Unleash Your Agile Potential: Getting Certified as a Scrum Master
Tumblr media
“By adopting an agile mindset and providing improved engagement, collaboration, transparency, and adaptability via Scrum’s values, roles, events, and artifacts, the results were excellent.” – Scott M. Graffius, Agile Transformation: A Brief Story of How an Entertainment Company Developed New Capabilities and Unlocked Business Agility o Thrive in an Era of Rapid Change
What is Agile Methodology?
Agile methodology is a compilation of processes, techniques and tools that are used to manage a project or develop software. It helps to simplify the complex procedure by breaking it into simple phases. Agile has been a revolutionary change for organizations that struggled with rigid methods for producing a product as it enables continuous change. There are many frameworks that have been launched which help the organizations with implementation of Agile principles. They are-
·       Scrum
·       SAFe
·       Kanban
·       Hybrid
·       Lean
·       Extreme Programming
·       Crystal
·       DevOps
·       Large-Scale Scrum
·       Feature-Driven Development
·       Agile Modeling
Tumblr media
What is Scrum?
Scrum is a process framework that works on Agile principles to address complex adaptive problems. It is suitable for small teams that work in small iterative phases. There are some events that are performed by the team at frequent intervals-
·       Sprint
·       Sprint Planning
·       Daily Scrum
·       Sprint Review
·       Sprint retrospective
·       Backlog refinement
·       Cancelling a sprint
Roles in a Scrum Team
Scrum teams are small with 10 or less members with different skills and responsibilities. The team is assigned three major roles-
·       Product Owner who is a representative of the consumers or stakeholders.
·       Scrum Master who is responsible for efficient implementation of Agile in the project.
·       Developers consist of differently skilled professionals who execute the work.
Who is a Scrum Master?
Scrum Master is a trained professional who is accountable to establish Scrum and Agile values. The role is not similar to that of a team lead or project manager, it is more like a servant-leader. A Scrum Master helps its team to adopt and use the techniques properly.
Responsibilities of a Scrum Master
It is one of the essential roles that lead to success of a project. The responsibilities of a Scrum Master are-
·       Ensuring Scrum and Agile values are implemented properly
·       Coaching and guiding the team members in cross-functionality
·       Helping the product owner with the product backlog
·       Communicating within the team
·       Collaborating with other teams
·       Organizing and leading Scrum events
·       Conveying the product backlog items to the team members clearly
·       Removing blockages from the process
·       Resolving issues
Training Certification for Scrum Master
Scrum is one of the widely used frameworks especially in small organizations. The need of a Scrum Master in every Scrum team has created an opportunity for professionals. There are different courses available that can enhance your career by teaching some skills necessary for the role. There is a number of Training Certification for Scrum master available online. The validations of the certificates vary. The duration of every course is different.
Title Description
1.       Skills required to be a Scrum Master
There are no pre-requisites for being a Scrum Master but there are a few skills that are advisable for them. The skills are-
·       Leadership skills
·       Communication skills
·       Collaborative skills
·       In-depth knowledge of Agile and Scrum
·       Skills to resolve issues
·       Ability to organize
·       Technical skills
·       Time management skills
·       Skills to guide
·       Problem solving skills
2.       Mention some Training Certification for Scrum Masters
The job role of a Scrum Master is highly in demand nowadays. Although it is not necessary to get certified for being a Scrum Master but organizations hire someone can give assurance of the skills. The Training Certification for Scrum Masters are-
