If You Know You Know

I don’t know how many times I’ll have to say this, it must be tiring for some, but I need to reiterate this CLEARLY to be properly understood:

I WILL NEVER SHIP THEM WITH ANYONE ELSE.

This makes absolutely no sense to me. The only reason I’m here is to support Luke and Nicola as a couple. I’ve never done anything like this before, and I won’t do it again after them. Hopefully, if they become an official couple, I’ll step away because my purpose will be fulfilled.

I joined this fandom because I saw something extraordinary between them, something I’ve never witnessed in my entire life. Their connection felt so unique and undeniable. Other relationships, real or supposed, simply don’t matter to me in this context. I initially believed people supported them because they, too, recognized the magic between them. But clearly, that’s not the case for everyone, which is disappointing.

To me, there’s no point in being part of the Lukola fandom if you don’t genuinely support both of them together. To be clear, I deeply admire and respect both actors, and I support their careers wholeheartedly. But that’s not why I’m here. I’m not here to support two talented actors, I’m here for their LOVE, for that incredible bond they share.

I’ve seen many relationships in my life, but nothing like this. Their dynamic is something rare, something worth rooting for.

To be a true shipper is to stand firm in your belief, to celebrate the connection you see and cherish without hiding behind the guise of "realism" or "pragmatism" to spread negativity. If you don’t believe in the ship, that’s fine, but then, why stay? Why participate only to criticize those who do have faith?

Truly shipping them isn’t about constant doubt or spreading cynicism; it’s about what you see and feel between the two people you root for. For those of us who support Lukola, our belief stems from the extraordinary connection we’ve witnessed between Luke and Nicola. It’s something that doesn’t come along every day.

It’s not about shipping every supposed relationship they might have, that approach dilutes the magic of what we see in them. Even if they confirm that they are indeed in those relationships, will I support those ones? Not really because I’ve seen many of those; if they love it, I like it .Their lives, their choices. Not every relationship needs to be shipped, and that’s okay. If Lukola isn’t your ship, then jump ship. No one is asking you to believe, but also, don’t bring your doubt and negativity into a space meant for those who trust and support this connection.

This space is for believers, for those who see and celebrate something extraordinary. If you can’t see it or choose not to, that’s fine, but don’t pollute the energy of those who do. We’re here for Luke and Nicola together, and our faith in them doesn’t need validation from those who don’t share it. Let us enjoy this space as it’s meant to be a celebration of love, connection, and the beauty of their bond.

It’s not about being delusional or not accepting the facts as reality. It’s about recognizing something profound, something rare that transcends other real or supposed connections. We don’t believe their bond is just platonic, just PR, or just friendship. If you still think that you need actively LISTEN and pay a closer look and EAR at what is publicly available. “I’m not actually quite sure! I remember always thinking you were the prettiest girl in New Orleans when we were alive. You looked ethereal in my eyes. But I cannot pinpoint the moment I actually started loving you. I think one day it just… happened. I do remember a specific moment when I realized I had fallen hard for you. It was the day we went dancing to the bar near the radio station. It was pouring like crazy. I lent you my coat so that lovely dress of yours didn’t get wet. I was escorting you home when you fell into a mud puddle, you got soaked! Remember?” You nodded, fondly remembering that day. “I laughed at the fact you were soaked and then, you pushed me down and I got soaked as well. And even so, I have never felt as attached to you as I do now. If I could marry you all over again just to spend a whole day with you, I absolutely would” he finished. You were almost in tears.

“Really? If you had to do it all over again, would you have married me that day in New Orleans?” You asked so you could keep hearing his beautiful words.

“Yes, I would have… If I could turn back in time, I’d marry you all over again, no doubt about it…” with that, he kissed your hairline. You sniffed a little bit, having been moved by his words.

“I love you, sweetie…” you said, hugging him closer.

“And I you, dearest” he pecked your lips.

After that, you fell asleep in his arms. To the feeling of his hands on your hair, and the rhythmic up and down of his breath.

Please do not steal or claim this edit as your own! I've just completed another Noa x Mae edit that I’ve been working on for a few weeks. This might be my last Noa x Mae video for now since I’m out of ideas, haha XD.

Here’s the story behind the video: In this AU, Noa meets Mae by accident near his village. Intrigued by her, they quickly become friends. However, Noa’s father notices something strange, asking him why his blanket smells like an echo. Ignoring his father’s concerns, Noa seeks out Mae, and the two begin traveling together, growing closer as time goes on.

Meanwhile, Proximus and his apes are on the hunt for Mae. When they discover she’s traveling with an ape, both Mae and Noa are eventually captured. During their time in captivity, Mae confesses to Noa that she’s on a mission to save the humans. Noa feels betrayed and lashes out, but ultimately forgives her because of his love for her. In a confrontation with Proximus, Mae boldly declares she’ll kill him, though she’s unable to follow through. Amused by Mae’s determination and her relationship with Noa, Proximus underestimates them.

