s latest AR features add realism to Pokémon Go
Niantic is adding augmented reality features to Pokémon Go that should make the blending of animation and the real world seem more realistic. While Pokémon Go seems like a simple mobile game, it’s so popular and generates so much revenue that the company can invest heavily in AR technology.
These updates will create more realistic AR experiences and continue the company’s efforts toward building the 3D map of the world, said Kjell Bronder, senior product manager at Niantic, in a blog post. The new AR features will roll out to select Pokémon Go players over the next few week with Samsung Galaxy S9, Samsung Galaxy S10, Google Pixel 3, and Pixel 4 phones, with more devices being added in the near future.
Reality blending

Reality blending will let your Pokémon look better in the real world. Pokémon will be able to hide behind a real object or be blocked by a tree or table blocking its path, just like you would see a Pokémon in the physical world.
As Pokémon Go has grown throughout the years, players have been able to photograph, walk, and play with their AR monsters.
Pokémon Go players can now contribute to the 3D map of the world
Above: This character is occluded by a real-world wall.

Since Portal Scanning launched in Ingress, agents have scanned hundreds of thousands of points of interest for inclusion in building the 3D map for games and future apps. Niantic is now bringing this opt-in feature to the Pokémon community today with PokéStop Scanning. Scanning will be first available to Pokémon Go Level 40 Trainers in early June before rolling out to more players (by level). Pokémon Trainers will be able to contribute to building 3D maps of their favorite PokéStops and Gyms by walking around their favorite public places and recording a stream of images with their phone.
Techniques such as blurring potentially recognizable objects like faces or license plates are automatically applied to information that Trainers choose to send to Niantic. Niantic does not collect or store any personal data in connection with this information and it is not tied to specific player accounts, Bronder said.
These images allow Niantic to generate dynamic, 3D maps of PokéStops and PokéGyms which will improve the game’s AR experiences overall. A machine-readable, 3D map of a place gives devices (current mobile phones and future headsets), a better understanding of all the depth and the complexities of the real world.
This will let Niantic tie virtual objects to real-world locations and provide Pokémon with spatial and contextual awareness of their surroundings. For instance, this awareness will help Snorlax find that a patch of grass to nap on or give Clefairy a tree to hide behind.
Turning these people-generated points of interest from 2D images into a dynamic, 3D digital map of the world sparks the evolution of mapping from utilities traditionally oriented around transit (streets and walkways) to more meaningful and valuable location-based information oriented around people’s interests, Bronder said.

STUDIO - WEEK ONE & TW0
PROPOSAL
To design an AR app of zoo animals, specifically designed and based around Auckland Zoo, in the hope of them furthering it as an education tool. Users are the animal - either giraffe, lion or elephant and they are interacting with the animals habitat - feeding, drinking, playing, cleaning etc. Information will appear while the game is being played to educate the user, specifically designed for intermediate students - 10 to 12 years old.
This marketplace has potential as it hasn’t been utilized before for education and interactivity. The end goal for this is to create a fully immersive experience that allows uses to develop a larger understanding of animals and their environments in a playful way.
Other Zoo AR games are available on the market however none are from a first person narrative, where you are the animal.. Most of the games / interactivities are you as a “third person” and you are interacting with the animal.
The idea of creating an augmented reality is a little daunting because I do not have any prior skills or knowledge in this field. It is important to take on difficult challenges and overcome the obstacles in order to learn and grow, however, right now it looks very unrealistic. I think I also lack confidence in my own ability to create such a project, which may be an internal obstacle I will have to overcome to create this project.
DEFINITIONS
To give myself a better understanding of AR, I googled the definitions.
Augmented Reality
- A technology that superimposes a computer-generated image on a user's view of the real world, thus providing a composite view.
- Augmented reality is an interactive experience of a real-world environment where the objects that reside in the real-world are "augmented" by computer-generated perceptual information, sometimes across multiple sensory modalities.
Methodology
- A system of methods used in a particular area of study or activity.
- The methodology is the systematic, theoretical analysis of the methods applied to a field of study. It comprises the theoretical analysis of the body of methods and principles associated with a branch of knowledge.
BENEFITS
Auckland Zoo get an interactive education tool
- Technology has become such a large education tool that using this for a good purpose to educate everyone about the species at the zoo through a fun initiative will draw people into the zoo as well as grow knowledge.
We learn a new skill
- Augmented reality is a field we are not entirely familiar with and therefore need to develop the skills and research in order to create and develop a product of value.
Enriched way of telling a story / educating
- The use of AR in education brings about enriched ways of teaching, through powerful visual models. Visual models help bring to life educational concepts and the learning process. AR enriches stories and brings about better educational interactions and in the long run results in better and improved understanding of educational concepts.
Multi-sensory learning
- The use of AR in education enhances the mental and physical dexterity of students. AR gives students the ability to see, observe, hear and feel at the same time while learning. This combines the three learning styles - Visual, Aural and Verbal increasing one’s ability to take in knowledge and understanding. In the long run, this results in increased sensory development.
Increase in memory
- AR stimulates better learning processes through scanning. This creates a larger robust learning cycle which in the long run improves the retainment of knowledge. It also increases the imaginative prowess of people in the learning process, growing their imaginative and thinking ability. Improving imagination results in improving and increasing memory.
I enjoy researching into why doing such things are important to create more purpose for the project and have a better understanding of why everything works how it does.
POTENTIAL OBSTACLES
Time Restraints
- With only 10 weeks to complete this challenge we have created, it might be beneficial to scale the project down to 3 animals per se to allow us to create a project we are happy with and can develop over time.
Learning AR
- To go for a beginner in AR design and development to creating a project worth displaying to the public won’t be possible without the help of external companies such as Meaningful Technology and Pepper Creative. These companies have both agreed to help us get started and develop our idea with tutorial help on basic AR development.
Miles and I are taking on a lot for two very novice AR develops which could be detrimental to the outcome of the project.
RESEARCH
Pokemon Go
- Pokemon Go is an AR mobile game developed and published by Niantic for iOS and Android devices. It is derived from an earlier AR project created by Niantic called Ingress. It uses mobile devices GPS to locate, capture, battle, and train virtual creatures.
ARrrrrgh
- ARrrrrgh is an AR mobile game also, developed on Unity software both of us have had small amounts of interaction with as well as ARCore software. It uses the mobile devices GPS also to play ‘hide and seek’. Your surroundings turn into quest territory, where you place and seek out treasure boxes with gold.
Beer Pong AR
Beer Pong AR is an all-time classic AR game, developed also on Unity and ARCore software. You place the cups in an area based off the GPS and swipe balls into the cup. This game is multiplayer and has challenges and rewards to increase play. (It’s like beer pong, just without the mess).

