(Read the above in the voice of Francis York Morgan)
Backish~
Semi-better but at the same time not because my brain does NOT know how to take a break and dealing with grief and guilt takes time, AND my body decides to throw a little monkey wrench to keep things “fun.”
Finally drawing Elli’s face but art is slow in general with the block I have. Figuring out my disconnect and aversion to drawing has been frustrating(ugh perfectionism) but taking baby steps and being more patient is better than doing nothing at all. Old professors and 2020 really affected me more than I thought.
And doesn't help I'm picking up the hobby of sewing! Slowly learning but making some neat (dice)bags I hope to sell once I figure out how I want to design them.
Also started uploading a few of those semi-exclusive fics from this blog onto Ao3. A few of them have rewrites. It'll be a bit before I update my Notion with new links and text and likewise with here. (And may go back and lightly fix some spelling and grammar errors on the ones that I won't rewrite.)
Also Hollowed Defiance will be having some updates to some old chapters in the coming weeks. From that silly queued post I made, I really did find some issues and I'm fixing them as well as updating the continuity to prepare for future chapters. I question how I missed some of those issues during the first round of rewrites I did like a year+ ago.
Also those who followed for the [Prototype] fic that I posted ages ago(I am so sorry I had a block like you wouldn’t believe) on my Ao3, there shall be an update soon™️ with bonus rewrites to the first chapter. The brick of “here’s a new way to get the ball rolling’ smashed that block that was holding it hostage.

Do you find yourself staying up late at night trying to beat a game?
You put countless hours into beating it: collecting items, maxing out stats, and finding all the secrets it has to offer.
Soon after, you beat the game.
However, maybe the ending isn’t satisfying, or you crave more gameplay and content. What do you do? The game is over, there’s nothing left.
Coming to your aid is DLC or downloadable content – which thankfully has become a big part of the gaming business.
DLC allows game developers to continue to work on their games, adding new content and new additions that can modify gameplay greatly.
Games can be extended through new story missions, extra weapons, new secret areas, and more. There have been some truly great DLCs…and some DLCs that proved to be more of a train wreck than a benefit to the game’s overall presentation.
DLC also allows the game developer to go back and perhaps fix issues that plague the game that they weren’t able to fix or get to before the deadline of the game’s release. DLC can truly be the redeeming quality for developers and gamers alike.
I’m going to tell you about the different types of DLC, the best and the worst DLC released.
There MAY be spoilers ahead, so beware, reader!
Types of Downloadable Content
Back in 2008, I was playing Fallout 3 for the Xbox 360. I won’t drop any spoilers for those who haven’t finished it, but let’s just say that the ending left a lot to be desired.
The player plays these games for hours on end, investing their time, emotions, and intellect into a story of a game only to have it not deliver. It can be demoralizing.
Luckily for myself and others, Bethesda eventually developed extensive DLC to modify Fallout 3. It was a great experience, I was thrust back into the rich world of post-apocalyptic Washington D.C.
This is but one type of DLC, in my opinion, the best form that is offered to us gamers.

Story-based DLC
Like my example of DLC above, story-based adds new things to the game’s story.
It is either in the form of new quests or new characters, hopefully making your gaming experience more cohesive.
I personally love this form of DLC. With Fallout 3, it came in the form of Broken Steel, which fundamentally changed the ending, (or rather expanded upon it), and threw the player into a new set of adventures that added extreme longevity to the game, and added a new free-roam aspect to the game that was sorely lacking before.
Bethesda continued this tradition with their other Fallout games, as well as heavily modifying The Elder Scrolls Skyrim. Skyrim, along with having extensive modding capabilities, has received countless DLC packages since its release in 2011.
This allows for new, creative ideas to enter the fold and enchant gamers past the last chapter of the game’s story.
Extra Content
There’s nothing like downloading crazy new weapons or characters into one of your favorite games. One of my personal favorite games, Crusader Kings II, constantly gets updates and cool DLC all of the time.
The game started out in 2012 as a bare-bones strategy game set in the Middle Ages. Over the years, you got chances to play as new nations, have new strategic options, and new historical scenarios as well as new achievements.
This type of DLC keeps the game running for years to come – without necessarily upping the difficulty level. The developers of Crusader Kings II could have easily just released the base game in 2012, but they stuck with it, and make it seem new with every update.
This is a pretty broad category, including new characters, weapons, quests, and other features.
Best Downloadable Content
Tumblr media
1. Grand Theft Auto IV: The Lost and The Damned
This is one of the best DLC packages of the late 2000s. I personally loved Grand Theft Auto IV and the dark, sometimes humorous tale of Niko Bellic and his bloody quest of revenge through Liberty City.
It was a pretty lengthy game, but I still found myself sad that it was over when I finally got there. Luckily for me, Rockstar released two episodic DLCs after its release.