Mae and Noa manage to escape the prison. Mae finds the humans’ key in the vault and takes it to fulfill her mission, leaving Noa behind without explanation. Heartbroken and angry, Noa is left wondering why Mae didn’t trust him enough to share her plans. Months later, they reunite around a campfire. As they share stories of their time apart, Mae savors the moment, knowing they can’t stay together. The humans are preparing to attack the apes, and Mae’s frustration boils over as she shouts at Noa and runs off.

The day of the battle arrives. During the chaos, Noa is captured, but Mae rescues him. Despite saving him, Noa is deeply disappointed in her choices. As they flee together, Noa grapples with the loss of his entire clan, while Mae insists they are too different to be together. However, Noa, desperate to hold onto their connection, argues that the bond they’ve formed transcends those differences.

I'm not done with this mole hill yet actually. But genuinely as someone who is aspec/arospec and disabled I am deeply side-eyeing the Viktor is Ace discourse right now because I feel like context is being lost in the conversation.

Viktor ace and/or aro headcanons because you think it fits? Sweet. Queerplatonic interpretations of jayvik also perfectly valid. In fact, any interpretations of the two is completely valid because I'm not your mum. Go do whatever you want forever.

You prefer SkyVik? MelJay? MelJayVik? None? Cool. The point is it doesn't matter what other people think. Do what you want forever.

I also don't care if Linke is an aphobe, homophobe, whatever-phobe because I don't know the guy or his inner thoughts and world. I'm not gonna cast too much judgment over uhhh gay shipping.

HOWEVER...

There is an uncomfortable history of making disabled people and characters ace, essentially desexualising them, and treating them as if they aren't people with their own thoughts, their own needs, their own agency.

This is why I'm deeply suspicious of Linke's decision to state this in the context that it was. Was Viktor ace the intent the whole time? Perhaps. But it does feel a little bit like it was an attempt to dissuade jayvik as an interpretation of a text rife with topics and scenes and whatnot that can be heavily up for interpretation.

Long story short is that what we got is not difinitive proof either way that JayVik is canon. What we got is a deeply complicated story of love but whether that love is romantic, platonic, something that transcends either, is something that is fully up to the interpretation of the viewer. And I think there's something a little bit beautiful about that.

I know how I read it, but that's only my interpretation of the subtext. I'm not gonna begrudge you yours.

And that's what I'm saying on that.

The Ending of 'The Search for Spock' Hits Different

Kirk: "What I have done, I had to do."

Sarek: "At what cost? Your ship? You son?"

Kirk: "If I hadn't tried, the cost would have been my soul."

The ending of 'The Search for Spock' is so beautiful.

Kirk, having gone on this incredible journey of gathering his crew around him to steal the Enterprise - is so full of conviction at the end of it. That what he did was not only right but righteous, that it was worth the cost, that the price he had to pay paled in comparison to losing the other half of his soul - Spock.

He sacrifices his ship to give his crew a chance to survive. He is in mourning over the young son he never truly got to know. And at the end of it, the man who emerges is still one of principle, honor, and dedication to his crew, because that is who he is.

He doesn't believe in no-win scenarios. In 'The Wrath of Khan,' his faith is deeply shaken, but in 'The Search for Spock,' you can see that he regains something he'd lost - hope.

When Spock remembers his Captain, he doesn't address him by rank. He doesn't call him "James T. Kirk." He says, "Your name is Jim."

And that is such a soft moment between them, and that is the moment it all became worth it for Kirk, the moment his faith was rekindled.

He and Spock share a love that defies death, one which transcends all barriers of space or time. They are each other's perfect complements and it's beautiful to see.

“Do you even understand art?” Mr. Reca asked you, not looking up from his camera (or rather, his mechanical frog assistant), which was currently trying to catch a perfect shot of your contemplative expression.

You blinked. “Uh, I think so?”

Argenti’s sharp eyes glinted. “Beauty is not just a concept to be understood, it must be experienced.” He stepped closer, his armor gleaming in the starlight. “You must let it consume you. Let the world fall away, until nothing but the purity of your soul remains."

"Are you two seriously having a conversation about beauty right now?" Mr. Reca deadpanned. "I'm trying to film a scene, not host a metaphysical debate. What are you two even doing?"

Argenti raised an eyebrow. “I am instructing them in the sacred tenets of Beauty.”

“Just get out of the shot,” Mr. Reca snapped. “I’ve got a limited budget here, and I’m dealing with dream-warping nonsense, not this. Do you see what I’m working with here? These stars are too perfect to be real!"

You sighed and turned back to Mr. Reca, watching his mechanical frog try to climb up your leg. “You know, for someone who manipulates memories, you’d think you’d have a better grasp on reality.”

