its not even that my pod can't handle it, my buddy kasey has a stupid cracked adrix deck (which makes me wanna build one lowkey) so i know folks can keep up. like if i was pulling out infinite combos against bracket 2-3 decks, then the problem would be more obvious

Foundations Retrospective - Top 10 Commanders

Number 10 - Koma, World Eater - 1,400 decks

Koma, World-Eater pays homage to its Kaldheim counterpart while making itself less annoying to play against. The original Koma, Cosmos Serpent is an infamous kill-on-sight commander due to it being able to protect itself starting on the very next upkeep. Koma, World-Eater ups the creature's size (fitting for a creature the size of an entire plane) and replaces its self-protecting ability with a very high Ward cost. In exchange, it now has to wait a full turn to begin making tokens, and loses protection from board wipes. It still fulfills the role of a control win condition, but in a much more reasonable package.

Koma synergizes with, well, Koma, Cosmos Serpent (53%). If you're already playing big-creature control, one can serve as a backup to the other. Plus, like, they both say the word "Serpent" in their rules text, so clearly the synergize. Speaking of, Koma, World-Eater also synergizes with Whelming Wave (50%), a board wipe which handily ignores Serpents. Adrix and Nev, Twincasters (56%) are also a popular pairing, as they double the already impressive number of tokens that Koma creates, and if there's anything that a Commander player loves, it's doing something twice.

Koma is currently the 45th most popular Simic commander, a long, long way from the original Koma (#12). While it is a very neat control win condition, it doesn't give you a very obvious way to build around it (as evidenced by even its most synergistic cards only coming it around 50%). Sure, once it's in play, it will inevitably win, but that doesn't leave you much of a gameplan other than ramping into it, and there are many, many more interesting Simic ramp commanders. It currently sits right behind Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath (#44), which feels appropriate, as both can be very powerful threats, but don't give you much incentive to build around. Koma, World-Eater is ranked as the 324th most popular commander of this week, with 59 new or updated decklists online. This puts it on a roughly even rate of growth as that of commanders much, much higher on the list like Ezuri, Claw of Predation and OG Koma. This suggests to me that, given time, it may be able to catch up if not surpass commanders like The Pride of Hull Clade (#28). Just probably not soon.

Congratulations to our winners for this week, @squeezyboi, @sparkyyoungupstart, and @deg99!

@squeezyboi — Adrix, River Herald Savant//Nev, Combine Virtuoso

For those wondering, this is meant to be a Modal Double Faced Card of the twins from the Quandrix commander deck. We see here that one has made their way to Ixalan, and the other has ended up on Ravnica. I really like the execution, especially with their card's main theme being continued on. I also really like how they trend towards the same archetypical goal, but are different in the execution, sort of like the split branches of the colleges in Strixhaven.

@sparkyyoungupstart — Yuriko, Tiger of the Sea

Yuriko, the Tiger's Shadow has found her way to Ixalan, becoming a part of the Brazen Coalition. Similar to Adrix and Nev, I really like that there's a reference specifically to the previous incarnation, as well as one to the plane of Kamigawa. I also really like that the raid works well with the ninjutsu, so that once you start attacking, you're incentivized to swing each turn with at least one creature. The only real thing that I have to say against this card is that it isn't confirmed what time period Yuriko is in, so there's a nonzero chance this is less an Omenpath situation and more a Dominarian time rift situation.

@deg99 — Invasive Leviathan

Finally, we have this Ikorian wanderer, who's ended up in one of Ravnica's underground lakes, and is positively thriving. I like that the adapt ability is on curve, because there's a nonzero chance that getting another 4/6 is what you end up doing, and I like that there are ways around the adapt restriction that plays into Ikoria's signature keyword counters.
