I spent five years coming up with unique ways to photograph the same group of plushies to help tell a story.

You don't need AI to help you be creative, you're just being lazy and want brain chemicals without doing any of the work or respecting the people who put time and effort into it.

#if i could develop a compelling narrative with a Pikachu plush and an Eevee i found at a Goodwill #you can do better than an algorithm #being creative is difficult but that's part of what makes it rewarding!#don't let the slop machine have your imagination algorithms have already taken so much from you #full disclosure i actually DO use Perplexity as an add on to Google and sometimes i have it help me with code #i do think having a computer assist you with creating automation can be good!#there ARE good AI tools - at least on paper #there's the whole power consumption thing which is...not great and i do admit i might not be blameless for that reason #but as an alternative for daydreaming?#GO MAKE YOUR OWN #it's okay if it's derivative sometimes!#you're not an impostor unless you're actively stealing from creatives #and you'll never guess what image generation does #it's not even generation actually it's just rehashing #anyways DeviantArt is essentially unusable now #i want real creativity please no more LLM trash thank you #artists deserve more respect #and i hope Microsoft is punted directly into the Sun

Thinking about this one guy justifying ai art with something like “go ahead and make your art but the bar is raised now” and it’s like buddy the bar is lowered now thanks to you

#‘more quality art means you artists have higher expectations now oooh why not give up and convert to the slop machine’ buddy you are showing #that some people can’t even bother to make effort that surface level quality means nothing people who care are infinitely more impressive #like if you ever feel bad about your art know that the fact that you even bothered to pick up a pencil makes you infinitely better and more #respectable than the people with a lack of critical thinking skills like idgaf if your microwave meal looks good because it stole fromactual #good art your stuff means nothing other than a churned out piece of content to consume and throw away and you can’t even call yourself Ann #artist because you didn’t do anything than write adjectives and hit the random image generator built off actual artists work #and since all ai art can only mimic actual art there is never going to be anything ai does that an artist cant to better #so like the bar literally can’t be raised because it’s already been done before #thinking about since commissioning just produces better art and there straight up isn’t any thought or meaning to make ai art worthwhile #as it only creates amalgamations of what it thinks looks good ai art on a fundamental level can only be used for meaningless slop #and maybe tools for artists but there are other non-generative alternatives with less moral problems sooooooo #everyone including the White House posting ai ghibli stuff not knowing r caring that they were the villain in all their stories the irony #tempestmothtalk #sorry sorry generative ai just makes me see red

i think also a huge part of why artists majorly refuse machine-learning (bc that’s what it is, i refuse to call it ai bc it’s inaccurate and gives tech bros too much credit) is that the people currently championing and developing those tools actively want it to replace artists. They loudly and proudly hate the arts and want every creative professional put out of work. They want every creative HOBBYIST to give up. I have seen machine-learning art generators call us artoids (like ‘femoids’ incels or unhealthily online misogynists use to refer to women. To give you the idea of the kind of hate-fueled superiority we’re dealing with) and circle-jerk to the idea of art no longer being a career and no one being able to ask for commissions anymore.

Machine-learning tools are currently a symbol of people who see creativity and art as an enemy, a boogeyman to be slain. They are designed accordingly - stealing human work to create the data, designing it so that people can generate ‘sketches’ or ‘doodles’ to deceive the layman that it was hand-drawn, using real-world likenesses without consent, etc. When tech bros get tired of weaponizing machine-learning because they think we need to get ‘real jobs’ or that furry porn artists charge too much for comms and need to be stopped, it will probably be a lot easier for artists to embrace it as it’ll be a lot easier to develop ethical tools. On top of making development easier, it could become a great tool to make the visual arts accessible for people that have disabilities affecting drawing ability. It could be a wonderful technology.

But as it stands we’re not there yet.

It's kind of hilarious that they think machine learning models will be the the end of art though. As if art hasnt been a core human function from prehistoric age and as if it hasnt survived hundreds of purges, demonizations, and attempts to erase certain styles and movements and people. A neat image diffusion tool that generates a redlined undersketch of any illustrated girl. Tested with one of my OCs as illustrated by @fipindustries.

It does a good job capturing the bottom-heavy figure of the character, and breaks down the anatomy satisfyingly.

The entire argument online about ai technology sucks because people only ever talk about LLM's that function by mashing a bunch of random shit together at random based on text prompts. If people were making actual tools to be used for specific purposes in order to help people do certain things, that would be one thing, because tools are actually useful. But instead we have people arguing about whether or not its morally correct to use chatgpt to cheat on your homework or justify firing your employees to avoid paying wages. Or people thinking the LLM's are sentient
