You should tell us about color psychology that sounds cool as hell
YES… HA HA HA… YES!
GGGOD I WISH I WASN’T OUT OF THE HOUSE RIGHT NOW. but i’ve been thinking about colors literally all day so you all get to be subject to my madness! sorry this is long and rambly wauaua. nightmarishly long post under the cut.
okay. first things first, a few basics. color theory and color psychology tend to get confused a lot in discussions, but they usually refer to different things. color theory is more about we physically perceive colors (color wheels and color schemes the like), while color psychology focuses on our emotional response to colors. if you’re familiar with the children’s hospital color theory post, that poster wasn’t actually talking about color theory, but color psychology (and also it’s incredibly surface level and heavily misunderstands the subject because in what fucking universe does the quantity of positive associations with a color matter more than the context it’s used in and sorry i have personal beef with this tumblr post).
color theory is also a special interest of mine but i’m not gonna touch on it too much here because it’s not entirely important. mmmaybe another time…
essentially, certain colors (and color combinations) have associations in our brains and that affect our behavior and emotions. these associations are also very much affected by the context a color is used in. colors don’t exist in a vacuum! so while red can symbolize passion and love when used in something like a dress or a bouquet of flowers, it has a very different connotation when it’s, say, splattered on the walls or smeared on the ground in a snail trail.
or for a less Children’s Hospital Themed example, i’ll put my euphrasie and king designs here!
Tumblr media
(of course the saturation and brightness of these blues play a massive part in how they’re perceived but this is not a post about color theory this is n)
and, of course, combining colors in a piece can also change their meanings!! i’m about to get real fucking normal.
i’m gonna be focusing on the color combo of red and yellow here because it’s the one that’s most relevant to my art (and also it’s really interesting.) basically, seeing these two colors together activates the part of our brain that controls our appetite, making us actually feel hungry. this is why so many food companies use red and yellow in their branding! it’s neat stuff!!
Tumblr media
also, if you’re familiar with it, this is why the mv for butcher vanity uses this color palette!! along with red’s general associations with danger and blood, the color combo also physically induces hunger. pretty fitting for a song about cannibalism!
Tumblr media
(there is also red’s association with lust and passion and how that intersects with the double meaning in the lyrics but i cannot derail this post into being an analysis of butcher vanity i’m sorry. we’d be here all week. maybe another day... wipes a tear from my eye)
and i think this might be the reason why some people feel hungry when they see my art, even when i’m not drawing food. while i don’t tend to use red outright, most of my art has very warm undertones (red-oranges and yellows especially), which could be activating that hunger response??
Tumblr media
(ah fuck color theory managed to weasel its way into this post again)
admittedly this part is just speculation on my end. i think my rendering style and Shapes also play a role in it, but it’s interesting for me to think about!!
this is only scratching the surface of how complicated colors can get. i was going to go on an entire tangent about color grading and how green lighting can make a scene feel unnerving but this post is already Too Fucking Long. aaaa super sorry if this is Rambly or hard to understand!! i’m not Entirely sure how much the average person knows about color theory and psychology so if there’s any confusing terms here i’m fine with adding stuff for clarity!
wauauuaa thank you so much for asking!!!! i love talking about colors.
tl;dr colors have a bunch of different emotions and meanings tied to them, but you’ve gotta pay attention to the context in which it’s being used. so maybe take a step back before you put that thick red trail on the floor of your children’s hospital.

Aventurine with a reader who prefers to spend more time indoors during winter. (oh to be born in winter and despise the winter weather itself)
-Smooch Anon 💋
Where the Cold Can’t Touch Us
Summary: You prefer to stay indoors, safe from the winter chill. Aventurine understands your distaste for the cold yet finds a playful way to coax you out of your comfort zone. Suggesting a wager, he challenges you to a game of cards: if you lose, you must brave a winter stroll with him.
Tags: Aventurine x Reader, Established Relationship, Fluff, Cozy moments, Winter Special, Playful banter, Gentle teasing, Warmth in the cold, Indoor dates, Sweet gestures, Companionship.
Tumblr media
As winter's chill wraps itself around the city, you find yourself once again nestled indoors, wrapped in the warm, soft embrace of blankets and layers. The frosty air outside and the biting winds are not your friends—winter may have birthed you, but it certainly hasn’t won your favor. Fortunately, a certain blond gambler with vibrant eyes understands this about you perfectly. And, as always, Aventurine finds a way to make even your self-imposed winter sanctuary a place of light and laughter.
You’re sitting by the window, a cup of tea warming your hands, when you feel the sofa dip beside you. Aventurine slides in, his arms draped casually over the back, wearing that playful smirk that always gives him away.
“I see my favorite winter hibernator is hard at work,” he teases, eyes glinting with mischief as he wraps his arm around you, gently pulling you closer. “Tell me, love—if you despise the cold so much, why insist on being born in winter?”
“It wasn’t exactly my choice,” you reply, rolling your eyes. “Believe me, if I had a say, I would’ve picked a sunnier season.”
He chuckles, his voice rich with amusement. “Consider it fate, then. The chill just had to bring something warm to this world.”
You blush slightly at the compliment, nestling further into his side, the warmth of his presence seeping through the layers of blankets. Aventurine tilts his head back thoughtfully, as if considering some new scheme. With him, everything is a game, even these cozy moments, where he skillfully makes you forget the dreariness of the season.
“Since you refuse to step out,” he continues with a dramatic sigh, “it looks like I’ll have to bring the entertainment to you. How does a little winter wager sound?”
“A wager?” You raise an eyebrow. “What are we betting on this time?”
He pulls a deck of cards from his pocket, shuffling it with practiced grace. “A simple game of chance. If you win, I’ll stay in and play the dutiful winter companion. If I win, you’ll have to endure a brief winter stroll with me—nothing too far, just enough to get a bit of rosy color in those cheeks.”
You laugh, knowing full well he’ll somehow manage to twist the game in his favor. Still, you agree, because with Aventurine, even a losing hand feels like a victory.
In the end, after a series of close calls and playful accusations of cheating, you “lose,” as expected. But as you bundle up reluctantly, Aventurine takes your hand and leads you to the balcony instead of out into the cold streets. You pause, looking up at him, confusion etched on your face.
“I thought you’d try to drag me outside.” you say, shivering slightly as a gust of cold air swirls around you.
“True,” he replies, slipping an arm around you to pull you closer. “But I couldn’t make you too uncomfortable, could I? Besides, this way, you get your fresh air, and I get to keep you right where I like you—next to me, warm and cozy.”
Aventurine’s warmth, combined with the gentle embrace, makes the winter seem almost bearable. His presence is all you need, a reminder that even the coldest days can be filled with warmth as long as he’s by your side.

⚠️Timelock Key Spoilers⚠️
Ok so visuals first...
The contrast between the previous card and this one is just... so impactful
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The used and abused little boy has come so far... a sovereign on his throne, grown men kneeling at his feet.
And speaking of his throne... and of men kneeling before him... we've seen both before
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
As you can see, Kinglus has been canon all along 👑😌
And as you can also see by looking at the thrones side by side, they're very similar. The steps leading up to a platform, the color, the curved armrests, even what appears to be a large window behind both, a large object swinging like a pendulum overhead. So while not 100% identical, I do believe they are meant to be the same.
Which is in my mind significant to the – as always beautifully written – text and to placing the Timelock Key to a particular event
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Bear in mind that this is all just my interpretations and that I am in no way claiming them to be accurate, but I believe that this is meant to represent Sylus' takeover of the N109 Zone. Partly because of the throne, but also because I feel like it's what makes most sense with the current information we have.
We know that after the Chronorift Catastrophe, there were violent gang wars and feuds over who would rule the N109 Zone. Sylus' takeover was not instantaneous, but took 2 years (he landed in 2034, and established his rulership in 2036). This slow (for Sylus, who's raw powers should have enabled him to win the crown much sooner considering how he'd conquered whole planets before) process would be in line with what is written above about him slowly approaching a throne. Why it took that amount of time, I do not know. Perhaps his amusement in watching the populace scramble and fight for power made it so that he was in no particular hurry to end it, perhaps he was busy with other matters (founding Onychinus, hunting down Gaia/EVER researchers, looking for the Protocore Map) to give it too much focus or energy. Maybe a combination. Or something else. We don't know exactly what he was up to in the immediate aftermath of saving little MC from Dimitri, after all.... except being jumped by 13 consecutive guys trying and failing to mug him, and obtaining his iconic biker outfit (and presumably bike, as well).
Going back to the text I think the last part is very very important because of what it doesn't say. "A crown vowen from schemes and ambition gently falls next to his feet". Notice how there is no mention of Sylus picking said crown up? Of putting it on his head?
I think that this is very deliberate by the writers. I think that this shows how Sylus, for all that he has amassed power and influence, is ultimately not interested in it for his own sake or desires. He doesn't care about wearing the crown, because the crown itself is not the reason for his machinations. MC is. His takeover of the N109 Zone was all for her.
As Sylus himself tells MC, him landing in the N109 Zone was no coincidence. Nor is his establishing himself there. There he could safeguard the experimental data on MC left at the Gaia Research Center, keep an eye on Dimitri, and prepare a way for MC to find the answers that he knew she'd one day seek.
If power and rulership for their own sake was what he was after then he could simply do so over any of the literal planets he conquered. But that was never his goal. Sylus does not give a flying fuck about that, conqueror and sovereign though he may be.
His driving ambition has always been in service of MC. To ensure not only her wellbeing and protection, but also that she will one day know the truth about herself and be strong enough to face the people – or forces – coming for her (hence his desperation in LAR to make her resonance "as strong as possible").
This?
Tumblr media
All for her. Not himself.
There truly is no love purer than his.
Now for tomorrow's Timelock...
Tumblr media
There is only one thing that comes to mind when looking at this immense pain "We were like flowers. We were meant to grow together in the same soil. Yet you were quietly moved to another garden in a foreign land"
Hahahaha 💔... oh... tomorrow is going to hurt... 🥲

Y'all remember this post I made talking about how kimono carries visual and cultural language within it and how you can express so so much just by picking the type, the cut, and the patterns? I actually want to extrapolate on this and show how we can actually see that language used during the TWST New Year's event! (Sources will be directly linked as information is introduced.)
For some initial context, while the "plot" of the event is mainly just Sam's New Year Sale, a lot of the visual language, accessories, and cultural references used in the event call back to Shōgatsu or the Japanese New Year festival. This is a time where people WILL dress in traditional kimono and participate in traditional games, dances, eating traditional foods. So seeing the cast in kimono makes a world of sense.
The character I want to talk about in this post specifically is Ortho. His design for the New Year is honestly such a great example of how the different subtleties in kimono all come together to paint a picture, and tell you so much about the person wearing the kimono. Because ultimately, when I look at Ortho's kamishimo? All I see is brilliant foreshadowing about the entire plot of Book 6 and his role in the narrative.
Tumblr media
The first thing I want to draw your attention to is the colors. It's the thing we see at a first glance. And while yes, these are the colors of Ignihyde, you might find it interesting to know how this combination translates in the kimono visual language. White, black, and blue are colors associated with and/or signify winter and death. So even if you had no idea that Ortho lived in STYX and was twisted from the film adaptation, Hercules, you could still draw that association from what colors he chose to wear and specifically which color is his base color - white, and which are his accent colors- black and blue.
To further explain, black is the traditional color worn when wearing mourning kimono. And white bleached cotton is traditionally worn as the garments of the deceased. While it may be a bit of a stretch, to me, the choice to use white base garments with black and blue accessories may actually reflect his in-between state. The way that real Ortho is dead, and this Ortho lives in his place is a huge aapect of the narrative behind Idia and Ortho. Grief and the negotiation of self identity, the path that Ortho takes to figuring out who he is despite being a living memory of someone who is dead, is not lost in the visual language of this kamishimo. I think, whether intentional or not, it's something reflected in how the black overlays the white, signifying that mourning and that life after the passing of another.
The next thing I want to actually draw your attention to is the era that the kimono comes from and the style of the kimono. This kimono is actually called a "kamishimo". The Kamishimo was the uniform worn by samurai during the Edo Period shōganate. The combination of the overcoat with the inner shirt, hakama pants, and specific style of adorned obi was quintisential for anyone who lived as a samurai. It signified their role in the government and their social status without the need for explanation, allowing people to adjust their mannerisms accordingly upon first meeting the samurai.
We know from how Idia refers to himself as 拙者 (sessha) and refers to others as -氏 (shi) that he and Ortho are incredibly passionate about the Edo period and very specifically samurai. So it really is a cute nod to that that Ortho would be wearing it. At least... if that's where the symbolism ended.
See the thing that strikes me about his kamishimo is that it's not a "real" kamishimo either. From the silouhette, color scheme, and broad shoulders, we can actually deduce that the kamishimo here is a theatrical kamishimo- worn in Kabuki theater.
Kabuki theater really developed and took off during the Edo period, especially during the Era in which women were forbidden from performing on stages. Many of the jidai-mono (historical plays) performed in Kabuki utilize yakugara (character archetypes) to make it much easier for audiences to watch and appreciate the narrative. These archetypes are often visually defined by uniform or repeating characteristics in their kimono, their makeup, their wigs, and their props as a short hand for audiences to be able to follow.
One such yakugara is called the "jitsuaku". This archetype is specifically defined by an "evil mastermind who plots to overthrow the goverment/feudal lord through rebellion", either due to seeking revenge, wanting power, or by whatever rationale the narrative gives him.
Here are some classical depictions of the jitsuaku in traditional artworks:
Source
Tumblr media
Source
Tumblr media
We can see by the depictions what the common color schemes and patterns used in their kamishimo are; the big/baggy silouhette with extremely dramatic, pointed shoulder pads; and the various decorative accessories and how they are placed.
Look familiar?
Ortho's silouhette very clearly harkons back to these specific types of kamishimo, that are considered archetypal of the jitsuaku. In other words, I have reason to suspect that the card designers of TWST are depicting Ortho as a jitsuaku... a evil mastermind who seeks to take over an institution through rebellion...
That sounds an awful lot like the plot of Book 6 and his specific role in the narrative to me.
This is all to say that the visual language of kimono is so so prevalent in his design, and I would extend that argument to every design in the New Year's line up - yes, this includes the most recent inclusion of Jack, Malleus, Jamil, and Floyd. And personally, I think it's genuinely so so cool and incredible that they would choose to add those nuances intentionally into the design in order to tell us everything that we need to know about the character- from social status, to gender and sexuality, to even personal feelings and emotions. It shows how much love is genuinely poured into making these characters feel alive and dynamic, and I think it's genuinely worth taking the time to appreciate.
And if you are still reading this and you are just starting to learn more about the visual art of kimono, then I genuinely hope you find this as encouragement to deep dive and learn more for yourself. Because honestly having that access and knowledge to those cultural elements and traditions truly helps open your eyes to all of the subtleties and messages that the creator wants you to see. And moreover? I think it really helps allow us to better appreciate the characters and the artwork on a much deeper level.
Thank you for reading this. I hope you genuinely found it fun, insightful, and maybe even inspiring. 💚