The Lost and the Damned, released in 2009, giving the player control of rough and gruff biker named Johnny who rode with the tough biker gang, the Lost. This was a great way to breathe new life into Grand Theft Auto IV, and it added new weapons, new vehicles, and a great story.
The Ballad of Gay Tony was released later in 2009, and it followed nightclub bouncer Luis and his dealings with his boss, the titular Gay Tony.
This was a great piece of DLC, not only because it added insane new weapons and features, but it also evoked imagery from earlier titles, specifically Grand Theft Auto: Vice City.
Related:Our 50 Favorite Game Design Tutorials
These two ‘episodes’ released by Rockstar are some of the best examples of how to do DLC right. You can tell that a lot of love, work, and passion went into creating funny, witty writing and that iconic GTA gameplay we all know and love.
2. Fallout 3 DLC
After Fallout 3’s ending, one where there was no choice as to what you did and didn’t allow you to play afterward, was disappointing, to say the least. With DLC Broken Steel, Bethesda remedied this issue by changing the story minorly with big results.
As the player character, you wake up in a Brotherhood of Steel base, and you continue the story. Not only that, but the maximum level cap in the game rose by 10, adding new incentives to the gameplay.
I think Broken Steel may be one of the most significant in the manner in which it addresses the story, but the other DLCs that were eventually released for Fallout 3 were great in their own right.
Point Lookout, released in summer 2009, was perhaps my favorite. It has the main character taking a ship from The Capitol Wasteland to southern Maryland, near the confluence of the Chesapeake Bay and Potomac River.
Dlc Info For Mac Os
The player is thrust into an eerie, atmospheric environment and story that is unlike anything else I’ve ever played. It’s always creepy, with insane new enemies lurking around every corner.
I remember finding an ‘abandoned’ cabin in the woods late at night. Of course, I wanted to loot the hell out of it, so I went inside. I wasn’t careful, though, and I heard ‘FOUND YA!’ behind me.
What I saw was a grotesque, inbred swamp dweller. Not only did it add horror to the game, but it created new, vivid experiences that I’ll never forget.
3. Dragon Age: Origins: Awakening
This expansion did much of what Fallout 3’s Broken Steel did. After the end of Dragon Age: Origins, the player character isn’t able to play after the main quest is done. In this case, it makes sense. Your story is complete and, (hopefully), you get the ending you want.
Awakening throws you back into the rich world of Thedas, where the Darkspawn threatening the world has been defeated.
However, there remains a lurking threat that needs dealing with. Who better to deal with it than you? You can either return as your accomplished character or create a new one and jump right back into the RPG goodness.
Like all good RPG DLC, the level cap was increased, and important new choices were included, as well as terrifying new enemies.
4. Oblivion – Shivering Isles
This one is a trip. You know Bethesda is great at world-building, and this is no exception. The player character is transported to the wild world of the Shivering Isles, governed by the mad Daedric Prince Sheogorath. The Isles are split into two sections: dementia and mania.
All the characters are unique and weird, culminating in your meeting with Sheogorath himself, an unhinged god with a Scottish accent.
The environment is so unique and strangely beautiful, consisting of beautiful vibrant colors, as well as melancholy and dark imagery for an experience you’ll never forget.
Worst DLC
1. Oblivion – Horse Armor
Yep, you knew it would show up eventually. The infamous Oblivion horse armor was one of the first DLC for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. Oblivion was such an iconic game, and so gamers expected nothing less when it came to the upcoming possibilities of DLC.
But compared to DLCs like Shivering Isles, this one is just downright insulting to players. It allows you to equip your horse with armor. Yep, that’s it: that’s the DLC. You go to a stable and get a free set of either Elven or steel horse armor. It’s downright insulting.
Designer Joel Burgess still defends their decisions:
“…more interesting DLCs were built on the back of the horse armor…there’s something to be said for giving the internet something to make fun of. You know you’ve made it, I guess.”
2. The Sims
This hurts me because I’m a huge Sims fan. However, their model of releasing DLC is insane. Sometimes you’ll see The Sims on sale, and you think, “Hey, that sounds great, there’s a lot of content.” STOP RIGHT THERE.
That’s just the base game. There are hundreds of DLC packs equaling hundreds of dollars.
It’s just not feasible for a gamer on a budget. While the DLC may be ‘good’, the method and volume in which they’re released are just not realistic.
Tumblr media
You ideally want all of the best DLC, but the list is huge.
The tragedy is that there are some truly great DLCs, but you can easily become overwhelmed by how many choices you have, and the sheer amount of money it would cost to outfit your copy of the Sims with the best content.
As of July 2018, if you wanted to have the COMPLETE Sims 4 experience, you would need to drop an insane $500+ dollars to acquire all DLC. On sale, it’s still $300+ dollars.
A small consolation. That should be considered a crime.
