i've seen pics of your wobbuffet collection before but i always wanna know more details. which one was the first one you got and how did you get it? are there any besides the giant one and the homemade ones that have interesting stories?

first wobbuffet was a variant on the jakks pacific 2008 wobbuffet. the more common version of this wobb (which I now own) is made with a kind of thin, cheap-feeling felt? but this wobbuffet is much softer and the material is a lot more sturdy. i have no idea why two different versions of it exist, but i rarely see pictures of the specific one i have online.

this thing haunted my days.

i bitched about owning it for years but refused to get rid of it. eventually, my friends, eager to antagonize me, started buying me more wobbuffet.

i actually have TWO homemade ones now! red made me one out of a sock. and one of them has a voice box and talks, with kayzie rogers' dub voice which is pure serotonin.

i need you to know that there's this japanese language immersion summer camp i've both been to as a camper and worked at as a counselor and we just sort of inexplicably have mr brain both as a dvd and as a fansub that some counselor downloaded ages ago and when i was a camper we would watch it when we had to take a long bus ride and when i was a counselor last summer the fansub was one of the few things we could show the kids during media time because we did not have a dvd player and the kids went feral for it. to the point where when we did get a dvd player and could no longer show them mr brain because the dvds did not have subs, i heard the kids in my cabin making plans to make a discord server *specifically to watch the rest of mr brain* because one of them had gotten the fansub files from one of the leadership staff. its just part of this camp's culture somehow. and we were talking in the staffroom one time like 'no one in the world cares about this show as much as we care about this show' and someone was like 'well the lead actor was in smap so theres gotta be people in japan who care about it' and someone else was like 'OH THAT'S WHY GACKT WAS A CANNIBAL IN THAT ONE EPISODE' and i was sitting there like THAT WAS GACKT?? THE GUY WHO SINGS THE DECADE OP?? also oh huh i follow someone on tumblr who really likes smap. and now every time you reblog something about mr brain i'm like whoa. mr brain jumpscare. also weird little connection between this 7 episode long show i watched at camp when i was 15, and the kamen rider i'm the most insane about

You get a professional animator to do one (1) animatic for each of your OCs. What song are you chosing, and what vibes are you going for with each OC?

Ooooooh thank you!!! I've thought about hypothetical animatics for some of my OCs before, but... not ALL of them, so this will be interesting!

Rae: Free by Mother Mother. I'm imagining every "Love let my love inside go... free" being a bloom of her abilities, all this bright silver light as she puts shields around what she loves, and all the other parts of the song being some gentler moments from her life.

Robin: I think it would be fun to play into her musical theatre/opera side - Let's Hear It for the Boy by Deniece Williams (from Footloose). The animatic would jump between her onstage, playing out the song as an actor in the musical, and some little soft scenes of her and Peter being all cute together.

Madison: I know when you recommended it first I said that Belladonna by Ava Max was more of a Nikoletta song (and it is, but I have a different animatic idea for her here), but it could work for Madison too I think. It would focus on her mutation, maybe a few fight scenes with her blinking in and out of sight with her glass knives. Then we see her knives get shattered, and the fins and spines breaking through her skin (sort of a stylized version of what happens in her story), and then the final chorus is her with her enhanced mutation (really driving home the "poison/venom" themes there)

Ophelia: Heartbreaker by Pat Benatar. I'd definitely go with a stylized fight scene for her, probably the fight against Charybdis since that's her biggest fight scene. I'm sure there are other songs that would fit her, but... idk man, Heartbreaker is just permanently linked to Ophelia in my mind, I really need a fight scene set to that for her.

Gia: Absolute Lithops Effect by the Mountain Goats. I'm imagining it starting with Gia fresh out of HYDRA, limping on an old and unfitting prosthetic and opening up this rundown and boarded-up shop in Hell's Kitchen. Gradually we see the green come into her life again: she cleans up her shop and paints it in bright colors, flowers bloom, her clover thrives across the back wall of her shop, she gets a new prosthetic and bright tattoos slowly gather on her skin as she rebuilds her life.

