"Pity the child who knew his parents; Saw their faults; Saw their love die before his eyes; Pity the child that wise; He never asked "Did I cause your distress?"; Just in case they said yes"

Listen. Listen. LISTEN. I have been holding back on projecting too much on Steve, specifically with him being a lifeguard with an outdoor pool but also must admit that I have had to hold back on making a poto reference in RASEPSM because it hadn't come out yet. Physical pain from that.

But you came to me, on this blog with my headcanons, with the musical that I have such a clear memory of listening to for the first time in the most Steve Way (cleaning an outdoor pool in the rain with nothing but a bra and short shorts on, no clue what the hell I was getting into with this musical)

Chess is one of those batshit musicals that has a bunch of different versions and reorderings. (More drastic than just moving I Dreamed A Dreamed to after Lovely Ladies in Les mis 2012) so, unlike my OBC (i think? it may have been the west end version. it's been years) first time listening, we are saying Steve got the original concept album in fall of 1984. Not because he'd heard anything about it, but because he's spent two weeks listening to the Voulez-vous album after Nancy and he broke up and the music of Chess is written by the two B's of ABBA. It's a natural transition for a man who has a secret musical theatre stash.

(he doesn't really need to SEE them, he just likes listening to them. figuring out the plots by the songs. Also he's in love with Julie Andrews this is fact [aren't we all, though?])

He likes to listen to musicals while doing water tests and vacuuming the pool, but it's November so he doesn't do that, just. Lies on the floor of the livingroom trying to figure out what the fuck is happening in the musical. It is difficult. (He thinks there's a love triangle between the American grandmaster man, the Soviet grandmaster lady, and her loyalty to her country. Takes YEARS for him to figure out he's wrong. Just like meeee)

He likes the motifs, (Budapest is rising my beloved...) and how dramatic everyone is about this tournament. One Night in Bangkok is a fucking bop and a half. (I love how there's some interpretation of Freddie being ace because of the line "I get my kicks above the waistline, sunshine"[objectively iconic ace line in a pretty queer song], versus whatever the fuck Raúl Esparza had going on in 2018 that was. Uh. Not what I'd call an asexual interpretation of the character in that song but my god i doubt anyone was complaining.)

But. Pity The Child hits a bit close to home as he lies on his back on an immaculate carpet in a hollow house. Especially if you consider his mother may have used him to fill the emotional void where his father was supposed to be and put her emotional baggage on him with his father away on business and being unfaithful. (and also if you headcanon Steve as bi because that song is queer. I'm just saying. it is. even without the line "I was a fool and probably queer" but that line is there so. make of that what you will) And the line "I wouldn't call: a crazy thing to do/Just in case she said who?" STEVE LINE STEVE LINE

But also. That entire musical is chock full of people belting their hearts out about struggling to choose what they want. How they're supposed to go, what they're supposed to do. It's not about chess, or the cold war (well. It IS but...) It's also a lot about people wanting to be someone they aren't, and concerned about how they are perceived. Hmmm. HMMM. INTERESTING.

Like. Heaven help my heart?? I know him so well?? post s2 broken hearted Steve is called tf out. Basically the entirety of tape 2 of the concept album knocks Steve on his ass. Mentally, he is here:

And ofc Robin finds his little mixtape of sad musical songs is like "steve. why are you obsessed with this musical. I am IN drama and I haven't heard of it. what the fuck. there's russians. we aren't fond of those guys." and steve has to go

"Robin listen. The guys from ABBA wrote the music and it's KINDA queer, and also please listen to this song. you can't even tell who's russian it doesn't matter"

and robin listens which finally makes her realize

"wait. why did you get this to begin with? Just because of the ABBA guys?"

"Robin. I have a collection of possibly every officially released musical from the past twenty years. I just like 'em. Have you heard Colm Wilkinson's voice? Julie Andrews? ABBA guys were a bonus."

and now I'm thinking of Musical Theatre actor Steve but let's not get a head of ourselves but also imagine... steve on broadway and robin in the pit as trumpet... being besties

Dealing W/ Sick Batboys  Batfam x Reader

what each batboy is like sick and what their s.o. has to deal with!

