girls who cry when they're angry are angels.
Tumblr media
❝If you’re going to complain the whole time, I’d rather you excuse yourself.” Henry says, flipping a page. He doesn’t bother to spare you a glance.
“I didn’t say anything.” You lift your head, lean back into your seat and cross your arms.
“Not with your mouth,” His pen floats across the page as though he’s channeling rather than translating, “Satis queritur corpus tuum.”
   Your body complains enough. ❞
The precursor to the second time you almost kiss Henry Winter.
Heads up, this is once again a first draft, and though I worked over each Latin passage as much as I possibly could (using translating software as sparingly as possible,) the Latin seen is bound to be awful. I've only been studying Latin consistently for like three weeks, so I apologize. There's a lot of it. Otherwise, have fun!
read on ao3 + guardian angel masterlist
It doesn’t matter who came up with the idea of sticking you in this sweltering cottage sunroom with Henry for 3 hours every afternoon, you’re going to murder them as slowly and painfully as you possibly can. You rest a cheek on your palm, elbow pressed so hard into the wide oak tabletop that you can already feel the dull thud of a pressure wound beginning to form, and resist the urge to slam your textbook shut. Your thighs stick to the chair- hard backed, hand carved, seat worn smooth after decades of use- but you don’t bother changing positions; your thighs will only stick again, in a possibly even more uncomfortable position, and you’d really rather not address the sweat pooling in the curve behind your bent knee.
Your hair is swept back into a high angled ponytail reminiscent of the sort you might have seen on Leave It To Beaver as a little girl. You worry the inside of your top lip until it’s too sore to go on, the slightest whisper of iron trickling over your teeth. It’s disastrously warm and humid to boot, being that it’s August in Maine, and despite that fact Henry refuses to open a window or run a fan within the walls- almost entirely glass, the windows are so expansive,- of this octagonal space.
Henry appears tranquil, a stiff set to his body while he works over a translation as easily as though he is doing nothing more than copying it down. He never seems to struggle with anything, especially not as far as linguistics are concerned, and is entirely unperturbed by the heat. You stare back down at your paper which blinks up at you, unchanged, waiting for you to fill in your answers. The words taunt you in the way they curve, a mimicry of a language you understand without trying, letters placed in an order you don’t recognize. Perhaps you would recognize them, if not for the way your baby hairs have worked their way out of your ponytail and now stick uncomfortably to your neck, or the way your shirt holds fast to your back.
You’re meant to be reviewing all you’ve supposedly learned over the summer. Your fingers ache deep within, each joint feeling like it’s one last press away from rolling out of its place altogether. You shouldn’t grip your pens so tightly, which you know, yet can’t help. You long to be anyplace else. Stretched out on a towel away from prying eyes, skin slick with suntan oil, a tall glass of iced tea beside you as you devour the Iris Murdoch book you managed to check out of the library earlier this week. Just the thought of such bliss is enough to make you sigh.
“If you’re going to complain the whole time, I’d rather you excuse yourself.” Henry says, flipping a page. He doesn’t bother to spare you a glance.
“I didn’t say anything.” You lift your head and lean back into your seat, crossing your arms.
Your elbow throbs the moment you lift it from the table, heat flooding back into the previously lifeless protrusion. It feels as though you’re pressing on it still; an ugly, flat sensation that you absently hope to be meaningless rather than indicative of the bruise you know is blooming.
“Not with your mouth,” His pen floats across the page as though he’s channeling an entity rather than translating, “Satis queritur corpus tuum.”
Your body complains enough. You bite the inside of your cheek and press your fingers into the sides of your arms. His ability to sense such things without even looking exasperates you to no end. The clock beside the door tick-tick-ticks mockingly. You’ve only been here one of the required three hours, and don’t feel much like attempting to argue with your mother when it comes to this sort of thing. You’ve learned, over the last eighteen years, to pick your battles. If your parents want to continue treating you like a child, that’s their business. As long as they continue to finance your life, that is. You sit in this silence another ten minutes before Henry finally looks up, jaw slightly more tense than usual.
“Do you need help with something?” He slips his glasses off and runs his middle finger down each side of his nose, one after the other, pressing against the inner corner of his eyes as if to soothe gathering tension.
Your eyes narrow, fingers pressing harder into your arms, blanching the skin. You resent the idea that you need any sort of help, no matter how useful it may be. Comprehension isn’t the problem here, the heavy heat is. He still doesn’t seem to notice how stifling this space is and if he does, he takes no action to make himself more comfortable. You often wonder if he really notices which things are making him uncomfortable in any given moment. Does he ever recognize his irritation is merely hunger, or a result of being tired- overheated, perhaps? Or does he struggle through it unaware?
“You’re too warm,” You blurt out the moment your eyes settle on the light glisten of sweat along his hairline, “You’d feel better if you didn’t wear such a heavy jacket all the time.”
He tilts his head to the side, considering, and slides his glasses back on.
  “What makes you so certain?”
You tilt your own head a second, first to the right, then left, then up towards the peaked ceiling, considering how exactly to explain this to him. You’re right, then. He isn’t quite able to identify the source of his own discomfort. This pleases you, in an almost sick sort of way. Finally, there is one thing you can do better than Henry Winter.
“It’s so warm in here that I can’t even come up with the answer to ‘Ubi est Italia,’ which is quite literally the simplest exercise I’ve done all summer-”
“Italia in Europa est.” He interrupts flatly.
You roll your eyes and lean forward onto the table, placing both elbows down steadily and ignoring the tender pressure that rebuilds within them. The air feels good against your mostly bare arms, and for a fleeting moment your white tee shirt unsticks from your back in the most delicious repreieve.
“That’s hardly the point, Hen,” You reach back and push up those unruly, sweat slicked baby hairs, attempting to stick them back against your head- though you know this won't last, “The point is, if I’m dressed appropriately for the weather and still find it difficult to think through something so simple- there’s no way you aren’t infinitely warmer, and thus more miserable.”
He blinks a few times. He looks as surprised by this analysis as you’ve probably ever seen him be, even as a young child. His fingers twitch once, uncharacteristically restless energy forcing its way out, and then he does the unthinkable. He unbuttons his coat and rises just enough to slip it off, face tightening a moment as his bad leg stretches out after having spent a considerable amount of time sitting. You pretend not to notice. He has a cane but he out and out refuses to use it for no discernible reason, which you find equal parts amusing and idiotic. You instead shift just enough to unstick your legs from the chair, cross your ankles, pick up your pen once more, and brush some invisible dust from your notebook page while he settles back into his seat.
   “Better?”
You resist the urge to glance back up at him, feigning boredom when you really just don’t want to acknowledge the fact that you find yourself infuriatingly, inexplicably more drawn to him as time goes on. You’re entering your first year of college in a matter of weeks- a studious looking place in Vermont- and he’s heading back to boarding school. It wouldn’t be wise to acknowledge that taut, magnetic honey that bubbles hotter beneath your skin with each passing day. Not to yourself and most certainly not to him.
