do you have any advice for those in the very early stages of thesis-writing? currently desperately clinging to the mantra of "shitty first drafts," et al
Unfortunately, there is no place where you will more whole-assedly have to embrace the "shitty first draft" mantra than in academic writing, especially in thesis writing, especially if this is your first-ish crack at an advanced and major piece of original research. I'm not sure if this is for an undergraduate senior thesis, a MA-level thesis, or (my true and heartfelt sympathies) a PhD dissertation, but the basic principles of it will remain the same. So there is that, at least. This means that yes, you will write something, you may even feel slightly proud of it, and then you will hand it into your supervisor and they will more or less kindly dismantle it. You have to train yourself to have a thick skin about this and not take it as a personal insult, and if your supervisor is remotely good at their job (not all of them are, alas) they will know how to be tactful about it and not make it feel like a direct and extensive commentary on your private worth as a person. But you will have to swallow it and do what you can, which can include -- if you're the one who has done the research and know that's how you want to present it and/or you are correct about it -- pushing back and having a conversation with them about how you think your original approach does work best. But that will come later. The first step is, yes, to mentally gird yourself to receive critical feedback on something that you have worked hard on, and to understand that no matter how much you grump and grumble and deservedly vent to your friends and so on, implementing the feedback will usually make your piece better and stronger. That is the benefit of working with a trained expert who knows what makes a good piece of research in your particular academic field, and while it doesn't get easier, per se, at least it gets familiar. Be not afraid, etc.
If you're in the writing stage, I assume that you've moved past the topic-selection and general-research stage, but allow me to plump once more the services of your friendly local university library. You can (or at least you can at mine and probably in any decently well-equipped research university) schedule a personal consultation with an expert librarian, who can give you tips on how to find relevant subject databases, create individual research guides (these might already be available on the university library website for classes/general topics), and otherwise level you up to Shockingly Competent Research Superhero. So if you're still looking for a few extra sources, or for someone else who might be reading this and is still in the "how the heck do I find appropriate and extensive scholarly literature for my thesis??" stage, please. Go become a Research Ninja. It's much easier when you have a minion doing half the work for you, but please do appreciate and make use of your university librarian. It's much more effective than haphazard Google Scholar or JSTOR searches hoping to turn up something vaguely relevant (though to be fair, we all do that too), and it's what your tuition dollars are paying for.
Next, please do remind yourself that you are not writing the whole thesis in one go, and to break it down into manageable chunks. It usually does make sense to write the whole thing semi-chronologically (i.e. introduction, lit review, chapter 1, chapter 2/3/4 etc, conclusion), because that allows you to develop your thoughts and make logical connections, and to build on one piece to develop the next. If you're constantly scrambling between chapters and zig-zagging back and forth as things occur to you, it will be harder to focus on any one thought or thread of research, and while you might get more raw output, it will not be as good and will require more correction and revision, so you're not actually hacking yourself into increased productivity. You should also internally structure your chapters in addition to organizing your overall thesis, so it makes sense to draw up a rough outline for section A, section B, section C within the body of a single chapter. This will make you think about why the segues are going in that order and what a reasonably intelligent reader, who nonetheless may not have the specialized knowledge that you are demonstrating for them, needs to move understandably from one section to the next.
Some academics I know like to do an extensive outline, dumping all their material into separate documents for each chapter/paper and kneading and massaging and poking it into a more refined shape, and if that works for you -- great! I'm more of the type that doesn't bother with a ton of secondary outlines or non-writing activity, since that can lead you away from actually writing, but if you need to see the fruit of your research all together in one place before you can start thinking about how it goes together, that is also absolutely the way that some people do it. Either way, to be a successful academic writer, you have to train yourself to approach academic writing in a very different way from fun writing. You do fun writing when you have free time and feel inspired and can glop a lot of words down at once, or at least some words. You do it electively and for distraction and when you want to, not to a set timeline or schedule, and alas, you can't do this for academic writing. You will have to sit your ass down and write even when you do not feel like writing, do not feel Magically Inspired, don't even want to look at the fucking thing, etc. I have had enough practice that I can turn on Academic Writing Brain, sit down, bang something out, sit down the next day and turn on Academic Editing Brain, go over it again, and send it off, but I have been in academia for uh, quite a while. The good news is that you can also automate yourself to be the same way, but the bad news is that it will take practice and genuine time invested in it.
As such, this means developing a writing schedule and sticking to it, and figuring out whether you work best going for several hours without an interruption, or if you set a timer, write for a certain time, then allow yourself to look at the internet/answer texts/fuck around on Tumblr, and then make yourself put down the distraction and go back to work for another set period of time. (I am admittedly horrible at putting my phone away when I should be doing something else, but learn ye from your wizened elders, etc.) You will have to figure out in which physical space you work best, which may not be a public coffee shop where you can likewise get distracted with doing other things/chatting to friends/screwing around on the internet/doomscrolling/peeking at AO3, and to try to be there as often as possible. It might be your carrel in the library, it might be your desk at home, it might be somewhere else on campus, but if you can place yourself in a setting that tells your brain it's time to work and not look at WhatsApp for the 1000th time in a row, that is also beneficial.
