ALDER MANOR - WESTCHESTER, NY

Alder Manor is what one might call an “addendum” to a park… a sort of illegal one but there aren’t “No Trespassing” signs EVERYWHERE so I like to think it’s a vague policy no one told me about...

Alder Manor is what resides on the other side of the brick wall that denotes the property line ending for Lenoir Preserve, and unfortunately, for the Wightman Mansion on Lenoir Preserve property, Alder Manor is the mansion and estate that really catch your eye as you walk through Lenoir. The brick wall has been vandalized enough over the years that you can pretty easily find a way over, around or literally through it and onto the Alder Manor property…. which again, I plead the Fifth if anyone comes asking…

The piece of land that Alder Manor resides on was the same ancestral home to the Weckquaesgeek, who were a part of the larger Wappinger chieftancy who generally lived in the Yonkers area as was the case for Lenoir Preserve. The informational plaques at Lenoir Preserve indicate that the land was originally inhabited by the Lenni Lenape tribe (translates to “true people”) and they called the area “Keskeskick”, which isn’t necessarily wrong as the Lenni Lenape is a broad name for any native who lived between essentially the Hudson Valley down to the area around modern-day Philadelphia. I don’t know the exact details, I’m sure they involved trickery, violence or misunderstandings, so I’ll put it in the nice way of saying, the Lenni Lenape were “pushed” out of the area in the 1600s and eventually a man named Frederick Philipse III, whose family had acquired the land two generations prior, then owned the property of what is now known as Lenoir Preserve and Alder Manor.

Fast forward to the 20th Century and Alder Manor is a little bit of a New York history geek’s dream come true. AKA, my dream come true.
Alder Manor is also sometimes known as the W.B. Thompson Mansion, named after William Boyce Thompson, a mining tycoon and later Wall Street financier in regards to mining who had intended to use this palatial estate as his weekend home…
This part though is roughly where I suddenly became DEEPLY obsessed with the history of Alder Manor.

Mr. W.B. Thompson, in all of his apparently ridiculous riches, commissioned the architecture firm of Carrere and Hastings, who are better known for being the architects of the NEW YORK FREAKING PUBLIC LIBRARY! YOU KNOW, THE ONE WITH THE LIONS AND BRYANT PARK OUT BACK AND THE BREATHTAKING OLD NEW YORK ARCHITECTURE?!!?!? You know which one I’m yelling about?
..... I'm assuming you're as stunned and excited as me...

Anyway, Thompson lived in the house until his death in 1930, when it then passed on to his wife who lived there until her death in 1950. (If you’d like to see his absurdly nice mausoleum by the way, you can OF COURSE find it at Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, like everyone else famous from the area.) Upon her earthly demise, Mrs. Thompson legally willed the Manor and estate to the Archdiocese of New York and Alder Manor was converted into the first Catholic high school in Yonkers.
By 1989, the estate had switched hands again and was made a part of the Iona College campus due to space limitations in New Rochelle on the main campus. This was short lived, however, and the property began to be sold off to various developers.
The property has clearly been neglected and vandalized over the years, but since the late 1990s, the Irish Cultural Heritage Center, The Tara Circle, bought the manor and plan to revitalize it and turn it into their base of operations and an event venue.
Alder Manor has actually been used for scenes in movies such as A Beautiful Mind, The Royal Tenebaums and Mona Lisa Smile, which as a movie nerd, pleases me greatly.

BECAUSE OF COURSE, my favorite non-bird related part of Lenoir Preserve is NOT EVEN TECHNICALLY PART OF LENOIR PRESERVE. SOOOO, yes, I guess it is TECHNICALLY “trespa$$ing” but it’s owned by the Tara Circle, which is the Irish Cultural Heritage Center of Westchester and I’m Irish so I’m gonna say screw it. I get a free pass, and my free pass extends to my Italian boyfriend. LIVE LIFE ON THE EDGE (of a brick wall)! But also, don't vandalize things ever please.