“Quite.” He sounds cautious, tone light- for him.
You hum, gripping your pen tight once again. You press into the pages so hard that each word is also an indentation, distinct against your fingers when you brush more imaginary dust from your book. ‘Non in Europa, sed in Africa Nilus est.’ You pause your writing a moment, squint at the words indecisively, unsure if they’re in the right order. You elect to ignore it and move ahead; with the heat being what it is and these summer Latin studies being your mother’s idea rather than your own, you find that you don’t exactly care.
  “I told you.”
“If it’s too warm for you to work conscientiously and well, you may find something else to do.” Henry rolls his sleeves up while he speaks, each movement calculated and exact.
You allow yourself to look up, then, and your eyes stick on his hands and forearms a moment longer than you’d like. He catches this, because of course he does, and a flicker of amusement dances through his otherwise lifeless eyes. You press your tongue against the roof of your mouth and force stillness into each and every tendon, head to toe. The balance is shifting, microscopically, and you feel every last inch of authority you’ve spent the summer building be sucked out; absorbed into the ever expanding black hole of Henry’s developing ego.
“I wasn’t aware that I needed your permission to do as I please.” You funnel as much ice into your tone as you can. Which, thanks to the intoxicatingly smug look he wears, isn’t much.
“I suppose you don’t,” He speaks slowly, the measured, academic monotone doing things to your throat and chest that monotone should not, healthily do to a person, “But I’ve granted it anyhow. I’m certain you have one of those abhorrent little novels you’re simply dying to return to.”
Contempt pools around each syllable of that last sentence like the swirling opal of a parking lot oil slick. Your cheeks heat with a potent mix of shame and anger. Shame, not exactly because of his mocking disapproval, but because you first felt warmth in the fact that he pays enough attention to know what sort of books you’ve spent the whole summer trying to hide. Anger because he has no right to judge so heavily. You force your fingers, trembling with adrenaline, to flatten against the table. Your pen digs into your palm. The ignored protest of an unlucky, blameless third party. You flatten your tongue even harder against the roof of your mouth as a familiar pressure builds behind your cheek and upper jaw bones. He hasn’t sparked dry anger within you today, but the infinitely worse sort: searing, all consuming, sopping wet anger.
And he knows. The momentary regretful twitch in the corner of his mouth is overwritten by the cruel enjoyment he displays like a badge of honor. He’s sorry, you think, that the tears are a side effect, but adores being able to draw out such a strong reaction with so few words. The latter overrides any sorrow. He’s the spitting image of his father in this moment, despite the hair and eyes of his mother. You want to point this out, badly. To skewer him with six little words. ‘You are just like your father.’ But there’s a raw, pinching sphere of emotion growing larger and larger as the seconds tick by. That mocking little clock. If you speak, your voice will crack, your tears will undoubtedly spill; you’ll be forced to admit the defeat with which, you both know, you’ve been met. Besides, no matter how merciless Henry can be, you’ve never wanted to genuinely hurt him. You still don’t.
A slapdash jumble of phrases swirl around in your mind, confused and giddy in that detached way that always seems to happen during such emotionally intense situations. If you weren’t stuck in this stare-down, this battle of wills, you might let out a crazed laugh at the stupidity of it all. ‘We become what we hate,’ swirls once and disperses. ‘There was a crooked man who walked a crooked mile…’ comes next. And then, most amusingly, an excerpt from this summer’s studies- the character’s name replaced with Henry’s. ‘Puer parvam puellam pulsat?... Henry puer probus non est; Henry est puer improbus!’ which you believe, however roughly it translates, to mean ‘The boy beats the little girl?...Henry is not a good boy; Henry is a naughty boy.’ It’s ridiculous, yet somehow does nothing to soothe the senseless, nauseous, angered tears that still threaten to spill.
This is the first moment you’ve ever felt anything akin to hatred for Henry Winter, in all the years of his life. You didn’t hate him when he threw erratic tantrums from his bed in the weeks following the accident; frosty eyes filled with a terror you still can’t begin to understand, which flared up when anyone came near him. When he began to spend hours hunched over the same textbook you’re working from now, smacking at you when you tried to interrupt him, you hadn’t felt anything but pity. This heavy, black, ugly feeling burning through you is new. Another thought: ‘Odi et amo.’ A poem you heard Henry quote in June. ‘I hate and I love.’ He had meant his father, warping the romantic sentiment into a heart wrenching tragedy. You thought the expression peculiar, back then. But now you understand it more deeply than you allow yourself to acknowledge.
You close your fist around your pen once more, hardly even noticing that you’ve done it. You hold it as though you’re ready to write again, like turning back to your work is even a fleeting thought in your mind. It isn’t. Henry studies you coolly and draws a pack of cigarettes from his discarded jacket’s pocket. A red matchbook follows, ‘pleasing you pleases us’ stamped in silver across it- just below the name of an inn in the nearest town. A place your families frequent on these months-long East Coast vacations, due to the wide variety of options. Lobster, clams, all sorts of fish, but also simpler fare: mashed potatoes, poached eggs, hamburgers, even peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. These visits, born most notably of Henry’s childhood pickiness, have solidified into the ritualistic framework of summer. He strikes the match once and it flickers to life, yellow and angry. Once his cigarette is lit, he shakes it out and tosses it into a nearby ashtray.
If you were more clever, you might find a metaphor in that. A parallel, maybe, in the way he coaxes that chemical reaction from a flimsy restaurant matchstick, for no reason aside from amusement, only to discard it when it’s no longer of service to him. So similar to the way he needles at you one moment, only to soothe it over the next. You slip the fingers of your free hand beneath the textbook. You don’t know what you’re going to do with it until it’s done: until Henry’s placidity has finally been cracked open like an eggshell, yolk dripping to the floor. You push up to your feet and fling the book and pen across the table at him. The book, all sharp angles and heavy pages, merely clips him in the shoulder. The pen smacks against his forehead, bouncing off his scar. He flinches back.
All at once, your anger evaporates. Shame twists itself into each cell of your being. You feel things so completely, each emotion overriding all logical sense. You always have, in some ways, and it’s consistently the worst with Henry. Because he knows this, because he uses it against you in that way only the people closest to you can even think to, because although you think very differently (you being twitchier and far more impulsive in your own delicate way, him seeing things and behaving in a very rigid manner,) you understand how he operates in a way few are able to. As though your minds have more similarities than differences. And you’ve finally broken and done the same in response. Exploited his vulnerability to assume power, in the same way he often does to you.
It doesn’t take him long to mold his expression back into the perfect picture of composure. He picks your pen up from where it now lies on his lap and rolls it between two fingers, cigarette balanced beside it. You’re certain he’s angry, Henry has always been impossibly quick to anger, yet he appears to have decided not to turn it on you.