Frost and Gricko's tattoos for the iasuw au! Moving on to the kinda complex designs that made me have a bit of a crisis (legit), these ones are just as fun to make but relatively challenging to the previous one in terms of "what do I even put?".
I'll be yapping on my thoughts/headcannons regarding these below, so feel free to dive in! A warning that it is quite lengthy because of said crises-induced reflecting session (a proud citizen of yap city indeed)
First off, we have to talk about the technicalities of Frost's tattoos. It actually put me in a crisis when making this because the first question that came to mind when finding inspo was was "how the hell do you put tattoos on a tiger?"
Aside from the issue of tattooing onto fur, there is the presence of stripes that make it difficult to create a design in the first place. So for this a.u's sake (and my well being) we can treat fur like skin where tattoos can easily be applied and expressed, but would have a shorter lifespan, aka fade quicker, as a con so retouching would be more often. It can also overlap the patterns of the natural fur if designed as such (as I did with Frost).
With this, characters who have fur (e.g. Jornir) could possibly be given tattoos designs in the future while side stepping the technical issues to avoid putting to much focus on it. This could apply to other characters who may have leathery or feathery skin types.
Now of to the designing part. Unlike Gideon and Torbek, the aesthetic/style of the tattoo was not apparent at first and took a bit of a backseat to the actual design elements for Frost. Originally, using a purely geometrical style did not feel satisfying. After revisiting his canon for some ideas, an illustrative style was added to contrast the geometry which then seemingly worked out.
"Frost's design is built mostly of geometry (circles, squares and triangles) to reflect the motion of balance between familiarity and change, logic and unpredictability, comfort and discovery. Strict in pattern and position, most are simple as to take into account the stripes of his fur.
"The only complicated design, a dragon circling a tower and followed by a koi fish, was inspired by the legend of a koi travelling an upstream waterfall to turn into a dragon, signifying strength and perseverance. It is also a sign, that behind a rigid demeanor is a fiery passion waiting to be unleashed." -> The connected yarn was to give the idea that Frost can weave this path of his, but a connection as well to my other hc that it is his main reminder of his home in Yulong.
Things also mostly come in eight (resembles infinity as well as signs for wealth and success)! It was quite fun determining how to add this in as well :D
For the actual main inspo, IVE's "HEYA" has been on the forefront. Combined with another inspired by the phrase "When tigers used to smoke…" (which is the literary equivalent of "once upon a time…" and what has "once upon a…" in their name?), I must say that culture took the reigns in directing Frost's design and imho I would say that, compared to others, his was more appropriate to have strong semblances of his home as a remembrance (e.g. yarn, temple) during his travels.
Also I used a green coloring scheme because literally all other colors did not look as good as i intended. Fate really wanted him to have a green-orange scheme.
youtube
Now we got Frost out of the way, its Gricko's turn! Despite being challenging as well, Gricko's design had assistance from punk/heavy metal aesthetics. Though the only idea that I really had mostly was the logo of different band names
I will gladly argue on why Gricko's college band name should be "Goblin Deez..." Imagine, you can say nuts if you are being funny or hands if you want a fight. Anything really, which is liberating at its finest.
From here though, the main idea really that bloomed after this was that most of his tattoos were going to be personal too him!
"Aside from the egregious tattoo of his band name, the tattoos all over him speak of his journey. A pinup of a lady troll and a crown from the hit tv series game of chairs, for his childhood dreams of being a king and bagging a hot troll. A scale and guitar for his college pol. sci days. Others speaking of his collected hobbies and knick- knacks throughout a particularly challenging adulthood. Yet on his chest is his most cherished, his center and everything, which is none other than Hootsie."
The covered half sleeve tattoos on his arm ? That's to cover up the name of his exes (Headcanon that Gricko was just as much a womanizer as Gideon, but mostly in his college to early adult life. He slowed down once Hootsie entered the picture). Also its just more badass looking with designs of the monsters his canon self uses lol.
ALSO ALSO PAINTED NAILS, I'LL ARGUE WITH THE WHOLE COURT ROOM THAT HE AND HOOTSIE PAINT EACH OTHERS NAILS AS A HC!!!!
End of yapping session. Meeting adjourned!

hihi do you have any tips regarding digital art? im trying to make the transition from traditional and I find coloring so challenging 😭 I love your art sm and hope to reach your level someday <33
Good to know that you're transitioning, hehe! Of course, I'm happy to reply you!
I must admit that it took me a few of years how to figure, and I consider that the coloring and color theory are tricky.
Before explain how do I color, I must clarify I only use Krita. This art program is [FREE!]!!!
The secret is that I use the following tools to make the colors more beautiful.
Specific Color Selector
Filters mask
Different types of Layers
You should experiment with these tools!
Specific Color Selector
For some reasons, I avoid using color wheel because I don't get always colors that combine well. I only use the color wheel to guide myself to see the color schemes.
Like in this case, if you want to try make yellow turning dark red, sometimes it doesn't look "fluid". Like we only can trust in our eyes, so it can take us more time to figure out how to make the colors appearing well.
Without the specific color selector, using the color wheel.
Tumblr media
To activate this tool (Specific Color selector), you can go to settings -> dockers -> Specific Color Selector, as you can see.
Tumblr media
According to the RGB theory, red, green and blue are primary colors.
Magenta is a secondary color made by combining red and blue.
Cyan is a secondary color made by combining green and blue.
Yellow is a secondary color made by combining red and green.
So if you want to make it more red, you have to lower the green. As you can see in this screenshot.
Tumblr media
With the specific color selector, I only have to move a little backward. To make it reddish, you have lower the green or blue of RGB.
To make darker, you may have to lower the red.
Tumblr media
It combines well with colors, right? Yaya!
You can apply similarly, but always be sure to remind how colors work in the RGB theory. Or you can use another model color, and you may learn how the colors model works!
Filter mask
I love so much filter mask, I may use these to have quick fix of 'bad combination of colors' or 'too far off colors'.
Inside the filter mask tool, I use mostly Color adjustment, HSV/HSL Adjustment, ASC-CDL.
Well, I mostly use the color adjustment to balance some colors, if you want to make it more warm, you may play with curves of Red, and lower the part of blue/green!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Different types of layers:
You can check out the guide of "Blending modes" on Krita, and you may use some of these modes.
I use Hard light, overlay, multiply, Color dodge depending of what I would like to.
Hard light to shade or light.
Multiply to shade.
Color dodge to give it lighting
Overlay to give it a bit balance color
I suggest you to experiment with these blending modes or different types of layers! And you will understand a bit. Of course, I also suggest you to play with the opacity of the layer with the blending mode!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
You may combine some layers to reach the desired result!
This video teaches you how to use blending mode for some specific parts, like lighting, shading, rendering, etc.
youtube
I recommend you to watch some good videos that helped me to understand better the confusing color theory

I hope it's useful for you!

OKAY here is my DanteLucia thread from twt!
God....like these are my insane thoughts about them, whatever ramblings I have here are my own interpretation btw hehe but if u think they are quite real then...hehe
Tumblr media
So to start the whole thing I just wanna say that DMC 2's theme makes heavy use of parallels and doubles.
DMC 2 also uses the theme of alchemy, and we get to see this throughout the whole game, especially with Dante and Lucia. So this ramble is just me making silly connections.
So to start Dante and Lucia's designs are paralleled with each other, both of them have each other's hair colors as their base clothes colors. While Dante has his obv red themed clothes Lucia has white/gray-themed clothes just like Dante's gray/white hair.
Tumblr media
idk if this was intentional by the designers to make Lucia have a parallel color scheme to Dante, but I like to think it's intentional since the whole theme is about the combination/union of 2 things.
Speaking of union, since the game has a ton of alchemy references, Lucia and Dante being represented (or associated) by the coin with 2 figures says a lot about the union of both the male and female (a common thing for alchemy btw).
Tumblr media
also the union of both genders is seen with argosax too, but im going out of topic.
Dante and Lucia are the figures on the same-sided coin that Dante has and it also shows how their personalities are paralleled too, which imma get into.
For their paralleled personalities, Dante and Lucia both have the same job and hatred for demons. Not only are their goals aligned—with wanting to protect humanity—but they also have the same insecurity.
Their demon heritage.
During the whole game, Lucia was ready to make a sacrifice due to her finding out shes a demon.
She became reckless and very suicidal if you think about it, and if we talk about Dante didn't he kinda went through the same thing ?
Tumblr media
Dante is ready to sacrifice himself in the vain for others (can even say he has been like that from the beginning), same with Lucia.
Both of them see their abilities as something they can use to protect the greater good, not even caring what happens to them.
That's why when Lucia cries—telling Dante she's expendable, he comforts her. And this is during the peak "depressed" Dante era...he knows full well what that feels and he comforts her with words he probably uses to remind himself that he is still human. That he is someone.
Dante and Lucia's insecurities not only overlap but their goals and love for humans are very noticeable. Both of them would do anything to protect the world, love their mama, and they both care for this random person they just met.
Dante and Lucia might act sort of cold (be it bc of the writing lol) but in the end, their cold shell breaks, and they actually comforted one another.
Lucia reminded Dante what he was fighting for, and Dante reminded Lucia she isn't as demonic as she thinks she is.
Next, I will talk about the DMC 5 novel DanteLucia crumbs and most of this will probably be very headcanony and like make rlly big assumptions but this is my delusion and ur all stuck with it.
In the dmc 5 novel, we get to see or hear more about Lucia. It's not much, but it delves deeper into her feelings for Dante, but also her and Dante's insecurities.
In the novel, Dante has expressed insecurity with his age when Matier tried to teasingly ask him to date Lucia.
Not only is this a deflection of Dante, but he thought about Lucia's feelings as well. If Dante were to grow old, what about Lucia? She's a homunculus, so she wouldn't age, and ppl tend to overlook this imo.
He thought that if he were to date Lucia, a homunculus, he would die way earlier and would leave her, which he doesn't want to happen to someone he would potentially date.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lucia also has the same age insecurity with her comment on not aging which Dante reassures her that it's something all women want! Lucia, obv, makes a restrained smile....she knows Dante is trying to make her feel better, and I just...yeah
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
But what gets me is that Dante is rlly proud that Lucia has more confidence in herself....hes glad she is doing alright ;_; but also the fact that Lucia is so happy to fight alongside with Dante and even see themselves as partners that demons cant defeat what if i collapse....

I have lot of similar interests with Catherine and I would love love love if she would do some sort of photo shoot like other working royals have done as I feel her style and taste of home decor is so good, I also studied Art History and love colour so hearing jewel green is one of the colours chosen fits with my own personal preference as I’m currently decorating my own home albeit rented with jewel blue picked for my living room and I’m thinking a golden yellow for my hallway as it’s quite dark. I love how Catherine is able to make neutrals feel warm and homely and actually nice when they are hard to do so, but can do it with jewel tones and other brighter colours. What is your taste in decor and colour schemes?
It’s a combination of moody, art deco, and mid-century modern with little asynchronous nods to some interests.
The only two rooms that are done-done are my home office (jewelly/moody purple) and my powder bath (Harry Potter-themed). My bedroom is partially done (big accent wall with a moody floral wallpaper mural), but everything else is still Sell-Your-House-Millennial-Grey.
I don’t mind Sell-Your-House-Millennial-Grey - I actually like grey - but it’s so flat and one-dimensional that it’s starting to annoy me. I see some paint projects in my future. Since my family is no help (they’re very “everything needs to flow in one cohesive color palette for resale value”) I was thinking about crowd-sourcing some paint colors here.
Edit: I can’t believe I forgot about this! We have a paint color here in the US called “Kate’s Ring” and it is literally the most perfect shade of sapphire blue. I painted my nightstands (rescued from the Habitat for Humanity Restore) this color and I’m obsessed.

