TUTORIAL: HOW TO BUILD A UFO ROOF HOUSE.

yo! one of my friends asked me how I do this, so I thought I'd put together a little tutorial and share. here's a preview of what a "ufo roof house" might look like once you're done:

this is just a little one I built in Strangetown on a 10×10 lot, read below to learn how to do this yourself.

→ Step 1: Build your foundation (if you want one) + your first floor. The easiest way to do this is to make your walls an octagonal shape with the diagonal walls being half as many as the straight walls. As an example, you can see in the image below my straight walls are 6 units, so the diagonals are 3.

→ Step 2: Go up one level and lay a square of flooring for your roof to sit on, twice the size of your straight walls. My straight walls are 6 units, so my "roof square" will be 12×12.

→ Step 3: Using the small cone roof tool, drag from one corner of your square to the other, minus 1 unit. My square is 12×12, so the cone roof will be 11×11. You can see in the image below where to place your cursor to start:

→ When you're done with the small cone roof tool, it should look like this:

→ Step 4: Delete the excess flooring. You can press F to toggle from a full square unit to a smaller, triangular unit to trim the corners. Unfortunately, you can't click and drag to remove the corners from the diagonal walls, you can only shift click to delete one triangle at a time, but it saves you from having to put down walls or fencing you're just going to remove anyway.

→ Step 5: Decrease your roof's angle. On my normal houses, I usually use a 25 degree angle, which in this case, looks like this:

→ Step 6: You don't want your walls sticking out like this. So, adjust your roof's angle until they're not sticking out. The lowest I could get the roof's angle on this one was 39 degrees, which looks like this:

→ Step 7: Much better! Don't worry about that spiky bit in the middle, because we're going to add a dome roof to cover it up. You can start fiddling around with the dome roof tool by using the same amount of units as your straight walls, or you can go smaller. A 6×6 dome on this house looks like this:

→ I like my UFO domes a little smaller, so I went with 4×4. TIP! If you have an even number of straight walls, your dome will also be even, if it's odd, your dome will also be odd. If you had 7 unit straight walls for example, your dome could be 7×7, 5×5, 3×3, etc. Here's how my 4×4 dome turned out:

→ Step 8: Nice! We're pretty much done! Decorate however you like!

Animorphs #8: The Alien thoughts (pt. 4):

It's perfect that Ax is the first person to encounter a semi-sympathic yeerk, of any Animorph. Eslin 359 is so... humanized, for lack of a better word. He's motivated out of love, and revenge. He's right that he and Ax have something in common: Visser Three killed someone they love, and now they're willing to risk everything killing him. Ax has just been slapped in the face with the reality of the andalites' imperialism. And now along comes this yeerk who — unlike Ithileran, unlike Lirem, unlike even Noorlin, very like Elfangor — is willing to break the rules in order to do the right thing. Maybe the war isn't as simple as he's been led to think.

Also, I love all the andalite lip service to "freedom" in combination with their obsession with rule-following. Ax has to pledge allegiance perform a ritual to "freedom" every morning and will be reprimanded if he rushes it. Lirem cites the importance of "defending freedom" to explain why they let the hork-bajir get enslaved. The War Council says "our freedom" is the reason they can never communicate freely with other species. Applegate couldn't possibly be satirizing a different hyper-militarized imperialistic society, now could she?

"'I can almost understand the part about not giving us... megaweapons or whatever' Prince Jake said. 'But why all the other secrets?'... 'It's about keeping control of us,' Marco said. 'It's about power,' Rachel agreed. ...'No,' Cassie said... 'It's about guilt. Shame.'" —p. 128 A+ character-establishing, 10/10, no notes.

Actual Rules Lawyer Tobias Fangor! He promised Ax he wouldn't tell anyone about their mission... so he doesn't. He just shows up in Cassie's barn with a bloody piece of shirt, and tells them that only Ax can answer their questions about why. He promised Ax to follow andalite law on promises... so he does. He just hints that Jake should probably order him to tell the truth until Jake does, and then whoopsie, he's been ordered by his prince to spill the beans so he has no choice. Sir, I love him.

I am a pretty avid fan of sci-fi, and so I love me some fun alien design. And in recent years, we have had some much more interesting and nuanced takes on what communication between vastly different organisms might look like than the classic Star Trek universal-translator hand-wavey nonsense. But I so rarely see good examples of chemoreception in sci-fi--hell, we don't even classify chemosensing as one of the basic senses, and it is how the vast majority of life on earth communicates! And it's incredible! Take G. fasicularis, a symbiotic organisms whose main constituents are an ascomycete fungi and a cyanobacteria. These organisms are so vastly different from one another that they are in different Domains of life! We are more closely related to ascomycete fungi that it is to cyanobacteria, but somehow, using chemical compounds as their means of communication, they are able to find each other and thrive together in a lichen thallus. And we are just barely beginning to understand how this process works all around us on our own planet. Isn't that nuts? And to be fair, in Star Trek: Discovery 4x12, they finally did have a chemoreceptive alien species attempting to communicate with humans which was pretty great, so I can't say Star Trek falls back on hand-wavey bullshit all the time.