3. Dragon Age: Origins
Okay, so this is more an issue with the method of accessing the DLC. The DLC itself is pretty decent, but the way that it’s presented is…a little deceptive and underhanded.
You’ll run into a man named Levy Dryden at your camp amongst your NPC friends. He waxes and wanes about a quest he needs you to do. Nice rewards, new quest, glory; what’s not to like? Except once you want to accept, it pops u saying you need to purchase the DLC quest.
What gives, EA? I remember rejecting the quest out of sheer irritation.

4. Destiny: The Taken King
I remember sinking a lot of hours into Destiny’s raids and getting loot. It was a lot of work, but I leveled up pretty high.
Then the game kind of petered out. I liked it, but there needed to be more.
Then the Taken King came out, and something bad happened. New content, new story missions, and everything; things that Destiny needed.
However, the Taken King made some controversial changes to the base game that left others, myself included, a little frustrated. Content that was available and a standard part of the game was locked.
That meant that players that had not bought The Taken King would be locked out of day one content.
Dlc Info For Mac Catalina
This was a cheap move by Bungie, who has millions of fans who were part of a dedicated fan base.
It was a bitter pill: while the DLC was good, Bungie still essentially forced players to buy it whether they wanted to or not.
Conclusion
As you can see, DLC can be some of the best, and worst, aspects of a game. It can breathe new life into a rich world, allowing the player to enter new environments and engaging new characters.
Other DLC can add simple aesthetic items that really serve no purpose. Overall, DLC is a great way to keep a game selling and fans satisfied with the developers’ creative vision.

There is plenty of “fools gold” in the fitness industry these days: gimmicks, broken promises and plain misinformation.  Very few products and services hold their weight.  Body By Bolye On-Line (BBBO) is pure 24 karat gold!  BBBO is a unique resource available to all fitness professionals.  It’s a behind the scenes look into the top gym in America and a Coach with over 30 years of “In The Trenches” experience.  Video taped staff meetings, special guest lectures, assessments, and access to a plethora of MBSC programs make BBBO a MUST for any and all fitness professionals!  Essentially this is the only product of its kind that will allow you to have access to a “virtual” MBSC franchise.  My grandfather always said, “Quality is remembered long after the price is forgotten.”  Coach Boyle’s products are a MUST.  Plain and simple!  If you want to set yourself apart from the competition and invest in your future as competent, educated, well-versed trainer/Coach, I strongly recommend BBBO.  You can’t afford to miss out on this opportunity.

I have followed Coach Boyle’s work for some time due to the high quality and integrity with which he produces informational products as well as his passion for the industry. This year I have had the distinct honor of presenting to his staff on two occasions, and I can attest to the exceptional quality of work at MBSC. Tablet Usage Spikes During Covid-19
By Lisa Moshfegh, Product Marketing
In 2010, Apple reinvigorated the tablet category with the launch of the iPad. And while the worldwide tablet user base has surpassed 1 billion devices, tablets still make up less than 10% of new device shipments compared to mobile devices. The tablet—an in-between device—is less portable than a smartphone and does not deliver the same computing power and multitasking capabilities of laptops.
And then Coronavirus hit. In an April analyst call, Apple CEO Tim Cook stated that the iPad “...will improve on a year-over-year basis during this quarter—and that’s [from] customers that are either taking online education, or working remotely.” In this study, Flurry looks at how usage has changed on smartphones versus tablets to understand how shelter-in-place orders have impacted device usage behavior.
Flurry Analytics, owned by Verizon Media, is used in 1 million mobile applications across more than 2 billion active devices every month. For this analysis, we focus on the iPhones and iPads in the US market as a proxy for all smartphones and tablet usage. Apple continues to have a majority share in the US for both form factors. Additionally, focusing on one country allowed us to better pinpoint device usage changes based on when shelter-in-place orders were issued. Let’s review the data.
Tumblr media
In the chart above, we compare the percent change in average daily sessions per user, meaning how many times people use their devices each day. We took January 2020 as a pre-Coronavirus baseline and then compared how usage changed in the following months over that baseline, from February through May.
During February in the United States, there was little interruption to daily life despite the growing number of COVID-19 cases. This explains why the increases in iPhone and iPad usage were both modest and equal, 3% over the January baseline respectively. Similarly, most of the United States was open in March, as the majority of shelter-in-place orders came at the end of March, with some coming in April. That said, the US began seeing a first wave of school and business closures in mid-to-late March. Overall, daily sessions increased by 6% over the January baseline for both form factors. In April, however, Americans began heavily sheltering-in-place, with a strong rise in both distance learning and working from home. As a result, average daily sessions per user on iPad increased by 13% over the January baseline compared to only a 9% increase for the iPhone.