Bella’s wardrobe consists of mostly dark tones that reflect her simple, laid-back style. Not a lot of white or pastels are used in her look, but they can be used minimally to accent other colors that serve as the focal point, such as these:
Dark blues
Neutral light and dark grays
Earthy browns
Black
Burnt or sunset oranges
Dark purples
Green
‗ ❍ 𝑻𝒐𝒑𝒔
The first thing you need to know is that Bella’s entire style is based off lots of layering. There will usually be multiple shirts, layered shirts and jackets, or a combination of shirts, sweaters, and coats.
These shirts are often plain and don’t have a lot of pattern to them, but there are some exceptions to this, like striped shirts.
Bella often wears long sleeved, fitted shirts in most of her outfits. They complement the body shape and allow for extra layering on top.
To go one step further, layer a short sleeve tee on top. Use colors that complement the long sleeve shirt.
If you want to add a little bit of interest to the outfit, use a button-up plaid shirt instead of the short-sleeved tee. Leave this unbuttoned and wear it like a jacket to get the full effect.
Since Forks weather is largely rainy or cold most of the year, Bella often makes appearances in raincoats, fleece lined coats, or thick hoodies. You can layer this on top of any of the options listed above.
Blouses are also seen in a few of Bella’s outfits, so if you don’t want the hassle of choosing things to layer, a simple blouse will work by itself.
‗ ❍ 𝑷𝒂𝒏𝒕𝒔
Bella doesn’t have a lot of variation when it comes to the bottom of her outfits, but there are a few different options to still get that effect.
Jeans: opt for medium or dark wash jeans that are flares, boot cut, or straight leg.
Skirts: khaki, denim, or corduroy are all great options and still adhere to Bella’s laid-back style.
Leggings: Choose a solid colored black or brown legging that is either fitted or flare leg.
‗ ❍ 𝑺𝒉𝒐𝒆𝒔
Bella’s signature shoes are Converse, but there are multiple options based on the overall look of your outfit. Usually her shoes are quite worn and scuffed, but this is optional and just helps the look come together a little bit.
Black or dark purple Converse
Flat-soled sneakers
Black combat boots
‗ ❍ 𝑨𝒄𝒄𝒆𝒔𝒔𝒐𝒓𝒊𝒆𝒔
Bella’s personal style is incredibly simple, so accessories will be mostly small and not eye-catching.
Of course we can’t forget her signature black headband- opt for a thin one that will help hold your hair.
When choosing necklaces, make sure it’s something on the subtle side, matches with your chosen color scheme, and adheres to her simple style. Think silver or beaded jewelry, or choose something with a very small pendant.
Bracelets can vary quite a bit- you can use beaded bracelets, thin woven ones, subtle wooden ones, or you can just copycat her blue and silver bracelet from Twilight (you can find it on Amazon).
If you’re a hardcore fan of the Twilight books, you probably know that Bella owns a moonstone ring- this is great to add to her look.
Earrings need to be either studs or very small, thin hoops. Opt for silver jewelry, and if they do have charms on them, make sure those are small and subtle.
If it’s cold and you would like to add a scarf and gloves, make sure they’re a solid color. These can be knit or fabric, depending on what goes with your chosen outfit.
‗ ❍ 𝑯𝒂𝒓
For those of us that have long or medium length hair, it will be the easiest to copycat Bella’s style. However, if you have short hair or don’t have any at all, a wig can be a great option if styled appropriately.
Use either a straightener or a curler to give body to the lengths, but don’t curl it all the way! Instead opt for subtle curls at the bottom ends of your hair with a few pieces curled more fully here and there for shape. Then use the black headband and pull a few face framing pieces out in front, spraying the curls to make them last.
‗ ❍ 𝑴𝒂𝒌𝒆𝒖𝒑
Bella’s makeup is extremely subtle and natural, but I do have some quick tips if you’re someone who does wear makeup every day.
Opt for a natural foundation, skin tint, or concealer: we want the skin to look very natural, so don’t use full coverage products for this look. Textured and acne-prone skin will need medium coverage, but make sure this isn’t cakey or dry.
Blush: Don’t use a lot of it, but aim your blush on the apples of the cheeks and blend it up towards your temples- this will create a naturally lifted look. You can also use a tiny bit across the middle of your nose bridge to amplify the natural glow.
Eyebrows: Bella’s brows are naturally very straight, so don’t curve them a lot if possible. They are also rather dark and thin, so shape with concealer and a good brow product.
Eyeshadow: Bella’s eye makeup is very subtle and warm toned (to contrast the cool tones of the Cullens). Use a light brown shade all over the lid and a little bit under to add dimension, then use a slightly darker shade above the crease. Don’t use too much or too dark of a product, because we want this to look as natural as possible.
Eyeliner: Bella doesn’t wear eyeliner, but if you feel you can’t go without it, opt for a brown liner instead of a black one, and keep the wing very small. This will help it look less harsh.
Lashes: Bella has naturally thick lashes, so opt for either a brown or black mascara and use 1-2 coats to make sure the lashes are visible. I don’t recommend false lashes for this look, so just use a mascara and your natural lashes if possible.
Lips: Again, emphasizing the natural look, opt for something light and hydrating, such as a sheer lip oil, tinted chapstick, or subtle lip stain. Use colors close to your natural lip color or add just a tiny bit of mauve/pink tones.
✧.* Let me know if there’s another character you would like me to do a full tutorial on!

give us your trans!grace thoughts pls i beg
WELL— how can I say no to that ???
But before I get into the transness and queer nature of Grace's gender, I gotta elaborate on the basics (we’re taking the long road here BUT TAKE MY HAND WE’LL GET THERE I PROMISE KSDHFJ)
It cannot be overstated that Grace’s gender as a teenage girl is quite inherent to her character, at least in how I interpret her. The way she was raised, her relationship with God and religion as a whole, her relationship to her family, her understanding of sex and sexuality, the way people (especially men, like Max or Kyle) treat her. It’s all tied back to the fact she's perceived as (and in canon identifies as) a teenage girl.
In fact, if we take the colour scheme of her general outfits (disregarding the green turtleneck sweater from Perky’s Buds, just for the ease of analysis here, but I have THOUGHTS about the turtleneck that tie more into Grace’s sexuality—) the major colours are pink and blue. Of course these colors have various meanings (including very trans meanings, WE’LL GET THERE) but let's start with basics. Pink and blue = girl and boy, as shown by the shirt division in AC. Push it further, her outfit in NPMD is baby pink and blue—which to me highlights her innocence, or expected innocence as that sexless, pure, deeply religious teenage girl everyone wants her to be.
But Grace is not that girl. She’s not the kind of girl that can sit and be quiet, because Grace Chasity is loud and abrasive and annoying to most who know her. She’s also not the kind of girl who can repress her sexual desires and wait until marriage. Grace isn’t soft and demure—she is quick to jump to rage, to violence, and she is desperate for the power that she’s been denied her whole life. Denied because she is a girl — a future wife, a future mother, a woman of church. Objectified and repressed and Grace clearly cannot stand being what her community deems to be a ‘girl.’
Okay now let's get into the trans shit BABYYY
(Disclaimer – I am trans, but my own experience does not encompass the trans experience as a whole nor am I willing to speak from any sort of authority beyond my own gender-fuckery. And for the sake of brevity, and because this is a tumblr post and already getting long, I’ll resist sourcing and quoting feminist and gender theory. For now)
I imagine, when approaching Grace from a trans or gender queer perspective, her own image of herself would be something like this. Grace is a girl because that’s what she’s always been—but maybe, if given the tools and the space and the time to think about it—she might come to conclusions. I think maybe Grace doesn’t necessarily identify heavily with either side of the specturm, but neither side is especially repulsive either. In a way, Grace is just Grace. I think at her healthiest someone would ask what her gender is and she’d say “Grace.”
Because she does enjoy wearing pretty dresses at church, and loves the pink in her wardrobe, and even adores the clips that her mom puts in her hair. But, I also think that’s not all Grace enjoys. (Heavily going off my fics here, I have a fic where Grace begins to dabble in drag) Maybe Grace likes drawing a fake beard on her face—because does she love Jesus or does she envy Jesus in a gender way? Maybe dressing up as Jesus is euphoric and enlightening and allows her to tough on masculinity in a way she never has before.
And pronouns ? Let’s talk about pronouns. I’ve joked before about Grace’s introduction to the concept of neopronouns by a joke the nerds make about “He/Him” pronouns for god being neopronouns. And I think Grace would really fuck with the idea of neoprounouns—of just getting to choose. To make a choice is to have power, and oh does Grace crave power—especially about her own body, about her identity, about who she is. I could honestly see Grace using any combination of pronouns. Any, neo, a mix, hell maybe she just goes by Grace and GOOD FOR HER !!
I also promised colour theory in the trans way – so lets touch on that. You cannot show me a character who is constantly dressed in a light pink and a light blue in ALL her outfits (except one, shhhh) and not expect me to point at her and nod my head going “yes trans.” Like COME ON? Purposeful? Highly unlikely, BUT… The colours in the trans flag DO come from the gender assigned to those two colours—and I don’t think it's unlikely that the colour scheme was picked for that reason instead.
ANYWAYYY. Those have been some of my thoughts on Trans!Grace Chasity that I have touched on a little in a fic (you can find that here if you’re interested but no pressure) and I really plan on touching on it again at some time. Thank you for the ask anon !!!