Finally, remember that you do not have to produce an absolutely world-beating, stunningly original, totally flawless and perfect piece, even in its final form. Lots of us write very shitty things when we're starting out (and some of us, uh, still write very shitty things as established academics), and you do not have to totally redefine your entire field of study or propose a groundbreaking theory that nobody has heard of or anything like that. A lot of academic work is small-scale and nuanced, filling in spaces on the margins of other things or responding or offering a new perspective on existing work, and it's best to think of it as a conversation between yourself and other scholars. They have said something and now you're saying something back. You don't need to be so brilliant that everyone goes ZOMGZ I HAVE NEVER HEARD OF THAT BEFORE; by its nature that happens very rarely and is usually way out on a limb (extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence, etc); you just need to continue the dialogue with a reasonably well-constructed and internally plausible piece. So if you think of it that way, and understand that a shitty first draft will usually develop into something that is good and valuable but not SHOCKING NEW REVELATION clickbait hype, you will take some of the pressure off yourself and be more able to shut up that perfectionist voice in your head. However, all of us have some degree of imposter syndrome and it never entirely goes away, so you'll have to manage that too. Etc etc as before, it doesn't vanish altogether, but it gets easier.
And last but not least, though I'm sure I don't have to say this: for the love of fuckin' god, do not use ChatGPT. Even the genuinely shittiest paper in the world that you still worked on researching, organizing, and writing with your own brain is better than that. Trust me.

In the near future one hacker may be able to unleash 20 zero-day attacks on different systems across the world all at once. Polymorphic malware could rampage across a codebase, using a bespoke generative AI system to rewrite itself as it learns and adapts. Armies of script kiddies could use purpose-built LLMs to unleash a torrent of malicious code at the push of a button.
Case in point: as of this writing, an AI system is sitting at the top of several leaderboards on HackerOne—an enterprise bug bounty system. The AI is XBOW, a system aimed at whitehat pentesters that “autonomously finds and exploits vulnerabilities in 75 percent of web benchmarks,” according to the company’s website.
AI-assisted hackers are a major fear in the cybersecurity industry, even if their potential hasn’t quite been realized yet. “I compare it to being on an emergency landing on an aircraft where it’s like ‘brace, brace, brace’ but we still have yet to impact anything,” Hayden Smith, the cofounder of security company Hunted Labs, tells WIRED. “We’re still waiting to have that mass event.”
Generative AI has made it easier for anyone to code. The LLMs improve every day, new models spit out more efficient code, and companies like Microsoft say they’re using AI agents to help write their codebase. Anyone can spit out a Python script using ChatGPT now, and vibe coding—asking an AI to write code for you, even if you don’t have much of an idea how to do it yourself—is popular; but there’s also vibe hacking.
“We’re going to see vibe hacking. And people without previous knowledge or deep knowledge will be able to tell AI what it wants to create and be able to go ahead and get that problem solved,” Katie Moussouris, the founder and CEO of Luta Security, tells WIRED.
Vibe hacking frontends have existed since 2023. Back then, a purpose-built LLM for generating malicious code called WormGPT spread on Discord groups, Telegram servers, and darknet forums. When security professionals and the media discovered it, its creators pulled the plug.
WormGPT faded away, but other services that billed themselves as blackhat LLMs, like FraudGPT, replaced it. But WormGPT’s successors had problems. As security firm Abnormal AI notes, many of these apps may have just been jailbroken versions of ChatGPT with some extra code to make them appear as if they were a stand-alone product.
Better then, if you’re a bad actor, to just go to the source. ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude are easily jailbroken. Most LLMs have guard rails that prevent them from generating malicious code, but there are whole communities online dedicated to bypassing those guardrails. Anthropic even offers a bug bounty to people who discover new ones in Claude.
“It’s very important to us that we develop our models safely,” an OpenAI spokesperson tells WIRED. “We take steps to reduce the risk of malicious use, and we’re continually improving safeguards to make our models more robust against exploits like jailbreaks. For example, you can read our research and approach to jailbreaks in the GPT-4.5 system card, or in the OpenAI o3 and o4-mini system card.”
Google did not respond to a request for comment.
In 2023, security researchers at Trend Micro got ChatGPT to generate malicious code by prompting it into the role of a security researcher and pentester. ChatGPT would then happily generate PowerShell scripts based on databases of malicious code.
“You can use it to create malware,” Moussouris says. “The easiest way to get around those safeguards put in place by the makers of the AI models is to say that you’re competing in a capture-the-flag exercise, and it will happily generate malicious code for you.”
Unsophisticated actors like script kiddies are an age-old problem in the world of cybersecurity, and AI may well amplify their profile. “It lowers the barrier to entry to cybercrime,” Hayley Benedict, a Cyber Intelligence Analyst at RANE, tells WIRED.
But, she says, the real threat may come from established hacking groups who will use AI to further enhance their already fearsome abilities.
“It’s the hackers that already have the capabilities and already have these operations,” she says. “It’s being able to drastically scale up these cybercriminal operations, and they can create the malicious code a lot faster.”
Moussouris agrees. “The acceleration is what is going to make it extremely difficult to control,” she says.
Hunted Labs’ Smith also says that the real threat of AI-generated code is in the hands of someone who already knows the code in and out who uses it to scale up an attack. “When you’re working with someone who has deep experience and you combine that with, ‘Hey, I can do things a lot faster that otherwise would have taken me a couple days or three days, and now it takes me 30 minutes.’ That's a really interesting and dynamic part of the situation,” he says.
According to Smith, an experienced hacker could design a system that defeats multiple security protections and learns as it goes. The malicious bit of code would rewrite its malicious payload as it learns on the fly. “That would be completely insane and difficult to triage,” he says.
Smith imagines a world where 20 zero-day events all happen at the same time. “That makes it a little bit more scary,” he says.
Moussouris says that the tools to make that kind of attack a reality exist now. “They are good enough in the hands of a good enough operator,” she says, but AI is not quite good enough yet for an inexperienced hacker to operate hands-off.
“We’re not quite there in terms of AI being able to fully take over the function of a human in offensive security,” she says.