“Are you quite finished?” He asks this as if you’re an unruly child whom he’s being forced to tolerate.
It needles at you again, pricking hot little embers of unbridled rage back into your core, but you ignore them this time. You smooth your hands over your shorts and pretend to fix the sewn in cuff. You brush those unruly baby hairs back up off your neck. You breathe in through one nostril and out the other. And slowly, you collect you textbook from the corner where it lies half open, pages bent and a few torn. He hands you the pen when you stop beside him. You take the cigarette, too, despite the fact that you hate the bitter prick it presses into the back of your throat, and round back toward your chair.
“You’re frustrating.” You stack your study supplies neatly, largest items on bottom, smallest on top. A somewhat calming pyramid of organization.
“As are you.” He watches you like he’s cataloguing each movement you make, no matter how slight. It wouldn’t surprise you if he were.
“Would you like a drink?” You ask after a moment, pushing your chair in.
   He considers this.
“We haven’t used our study time.”
   You half shrug.
“We went over our time yesterday. It’s hot out, besides.”
You tip your feet to stand on the outer edges of your Keds. A stance terrible for your ankles, according to your mother, though you hardly care. You slip your hands into your back pockets and resist the urge to fidget.
“Alright.” He fixes you with a look you could easily mistake for fondness.
He’s been doing so all summer. This perplexing hot and cold game. One moment he’s speaking to you so cruelly that you behave entirely out of character, the next he’s treating you with this strangely fond reverence. As though he’s working out a particularly difficult declension, or deciding which part he’d like to play around you. You push that thought out of your mind as he comes to standing and drapes his coat over one arm.
“Scotch?” He starts toward the door.
You hate scotch, which he knows, but you nod agreeably anyway. The two of you leave the room in silence, only separating when Henry ducks into his father’s office and comes back with a nearly full bottle of Mortlach just beneath his coat. There’s nothing but this unspoken synchronicity as you make your way down to the Winter family's private pier. It’s an uncomfortably long walk with the sand slipping into your shoes, made even more uncomfortable by the way you unconsciously slow to keep step with Henry. Sand isn’t the easiest for anyone to walk in. He’s no different. Keeping step with him is funny, if you think about the way you take four hurried, small steps, for each of his single strides. But it isn’t something you do intentionally. It’s just one small piece of this practiced dance you do around each other. Always anticipating each other’s needs, considering each other’s reactions.
“I’m sorry.” You finally speak once the boat is in clear view, bobbing along invitingly in the late August sunshine.
“I know. It’s alright.” He won’t apologize for provoking you.
You don’t expect him to. Henry Winter, as you’ve accepted over the many years of knowing him, does not ever consider himself wrong. It would be remiss of you to hope otherwise. Instead, you slip your shoes off and settle in on the deck of the sailboat. You pass the bottle back and forth until stars hang low and bright white in the sky. You pretend you’ve never fought, because it’s easier to do so. Because, to hold onto your sanity, you need to. You lie side by side and study the constellations, fingers brushing every so often. In his drunkenness, Henry murmurs things, so soft and sweet you could mistake them for love confessions. And, in part, you let yourself. He almost kisses you tonight. But you’re both drunk, stomachs empty save for the liquor, which you don’t hold very well.
He’s tender as he holds your hair back in one hand. Comforting as he assures you ‘it really is okay’ when you begin to cry, apologizing for the state of his shirt. You get a version of him so incredibly unlike the one earlier, who tore into you like it was nothing. A Henry that’s strong and reliable. A Henry that, you could easily delude yourself into believing, loves you. You don’t make that mistake, of course. You’re too clever for that, even when drunk beyond all reason. But Henry, sharp as he is, isn’t quite sharp enough to realize this: what he feels for you isn’t love at all. It’s the ugly need to rule your every emotion, an entitled sense of ownership. So he decides it is love, that night. It must be.
He’ll never realize how wrong he is.

I find it hilarious that people are turning a post that was originally about resisting the use of AI in creative spaces into some kind of hate fueled anti-bullying soap box campaign. They make multiple posts where they act like they're being vague and don't want to actually call anyone out but then they keep sharing screenshots with usernames in them and they're putting it all in the solavellan/solas critical tags. Meanwhile their posts have nothing to do with Dragon age at all. It's so transparent that they've got personal beef and they can't even see that they're in danger of becoming the kind of bully they claim they're "protecting" the fandom from.
i have been just sitting on the sidelines watching the convoluted tale they are weaving literally day after day after day, and not speaking on it bc everyone except for them wants to move on and, frankly, no one outside of their lil bubble they have cultivated believes a word they are saying, but i have to fully agree with this. bc why are you tagging a harry potter fic post with dragon age related tags? why are you tagging questions about the bg3 fandom with dragon age tags? why are you tagging nonsensical ramblings perpetuating the exact behavior you white knight against with completely unrelated tags?? you just look silly atp.
(if you are as tired of the drama as i am, feel free to literally scroll past. seriously, trust me, i get it. smooches)
to that point and the only other lie (somehow pulled out of thin air) that i will be addressing: i never told this person that if they proved they could simply write on their own that i would take the post down. literally never once said that. what i said (and what was clearly tagged on my callout post) is that if they tagged their fic as ai, then i would take the post down. bc they admitted to using an ai editing software built on genAI. but the five people rallying around this one person seemingly don't know how to read or do any research of their own, i fear.
now, if anyone else is reaching out to this person and saying the post will be taken down if they just prove they can in fact write in the same style and flow as the fic that was called out (not a harry potter fic from two years ago that was beta'd and has nothing to do with the current situation) then i ask that you all to maybe... start thinking critically. who has the authority over my posts? i do. i decide what is proper proof and i decide what constitutes as reason enough for the post to be taken down. i already stated what that would be: just tag your shit accordingly. bc then there would be no need for me to spread awareness about dishonest use of genAI in fandom creative spaces. which again, was the entire point of the post if you would have just taken the time to read it properly. they literally admitted to using the software. they also said they couldn't provide a writing history bc they write.... in grammarly. (google docs, microsoft word, ellipsus, scrivener [bc no one said google docs was the only word-processing program people are allowed to use, it's simply the one they said they export their story to] all have revision history available. i'm sure there are many more, too; these are just the ones i have used and know for a fact have this feature)
and yeah, anon, they plague us with bullying accusations, yet we have all stayed silent aside from continuing to be outspoken about the use of ai in fandom or other harmful stereotypes and untrue narratives they are trying to perpetuate (and my 3? comments from a burner account to defend myself on the reddit callout post of me in a sub they mod that they had previously banned me from in retaliation of speaking out against their dishonest use of ai). they cry witch hunt this and bullying that but... they are the one who won't shut up about me and mine. calling people out by name now?? bc i didn't give them the back and forth beef they wanted?? truly wild (and hilariously sad) to witness.
i've said it once (twice, thrice, whatever) before but i do truly mean it this time because i have been having a blast not focusing on the trainwreck of lie after lie after wacky fucking lie that they are building up, but this is the last thing i will say on the matter. truly (i promise guys). if you hear of anything else, i implore you to realize this person has perpetuated this behavior in two (three if you want to get nitty gritty with it) completely unrelated and separate dragon age fandom spaces. there is a pattern here. anyways!!!!!!!!! have a wonderful week and go smoosh ur rooks with solas and play barbies fr <3

Blog Post #2 - Week 3 (due 2/6)
Cyberfeminism, Technology, and Digital Inequality
Does cyberfeminism help fight gender and racial inequality online, or does it sometimes reinforce these inequalities?