Transformers: Windblade International Women's Day Special
Tumblr media
Hello all you happy autobots and welcome to my international women's day special!
So last year as part of my ongoing retrospective of Transformers More than Meets the Eye, aka one of my faviorite comics ever, for patreon Brotoman.EXE, I took a look at it's sister series Robots in Disguise. And i'm fine.. just...
Tumblr media
For those less familiar on paper RID was supposed to be a gritty political intrigue type series. Game of thrones with robots to More than Meets the Eye's combination of Star Trek and JLI also with robots. In practice... it's a bunch of assholes constantly squabbling while Starscream is the best. RID had a great premise, exploring a rebuilding cybertron fractured by centuries of war and the civilians who weren't exactly stoked about said war, but wasted it.
Thankfully after the dark cybertron crossover things got transformed: RID was now about Optimus and a group of autobots heading to earth for shenanigans, crossovers and a few title changes, leaving a gap open for a new cybertron set book. Enter Windblade.
Windblade was part of hasbro's "fan built bot" inittiave.. something I just found out exists. It allowed fans to help design a new character.. the team still clearly had ideas in mind, but select parts were voted on by us. It's a nice way to engage fans.
So her traits were slowly selected: An autobot with a jet alt mode, a sword, a red and black color scheme and a valiant personality. I would've prefered wild man (or wild woman in this case), but hey. A second round determined her name and gender. The last two selections would be reworked: Her home city was chosen.. but as a female transformer she was reworked to be from another planet as the bots on cybertron were all male at birth, while her generalized telepathy became a cityspeaker. Both are changes I have no issue with: the former fits into the unvierse better and the latter is just a cooler more speciality skill with a lot more intresting lore and character stuff attached. I find this whole concept fun and simple: a way to add a new character into the books but give writers and artists wiggle room. Her design was contriversal from what I can tell with a lot of fans fearing her kabuki look was another drift. Me I think it works, especially with the given context: Windblade's story is an immigrant story: she's new to cybertron, Starscream resents her alien status, so it fits she has a deisgn that's diffrent from most g1 designs, more elligant and ornate. It shows off her status as a Cityspeaker is a MASSIVE deal on their homeworld and crucial to cybertron's survival, but also her fish out of water status: she was absent for the war and now has to dive into a world that she HOPED would be helpful.. but instead is a cesspit of decption, intrigue and is barely holding on. I admitely don't know much about kabuki, but unlike drift it at least feels like the artists did their research instead of going off a 12 year old's scribblings about samurai.
Finally we unfortunatley have to talk about a transfomers Legend. Simon Furman is impossible to untangle from transformers legacy , creating Primus itself, finishign the marvel run of the book, continuing his run and ending it on his terms at idw, and launching this very continuity.
He also decided to make a massive ass of himself over this very book. See Simon has it in his head the Transformers are a genderless race. That they have no concept of it and thus are beyond it. As such he's ALWAYS hated the idea of female transformers. Can't stand them. When forced to use arcee in the uk comics he made it a stink of humans asking for a female transfomer then being offended at her design, while the autobots were confused why humanity cared about gender.
So when adding Arcee to IDW he made one of the most infamous stories in all of transformers... on the level of otptimus prime making out with a human to unlock his power, devistator's literal truk nuts or.. these guys
Tumblr media
So in IDW continuity Arcee was forcibly switched from Male to Female and torturned into insanity by the evil scientest Jhiaxus. Just reading that sentence you the astute reader can proably see the mountain of issues: Equating being a woman with torture, being trans with a mad scientst experiment, either of the above with mental illness and ptsd. It's.. ti's bad. I've read the issue and while it has been a while it wasn't great. This wasn't the INTENTION, Furman jsut wanted to explore what would happen if a genderless race was forced into a gender.
The problem Furman ignores and later would gripe about in the comments section, is that the transformers.. are male coded. They use male pronouns and cybetron made their bots traditionally masculine. It was concived as a toyline for boys in the 80's. Of course the bulk of characters are male coded. As many a commentor tried in vain to point out to furman, they are not non binary (Andrgnys was the term used), they have a concept of gender. It's why James Roberts was able to make a cast load of gay later: If the race is all male, then of course most of the relationships would be male and thus allowed him to throw in gay characters after he realized Chromedome and Rewind were less "good buddies" and more "husbands". Hence the invention of Condjux Endura and Prowl being Chromedome's bitter ex. As Roberts shows you CAN play with this gloriously, but he accepted transformers are male coded. It's why Rebecca Sugar made the Gem race in steven universe female: in addition to making a female mostly warrior race, something rare in fiction beyond sterotypes, it allowed her to easily make most of the main cast gay or pan without the censors getting pissy at first. They did eventually but the alien thing helped slide it on by.
You CAN have aliens who are genderfluid or genderless.. but the transformers just aren't. He could've made them that way, tried having the desgins tweaked, but because he can't disgnuish between a mono gender and non binary, the transformers wound up being male and the easy fix to make more cisgender female transformers was just have other cybertronian colonies. Most of transformerdom is at most mildly puzzled at the concept of a new gender and moves on. Simple.
Now as for why all this matters to windblade for those unaware Scott had a tumblr at the time , as this platform was popular at the time, and answered questions as I do. Instead of talking about various animated series from various networks, she answered questions about the upcoming book before everyone properly debuted in dark cybertron, since these things get announced months in advance. She then was asked the question: What did she think about ARcee's idw origin. Her exact response
"
What are your thoughts on the IDW Arcee origin that Furman made?
Okay, this question has come up a lot and it’s time to finally answer.
In a vacuum, Furman’s story is completely legitimate. The idea that someone is fundamentally changed against their will and struggles/rages against that is a really interesting idea. In fact, I wrote a very similar thing with the Dinobots. It taps into a deep human fear that God exists and is apathetic to/causes our pain.
Also dealing with characters that are literally alien naturally leads writers to play with/explore what aspects of humanity do and do not translate: are they alive? does Primus really equate to God if they have concrete knowledge of his existance? what does it mean to be male/female in a non-reproductive species?
The issues I have with Furman’s choice is that we don’t exist in a vacuum and the suggestion that 1. women only exist in aberration 2. being a women is inherently traumatic 3. being a women has any correlation to mental illness are extremely upsetting. Do I think Furman was trying to make a statement about human women with Arcee’s origins? No. In fact, the largest share of blame lies with the tokenization of women in the brand in general. If Arcee was one of many women transformers and she became female in this manner, it would not be an issue for women writ large (although still troubling for the transgender community). It is because she is the ONLY women (and that this story ensures that she will ALWAYS BE the only woman) that Arcee’s story becomes untenable.
Hopefully John, James and I have come up with a way around this Gordian Knot that will satisfy the fan-base, but satisfying-or-no, the most immediate imperative is to ENSURE this story does not continue to keep women readers, fans and characters at arm’s length from the brand. I’ve often said that everyone should feel that they are allowed to like Transformers and it is my complete and utter privilege to take this next step to make that happen.
TLDR version: Arcee’s origin is offensive because we don’t have any other female origins to balance it. We’re working on it, stay tuned.
PS To fans that still claim Transformers are asexual: Academically, you have legitimate standing, but practically, ask yourself this: Jazz has been voice by actors from three different races over the years. If, in the next video game, Jazz was voiced by a woman, would you feel the character had been changed at all? If so, you do not perceive Transformers to be asexual. If not, you are a rare, rare bird indeed.
I quoted it in full to illustrate a few things: Scott is nothing but respectful and even in 2014 was keenly aware of the needs of the trans community. She even started using cisgender when informed it was the proper term for Windblade. It's a very small bar but given the society we live in, it's nice a writer clears it at all. She also does not directly attack furman. She gets why he made the mistake, points it out and makes the valid point that the issue is largely that transformers barely cares about it's female fans and is working to fix that. It is a rational, well thought out response and something necessary to adress given what a clusterfuck spotlight arcee is. She responded to all of this like a rational adult. Furman's response to her
Tumblr media
Yeah Simon Furman's response to this is one of the most painful, defensive and mind boggling essays I have ever read. Furman INSISITS the transformers are genderless, cannot grasp that his work does not exist in a vaccum, and that he is not right and any mentions of the cartoon by scott or the comics irk him. He also somehow bafflingly thinks the relationships in MTMTE are metaphors
"James’ run is being rightly lauded and it had been done by using metaphors not direct correlations. Cyclonus and Tailgate’s early relationship can be viewed as a metaphor for a domestic violence situation but it is not literally that. "
... it.. it is literally that. They have romantic feelings and Cyclonus beats Tailgate at one point. It's domestic abuse. They grow past it but the way Cyclonus can treat tailgate is abusive. They.. .they can have relationships Simon. Being genderless or non binary does not = asexual or aromantic.
Mr Furman just.. genuinely DOES not get that and refuses to get that. The contrast is night and day: Scott was polite, wasn't trying to be conforntational to a colleuge, asked other communities for their imput and made a persuasive argument. Furman just cherry picks the sections of her answer that bothered him and hammers the same dumb argument again and again and onto the comments which yes I did read the bulk of.
Shockingly for early 2010's internet comments: their civil. Theirs some assholery and Furman apparently removed full on bigots. But it's a LONG stream of people telling furman he's wrong while he plugs his ears and goes THEY DON'T HAVE GENDER, OTHER MEDIA DOSEN'T MATER TO THIS VERSION EVEN THOUGH IT REFLECTS HOW PEOPLE SEE THESE CHARACTERS, I'M RIGHT JUST LET ME BE RIGHT, AT LEAST ONE WOMAN AGREED WITH ME
Tumblr media
It's a case of a creator getting so caught up in his ego he can't see other perspectives and refuses to alter his. Furman was never my hero, but I know he was a hero to many a transformers fan and it's sad he had to tank his own reputation being a defensive asshole. It's not the worst public blowup of one's rep i've seen. He isn't parading around half assed oversexualized art of women like it's some great victory like frank cho or writing heroic comics about Q of Quanon like chuck dixon. He just kinda sucks and refused to admit he was wrong and we sadly had to spend a LOT of this review talking about that.
Thankfully sad old man time is older and we can talk about how good this book is. While Windblade apparently got an eh from most I find it to be one of the best idw transformers books out of the pile i've read. While that isnt' the highest bar the fact it even nears the quality of MTMTE is praise alone. It's an excellent book about a genuinely kind and decent person with pure motives enterting a world where such a thing has been lost in a sea of war and deception. It's a wonderful four issue series that to two sequels: a decent one and an utterly fantastic one and it's under the cut.
We begin with a narration telling us it's the dawn of the new era. It's something I skipped over with MTMTE sumarizing the three pillars of this new ear: Optimus for RID, Megatron for MTMTE and Windblade for take a wild guess.
So quick catchup for those who didn't read the previous reviews or arent' as familiar with IDW Comics: The War is Over. The Autobots won.. but got nothing out of it: Cybertron is free.. but the final fight left it in a dangerous state that left Iacon the last safe harbor and all the various neutrals blaming the autobots for something that genuinely wasn't their fault. The autobots then split: Bumblebee wanted to stay and work things out, Rodimus wanted to go on a grand quest to prove his deep seated self loathing and inferority complex wrong. Optimus opted out enteriely to help with the healing.
This left cybertron in the hands of bumblebee.. who fumbled his time as leader, spending most of it getting bitched out by what were essentailly his seconds in command: Prowl, who had turned into an authortarian shithead over the years and is only going to get worse having already manipualted the lost light's command into taking a serial killer on board as prisoner, something that went about as well as you'd expect, and was such a bad person no one noticed he got mind controlled or fully bought he was. The other was Metalhawk, a self righteous asshole who constantly blamed the Autobots for fighting a war that gave him the freedom to be a self righteous asshole.
This left Cybertron with leadership no one on it wanted who bickered constantly instead of doing things. So instead.. they got Starscream. Starscream did Trumps bit before trumps: he manipulated assholes with actual problems into aiming their anger at whatever he wanted. The only differnce is Starscream has actual style. He easily slid into leadership and after Megatrons return used that to exile most of the autbots to the wilderness to die. Not in those words, unlike trump he has subtly: it was give up being an autobot or leave. Add in a giant robot picking him as robot jesus and it was pretty easy.
Starscream's reign wasn't all sunshine lollypops and rainbow cherry drops as Dark Cybertron nearly dethroned him: the reveal the prophecy of him as a god king also meant cybertron's destruction didn't go well. But since huge horrifying disasters haven't stopped politicans before, and the apocalypse was canceled, Starscream was able to skate by. He still had the NAILS and with the Autbots having saved the world, made an uneasy peace with them. None of them LIKED him but they couldnt' just dethrone him and expect cybertron to not devolve into another war.
So the autobots reluctantly left Starscream in charge and went off to do their own thing.. with a few left behind to try and live their lives and hope he dosen't blow up the planet which sounds.. totally.. t..totally unfamilar
Tumblr media
As for our heroine, Windblade was introduced during the crossover. She was sent by everyone's faviorite ace rimmer cosplayer Thunderclash along with her best friends Chromia and Nautica. These three come from Caminus. Long ago when it was an empire Cybertron spread out, sending out titans, transformers the size of cities. The concept of city sized transformers isn't new, Metroplex has existed for some time, but I like what these comics do with it, making them unfathomable giant beings. They think and feel like any bots.. but their thoughts are so massive, dense and complicated their hard to speak to.
Hence the cityspeakers, specialized transformers who can telepathically communicate with titans. It's why Windblade has her kabuki makeup: to pay homage to caminus and why Thunderclash called on her. Windblade managed to save metroplex during the crossover with the help of the lost light and her own skills, turning the tide against Shockwaves own titan.. but leaving him a badly damaged wreck. Nautica went with the lost light while Windblade stayed behind to be the voice of a city. Chromia stayed behind for windblade.
The series slowly fleshes out Windblade and Scott does so wonderfully: Windblade is an optimist, badly wanting the best for people and having come expecting cybertron to be this kind, wonderful new empire finally free from war that could help her own people. As we find out in an excellent swerve at the end of the first issue.. Caminus is not doing well. As we find out later their resources are so stretched they'll only last a hundred years if lucky.
As you can tell... that didn't happen. Windblade's story is of an idealist, a genuinely good person who has pure goals: heal metroplex, heal cybetron and hopefully in turn get Caminus better. In most other transformers works she'd be the protaganist, working with optimus and co to save the world no matter the cost even if things got murky.
But that's not the world she gets. She gets a cybetron badly damaged by the war and everything after, barely holding on, a titan that's barely functioning despite his best efforts, and a leader who openly threatens and accuses her twice not because she did anything wrong but because he can't share the spotlight. Starscream blames her for power outages and a series of bombings.
She's the perfect foil for starscream: both are jets, both are red, but both could not be more diffrent. Windblade only wants to help. She's kind compassionate and empathetic. She wants a better world for cybertron and caminus and will do what it takes. When hunting down waspinator for a lead later, her friend Chromia just.. chases after the poor guy after he bolts, who it turn sout only bolted because EVERYONE beats him up. Her response? Be genuinely contrite, kind yet firm. She gets exactly the info she needs and an ally, if one who will flee at the first time of danger.
Starscream.. well after some interviews Windblade herself puts it best
Tumblr media
Starscream is at his most evil so far here. Previously I rooted for him in RiD. He was a scumbag sure.. but he was the only COMPITENT scumbag. Prowl was a facist both with and without brainwashing, Bumblebee focused more on internal politics than helping anyone, and Metalhawk was a self righteous ass. There were other characters who were likeable, Blurr, Ironhide, Wheeljack, but none of them had any power to do anything about the world around them. It's hard not to vote for the bad guy when he's the only one actually trying. Sure he wasn't really solving cybetron's issues either, but at least he was playing the game.
Here since he's largely not gesturing for the public or metalhawk... he's a cold monster. There was a CHANCE he could've changed.. but killing metalhawk, public service or not, was the tippping point: killing the only person who for some unknown reason belivied him in was it. Winblade GENUINELY hoped he wasn't as bad as his rep or his actions.. starscream could've played her... but he dosen't want to. Starscream spent so long clawing to the top, trying to overthrow megatron, trying to worm his way to the kingship, getting declared the chosen one, he finally has everything... and he can't let himself enjoy it. Because suddenly there's a charasmatic bot who he can't just kill or banish, one who makes friends easy, and has nothing but pure motives. She's another optimus.. and he can't let that exist.
He's not so hard on windblade because he couldn't play her but because he knows the longer she's around, the more power she gets. If he can pick her off NOW while she's just a naive visitor, then he wins. And that's what fucks him over: before he played the long game, slowly earning public sympathy, getting the public's support, doing what a politican, even a complete monster whose hollowed out inside, does. He played the game. But now becaues he dosen't want to play again he's just trying to break everything he wants or sees as a remote threat.
He's still a threat himself, still easily outmaneuvers our hero at first: She finds his illicit mine? He sends goons. They survive the ambush? He throws everyone in prison and plans to frame them for his crimes. What makes starscream fascinating here is even when throwing a tantrum because baby not getting enough attention.. he's still fucking terrifying. He has windblade fucking tortured, only stopping when he realizes "No she really didn't blow herself up to get points that's a you thing". He CAN maneuver things and as seen in the climax easily fights off most of the cast and nearly kills windblade till she plugs herself into the city itself. This book does a fantastic job making starscream terrifying and despite his complexity not showing as much.. he's still engaging.
He's also what helps windblade slowly develop: She starts just trying to do the right thing.. but quickly proves to be far more capable, far more badass and far more of a fighter and manipulator than Starscream could've imagined. The second she realizes he's actively trying to kill her... she stops seeing the best in him. I mean think about it.. all it took was one day of her taking him seriously as a threat and she finds out he has a mining operation to find an ore tha twould make him invincible, makes allies easy because no one like starscream and easily revolts even escaping jail. He still comes CLOSE to beating her.. but in a day she has proof off his crimes, has proven she can protect that proof. It's a throughly engaging back and forth: Windblade may be mildly outnumbered.. but she's not giving up. She may speak for the city.. but she can damn well fight for it. She still has lessons to learn like her foes can fly, but she learns them as she goes.
She also gets a hard truth in the big twist.. and it's one I have mixed feelings on. Starscream is not behind the bombings. Nor is his minion rattrap and since we're on the topic I do like IDW rattrap to a point, but I liked him more when he was more weasely and spineless, as it fit early beast wars rattrap's characterization than a torturing monster. I also questoin why IDW only trickled in two beast wars characters at all. Glad to have them but it's still just.. why. You have a massive franchise to mine why are you like this.
Back on topic this brings us to our third lead.. and our secondary Villian, Chromia. Chromia is seemingly windblade's only friend besides ironhide at first, her bodyguard, her best friend and perhaps more. I do TRY not to pair up every remotely romantic friendship I see.. but int his ecase.. Chormia tries to open a space bridge, endagering all or cybetron... to save Windblade> She also talks about seeing enough of her tail fans, aka her ass. There.. isn't a straight explination for either thing.
Chromia is a mixed bag mostly because the series bein gshort.. dosent' really have time to unpack it and I don't remember the followups really doing much to do so. Windblade's best freind betrays her in a horrific way and we just.. don't get time to process it. Maybe when I revisit the other series, as I intend to, we'll get a better arc.
I do like the position it puts windblade in for the climax. It complete's the journey she's been on.. as she plays starscream. His silence and stopping the mining shit.. and in exchange.. other worlds. Caminus isn't the ONLY colony and when theyf ind them.. he can have the credit. It's her using her good nature.. to play his game. She geninely just wants a better world. CYbetron won't last, caminus won't last... so who cares who the fuck gets the credit. It also gives her time WITHOUT him trying to murder her. She takes the blame for Chromia not to save her entirely, but because it puts her in a better positoin: Starscream THINKS he has dirt on her, and while she'd take the fall if it happens, she has dirt on him. It's sneaky, underhanded.. but it feels way more organic than the supposdely "grey" actions of the autbots last series. Windblade is doing something shady.. but it's the only way to buy herself and caminus time. She can deal with starscream later. Right now she just wants a better world. And it's a question of CAN she keep up with this kind of thing and if so what will that make her? And it's a question we'll answer eventually.
So some scatterd thoughts. The art by sarah stone is fucking gorgeous. Truly amazing stuff. Nice digital work. It's expressive and cartoony but the line work and ink make it feel raw and real: it let's the transfromers be bold nad colorful.. but the skethciness helps underline how dark the story is.
I love the idea of the titans, them being these big larger than life beings.. and of metroplex, being a kind friend who adores his speaker and in her darkest hour helps pull her out. I also like the message of this: speakers are supposed to subsume themselves, be one with the city and answer only to others.. but windblade wins by being herself and selfless. By being a person, not consumed by duty but still bound to it. Being a cityspeaker is part of her.. but she is not metroplex. She is his friend. And she will fight for him.
Windblade.. is a masterpiece. Going over it again three times, ocne to read it, once for the first draft and again when that draft mostly done got ate by tumblr, it shows off just what a fantastic book this is. The pacing probably coudl've been slowed down a tad, but I get it. This was the pilot. The series would sadly always get punched with pacing, with the next one opening on a crossover we'll get to, the one after having to bridge series fast and till all are one having to wrap up quicker because IDW impulsively decided to reboot everything. Despite all this windblade is excellent and you should go find it in some corner of the internet while we wait for IDW to republish it. I"m pulling for you, we're all in this together.