“Oh, please,” Mr. Reca sneered, “Reality’s a joke. A bad film script no one bothered to rewrite. I can do better by distorting it.”

Argenti suddenly straightened, as if struck by an epiphany. “Wait. Memories? You manipulate memories?”

“That’s what I said,” Mr. Reca growled, adjusting the frog to capture a different angle of the cliff. “I’m a Memokeeper. I preserve and alter memories. I make life more... interesting.”

Argenti blinked. “Then... why not preserve the purest memory? One that will never fade: the moment Beauty is realized in its highest form?”

You stared at Argenti, utterly confused. “You want me to remember beauty forever?”

“No,” Argenti replied, his voice unyielding. “I want you to experience it. Truly. Let Beauty transcend the memory. Let it be more than an imprint in time.”

Mr. Reca let out an exasperated groan, clearly annoyed at how his profound philosophical statement about memory had turned into a bizarre conversation about some ethereal "Beauty" nonsense. He motioned to you as if you were a prop. “Please, do not encourage him. He’s been on this Beauty trip for centuries.”

But you could already feel yourself drawn to Argenti’s words. There was something about them, some pure essence that seemed to be calling to you, pulling you deeper into this strange triangle of conflicting passions. You looked at both of them, one cynical and jaded, the other painfully idealistic. You were caught between Mr. Reca’s artistic drive and Argenti’s unwavering belief in perfection.

In a moment of sheer spontaneity, you found yourself stepping closer to both men, a smirk playing at the edge of your lips.

“Why don’t we make a film about this?” you said, eyes gleaming. “A film that blends beauty with the harshness of reality. One where the purity of art clashes with the grimness of memory.”

Mr. Reca shot you a skeptical look. “Now you’re talking my language... but the lighting’s still off, and we’ll need at least four more frogs.”

Argenti raised his sword dramatically, pointing it toward the heavens as his voice rang out. “Yes! Together, we shall create a masterpiece! One that will capture the very soul of Beauty in this universe!”

As the mechanical frogs scrambled to adjust the scene, you stood between the two men, caught in a collision of ideals and egos. The stars above shimmered with the potential of a film that could be equal parts magnificent and absurd.

And maybe—just maybe—you’d finally uncover what it meant to live through art… or perhaps to be art.

The next few hours passed in a haze of absurdity. Mr. Reca was constantly complaining about the budget, the lighting, and the mechanical frogs not capturing "the emotional depth" of the scene. Argenti, meanwhile, insisted that every shot had to reflect the ideal of Beauty, even if that meant holding your gaze for what felt like hours.

“Focus,” Argenti insisted, his armor gleaming under the starry sky. “This is the moment of transformation. This is when your inner Beauty will shine through.”

You exchanged a glance with Mr. Reca, who just sighed in resignation. “Yeah, sure. Let’s call it ‘transformation.’”

You stared at Argenti, his voice commanding and his body shimmering like a living statue. But as you looked back at Mr. Reca, the sharp cynicism in his eyes made your heart flutter in a different way.

It was a game of contrasts. Of passion versus apathy. Of beauty versus reality. And as absurd as the whole situation was, you found yourself enjoying the chaos... and maybe even a little curious about how it would all end.

I *think* I have understood what’s happening in this most beautiful piece of film:

As Kirk lay dying in Generations, Yor (reality hopping time traveler from Discovery) comes to him to take him across time, space and dimension to Prime Spock who is dying on New Vulcan. Gary Mitchell their mutual friend who ascended to godhood ( and whose death was not confirmed on screen) helps unite these two. When Spock died the first time, Jim was there. This time when Spock dies a final time, Jim could be with him without the glass wall.

Jim gets to walk through a field of flowers and touch his favorite flowers one last time. He got to meet old friends, who are also resurrected/alive in some way thanks to Genesis, and he got to meet his past selves and accept his death in a calm way.

And so they meet death together the same way they were in life. Together. Side by side. Without words but a thousand unsaid sentiments spoken through a raised eyebrow and a chuckle.

When Jim says, “Oh my!” in Generations, this is why! And when Spock raises an eyebrow a final time, it’s true to his character “fascinating” to see Jim come to him at his last hour.

Edited to add t’hy’la: I don’t want to call it a ship - friends or lovers or brothers- they transcend all that. But their bond shows that it is indeed important how we deal with death, at least important as how we deal with life.

I would like to think it is Prime Spock who requested these god-like powerful entities because at his resurrection he had told Jim: You came back for me. And Jim had replied: you would have done the same for me. So, he did. All of this takes place in a mind/katra non-corporeal realm as per my theory. Nothing is physically happening and to anyone in the physical realm, all this is lost.

P.s: Has anyone figured out what is the Yeoman/pilot from Cage doing in the video? edit2: Okay, apparently the answer to this is not in TOS. It’s about the plot that the archive is working on as part of their bigger initiative based off the Cage. She has an important role in it.