Pokemon Craze Sparks Search for Pirate Maps, Crashed Alien Craft
Tumblr media
Mapbox Inc., the provider of maps for customers including Evernote and the Washington Post, felt Pokemon Gos impact the very day the monster-hunting game launched in the U.S. last month.
Inquiries from game developers poured in even though Mapbox wasnt behind the smash hit. One asked for a dark theme for night-time fighting, another for a pirate map with locations marked in old-school cursive script, Chief Executive Officer Eric Gundersen said in an interview. A publisher wanted to know all the city parks large enough to house a crashed alien spaceship.
The spike for us was overnight, an entirely new demographic of map users, Gundersen said. What a crazy month we had since the launch of Pokemon. Ive talked to more than a dozen major gaming outlets in the past few weeks.
The runaway popularity of the app where users roam real world places in search of virtual pocket monsters has focused developers on the potential of enriching game content with on-location data. Executives at Electronic Arts Inc. and Ubisoft Entertainment SA have expressed their admiration for Pokemon Go and said they are working on their own titles that include elements of augmented reality, or AR.
Tumblr media
A demonstration of the Mapbox plugin for Unity game engine.
Source: Mapbox Inc.
There is going to be a flood of augmented reality games going forward, said Serkan Toto, founder of consultant Kantan Games Inc. There were other AR games before, but until now no one in the industry paid any attention.
They are now. Game developers are looking for custom maps that not only fit the specific aesthetic of their game, but also become part of the brand, Gundersen said.
Mapbox offers a free web-based software editor, described by Gundersen as Photoshop for maps, that lets users change color schemes with just a few clicks. It also offers minute control of how roads, bridges, parks and other features appear. That allows Le Monde to deliver maps in French and the Financial Times in its signature pink.
The startup, which is based in San Francisco and Washington, D.C., is now looking to bring that flexibility to games. Mapbox is working on a plugin for Unity, software used in about 30 percent of the top 1,000 grossing mobile titles.
This is not about designing a game level anymore, its about having a full representation of the world baked into your game, Gundersen said. Thats an entirely new concept.
The technology behind Pokemon Go comes from Niantic Inc., whose founder John Hanke helped lay the groundwork for Google Earth. In 2012, Niantic created Ingress, in which opposing teams capture portals based on real-world landmarks. The company grew its database by allowing players to submit popular locations. These portals were later reborn as Pokemon hot spots.
That level of real-world granularity is what elevates the game above simple maps and navigation, making it particularly compelling, Toto said. And when the context doesnt fit, like when a water Pokemon spawns nowhere near a body of liquid, the illusion is just as easily broken, he said.
Likewise, Mapbox offers more than just pretty maps, Gundersen said. The company is constantly refining and updating its maps by tapping into the anonymous data streams of its customers. Every time someone creates a memo in Evernote or pins a restaurant on Pinterest, a Mapbox server is pinged. Combined, that data can provide important context for game companies. That can amount to more than 100 million miles of data in just a day.
The same tools we used to identify a traffic jam, now allow us to say these are the best hours in this park when there are people, he said. We have the raw metadata, we know where people are walking and when.
Gundersen founded Mapbox in 2008 as a data visualization contractor in Washington. The company worked for the United Nations and World Bank to help doctors map malaria outbreaks and support development projects in places such as Afghanistan, Nigeria and Somalia.
Over the years, it painstakingly stitched together a map of the world relying on proprietary and public data sources. One of its major contributors is OpenStreetMap, a project whose maps are created and updated by users around the world, much like Wikipedia.
Things changed dramatically when Google started charging customers for its maps about 4 1/2 years ago. Within months, Mapbox launched its own product and won its first major account — Foursquare Labs Inc. Gunderson last year raised $53 million in Series B funding round led by DFJ Growth and his company now has 170 employees.
Our server infrastructure looks like the world waking up in the morning, Gundersen said. Now that gaming is expanding on mobile and meets with AR, the infrastructure that weve built up is in massive demand.