Neo's Hecate = The Triple Goddess
Trivia is the Roman name of Hecate, Goddess of witchcraft, crossroads and ghosts. Neopolitan is Roman's Hecate, so her birth name is Trivia. Is that really all there is?
Tumblr media
Obviously not. Or at least, Neo's allusion to Hecate can be read in multiple ways. Sure, it might have been an unplanned reference, but by this point (either willingly or not) Neopolitan has grown into Hecate's role. So, let's analyze ice-cream's girl allusion to better understand her story, with a focus on volume 9.
WHO IS HECATE?
Hecate is a Greek Goddes, who is later adopted by the Romans with the name of Trivia. Her origin is probably more ancient than Greek culture, though. In short, she is a foreign deity, who gets integrated into Greek religion. Similarly, Neopolitan is an unplanned character shoved into the narrative. However, she finds her place in the story and grows into herself.
Here are some of Hecate's most famous attributes.
Hecate is the Goddess of crossroads and magic. In particular, she is the master of darkness and the queen of ghosts to the point she is linked to nechromancy. She also rules over demons called Empusas, who are half woman and half beast (either a cow or a dog usually). They eat human blood and are linked to fire. Finally, Hecate is a psychopomp deity (like Hermes/Mercury), so she moves freely among Earth (human world), Olympus (world of the gods) and Hades (world of the deads).
Hecate is often depicted with three bodies and three heads:
Tumblr media
She holds torches and keys, which are symbolic of her ability to guide people in the underworld and to travel among dimensions. Sometimes, she can appear as a dog, which is her sacred animal.
Hecate is one of the Goddesses associated to the moon. In particular, she is the falling moon to Artemis's crescent moon and Selene's full moon. According to other traditions, she is a part of Artemis/Diana. This Goddess is the Moon in the Sky, Artemis on Earth and Hecate in the Underworld. Whatever the case, both Artemis and Hecate have a triple nature to them.
This triple nature makes Hecate an example of Triple Goddess in modern Neopagan religions. The Triple Goddess is the archetype of a female deity linked to the three phases of a woman's life. Youth (Maiden), Maturity (Mother) and Old Age (Crone). Her male counterpart is the Horned God.
As you see, Hecate is hard to define. Just like Neo. Both are ambiguous and difficult to grasp. Still, let's try to understand ice-cream girl better by using this mysterious Goddess. Let's focus on three things (obviously :P):
Hecate's link to the number 3 and how it is used in Neo's story
Hecate and Artemis's bond and how it mirrors Neo and Ruby's
Hecate's imagery and attributes and what they mean for Neo
The first is an analysis of Neo's interiority (microchosm). The second explains Neo's role in the story (macrochosm). The third offers a synthesis and a conclusion (balance).
RULE OF THREE (MICROCHOSM)
Hecate is known for her three heads and three bodies. Neo is a normal human, but the number 3 still comes up in her design:
Tumblr media
Pink, white and brown. Strawberry, vanilla and chocolate. The three flavours of the Neapolitan ice cream. The three sides of Neo's self:
We are ruled by thirds. In fashion we compare no more than three colors. Our personalities are defined by the id, the ego and the super-ego- always warring vying for control. But our goal is harmony. Balance. (Roman Holiday, chapter 13)
According to Freud, the human mind is made of three parts. The id is where fear and wishes lie. It is a primitive and instinctive force. The superego is society’s expectations. It is where morality and ideals are. The ego is what balances the other two parts. It mediates between wishes and duties.
As per Roman Holiday, Neo is a combination of Neopolitan (pink), Vanille (white) and Trivia (brown). So, Neo's color scheme is a metaphorical representation of id, superego and ego:
Pink represents the id - Neopolitan is Trivia's pink imaginary friend. She embodies everything the child is forced to repress, like her pink eye and her wish for freedom.
White represents the superego - Vanille is Trivia's surname and a shade of white. The Vanilles want their daughter to fit into society and despise her disability, which makes her "odd".
Brown represents the ego - Trivia has brown hair, wears brown clothes and a brown contact lens. She is conflicted between her parents' expectations and her own wishes.
In her childhood, Trivia is unbalanced because her family forces her to repress her id. She cancels her pink side and projects it on her imaginary friend Neopolitan. So, Trivia undergoes a transformation and claims this part of herself back:
As the old saying went, “You can’t put the moon back together”. At times you had to destroy something to make something even better in its place. When Mama had shattered Neopolitan in front of their burning house, Trivia finally understood that she had been broken all along. Losing her friend was Trivia’s first step toward putting herself back together and embracing her true, best self. (Roman Holiday, chapter 11)
She re-arranges herself and her three parts:
Pink becomes the color of Neo's ego (her truest self). She stops hiding her eye and dyes half of her hair pink. Similarly, she embraces her Neopolitan persona more.
Brown becomes the color of the superego. It is a color linked to Neo's female authority figures like her mother (Carmel) and her teacher (Beatrix Browning). It is still present in Neo's color scheme, but much reduced. Similarly, Trivia is still there, but feels more like a mask than Neo's real self.
White becomes the color of the id. It is the color of Neo's family name, which she sheds. However, Neo still loves her parents, so her semblance dyes a lock of her hair white as an unconscious response to their death.
Roman Holiday is the story of Trivia Vanille's death and Neopolitan's birth:
As far as she was concerned, Trivia Vanille was buried under that mess, too. Neopolitan was the sole survivor. (Roman Holiday, chapter 26)
Neo leaves behind her parents and their strict rules to become a living manifestation of the id:
She just wanted to do whatever she wanted. And for the moment, what she wanted was to help Roman set the world on fire. (Roman Holiday, chapter 26)
Neopolitan does whatever she wants, even if it hurts others. She embraces her deepest wishes and chaotic emotions. This is the character we meet at the beginning of RWBY.
Well, Neo's arc in the series is to discard this person and to become someone new once again. After all, Neopolitan's name is linked to renewal and transformation. "Neopolitan" comes from Naples, which means "new city" (neo + polis). Naples's fantastic origin itself is a story of death and rebirth. According to the legend, this Italian city is born from a Siren, who dies for love. Her body transforms into the city and gives new life.
Similarly, Neo is a character able to be reborn countless times (neo = new + poly= many). So is Hecate, whose name may refer to the Greek number 100, as the Goddess is said to have one-hundred forms.
Our Neo/Hecate is then a multifaceted force, who goes through destruction just to embrace creation.
Neo's change in the series starts with a loss:
Tumblr media
She loses both Roman and her inner balance:
There was one thing To help escape the misery And now it's all disarrayed You took my whole life away You sent me back to nothing Now you'll pay
So, she needs to rebuild herself once again:
We must live with balance But balance is blind (Lost her world) Vengeance is a riptide In a fairy tale, she'll find Inside A new me, I'm ready But who will I find? Inside I've gotta let go but could I lose my mind?
Volume 9 is where this inner transformation takes place. This time the new found harmony among id, superego and ego is not described by Neo's three colors. Rather, allusions are used.
In the Ever After, Neo is associated to three different Wonderland / Through the Looking Glass characters:
The Hatter, who represents the id
The Cheshire Cat, who represents the superego
The Jabberwocky, who represents the ego
THE HATTER - THE ID
Tumblr media
“Well, I'd hardly finished the first verse," said the Hatter, "when the Queen bawled out 'He's murdering the time! Off with his head!'" "How dreadfully savage!" exclaimed Alice. "and ever since that," the Hatter went on in a mournful tone, "he wo'n't do a thing I ask! It's always six o'clock now.”
The Hatter is a Wonderland and Through The Looking Glass character. He is famous for the Mad Tea Party, where he, the March Hare and the Dormouse chat with Alice. The original book reveals that the Hatter "killed time" while singing, so Time refuses to run normally for him and his friends. As a result, they are stuck in an eternal tea-party, as it is always tea-time for them. In the 1951 Disney movie, instead, he celebrates Alice's unbirthday.
Neopolitan has been stuck in time since Roman's death. She can't move on, so she focuses all her energies on revenge:
So close to closure The one thing you need Underneath a monument with a dedicated plea
Killing Ruby becomes Neo's One Thing to the point she organizes a special tea party of her own:
Tumblr media
Ruby's unbirthday party, to be precise:
Cinder: And you… should have never been born…
Where she can dissolve Little Red in a cup, as if she were a sugar cube:
Tumblr media
Kill for kill Eye for eye Blood for blood It's time to die Retribution tastes so sweet
The Hatter is a hostage in his tea party and Neo is a prisoner of her revenge. Both are consumed by their inability to go on. Both have killed time and can't face their future.
In Neo's case, the reason why she murders time is pretty clear. It is a coping mechanism to avoid grief:
Tumblr media
In Wonderland, the Hatter can drink tea at every hour. In her fantasy world, Neo can stay with Roman forever:
Neo-Roman: Y’know once Neo realized where she was, everything changed. Always loved the idea of a place to run away from it all. Do whatever you want. I offered that to her back on Remnant.
This is also why the first thing Neo does after landing in the Ever After is to evolve Overactive Imagination and to kill the Jabberwalker:
Tumblr media
The creature is symbolic of death, as they kill Afterans permanently. So, Neo metaphorically negates her grief (the Jabberwalker) through illusions (her semblance).
At the same time, Neo enters the Ever After and gives in to her id. She has her desires and instincts control her completely. She loses all filters:
(Then suddenly) Scratched through the surface And you've found a key Unlocking what you thought was safe inside a box But it's somehow been set free (Finally)
Overactive Imagination's evolution is a physical representation of this psychological process. Neo spirals throughout Mistral and Atlas, but in volume 9 she hits rock bottom and stops acting rationally. She becomes the incarnation of her anger, which manifests through her semblance. Her illusions are typically silent. However, in the Ever After they speak, as Neo is letting her inner voices out of the box:
Say something real Do you only speak in riddles, chatterbox? I'm waiting for your ugly mouth to spit it out
This is why she becomes a chatterbox. She tries to communicate through her creations.
In particular, she makes an imaginary Roman (the Hatter), who looks and sounds like the real deal. He becomes the dominant voice in Neo's mind and speaks to and for her. His presence highlights Neo's inability to accept Roman's death. She hides in a lie. Just like Trivia used to cower behind her imaginary friend Neopolitan. As a child, Trivia can't accept Neo is a part of her. As an adult, Neo can't accept Roman isn't with her anymore. In this way, Neo's first real human connection gets reduced to an imaginary friend. This is the tragedy of Neo's adventure in the Ever After.
All happens because Neo surrenders herself to the id (her inner world). Still, it can't last forever. The id is a powerful source of energy and drive, but it is also destructive. So, Neo self-consumes until she has nothing left:
Neo-Roman: (voice in Neo’s head) You’ve finally done it! Little Red’s gone. With your Semblance stronger than ever now, we can take over this whole absurd place! Why not? Offing Little Red can’t be all you wanted… Right?
She puts so much into destroying Ruby, that she ends up empty. A vessel for others to take advantage of.
Curious Cat: You’ve lost something most important, haven’t you? And now you have nothing left. How delightful! An empty host, perfect for me to fill.
THE CHESHIRE CAT - THE SUPEREGO
Tumblr media
The Cheshire Cat appears twice in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. The first time, he guides Alice at a crossroad and points her towards the March Hare's house. The second time, he appears at the Queen of Heart's croquet game as a giant head. The Queen and King are offended by his presence and want to behead him. Still, he is a head without a body, so the execution of this death sentence is complicated. Eventually, he simply fades away and disappears.
The character is inspired by the saying "grinning like a Cheshire Cat", whose origin is unknown. Among the many hypothesis, there is one about a grinning cat-shaped cheese. The cheese was cut from the tail, so that the last part eaten was the head of the smiling cat.
In RWBY, the character who alludes to the Cheshire Cat is not Neo, but the Curious Cat. Still, Neo and the Cat's stories are intertwined, as they destroy each other. The Cat possesses Neo and Neo kills the Cat.
Both characters eat and get eaten. They eat like the two wolves of Ruby's Little Red Riding Hood. They get eaten like the cat-shaped cheese, until only a floating head remains. A head separated from the body. A mind detached from reality:
“We’re all mad here. I’m mad. You’re mad.” “How do you know I’m mad?” said Alice. “You must be,” said the Cat, or you wouldn’t have come here.”
Neo and the Cat are mad, so they meet in the Ever After. However, their madnesses are opposite:
Neo loses herself in fantasy (the Ever After) and runs away from the real world (Remnant). She lets her unconscious feelings (id) run wild.
The Curious Cat is trapped in fantasy (the Ever After) and wants to reach the real world (Remnant). They are consumed by an imposed purpose (superego):
Curious Cat: I’m not like the other Afterans here, I’m cursed with curiosity. I need to know everything!
Blacksmith: A terrible thing to have a broken heart… And there’s nobody to send them (the Cat) back to the Tree for repair.
So, Neo and the Cat are foils, which is why they share the song Chatterbox. Both blabber non-stop. However, Neo's illusions speak her truest self. The Curious Cat instead uses smart words to hide their real intentions. Neo shows her inner beast (the shadow), while the Cat wears a mask (persona). So, Neo is the embodyment of the id and the Cat is her estranged superego. They are an external force, who comes and takes control of Neo's life:
Tumblr media
The possession is a metaphor of Neo's state of mind. She goes from moving many characters around to becoming a controlled puppet. From shouting to radio silence. This switch is conveyed through the Curious Cat speaking through and for her.
This is Neo's nightmare, as her life is a struggle to be heard. Among other things, Neo refuses devices that make her sound robotic. She dislikes artificial voices because they sound fake to her. And yet, the Curious Cat forces Neo to speak their words. The Cat becomes Neo's new voice.
This is the result of Neo losing her inner drive:
NeoCat: She has no attachments to your world. Nothing to return to.
She is left with no wishes nor fears. She is a living id, who transforms into a walking superego. However, both extremes are wrong. A person is made of both her id and her superego. Both parts are needed to make an individual, which is why Neo is asked to face herself once more:
Tumblr media
The Tree has the girl confront the pain and grief she has been ignoring. And yet, these feelings are what saves her:
NeoCat: No! These cracks, these feelings! I can’t… I can’t!!!
Thanks to them Neo gets back in control of her life. Symbolically, the Jabberwalker she kills in the beginning appears to finish the Cat off:
Tumblr media
In this way, the cycle is complete and Neo's ego can finally surface.
JABBERWOCKY - THE EGO
Tumblr media
Beware the Jabberwock, my son! The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!
The Jabberwocky is a nonsense poem Alice finds in Through The Looking Glass. She initially can't read it, but then she realizes the verses are written in mirror-writing. She holds a mirror to the text and the poem appears. Despite being able to read it, though, Alice can't understand it:
"It seems very pretty," she said when she had finished it, "but it's rather hard to understand!" (You see she didn't like to confess, even to herself, that she couldn't make it out at all.) "Somehow it seems to fill my head with ideas—only I don't exactly know what they are! However, somebody killed something: that's clear, at any rate."
The poem conveys two main ideas:
It tells about a slaughter:
He took his vorpal sword in hand: Long time the manxome foe he sought— So rested he by the Tumtum tree, And stood awhile in thought. And as in uffish thought he stood, The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame, Came whiffling through the tulgey wood, And burbled as it came! One, two! One, two! And through and through The vorpal blade went snicker-snack! He left it dead, and with its head He went galumphing back.
It is impossible to understand, as it is full of gibberish and invented words
This is true for RWBY's Jabberwalker, as well:
They embody death, as Afterans killed by this creature are negated ascension
They jabber as they walk, which is why they fail to communicate with others
How does this relate to Neo? She kills the Jabberwalker, but assimilates them in her illusions. This happens because the creature is Neo's mirror. They reflect our Hecate in the making.
The Jabberwalker is a monster of grief who dies unheard:
Jabberwalker: Stop… It… Cease! No! NO! NOOOOOO!
Neo is a villain whose grief stays unrecognized:
Ruby: If you’re looking for an apology, you’ve wasted your time!
Not only by others, but by Neo too. She kills a part of herself in the Jabberwalker. Her most vulnerable and real part, that wants to communicate:
Say something real Do you only speak in riddles, chatterbox? I'm waiting for your ugly mouth to Say something real Do you only speak in riddles, chatterbox? I'm waiting on your ugly mouth to spit it out
She is a chatterbox that screams, but is not listened to. She can't talk, then she gains the ability to speak through her semblance. And yet, she can only be heard. Never understood. Similarly, Alice eventually learns how to read the Jabberwocky poem, but doesn't comprehend it.
This is why the Chatterbox song is so mysterious. Is it about Neo? The Cat? Both? Who sings what? Are they singing to each other? Or is it Ruby singing to them? It is impossible to say, just like it is impossible to grasp the full meaning of the Jabberwocky.
So, this song is about Neo and the Cat, but plays while RWBYJ fight the Jabberwalker. That is because the monster represents Neo's frammented self. They are the girl's ego, which is so broken and confused she herself negates it. Her journey in the Ever After, though, helps Neo find inner clarity:
(Waiting for it Sugar-coated All you need is here Come and find what Redefines you Make it crystal clear)
By the end she sees herself crystal clear:
Neo-Roman: To have what they have. What a thing, huh?
Her true wish is the same as ever. She wants a real connection. To succeed she has to let go of an imaginary one:
Tumblr media
As a child, Trivia lets go of Neopolitan and finds Roman. As an adult, she lets go of Roman to find someone else. Trivia dies and Neo is born. Neo dies and someone new is born:
Blacksmith: She will have the chance to return her broken heart… And becomes something new. Such is balance.
Life from death. Creation from destruction. This is what transformation is. Symbolically, Neo kills all her three parts. She murders the Jabberwalker (ego), she rips the Curious Cat to shreds (superego) and finally releases Roman's illusion (id). Now, she is ready to move on.
HECATE AND ARTEMIS = SHADOW AND LIGHT (MACROCHOSM)
Tumblr media
Hecate/Trivia and Artemis/Diana are two intertwined Goddesses. In particular, Hecate is sometimes described as a part of Artemis's triple identity. This Goddess is:
The Moon in the Sky (The Crescent Moon to be precise)
Artemis/Diana on Earth (Goddess of hunt)
Hecate/Trivia in the Underworld
Doesn't it remind you of anyone?
Tumblr media
Ruby is
Associated with the Crescent Moon (Crescent Rose)
The best Huntress of all
A Red Grim Reaper with a Scythe
She is the Artemis (Crescent Moon) to Neo's Hecate (Falling Moon). This is why Neo's role in volume 9 is to play Ruby's Jungian Shadow:
In analytical psychology, the shadow is an unconscious aspect of the personality that does not correspond with the ego ideal, leading the ego to resist and project the shadow. In short, the shadow is the self's emotional blind spot, projected as archetypes.
The shadow is everything that is repressed or hidden. In Ruby's case that is her emotions over loss and grief. So, Neo becomes what links Ruby to these feelings of death. Just like Hecate/Trivia is the part of Artemis/Diana, who appears in the Underworld. This is why Neo and Ruby fall together in the Ever After.
During their fall, Neo transforms in three people Ruby cherishes: Oscar, Yang and Penny. What do they represent?
They are linked to future, present and past. In particular, Oscar is waiting for Ruby outside (future), Yang is in the Ever After with Ruby (present) and Penny is lost (past).
They are the three people Ruby's conflict is focused on in the Atlas Arc. In volume 7, Ruby disagrees with Oscar on telling Ironwood. In volume 8, Ruby and Yang fight over what to do. In volume 9, Ruby must overcome Penny's death.
These two meanings are linked to two roles Neo fulfills towards Ruby. That of Triple Goddess and that of Goddess of crossroads.
1- The idea of past, present and future ties into Hecate being a Triple Goddess:
Tumblr media
The fates are a representation of this Goddess and a declination of the Three Hecate Sisters, also known as Maiden, Mother and Crone. They are archetypes linked to three different phases of life. Youth, maturity and old age. In other words, past, present and future.
As Ruby's Hecate, Neo often brings up past, present and future throughout volume 9. Here is a quick list:
Ruby and Neo's fall in the Ever After (Penny is past, Yang is present and Oscar is future)
Ruby's first meeting with the Blacksmith, which is followed by the appearance of Neo's Jabberwalkers. There Ruby sees three weapons. Penny's sword is Ruby's inner child (past). Alyx's knife is the role Ruby is currently trying to fulfill (present). Summer's axe is who Ruby wishes to become (future)
Ruby's fight with Neo's Jabberwalker, where Ruby hallucinates three people. Cinder is the foe Ruby lost to (past). Penny is her current inner demon (present). Salem is the villain Ruby must eventually face (future)
Neo's crazy tea party, where Neo destroys Ruby by using three loved ones. Penny is a dead friend (past), Oscar is a friend Ruby could kill (future) and Little is a friend that dies (present)
Past, present and future haunt Ruby, so that she can accept who she was, understand who she is and move towards who she will be:
Past Ruby: So, are you a Huntress? Like the ones you read about in books? Ruby: I… I don’t know… Past Ruby: They always saved the day, didn’t they? Always knew what to do. Always won in the end. Ruby: But… life isn’t like a fairy tale… Past Ruby: That’s right! It’s up to you to make things better, isn’t it? Everything all depends on you! Your sister needs you, your friends need you, the whole world needs you to keep fighting, forever and ever, against an invincible monster that took your mother! Past Ruby: Mom was the best… but even she failed. That doesn’t seem fair. None of this seems fair. Ruby: But… What am I supposed to do…? Past Ruby: You can do whatever you want. Be whoever you want! You don’t even have to be Ruby Rose… So, what are you gonna be?
2- Neo brings to the surface Ruby's inner conflicts. She starts with the three struggles Ruby faces in Atlas and she keeps going by using her Jabberwalkers to re-create Atlas's destruction twice:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Finally, she has Ruby fight her inner demons all at once:
Neo-Ironwood: Who were you to think you knew what was best for Atlas? Neo-Pyrrha: I was the best and brightest Beacon had to offer. But I traded my life so my friends could live! Neo-Penny: Just like you were too late to save me at the Vytal Festival… I died in Atlas too, didn’t I? (walks towards Ruby) Can you imagine what that's like? To be completely and utterly failed… time and again… (kneels down to Ruby) by someone who meant the world to you… Neo-Pyrrha: How many more people are going to die because of you?! Ruby: I’m trying to save everyone! Neo-Ironwood: And yet with all your best intentions… Have you ever stopped to wonder if you’d done more harm than good?! Ruby: It’s not my fault…! Neo-Ozpin: How many more lives do you have to ruin before you realize you’re not cut out to save anyone?! Ruby: NO!!!
This happens because Neo is a manifestation of Ruby's id. Just like Hecate is a Goddess linked with crossroads and choice, Neo forces Ruby to transform.
Ruby's hidden self and her conflictual feelings are intertwined in Neo, who is the part of herself Ruby refuses to aknowledge until it explodes.
Let's juxtapose these two scenes:
Ruby: What is this about? The White Fang? Roman Torchwick?
Ruby: Is that seriously what this is all about? You still blame me for what happened to Torchwick?!
In volume 4, Ruby asks Tyrian why he is after her and mentions Torchwick. In volume 9, Ruby is surprised Roman's partner wants to avenge him. This happens because throughout Mistral and Atlas, Ruby starts shouldering too much responsibilities by herself. Her whole ego becomes intertwined with the duty to stop Salem. By doing so, she neglects other parts of the self:
Maria: You know, you don't give yourself enough credit. Ruby: Oh… Thanks. Maria: That wasn't a compliment.
Which leads to the shadow suffering and festering. Inside Ruby, the shadow is her grief and trauma. Outside, the shadow is Neo. A secondary villain with a revenge agenda, which is nothing compared to the threath Salem represents. And yet, Neo's personal grudge grows until she becomes dangerous for Ruby's own existence:
Neo-Roman: You don’t deserve to die, Red. You deserve to be broken down… Torn apart… wiped from existence.
In this context, Ruby refusing to empathize with Neo is really Ruby refusing to empathize with herself:
Give me anything But this symphony of technicolor rage You call it righteous, meaningful It's anything but love Don't take me for a fool I know this all too well so Leave your tears to someone else cuz It's not just you who lost it all
Neo kills the Jabberwalker because she doesn't want to accept Roman's loss. Ruby doesn't see Neo because it would mean to look at her own pain.
The end result is bad for both girls. On the one hand Ruby is overwhelmed by trauma and chooses to disappear. On the other hand Neo realizes how empty she is after Ruby is gone. That is because shadow and light can't live without each other. They need to integrate, which is what Ruby and Neo do by the end.
Both see themselves more clearly, so they are finally able to empathize with each other:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Their conflict almost kills them, but once they get throught it they are ready to become better versions of themselves. They die and are reborn:
Tumblr media
Since she had used her Semblance for the first time to create a butterfly with one pink wing, one brown, with white spots all over- then sent it out her bedroom window and watched it flutter away until she lost sight of it and let it go. (Roman Holiday, chapter 11)
Like two butterflies, who step into a brand new phase of their lives.
HECATE (BALANCE)
Neo's story is about finding balance inside and outside:
Inside- As a child, Neo is too repressed (superego), so as an adult she becomes uncontrolled (id). Her arc has her grow more balanced (ego).
Outside - In volume 9, Neo is Ruby's shadow (id) and brings out all of Ruby's negative emotions. By the end, though, Ruby is able to understand Neo and feels sympathy for her. This is because our LRRH doesn't refuse her own shadow anymore.
In other words, Neo is an id character, who has to integrate both with herself and with the world around her. This fits Hecate, who is a Goddess linked to the Underworld. The Ever After itself is a representation of this kingdom for three different reasons:
It is the world before (under) Remnant
It is the world of the deads (buried under)
It is the world of the unconscious (buried inside)
This is why Neo's semblance grows more powerful while there. Hecate is the queen of ghosts and Neo grows powerful enough to rule the Ever After with her materialized spirits (illusions). On a deeper level, our lady of the deads must face her own grief. So, like other characters, Neo goes through the stages of grief. In particular, Neo's stages are represented by her reactions to different characters:
The Jabberwalker she kills (negation)
Ruby she stalks and tortures (rage)
The Roman she materializes (bargaining)
The Curious Cat she is controlled by (depression)
All these meetings are a part of her journey to find both acceptance and herself. Maybe this is why throughout volume 9 she progressively becomes more and more Hecate-like. As a matter of fact, she aquires many attributes of the mysterious Goddess.
She gains her personal Empusas:
Tumblr media
The Empusas are Hecate's demons, who look like girls with some odd body parts. In this case, Neo's heterocromia.
Tumblr media
The Empusas are usually monsters linked to fire that appear as half-dogs. Here, Ruby sees the Jabberwalker with Cinder's head.
She finds her own Horned God:
Tumblr media
The Horned God is the Triple Goddess's companion in neopagan religions. The Jabberwalker is a horned creature associated with Neo.
She commands a pack of dogs (the Jabberwalkers) and she herself plays the part of Ruby's dangerous wolf. This fits with Hecate's sacred animals being dogs.
Finally, she stands beside a wicked torch:
Tumblr media
Torchwick-illusion is her companion in the Underworld and a symbol of her friend's lost soul. She even uses Roman's voice to lead Ruby towards death. Just like Hecate holds torches to guide mortals in the Kingdom of the Deads.
Despite all this, there is still an attribute missing: keys. They represent Hecate's ability to travel through worlds. However, Neo is stuck in the Ever After:
Jaune: So Neo can’t go through the door…
This happens because she has still to fully bloom into Hecate (herself). However, she is making progress and by the end of volume 9 she reaches acceptance. A necessary step to grow.
In particular, she dispels her illusion of Roman. She overcomes her grief by overcoming her own fantasies. This is interesting because it is the opposite of what happens in Roman Holiday:
“He caught a lock of her hair and showed it to her. It was white. “This is new. It suits you,” he said. Why would she have done that with her Semblance?” (Roman Holiday, chapter 26)
There, she represses her sadness over her parents' death, which manifests in her illusory white lock of hair. In the series, though, she lets go of an illusion to move on. Why is that so? That is because Neo herself is a combination of illusion and reality:
“Roman shook his head. “Show them who you really are.” Neo changed back into herself, but swapper her school uniform for her favourite suite. Roman handed her her parasol. (Roman Holiday, chapter 22)
Roman Holiday is the story of how she realizes illusions are a part of who she is. Volume 9 is where she learns she can't live in a world made only of illusions. So, she chooses to face herself for real:
Tumblr media
Once she emerges from the Tree, she will gain her allusion's ability to move freely between dimensions (psychopomp) and will go through the door. She will leave her fantastical world (the Ever After) and come back to reality (Remnant).