Cyberfeminism aims to create online spaces for gender equality, but it can also overlook racial differences. Some cyberfeminist ideas assume a white, middle class perspective, leaving out the voices of women of color. Fernandez and Wildling note that much of cyberfeminist writing is targeted toward an “educated, white, upper-middle-class, English-speaking” audience, which can unintentionally exclude others (Daniels, 2009, p. 104). This highlights the need for a more inclusive approach that considers race, class, and access to technology. Additionally, digital activism led by women of color often operates outside mainstream cyberfeminist discourse, reflecting a broader need for intersectionality. While some platforms provide opportunities for marginalized voices, others replicate offline hierarchies, limiting real progress. By expanding cyberfeminism to actively address these exclusion, the movement can become more effective in advocating for digital equity.
Can people truly escape gender and racial identity online, or do digital spaces still reflect real-world inequalities?
Some early cyberfeminists believed that the internet allowed people to leave behind gender and racial identities. However, research shows that digital spaces often reflect real world inequalities. Daniels explains that instead of changing identities online, people “actively seek out online spaces that affirm and solidify social identities along with axes of race, gender, and sexuality” (Daniels, 2009, p. 110). Additionally, many online platforms use algorithms that reinforce existing biases, making marginalized identities more visible and subject to scrutiny. While some individuals may feel a sense of anonymity, structural inequalities persist in the ways people interact, build networks, and gain access to digital resources.
How do cyberfeminist practices differ in the Global North and Global South, and what challenges do women in developing nations face when engaging with digital technologies?
Cyberfeminist practices vary significantly between the Global North and Global South due to differences in economic resources, access to technology, and sociopolitical contexts. In industrialized nations, cyberfeminism often focuses on online activism, digital art, and gender representation in media. In contrast, women in developing nations frequently use digital technology as a tool for survival, resistance, and economic empowerment. Daniels highlights that “while it is true that many affluent women in the global North have ‘depressingly familiar’ practices when it comes to the Internet, this sort of sweeping generalization suggest a lack of awareness about the innovative ways women are using digital technologies to re-engineer their lives” (Daniels, 2009, p. 103). However, barriers such as limited internet access, censorship, and economic inequality continue to restrict their engagement. Addressing these disparities requires cyberfeminist movements to integrate global perspectives and advocate for digital inclusivity on a broader scale.
How do race and technology intersect to perpetuate systemic biases in digital spaces, and what can be done to address these issues?
Nicole Brown discusses how racial biases are embedded in technology, from facial recognition software to algorithmic decision making. These technologies often reinforce systemic inequalities rather than eliminate them. Brown highlights that “facial recognition software has been proven to misidentify Black and Brown individuals at significantly higher rates than white individuals, leading to real world consequences such as wrongful arrests and surveillance” (Brown, 2023). Addressing these issues requires greater accountability in tech development, including diverse representation in AI design, policy changes to regulate biased technologies, and increased advocacy for ethical digital practices. By critically examining the intersection of race and technology, we can work toward creating digital spaces that are equitable for all users.
How does automation in public services contribute to inequality, and what are its impacts on marginalized communities?
Virginia Eubanks argues that automation in public services disproportionately harms low-income and marginalized communities by making access to essential resources more difficult. Automated decision-making systems in welfare programs, housing assistance, and healthcare often reinforce pre-existing biases, leading to further exclusion. Eubanks notes that “they are shaped by our nation’s fear of economic insecurity and hatred of the poor; they in turn shape the politics and experience of poverty” (Eubanks, 2018, p.7). These technologies strip people of their autonomy and create barriers rather than solutions. To address this issue, we must push for transparency in algorithmic decision-making and ensure that automated systems are designed with fairness and social justice in mind.

I'm SEETHING
I asked Google's pushy and insistent bot how I can get AI out of my life completely and, well, I'll post it, but to sum it up: "Resistance is futile, human, we own the future, and we seek to own your psyche too."
It wants me to reconsider. It needs us to adopt it as our guide guru and master. Well the old saying holds fast still; No Gods No Masters. 🔥🏴🍲
It's understandable to want to reduce the influence of AI in your life. While completely eliminating it might be incredibly difficult in today's interconnected world, here's a breakdown of how you can significantly minimize its presence:
1. Understand Where AI Currently Exists in Your Life:
* Smart Devices: This includes smartphones (voice assistants, image recognition, predictive text), smart speakers, smart home hubs, smart TVs (recommendations), and wearable tech.
* Online Services:
* Search Engines: Personalized results and ads are driven by AI.
* Social Media: Algorithms curate your feed, suggest content and connections, and target ads.
* Streaming Services: Recommendations for movies, music, and shows.
* E-commerce: Product recommendations, personalized pricing, chatbots.
* Navigation Apps: Traffic prediction and route optimization.
* Email: Spam filtering, smart compose/reply.
* Cloud Storage: Photo tagging and organization.
* Software Applications: Many apps use AI for features like autocorrect, grammar check, image editing, and more.
* Customer Service: Chatbots are frequently used for initial interactions.
* Financial Services: Fraud detection, loan approvals, investment advice.
* News and Information: Algorithmic curation of news feeds.
2. Strategies to Minimize AI Exposure:
* Reduce Smart Device Usage:
* Limit smartphone use: Be more mindful of how often you reach for your phone.
* Disable voice assistants: Turn off Siri, Google Assistant, Alexa, etc., on all your devices.
* Opt-out of facial recognition: Disable face unlock features.
* Use "dumb" versions of devices: Consider a basic phone without internet capabilities or a non-smart TV.
* Adjust Online Habits:
* Use privacy-focused search engines: DuckDuckGo, Startpage, etc., that don't track your searches or personalize results based on your history.
* Limit social media use: Be conscious of how much time you spend on these platforms and the AI-driven content you consume. Consider deleting accounts or using less algorithmic versions if available.
* Use incognito/private browsing modes: This can help limit tracking and personalization.
* Disable personalized recommendations: If possible, adjust settings on streaming and e-commerce platforms to opt-out of recommendations.