Ruth Whitehead Whaley, First Black Woman to Practice Law in North Carolina

[Ruth Whitehead Whaley, circa 1950s, courtesy of The New York Public Library Digital Collections]
Long before the civil rights movement of the 1960s, Ruth Whitehead Whaley was blazing a trail for Black women in the legal profession and politics.
In 1925, the year that future civil rights leaders Robert F. Kennedy and Malcolm X were born, a year that saw 17 known lynchings of Black Americans, Ruth Whitehead Whaley became one of the first Black women admitted to practice law in New York. She was also the first Black woman to enroll at Fordham Law School, where she graduated in 1924 at the top of her class.
In 1933, Whitehead Whaley became the first Black woman to practice law in her home state of North Carolina. She also maintained a private practice in New York until 1944. She was later appointed secretary of the New York City Board of Estimate, which worked in tandem with the City Council. She served in that post from 1951 to 1973. Read more here.

Earlier this month she was honored with an historic marker located at the intersection of Ash Street at John Street, Goldsboro, North Carolina.

She died December 23, 1977 and was buried in Mount Hope Cemetery in Yonkers, New York.

The Old Croton Aqueduct Trail (My Adventure, part 1)
The Old Croton Aqueduct Trail (My Adventure, part 1)
Trail sign in Yonkers. According to the New York State website,. the Old Croton Aqueduct was “a 41-mile aqueduct and dam to be built in order to run water from the Croton River to New York City” built from 1837 to 1842, supplying water to 2 above-ground reservoirs, where the Great Lawn in Central Park and the main branch of the New York Public Library (42nd St and 5th Ave) are currently…

WIP Wednesday
A short preview from an upcoming chapter of Shotgun Wedding, in which Aziraphale & friends are high school faculty in the Boston area and Crowley is a single parent. "Fell! Yah scahf fell on the flooah an' it's gittin' soaked."
No one was sure where Shadwell was from exactly, but he always sounded like an angry double reed instrument and his accent was a nonsensical scavenger hunt of endangered Northeastern phonemes: Long Island, Pittsburgh, Vermont, Yonkers, the Shore, and Newfoundland all took turns with who knew what else. He was a phoneticist's dissertation in waiting. Students had lunchroom contests trying to imitate him. Nobody ever came close.
"Oh! Thank you, Robert," said Aziraphale. He fished for it under the table, and sure enough it was soaking up the muddy puddle their boots made under the booth. He sighed and Anathema shot him a teasing expression of pity. The travails of dry cleaning awaited.
"Why you walways weah white 'n public is beyon' me. Brave mayn, Fell. Brave or foolhahdy." Shadwell dug into his dinner. He was the kind of man to order an American cheeseburger "without any rabbit food on it" at a Mexican restaurant, which was exactly what he'd done tonight.
"He looks good in white, it's his color," insisted Tracy.
"It's ayskin' fah trouble. Like wearin' suede ta Seawoirld."
Tracy had proposed they all dine together before pub quiz this week. Aziraphale had a sinking feeling she'd reinforced the idea with everyone else behind his back, like they'd been summoned to rally around him or some such nonsense after the museum incident. It was downright patronizing. He felt intensely uncomfortable.
But that was no reason to make everyone else uncomfortable. So he tried to keep things light, even as he felt his friends side-eyeing him."Any plans for the long weekend?" he asked the table.
"Newt and I are heading south for a protest," Anathema reported.
"And we got a haunted B&B on the way back," Newt added from behind a staggering mound of nachos.
"Wheya hawunted?" asked Shadwell.
"It's in the woods in Connecticut."
"Nuttin's hawunted in Connittikit! You want hawunted, you go out Western Mass. Or Maine. I know some guys, they know all the witchy spots. Viry ghosty."
"And what does one do at a haunted bed and breakfast that one doesn't do at a mundane bed and breakfast?" asked Aziraphale.
Newt and Anathema shared a look. "Scry," said Anathema.
"Hunt for ghosts," said Newt.
They did not seem to think these answers unusual so Aziraphale swallowed any further questions.
"And whatta you doin' with your extra day off?" Tracy asked Shadwell.
"Reffin’ a college basketball tourney," said Shadwell, but he pronounced it kaarhlidge beyskitbowll towahnie, and all three of his Eastgate colleagues bowed heads in unison to stifle giggles.
"An' you Zira?" Tracy turned to him and tried her best to look innocent. But he knew this was a diagnostic.
"Well, I'll have a lie in -- take a long walk -- there's some essays to finish grading -- and I'm partway through a very good book. You'd enjoy it actually, Robert, Yukon gold rush history and true crime. It’s called The Floor of Heaven."
Shadwell was the senior history teacher at Eastgate. It had actually been called social studies for a long while, or American Studies or World Studies or Civic Systems. Nobody called it history anymore. Nobody but Shadwell.
He and Aziraphale were different as could be, and they argued often, but they tended to agree about pedagogy. They spent their first two years butting heads fiercely, but came to a cease fire when they realized they shared a powerful distaste for standardized testing and administrative meddling.
For over a decade now they'd designed their coursework to overlap whenever they shared students -- sometimes in open defiance of the district, but always with the approval of their academic boards. Aziraphale only had one class of seniors this year but their readings would interleave elegantly with Shadwell's gruff shouty lectures.
"Sounds like a peaceful weekend," Anathema said to Aziraphale, a little too gently. "You're not getting out at all?" A little too pointed.
"I might head over to Cambridge if the weather's decent," Aziraphale mused, although he didn't think he would. "Visit some libraries or the Fogg. But you know me, I'm happiest with a book and a chair. Always have been."
Always will be, he added resignedly. There was a ceiling on that happiness. It was lovely but it was tame. Never too bright or dangerous, never risky. It would never let him down. But it could only lift him so high.
"Waitch out for those Hahvad snaabs," Shadwell ribbed, knowing full well Aziraphale was a dropout. "Our own students crwoss a crick 'n staht thinkin' they poop rubies."
"You should pan the rivah. Maybe they do," said Tracy.
This is from chapter 10 which will post on Saturday, get caught up or subscribe here!