I'm mad Tumblr ate my anon asks (it's not appearing in my Drafts????) but luckily I have a copy saved to my email so:
Tumblr media
HEY YOUR DRACULA ANIMATIC IS SO SO GOOD I can't comment on youtube (bc I have no account) but I've watched it like 10 times now, the song fits so well and the art is incredible, I love all your character designs and the way you portray all the scenes is so spot on!
I just finished re: dracula and idk how you managed to tell the whole story so well in under 4 minutes but it was amazing I love the way you use color in the animatic, the use of mostly black/white/grey is so good for evoking the specific type of horror story this is, and it makes the red in the blood and in dracula's eyes stick out in a way that is absolutely brilliant and that last shot with the sunset is GORGEOUS and then the epilogue!!! I love that you did the epilogue to and having the gentle piano music and doing it in full color gives it such a peaceful and comforting feeling, the drawing of quincey and lucy in it in the afterlife together is so sweet <3 the detail that went into this is amazing, like the captain of the demeter having the rosary even though we only see it for a second, I keep wanting to pause on every single frame so I can properly admire all the cool art lol, also the things like jonathan's beard growing out after dracula breaks the mirror, and the rosary hanging above his bed, and dracula still having the scar from the shovel in the final showdown
AND THE PART WHERE DRACULA CATCHES THE LETTER... literally the way you tell the whole story with (almost) NO WORDS in not even 4 minutes and the whole thing flows so smoothly is incredible I love the way you do like the zoom out thing on some places, it adds a whole new dimension to it visually also the way you draw mina and jonathan after the october 3rd bit is lovely, your jonathan looks so cool with the white hair and i love how you did mina's scar, and the part where her scar disappears at the end was such a cool way to depict that and the difference between human lucy and vampire lucy is done so well, like it's so clearly the same character but you can really see how she's not herself anymore, and the way you used that when they kill vampire lucy and show arthur's resolve to use the stake bc he's now seeing her as a monster who replaced and essentially killed the woman he loved and he wants revenge, literally I will never be over how much story and emotion you managed to fit into a single music video and the way you did quincey's death? crying at that part tbh.
AND THE FRAME OF DRACULA GETTING BEHEADED WITH THE RED BACKGROUND.... IS JUST *chef's kiss* I was going to say I have no words for how much I love this but clearly I have quite a lot of words lol, thank you tumblr for not having a character limit anyway have a good day/night :)
Anon I'm so sorry for this delayed reply,,, I kept rereading this in awe and didn't want to release it into the wild (and it still got eaten anyways-)
I'm so glad you enjoyed the character design!! It's not my strong suit at all so that's reassuring. The colour scheme lowkey started out as a timesaving measure, but it also allowed for me to render scenes with detail that I otherwise couldn't've with the tight time frame I had, since at the time I was also juggling university assignments. I'm glad the sunset scene hit as hard as it did, since I had also just discovered Disco Elys/ium, so it was an attempt to emulate Rostov's illustration of Harry on Filippe III's statue). It worked out in the end anyways, since the grayscale + red accent combined with a colourful epilogue gave a "the horror is now in the past, and we are in a (literally visually) livelier future)" <3
I've seen so many people say they want to pause on each frame to examine it in detail, and guess what, you can get a zip file of them all as watermarkless pngs in my kofi! For free! It's pay-what-you-want since I just really wanted to get as many eyes on this as possible, but any tips would definitely still be appreciated.
It was fun mapping out the match cuts and transitions e.g Dracula catching the letter, Mina and Dracula with Lucy in the churchyard, since the previous semester I'd taken a storyboarding class that taught that, so I HAD to include it. Zoom outs helped add visual interest to otherwise still shots, so I'm glad they didn't come off as overdone haha.
It was tough mapping out what storybeats to include, but I'm super happy that the angst for all the key moments in the video hit right :D Was worried about losing momentum after leaving the Jonathan in Dracula's castle bit, and so I really wanted the ending of each verse(?) to correspond with a red screen injury— notice that "you'd better let yourself off and, while you still have strength in your legs, escape from this horrible hell/你最好放过自己 趁双脚还有力气, 快逃出这可怕地狱" always ends with some character harming another, and when the verse repeats again but with the ending lyrics changed "you’d better let yourself off, rather than crying out to another, “Save me!”... Save me!/你最好放过自己 胜过跟谁叫救命... 救命!", it still ends with Van Helsing staking the 3 vampire women. And of course, the ending "escape from this horrible hell/快逃出这可怕地狱" ends with the sunset, its red now replacing that of the blood the characters had to spill previously, signalling an end to their necessary monstrosity (and also a literal monster with Dracula dying).
Like with the frame of Dracula getting beheaded, the timesaving measures, limited skills (plus lack of any sort of storyboarding software, I was just ""animating"" the movements with Shotcut) forced me to find creative workarounds. I could fill at least 3 pages with writing dissecting all my choices lol but idt therell be much interest in me analysing my own art. Thank you so much for watching my animatic :)