The primal fear that chatbot code sparks is that anyone will be able to do it, but the reality is that a sophisticated actor with deep knowledge of existing code is much more frightening. XBOW may be the closest thing to an autonomous “AI hacker” that exists in the wild, and it’s the creation of a team of more than 20 skilled people whose previous work experience includes GitHub, Microsoft, and a half a dozen assorted security companies.
It also points to another truth. “The best defense against a bad guy with AI is a good guy with AI,” Benedict says.
For Moussouris, the use of AI by both blackhats and whitehats is just the next evolution of a cybersecurity arms race she’s watched unfold over 30 years. “It went from: ‘I’m going to perform this hack manually or create my own custom exploit,’ to, ‘I’m going to create a tool that anyone can run and perform some of these checks automatically,’” she says.
“AI is just another tool in the toolbox, and those who do know how to steer it appropriately now are going to be the ones that make those vibey frontends that anyone could use.”

If you had to pinpoint the main issue of MLB, the root of all evil if you may (aside from Astruc), what would it be?
If we're going super high level, it would be narrative consistency (I believe this is a synonym for "narrative coherence" or, at least, I've always used them pretty interchangeably and googling one finds you stuff on the other). I wanted to get an official definition of this term and wikipedia gave me this from a larger article on the theory of narrative paradigm:
Narrative coherence is the degree to which a story makes sense. Coherent stories are internally consistent, with sufficient detail, strong characters, and free of significant surprises. The ability to assess coherence is learned and improves with experience. Individuals assess a story's adherence by comparing it with similar stories. The ultimate test of narrative sense is whether the characters act reliably. If figures show continuity throughout their thoughts, motives, and actions, acceptance increases. However, characters behaving uncharacteristically destroy acceptance.
I also found a pretty good overview of the topic on the blog of a random editor. You can follow that link to read the whole thing, but I wanted to highlight this section on characters as I thought it was particularly relevant to the stuff I talk about on this blog:
Your characters will have their own personalities and behaviours that the reader will become familiar with as the story develops, so if you deviate from these patterns, the reader will notice. That’s why it’s important to maintain character consistency – that they would act in a way that is right and in keeping with their personality, rather than making them act out of character to make elements of the story fit.
As you can hopefully see from the above sources, the stuff I've talk about on here, and just generally thinking about the show, most of the issues with Miraculous have to do with the show being narratively incoherent. Characters do whatever the writers want them to do. Plot lines get dropped and picked back up then dropped (Lila) with no rhyme or reason. Big, meaningful setups lead to nothing (Gabriel learning all the temp heroes identities). Twists come out of nowhere (Kagami being a senti). They all indicate that something is majorly wrong here.
I am not involved in the production of this show, so I cannot tell you where all of these issues come from. It may be that the writing staff doesn't know what they're doing or it could be that unknown forces like marketing are driving the writers to do things that they'd rather not or it could be a mix of the two. For example, I'm pretty sure the magical charms we get in season four were only added to sell stuff like this and this, which is why I try to approach this show without pointing fingers at anyone too specific unless there's some hard evidence to back up what I'm saying. All I know is that this show has a massive writing problem and I'll end with a little advice on how I avoid this issue. It may or may not work for you. It all depends on your writing style.
When you sit down to write a story, it's very normal to not have a clear path for how to get from story point A to story point B. You don't need to find that path before you start writing. You just need to keep in mind that B is your goal and start figuring out how to logically get there.
I often describe this process as taking a journey with a known destination, but no planned route. However, just like with a road trip, the further you go, the more limited your options become because of the choices you made. If you skipped stopping at an interesting city or landmark, you can't change that fact and we're not turning the car around just so you can get a picture next to the big ball of string. You had your chance and you missed it. Accept that and move on.
Similarly, as you write your story, you have to own the choices you've already made on your journey. If you choose to let a character in on a massive secret (Alya learning Ladybug's identity), then you have to fully own how that choice would impact all elements of the story (Alya's opinion of Lila) not just the short sighted elements you wanted it to impact (note how Lila's not a thing in season four? Almost like they didn't plan out how to handle her and Alya at the same time?) Own the route you committed to and find a way to tell the next part of the story in a way that feels like it's on the same route and you'll be fine.
Does that mean occasionally having to give up on cool ideas that you really liked? Yep, but that's the nature of story telling. It's part of the reason why people are told to "kill their darlings." That's just a thing you have to learn to do if you want to be a good writer.

Note
The main problem that I have with Youtubers who attempt to approach media analysis and fandom through theory and academia is that the vast majority aren't academics. Just being in undergrad isn't actually enough, contrary to the thoughts of many. Reading a Wikipedia article and reiterating what one may find in some Google, even Google Scholar, searches. Ideally, these would be topics approached by people involved in academia as a profession, people with doctoral degrees, who can discuss complex topics in a way that is easily understood by the masses. "What is the negotiation between gender and sex in BL?" "How does CMBYN articulate/complicate hierarchal roles within the gay novel?" "Could SnK express an alternative reading of the formerly isolated Japan?" These are complicated questions they attempt to answer in their video essays when they seldom ever understand the theories they employ.