·       Certified Scrum Master
·       Certified Scrum Product Owner
·       Professional Scrum Master
·       Advanced Certified Scrum Master
·       Professional Scrum Product Owner
·       SAFe Scrum Master Certification
·       PMI-Agile Certified Practitioner
3.       Is Scrum Master Course necessary to implement Agile values?
No, Scrum Master Course or Certification is not mandatory to implement Agile in the organization. If you have the knowledge and background in tech to fulfill the job roles then you can be the choice of the recruiter. However, hiring managers and recruiters like to play it safe and vouch for certifications. The skill sets you have mentioned in your resume get a validation when you have certificates. Certified SAFe Program Consultants
Certified SAFe Program Consultants (SPCs) are change specialists who join their specialized information on SAFe with an inborn inspiration to work on the organization's product and frameworks advancement measures. They assume a basic part in effectively carrying out SAFe. SPCs come from various inward or outer jobs, including business and innovation pioneers, portfolio/program/project directors, measure drives, draftsmen, examiners, and advisors. As laid out in the Implementation Roadmap series, changing the advancement practices and conduct of an undertaking is a huge test.  Such an alliance requires: Leaders who can set the vision, show the way, and eliminate obstructions Practitioners, directors, and change specialists who can execute explicit cycle changes Sufficient hierarchical believability to be viewed appropriately The ability expected to make quick, savvy choices In endeavors new to SAFe, a significant number of these qualities rest with experienced and prepared SPCs.   Reaching the tipping point – They communicate the business need, urgency, and vision for change. Training executives, managers, and leaders – They socialize the new concepts and provide orientation and overview training. SPCs teach Leading SAFe and facilitate modules of the Leading in the Digital Age series for leaders, managers, and stakeholders. Establishing a Lean-Agile Center of Excellence (LACE) – SPCs assist the LACE with building and executing the transformation backlog. Identifying Value Streams and Agile Release Trains (ARTs) – Working with stakeholders to understand the flow of value, SPCs facilitate the identification of Operational Value Streams, Development Value Streams and ARTs to find those that are the most opportunistic for launch. Creating the implementation plan – SPCs participate in creating a plan for the rollout, communicate upcoming changes, and establish metrics. Preparing for the ART launch – SPCs help the LACE plan and prepare for the ART launch. They coach leadership and help facilitate the creation of new Agile Teams. They also train or source training of executives, leaders, Agile teams, and specialty roles—such as Product Owner, Product Manager, Scrum Master, and Release Train Engineer (RTE). They also assess and evolve launch and backlog readiness. Training teams and launching the ART – SPCs often directly plan and execute ‘quickstart’ or other rollout strategies. They train or source training for teams and participate in initial, critical events like Program Increment (PI) Planning and Inspect and Adapt (I&A). SPCs help establish the ART launch date and calendar for ART and Team events. Coaching ART execution – The SPCs coach leaders and stakeholders to build and maintain the Vision, Roadmap, and Program Backlogs. They coach teams, Product Owners, Product Managers, Architects, and RTEs. They guide the shift from project-to-product with a focus on Customer Centricity and Design Thinking as part of Agile Product Delivery. They also participate in Scrum of Scrums and System Demo, facilitate I&A and follow-up on improvement items. Finally, they help teams establish a DevOps culture and mindset, the Continuous Delivery Pipeline, infrastructure, and associated Agile technical practices. Launching more ARTs and value streams – SPCs work to enable new change agents to increase organizational capacity to support new value streams, start more ARTs, and expand the reach of the LACE. They communicate progress and highlight early accomplishments. Extending to the portfolio – Once Lean-Agile practices gain momentum, SPCs can socialize and drive those practices to the portfolio level, including Portfolio Vision, Lean Budgets using Participatory Budgeting and Guardrails, Lean Portfolio Management, leaner approaches to CapEx and OpEx, and Agile Contracts. They also communicate the value of Strategic Themes. (Note that some organizations may opt to implement LPM much earlier in their SAFe transformation.) Accelerating – An enterprise’s SAFe journey doesn’t end with the launching of trains and the adoption of Lean Portfolio Management. SPCs have expert mastery of the seven competencies of the Lean Enterprise and how they contribute to achieving Business Agility. They are proficient in using the assessments described in Measure & Grow to help organizations understand where they are on the path to business agility. SPCs can also help develop the action plans that the enterprise to grow in each of the 21 dimensions across the SAFe competencies.           American technology consulting: ATC is a preeminent training provider, supporting professionals across industries to develop new expertise and skills for recognition and growth in the corporate world.  ATC offers a wide range of services in training, learning, and development in technology and management fields developed to deliver high-value training through innovative and practical approaches. SAFe Program Consultant in Agile Methodology
Tumblr media
Along with agile implementation, SAFe is also becoming more popular and is adopted by various organizations small, medium, and large. SAFe is becoming a leader of frameworks in an organization as it helps them in scaling agile practices and principles. As SAFe training is required for the entire team, even its very basic configuration requires a large investment of cost and time. With available cost and time implementing SAFe in an organization is a challenging task. Agile also includes collaboration, delivery, and alignment among different teams including that SAFe provides flexibility and evolving frameworks that meet incremental milestones. This critical role of implementing SAFe all over the teams and organization is carried out by the persons who can handle pressure and a lot of responsibilities at once. The individuals handling this immense pressure and responsibilities are called SAFe Program Consultants (SPC).