The Acolyte episode 1 is so fucking good, part 2
scene change with dramatic, disorienting camera tilt! our assassin seems to be waking up from a nightmare, and have a new haircut. she is on a spaceship - after a timeskip? was the opening a flashback, a Force vision? what was she dreaming about?
Tumblr media
she touches the very spot on her chest where Indara was stabbed in the opening. (very cool observation by @flythesail!)
Tumblr media
her living space is muted in both color and light. combined with her uneasy sleep we get the sense she isn't in a good place in her life.
we see her worktable filled with tools, right in her bedroom, immediately recognizing her as a mechanic (and perhaps in a bad living situation). a little droid greets her enthusiastically, and her demeanor changes right away to sunny and amused. we wonder whether she is simply putting on a happy mask, pretending everything is fine. (with more context even from the rest of this first episode we can tell Osha had been having a nightmare about the fire on Brendok, and probably has been regularly for the past 16 years.)
Tumblr media
the droid "Pip" becomes the second named character in the show. we get the sense that our main character is either very empathetic, taking care to notice the overlooked robots, or closed off from other people and connecting more easily with droids.
(Pip is also both adorable and cleverly designed from a prop-making perspective.)
our protagonist, "Osha", has to get to work right away, only snatching up a quick bite of something from a wall dispenser for breakfast. the ship is dim, drab, almost depressing, as is her work uniform in the same color scheme.
Tumblr media
she is friendly but distant with her coworker, "Fillik", and we learn that she did not go out with the crew the previous night. (this is her pointed lack of an alibi for Indara's murder, and her lack of interest in hanging out a contrast to her later story of getting tattooed with her buddies. we will wonder whether she became less outgoing over time, whether she perhaps felt inexplicably unwell around the time of Mae's revenge quest beginning, or her tattoo trip was an especially impulsive but perhaps characteristic thing for her to do.)
Osha and Fillik have to get out of the way of passing Trade Federation employees, and Osha shoots a look their way. she seems to have a low status in their eyes, and resent it. (we will also continue to see Osha wanting more for herself, like with her childhood on Brendok, and being stuck in a situation that she chose but which didn't end up being right for her, stalling to change it, like with her apprenticeship in the order.)
Tumblr media
(the Trade Federation making an appearance both visually and via spoken dialogue helps make a link to the chronologically closest piece of onscreen star wars in The Phantom Menace.)
"no rest for the wicked?" "the wicked rest, they just don't brag about it." is a fun little piece of banter but also makes us wonder at a deeper meaning, perhaps whether Osha is thinking about her secret murder of a jedi. (the bad guys surviving in secret is also how the season ends.)
Osha matter-of-factly takes the lead in walking out to her and Fillik's destination, exiting the ship, as well as talking back to their superiors. perhaps she wants to be in charge, or is a natural risk-taker. (confidently walking off is something we will see her do with the Stranger but less so with the Jedi, who she doesn't feel worthy next to at that point.)
(the hatch opening also reminds us of Luke's rescue near the end of The Empire Strikes Back.)
Tumblr media
(our characters doing outer ship repair while wearing space suits with magnetized shoes is also a very cool concept.)
Osha's form is tiny on the hull of the huge ship in the darkness of space, giving us the impression that she is lost.
Tumblr media
(the alien prosthetics look so good here, too. the fact that their voice acting isn't an offensive caricature helps as well.)
on a rewatch, Osha jokingly calling Fillik disposable unlike herself feels like foreshadowing of her (although hesitant) willingness to sacrifice others for herself.
despite being no-nonsense and competent right before, Osha freezes up completely when looking at a fire. why? (Pip helping ground Osha or snap her out of a flashback will also come back again and again, and her losing her most consistent support in him is a major point in her journey to the Stranger.)
Tumblr media
the arrival of jedi on the scene feels ominous, with Osha's unreadable reaction, the officers' clear annoyance, and Fillik's cryptic "friends of yours?". the audience is once more sharing the perspective of non-jedi characters, unlike most star wars media where the jedi appear. (with the context of Osha's departure from the order - and the remoteness of the Corporate Sector, brought up by Yord soon after - we can also assume she goes directly to her room in order to avoid them entirely, and perhaps get away from the ship.)
the jedi, "Yord" and "Tasi", stroll confidently onto the bridge. we get a first look at their pristine white-and-gold robes, making them stand out in the grey space. Yord seems completely self-assured, even amused, and casually makes to influence the captain with the Force.
Tumblr media
we also learn that Osha's occupation is illegal due to being too hazardous, and normally done by droids; this furthers her characterization as either seeking danger (for thrill or self-punishment) or desperate (for a living or to get as far from the jedi as possible). it also helps sell the idea that this is long before the movie events and connects to them thematically, with the future reliance on droids, dissatisfaction with the republic's regulations, and reckless pursuit of profit by the separatists' supporters.
the jedi are looking for Osha, and we learn her last name - Aniseya.
Osha seems worried but immediately lights up when she sees Yord, and we learn they know each other well - or used to, since they never expected to meet again after saying goodbye years ago. Osha realizes Yord is wary of her despite being glad to see her. she seems genuinely surprised and we wonder whether the character is that good an actor, or genuinely doesn't know why the jedi are looking for her.
Tumblr media
we learn more of Osha's backstory, this time having no reason to suspect unreliable narration - joined the jedi order at 8 years old after losing her entire family to a fire and being rescued by "Sol", left six years ago and became a meknek. she is awkward speaking to Tasi, presumably both due to being pretty much interrogated and having a stranger intrude on her reunion with Yord.
she has an interesting reaction to the news of Indara's death (she is, indeed, first learning of it, and we are soon after told she ended up having a complicated relationship with Indara, as the latter did not think she should remain in the order. we will also wonder whether Indara was trying to look out for the jedi or for Osha herself with her concerns.)
Tumblr media
we also learn concretely that the cold open happened the night prior relative to ship-time. since Osha just woke up in the previous scene, and the ship is clearly not over Ueda (seen better in a later shot), and Osha specifically moved far away to get away from them, the jedi seem quick and competent in their investigation. (them finding Osha's location quickly might also make us wonder whether they were checking up on her from afar, whether for her well-being or as a precaution.)
Osha is adamant that leaving the jedi was her own decision, and that it was difficult for her; she is indignant at the very idea that she would betray the jedi in such a way. (her line about "betraying the order, overpowering a jedi master, and murdering [them]" is also exactly what she does in the finale.)
Yord is obviously conflicted but resigned to do his duty, while Osha is disappointed in him but resigned as well.
Tumblr media
Tasi deactivates Osha's friend Pip, putting the audience at odds with her. (giving all the more antagonistic actions and lines to her makes it easier for us to like Yord later.)
the prisoner transport is guarded by an imposing red droid, its head looking like scary helmet with eyes that turn red as it looks at Osha. it towers over her and is filmed at an angle from below, putting us in her shoes.
Tumblr media
the scene ends with our first wipe transition, reminding us of the visual language of the film series, this time nicely matched to the transport's movement off-screen.
what a great scene! introduces both Osha (plus Pip) and Yord nicely, gives us the bare-bones facts of Osha's backstory to orient us but make us want to find out what exactly happened to her, and connects the setting to the prequels in a satisfying way. the worldbuilding here is nice, too.