- Bi Han would never fail to gift you a bouquet of flowers- cheap or not. However, as Grandmaster, he has power over funds as well

- Bi Han once gifted you a bouquet of an assortment of spring flowers from a florist in Fengjian after another test

- Another time, he sent initiates out to the cave of an Arctikan dragon to pick the rare flowers that grew there

- the flowers were a beautiful blue hue, and the frost breath the dragon breathed gave it an semi-immortal frost. So, although it will die, it will not die easily

- When you asked Bi Han about the significance of the flowers, his words melted your heart more

hey! long time lover of your avatar works, and I have a question. I just finished watching arcane, and pls take this in good faith, but what is so compelling about Jayce? I definitely understand the hype/popularity around Viktor, but I find Jayce very boring in comparison to Vi's storyline, or Ekko and Jinx, or Mel and the black rose stuff - they're all very compelling to me, and as I watched I found that during Jayce's scenes I was kind of just waiting to get back to the other characters. I didn't really feel any tension between him and Viktor, which I know doesn't really matter in fandom, I'm just wondering what draws you to them instead of say, Vi and Cait. this could just be me wishing for more wlw ship popularity I acknowledge that. but I do want to understand what's so appealing about the ship :)

I was hesitant with Jayce in season 1—he had a kind of prettiness I don’t always trust, and his earnestness was so earnest I didn’t know if I could believe him. And then season 2 really changed him for me (and, by extension, made me look at season 1 in a different light).

Part of it is his brokenness in season 2, which really humanized him as a character for me. And then his devotion, his loyalty, the pain and yearning in his eyes. If season 1 is about Jayce’s naivety and the mistakes he makes—if even the first episode of season 2 is about this—the rest of the season is about the lengths he’ll go to atone for those mistakes.

And a large part of what changes him, what teaches him, is living through what Viktor lived through—living in the darkness of the fissures in pain, crawling out of it on a leg like Viktor’s now, understanding him for the first time in an awful and moving way. If Viktor comes back wrong in season 2 so does Jayce. In post-canon fics I think about the way the show depicts his PTSD, how the arcane damaged his mind.

There are parallels between Jayce, Silco, and Singed—people who love so deeply and blindly they will do anything to save the person they love, even if they come back so broken and wrong. Jayce is the only one out of that trio who regrets it and tries to make up for it, and somehow his choices are always underlined as much by his love for Viktor as his love for the world and determination to save it.

And Jayvik just really has my whole heart when we see how their love for each other transcends bodies and time. He loves Viktor and tries to save him even when he’s a towering eldritch-horror god; Viktor goes back in time to save him as a child over and over, even when he knows that giving Jayce the rune, that starting Hextech, will be the end of the world. They love each other too much to let go of each other. And that kind of unconditional devotion is so beautiful to me, staggering, magnificent.

And when you go back to season 1 and see everything between them in silent gestures and unspoken pain—the way Jayce is always gently touching and helping Viktor without condescending to him, the way Viktor keeps his suffering to himself—I just find that unbearable in the best way.

There’s a lot of Sokka in this boy when you look. His inventiveness, his determination, his loyalty. His willingness to have his mind changed.

It’s funny you ask this now because I’ve been writing a post-canon fic that kind of focuses on everything I love about Jayce. Which is… arguably kind of what all my post-canon fics are like lmao. But that pure blind love, when you just know how much Viktor will need it if they come out alive together… Ughhh my heart.

How all the Severance ships connect + how the Severance barrier effects them (nature vs. nurture):

The Severance barrier doesn’t affect innate traits, and innate traits are what contribute to the characters’ ability to transcend Severance.

Burt and Irving: Love of art that exists through the Severance barrier. Both innocent and pure on the inside, even though they’ve killed people on the outside. This purity endures even though they’re working on opposite sides of the story. (Anti-Lumon vs. Pro-Lumon.) But as their most innocent selves, they find a true connection.

Both have daddy issues. (Mark’s father making him drink whiskey since he was a kid, and Helena’s father stripping her of her autonomy and independence.) Both are rebellious.

Connection: Humour and rebellion.

Innate Traits: High intelligence, high autonomy, low agreeableness, openness to new experiences, high sensitivity to injustice.

Why I’ll Never Ship Them with Anyone Else

A Reflection on a Rare and Beautiful Connection

When I first started shipping Nicola and Luke, it wasn’t based on surface-level observations or mere on-screen chemistry. It wasn't just because they looked good together or had chemistry on screen. It was because of the way they interacted in real life how their friendship seemed deeper, more profound than the average co-star relationship. There was something about their energy, their mutual respect, and the shared experiences that made their connection stand out. They didn’t just complement each other professionally; they seemed to bring out the best in one another on a personal level too.