They are the agents who combine various roles and their technical knowledge with an essential motivation for improving an organization's software and development process systems. SPCs can be anyone who’s already working in agile in different roles such as business or technology leaders, product managers, program managers, analysts, consultants, process leads, or architects.
Tumblr media
There are many faces an SPC has to be responsible for some of them are
·       Mentor
·       Coach
·       Guide
·       Trainer
·       Facilitator
Even though these roles may seem similar to anyone but they all have very different and divert responsibilities than the other. Every role mentioned above is important in the implementation of SAFe.
In performing the role sufficiently and satisfactorily basic coalition is required which is as
·       Leaders who can show way, set vision, and remove obstacles
·       A practitioner, change agent, or manager who can implement specific process change
·       Taking seriously the organizational credibility
·       Experts are required to take intelligent and quicker decisions
When we observe in deeper the SPC have lots of responsibilities as they play various roles in the implementation of SAFe in an organization some of the most important responsibilities they carry are;
·       They help in communicating the vision for change, business needs, and urgencies
·       They help managers, leaders, and stakeholders with the socialization of new concepts, overview training, and orientation. They lead the organization in creating digital age leaders and facilitation modules.
·       They play an important role in establishing metrics, rollout plans, and communicating further changes
·       SPC helps in building and executing the transformation backlog for assisting lean-agile center of excellence
·       SPCs identify the development and operational value streams and Arts which are most opportunistic for launching that helps stakeholders to understand the flow of value.
·       They help in the preparation, access, and evolution of ART launch and backlog readiness. They train the role of agile teams, product owners, scrum masters, release train engineers, and product managers.
·       SPCs help trains the agile teams, at initial but critical levels like inspection and adaptation, program increment planning, and establishing dates for ART launch, events, and calendars for ARTs.
·       To maintain roadmaps, vision, and product backlog SPC’s also train leaders and executives. They guide shifting from project to product including customer centricity, design thinking, scrum of scrums, system demos, and follow-up of improving items.
·       They help teams in developing a DevOps culture and mindset, establishing agile practices, infrastructure, and a continuous delivery pipeline.
·       Further, they also guide the implementation of agile practices at a portfolio level and communicate strategic theme value.
·       For supporting the new organizational value stream, expand LACE reach, and start ARTs SPC involve more new agile change agent.
·       SPCs use their mastery of seven competencies and execution of business agility for organizational growth making the organization aware of where they stand and developing an action plan for achieving agility in all 21 dimensions across SAFe competencies.
But for SAFe organizations, many have doubts about how many SPCs should they have. The answer to this confusion is not guided in the SAFe. But not anyone alone can achieve all the required for implementation. This shows us that many of the SPCs are required across emerging lean-agile businesses. In almost approximately 3-5 per 100 practitioners driving and sustaining the implementation is required.
With help of SPC’s certification lean agile individuals are trained to acquire these skills and tools for executing their responsibilities. Teach and coach others to implement and support the agile change.
