worrying about seeing somebody he knows doesn't make much sense. if he sees anybody he knows, they're very likely to ignore him given what that means. he wanders deeper into the club, already feeling a little hot. all he can see are bodies pressing together and it makes him long a little for it himself, finally able to have a chance at it. swallowing thickly, alec unbuttons his shirt, tugging it off so he can wrap it around his waist, white vest top almost glowing in the low light. he catches somebody's eye, a little breathless as he stares at them, unable to move.

one night, he's fifty years old, going to bed wishing that he could've met his husband sooner. the next he's looking in the mirror and staring at his younger self and his mother is calling him and reminding him to hurry up because he's starting at his new college today. new college? he can't recall ever going to different colleges. just the one, which hadn't been the greatest experience from what he can recall. "coming!" he calls out, bounding down the stairs to find his entire family…thirty something years younger. he looks down at the newspaper and spots that particular teacher that had made his life a misery, and stan is beaming at him brightly, 'got that motherfucker.' marshall smiles too, but his confusion is written within his eyes. stan doesn't comment though, assuming it was just a lot for him to handle. then he's being handed a plate of toast, and he's taking one slice and staring at his mother, 'your dad's going to take you, don't worry. we've got you, babe.' she reassures, kissing his cheek.
once he's actually at the college, he's reassuring his dad that he has got it, that he'll find his way around and despite his apparent wariness, he continues to show that faith in his eldest son that marshall hadn't ever really felt as though he deserved. walking into the building he's directed to, he grabs his timetable and a few resources from the reception, before he's wandering towards his first classroom. he's nervous, entirely confused but too curious not to see this through. that's when he sees him and his eyes are practically bulging right out of his head. nobody's sitting next to him yet, and he doesn't see any sign of a seating plan -- so he sits. "uh, hello. i'm -- marshall...it's my first day." nailed that. / @tkachukmatthew

The first clash between Andrew and Dave, and Dave definitely deserved it. I love the little exchanges where Andrew uses a “big” word and the others don’t understand him. It’s a nice character detail that I really appreciate for it’s lack of classism: one of the smartest, calmest people at the station is the one who’s the ex-miner. A rare devious moment from Charles at the end, too, knowing full well that Dave didn’t intend to give any money to charity, but holding him to the lie.
MONROE: This is a police station, not a flea market, Quinnan. QUINNAN: Yes, sir. MONROE: And you can vouch for the probity of these, can you? QUINNAN: …How’s that, sir? MONROE: Are they bent, Quinnan?

LEGEND OF NEVETSECNUAC - THE ASSASSINS - SECTION 8
LEGEND OF NEVETSECNUAC – THE ASSASSINS – SECTION 8 Positioned near the brazier, cozy warm and with his wounds well-tended, Brandt’s face by degrees returned to a normal color. Though conscious now Brandt, opting to play it safe, kept his eyes shut for a while longer and shallowly inhaled the familiar smell wafting to his nostrils. He stealthily noted the fact that his upper (garb) garments had…

the thing with marshall and his family was that they were always so accommodating and understanding. they had all played their parts in making him feel so comfortable and loved with them. alec and marshall have both grown together as a couple and individually and, he can honestly say, he doesn't think they would be together right now if they hadn't gone through so much in their relationship. alec snorts and leans into his husband's side. "i'd be the most miserable man in the world without you." it was hard to imagine a world without marshall in now that he was such an important part of his life, but he can say for certain that he would be awful to spend any time around. life would just cease to have meaning. once they're in the kitchen, alec hides a yawn behind his hand and leans against the counter, watching his husband with a soft gaze. "i think we should either watch home alone or the santa clause. or we could watch it's a wonderful life."
marshall appreciated that alec had grown up in an entirely contrasting environment to what he had, and whilst he knows there's been points that he'd been immature, he's grown alongside his husband and now tries his utmost to read between the lines effectively, as opposed to always searching for the most cynical, deranged answer to everything. he smiles then, eagerly leading him towards the kitchen. "you'd still be your wonderful, beautiful, adorable self. just totally distraught and miserable, too." the words fall alongside a snort, but he means the words. knows alec loves him the same way that he loves alec. it's incredible, to be loved and known the way that he was by alec. it was equal parts terrifying and life-fulfilling. there's nothing he wouldn't do for the other man, but he knows the same can be said in reverse, too. he turns on the coffee maker and prepares it, leaning back against the countertop. "what's the first christmas movie we've got to watch? remembering it's gonna' kick start our christmas celebrations so choose wisely..."