We believe the accelerated growth in iPad usage has to do with how its form factor is better suited to video, media and entertainment use cases. The iPad Pro screen measures a comfortable 12.9” diagonally. With people at home in such an unprecedented way, the iPad gained increased usage over the more portable smartphone which fits nicely in pockets and purses to take on-the-go. In addition, tablets pair nicely with Games, which as a category is seeing a 20% increase in average daily sessions per user since shelter-in-place orders were announced (more on that story coming soon). All of this explains the increase in tablet usage we’re seeing during this global health crisis that has people spending more time at home than normal.
Now let’s look at new devices entering the market by week since January, with new device activations from the first week of January as the baseline. Both iPad and iPhone sales have suffered during the pandemic, which shouldn’t come as a surprise given economic uncertainty and record unemployment levels. But what is interesting is the iPhone’s decline is much more dramatic than that of the iPad.
Tumblr media
Beginning in the second week of March, when California announced the nation’s first shelter-in-place orders, iPhone sales drop to nearly half of their baseline levels where they remain through May. iPad sales, on the other hand, drop only to 77% of January baseline levels. They quickly rebound to 90% of the baseline, where they held until early April, likely due to the release of a new iPad Pro on March 18th. Apple also released the new iPhone SE 2 on April 24th, yet the iPhone’s sales still hover around the 50% level. We believe the iPad’s less modest declines may partly be due to people finally deciding to invest in the iPad they’ve been eyeing because of the increased time at home expected for the foreseeable future.
Now that many states have lifted stay-at-home orders and are resuming some recreational activities, we will continue to monitor engagement on tablets. Did this period of isolation remind many Americans of the value of the larger screen or will we all return to our normal habits and simply reach in our pocket or purse or our trusty smartphone? As always, we’ll keep an eye on mobile device activity and update you as we see interesting trends. Stay safe!

Talking Tickets--1 May 2020--Refunds! Marketing! Seth Godin! And, More!
Hey!
How is everyone holding up?
I just want to take a second to thank all of you again for being here. If you need anyone to talk with or just to bounce an idea off of, let me know. I’m here for y’all.
Prioritize your mental health and if you don’t want to listen to me, listen to Harry Winks.
If you are enjoying this newsletter, tell your friends and colleagues to sign up by visiting this link.
I’m still dealing with intermittent internet issues that hopefully can be resolved soon so I can do some more webinars and such. I will still be co-hosting the Sports Biz Happy Hour with my buddy, Ken Troupe this afternoon at 5PM EDT. So come share a drink with us and our other hardcore happy hour colleagues. We will be voting on Ken’s new profile picture for Twitter this afternoon!
Get into our Slack group as well. We talk beef, business, and BS.
To the tickets!
————————————————————————————————————
1. We Will Come Out Of This Period:
There is no doubt that folks will be at venues, cheering, dancing, and connecting sooner rather than later, but we still have a long road back.
What is great is that we continue to see a bunch of efforts from folks all over the world that are working to help educate folks and get people prepared for relaunching the ticket industry.
We Will Overcome was started by my friends, Einar and Martin, from Activity Stream and includes support from folks around the world like  Frederic Auoad, Angela Higgins, Andrew Thomas, Derek Palmer, and too many folks to list in one email.
I’ve been pretty up front about taking care of yourself and reaching out to your community for support throughout this crisis, but as we enter May, I also want to make sure that we all spend time doing some planning and setting ourselves up to be successful when things begin to return to normal.
Trust me, they will. It is just what will the return of events look like and what will the market for folk’s attention look like…that’s what we have to really think about now. And, there are a bunch of really great resources to help you think through this, here are a few:
Eric Fuller is hosting a virtual conference called “Rescue Meet” and he’s launching on May 19th with a 60-75 minute web meeting and he’s asked me to participate along with folks from Live Nation and many other industry leaders.
Ticketing Professionals Conference in Birmingham is hosting many of their speakers and this year’s presentation online now. You can check out their listings and sign up for one, many, or all of them.
The Society of London Theatre has a bunch of webinars and information that they are sharing.
INTIX continues to host weekly lunches on Wednesdays and has a bunch of resources on their dedicated landing page for Covid-19 resources.
IQ is launching a virtual panel series as well with a pretty good lineup built around a lot of music and festival content.
If there is some resource or idea you are looking to learn or find out more about, let me know and I will help you find it. We will recover and we need folks to pull together and work together to get there.
2. What Will Things Look Like When We Return?
The truth is, none of us know.
The article above talks about a bunch of venues in the DC area and how they are planning….and, the truth is, no one knows anything right now.
Oli Shawyer wrote about the need to be clear and thoughtful in how we think about what our future selves might look like and his analysis of the current reality is right on. Right now, we think we are going to do one thing and in the future, we are likely to find that our actions are entirely different than what we imagined we would do…or, we may just be ready to do anything besides sit at home.
We have already seen organizations adapt and change to engage with people, entertain them, and stay connected. As a friend at an iconic venue noted to me, “it is amazing how we were able to become a digital content production facility in a week.” After struggling to get the necessary investments in tech prior to the coronavirus.