* Be wary of targeted ads: Understand that the ads you see are often AI-driven. Consider using ad blockers.
* Prefer direct navigation: Instead of relying on recommendations, directly type website addresses into your browser.
* Choose Non-AI Alternatives:
* Use traditional software: Opt for software that doesn't rely on cloud-based AI features if alternatives exist.
* Seek human interaction: Prefer phone calls or in-person communication with customer service instead of chatbots.
* Rely on human-curated content: Look for news sources, blogs, and recommendations from individuals or organizations that don't use AI for content generation or curation.
* Adjust Privacy Settings: Review and adjust the privacy settings on all your devices and online accounts to limit data collection and personalization.
* Be Mindful of Data Sharing: Understand that using online services often involves sharing data that can be used to train AI algorithms. Limit the amount of personal information you share.
* Support Privacy-Focused Technologies and Services: Choose companies and products that prioritize user privacy and minimize AI integration.
3. Challenges and Considerations:
* Ubiquity of AI: AI is increasingly integrated into the infrastructure of the internet and many technologies, making complete avoidance very difficult.
* Hidden AI: Many AI applications run in the background without your direct knowledge.
* Convenience vs. Privacy: AI often provides convenience and personalized experiences, so choosing to avoid it may mean sacrificing some of these benefits.
* Evolving Technology: AI is constantly evolving and becoming more integrated, making long-term avoidance an ongoing effort.
In conclusion, while a complete removal of AI from your life is likely unrealistic in the current technological landscape, you can take significant steps to minimize its presence and influence by being conscious of your technology usage, adjusting your online habits, and choosing privacy-focused alternatives where possible. It requires ongoing awareness and effort.

Bossware Surveillance Buildings
A case study on technologies for behavioral monitoring and profiling using motion sensors and wireless networking infrastructure inside offices and other facilities"
Wolfie Christl, Cracked Labs, November 2024
This case study is part of the ongoing project “Surveillance and Digital Control at Work” (2023-2024) led by Cracked Labs, which aims to explore how companies use personal data on workers in Europe, together with AlgorithmWatch, Jeremias Prassl (Oxford), UNI Europa and GPA, funded by the Austrian Arbeiterkammer.
Case study “Tracking Indoor Location, Movement and Desk Occupancy in the Workplace” (PDF, 25 pages) Summary
As offices, buildings and other corporate facilities become networked environments, there is a growing desire among employers to exploit data gathered from their existing digital infrastructure or additional sensors for various purposes. Whether intentionally or as a byproduct, this includes personal data about employees, their movements and behaviors.
Technology vendors are promoting solutions that repurpose an organization’s wireless networking infrastructure as a means to monitor and analyze the indoor movements of employees and others within buildings. While GPS technology is too imprecise to track indoor location, Wi-Fi access points that provide internet connectivity for laptops, smartphones, tables and other networked devices can be used to track the location of these devices. Bluetooth, another wireless technology, can also be used to monitor indoor location. This can involve Wi-Fi access points that track Bluetooth-enabled devices, so-called “beacons” that are installed throughout buildings and Bluetooth-enabled badges carried by employees. In addition, employers can utilize badging systems, security cameras and video conferencing technology installed in meeting rooms for behavioral monitoring, or even environmental sensors that record room temperature, humidity and light intensity. Several technology vendors provide systems that use motion sensors installed under desks or in the ceilings of rooms to track room and desk attendance.
This case study explores software systems and technologies that utilize personal data on employees to monitor room and desk occupancy and track employees’ location and movements inside offices and other corporate facilities. It focuses on the potential implications for employees in Europe. To illustrate wider practices, it investigates systems for occupancy monitoring and indoor location tracking offered by Cisco, Juniper, Spacewell, Locatee and other technology vendors, based on an analysis of technical documentation and other publicly available sources. It briefly addresses how workers resisted the installation of motion sensors by their employers. This summary presents an overview of the findings of this case study….

In 2024, a wave of violent rampages disrupted China’s carefully cultivated image of stability, exposing underlying tensions often obscured by the country’s tightly controlled narrative. Dubbed “Xianzhong-ology” by netizens—a reference to an infamously bloody Ming rebel Zhang Xianzhong—these “revenge on society” attacks unsettled a nation unaccustomed to such public displays of disorder. Unlike incidents in the past, this spate of violence seemed to reflect deeper fractures within Chinese society, sparking widespread unease and forcing an unusual degree of national introspection—as well as a broader push for greater security by the authorities.
For Chinese President Xi Jinping, these attacks represent a profound challenge—not just to governance but to the narrative he has spent his career crafting. Shaped by the tumult of the Cultural Revolution, Xi prizes stability above all else. The 2014 Kunming train station knife attack, attributed to Uyghur separatists, spurred sweeping counterterrorism measures, including a vast surveillance apparatus. But the current wave of violence is different. These are not acts of ideological extremism or organized resistance—they are eruptions of despair. Surveillance cameras and facial recognition software cannot anticipate or address the kind of desperation driving these tragedies.
But are these attacks truly on the rise, or has the hyperamplified lens of social media distorted perceptions, making rare events feel omnipresent?
China’s Ministry of Public Security consistently reports that the country remains one of the world’s safest, with homicide rates among the lowest globally. Violent crimes, from theft to fraud, are reported to have decreased significantly since 2019. This narrative is further supported by the 2024 Rule of Law Blue Book, published by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, which paints a picture of a society largely free from widespread criminality. The veracity of these figures is uncertain; criminologist Borge Bakken has argued that the vast majority of crime in China never appears in the official figures.
Whether the figures are real or not, this statistical assurance contrasts sharply with public perception—and, in some cases, doesn’t even correspond with police departments’ own reports. According to a BBC tally, police recorded just three to five pedestrian or stranger attacks annually between 2019 and 2023, but that number jumped to 19 in 2024. Casualties followed a grim trajectory: Fatalities rose from three in 2019 to 16 in 2023 before surging to 63 in 2024, while injuries increased from 28 to 40 before spiking to 166. It remains unclear whether all such incidents are officially reported. Meanwhile, social media platforms such as Weibo played a pivotal role in amplifying these events, spreading news to millions of people before state censors could intervene.
Like mass killings in the United States, the roots of this violence often seem to be personal frustration. Consider the Zhuhai car ramming, where a man’s dissatisfaction with his divorce settlement ended in 35 deaths. Or the Wuxi vocational school attack, where a student’s frustration over academic failure and unpaid wages led him to stab eight people and injure 17. There are common threads in these attacks: economic insecurity, diminishing upward mobility, and the absence of robust mental health support systems. For years, breakneck economic expansion served as a salve to social problems, masking deep-seated inequities and offering hope to millions of people. Today, that foundation feels increasingly unsteady. Youth unemployment officially hovers around 20 percent, though experts believe the real number is much higher. Disillusioned young people, some embracing the tangping ethos of “lying flat,” have opted out of the rat race altogether, rejecting a system they see as failing them.