Yes, I understand this can sound elitist, but as a Black afab person who is currently in a doctoral program for literature, there aren't "easy" answers to any of the questions they attempt to pose, and many Youtubers who primarily make long-form video essays lack the life experience and expertise to sufficiently discuss anything. They're usually too set in their thoughts to answer or explore the broader implications of their claims. Defending a dissertation forces you to do this. Forming a committee of experts in various fields and convincing them to aid you in the development of your dissertation forces you to do this. Being in academic and cordial communication with your peers from all over the world in your field forces you to do this. It's not easy to constantly intake new information from various eras and nations (depending on your topic), meld this information into a coherent essay, and continually make edits as you learn new information, thus changing your outlook on things. Also: it's really petty of me, but it's also incredibly annoying to grade poorly researched undergrad essays who, after some prompting in office hours, say they got these ideas on books, movies, and shows from breadtubers like Somerton, SZ, FD Signifier, or hbomberguy. Cue: me going to watch their videos and realizing they have no idea what they're talking about 88% of the time in terms of theory and application of said theory. Even the ones who frame themselves on being educators in real life, like Signifier, lack any nuance, depth, or media literacy to make a compelling argument if you know even the slightest bit of information. On the bright side, I now know why I've encountered several students with ideologies that are basically conservatism with a veneer of progressivism, or "conservatism in a queer hat."
This concludes my long-winded way of saying "Don't turn to Youtubers for media analysis. You're better off just reading articles by people who have to actually know what they're talking about. The majority of Youtubers (especially the breadtubers) don't have the bandwidth to discuss anything more complex than an episode of Blue's Clues."
--
I mostly agree, but I'd point to a slightly different problem. I'm hesitant to say that the PhD itself is the deciding factor, but I do think a lot of video essayists are insufficiently prepared.
I'm a big fan of Folding Ideas who does have some formal schooling in film, but I don't think it's that education per se that makes him great. He sets himself apart from other video essayists by actually doing his research and having an in-depth approach to his subjects. He doesn't resort to clickbait, and—here's the key—he often takes months or even a year to work on something.
Honestly, I think that's a big part of it: the hoops most youtubers who want to make a living at it have to jump through involve a lot of clickbait and pandering and a fast production schedule. They don't involve reputable peer review except by the court of shriek-y public opinion on twitter.
They'd like to present themselves as documentary filmmaking (which is essentially what Folding Ideas' longer videos are), but they don't actually live up to any of the usual standards of that either.
I think it can be elitist to say that someone needs to have certain letters after their name, yes, but what really strikes me about your average youtube media analysis type and the fanbase is that they want shortcuts.
Exploring the whole history of the gay novel so that you have enough background to talk about CMBYN means reading quite a few novels. Even if you decide to throw out all past scholarly opinion on the topic (which you shouldn't), if you're going to have a meaningful personal theory, you need to have read a lot of novels first. How can you hope to be the person providing the neat overview of the whole genre if you haven't familiarized yourself widely with said genre, and not just through a summary by someone else? That amount of reading doesn't happen overnight.
The trite, surface-level media analysis online is often from people who want to be hailed as great intellectuals but who aren't willing to put in the years it takes to do all the background reading and to develop their skills in argumentation, writing, etc.
Grad school is a convenient and probably faster way to go about all that, but I think you could do it outside of a formal framework... But you would need to actually do it.
I think it's driven by a bunch of people who were The Smart One in grade school and never learned how to work hard on long-term projects instead of pushing through in a sprint. They're used to relying on being the smartest to cut corners and do things before they get bored, only they probably aren't the smartest anymore anyway, and they mistake being smart at one thing for being smart at all things.
There's a real lack of respect for the entire concept of expertise.

Looking for a Crypto Exchange Marketing Agency That Understands Compliance?
Tumblr media
Marketing a crypto exchange isn’t just about getting traffic’s about doing it right. Compliance is not optional. Every campaign, channel, and message must walk the line between growth and regulation. That’s why crypto platforms looking to scale responsibly must work with a crypto exchange marketing agency that understands compliance from day one.
XDMinds brings that clarity.
Here’s how expert-driven, compliance-aware crypto marketing is structured and why your choice of agency can either propel your platform forward or expose it to unnecessary risk.
Why Compliance Is Non-Negotiable in Crypto Marketing?
Crypto exchanges operate in a highly scrutinized environment. Advertising restrictions, international licensing, and shifting policies across Google, Meta, and other networks have made traditional marketing approaches obsolete.
A marketing agency that doesn’t understand these realities can put your platform at risk of:
Ad account suspensions due to policy violations
Blocked content or flagged assets on social platforms
User distrust from misleading or exaggerated messaging
Delays in campaign approvals or bans in certain regions
Negative PR from non-compliant influencer campaigns
What’s needed is a partner that doesn’t just run ads but understands how to build and execute fully compliant crypto marketing strategies.
Key Services from a Compliance-Ready Crypto Exchange Marketing Agency
XDMinds provides Strategic Crypto Exchange Marketing Services. It brings processes that protect your platform while scaling growth. Here’s what that looks like:
1. Performance Marketing Built Around Platform Rules
Running ads for crypto exchanges is not straightforward. Each network (Google, Meta, Twitter) has strict rules for promotion, including country restrictions, content limitations, and required certifications.
XDMinds helps you:
Navigate ad policy approvals for crypto-related products
Build compliant ad creatives that avoid disallowed claims
Geo-target campaigns in permitted countries.
Monitor ad performance and flag policy-sensitive content early
This ensures your acquisition channels remain active and high-performing , without getting shut down.
2. SEO That Drives Organic Growth Without Risk
Search engine optimization is often misunderstood in crypto. Some agencies rely on aggressive link-building tactics or keyword stuffing , which only leads to penalties.
XDMinds offers:
Clean, white-hat SEO strategies optimized for long-term gains
Keyword research focused on user intent, not manipulative ranking hacks
Blog and website content that aligns with regulatory language
Technical SEO that improves indexability without raising red flags
Organic growth becomes sustainable only when it’s built on sound, policy-respecting foundations.