 It was about something deeper, something that felt real and rare. Over time, their bond became clear not just in their professional lives but in the way they spoke about each other, the ease of their interactions, and the undeniable connection they seemed to share both on and off the screen. It felt like one of those once-in-a-lifetime connections that we all hope for but rarely witness.

It all began as an unexpected interest, but quickly grew into something profound. I never intended to "ship" anyone, let alone two celebrities, but there was something undeniably special about Nicola and Luke that caught my attention and my heart. In a world where relationships often feel manufactured or fleeting, the bond between these two seems different. It feels rare, genuine, and out of the ordinary a connection that only comes once in a lifetime.

Now, I know many will point to potential other relationships they could have or may already be exploring. And while I respect their autonomy and happiness in their personal lives, any other connection no matter how nice it may seem will simply never hold the same significance for me. Why? Because statistically speaking, it's incredibly rare to find this kind of connection even once in a lifetime, let alone twice. The idea that either of them could stumble upon a relationship that offers the same depth, understanding, and chemistry feels unlikely at best.

In truth, I have no interest in their potential other connections, not out of dislike, but simply because they’ll never captivate me the way Nicola and Luke’s bond does. Their other relationships, while they may be fulfilling or loving, will by default seem more ordinary to me because what they share with each other is extraordinary. It’s not that I’m against them being with other people, it’s that those relationships will never solicit the same level of investment or intrigue. They’ll simply lack that spark, that ineffable quality that makes Nicola and Luke’s bond so captivating.

Even if they choose not to pursue this connection romantically, it will always feel like a missed opportunity for something truly beautiful. And though I will wish them both happiness in their careers and lives, I can't shake the sense that this connection deserves more. It deserves to be cherished, nurtured, and celebrated not just because it would be a beautiful love story, but because in a world that often feels devoid of real, meaningful connections, their bond stands out.

Their bond, in my eyes, is something rare and beautiful. It’s the kind of connection that transcends the typical, the kind that can evolve into a once-in-a-lifetime love story if pursued. And while I would always wish them happiness in their careers and personal lives, I can’t help but feel that their story deserves to be more than a "what if." I’ve never had much interest in celebrity relationships beyond a passing glance, but this, this is different. It’s not about star power or PR; it’s about two people with an extraordinary connection that feels like it could be something truly special.

For me, if their story doesn’t get the ending it deserves, it would be more than disappointing, it would be heartbreaking. It reminds us that there are still connections that are genuine and built on something real. If they don’t pursue it, that’s their choice, and I’ll respect that. But it won’t stop me from believing that what they share is something worth rooting for, something that deserves to flourish. It’s a love story in the making, one that gives people hope. We need stories like that to remind us that true love still exists, that in a world so often corrupted, real and genuine connections can still thrive.

This isn’t just my perception either. People around them, friends, co-stars, crew, collaborators, interviewers, and even fans can see the unique qualities of their bond. Even in the recent article in The Times, Nicola acknowledged people’s interest in her relationship and potential marriage with Luke, laughing it off while emphasizing the deep love and friendship they share. But there’s something in the way she spoke about it, the way she described their connection, that made it clear: what they have is special. And whether or not it ever becomes romantic, it’s a bond that few people are lucky enough to experience in their lives. If they don’t end up together, I won’t be angry or resentful, just a little sad, because the world needs more real love stories like theirs.

In the end, I’ll never ship either of them with anyone else because I’ve never seen a connection like this before. I simply don’t believe they’ll find this kind of connection again. And while others may dismiss it as friendship or PR, I see it for what it is: A remarkable love I’ll always believe that they have something truly special, a once-in-a-lifetime bond that, if nurtured, could become one of the greatest love stories we’ve ever seen. And that’s something worth investing in.

Sometimes getting a review code early is a blessing. Getting it a month before release, a miracle. Until you play the goddamn thing and realize it's something you've always wanted, and yet when the credits roll there's no one you can talk to about it because it'll be a week before anyone gets to know anything but leaks and speculation. You can't even yell "seriously don't worry" at people fretting about the quality of the ship. (and then when you write your piece, it has to be about all the other things you loved about it, and not the thing that spoke to you most of all)

I am an old. I was there when BioWare first started including queer relationship options, and it felt transcendant, a way to finally explore nuances of life and thought and emotion that often get swallowed up in mainstream story templates about romance. But that became commonplace, and it started to feel more like a template all itself - something to copy and repeat, instead of finding ways to make those romances work into the very fabric of the story told, to make them call and respond.

I feel this way about a lot of romantic media in my assigned domains (genre tv/film and games), mind you. Maybe it's my age. I find myself longing for stories about people who grow and face trials together, who weave into each other's lives, but that's rarely the focus. Romance is drama and big kisses.