Modojo Rewind: Rewind Harder
It's been a fortnight since the last song of the Modojo Rewind was sung, and in that time we've been absolutely inundated with reveals and announcements for games that are planned to release for the Nintendo Switch. We're loving it, of course — the Switch is all the system that we've been wanting from Nintendo and more. That's not to say that there haven't been any new developments in the mobile gaming world, of course, it's just that we're so excited about Big N's success that we can't help but shout our admiration from the rooftops.
Fortunately, Modojo is here to get everyone up-to-date on the biggest reveals in mobile and portable gaming in a smooth and streamlined fashion. Get cozy, friends, it's time for the Modojo Rewind.
Mobile Remix To Ignition
There's been a lot of exciting news to come out of the mobile tech and gaming realm in the past weeks, so we're going to dive right in. First off, Rayquaza and more Gen 3 Pokemon have landed in Pokemon Go, which is certainly great for players driven to catch them all. Pokemon Go also recently earned a new trailer, the likes of which is narrated by none other than Stephen Fry. Beyond that, Pokemon Go developer Niantic has also acquired augmented reality tech startup Escher Reality, hopefully in an attempt to make the upcoming Ingress reboot all the more awesome.
youtube
Modojo ally Brittany Vincent has been spending time with Final Fantasy XV: Pocket Edition, and she's happy to report overall positive experiences with the mobile-focused remake of Square Enix's hit RPG. Capcom has news on a similar front as well, as Street Fighter IV: Champion Edition, the mobile-oriented remake of the full-console title, is finally coming to Android devices. For players looking for an all-new experience, however, Annapurna has also revealed the release date for Florence, the upcoming mobile title from designer Ken Wong's new development studio Mountains.
Those who are looking for some hot new mobile hardware got a rare chance at an early deal, as Huawei Mate 10 Pro preorders opened up with substantial discounts already set in place, saving buyers up to $200 in some cases on a brand new handset. And though the fiscal pun segue may be lost on some, Tencent has announced plans to bring hit mobile MOBA Arena of Valor into the esports arena with its new Los Angeles-based World Cup competition.
While we're on the subject of hot mobile games, Nintendo has also revealed their next smartphone-compatible title. It's called Mario Kart Tour, and aside from the obvious kart-racing shenanigans, we don't know much yet about the title, except that it should be releasing sometime in 2019.
Drowning In Switch Games
There's just so much Nintendo news these days that it's hard to keep things focused. Naturally, we're still going to do our best. Kicking off the news is word of Flipping Death, the platforming and puzzling title from developer Zoink Games that will be getting a physical release on both PlayStation 4 and the Nintendo Switch. The strikingly-designed 16-bit styled platformer Fox N Forests is coming to Nintendo Switch too, which should be a delight for those retro-minded platforming enthusiasts.
youtube
This flood of announcements continues with TorqueL: Physics Modified Edition, the box-rotating indie puzzler from developer Nanmo, which will soon be landing on the Nintendo Switch. Another is upcoming title Puzzle Puppers, the puzzle title that sees slinky canines stretching around the environment in order to secure snacks. Those who once owned or still own a Wii U will also be excited to hear that developer Wales Interactive has teamed up with Brainseed Factory to bring puzzle platformer Typoman to Nintendo's hybrid handheld.
We love hearing that so many games are coming to the Switch, and we apparently aren't the only ones. A couple of internet sleuths have uncovered statistics that reveal how the Switch library has grown so rapidly that it's managed to triple the size of the Wii U library in the same amount of time. We knew that the Switch was successful, but it certainly warms our hearts knowing that Nintendo is back in top-tier form.

Firstly, Rayquaza and more Gen 3 Pokemon have landed in Pokemon Go, which is certainly great for players driven to catch them all.