Jasper: Falling Away With You by Muse. I already used it for a Heartstrings chapter, but it could also work as this quieter, emotional piece for an animatic. With the lyrics, and the way it switches between these softer verses and a more intense chorus, I could see a series of flashbacks between the soft, lighthearted start to their relationship with Kyle, and then the angsty journey to recovery and readjustment after he dies and is brought back.

Kestrel: This is another one you recommended, but Daffodil by Florence + The Machine. I could see a lot of nature imagery, and a lot of Kestrel's transformations into various different animals. I don't have a particular story in mind, just a cool showcase of Kestrel as a character.

Katherine: The Lion's Roar by First Aid Kit! I can see Katherine wandering through the desert, with golden magic twining around her hands like ribbons, until this mirage appears ahead of her: at first it wavers, then solidifies into a silhouette of a lion, then splits again into two figures walking towards her - Bastet and Sekhmet. They greet her like family members, maybe pull her into a hug or something, then disappear back into the desert.

Quinn: Breakdown by Icon for Hire. I could see this as a past/present thing, where the first half of the video is her before the accident, running and parkouring with her first crew - and then the music cuts off, utter silence, black and white as she falls and hits the ground. The silence lingers for a few long moments.... and then we're back to the song, full color and vibrancy again, with her post-accident still slipping through the crowds and picking pockets.

Eris: Guillotine Dreams by KiNG MALA for sure!! I want to see Eris fighting like an animal, covered in blood but laughing through the whole way, just causing absolute havoc. I just... I want to see them being an utter riot!!

Nikoletta: I still love Whispers by Halsey for her (thanks again for the rec!) and I think that the tone of it really suits her. I think it would be a very stark animatic, a lot of Nikoletta sitting alone in these dark rooms, a lot of black and white with very few details around her (as an echo of her feeling isolated both internally and externally). Either it could just stay there and be an angst piece, or there could be the gradual addition of colors as she bonds with the Squad - yellow for Rick, red for Harley, eventually a whole myriad of colors for Abner.

Jimmy: Hemorrhage (in my Hands) by Fuel. I'm imagining it starting out pretty angsty... Jimmy's lost kiss, him getting shot in the chest and watching the blood spray out into his hands, him waking up as a ghost and wandering Coney Island, and then... right at the end of the song, while he's on his knees and trying desperately to catch the blood spilling out... we see a figure step in and offer him a hand up, and the blood flow begins to slow.

Prometheus: I know I don't usually include them in the lineup, but... I wrote a whole fic about their transformation from a nightmare into a dream, and it's based on The Calling by the Amazing Devil. I would kill to see that whole transformation sequence set to the song.

Everything everywhere all at once — I saw this and was like wow that’s really cool and good. I like how it has such an emotional story that doesn’t get overshadowed by the action. I wrote about it for my college application so all my thoughts about it are now gone.

Catherine called birdie — I don’t know, I just liked it! It was sweet and cute and I liked it.

(I don’t remember the name of it hhh something wish I think) — it’s an emotional film about change and childhood and growing up and it freakin got me ok.

Just in the order I thought of them in. I haven’t watched a whole lot of movies new to me that I loved this year so I don’t know.

1. if someone wanted to really understand you, what would they read, watch, and listen to? 

Hmm, this is such a hard one and somehow I feel like I’m not the person most capable of answering this versus people who already know me? Like, what is the Most Me things? I have no idea.

Reading

And at risk of sounding entitled and weird, I have to say that I think the things to read to understand me are likely to be my own writing, to be honest. My little drabbles and emotional vents that are borderline prose something. Maybe my poetry. But that’s where I am, most directly.

On a wider view, there are few native writers that I feel like... If you read them, you could have a clear view into things that make me tick and be emotional, at the very least. Unfortunately, they’re not translated so you can’t read them. Also The Last Elf & Dragon & Ork by Silvana de Mari. (Same case with English readers, as far as I know.) And finally, Martian Chronicles by Ray Bradbury. I feel like... These are books that echo/reflect some pieces of me well.