I think in some ways the best BioWare romances have always been the ones interrupted: a Liara who goes to build her own life in between adventures, who can be an equal partner. A Kaidan who, because you played a man, didn't make awkward we-must-get-them-to-kiss advances on you in the first game and instead got to know you as a person. The timeskips and careful layering of Dragon Age 2. Building a relationship, not tacking it on. Hell, my favorite BioWare-adjacent ship will always be Atton and the Exile from KotOR 2: an unfinished game by a studio whose difficult questions never mixed well with BioWare romance structure, leaving us with two traumatized people who never got over their own limitations and pain enough to love each other openly.

So it's meaningful to me to trip over something that feels like it cares enough to really build and make the journey itself meaningful. (at least this relationship, as my poor Henry spent copious hours dodging people flinging him at Katherine) Though it means more waiting, since you're all still playing, and I'm serious when I say that the beauty of this particular romance sits in its context, the events and dialogues that have little to do with hearts, and the stuff the game forces you to think about as you play (do I want to take this risk? Hans begged me not to).

I am very glad it's out there, though. I crave meta and fic about all the gaps - what happens to Hans while he's angry at Henry, how Henry's feeling, the events at Von Berglow's stronghold after they get captured, Maleshov, Zizka-and-crew, adventures in Kuttenberg, but also all the stuff you guys probably haven't reached yet. Samuel. The siege. Boot soup. That quiet but important little conversation when both Henry and Hans get their first serious commands at the same time and struggle with the weight. And whatever the hell went through Hans's head in those thirty seconds before Henry reciprocated.

There is just so much here to talk about. I really hope we all will.

(though let's not talk about the solid five hours i thought i'd hallucinated the first romance dialogue check with Hans because i didn't know yet and I assumed they would never, ever actually do anything with the clear subtext)

I was talking with @marciabrady the other night about ships and the aesthetics of our favorite couples, and it made me really want to do a break down of one of my obscure crossover OTPs:

Grimhilde/Cruella, a.k.a. EvilPuppies!

Because I feel like Grimhilde/Cruella, out of all my ships, looks the most like crack at first glance, but there is so much more to it than just sticking two random Disney Villains together.

So, first and foremost, I started shipping them because of Kingdom Keepers Book IV, Power Play:

Despite the fact that Frollo is on the cover of the book and was the heavily promoted new Overtaker before the release of the novel, the main villains of the novel are actually Grimhilde and Cruella. The premise is that after Maleficent and Chernabog were captured at the end of the previous book, the Disney Villains who are trying to take over the parks have had to take on new leadership to get Maleficent and Chernabog out of Imagineer-prison. Grimhilde is the next in the chain of command, so she's in charge and has Cruella De Vil as her companion who follows her everywhere. They are ALWAYS together in the book, and Cruella, naturally, has a very flirty and complimentary demeanor towards Grimhilde that the Queen naturally just adores. Their chemistry is great, and there is even one part where the main hero finds the two of them asleep together on an air mattress and a bundle of furs (it makes sense in context) and, well... yeah XD The novel really glued the two of them together in my head.

And that togetherness, as you can see above, blends over into the parks. Grimhilde and Cruella are the only two main Disney Villainesses who are out with some regularity as face characters in Disneyland. All of the villains in the Disney Parks have a familiarity with each other, and you can get similar gal pal dynamics with them and Maleficent (and Lady Tremaine) around Halloween time. However, because Grimhilde and Cruella are out together for so much of the year, they tend to carry the brunt of that sort of "evil besties" friendship, leading to cute photo op moments like this...

So Disney is already doing a lot of the leg work to make them come across as girlfriends and to give them chemistry and a ship dynamic. However, if that was all there was to it, I probably wouldn't love this ship as much as I do. I need that interesting and thought through layer of shipping, and thankfully, these two have it in spades.

So, despite being from different time periods and wildly different worlds, Grimhilde and Cruella are aristocrats through and through. Grimhilde is literally royalty, and Cruella an over-financed heiress to the remnants of England's aristocracy (and she's the head of a corporate fashion empire in the Glenn Close movies). The House of De Vil dates back to medieval times, and evidence of that extensive and wealthy history is littered all around Cruella's mansion.

Cruella is in essence, the remnants of an old world that no longer exists, one of royalty and station that Grimhilde herself was a part of, and though the times have changed, Cruella keeps that class and regality alive. In that way, I think it blends perfectly with her taking on a lover who is quite literally OF that time period, and it also helps tie Grimhilde in with the modern world, giving Grimhilde a sort of immortality and transcendence that I think she'd very much value with her desire to be eternally young and beautiful. And, along those same lines, they are both very strong examples of matriarchal authority and power with Cruella bemoaning the uselessness of men and the pitfalls of women losing themselves to marriage, whilst Grimhilde murdered her own husband in order to reign alone without a man over her. They fundamentally get the sort of twisted villainous feminism that they are peddling.