Forest Temple and Darkstone Production:
How this elaborate door may tell us more about the process than we originally realized
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yesterday, I believe I had an epiphany. When I was watching this door activate, I realized that it quite literally might be giving us the recipe for darkstone production.
Let's outline what we're seeing.
First, the major structure on the door seems to represent the inside of the Temple and the machinery within. We see two people on boats above with jars full of golden-white light - the signature color for regular, non-colored light. We also see two cyan-colored lights below, not in jars, but seemingly in some mechanism in the machinery. This light must first be retrieved before it is taken by boat to the center of the machine.
Let's look at some concept art from Tom Zhao to compare.
Tumblr media
Here we can see a little bit of what they imagined the darkstone refinery process would look like. We see raw material goes in the center golden chamber, it gets stamped into a diamond shape, the refined "artificial star" gets imbued with energy while still in the chamber, and then it rolls out the troughs, presumably ready to use.
Something that stands out to me is that the cyan-colored light in this concept art matches the cyan-colored stones on the temple doors, making me wonder if those stones represent the energy that is used to fill the darkstones. That energy, as seen in this next concept and also in the Abyss murals, comes from trapped light creatures.
Tumblr media
It's important to note that these are concepts, not the final design, so things likely won't add up 1 to 1. However, we can at least try to glean some of the core ideas that were being captured.
These concepts appear to be:
Collect raw darkstone
Shape raw darkstone into diamond shape, creating refined darkstone
Imbue darkstone with light, creating charged darkstone
Whether or not all darkstones required the light of light creatures is up for interpretation, but we do know basically for certain that creatures have been used for that purpose at some point in Sky's history.
So let's look at the door again.
Tumblr media
Two cyan-colored lights from below
Tumblr media
And two golden-white lights from above
Tumblr media
To make one singular darkstone
So what are these ingredients?
I have two theories.
The first theory is that the golden-white light represents natural, regular light (like the light that the Prairie Elder hoarded in jars), and that the cyan color, in this instance, represents light drained from light creatures. Combining these ingredients creates a charged, refined darkstone, ready for use.
The second theory is that the golden-white light represents any light used to charge the stones (including light from light creatures), and that the cyan-colored stones represent uncharged darkstones. Combining them, you once again get a charged, refined darkstone.
What brought me to these conclusions? Why do I think the colors represent certain things over others?
Well, let's look at some more concept pictures.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The color scheme in Sky is very important - we can see how orange and white represent the closest things to pure Light and when we start getting into blues and greys, it represents a lack of connection to The Light.
So, I think the golden-white lights speak for themselves - they are natural light in some form or another.
The cyan ones are more ambiguous. I think it's relatively safe to rule out Cyan Light itself, the element associated with wind and Valley (although, I guess you could go that route and maybe assume the cyan light is meant for the stones to be able levitate or something, idk).
I'm more inclined to believe this represents something with distance from The Light, whether that be the refined stones themselves, which are often represented with a similar color in the concept art, or the light from drained light creatures, which may also be represented with a similar color scheme.
What this really pokes at is the fact that we genuinely have no idea what the extraction process of light creatures looks like - the only thing we can compare the process to is ourselves as skykids and the way we react to losing light (which is not foolproof because skykids and light creatures are pretty different in a lot of ways).
We could also maybe look at things like manta projections/spirit mantas, as well as the eel from Treasure Reef to take note of the other unusual ways light creatures can present so we can try to discern whether they are that way due to light extraction or other factors.
Ultimately, though, we know so much and still so painfully little about this process, so please enjoy these crumbs lol

there's lots of very non-subtle things lost records has been doing with color coding. the one thing that stuck out to me was this box of gems, color coded to match the characters.
what's interesting is that nora wants to make swann a bracelet with one of these gems that you can freely choose but the one she has in mind for her is lapis lazuli (blue). tiger's eye (yellow/orange/gold) would have been the obvious thing for nora to suggest right?
or why not suggest green/emerald for swann? i get this is just another thing that factors into the relationship building system so it might not be that deep but it is interesting.
Tumblr media
then there's the jewelry autumn is wearing. she's got two earrings, one is green and the other pink/purple, encased in gold. and she also has two necklaces, another one that's a green stone and a blue (slightly purple? but let's say it's blue) stone. the way they're arranged is also interesting. so we have three pairs: swann/nora, autumn/nora, swann/kat (or autumn ?? if it's purple - hard to tell with this one).
actually let's talk more about this. autumn's color seems to be pink, it's what's used in the subtitles throughout the game. the gem that's assigned to her is rose quartz also pink. BUT! her favorite color seems to be purple. it's what she suggests for the bloom and rage banner.
so which is her representative color - pink or purple? i think it's pink because the game has been pretty consistent about that with her. but then whose color is purple? why is it there? and why do we keep seeing purple with green?
Tumblr media
SIDE NOTE: so there's this theory i've read that there's another character that we haven't yet met, a missing fifth member of the group. i guess they could claim that purple belongs to that fifth character? personally i don't buy that theory for several reasons, biggest one being that half of the game is over and there is no scope to establish a completely new character.
instead, if these colors are significant at all, i think it's possible that the characters can change and so can the colors with them. the difference between blue and purple or pink and purple isn't that big. it could be indicative of a transformation of sorts. transformation to what? idk!
anyway. kat has a single blue stone in her necklace, simple, easy, makes sense. the shape is similar to the one autumn has in her necklace.
Tumblr media
swann isn't wearing a necklace in 1995 but she does seem to have one that's a bit similar to kat's just with a green stone (emerald i guess) that you can see in her room:
Tumblr media
maybe we'll see her wear that in tape 2. i don't have a good pic but adult swann is wearing a green ring on her right hand. makes sense.
one more thing regarding colors is this interesting mix of green/purple that they've been using.
Tumblr media
this is a very unnatural lighting situation but green and purple are opposites on the color wheel and they have a nice contrast. this color combination keeps reoccurring in the game. green is assigned to swann. pink is autumn's color. unless purple is too? unclear for now!
but wait i've got more!
Tumblr media
the abyss is purple/pink. note the pattern of lights.
Tumblr media
in the power outage scene we have these purple/blue lights streaking across the characters. this happens way before they find the abyss. also note the lighting of the scene just before it happens:
Tumblr media
it's blue and purple (iconic bi lighting). and then the POV switches and the colors change to green:
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
curiously, in the truth and dare scene kat has GREEN light streaks beamed on her. compare it to the pattern above.
if these light streaks are connected to the abyss then they've established the green/purple color scheme again (though we've seen the pink/purple version of the abyss - does it imply the existence of another abyss, a green version of it?). what is going on?? who knows!!! just two more weeks to go!!!!
i'm not sure what the meanings of these color combinations will end up being (if it's even that deep) but i'm sure these are very deliberate choices from the devs. though tbh i'll also accept "we thought it just looked cool" as an explanation because it sure does. the game is so colorful and i love that about it!!