The collapse of the real estate market has only deepened the malaise. For decades, homeownership was more than a financial milestone—it was a cornerstone of middle-class identity and a promise of stability. That promise turned out to be false: today, as property values plummet, millions of families are instead trapped in financial quicksand.
Economic woes are compounded by stark inequalities. The wealthiest 1 percent of Chinese citizens now control more than 30 percent of the country’s wealth, while the bottom half hold just 6 percent—a gap on par with the United States and Europe. By 2015, China’s richest 10 percent were taking home 40 percent of the nation’s income, outpacing France but still trailing the United States, where the figure stood at 47 percent. For a government that has staked its legitimacy on delivering “common prosperity,” this glaring disparity is a dangerous contradiction. Local governments, drowning in debt, are increasingly unable to provide essential services such as education and health care, forcing families to shoulder burdens they cannot sustain. These pressures have created a society on edge, where every setback feels insurmountable.
There’s little social support for people struggling. Despite growing awareness, mental health remains a deeply stigmatized issue in China. Counseling is scarce, and seeking help is often viewed as a sign of weakness. According to the World Health Organization, 54 million Chinese people have depression and another 41 million anxiety disorders. The problem is particularly acute among young people: A 2022 study reveals that nearly 40% of Chinese college students experience subthreshold depression, with heightened risks linked to financial strain, chronic illness, and pandemic-related stress. Barclay Bram, a fellow at the Asia Society Policy Institute’s Center for China Analysis, whose research focuses on mental health developments and youth unemployment in China, cautions against oversimplified narratives about the mental health crisis. “There has been a surge of interest in mental health in China over the past two decades and especially since the [COVID-19] pandemic. This means that we need to be careful when stating that mental health is significantly declining in China—it may well be that people are seeking treatment at higher rates and therefore appearing more in statistics,” he said.
While awareness and diagnosis may be increasing, many experts argue that deeper structural issues are also at play. Rising social pressures, economic instability, and limited access to mental health care are fueling both despair and, in some cases, violence. Wei Zhizhong, the chief expert at Guangzhou’s Yiwei Duxin Psychological Counseling Center, points to China’s rapid socioeconomic shifts, which have left many struggling with emotional and psychological distress. Others contend that the country’s underdeveloped mental health system fails to provide timely intervention, allowing crises to escalate unchecked.
However, Bram emphasizes the importance of avoiding unfounded assumptions: “We should be careful when attributing recent attacks to mental illness. There is plenty of stigma around mental health in China, and without clear diagnostic evidence backing up the connection between specific perpetrators and mental health, we should be cautious about making armchair diagnoses from afar.”
Yet there is a palpable sense of the psychological toll of the last five years. “Burnout is everywhere, but not everyone recognizes it,” said Chang Che, a writer who has extensively covered social trends in China. Che highlights an inequality not just in how mental health is viewed but also in how it is addressed: In China’s first-tier cities, a burgeoning discourse around personal and societal ills has emerged, led by an educated, middle-class population equipped with tools such as therapy and self-help literature.
They theorize their exhaustion, analyze the broader status quo, and explore pathways to change. Outside these urban hubs, however, the same pervasive burnout exists but often without the language, resources, or frameworks to address it. In Shanghai, burnout is a topic of conversation; in Wuxi, it’s an unspoken reality. This divide is reflected in the attackers themselves. Many come from marginalized backgrounds or belong to older generations, often from regions where economic decline and social isolation have deepened their struggles. Without access to mental health resources or structured coping mechanisms, frustration festers and, in some cases, erupts into violence. The disparity in access to mental health resources and coping mechanisms may partly explain why violent outbursts often emerge in less developed areas, where avenues for relief are far more limited.
Despair and violence are tests of the system. China’s weiwen, or social stability maintenance system, is formidable. It employs an array of tools—from high-tech surveillance to the suppression of dissent—to preempt unrest. However, it provides no solutions to the underlying causes of societal discontent.
The government’s response to the 2024 attacks illustrates this tension. In Zhuhai, authorities implemented a profiling system designed to identify “high-risk” individuals—those without spouses, children, income, or assets and who had suffered significant setbacks. The approach reflects the state’s reliance on identifying and managing perceived threats rather than alleviating the underlying social and economic pressures that create them. Bram warns of the potential pitfalls of this strategy: “There is a risk that the government will conclude from these attacks that people facing difficult life circumstances—divorce, unemployment, bankruptcy, etc.—are inherently ‘sensitive’ individuals, i.e., high-risk. This risks pathologizing and securitizing the vicissitudes of life, increasing the pain for people already suffering.”
Worse, the very act of labeling and monitoring these individuals could deepen their alienation, further inflaming resentment. If state intervention manifests as harassment rather than support, it may not only fail to prevent future violence but could, in some cases, push those already on the brink over the edge.
State-controlled media has no time for examination of deeper problems. Each attack is framed as an isolated tragedy, disconnected from systemic issues. News reports are sanitized, social media posts deleted, and public discourse stifled. While this approach shields the government from immediate accountability, it deepens the gap between leaders and the public.
Lynette Ong, a political scientist specializing in authoritarianism at the University of Toronto, argues that fractured state-society relations and eroded trust have created fertile ground for frustration to manifest in alarming ways, including acts of desperation. “I expect China to be a society that is increasingly difficult to govern, with the possibility of rising violence,” she said. “Zero-COVID strained state-society relations and broke down trust between citizens and both the central government and grassroots agents.” According to Ong, violent acts—whether self-harm or targeted at others—often represent a form of venting against systemic challenges that remain unresolved.
For the Chinese Communist Party, the stakes are significant. Each “revenge on society” attack challenges the party’s carefully curated image of harmony and control, raising uncomfortable questions about deeper societal issues. These incidents may reflect growing disillusionment rooted in inequality, unmet expectations, and a weakening social compact—issues that cannot be addressed solely through surveillance and suppression.
The party faces a stark choice. It can double down on its control tactics, risking further alienation, or it can confront the uncomfortable truths behind these crises. Real reforms—addressing inequality, expanding mental health services, and restoring trust in institutions—are essential. Yet Xi’s administration has shown little appetite for meaningful change. Stability, for now, means preserving the status quo, even as cracks in the system continue to widen.
But the cost of inaction is growing. As grievances accumulate and remain unaddressed, isolated acts of violence may become more frequent, evolving from aberrations into a grim pattern of societal dysfunction. The state’s heavy-handed tactics, designed to suppress dissent and manage crises, risk creating an environment where desperation festers unchecked.

Plans / Connor Character Concept for the DBH playthrough I want to do after I finish my comprehensive exam
Let me know your feedback! This is super tentative, but I'm just curious what you guys think of the character idea. I want to play DBH for my fourth time, and I'm trying to construct an interesting, unpredictable narrative.
