Demonstrative Pronouns
Sorry that I just disappeared off the face of the planet. I was working on my writeblr in case anyone is interested. @writingthatstory might I suggest clicking on the Directory and get lost with what I was doing for... eternity lmao.
The demonstrative pronoun celuiand its forms mean this one/ that one/ the one or those/these/the ones.
Quel poste préférez-vous? Le poste à Paris ou le poste à Paris ou le Poste à Lyon?
Quel poste préférez-vous? Celui à Paris ou celui à Lyon?
Demonstrative pronouns agree in number and gender with the noun to which they refer.
Masculine
Celui - this one, that one, the one
ceux- these, those and the ones
Feminine
celle - this one, that one, the one
celles- these, the and those ones
Ces deux venduses sont nulles! et celles du grand magasin de ton quartier?
As with demonstrative adj’s, -ci, and -là can be added after a form of celui to distinguish between people or objects that are closer (celle-ci) or farther (celui-là) . A form of calui can also be followed by a relative clause to mean the ones that or the ones whose.
on va à cette réunion-ci ou à celle qui commence plus tôt?
le comptable de Marc, c’est celui que tu aimes bien?
A prepositional phrase can follow a demonstrative pronoun.
Mes économies et celles de Nathalie.
Ce poste est moins intéressant que celui en Belgique.
Adjective that modify forms of celui must agree with them in number and gender. Past participles should agree with forms of celui when appropriate.
Ceux qui sont fainéants ne vont pas être promus.
Leurs employées sont celles que nous avons vues ici hier?
You can use celui-là or celle-là to refer to someone in a familiar or scornful fashion.
Le gérant de Pizza Roma? ah, celui-là!
Elle croit qu’elle sait tout, celle-là?
Ceci and cela are also demonstrative pronouns. Unlike other pronouns, they do not refer to any noun in particular, but rahter to an idea. Ceci draws attention to something that is about to be said; cela refers to something tha has already been said.
Je vous dis ceci: il ne faut pas démissionner.
On écite les dettes. Cela va sans dire.
BOth ceci and cela have a literary tone to them. In everyday French, use ce or ça. use ce before forms of être; use ça before other verbs.
Before a form of être:
ce sont mes cadres, Abdel et Fatih.
C’est un syndicat?
Before any other verb
Ça m’énerve!
C’est can be used in many constructions
C’est + name
Identifies a person
C’est Brandon
C’est + Article/ adjective + noun
Identifies a person or thing
C’est mon vendeur
C’est + disunctive pronoun
Identifies a person
C’est toi qui as trouvé cette formation.
C’est + adjective
describes an idea or expresses an opinion.
trois semaines de vacances! c’est super!
Infinitive + c’est + infinitive
Draws an equivalency between two actions
partir c’est mourir un peu.
Some notes
Forms of Celui cannot stand alone: they must always be followed by -ci/-là a relative clause or a prepositional phrase.
Use a demonstrative pronoun followed by -ci or -là to express, respectively, the english words latter and former.

50 hour language challenge... update
hiiiiiii.
Here’s my update for the challenge. Hopefully later this week and into the weekened I’ll sit down and get some notes up for y’all. I’ve been mostly focusing on my japanese just because learning the Hiragana and Katakana have been kind of tough for me and it’s kind of been bumming me out because everyone I know seems to have learned it in two weeks, and this is going on 3 months for me, anyway lol. it might sound kind of stupid but I’m probably going to pull a ‘french’ and just move on to learn how to write and what not and hope that I’ll pick it up as I go (that’s essentially what happened to me and french grammar lol)
So anyway here’s my updated hours completed.
French (50 hours):
hours completed: 3
Hours to go: 47
Topics covered:
Really I just went to duo and tested out of some skills which were the uh...

Travel
Dutch (50 hours):

Counting Units
Counting in Japanese! as always please let me know if I need to correct things. This gets confusing to me really fast when I’m typing things out so I wouldn’t be surprised if something is messed up lol.
The teens!
to form numbers 11-19 start with juu and place the additional number you need directly after it. it is much like counting with roman numerals。
じゅういち
juu ichi
11
じゅうに
juu ni
12
じゅうよん 、じゅうさん
juu san
13
じゅうよん 、じゅうし
juu yon, juu shi *
14
じゅうご
juu go
15
じゅうろく
juu roku
16
じゅうなな じゅうしち
juu nana, juu shichi *
17
じゅうはち
juu hachi
18
じゅうきゅう 、 じゅうく
juu jyuu , juu ku *
19
The tens
the tens are formed by combining the single numbers with juu. for example, 20 is two tens, and fifty is five tens. see below for more details.
じゅう
juu
10
にじゅう
ni juu
20
さんじゅう
san juu
30
よんじゅう
yon juu -never shi juu-
40
ごじゅう
jo juu
50

roku juu
60
ななじゅう
nana juu -never shichi juu-
70
あちじゅう
hachi juu
80
きゅうじゅう
kyuu juu -never ju juu-
90
Combining tens and singles
to make numbers like 31, just string the numbers 30 and 1 together.
にじゅういち
ni juu ichi
21
にじゅうに
ni juu ni
22
にじゅうさん
ni juu san
23