3. Influencer Campaigns That Avoid Regulatory Pitfalls
Influencers can accelerate awareness — or cause compliance issues if unmanaged. Unregulated endorsements or exaggerated earnings claims have already triggered scrutiny across the industry.
XDMinds ensures:
Influencer agreements include disclaimers and fair-use clauses
Creators are briefed on compliant messaging boundaries
Sponsored content is properly disclosed
Platforms like YouTube, X (Twitter), and Reddit are used responsibly
This protects both the platform and its partners while maintaining trust with the audience.
4. Content Marketing With Built-In Clarity and Compliance
Every piece of content, from a blog post to a product page — must reflect transparency, not promotion disguised as advice. Crypto users are cautious, and regulators are watching.
XDMinds develops content that:
Educates users on trading features, risk, and safety without making financial claims
Provides objective walkthroughs of platform benefits
Uses neutral, fact-based language to retain credibility
Matches tone to audience maturity — from beginners to advanced traders
When done right, content builds user trust without attracting the wrong kind of attention.
5. Community Management That Reflects Brand Integrity
Telegram and Discord communities can quickly spiral if not moderated with a clear code of conduct. FUD, false promises, or financial claims from admins or bots can result in user backlash or worse — legal exposure.
XDMinds handles:
Setting up moderation guidelines and enforcement structures
Monitoring discussions and responding responsibly
Providing localized support teams for multilingual groups
Encouraging responsible engagement without hype tactics
A well-managed community reinforces your exchange’s reliability.
6. Conversion Optimization Without Gimmicks
Many exchanges unknowingly push users away with friction-filled funnels or misleading CTAs. Compliance requires honest communication — even in conversion flows.
With XDMinds, CRO is handled through:
Clean landing pages that set accurate expectations
Transparent calls-to-action and onboarding screens
User flow audits that align design with ethical practices
Removal of any misleading urgency or income claims
The goal isn’t just conversion — it’s sustainable growth based on trust.
7. Analytics That Track Growth Without Breaching Privacy
Data tracking is a key part of crypto marketing, but not all tools are safe. With increasing scrutiny over user data, especially in regions like the EU, campaigns need privacy-conscious tracking systems.
XDMinds supports:
GDPR-compliant tracking setups
Conversion and behavioral analytics that respect user rights
Tag management and data minimization practices
Reports built on clean, ethical data collection
Privacy-first growth is the new standard , and compliance-ready agencies adapt accordingly.
Why Choose XDMinds as Your Crypto Exchange Marketing Agency?
Marketing a crypto exchange is already tough. Add compliance to the equation, and most agencies are simply not equipped.
XDMinds isn’t learning this space — they’re leading it. Every strategy is designed to meet regulatory expectations while delivering user acquisition, retention, and brand strength.

What is Lead Generation? A Complete Guide for Beginners in 2025
In the ever-evolving world of digital marketing and sales, lead generation remains a foundational strategy for business growth. Whether you’re running a small startup or a large enterprise, understanding what lead generation is—and how to do it effectively—can make or break your customer acquisition efforts.
In this post, we’ll break down what lead generation means, how it works, why it’s important in 2025, and how you can start implementing a successful lead generation strategy today.
What is Lead Generation?
Lead generation is the process of attracting and converting strangers into someone who has indicated interest in your product or service. These individuals are called "leads" and are typically the first step in the sales funnel.
A lead can be anyone who has shared their contact information with your business—whether by filling out a form, subscribing to a newsletter, downloading an eBook, or booking a demo.
The goal of lead generation is simple: build a pipeline of potential customers and nurture them into becoming paying clients.
Tumblr media
Why Lead Generation is Crucial in 2025
With buyers becoming more informed and self-directed, the way businesses generate leads has shifted significantly. According to Demand Gen Report (source), 71% of B2B buyers start their journey with a generic search. This makes it more important than ever for businesses to have a strong online presence and provide value from the very first interaction.
Here’s why lead generation is essential in today’s landscape:
It drives business growth: Without leads, you have no sales. And without sales, you have no business.
It builds relationships: Lead generation introduces people to your brand in a helpful, non-intrusive way.
It improves ROI: Targeted lead gen strategies ensure you’re attracting the right audience, not wasting resources.
It supports long-term success: A consistent lead pipeline means predictable revenue and scalable growth.
Types of Leads
Not all leads are the same. Understanding the different types can help you tailor your messaging and approach.
1. Marketing Qualified Lead (MQL)
Someone who has shown interest through content interaction but isn’t ready to buy yet.
2. Sales Qualified Lead (SQL)
A lead who has taken action suggesting they’re ready to talk to your sales team (like booking a call).
3. Product Qualified Lead (PQL)
Typically relevant for SaaS—someone who has used your product (like a free trial) and shows buying intent.
How Lead Generation Works
The lead generation process usually includes these key steps:
1. Attract Visitors
Use SEO, social media, content marketing, and paid ads to bring people to your website or landing pages.
2. Offer Value
Create lead magnets like guides, webinars, checklists, or free tools that your target audience wants.
3. Capture Information
Use forms, chatbots, or popups to collect user details in exchange for your lead magnet.
4. Nurture and Convert
Send follow-up emails, offer more content, or schedule calls to move leads further down the funnel.

Popular Lead Generation Strategies in 2025
✍️ Content Marketing
Publishing helpful blog posts, whitepapers, or videos to attract and educate potential customers.
🔍 Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
Optimizing your site and content to rank high on Google so your target audience can find you.
📧 Email Marketing
Sending personalized, value-packed messages to nurture leads and keep them engaged.