The only correct answer here is that we don’t know what things will look like when more countries start opening up again and we start seeing social distancing loosen up.
I have talked to a lot of folks about the idea of social distancing within venues and it is pretty unrealistic, difficult, or not entirely financially feasible to do the large scale social distancing that has been talked about in a few places this week. Most of the time, you have to look at the sources and the angle to know if there is some bias in these pieces and some of the ones in sports definitely have the hint of someone trying to drum up demand like Scott Boras does with his notebooks on his clients.
I do think that as you prepare for the return, it is important to think through the entire experience you want to provide from start to finish, how you can better curate your event, and walk through the concerns and questions your guests are going to have.
Repeat: start by understanding the value you want to create for your guests and work from there.
3. Refunds are starting to become a little clearer now:
MLB teams started announcing their plans for refunds and cancellations this week with the Red Sox, Cubs, and Cardinals leading the way. But it hasn’t been nearly fast enough for the people that have been left in limbo by the fact that games and events have been postponed due to the coronavirus.
And in Europe, Ligue 1 was the first major league to call it quits for the season.
Admittedly, teams and organizations have been slow to announce refund and exchange policies or they have had to adjust them because of the nature of the virus, the shutdown, and the uncertainty.
From my point of view, StubHub got killed for going first and trying to do right by their stakeholders early on when things were so crazy, but the bigger issue for the organizations around the world has been in not communicating with their customers, in many cases, at all.
As an example, I had conversations with folks in several cities over the last week from around the country and these corporate ticket buyers told me that in most cases no one has called to talk with them about what is going on right now with their tickets, with updates, or just to check on them…from my conversations that included teams in most of the major sports. If that is widespread, that’s unconscionable and it will be tough for teams to ever overcome.
You may not know anything, but you need to at least communicate enough with your customers to let them know that you can’t give them an answer yet. Put yourself in your customer’s shoes and imagine how you would feel.
It is this lack of communication and the changing nature of the policies that some organizations have been rolling out that has likely led to these lawsuits being filed this week…
In England, Brighton and Hove Albion announced their plans for next season as a hopeful sign that football will return sooner rather than later…I’m hoping that this season of the Premier League can be completed because if not Spurs will be out of European competition next year and I don’t like that.
The NFL is looking to announce its schedule next week and there is abit of a conversation around whether or not putting out the schedule and selling tickets is a wise decision.
What do y’all think?
For me, it would be pretty risky for the NFL to start selling tickets…especially understanding what the current environment with refunds looks like, but what do I know? (Shameless plug…I was quoted in SBJ this week.)
Maybe, we can all just buy tickets for our cardboard representations?
4. Marketing, Community, and Connection Will Matter More Than Ever:
This is awesome because I get to write about Seth Godin in my ticket newsletter.
The backstory is that Seth put out a manifesto called Stop Stealing Dreams about 8 years ago and he challenged folks that read his stuff and follow him to find ways to share the content. I’d just bought a new iPad and was testing out GarageBand, so I did the first audio version of the manifesto.
With that, I got my first dose of internet fame! Now, look at me?!
The podcast and the article that introduce the podcast are totally worth the hour, even if you aren’t in the arts.
Seth hits on some ideas that have been at the core of my work in marketing and tickets over the years as well like community and connection.
I was on the internet with Frederic Aouad from Stay 22 on Thursday and we talked about the need to be better at marketing because the world that we will return to is going to be more competitive than ever and the need to give people a clear reason to come visit is going to be more important than ever before.
I’ve been writing and speaking about marketing and strategy for about a decade and what I found was that folks know they need to be better marketers and want to sell more stuff, but the “way we’ve always done things” is a tough competitor to change.
Now, we find that it isn’t possible to go back to the way things have always been done. We are seeing organizations change in a week or less, rethink their value, and brainstorm tons of new solutions…in tickets and everywhere.
The fact is that marketing is magic. That’s where the money is. That’s where the stories are. That’s where you can build relationships with your audience that can take you all over the world and to places you’d never imagine. (I’m speaking for myself here.)
But being good at marketing is tough.
You want a jumping-off point, start here with Rory Sutherland.
But all of us are going to need to sharpen our marketing knives because we are going to need them in the coming months and years. And, just giving into the tactical aspects of marketing isn’t likely to win you the business you need or the support you have to have to be successful.
I could go on all day about marketing and the need to market more effectively, but I won’t today.
5. Here are a few things that I loved or thought were interesting this week that don’t have a common theme:
First, how about that Post Malone fundraising concert where he covered Nirvana songs. I thought it was pretty good. And, he’s raised some serious coin for the WHO.
Every morning I read a newsletter called, “The Daily Coach” from George Raveling. Coach Raveling coached Harold Miner at USC and was instrumental in getting Michael Jordan to sign with Nike. The newsletter on Thursday was all about leadership and the first two points are super important right now.