reminder of some things we learn from the broadchurch short stories
- daisy is (or at least was) a taylor swift fan
- alec's suit was so destroyed after finding pippa that he couldn't wear it anymore :(
- claire was like... forced to leave wales??? and was involved with this guy called gethin who was selling bad drugs to people and she saved some random teenagers from his drugs???????? its a whole thing. gethin had sisters who beat up claires grandmother because of the whole drug thing
- tess was cheating on alec the day he found pippa (in a car at the side of the road)
- tess like really did not like alec at all during the sandbrook case and he was kinda a shitty husband by the sounds of it
- jocelyn was friends with jack marshall and I HATE IT ITS SO OUT OF CHARACTER TO ME
- sharon has a partner(?) called darroll (that looks spelt wrong but that's how I spelt it when I wrote this list 11 months ago)
- there's apparently a wrong way to eat asparagus. idk
- claire is on tesco mobile
- on a similar note there is a big tesco near broadchurch. and alec has been to it
- and claire knew about alecs condition cos he had one of his episodes in front of her in big tesco (he was off his meds)
- when alec got home from finding pippa he saw daisy sleeping and panicked because he thought she wasn't breathing and it's so sad. it is actually so sad he shakes her awake in a panic and scares her and then has a mini breakdown
- like he's even more traumatised than we thought guys
- beth was getting mental health support during the trial (kinda) (patricia)
- maggie is kinda a badass she does a whole drug bust
- maggie also keeps a picture of danny on her desk :(
- ellie tried a different rank before doing the traffic thing but she couldn't do it . she did stop a guy killing his wife tho !! Me 11 months ago wrote "slay queen ig" next to this
- erin kelly hates lesbians (no not really I just wish she would've written about maggie and jocelyn) (instead of jack marshall)
- again . alec hardy is so fucking sad
this is all canon from the broadchurch s2 short stories by erin kelly & chris chibnall

Ok another appreciation post
Ok I am making my way through filmographies of some of my favorite actors and I've finally made it around to walking Broadchurch staring David Tennant and I gotta talk about it. I will be adding a spoiler warning.

Ok here's another super late night appreciation post/rant about a stunning tv show that left me thinking. I love it when shows do that! And I will say that one thing that I love is that I could not figure out the who dun it which I'm pretty good at doing when watching a detective tv show and every season I couldn't figure it out. Each season I was left speechless.
The first season, I was crushed when Jack Marshall passed and I really thought Nigel had done it. And my jaw was on the floor when it was revealed that it was Joe Miller who killed Danny. I also don't know if I love the idea of all of the main detectives in these detective shows having a physical or mental problem (Sherlock and his cocaine addiction, Bull and his heart conditions/heart attacks, not to mention all of the detectives that get shot or injured and all of the distrust and such. it just seems like an overdone trope in my opinion) but I do think they did a good job with it on this show. It was handled differently that you see on others and that's what made it work.
The second was just a whirlwind of emotions. I was livid when Joe was found innocent. He should not have gotten off and even with circumstantial evidence, I really thought they would have found new evidence that would have gotten him convicted but they never did. Now this may be a hot take but I lowkey hated Beth in this season. There are multiple cases of spouses not knowing that anything is amiss in their household. And because Ellie was working on the case, I can see why she didn't believe it was Joe. Not wanting to believe he would be so stupid as to commit a murder. I believe Beth was just spiraling and needed to take a deep breath. I was very happy when Alec survived his surgery and solved Sandbrook. He deserved the wins and I loved that for him.
Season three hit very close to home for me so many times I had to watch a couple episodes then walk away and leave it alone for a little while then coming back. I will say, this is the one season that shocked me the most in terms of who did it. I really thought it was Jim or Ian, I did not expect it to be Leo and Michael and the different layers that this case had. I was sick to my stomach at one point but at the same time, it was interesting because I believe that's a sign of a good plot twist. I also just want to say that I love how good of parents Ellie and Alec are portrayed. It made me smile when Alec defended his daughter and then tore up her ticket.
Overall, I will say that it deserves the high ratings that it has on both IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes. It's definitely a show I will recommend in the future to other people and multiple rewatches. The cast was stunning and the stories were great!

it's the kids' fault. he wouldn't be here if they hadn't been encouraging him to put himself out there. it didn't really feel fair, he felt like he had betrayed them all and himself for so much of his life but they were so encouraging and kind. even dina was telling him to go out there and be happy, just as he had wished for her. it feels like a real stroke of luck when he finds out that same club was still open. it wasn't as though he was expecting to find the same man in there all these years later, he was most certainly married or had moved away by now. but the possibility of it makes something come alive inside of him. the club is a lot calmer than it was the last time alec was in there and he heads to the bar to order himself a drink, tapping his fingers lightly against the wood once he's got himself settled there. he takes a look around, sort of amazed at how familiar it all is. it's a real blast from the past.

closed starter for @tkachukmatthew
he takes in the clock on the side before he takes in anything else; the panic of being late for college causing any and all other feelings to numb even briefly. "oh fuck, i'm late-" he murmurs to nobody in particular, standing up and only then taking in his unfamiliar surroundings. "uh..." swallowing thickly, his steps come to a screeching halt. "holy fuck where am i?"