Next is the themes of beauty and glamor. These are two women who are fundamentally motivated by vanity - Cruella wants to design her original Dalmatian puppy coat and stun the art world with her ruthless originality whilst Grimhilde wants to kill her stepdaughter so that she can reign as the Fairest One of All. For them, beauty and aesthetics are absolute, and they share a willingness to buy their glamorous ambitions with the blood of the innocent. They would fundamentally GET each other in that regard. However, and this is important, they GET that same motivation for vanity, but they don't COMPETE with each other. Cruella is a pretty woman, but she's older and she's a chain smoker whose habits have caused her to become a bit emaciated. She's beautiful in her own way, but she's never going to rival Grimhilde as the Fairest One of All. Likewise, though Grimhilde has extravagant fashions and jewelry, she's not setting out to be at the forefront of clothing design and art. She would certainly WEAR outfits Cruella designed for her, but she wouldn't want to supplant Cruella either. They're going to make the world kneel before their beauty, but they're going to compliment each other rather than rival each other or have to set aside their vanities for each other.

Then one of the big important elements that makes this ship appeal to me so much is the motif of DUALITY. Cruella is noteworthy for her hair that is half-black and half-white. It's her signature style, she's well known for it, it ties in with the black and white dogs, and it ties in with how she has her likable and admirable public face but also her sinister and dark side that the rest of the world doesn't see. Grimhilde also has the duality motif. Hell, she has BLACK HAIR as the Queen and WHITE hair as the hag, and the whole black and white motif shows up in her potions ("Black of Night" and "To��Whiten My Hair, a Scream of Fright"). Grimhilde literally has two faces and two forms. She is two villainesses in one, which is such a tasty match for the woman with infamously two-toned hair. And what I like about that too is that Cruella BLENDS with both the Queen and the Hag. With the queen, she has the aristocratic and blue blood regality and beauty that I mentioned before, but with the hag, she has the cackling maniacal bloodthirsty side that would have an absolute riot bringing death to innocents. It's so symbolic, and they're the only Disney villains who have that duality motif in that fashion.

And the fact that they have all of these interesting parallels and motifs while also being from two different worlds and two different time periods (medieval and modern) is a lot of fun purely from a crossover perspective but also as ANOTHER manifestation of their duality motif! And THAT is the type of tasty shipping fuel that I LIVE for!

So with Grimhilde and Cruella being of two different time periods, they also simultaneously coexist in one time period. Cruella in the original animated film may have been released in the 1960s, but her animator, Marc Davis, designed her to be a throwback to the old Hollywood glamor of the 1930s. Most specifically Tallulah Bankhead...

And Marlene Dietrich...

Cruella is pure Old Hollywood 1930s glamor trapped in a late 50s/early 60s modern domestic setting. And you know whose movie was made in the 1930s and has a very 1930s cultural aesthetic to it?

And Grimhilde herself is designed based on ANOTHER 1930s film villainess, She (Who Must Be Obeyed):

A movie that was famous for its Art Deco sets, and Art Deco is one of the main aesthetic motifs attributed to Cruella in the Glenn Close movies. So stylistically speaking, the two of them despite coming from different time periods and different worlds coexist in a way that is very old Hollywood. And with that combined link to the 30s, it helps the two of them to coexist peacefully and harmoniously in the same time period. They meet in this glamorous and mythologized liminal space. Heck, with Cruella's aesthetic links to the 1930s, I personally headcanon that she grew up absolutely obsessed with old Hollywood and making a concentrated effort to emulate that energy in her own style. Since Grimhilde is kind of an Old Hollywood character come to life, it's almost like Cruella can be a fangirl of something that she's admired for her whole life when she gets with Grimhilde, and you know Grimhilde is gonna LOVE that attention.

In addition, I personally like to be very cognizant about my ships with regards to what the individual character is going to look for in terms of a romantic partner and why the character that I've chosen for them suits that specific need. With Grimhilde, we know that she was married to Snow White's father and that she killed him, so we know that she didn't have any real love for that man, possibly any man. She rules over her kingdom alone and doesn't want anyone to rule beside her. In the Snow White comics and deleted scenes from the film, she showcases a sort of romantic rivalry for Prince Florian, but her affections for him are never about wanting an equal. She wants him because he is young and handsome and compliments her beauty and elevates her image in a way that helps give her more power through her beauty. So for Grimhilde, she needs a lover who can fill that niche - not someone to rival her or rule beside her, but someone who can be a perfect accessory to her beauty. Cruella being all about fashion and style is absolutely that person. She's very cognizant of appearances and what can accentuate or take away from beauty and aesthetics. That inherent utility to their relationship means that it would be something that Grimhilde would be open to indulging, and from there deeper feelings can develop under the right circumstances in a way that they wouldn't without having that utility first.