Dick:

- he tries to pretend he’s not sick

- definitely the reason the whole family gets sick

- drinking too much of the kids medicine even though he’s an adult

- saying *pun intended* batshit crazy things

- “y/n the chandelier cures sickness i’m telling you it’s true”

- “damian you HAVE TO cuddle me when i’m sick get over here”

- the whole family flips into mother-hen mode because everyone hates it when Grayson goes down, they secretly need him

- Tim tries to make the dumb jokes and dad puns to fill the silence but it’s never quite right 

- coming over with soup to find dick smothered by the batfamily grinning

- you and alfred take turns making him stay hydrated and comfortable

- overall it’s really wholesome when dick is sick, how can you be mean to the guy when he can’t chase you with a batarang???

Jason:

- he avoids the batcave at first

- “no y/n Alfred’s soup will not fix me. i’m not letting the demon and replacment know i have an imperfect immune system”

- if he has a fever he becomes really honest, especially at night

- “i love my brothers. do they know that? they’re my family- why are you recording me?”

- finding him laying on the air conditioner naked because he’s over heating

- because the sickness weakens him he’s sweeter and can’t keep up the bad boy facade around you

- that doesn’t mean he stops with the flirting even though you’ve been dating for years

- “taking my temperature are we? i can think of some things to put in your mouth ;) ”

- letting dick come over when J is being a soft boi so jason can tell dick he loves him then continue throwing up

- J getting over the sickness and he just wants to kiss you all the time because he’s not contagious (he kissed you even when he was though...)

- secretly relishing in sick weeks with jason because he’s chill and loving and perfect for blackmail tapes, but enjoying when his flirtatious smirk comes back online

Tim:

- this kid will hook himself up to an IV drip to avoid sickness

- when he goes down he goes down HARD

- if he gets really sick it’s a fun ER visit, field trip!

- coffee doesn’t taste good when he’s sick making tim a regular human again

- you take the time to try to get him on a good sleep schedule

- fever dreams getting pretty bad

- he’s constantly sweating and will always try to get you to shower with him

- “y/n i’m so sick what if i DIE in the shower. you have to come for safety”

- he lets everyone dote on him, he likes that they worry it makes him feel appreciated and loved

- everyone telling damian they won’t just let “natural selection decide Drake’s fate”

- tim is the one person bruce gets concerned for because the kid is spleenless

- becoming the king of the house for a week or so while also fearing for your life takes a lot out of tim, you stay over a lot, just being with him to keep him calm and safe, anything for the worlds sweetest boi

Damian

- he refuses to see you at the risk of beloved getting sick

- trying to convince him that food poisoning isn’t contagious

- once you’re allowed over dami becomes a cuddle monster

- he just wants you to hold him and run your hands through his hair while you whisper stories about your day

- demanding Pennyworth make him soup

- lots of sketching and painting, he always draws sketches of you, he likes being able to drink in every inch of you, completely focused on each tiny detail from the light freckles on your nose to the way one dimple is larger than the other or how you bring your shoulders forward when you laugh

- throwing things at his brothers when they interrupt

- constant teasing about how “little baby dami is sick”

- he’ll say he’s fine too early and you’ve learned to force him to stay in bed 48 hours after he says he’s fine

- it always reminds damian why he loves being robin when he’s forced sit out for a week, he returns to the suit with newfound determination and appreciation for the activity of saving lives

- you are always so proud of your love bird for using sickness as way to create passion, one of the many way the lil nugget inspires you constantly

6 NEW TO BLU-RAY/DVD

"12 Monkeys" (Arrow)