The Mayor of London announces a fund to support the arts and culture. We need similar things in the States, but I’m not holding out on that one.
Live Nation is being sued for monopolizing ticket sales.  To quote Scott Galloway, it is good to invest in unregulated monopolies. This will be interesting to watch because the government has approved the deals that Live Nation has made and antitrust enforcement as a way to increase competition in the market hasn’t been a priority for a long time. So we will see. I’ll be watching it.
J Cobb shared the video of the world’s worst Old Fashioned and the redemption story that followed. This is fun and maybe that’s what I will drink this afternoon at happy hour.
Mark Pollard is an advertising strategist in NYC and he came up with the idea for a summer camp to help folks focus on their strategy. I’m going to talk with Mark about this and maybe as we work our way out of this shutdown, we can do something similar for marketing and selling tickets. I mean, 100 days for like $30 with 100 new exercises. That’s like the price of a book!
—————————————————————————————————————-
What am I up to this week?
You know, teaching fourth grade…poorly.
I’ll be in the home office all week, if you want to chat, let me know. My Internet connection is still a bit iffy due to my blown cable box, but the McGyver move I pulled to get it to work is genius. So I’m holding off on a lot of things that need the technology boost to produce them.

Rapid Growth of SaaS Accounting Software Xero and QuickbookOnline
Rapid Growth of SaaS Accounting Software Xero and QuickbookOnline
(No Ratings Yet) Loading...
– High growth potential for SaaS Accounting software of 4.9% CAGR to $4.04 billion in  2019
– Xero & QuickbookOnline are the 2 established players in the field with growing subscribers.
– Main features, pricing and drawback are introduced and explained. Growing acceptance with accounting firms that are built around them in Singapore.
  SaaS Accounting Potential
According to recent research by technology consulting firm IDC, the market for payroll accounting would grow at 4.9% CAGR to reach $4.04 billion by 2019. This is driven by demand for Software as a Service (SaaS) market of 16.4% CAGR growth as compared to 0.4% CAGR growth for the on-premise market. The on-premise market is essentially bleeding out to the SaaS cloud computing market.
The majority of the SaaS demand came from small and medium businesses as they are attracted to the low entry fee of cloud computing. Cloud computing allows the vendors to bundle the cost of hardware and software and scale it to out to businesses online. Large businesses have the scale to support on premise software which requires large upfront investments and for the time being, they have chosen to support their existing system instead of taking the risk of business disruption.
This rapid growth highlights the game changing impact of SaaS accounting. Payroll is a function of accounting which essentially moves funds between bank accounts periodically. The current industry practice of leading SaaS accounting software vendors would be to combine payroll services with inventory, budgeting, invoicing, time tracking and reporting functions. They provide tiered pricing which allows you to choose the bundle of accounting services required.
Leading SaaS Vendors
The SaaS accounting industry is a competitive and packed industry as it has low barriers to entry. Softwareadvice has a long list of 59 software for you to consider. For this article, we will just focus on 2 leading vendors. Xero and QuickbookOnline.
Source: Scoop
Xero started in 2006 and was listed on the New Zealand stock market in June 2007. As we can see, Xero had experienced high growth rate since its listing.
QuickbookOnline is developed by Intuit and it has both the desktop and cloud version. As we can see on the chart below, its online version (QBO) had also seen steady growth.
Source: Market Realist
As you see, both companies are riding on the rapid growth of SaaS accounting services. We would be looking at some of the features of their products which attracted scores of companies to them like bees to honey.
Feature – Chart of Account
Both are developed for small business users and they got their basics right. The basics of any accounting system would be the double entry system and all the major accounting functions from payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable and inventory management are covered. These are presented in a Chart of Account as shown below.
Source: Streamtime (Xero Chart of Accounts)
Source: SageWeddingPros (QuickbookOnline Chart of Accounts)
Both QuickbookOnline and Xero understand that users of the system may not be trained accountants. This is why they have special access for accountants to look through the accounts to ensure that they conform with traditional accounting standards. It should be noted that both software provides full audit trail automatically.
Feature – Reconciliation
The next worth feature would be reconciliation of accounts. As mentioned earlier, reconciliation can be a very time consuming activity but absolutely vital for proper accounting. Both companies allow for full integration with your bank account, PayPal and credit cards.
Source: Jetbookeeping for Xero
As you can see, if the accounts match, you would just have to click ‘ok’. If not you can create a new record or transfer the funds away. If you are unsure, you can even leave a comment behind for your accountant. For regular payments, you can also create a rule to reconcile automatically.
Source: QuickbookOnline
For QuickbookOnline, they allow you to reconcile by each account (checking account in the example above) and when the difference is $0, then it is considered fully reconciled. You can then just click Finish Now.