So that's Grimhilde's side of things. But what about Cruella? Well, we see Cruella's relation with love mostly revolving around this sort of one sided attraction that she has to Anita. And at first glance that seems contradictory to her getting with the queen, because Cruella is obviously going after a dainty and demure woman who she can kind of steamroll and collect as another fashion accessory. However, I think what makes this work so well is that it really showcases that Cruella has an attraction to traditional feminine beauty and women in general, and Grimhilde is of course is the fairest woman of all. The Glen Close movie adds an interesting dynamic to Cruella's attraction to Anita in that she enjoys the creative interaction that she has with Anita. Never really noticed Anita until the two of them started to collaborate creatively, and I feel like that's a big thing that Cruella needs and wants in a partner, someone who engages that creative side of her brain and understands her drive for aesthetics and beauty. And, as previously stated, who better to do that than the Queen of beauty herself? Grimhilde is a perfect model of unlimited dramatic creativity wrapped in a feminine and beautiful package that would set Cruella's heart ablaze.

Together the two of them fulfill that perfect niche for each other and foster a creative, beautiful, and bloodthirsty ruthless energy that would make them feel seen and supported. They effectively create their own little world of 1930s fantasy glamor when they come together, and that's just beautiful to me.

Those are the biggies, but some other really fun pieces of shipping fuel: *I love the aesthetic they have with them both being tall women with dramatic almost drag queen makeup and outfits that have tones of black, white, and red in their own signature styles. And Cruella has the flowing fur coat with the red liner and Grimhilde has the flowing cape with the red liner and so they can be very flouncy and twirly with their styles. *Grimhilde keeps a royal huntsman who can kill all of the animals for Cruella whenever she wants. *They both have similar structures to their stories - they start out on friendly or familial terms with the protagonists before they show their true colors, then they entrust men to kill the innocent creatures needed to enact their plan but those men fail them, forcing Grimhilde and Cruella to take matters into their own hands, and then the finales showcase them both transforming into frightening demented versions of themselves (old hag and crazy demon eyes Cruella during the car chase) madly pursuing their goals until they ultimate bring about their own defeats by the environment turning against them *Cruella has the green smoke of her cigarette which echoes the green and smoke of the Magic Mirror, and also Cruella's chain smoking being a sort of poison in and of itself links back nicely to Grimhilde's literal poisons. *OUAT gives Cruella magic powers and ties to the Author, and Grimhilde also has magic powers and is a literal storybook villain.

So, yes, at first glance, EvilPuppies may seem like just a crackship, but it's really not. There is SO much here in both their canon interactions and in their numerous parallels, and there are honestly probably even more that I'm forgetting. They are the crowning queens of femslash for me for good reason, and I adore them, darlings!

etho: etho is in a realm of his own where I simply can not ship him. he’s not doing the romance. he’s not doing the qpr. he’s not doing shit. And it’s not because he can’t pull bitches; he is swagless and a loser in a way that brings ALL the boys to the yard (as opposed to Grian who is similar except he can’t pull anyone), he’s simply getting weird with it. He walks right past any sort of relationship into something deeper; resident sopping wet animal. aro/ace also but this isn’t nearly as relevant as the autism

cubscar/convex: favorite hermitcraft ship and it is not even close. It is NOT EVEN CLOSE. in the way scarian are both covered in lighter fluid and holding matches, convex are also doing that except it’s become a game of who can set the other on fire without being lit up themselves, and they’re both having the times of their lives (ends with both of them on fire every time without fail and it’s usually scar’s fault). they’re insane about it. the vex shit???? insane. their minds are beautiful and deeply wrong. I think they should kill each other.

solidaritimes: I will never forgive Scott smajor for separating scar and Jimmy in secret life he has no idea what he took from me. In a world where Jimmy is often the butt of the joke (by his own volition, I understand) the sheriff deputy thing was fucking beautiful. Sunshine and rainbows, love and support and adoration and everything good and healthy. A massive breath of fresh air and easily my favorite part of the hermitpires crossover. They mean everything to me. I’ve never seen such losers be so in love. Failgirl power.

redscape: another banger. These guys are GOOFY and I think Scar hits a magical combination of being Completely Exasperating vs Setting Off Mumbo’s Bullshit Radar which makes them bounce off each other in a lot of fun ways. They are versatile as a couple between banter and shenanigans and dedication, it’s a pairing I generally think of as very healthy and fun and if you also like all of these things don’t read my Boatem Ghosts AU because I make redscape awful and Mumbo pays the full price! Whoops! I love to think about them falling fast if I am writing them as romantically/sexually inclined characters, where Scar is frustrating but at the same time charming and silly in a way that draws Mumbo in. ethubs: I think this is the only ship I can honestly say has ever been too weird for me. I think they’re deranged in a way that makes my skin crawl. I am deeply afraid of them.
