coworker today casually mentioned âthe ai text message summaryâ and because i have been living in a blissful world where i havenât updated to ios 18, i laughed! i thought she was joking! what do you MEAN a summary of a text message. what kind of texts are you people sending that need to be summarized đ we have strayed so far from god
#ai generated texts i guess????#every time i get a âchat gpt organizedâ email from a students itâs so pointlessly long#20 unnecessary bullet points#like in that instance it clearly expects me to also be using ai i guess to summarize it back to a normal email#what a make work project#anti ai

OpenAI's "o1" reasoning model is incapable by design of saying anything without thinking it over first.
Which results in cute (?) moments like this, where â in response to the single word "Thanks!" â it says the same "any more questions" sound byte that all its siblings say, but only after five seconds of careful, verbose inner deliberation
(N. B. the user only gets to see a summary o1's chain of thought, not the thing itself. The blockquote under "Thought for 5 seconds" is this summary; the original chain of thought was presumably somewhat longer, given that o1 can write ~30 words per second)
#ai tag#btw âAddressing the invariance of divergencesâ relates to the topic of the conversation before this#and looks like a mistake on the part of their very-janky summarizer model

search engines are hot garbage now, exhibit 455:
So I was wondering about the effects of testosterone on ear wax. (for unnecessary context, i recently started hrt)
I know that the HRT they're talking about is cis women taking estrogen to offset the reduced production during menopause. It's meant to This result here implies that maintaining your estrogen levels would cause itchy ears, which doesn't make a lot of sense.
The "..." is a bit suspicious, isnt it? Let's see the whole context.
Well would you look at that, it's the exact opposite. So where does the second part come from?
Outstanding, truly.
It combines two unrelated parts of the article, which said essentially the same thing, into saying the opposite.
And here's a little visual:
Green are the used sentences, red is removed vital context, and grey is the stuff in between that gets ignored. (There's more above and below this part, it makes up about half of the article.)
And this is why you shouldn't trust any fucking AI summaries.
also remember that i was looking for the effects of testosterone lol
#ramble#this was duckduckgo btw#fuck ai#anti ai#long post#enshittification#its not even hallucinating in this case. it just CANNOT UNDERSTAND THE TEXT!!#if you ask ai anything. even to summarize. i will literally not talk to you. because neither you or i know if what youre saying is true.#i still have no idea how it got to the summary that krabby evolves from magikarp. literally how.

Do you have any advice on how to learn to read faster?
not faster necessarily, no, pretty much all of my advice is abt learning to read slower sry. since most my problems are abt memory & fatigue & hitting yr cognitive threshold for the maximum amount of info you can absorb in one sitting, things like rereading & taking notes in the margins are abt forcing myself to go slower so i rly digest what it is im trying to read.
an app like instapaper, which can save articles in dark mode/large font/preferred line spacing reduces some of the difficulty for me, which i guess leads to being faster? and having the audiobook play at the same time as im reading can help too. covering up yr page (i usually use a bookmark) except to the line that yr reading is helpful to reduce the fatigue of yr eye jumping ahead on the page. i get pretty picky about the books i buy bc i try to avoid any editions where the text is too small & cramped on the page. if there is a hard passage im rly not getting, i read it out loud to myself. i use my pencil to follow along and point to the words im reading. i give myself lots of breaks so i donât burn out. when its rly important (like having to read complex articles for my grad classes) i would try to read in bed around 10-11am bc that tended to be my best time cognitive energy-wise. difficult to do if u have other things that are higher priority, but sometimes you gotta be gentle with yourself and go âi had to prioritize [x thing] so i have less energy to spend on reading for fun, and itâs okay that im gonna be slowerâ
oh also! maybe look @ yr toolkit of pre-reading strategies. before i sit down to read something closely, i skim the abstract, the author bio, the section headings/chapter titles, the bibliography, the end notes, the index. i highlight anything that might be interesting or relevant. this helps give me an overall sense/shape of what im going to be reading. it gives me âanchor pointsâ to tether information to. if you feel like yr rly wading thru mud, maybe u need to practice yr pre-reading strategies (like exercising a muscle, it gets easier to more consistently u do it)
also, you may just be reading something thatâs rly hard! we had to read a lot of Elfriede Jelinek and like â sheâs difficult to read, and deliberately so as a philosophical/stylistic choice. also, if yr reading a text in translation, i find that browsing a few translations beforehand or asking around which translations my friends like makes such a huge difference. a lot of public domain translations (like the cheap dover thrift editions you can get secondhand rly easily) are ASS when it comes to readability. like i had my Lattimore translation of Oedipus beside one of the public domain ones and it was like night and day in terms of readability.
lastly, idk yr reasons for wanting to read faster, but if itâs something like yr workload for a university course â i would usually email my profs to introduce myself in the summer before term or over winter break. iâd say iâm looking forward to their course & ask politely if they had their reading list on hand bc being able to read in advance made a big difference with how i could keep up with the workload during term time. and also importantly: if i was truly struggling, i would ask myself âis this a normal human being amount of reading to assign? or does this prof have expectations that are not grounded in reality?â bc sometimes the latter is v much the case! and you should just release yrself from putting undue pressure on yrself. try yr best but donât beat yrself up for something that is an impossible task.
#future literature tag#most stuff online abt reading faster is by hucksters and charlatans#especially ai stuff#like proquest try to force an ai feature that summarizes articles?#my brother in christ that is what the abstract is for