Feature – Invoicing & Billing
Invoicing is a repetitive feature that can be streamlined especially for repeat customers. The same details do not need to be repeated twice and this applies for when you receive a bill from your suppliers. For bills, they might require different levels of approvals and this can be done.
Source: Xero
For Xero, if the customer is not a Xero client, they will get a free account that allows them to view all the bill that you have sent to them. If they are a Xero client, they save it in their own account and pay from their account. Alternatively, they can choose to batch pay.
Source: QuickbookOnline
For both, you can actually see the unpaid amount for your clients and the invoice can be automatically sent to their email address.
Feature – Reports
After all your accounting efforts, it all boils down to your profit and loss statement.
Source: Google
QuickbookOnline provides a detailed report as seen above that shows the sources of your income and expenses.
Source: Xero
This is Xero’s version of the profit and loss report which allows you to switch for different periods. It can also be exported and saved.
Similarities & Pricing
If you look at the 4 main features that were introduced, you will realize that both Xero and QuickbookOnline are quite similar in terms of functionality. The only difference is in terms of style and this is due to the intense competition between the 2 of them. When Xero burst into the US scene in 2012, they took away substantial business from QuickbookOnline which forced them to play catch up.
It should be noted that pricing always change over time. This pricing is extracted from both companies as of January 2016.
Xero (in USD) QuickbookOnline (in USD) QuickbookOnline (Singapore Version) Independent Contractor: $7.99/month for 12 months (after $9.99/month) Starter: $20/month Simple Start: $10.36/month for 12 months (after $12.95/month) Simple Start: $15/month Standard: $30/month Essentials: $18.86/month for 6 months (after $26.95/month) Essentials: $16.10/month for 12 months (after $23/month) Premium: $40/month Plus: $23.97/month for 6 months
(after $39.95/month)
Plus: $18.60/month for 12 months
(after $31/month)
The price of the products are listed above for easy comparison and they are all priced in USD. As you can see, QuickbookOnline had made it a point to price themselves below Xero due to the intense competition between the 2 of them. QuickbookOnline has a Singapore version that is IRAS compliant and eligible for the $200 Productivity and Innovation Credit Scheme.
For Xero, the pricing for each tiered package is straightforward as seen above. For quickbookonline, they have a lower price for a period of 6-12 months before the normal price is applied. Note that all prices are charged in USD.
Outage Drawbacks
While it is much cheaper to use cloud services, one of the major drawbacks is that you are entirely dependent on the service provider to keep its service online. For example, Intuit QuickbookOnline was not available for 6 hours in February 2009 due to ‘network issues’, for 12 hours in June 2010 and 36 hours in July 2010 due to power failure.
For Xero, they had their major outage in June 2009 ‘for hours’ when their host Rackspace was hit by power failure at its Dallas centre. These are just the major outages that last for hours that are widely reported and noted. There are many smaller outages that are ignored by the media. Just like Singapore’s MRT trains, you would have to accept imperfections in an otherwise perfect system.
So while the SaaS prides itself as being the service that is on demand and that you pay for what you consume, sometimes the problem is that you may not be able to get access when you need it the most. Once there is a power outage, it will affect a wide cross section of companies. Not only is availability an issue, your data might be corrupted and so it is always a good idea to backup your data periodically.
Conclusion
Nothing is perfect. The good thing is that these companies have learn their lessons and there are no major disruption in the past 5 years. Improvements have been made such as mobile access on your phones and iPAD for you, your accountants, investors and anyone that matters. These are incremental improvements so they are not written about in detail.
The main benefit of SaaS accounting software is that their low monthly cost and no upfront investments had allowed small businesses to gain access to high quality acccounting services. There are entire accounting firms in Singapore that package their services around Xero (e.g J-Accounting) and QuickbookOnline (e.g. Chiew-Accounting) for a comprehensive accounting package.
Hence it is clear that SaaS accounting is slowly but steadily gaining acceptance. While there might be a new notable entrant or an existing player that might improve their services to gain notice, for now Xero and QuickbookOnline are the 2 leading vendors.

On the third Friday in August, Jesse Angelo, the longtime News Corp executive hired in June as president of global news and entertainment at Vice Media, gathered the staff of the company’s nightly news show to deliver their fate. Vice News Tonight had run on HBO for three years, until the network canceled it this spring — the final episode aired last Friday — and the 200-person Vice News staff had spent the summer waiting to see if another premium platform (Hulu? Amazon? Showtime?) might pick up the show. Angelo told the staff that he and Nancy Dubuc, Vice’s CEO, had just returned from a company board meeting in Los Angeles with news of the show’s destination: They’d been given orders to bring it home. VNT would now air on Viceland, the company’s cable channel.
