The Type 12 of the Belgian Railways (SNCB) was a fast streamlined steam locomotive of the Atlantic type put into service in 1939 and designed to pull short trains on the route between Brussels and Ostend at 120 km/h commercial speed. Designed by the engineer Raoul Notesse from a 222 of the Canadian Pacific Railways, it is one of the fastest locomotives of its time. It was built by the Belgian company Cockerill of Seraing. It was designed to pull short trains (only three cars) on the 124 kilometre route between Brussels and Ostend at 120 km/h commercial speed, with peak speeds of 140 km/h. This locomotive is almost completely enclosed, with an opening for access to the cylinders and the connecting rod. The cylinders were not on the outside, but instead were located between the frame rails. This eliminated unwanted movements at certain speeds at the cost of reduced accessibility. During tests, one of these locomotives reached 160 km/h.

On se sent tout petit et éphémère en comparaison, combien d’âmes humaines auront contemplées ce joyau de la nature depuis le commencement ???