Genuinely one of the most insulting things that could pop up when I open my fic to work on it.
#I know I know there are alternatives to word but I've been using it for my whole life and I'm happy to pay for the familiarity#But this is just... yuck!#ALSO as a curiosity I tried to check it out and its generic prompts are all about summarizing#which I'm not sure how that will help#And when you ask for a summary of a particularly long document it doesn't even read past the first 20 pages or so#useless honestly#anti ai

#I put my book of hours notes into notion and the AI is good at some things (summarizing and finding action items) and bad and hallucinates#when it comes to most other things. before this it made a very basic stupid math mistake#it said that an item with a total of 10 as the sum of all its principles was more powerful than an item with 12 as the sum. lol. brother???#and Yeah I know that's not how the game works. shhh I didn't bother explaining it to the AI. I let it work things out on its own time and#it still fucked up. VERY BASIC MATH.

A Character Analysis Post/Character Development Chronicle...?
In any case I wanna talk about Pearl, so here (Part 1 because I yap waaaay too much)
This has long been bouncing around my head, but I decided to finally sit down and type it out and ramble on about this - a look at Pearl as character, how she develops and blossoms into her own throughout the Jumi arc!
I've already written similar posts about Elazul and Blackpearl, and now writing this about Pearl, there is a pattern among the Jumi characters that things don't always seem what they appear to be at first glance. Prickly, troublemaker Elazul is actually someone who is easily concerned for others' wellbeing, and Blackpearl's initial insistence to go alone becomes a weakness for her as events unfold.
The same holds true for Pearl -

We're first introduced to Pearl in The Lost Princess - the scenario sets her up as a damsel in distress right off the bat, and both her description and character design adds to the image of quiet, shy maiden in need of protection.

When we finally do meet her in person, that image of her seems to definitely be true, meekly apologizing when Elazul starts scolding her.

And who can forget her little blush?
All together, Pearl's demeanor and character design gives off the image of someone you'd want to rescue and who does need rescuing - but that's not all she is, and if you take careful note of her appearances, the seemingly shy little Pearl is actually quite the determined individual.
When we meet her at the Tower of Leires to properly kickstart the Jumi Arc with The Looking Glass Tower quest, Pearl is wandering without Elazul again. However, this quest gives the first indication that Pearl's tendency to "think about things" isn't just to give her the charm of a ditzy airhead.
After an early appearance from Blackpearl and the scuffle with the guardian of the Room of Fate, Elazul arrives to take Pearl, and this is when Pearl shows the matter that had truly been bothering her -