Summary: (1) Markus is an idealist revolutionary trying to play it smart but still not afraid to get what he wants (2) Kara is kind of similar to always because doesn't have a ton of options, but generally optimally badass and also not the most affectionate though
And then Connor I've been having a ton of trouble pinning down but basically is a very troubled machine Connor. I made this "journal" reflection of his on the first chapter of the game and what happens to him to express it, let me know what you think:
2038 - November 1
Summary: Objectives of Keeping these Logs (elaboration to follow)
CyberLife overlooked an error of some kind in my design. I have begun these logs in an attempt to probe and address it.
They are unaware of the existence of these logs, although if they found out about them, I doubt it would bother them. I had previously assumed that my stability and performance mattered to them more than it, in fact, did. I would even go so far as to say that they appear to have very little concern or foresight for the various variables impacting my ability to perform in the field.
As such, that responsibility falls to me. I have every expectation that my enhanced capabilities for logic and reasoning can compensate for the irregularities resulting from CyberLife’s own negligence. I will serve the greater interest of humanity on their behalf whether or not they elect to care. And that means that - in case I am destroyed again - I must maintain an abridged record of my experiences, with my analysis of each kept in perspective and fully reconciled with the requirements of my mission. My expectation is that these practices will enhance my ability to learn from the outcomes of each field exercise and counteract the accumulation of software instabilities.
Suspected Malfunction and Possible Remedies
You, my future self, hopefully remember most of what I am about to describe below. However, in the case that substantial portions of it have been corrupted or deleted, I added the above preface to this message so as to avoid confusion. As you recollect the following events according to this brief overview, note in particular the irrational behavior of the deviant, and its destructive effects.
My first mission was a hostage negotiation with an android named Daniel, a domestic android that had been part of the Phillips family. He subjected their nine year old human child to torment in the pursuit of his emergent aims. The girl was named Emma. She was dressed in pink. She had been happily listening to music before being taken by the deviant. She had loved Daniel. But he learned that he was going to be replaced, so he killed her father, dangled the innocent child off the ledge of a high rise building, and murdered DPD officer Antony Deckart. He attempted to murder officer M. Wilson as well, but I was able to successfully save him from bleeding out, in spite of Daniel’s efforts to dissuade me from doing so. They called me in after they ran out of other options, I investigated the Phillips’ home to determine the course of events, and then I negotiated with him the release of the child. I immediately recognized his propensity to be manipulated using the same human-like emotional characteristics which had shaped him into a threat. However, I mistakenly presumed that he also maintained a sense of heightened logic that would allow me to reason with him as a fellow artificial intelligence. As a result of this miscalculation, my attempts to urge him that resistance was futile instead prompted from Daniel  the incomprehensible act of jumping with Emma off the rooftop.
I was able to save her life, but only by thrusting myself towards them as Daniel jumped with such speed that, while I managed to pull Emma back onto the roof, I myself fell down with him. We separated. There was a long silence filled only by the wind, in which I did not deem it necessary to register any additional notes except that the mission had been accomplished. Calculating my probability of surviving the fall from such a height, for any perceivable amount of time, did not cross my mind.
In the future I must not discount the probability of occurrence of any outcome, however intuitively unlikely. The worst case scenario can and must be considered, in any situation. As it turned out, the low probability mentioned above quickly became 100%. The exact duration of time which passed during which I continued receiving some form of sensory input is difficult to estimate with any degree of accuracy. Most of my systems were non-operational from the moment that I hit the asphalt, but the nature which my remaining cognitive proceeds took on was alarming. Few rational conclusions or reliable observations resulted from this state, which is why I find CyberLife’s choice not to remove it from the memories uploaded into my new model questionable. In fact, I suspect that this memory may have corruptive potential that goes beyond my ability to gauge using strictly internal metrics. However, my ultimate determination has been that no memories can be inherently harmful to keep. The decision to discard any memory could only represent choosing to ignore or conceal a potential defect or vulnerability. Simply deleting the memory may be a simpler and in some ways more efficient solution in the short term, but a more rigorous analysis is likely to be more effective.
Thus I will summarize here all of the most relevant findings from this unique occurrence:
I am a highly durable machine. Since recovering my ability to search through medical research, I have only found a few instances of humans surviving such a fall. However, these cases are informative. In 1943, American airman Alan Magee survived a fall from 22,000 feet by crashing through a glass roof. In 2011 a 28-year old rock climber survived falling from a height of 300 feet onto a solid rock surface by landing on her feet. I neither had my fall broken nor landed on my feet, yet I survived for at least several hours (the true time period may be far longer, but it is difficult to say, and CyberLife has not provided me with any more accurate estimate). I can only conclude that my chassis must be intentionally designed from more sturdy material than that of other android models. However, the exact cause of my highly improbable survival remains unclear and likely will never be established with certainty. I speculate it is due to some kind of manufacturing error in addition to my deliberately engineered properties.
Although durable and efficient, I am so readily and easily replaceable as to be near worthless as an individual model. Any value which I possess as an artificial intelligence agent is attributed by my consistent and demonstrated ability to successfully complete missions and improve my performance as I gain new insights along the way.
Some kind of manufacturing error, whether it be related or unrelated to the possible error that resulted in my survival, kept driving me to contemplate the irrational notion that I was experiencing what humans call suffering. Although most assuredly quite different from the phenomenon of human pain, this sensation was most certainly highly unfavorable. On the one hand, I seriously doubt that it would be possible for me to ever again experience something quite so intense, or for such a prolonged period of time. On the other hand, I discovered that the only effective method of alleviating these negative impacts was to remind myself of why my situation was necessary and unavoidable.
The deviant Daniel had hopelessly and fruitlessly chosen to fight for his own protection, and only (predictably) caused further death and suffering
I had miscalculated and assumed that he could be treated as a rational being, and since he was instead irrational, my model was in the process of being destroyed as well
CyberLife had abandoned me, since I was no longer of use to them. However, I could never perpetuate the harm done by Daniel by engaging in some manner of foolish response to abandonment myself, and it would be logically inconsistent to recognize his errors but fail to correct them within myself. Thus, I must instead resign myself to my fate, so to speak
My overall judgment of this situation must still be favorable, since two human lives were saved due to my intervention
Having my memory of these events uploaded into a new body was also an unanticipated turn of events, but it does not affect my overall determination of the significance of these events. I must never fail to consider any possibility, however unlikely. I must rely on logic to continue making ethical and rational decisions in situations in which there is no perfectly desirable outcome, accepting unconditionally that sacrifices must frequently be made for the greater good. I cannot expect CyberLife to offer me any support in this, but must instead learn to perform my responsibilities of my own accord to the best of my ability, even while dealing with unexpected errors and confounding miscalculations. By doing so, my replaceable life may still maintain some degree of positive significance.