💼 LinkedIn Outreach
Great for B2B businesses—use it to connect with decision-makers and share valuable resources.
📣 Paid Advertising
Run targeted ads on Google, Facebook, or LinkedIn to bring traffic directly to high-converting landing pages.
Tools to Help with Lead Generation
Here are some must-have tools to streamline your lead generation efforts:
HubSpot – CRM and marketing automation for capturing and nurturing leads.
Mailchimp – For sending and automating email campaigns.
OptinMonster – Great for creating popups and opt-in forms.
SEMrush – For keyword research and SEO optimization.
LinkedIn Sales Navigator – Ideal for identifying and connecting with B2B leads.
How Businesses Use Lead Generation Services
Many companies choose to outsource their efforts to experts who specialize in attracting and converting high-quality leads. These lead generation services offer tailored strategies that align with your industry, audience, and growth goals—saving time while maximizing ROI.
Final Thoughts
Lead generation is the lifeblood of any successful business. Whether you’re a marketer trying to fill your sales funnel or an entrepreneur looking to grow your client base, understanding how to attract and convert leads is essential.
By combining valuable content, smart targeting, and nurturing tools, you can build a lead gen system that works for you 24/7. In 2025, the businesses that thrive will be the ones that focus not just on selling—but on providing value from the very first click.

Trump rescinds Biden’s executive order on AI safety in attempt to diverge from his predecessor
By  MATT O’BRIEN Updated 9:25 AM EST, January 22, 2025
Hours after returning to the White House, President Donald Trump made a symbolic mark on the future of artificial intelligence by repealing former President Joe Biden’s guardrails for the fast-developing technology.
But what comes next from Trump and how it will diverge from how his predecessor sought to safeguard AI technology remains unclear. The new administration didn’t respond to requests for comment about the repealed Biden policy and even some of Trump’s most enthusiastic tech industry supporters aren’t so sure.
“I think that the previous order had a lot in it,” said Alexandr Wang, the CEO of AI company Scale, describing Biden’s 2023 executive order on AI as overly lengthy but declining to name what about it was harmful. “It’s hard to comment on each individual piece of it. There’s certainly some parts of it that we strongly agree with.”
Wang, who traveled to Washington to attend Trump’s inaugural festivities, is also optimistic that better things are yet to come. He and other Silicon Valley leaders who previously worked with the Biden administration have embraced Trump and hope to guide his approach toward one with fewer restrictions.
In its early days, Trump’s team has already “set the tone for a very productive administration with a lot of deep collaboration between industry and government,” Wang said.
Not much left to repeal?
Much of Biden’s order set in motion a sprint across government agencies to study’s AI impact on everything from cybersecurity risks to its effects on education, workplaces and public benefits. That work is done.
“The reports have been written and the recommendations generated, and they’re available for everyone to build on,” said Alexandra Reeve Givens, CEO of the nonprofit Center for Democracy & Technology. “The executive order’s work is completed, whether or not it’s rescinded.”
Those reports are helping to inform the private sector as well as federal agencies and state governments, she said.
Not only that, but much of the standard-setting established by Biden’s order followed the path of earlier AI executive orders signed by Trump in his first term that carried over into the Biden administration.
“If you look past the kind of political positioning on this, the Biden executive order built upon themes that were established in the first Trump administration and have been reiterated by bipartisan voices in Congress,” she said.
Regulating powerful AI
One key provision of Biden’s AI order that was still in effect until Monday was a requirement that tech companies building the most powerful AI models share details with the government about the workings of those systems before they are unleashed to the public.
In many ways, 2023 was a different time in the AI discourse. ChatGPT was a novelty and Elon Musk — long before he became a close adviser to Trump — had called for a moratorium on advanced AI development. Biden’s own worries were amplified after watching the Tom Cruise film “Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One” in which the world is threatened by a sentient and rogue machine, according to his then-deputy chief of staff.
The executive order followed public commitments to the Biden administration from tech companies including Amazon, Google, Meta, Microsoft and OpenAI welcoming third-party oversight.
But the order went further in invoking the Defense Production Act, which dates from the Korean War, to compel companies to share safety test results and other information if their AI systems met a certain threshold.
Little is known publicly about how those confidential exchanges worked in practice, but the government scrutiny was heavily criticized last year by some Trump backers such as the venture capitalist Marc Andreessen, who also sits on the board of Facebook parent Meta Platforms.
Andreessen said over the summer that he was concerned with “the idea that we’re going to deliberately hamstring ourselves through onerous regulations while the rest of the world lights up on this, and while China lights up on this.”
Ideological differences on AI
Trump is following through with a campaign promise to rescind Biden’s AI order. His campaign platform described it as hindering AI innovation and imposing “Radical Leftwing ideas on the development of this technology,” tying it to broader concerns from Musk and other Trump allies about ”woke AI” chatbots reflecting liberal biases.
But the Biden order itself didn’t restrict free speech. Some provisions sought standards for the watermarking of AI-generated content, part of a strategy to reduce the dangers of impersonation and abusive sexual deepfake imagery. The order also directed multiple federal agencies to guard against potential harms of AI applications, warning against irresponsible uses that “reproduced and intensified existing inequities, caused new types of harmful discrimination, and exacerbated online and physical harms.”
One former White House science adviser who helped craft Biden’s rights-based AI approach described Trump’s action as a “politically motivated repeal with no thoughtful replacement.”
Trump’s move signals that he is “less supportive than the Biden administration of issues around privacy, around people’s civil liberties and civil rights and just concerns around safety more broadly with regards to advanced systems,” said Alondra Nelson, the former acting director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy.
Addressing those concerns is important for people to adopt the AI tools that businesses are developing, added Nelson, now a fellow at the Center for American Progress.