Terry Gilliam emerged from the world of Monty Python and became one of the most fascinating director of the '80s and '90s, directing masterpieces like "Brazil" and "The Fisher King," both available in the Criterion Collection. To be honest, I remembered liking his Oscar-nominated 1996 loose adaptation of "La Jetee" but kind of put it on Gilliam's second tier. It's closer to the first, as evidenced in this gorgeous new Blu-ray release from Arrow Home Video. First of all, the 4K restoration is mindblowing, one of the best HD transfers of the year. Gilliam's world has depth and nuance in ways that it never has before, enhancing the overlal experience of the film. Second, the film's themes of responsibility and that form of insanity when it feels like you're the only person who really knows what's going on in the world still resonate. I still have some performance issues (Stowe, an actress I usually like, is bland) but this is the kind of visual feast that's perfect for a company that loves movies like Arrow. It gets me even more excited for next year's "The Man Who Killed Don Quixote."

"BlacKkKlansman"

Speaking of filmmakers who meant the world to me in the '80s and '90s, one of my favorite film stories of 2018 has to be the critical adoration for Spike Lee's latest film, one of his most searing and impressive in his recent filmography. I don't go in for the "Return to Form" stories around this flick though because Lee never really dropped as much as people think ("Chi-raq" is great) and I also think this movie is a tier just below his career best films like "Malcolm X," "Do the Right Thing," and "25th Hour." However, I'd be fine if it overperformed during awards season just to make up for the dozen or so times that Spike Lee was taken for granted this time of year. It's passionate, fascinating, funny, and moving, with great performances and more ideas for viewers to dissect and discuss than a dozen other films combined. It's an essential film of 2018.

"The Incredibles 2"

Does Pixar know something we don't? For years, everyone clamored for a sequel to "The Incredibles," to the point that it looked like it might never happen or people might not care when it eventually did. Of course, it did happen and it was GIGANTIC. It's the highest grosssing film in the history of Pixar, bringing in over $600 million domestically and over a billion worldwide. It is the ninth highest grossing film OF ALL TIME, and the highest grossing animated film of all time. Oh, and it's gonna win an Oscar for Best Animated Film unless there's voter tampering. And, of course, Disney/Pixar has delivered for fans with a gorgeous Blu-ray that includes a great transfers and extensive special features. One thing that's particularly nice is the inclusion of the short film that played with it, "Bao." Pixar often shuttles their shorts off to special releases, but it's nice to have "Bao" where it belongs, as well as a new short film called "Auntie Edna."

"Mandy"

Little was more fun this Fall than watching the buzz that I heard at Sundance about Panos Cosmatos' "Mandy" filter down from the mountains and out to the rest of the world. A movie that RLJ basically tried to shunt off to the video market was too batshit crazy to stay there, resulting in sold out screenings at places like the Music Box here in Chicago. Movies like "Mandy" don't make over a $1 million domestically, but that's a threshold that this wonderfully strange movie crossed. And it still feels like it's just getting started. I've already lent my copy to a friend. I'm sure other people are doing the same. "Mandy" ain't going anywhere, and strikes me as one of the films from 2018 that people will still be watching in 2028.

"The Princess Bride" (Criterion)

Speaking of movies that persist, there may be no film released in more special edition DVD and Blu-ray sets than "The Princess Bride," which has gotten Special/Anniversary/Limited editions since the DVD was invented. It's hard to believe anyone who's had a DVD player for any amount of time doesn't own it by now, but the Criterion release offers ample reason to upgrade. Of course, it will always be about the movie itself, which has never looked this good, courtesy of a 4K restoration. Believe it or not, Criterion also found a way to produce new special features, including two about William Goldman's beloved screenplay, and an interview with the film's art director. The set also includes tons of archival material that was on previous DVDs and Blu-rays. This really is the ultimate release for one of the most beloved films of its generation. It's a great idea for a holiday gift for the movie lover on your list.

"Teen Titans Go! To the Movies"

The film adaptation of the Cartoon Network hit kind of flopped at the box office, opening in 5th place (although it's worth noting that it only cost $10 million and made five times that worldwide). I hope more people catch up with it at home as it's a surprisingly funny, smart movie that deserves a bigger audience than, say, "The Grinch." In a week year for animation, it's a standout, offering jokes that work for both kids and adults.
