#Why to learn Foreign languages

I haven’t been really active lately but I came across something I wanted to share.
It’s a free language learning app called Lingo Legend, and I’m honestly a bit surprised by how much I’m enjoying it.
It’s basically just a vocab game where you’re a farmhand. The game is split between working on your farm and going on adventures.
You can choose what theme of vocab — though it doesn’t seem to be possible to put in your own — and set the pace you wish to play. There’s a daily energy limit, which you can refill by watching ads but there are no ad interruptions.
Supported languages are:
French, Spanish, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin Chinese, Russian, Dutch, German, Italian and Portuguese.
Maybe I’m just late to the party and everyone already knows about it but I rarely see it talked about.

this has been said numerous times, better, and by more qualified people than me before, but it truly is wonderful that spending enough time with trans people in any capacity ends up completely rerouting your inner gender recognition patterns. like, right wingers are obsessed with saying that we're trying to destroy gender, and it is true in a way, because i really can't see, say, a closeted/pretransition trans woman as anything else than a woman. like it just doesnt compute. it's not like, an effort i have to actively make, it's just as easy as with a cis woman. nowadays <- important addition because it does come from experience, but then once the new pattern starts to set, you can't go back, it's sort of like learning to read
like, brain plasticity is real (hurray for brain plasticity!) and there's no evidence more supportive of the fact that gender is a social game that is deciphered through a complex set of rules and symbols and patterns, regardless of the kind of physical attributes exhibited by individuals, than being genuinely unable to read a trans person as anything else than their actual gender no matter what their cispassing actually is like
#like it is very much like learning a new language or something. you can remember what it was like not to know#but you can't make yourself forget said language (and why would you.) and can't be monolingual anymore#i think it's normal if you're cis and confused and struggling with using pronouns etc for your trans friends#because it's like being dropped in a foreign language class and trying to keep up#but then it just gets easier and easier until you can't remember that one day you didnt even know what these words meant

For some reason whenever I try to use a foreign language in a dream (which happens on an oddly regular basis), I'm entirely lucid, no matter what the rest of the dream is like. Last night I was trying to translate part of a Shakespeare play into French (why? who knows!) and grumpily trying to remember if I was doing past tense right because I kept mixing it up with Spanish rules.
#my dream can be as weird or disjointed as it wants#as soon as a foreign language comes into play I'm locked in and mentally rifling through my class notes#i don't know why this happens#sometimes I even remember vocabulary waking me had forgotten so there's that#a few weeks ago in a dream a guy went oh you're learning Chinese? say something#and I was like noooooo I don't know how to do any of the tones :( I have hearing loss :( :(#for the record I prefer French past tense rules to Spanish past tense rules

I'm reading a self help book recommended on here, and so far it's really good, but the author has apparently not heard of the gender neutral pronoun "they" for singular persons. And is instead using "he" or "she" based on, what i can tell, vibes. Influenced by her own experiences, and gender essentialist stereotypes, it seems. Very odd and genuinely impeding my reading experience and comprehension.
#own post#i am wondering if tge author doesn't have an editor or sth which is possible it's not a big publication#but still doesn't resolve why the author herself doesn't know about this basic grammatical fact i learned in my first year of taking#english as a foreign language class in school

Someone needs to learn you a thing about learning things
Well- fuck you!
If you had any idea how diligent were ALL our teachers about making sure we get this right (There's basically the same word for "teach" and "learn" in Czech, just like "lend" and "borrow" and likely other examples.), you'd start crying tears of blood anytime you'd see it wrong too.
#reply#languages#English#Czech#No#I have zero traumas from learning foreign languages#why would you ask?!#It's like violent Pavlovian reflex.

being a polyglot or someone learning multiple languages at once is NOT going "hola! oh wait i mean hello!" it's going "isn't venti twenty in italian. why am i saying it in that accent. benti. what is that. which language pronounces v as b. it's not german, their v sounds like f. it's not french. is it spanish?? that can't be right. maybe korean. but im not saying the other letters in a korean accent?????? or maybe i am???? benti. 밴티 (baenti). yeah that's different. then what accent is this???? benti. benti. benti. im gonna lose it. benti. benti. UGH. benti benti benti. bro what the hell *looks up what language pronounces v as b*. oh it is spanish."
#also the time i spent several minutes staring at a russian keyboard wondering why the korean looked weird#and assumed it was just because the keyboard was in uppercase korean#.....#korean does not have an uppercase letter system#and that other time i spent half a school day with the word 'son' in a specific accent stuck in my head#but that pronunciation and similar ones are found in many languages#so i was like 'i mean in french it means 'his'? no it's not that'#'in korean it's 'hand'????? no not that son either'#it was the spanish 'son' for 'are'#and i'd just left my spanish class right before i started thinking about 'son' too#also the many times i try to think of a word in any language and i can only remember the ASL sign#i swear it happens every other day#like 'what was the word for cat in french again? its umm its uhhh *pulls at invisible whiskers*'#BRAIN#THATS NOT FRECNH#or the time i tried to remember the ASL sign for something and only remembered BSL#polyglot#foreign language#language learning#french language#german lang#korean language#spanish language#american sign language#british sign language#italian language

I barely understand what is going on. I only get the following:
The game story kinda follows the episodes (?). Don't see any extra stuff in the narrative yet.
The graphics and music are good. Tho I know, by experience, I will eventually start hating the bg music whenever I roll the gacha.
I think the dialogues are unique (?). If so, no wonder this took a while to be released. The transitions, loading screens, and idle/battle animations are amazing too!
The starter units are R versions of Ita-Kugi-Fushi.
The "Shopkeeper/Rewards (?)" is Gojo while the "Inventory Guy (?)" is Ijichi. I think...
The units I got so far:
Silver Borders = R Gold Borders = SR Rainbow Borders = SSR
There is a one (1) free guarantee SSR ticket that you can actually re-roll again and again as long as the red button isn't clicked. If the white button is used instead, it will roll the gacha again.
I just learned it by accident when the guarantee gave me SSR Panda and I accidentally clicked on the white button. It rolled again and gave me Nanami. That's when I realized it but... I had to say goodbye to Nanami. I have a different target unit.
So, I rolled again the gacha. It gave me a 3rd copy of Gojo. Rolled again and got Todo. Rolled again and finally... I GOT SSR NOBARA!!!
It was worth it... WORTH IT.... Holding back the urge to re-start the entire game just to get Nanami again.
#jjk phantom parade#why did it try to give me 3 gojos#nooo#i wanted both nanami and nobara#but i was forced to choose one#gotta grind this game currency now for the chance to roll again#i need nanami and shoko and yaga!!!#i hope this won't end up being another gacha hell for me#idk about anybody else...but being forced to play a game in a foreign language certainly incentivizes me to learn more about it#at least... to the extent that i understand wtf the buttons and the menu mean!! 😭#i recognize some of the terms tho because of fgo but no further#wtf am i gonna do the the duplicate units?!

Also "I know what this sentence means but I have no idea how to translate the words on their own"
ah yes, my favourite foreign language feel, “I know what all of those words mean individually but not together like that”
#i learned english by reading mostly#which is funny because while i did learn the grammar in school#most of my vocabulary i learned without direct translation#maybe thats the reason why it doesnt feel like a foreign language anymore#because i learned it like a child listening to their parents