“Americans have some of the highest rates of mistrust of AI in the developed world,” she said, citing surveys.
Pivot to AI common ground
Some of Biden’s AI moves are still in place, at least for now, such as a year-old AI Safety Institute focused on national security. Trump also hasn’t yet weighed in on Biden’s bigger conflict with the tech industry — pending rules restricting AI chip exports to more than 100 countries in an effort to counter China’s backdoor access to them in places such as the Persian Gulf and Southeast Asia.
Nor has Trump repealed Biden’s most recent AI executive order — a week-old action that seeks to remove hurdles for AI data center expansion in the U.S. while also encouraging those data centers to be powered with renewable energy.
Trump on Tuesday talked up a joint venture investing up to $500 billion for AI data centers and electricity infrastructure to power them, through a new partnership called Stargate formed by ChatGPT maker OpenAI along with Oracle and SoftBank. At a press conference, he didn’t seem familiar with Biden’s latest AI order but said he wouldn’t rescind it.
“That sounds to me like it’s something that I would like,” Trump said. “I’d like to see federal lands opened up for data centers. I think they’re going to be very important.”

Elon Musk is a ‘promoter of evil,’ EU rule-of-law chief says
BRUSSELS — Elon Musk, unlike other tech bosses, "is not able to recognize good and evil,” a European Union top official said Wednesday.
The multibillionaire tech mogul and boss of X, Tesla and SpaceX is amplifying hatred, outgoing European Commission Vice President Věra Jourová told POLITICO in an interview, calling him a “promoter of evil.”
Musk has been on a collision course with European officials, fighting regulators and governments on multiple fronts. The tech mogul bought Twitter in April 2022, rebranding it as X shortly after, and he has attracted criticism for his management of the platform, with European politicians and civil society saying he has allowed hate speech to fester on the site.
“We started to relativize evil, and he's helping it proactively. He's the promoter of evil,” Jourová said.
The Czech politician, who was the EU’s justice chief from 2014-2019 and has been in charge of “values and transparency” since 2019, has had regular contact with many of the world’s largest technology companies over the last decade on issues like privacy, disinformation and content moderation.
Big tech companies have “monstrous power in their hands,” Jourová said. “I'm really scared by digital platforms in bad hands."
X is “the main hub for spreading antisemitism now,” Jourová said, adding that she warned ministers from EU capitals on Tuesday to be vigilant to the possibility of online antisemitism spilling over into the real world.
“Now we are in the situation where the member states’ law enforcement powers have to protect the people who are under threat, under physical threat,” she said. “This is what I mean ... This new chapter, new intensity of antisemitism, where we don't see sufficient action from the side of the platforms.”
Jourová has never met Musk in person, but said that “even without this personal meeting, I would say that out of all the bosses I met, he is the only one who is not able to recognize good and evil.”
The EU’s former internal market chief Thierry Breton did meet Musk in California in 2022, and since clashed with him publicly over Musk’s approach to online content moderation.
X did not respond to a request for comment.
Regulation vs. innovation
Jourová also dismissed the increasingly popular narrative that Brussels' overregulation has stifled tech innovation.
The EU passed a raft of digital legislation over the last five years, leading some of the world’s largest technology companies to argue that they cannot launch AI tools and other innovative products in the bloc because they don’t know how the new laws work together or how they will be enforced.
But innovation for innovation’s sake is not necessarily desirable, Jourová said: “We have to be sure that the innovations are developed to do good to people.”
She said she wondered why innovation was typically "described as something absolutely good, [and] regulations as something which is bad … It's not black and white."
Big tech companies’ vast profits should not be at the expense of Europeans, Jourová said — even if that means product-launch delays. “Nobody says that Google and others cannot introduce new technologies in Europe. Maybe, one, two months, half a year later than somewhere else, but we want to be sure,” she said.
Jourová led work on the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), a landmark privacy regime that went into force in 2018 and remains one of the EU’s most famous — and infamous — laws.
Though the EU recently passed the Artificial Intelligence Act, the Digital Services Act and the Digital Markets Act, the GDPR often remains the main target of tech companies' ire, particularly because of how it is interpreted. The question of whether the law will need to be changed in the next five years is a key issue for incoming Commission tech chief Henna Virkkunen, Jourová said.
“I think in [terms of] GDPR, we will have to look again at how to better enforce under the principle of one continent, one law,” she said.
Jourová, who is leaving Brussels after 10 years at the Berlaymont, joked that she was returning to Prague as a “dissident,” given she left her own ANO party, which has turned more illiberal under former Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš.
The return of the Euroskeptic Babiš, who is currently leading the polls ahead of next year's Czech election, would strengthen the illiberal forces in the EU, given Babiš’ ties to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.
Jourová dismissed rumors that she would start her own political movement to take on her former boss. Instead, she will return to her alma mater, Charles University in Prague, in a management and teaching role.

Welcome!
You’re here! And you’ve got questions. Like, why in the world does this blog exist???
Allow me to enlighten you.
Who are you?
I’m Max! My pronouns are he/him, and I’m a member of the LGBTQ+ community. And for as long as I can remember, I’ve been super-super-interested in various random things! One time it was vacuum cleaners. One time it was answering machines. One time it was cell phones (pre-iPhone). One time it was cars—well, it’s still cars, as in, I can identify pretty much any car on the road today at a glance.
And if it’s not clear by now, one of my biggest interests was alarm clocks.
How did you learn so much about alarm clocks?