Beaux-Arts Classic Products in the HBO Gilded Age Series
January 13, 2022 by Melanie Kershner
The Gilded Age is an upcoming historical drama television series created by Julian Fellowes for HBO that is set in the United States during the Gilded Age, the boom years of 1880s New York City.
According to Fellowes: “To write The Gilded Age is the fulfillment of a personal dream, I have been fascinated by this period of American history for many years and now NBC has given me the chance to bring it to a modern audience. I could not be more excited and thrilled. The truth is, America is a wonderful country with a rich and varied history, and nothing could give me more pleasure than to be the person to bring that compelling history to the screen.”
In May 2019, the series moved from NBC to HBO, with a straight to series order The series is scheduled to premiere on January 24, 2022, and consist of nine episodes.
Following the move to HBO, the series was expected to begin filming in March 2020, before the COVID-19 pandemic delayed production. Filming of the series began in Newport, Rhode Island in February 2021, at the mansions Chateau-sur-Mer, The Elms, and The Breakers.
Chateau-sur-Mer – is one of the first grand mansions of the Gilded Age in Newport, Rhode Island. Located at 424 Bellevue Avenue, it is now owned by the Preservation Society of Newport County and is open to the public as a museum. It is currently closed to the public.
The Elms – a Gilded Age Mansion located at 367 Bellevue Avenue, Newport, Rhode Island, completed in 1901. Is owned by the Preservation Society of Newport County.
📷
The Breakers, Newport – is the grandest of Newport’s summer “cottages” and a symbol of the Vanderbilt family’s social and financial pre-eminence in turn-of-the-century America. Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt (1794-1877) established the family fortune in steamships and later in the New York Central Railroad, which was a pivotal development in the industrial growth of the nation during the late 19th century.
📷
In April 2021, filming continued at The Lyndhurst Estate in Tarrytown, NY.
Lyndhurst Estate – also known as the Jay Gould estate, is a Gothic Revival country house that sits in its own 67-acre park beside the Hudson River in . The house was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1966.

These grilles were originally made in Brooklyn, New York from 1865 to 1922 and then moved to Chicago and ceased production in 1938 after an incredible 73 year run. When you add Beaux-Arts Classic Products has been manufacturing these uniquely American grilles in the USA since 2010-2022 “85 years of production”. Arguably the finest grille ever made in the USA. Andrew Carnegie specified them in all of the 1,689 Carnegie Libraries he built in the USA from 1883 to 1929.

There are an assortment of elements interwoven throughout the design, such as the chevron pattern in the moulding, the interlocking diamonds, a rope, a ribbon as well as stylized acanthus leaves. They are the most popular style sold by Beaux-Arts Classic Products.
