Le chanteur s'est éteint le 14 mars 2009.

A First Winning Attempt

Technically the very first musical " Made in France "

For the first time, France will see the birth of its first REAL musical show which will be neither an opera nor an operetta

But for now this entertainment revolution exists only in the form of a simple disc without great ambition ...

To capture the audience's attention, several pop stars of the time were invited to lend their voices :

Alain Bashung as Robespierre

Antoine as Napoleon

And the Charlots as the priests

Also noteworthy is the minor participation of Daniel Balavoine, then unknown, in the chorus; he would have to wait for Another Musical to shine as a soloist )

The story follow the impossible love story of Charles Gauthier, a poor boy from the shallows , for Isabelle de Montmorency, daughter of aristocrats during the terrible events of 1789

( This plot will be plagiarized without any embarrassment by " 1789 les Amants de la Bastille" many years later , I'll probably talk about it one day so stay tuned :)

The album was a surprise succes

Such a success that a stage adaptation was mounted and then performed at the Palais des Sports with the presence of Alain Bashung still in his role as Robespierre, then at the Théâtre Mogador the following year with a new troupe and without the stars of the record

Despite its success , the show was not recorded

All that remains is the original album and some archive video :

Today, this show has fallen into oblivion, with no attempt at reviving it until 2024

To celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the original album, Pierre-Ammar Chala will revive it at the Théâtre du Treizième Art

Novice, Alain Bashung (1989)

Blinkered by streaming services, my listening to Alain Bashung’s discographie skips forward nearly a decade from 1980’s Pizza (bypassing 1982’s crucial – or so I hear – Gainsbourg-influenced Play Blessures) to 1989’s Novice, and I’m baffled by the leap, though baffled in a very, very good way. Not only did Bashung go from proficient but not particularly distinct new wave provocateur to a daring proponent of ‘nouvelle chanson’ but Novice also featured contributions from a staggering line-up of the era’s mightiest rock musicians (Colin Newman (Wire), Blixa Bargeld (Einstürzende Neubauten, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds), Phil Manzanera (Roxy Music) and Dave Ball (Soft Cell), to name a few). On several levels, from several angles and over several listens, Novice is tremendous.