Watching

As for what to watch, I’d say Fly Away Home and Never Cry Wolf, two slightly odd but greatly touching movies from same director that mean the world to me. In some ways, I would say Just Between Lovers. And recently, I think Mushishi would make an addition to the list. Again, none are exact me-to-screen things but I think that if you watch them and think about why I picked them, you will find the answer you seek on some level?

This has potential to get very long.

I will try to be concise and highlighting some songs that have meant a world to me and I come back to them as a sort of emotional staple or some that sum up a time of my life/part of me well, at least to me. There are many of those, too, but I’ll try to narrow it down. Vaguely listed in order I met them. Warning for some darker themes.

If I’d be just human thrown into any of these worlds, I’d be squished and gone in ten minutes flat or I’d, like, be muggle. So, I don’t have exact destination/want for any of these. Can I just tour like an Observing all seeing eye through all of them?

The M9 as TMG

Seeing as The Mountain Goats have four billion songs and John Darnielle loves D&D, I really needed to assign Critical Role characters their own songs. 

Caleb: Autoclave. “And there's no light anywhere, and nothing left to burn/ And I am this great, unstable mass of blood and foam/ And no emotion that's worth having could call my heart its home/ My heart's an autoclave” Like come on that is so painfully Caleb it is killing me. The self-loathing, the fire metaphor, sheesh. 

Caduceus: Absolute Lithops Effect “And I will bloom here in my room/ With a little water and a little bit of sunlight/ And a little bit of tender mercy, tender mercy” this song is all about a really gentle kind of awakening that happens all alone and also plant metaphor so perfect Clay material.

Fjord: Choked Out “Most of the boys/ Won't ever cross this line/ If they all want to die dead broke that's fine, that's fine/ Everybody's got their limits/ Nobody's found mine” I really debated this one, but I feel like it encapsulates Fjord’s flirtation with the danger of either releasing Uk’otoa or getting strangled to death by a huge tentacle.  

Nott: Hebrews 11:40 “Take to the hills, run away/ I'm going to get my perfect body back someday/ If not by faith, then by the sword/ I'm going to be restored” I mean, come on, the song is about dark magic rituals and a person trying to get their original body back. 

Jester: Get Lonely “And I will come back home/ Maybe call some friends/ Maybe paint some pictures/ It all depends/ And I will get lonely/ And gasp for air/ And look up at the high windows/ And see your face up there” This is also kind of a weird choice since Jester is usually such a happy character, but I think this song reflects her loneliness and the Traveller reaching out in those moments

Beau: This Year “I played video games in a drunken haze/ I was seventeen years young/ Hurt my knuckles punching the machines/ The taste of Scotch rich on my tongue” Basically Sunset Tree is an extremely Beau album. There are so many great defiant fuck you songs but this one captures both her rebellion and her grit. 

Yasha: Psalms 40:20 “In the burning fuselage of my days/ Let my mouth be ever fresh with praise/ He has fixed his sign in the sky/ He has raised me from the pit and set me high” Yasha was really hard to find a good song for since there are so many TMG songs about grief and healing, but in the end I settled on this one as the more rage-y storm lord version of healing. 

Molly: Heretic Pride “I want to cry out/ But I don't scream and I don't shout/ And I feel so proud to be alive/ And I feel so proud when the reckoning arrives” Absolutely the anthem of Molly. No question. No more perfect choice. Shine bright.

As I suspected, a lot of these come from Heretic Pride (the monster themed album) and none of them come from Tallahassee (an album I deeply love, but also none of the M9 are trapped in a toxic marriage haha).

okay, you get two: Absolute Lithops Effect by the Mountain Goats, which is probably the more apt of the two (”I will bloom here in my room with a little water and a little bit of sunlight, and a little bit of tender mercy”), but also Get Lonely (”I will get lonely and gasp for air / send your name off from my lips like a signal flare”) because I think the feeling you’re describing is the one this always brings up for me - it hits me in the chest somewhere, always really suddenly even though I know it’s coming. somewhere in the middle of the song, usually. and it’s More than one four-minute song should be capable of, it’s a bigger feeling than makes sense, this tenderness that I always think is more than I can stand and is going to make me cry and it never quite does. and I just hover there for a minute or two, and then it passes.
