I wanted to talk about Toothless and how his design and personality changed for the worst throughout the 3 animated movies (I won't be tackling any of the shows because I haven't watched them)

In the first movie he's at his best. His design is actually amazing, from the overall model structure to the patterns on his skin (which are visible in every shot, especially the ones taking place during the day, without ruining the 'illusion' of his black skin. It actually feels like it's resembling a panther aka black leopard in which the fur patterns are still visible). His face has a more aerodynamic shape, more sharp, a big curve.

His snarky but intelligent personality was really fitting for him. And we got to see more of it as the movie was progressing and he was getting more comfortable with humans.
In the second movie the patterns on his skin are still mostly there, way less prominent but still visible. His face got squashed down (a problem which only because stronger in the 3rd movie) but as a whole he still looks presentable, kinda. His posture changed too (but I'm too lazy to find evidence, you'll have to take my word for it).

I remember not having a problem with his personality in the second movie which is why I was surprised to see that this was only half true. He acts more domesticated, that's to be expected, but only around humans? When he interacts with other dragons it's like he's a completely different character, closer to what he became in httyd 3 than 1. He's still quite intelligent and more used to human equipment and people in general. In the first part of the film (especially this scene with Hiccup) he acts like how I'd imagine he should be in the 3rd movie, here it should have been a 'middle' ground, not 100% domesticated but not movie 1 feral either.

In the third movie he suffered the worst. Gone are the patterns on his skin, he's solid black now. His face got weirder too.
His personality got reduced to this stupid, slobbering 'dog'. His pupils are always dilated and his tongue almost constantly out. He acts unintelligent and he doesn't have that snarky personality he had in the first and even the second movie. He's basically a different character altogether. (That scene where he tries to 'woo' the light fury is embarrassing at best and shows exactly what's wrong with his character now).
They did it to make him more 'likable' to younger audiences + to make a good visual contrast to the light fury (who has an undercooked personality AND awful design as well), which is weird because they gave the light fury patterns on her wings?

The light fury looks like a beluga whale in the worst way possible. She has almost nothing going on visually to the point it doesn't even make sense. Her skin looks fragile, she's so weirdly smooth for no reason. It would legit be better if they took a night fury model and painted it white.

They gave her a 'cat' personality and took it away from Toothless (why couldn't both be 'cats'?). Also she's the 'girl' character, her only purpose is to be the romantic interest. She adds nothing to the film.
No comment in the live action design. Just ugly. Atrocious even.

Also something else that's been bothering me from the live action remake is this scene.
They've basically recreated every scene exactly as it was in the original so far (which is a bad thing) but the slight hesitation Toothless showed before touching Hiccups hand was the one thing they chose not to include? (I know the scene wasn't meant to have that in the beginning and it was an error in animation which they decided to keep because it gave the scene more personality so, why not include it in the live action?)
#I have so many opinions about these movies but they're mostly negative. the 1st one feels so detached from the others and it's a masterpiece#yes the patterns on his skin matter very much both to a 22 year old me as much as tgey dud in 8 year old me#I rewatched all 3 movies for this post and holy molly they're worse than I remember. except 1. ine is perfect#I rewatch it every year. the other two not so much. the 3rd I've actually only watched once#I dont like the whole 'my mother is alive and a super dragon master + everyone is kind of a dragon master actually. also toothless is alpha#takes away from the 1st idk#httyd#how to train your dragon#toothless#toothless httyd#not art#long post#httyd criticism

I had a breakthrough today.
It may seem ironic for a handmade sideblog, but i do have problems with dexterity. For all my years of knotting, I never fully got the "knot consistency" many seasoned bracelet makers have, and even with my experience my work has bumps here and there

This is not a lack of knowledge or experience thing, more of a dexterity problem that i have as an autistic, and highly likely dyspraxic person (not self diagnosing, more like self suspecting)
Now, here's my current work, and the row i implemented the method i'm about to tell you for comparison

Same pair of hands. same knowledge, you can literally see that i do have a more bumpy work earlier on. Do you know what's the difference?
I adjusted every single knot one by one instead of relying on getting the tension right alone.
But how do you do that?
Make a full knot on your pattern (according to whatever you're making)
grab your current string plus the strings that are already knotted in the row (alpha) or section (normal) with your non-dominant hand
using your dominant hand, start adjusting:
If your knot is loose (you see string stick out of the knot), pull on the color string
If your knot is tight (not visible), gently grab it and push it out while holding the other strings down to keep it straight
Use your finger to check if the row is straight. If you see a knot that is uneven (too high or too low), you can use a needle or a nail to gently move it where it should go.
That's it, literally. I just didn't write it down while working on the Ludwig pattern and forgot about it. I hope I can help at least one more person with this!

Here's the comparison with m&l Ludwig!

Hi I started knitting a while ago and wanted a ghost sweater or cowel or hat or tapestry or whatever so please enjoy my 3 hour project

This has not been tested, me and a friend are planning to hopefully make this soon! If you’re a mutual and would like to make this feel free to dm me! I rather others not until I’ve tested it but if you really must, obviously I’d appreciate the credit for it <3
Grid under cut!

It’s about 141x133 stitches in size, obviously can be made in any color you’d like. But I’m really proud of it! I love ghost (obviously) and love fiber arts so if I can add some patterns to the current lack I’d love to <3
Hopefully I’ll be back with an update for this soon!