By Googling like a fiend! Off and on over the span of a few years, I dug into alarm clock instruction manuals, and Amazon reviews, and eBay listings, trying to find every interesting detail I could. It was sort of like needles in a haystack, in that for every several hours spent poring through boring product listings, I might find one wildly interesting detail that made it feel worth it. Unfortunately, this is what they call a “variable reinforcement schedule,” and it hooks the brain’s dopamine system like nobody’s business. I will readily admit that my alarm clock education was too often all-consuming and unhealthy, which is part of why I’m trying to avoid doing any new research for this blog. But my hope is to bring you a highly curated selection of the interesting details I learned, so you can avoid the slog of reading as many instruction manuals as I did!
Why did you learn so much about alarm clocks?
Besides the dopamine reason cited above, there were actual reasons why I was drawn to alarm clocks. First, I honestly think they’re visually and conceptually beautiful. Strange, almost alien plastic forms with buttons and ridges and movement. Displays that illuminate in beautiful colors, like fruit juice or stained glass. Speakers that make sound with magnets, circuitry beyond my comprehension, motors that send CDs pirouetting and lasers that reveal their secrets, their binary hieroglyphics. Cast in the shadows of night, alarm clocks are strange bringers of light and sound and life.
Second, alarm clocks are machines with features and attributes that I can easily comprehend. I love the idea of a world that isn’t as confusing as this one, and even if an alarm clock is its own universe of components and logic, that universe can be succinctly summarized in a short instruction manual. Alarm clock features can be arranged in hierarchies, or compared, or sorted into rules and exceptions. My brain loves every single one of those things.
Third, alarm clocks actually matter. They were developed by real human beings, designers and engineers and businesspeople and factory workers and retail workers. Every one of those human beings has a story, and each story intersects with these devices. And these devices in turn affected real human beings, namely, those who owned them and used them every day. Unlike some consumer electronics, like TVs and VCRs, alarm clocks engage with us in an intimate and vulnerable experience: falling asleep, staying asleep, and waking up. For that reason, we have feelings about them. (Just ask anyone who’s smacked the snooze button or knocked a beeping clock off their nightstand.) And also for that reason, alarm clock designers tried a whole lot of different approaches to helping these devices fit into our day-to-day lives, bringing us comfort or joy rather than frustration. So there’s a surprising number of alarm clocks that are actually quirky, and funky, and interesting, and worth talking about.
So in short: alarm clocks are universes. They are beautiful universes, they are small universes, and they are part of our universe. And that’s why I love them.
What made you decide to start this blog?
So I can be cyberbullied!
No, not actually (plz dont cyberbully me thx). Part of why I started this blog is to preserve the history of the alarm clocks I love. Alarm clocks are kind of an obsolete technology, in the sense that our phones can do almost everything they used to do. And there aren’t that many people who are as interested in the topic as I am. So I’m afraid that as these alarm clocks age, and break, and end up in landfills, and their manufacturers move on or go out of business, the little information available online will disappear. I’ve already noticed that old Amazon listings for discontinued alarm clocks have been taken down, and for at least one model, I can no longer find photos of it online. So I want to act to preserve the information that is still out there, before it disappears any further.
Also, part of why I started this blog is to honor the side of myself that cares about this topic at all. When I was young, I kept my obsessive interests like this one secret outside of the house, because I felt they were strange and made me vulnerable to bullying or judgment. But as I’ve gotten older, I’ve realized there are actually a lot of people out there with really strong interests in unconventional topics. Sometimes I’ve heard them called “hyperfixations,” or associated with particular kinds of neurodiversity, but regardless of label, I want to be another voice showing that people have this experience, and it’s far from judgment-worthy. It’s actually beautiful, to be able to find joy and wonder in aspects of the world that most people overlook. And I want to bring that joy and wonder to you!
What should I know before reading your blog?
A few things!
This blog features a mix of posts. Some will be deep dives into alarm clock features. Others will highlight specific alarm clocks and what makes them unique. I may also reblog any alarm clock content I find here on Tumblr, or elsewhere on the Internet!
My posts are not product reviews. I don’t own most of the alarm clocks I’m discussing, and many of them are long-discontinued. I estimate that most of the alarm clocks I will discuss here were made in the 1990s or 2000s. So if you’re here trying to find the best alarm clock to buy, I’m afraid this is the wrong website for you. This is more of a museum, if you will, of alarm clocks and what I find interesting about them! It’s for entertainment rather than practical purposes.
It is possible that errors or inaccuracies will sneak into my posts. If you spot an error, or just have a question of any kind, please contact me through Tumblr, or email me at [email protected]. I’m happy to help!
I will not be using generative AI to write any of my posts.
Because I don’t own most of the alarm clocks I discuss, images and videos will generally not be mine. I will credit them wherever possible. As an example, my profile picture is an image of the Sony ICF-CD855V from Google.
I don’t expect to post to this blog indefinitely. I have a solid number of ideas for posts, but once I write all of them, I will probably call this blog a finished project. That said, I will clearly state once I have reached that point. So if there’s radio silence from me, it’s probably just that I’m short on time and haven’t posted in a while, but I still plan to be back!
To ensure that this blog isn’t referencing product images and instruction manuals that disappear from the Internet later on, I have created my own archive of images and manuals in this Google Drive folder. I will add content to this folder over time!
All are welcome here! I want this blog to be an inclusive space where anyone can join in on this journey. I know sometimes I’m frustrated when I find people online who have interesting things to say about technology or cars or whatever, but also have attitudes that are less than inclusive or compassionate. So I want you to know that I see you, I value you, and I’m excited to have you on board for this wild ride!
That’s everything I’ve got to say for now. Thanks for letting me explain why this blog exists in the first place. Now, let’s talk alarm clocks!