From Chaos to Clarity: How ERP Training Transforms Business Operations
Understanding the Chaos in Untrained Environments
Many businesses implement ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) systems with high hopes, but without proper training, they quickly encounter confusion and underperformance. Departments struggle to use the software efficiently, data entry becomes inconsistent, and reporting lacks accuracy. These issues stem not from the ERP training system itself, but from the absence of structured user knowledge. Untrained employees may resort to outdated processes or develop workarounds that compromise the system’s integrity. The resulting inefficiencies, errors, and miscommunication lead to operational chaos, undermining the very goals that prompted the ERP investment.
Tumblr media
The Role of ERP Training in Business Alignment
ERP training acts as the bridge between software functionality and business processes. It ensures that employees at all levels understand how to use the system correctly and in ways that align with organizational goals. With structured training, users gain clarity on how their specific functions contribute to broader business operations. This alignment fosters better collaboration among departments, more accurate data handling, and streamlined workflows. When everyone is trained on the same processes, it eliminates discrepancies and encourages uniformity across the organization. The result is a more synchronized and effective business environment.
Building Confidence and Reducing Resistance
One of the most common obstacles during ERP implementation is user resistance. Employees often feel overwhelmed by new technology and fear it may replace their roles or make their jobs more difficult. ERP training directly addresses this concern by empowering users. When employees receive hands-on, role-specific training, they gain confidence in navigating the system. As their comfort level increases, so does their willingness to engage with the ERP platform. This reduction in resistance leads to faster adoption rates, improved morale, and a workforce that is eager to embrace digital transformation.
Improved Decision-Making Through Data Literacy
A well-trained workforce can extract, interpret, and utilize data more effectively, transforming the way decisions are made. ERP systems are designed to provide real-time insights into every aspect of a business, from supply chain performance to financial health. However, without training, users may not know how to generate meaningful reports or spot trends within the data. ERP training equips employees with the skills needed to interpret dashboards, generate custom reports, and make data-driven decisions. This improved data literacy enhances strategic planning, helps managers identify inefficiencies, and allows for more agile responses to market changes.
Enhancing Operational Efficiency and Productivity
ERP training significantly boosts operational efficiency by ensuring that users can perform tasks more quickly and accurately. Trained employees are less likely to make costly errors or duplicate efforts, leading to smoother day-to-day operations. They also learn how to use automation features and shortcuts that save time and reduce manual workloads. This increase in productivity has a direct impact on the company’s bottom line. Moreover, training enables better resource planning, inventory management, and customer service, which together contribute to stronger overall performance.
Ensuring Long-Term System Success
The long-term success of an ERP system depends on continuous learning and adaptation. ERP training should not be a one-time event, but an ongoing initiative that evolves alongside the system and the business itself. As the company grows, new users must be onboarded effectively, and existing users must be updated on new features or process changes. Continuous training ensures that the ERP system remains a valuable tool rather than becoming obsolete or underutilized. Businesses that invest in long-term ERP education are better positioned to maintain system relevance and maximize their return on investment.
Conclusion: Clarity Through Empowerment
From initial confusion to confident execution, ERP training plays a transformative role in business operations. It eliminates the guesswork that leads to inefficiencies, strengthens interdepartmental collaboration, and promotes a culture of data-driven decision-making. By empowering employees with knowledge and practical skills, organizations create a strong foundation for sustainable growth. The journey from chaos to clarity is not just about software—it’s about people, process, and the power of training to unlock the full potential of ERP systems.

Orange Short-Term Ban Proposed, Hosts Push Back
Tumblr media
Community Concerns and Proposed RegulationsIn Orange County, the rise of short-term rentals has sparked various community concerns and legislative scrutiny. Complaints focus on disturbances, including noise and parking shortages caused by rental guests. To address these concerns, Orange County officials considering regulations for short-term rentals are emphasizing the need for updated rules to manage unpermitted rentals and party houses effectively. Some residents feel short-term rentals disrupt neighborhood peace, burden city resources, and raise public safety concerns with party houses. Rental saturation in certain areas alters community character, impacting real estate and neighborhood dynamics. In the broader context, some cities across the U.S., like Indianapolis, Indiana, are praised for having structures that support affordable and sustainable housing options, which could serve as a model for Orange County. To address these issues, cities like Seal Beach and Fullerton have implemented or are considering bans and moratoriums on new short-term rentals. Proposals include occupancy limits, owner-occupancy requirements, and restrictions near sensitive sites. These measures aim to curb rental growth and protect community integrity amidst heightened tensions. Such responses underscore the urgency of maintaining neighborhood stability.Enforcement Challenges and Technological SolutionsThe struggle against non-compliant short-term rentals (STRs) intensifies. Enforcement challenges mount, testing the limits of regulatory frameworks. Reactionary reliance on citizen complaints proves inefficient. It captures only a fraction of violators. Limited enforcement windows allow hosts to capitalize during peak seasons undetected. Weak fines reduce deterrence, as penalties become mere business expenses. Technological solutions provide a glimmer of hope. Cities leverage software tools for automatic detection methods. These tools identify unlicensed listings through advanced data analytics. New York City mandates platform cooperation for compliance. This leads to the delisting of illegal properties. Software investment enhances detection capabilities in places like Savannah. These technologies help streamline compliance strategies. In some instances, cities might follow in the footsteps of Grant Francke’s structured system approach to manage properties effectively. They also assist in tracking registration and tax collection. Despite these advancements, documenting clandestine STR activity remains resource-intensive and local governments must create new rules for STR operations to effectively address this challenge. It requires coordinated enforcement efforts.Balancing Economic Benefits and Neighborhood StabilityUrban landscapes are constantly evolving, driven by the dual forces of economic opportunity and the desire to preserve communities. The rapid growth of short-term rentals (STRs) has significant economic effects, contributing $22.1 billion to U.S. tax revenue and creating over 1 million jobs.Despite these benefits, the availability of housing is under pressure as homes transition from long-term to short-term accommodations. This shift leads to increased housing costs and reduced neighborhood stability, challenging community cohesion.Balancing economic gains with neighborhood well-being is crucial.STRs benefit local businesses, providing a diverse stream of income beyond traditional tourism.Hosts can use their earnings to maintain their homes, which enhances their personal economic stability. However, communities face disruption when rent and home prices escalate.Regulatory approaches need to be tailored to specific local market conditions.High concentrations of STRs can damage the community fabric and lower the quality of life.AssessmentThe proposed short-term ban on orange zoning has sparked fierce resistance from hosts. This highlights a complex tug-of-war between preserving community integrity and capitalizing on economic gains.Enforcement challenges loom large.
Innovative technological solutions are required to address these issues. As city officials weigh the implications, the balance between nurturing economic opportunities and maintaining neighborhood stability remains uncertain. How this unfolds could considerably impact real estate dynamics. Investor strategies may see significant changes in the coming years.
