🎸Meet Maya Neelakantan, who floored audiences with her rendition of Papa Roach’s “Last Resort.”Hailing from Chennai, #India, @mayaneelakantan started playing guitar at age 5. She started a YouTube channel a couple years later, showcasing her guitar skills when it comes to heavy metal tunes. Only a year earlier, she went viral for covering Tool’s 16-minute song, “7empest.” The band members touted the song as one of the hardest to play. Neelakantan, however, performed with such ease that the band’s lead guitarist, Adam Thomas Jones (@adamjones_tv), sent her a guitar.

On #AmericasGotTalent, a U.S.-based talent competition, Neelakantan opened with notes of the Carnatic rāga “Natabhairavi.” The judges looked bemused, before the beat dropped, and she started headbanging while belting out “Last Resort.”

All four judges gave her a standing ovation.“You know what I love about this audition? We just weren’t expecting this,” said judge @simoncowell, “You were so shy, and…then you turned into this rock goddess.”

To advance to the next round, a contestant needs three of the four judges to vote yes. @sofiavergara gave the first yes, commenting: “Are you sure you are 10 years old? I mean your energy and confidence, amazing!” The rest of the judges followed suit, sending the ingénue to the next round.

“My journey has just begun,” wrote Neelankantan, who is now 11, in an Instagram post in February. “My dream is to one day combine all of my interests and create something that is totally unheard of!...I want to create a genre of my own.”

Did you know? Before @toolmusic, @adamjones_tv was a sculptor and special effects designer. He learned the stop motion camera techniques he would later apply in Tool's music videos, such as "Sober", "Prison Sex", "Stinkfist", "Ænema", "Schism", "Parabola", and "Vicarious". He started to work at @ricklazzarini's @thecharactershop. During the next couple of years, he worked on the Monsters TV show. He designed and fabricated a Grim Reaper makeup and a zombie head on a spike (later used in Ghostbusters II) among others. Went to see @tooltheband tonight in Berlin. For those who don’t know they have a very strict “no pic or video/phone” rule. It was nice to see people respect that, and to actually be present and watch a concert with their own eyes rather than through a tiny screen. I haven’t seen a crowd act like this since i was a teenager. Kudos to TOOL for Being probably the only band out there that gets to have people’s actual attention directed at them while they pour their guts out on stage for everyone each night. The collective energy in this room tonight was intoxicating. What a great show. Thanks for having us @adamjones_tv & co. PS yes I know I broke the rule to take this photo but it’s a conversation worth having and a message worth spreading. To be fair I was tackled by 6 security guards just after I snapped it and then hauled off to a local jail. I am actually making this post from my jail cell.