so duolingos new XP system?
yea, this is why you pair up other things with duolingo. Listen I know a lot of you probably use Duo and maybe you’re just as upset but lets be real, you can only get so much out of duolingo.
Idk, I guess a lot of people used it to motivate themselves to use it? but like, I feel like those people who are more upset than anything are kind of seeing duo more as a game then anything?
Idk, I guess I’m just not bothered by it because I use duo to reinforce what I already know. so for me if I can get through a lesson with few messes, I know that Im doing well.
So... anyway, I Just wanted to take the time to reinstate to all of you, and so you can go out and say the same fucking, USE OTHER THINGS WITH DUOLINGO. you’ll learn a lot more, won’t be so caught up in the duo ... nightmare, and ffs you’ll learn a lot more.
also, let me know your thoughts about the whole thing cause Im really just indifferent about it all lol.

Spaced reptition
Hey yall I got a question for you.
so, I was watching a TedTalk last night about language learning with adults -something I VERY passionate about, just ask my professors-. and the dude mentions something about spaced repition and how it didn’t work for him. and I was thinking about my own language learning process and how I kind of want to revamp and retry somethings because I feel like I haven’t exactly given them a chance *cough* challenges that I never finish *cough*.
so I was just wondering if yall know of any like software, websites, etc that use spaced repition. I know Anki is one and I need to relearn how to use it because I was so confused when I did use it so I just stopped. xD

れい 、まる、ぜろ
rei, maru, zero *
0
いち
ichi

に
ni
2
さん
san
3
し、よん
shi, yon *
4
ご
go
5
ろく
roku
6
しち、 なな
shichi, nana *
7
はち
hachi
8
く、きゅう
ku, kyuu *
9
じゅう
juu
10
the numbers with a (*) have more than one version. sometimes one version must be used instead of the other, but many times the version used is a personal preference.
there are some cultural reasons for the different versions. the number four in japanese is yon or shi. shi also means death. the number nine in japanese has kyuu and ku. Ku also means suffering. this is part of the reason why these numbers are considered unlucky in Japan.

now if they could just like.. put more interactive things on there lol

The Plus-que- Parfait
Is used to talk about what someone had done or what had occurred before another past action, event or state. Like the passé composé the Pluperfect uses a form of avoir or être - in this case, the imparfait - plus a past participle.
Voter - to vote
j'avais voté
tu avais voté
il/elle avait voté
nous avions voté
vous aviez voté
ils/elles avaient voté
Finir- to finish
j'avais /étais fini
tu avais /étais fini
il/elle avait /était fini/fini/finie
nous avions /étions fini/finis
vous aviez /étiez fini/finis
ils/elles avaient /étaient fini/finis/finies
Nous lui avons dit qu’Hollande avait gagné les élections.
We told her that HOllande had won the election
L’accusé sourait parce que les juges ne l’avaient pas mis en prison.
The accused was smiling because the judges had not put him in prison.
The verbs of motion that take être instead of avoir as the auxiliary verb in the passé composé. Use the imparfait of être to form the plu-que- parfait of such verbs and make the past participle agree with the subject.
Les avocats ne savaient pas que vous étiez déjà partie.
the lawyers didn’t know that you had already left
On a découvert que les victimes étaient mortes à la suite de leurs blessures.
They discovered that the victims had died of their injuries.
Use the imparfait of être as the auxiliary for reflexive and reciprocal verbs. Make agreement whenever you would do so for the passé composé
Avant le dîner, le président et sa femme s´étaient levés pour recevoir les invités.
In all other cases as well, agreement of past participles in the plus-que-parfait follows the same rules in the passé composé
La police a trouvé les armes qu’il avait cachées.
the police found the weapons that he had hidden
Le président a signé la loi que le congrès avait approuvée.
The president signed the law that the congress had passed.
Use the plus-que-parfait to emphasize that something happened in the past before something else happened. use the passé composé to describe completed events in the more recent past and the imparfait to describe ongoing or habitual actions in the more recent past.
action in remote past....connected action in recent past
L’activiste n’avait pas fini de parler quand vous avez coupé le micro
the activist hadn’t finished talking when you cut off the mic.
ongoing action in recent past... action in remote past.
Il y a avait des drapeaux partout parce que le président était arrivé la veille.
There were flags everywhere because the president had arrived the day before.
The plus-que-parfait is also used after the word si to mean if only...(something else had taken place). it expresses regret.
Si j’avais su que tu avais un plan
If only I had known you had a map
Si seulement il n’était pas arrivé en retard.
If only he hadn arrived late
To say that something had just happened in the past, use a form of venir in the imparfait + de+ the infinitive of the verb that describes the action
Je venais de raccrocher quand le téléphone a sonné de nouveau.
I had just hung up when the phone rang again.
Le président venait de signer l’accord quand on a entendu l’explosion.
the president had jsut signed the treaty when we heard the explosion.

Happy Anthropology day!

If you’re studying anthropology, or just love the field itself, feel free to share why you love it so much! I, personally, would like to be a Linguistic Anthropologist. Anthropology is one those of fields that I didn’t think I would like but aboslutely adore now that I took some of the classes.