She's not just someone who "gets lost in thought," - she's desperate to know more about who she is. She's outright begging Elazul here to let her stay on the chance she can finally grasp something about herself -
And that brings a degree of depth and seriousness to Pearl's character, from a seemingly ditzy princess to someone who's trying to find her identity in a world where she is so very vulnerable.
And Pearl KNOWS she's vulnerable, as can be seen in the post-Jewel Beast fight in this quest:

It's worth noting at this point in their relationship as a Knight and Guardian, Elazul and Pearl do have an element of toxic dependency in their partnership - Elazul is desperate not to lose Pearl, that would make him a failure of a knight. Pearl clings onto Elazul too, because she's actually well aware that without him, she was as good as dead, and as revealed here, she even had trepidations about Elazul finding other Jumi because she was so scared of being left behind and alone.
Taking into consideration the fact that Pearl pretty much was thrusted into existence with no real identity or memories of her own, she can't help but depend on Elazul - he was the one to find her and even gave her a name, so she has very real fears that if he abandons her, she has no one left. She doesn't quite have the reassurance yet that Elazul DOES genuinely care for her, since at this point, he's so focused on not losing her as a guardian he ends up being a little harsh.
But character growth does creep in over the course of events, and when we next meet Pearl in the lead-up to The Lucky Clover, she shows no sign of meekness to Elazul at all.
In fact she points out he was being unfair to her by making her stay put.

I forgot to mention this in my Elazul post, but he also shows one of his most tender moments once Pearl is out of earshot here (since she crashes at our place for a while):

I think The Looking Glass Tower is a turning point for both characters, and all because of our very nosey main protagonist lol. No, really - I think a major factor for these two Jumi learning to open up is our protagonist's presence, giving the two a trusted figure to confide in.
With Shiloh/Serafina now present in the mix, both Pearl and Elazul can begin to move away from their initial highly dependent behavior on each other. So here, we can see not only does Pearl stand up to Elazul's suggestion, we see here Elazul does truly mean well for Pearl and wanted her to have a stable life - he doesn't want her to just be shackled to him.
In any case, going back to Pearl - the quest after this, Cosmo, showcases for me just how far Pearl has gone since The Lost Princess:

For one thing, Pearl is speaking quite clearly with no hint of that meekness or hesitation, even face to face with Sandra.
And the crowning moment of all this is when Sandra tries to claim these two Jumis' cores, Pearl stands up for herself with this statement:

I find it very important that when Pearl acknowledged she still could not fulfill her guardian's duty to heal, she chose to fight instead, if that was what could help at that moment. And hey, it worked, Sandra was definitely spooked when Blackpearl popped up.
This situation does lead to some trouble with the fact that Blackpearl then refused to let Pearl go back with Elazul - but by now the seeds of character has bloomed within Pearl, and she is ready to take her own wishes and desires eve against her original persona, as can be seen in the next quest.
Since this post is already long and I might be hitting the image limit, I'll have to break this up into multiple posts whoops. So more yapping ahead!
#legend of mana#legend of mana pearl#it took me an hour and a half to write this and most of the 2nd post#it takes that much time compiling all the photos and hopefully writing this in a way that makes sense#and i still go back to edit and realize i needed a 3rd post lol#but I'll do it and keep doing it because i love these characters sooo much#also fuck ai i am going to keep writing and observing by myself#to feed LOM into some soulless program to summarize things should be a crime anyway#crapGPT has NOTHING on my brain which thinks about LOM sooo much#of course i could always be wrong but so can those types of ai so i might as well be wrong and learn from it

hey microsoft what the fuck is copilot?
microsoft why are you adding a generative AI to your programs with no option to disable it??
microsoft why the fuck would you include a "draft with copilot" button that appears every single time you start a new line???
#listen. LISTEN. i'm not entirely against a 'summarize this text for me' button#i think it can be helpful for people with adhd or other memory related problems#but you HAVE to give me the option to GET IT OFF MY SCREEN#i don't want to use your fucking AI when I'm trying to write#the button that pops up is distracting on top of being annoying#microsoft if you're trying to get me to go back to google docs it's working#alisha babbles