The Memory Alpha wiki is helpful at times, but also really frustrating, because yeah, it's a wiki, and it's limited by its users like any wiki. But I've got two major issues with it, one really major and one ... sometimes a big deal and sometimes minor, but annoying at best.
1— The big issue: the wiki tends to whitewash the production histories of the show while also providing the most convenient and broadly detailed histories of each episode's production. So it's easy to rely on their versions, but if you do so, you're going to miss some really important things. For instance, Memory Alpha mentions that Shimon Wincelberg, the writer of "Dagger of the Mind," used "S. Bar-David" as a pseudonym, and that he was Jewish (his family fled Nazi pogroms in the 30s) and that:
He incorporated several references to Jewish parables into the screenplay.
There's no explanation on either the episode page or the page for the Bar-David pseudonym as to why Wincelberg used a pseudonym, or what the Jewish references in the episode even are. But if you go to Wikipedia, the plot thickens:
Shimon Wincelberg originally wrote a reference to Hillel the Elder's "Torah on one leg" parable, but Roddenberry mandated an attribution to "the ancient skeptic." Wincelberg, incensed by Roddenberry's rewrites, requested a name change to S. Bar-David for the airing.
If you go back to the aired episode, the villain (Dr. Adams) specifically dismisses Kirk's (entirely justified) skepticism in the context of "the ancient skeptic who demanded of the wise old sage to be taught all the world's wisdom while standing on one foot." The line about "all the world's wisdom" is "the Torah" if you check the source of this, and "the wise old sage" is either Hillel or his rival Shammai. So Wincelberg's script explicitly associates the Adams-Kirk conflict with a very major Jewish figure whom Adams evidently expects Kirk to know about, and Wincelberg was angry enough about Roddenberry's excisions that he wouldn't put his own name to the script. But the reference to a science lab Christmas party on the Enterprise is allowed to remain, and Helen's surname Noel is an unsubtle reference to Christmas.
If you follow the Wikipedia citation from that discussion, you get a whole article from 2015 about the tension between Roddenberry's intense antisemitism and the influence of Jewish culture on Star Trek. The article includes a discussion of a conversation between its writer and Leonard Nimoy himself:
"Gene was anti-Semitic, clearly," Nimoy replied as my heart sank. "Roddenberry had Jewish associates; Bill (Shatner) and I were both Jewish, as were others. To be fair, Roddenberry was anti-religion. And apart from being a ethnic-cultural entity, Jews, to him, were a religious group. But I saw examples not only of him practicing anti-Semitism, but of him being callous about other peoples' differences as well."
The article's ultimate conclusion is not remotely "fuck Star Trek"—it deeply loves it, in fact—but the legacy is fraught and complex. So that seems rather a lot to just breeze past, and Memory Alpha does this pretty regularly (the references to Grace Lee Whitney's ouster are often incredibly vague, for instance).
2— A sometimes lesser but still significant issue with the wiki is that it takes a very contemporary, Wookieepedia-style, canon-welding approach to very different, not-especially-cohesive ST projects that ... I don't like as an approach to Star Wars, either, but which feels particularly egregious for Star Trek, which I think has traditionally taken a looser, healthier, less continuity-obsessed approach to storytelling.
So, for instance, in TOS, the conflict between the Federation and the Gorn is a tragic misunderstanding; the Gorn are defending themselves against colonization. The twist the entire episode is built on is the revelation that the Gorn are the injured parties and aren't monsters at all (when the Gorn is winning the combat, he tells Kirk things like, "Wait for me. I shall be merciful and quick" and "Captain, let us be reasonable"). The Federation erred in colonizing their homes. The culmination of the episode is Kirk's defiant refusal to kill his Gorn opponent, or have the Gorn ship/crew destroyed when he has the chance; he instead chooses to try and talk to them and negotiate peace. SNW has, let's say, a rather different take on the Gorn. If you project SNW!Gorn backwards onto "Arena" to weld it all into one canon, you basically have to sacrifice the whole sense and point of the original episode (which was criticizing colonialism!) in the interests of some forced, anodyne continuity.
Memory Alpha sometimes notes continuity "issues" like these, but is never really willing to treat different projects as distinct narratives apart from the alpha/beta distinction. If you look at the citations for various statements about "canon," for instance, you'll see TOS, the original movies, TNG/DS9/VOY, AOS, SNW, and others all thrown in together into some kind of canonicity blender, without it even being clear which statement belongs to which canon. And that approach to ST is especially hard on Trek that had something important to say that's been smoothed away in the modern era of glossy but often much less ambitious Paramount productions.
#anghraine babbles#anghraine rants#long post#star trek: the original series#star peace#cw antisemitism#memory alpha critical#shimon wincelberg#leonard nimoy#gene roddenberry#snw critical#cw colonialism#anghraine's meta#c: who do i have to be#st fanwank#sw fanwank#i guess it's interesting in an in-story sense that adams now expects kirk to recognize a much vaguer reference to hillel. but ultimately#the mandated removal from roddenberry was about excising specific references to judaism from a german-born jewish writer#also honestly given the existence of 'bread and circuses' and 'patterns of force' there is even less justification for allowances here
