Maar na zoveel jaar kruipt het bloed toch waar het niet gaan kan. Nadat we twee dagen de Zittauer Schmalspurbahn hadden bezocht, gingen we door naar Dresden. Daar werd als eerste de Lössnitzgrundbahn bezocht, gevolgd door de Weißeritztalbahn. En tenslotte werd de Fichtelbergbahn bezocht. Na deze Saksische smalspoorlijnen gingen we naar de Harz, waar de HSB werd bezocht. Deze dag was er ook een afscheidsrit georganiseerd van de Mallet locs (99 5906), maar daar hadden we geen dienstregeling van. Hoe dan ook, onderweg in het Selkethal en de tussen Nordhausen en Wernigerode zijn we deze loc enkele keren tegengekomen, naast de 99 6001. de 99 234 en de 99 7245. Gelegen an der Werra und umgeben von sanften Hügeln des Werratals, hat diese Stadt eine Fülle an kulturellen Schätzen, Geschichte und einer einladenden Atmosphäre zu bieten.

Remixing the Speaker in Dreams - The Mystery

Part 1 of the Speaker in Dreams is a mystery centering around the cult known as Those Who Hear. The cult has taken up residence at a bookstore in West Hill called The Reality Wrinkle. This will be our funnel point that the adventure will lead to.

The entry point for the party is Encounter 4 - "The Fair Gets Foul" where they are attacked by the aforementioned wererats. From there the party is supposed to ask around town until they figure out what is going on.

The Gather Information checks lead them to three separate locations. This makes our clue-making a lot easier. We can provide three clues right off the bat, similar to the rumors they can get in the text. Each of the locations will have three clues, two pointing to the other two locations, and one pointing to the Reality Wrinkle.

I want to make the Shrine of Heironeous play a more prominent role. Some hints about the Blessed's real identity could be a lot of fun, especially for a paladin or knightly-oriented player.

Our clue structure immediately opens up our path through the adventure. The players could almost go straight to the Reality Wrinkle and skip out on the other locations, but then it would be them taking the initiative. The goal here is not to use all of our content, it is to put our players in the driver's seat.

Let's modernize the Gather Information check for the average 5e player, and make sure they get at least two of these rumors.

So far, we have followed the adventure pretty closely and the party has just dealt with a few wererats. Assuming they don't kidnap one or follow it (which will lead straight to the Bell Tower! Great work!), they are still in the city's fair. The Market, therefore, becomes our way of disseminating information to the party naturally. So let's meet Lieutenant Shella.

A rumor in the text states that a captain of the guard, Merdick Forren, disappeared the day before the fair began. Using the web supplement for the city (so helpful, read it if you want to flesh out the area), we are introduced to Lieutenant Shella, who now has to run the guard operation until a new captain is found.

Let’s make her a more prominent figure in the PCs' minds. She can approach them, having seen them jump into action during the wererat fight (encounter 4), and ask for their help. She can tell them to go around the market and talk to local shop owners.  She directly asks the characters to talk to the local shop owners. Lt. Shella knows something is going on, but the shop keeps won’t talk to the guard for some reason.

Unknown to her, the wererats in human form are running a protection racket. She tells the PCs to meet her at a specific location that evening to tell what they know. This could be any location the PCs would head towards naturally. I used the temple of Pelor because of the party's cleric and its importance later on. The barracks would work great for pretty much any party.

Various store owners will provide the info based on the DCs listed in the Gather Information section. I allowed persuasion (w/ adv for clearing the fair) or intimidation (w/ disadv because they are already scared of the protection racket), but you could allow whatever.

Include Shooma from Encounter 8 - "To Market" if the PCs are interested or stuck. This way if everyone fails the roll we have our safety net. Shooma is a sweet old dwarf who talked to the old captain hours before he disappeared. He was on a routine patrol, not investigating anything in particular, but he was asking questions about any extortion.

If a PC is a rogue or affiliated with a Thieves' Guild, they could learn about the Gold Tabbard Merchant Company, the local guild, which is not happy about the werrats encroaching on their territory.

Now that we know our framing and delivery structure, let's take a look at our clues!