The switch to basic cable was better than the total dissolution of the show and everyone losing their jobs, but since Viceland’s inception in 2016, it has struggled to find a meaningful audience (it averages under 100,000 viewers), and the news was met with skepticism. “The commonly held assumption is that this was the last resort,” one Vice News employee told me. “This is what everybody was afraid of.”
HBO’s cancellation hadn’t come as a shock, especially after AT&T’s purchase of Time Warner, the network’s parent company, and the subsequent departure of CEO Richard Plepler. VNT won awards — it was nominated for 19 Emmys this year, more than any other nightly news broadcast — and had steady, if modest, ratings on HBO. But the show had been unable to break through the noise with its fresh take on the nightly news, aside from a viral segment covering the 2017 white-supremacist rally in Charlottesville, hosted by the Peabody Award–winning reporter Elle Reeve. The show’s exit from its prestige-network host was disappointing to journalists and producers who had come onboard as much to work for HBO as for Vice. Dubuc had kept the cancellation news from the VNT staff, including Josh Tyrangiel, who ran the show, for several weeks; Tyrangiel resigned a few days later, and a trickle of other employees have left since. Earlier this week, Reeve announced she was leaving to join CNN — the very network Shane Smith, Vice’s boisterous co-founder, had long insisted that Vice would someday replace.
Those who remained were now learning that the show would be fundamentally changing, and Angelo did his best to temper the disappointment. HBO had been a “lovely garden,” he said, according to a recording of the meeting shared with New York, but “it was an extremely walled garden,” and they would now be able to share their content more easily online. Most significantly, the team would no longer be producing just a half-hour show: All three hours of the network’s prime-time block, from 8–11 p.m., would now be built by the Vice News team.
What three hours a day of Vice News will look like remains a question. (Getting the essentials out of the way, one employee asked Angelo whether they could still say “fuck” on basic cable.) Angelo presented the unfilled airtime as an opportunity for creative thinking, and said he expected it to be made up of pretaped shows and live reports, which generated murmurs and questions about whether this meant an investment in the infrastructure required to do that. Earlier this year, Viceland tried to fill two of its prime-time hours with Vice Live, a nightly live variety show shot in the lobby of its Williamsburg office; the show lasted just six weeks. One employee asked Angelo if this meant Vice was trying to compete directly with the prime-time talking heads on CNN or MSNBC. “We’re not gonna look like anybody else,” Angelo said. “But all of those people, in my book, are on notice that Vice News is coming.”
Angelo said the new plan would require “a lot more people,” while deflecting a question about who would pay for it all. According to multiple people with knowledge of the show’s budget, HBO had spent $42 million a year on VNT, while A&E, which co-owns Viceland, is planning to allocate roughly $56 million for the new three-hour block. While VNT employees admit that the show was sometimes more expensive than it needed to be, it was unclear how a 33 percent bump in resources would cover a 500 percent increase in airtime. “Even in some Mxyzptlk alternate universe where AT&T didn’t buy Time Warner, and Richard was still running HBO, and the show was renewed on HBO, here’s a newsflash for everybody: It was gonna be renewed at a much lower price point. Period,” Angelo told the staff. “There is no universe where the Willy Wonka Golden Ticket that was given to this newsroom was ever gonna happen again.”
“Making do with less” has become a theme not just at Vice News, but across the company. (As it has across the news industry in general.) Last year, the Wall Street Journal reported that Vice was on track to lose $50 million and to post revenues of between $600 and $650 million — less than it made two years earlier, and far less than the $1 billion Shane Smith, the company’s co-founder, had promised it would be making by now. In February, Vice laid off 10 percent of its employees. (Tyrangiel told his staff at the time, “The pursuit of growth was everything for the previous ten years and on Friday we closed offices that — I gotta be honest — I did not know existed.”) In April, the company’s reported web traffic dropped 49 percent when it stopped counting traffic generated by an affiliate network that included low-rent sites like Ranker.com. In May, Disney wrote down its entire $400 million investment in Vice — a declaration that it believed its investment to be worthless.
That month, Vice also raised $250 million in debt from investors. Paying freelancers and fixers on time has long been a problem at Vice, but employees in various departments say the cash-flow issues became more prevalent this year. Producers found themselves unable to take out petty cash for video shoots. Several senior employees had charges to their corporate credit cards inexplicably declined; one employee who left Vice this spring is still being hounded by debt collectors because Vice has not settled the roughly $3,000 left on a corporate card assigned to their name. Many current employees I spoke to lamented the diminishing quality and quantity of the in-office snacks — soda had disappeared, donuts were no longer included in Bagel Fridays — with opinion split on whether this was a budgetary issue or an attempt at improving employee health. (“People are saying things like, ‘This is sugar shaming,’” one employee told me.) “I was told by the accounting department that we couldn’t pay all of our bills,” a senior employee who left Vice earlier this year said. “I would get emails from businesses we had partnered with saying they hadn’t been paid, and the accounting department would say, ‘We don’t have the cash, and we have to decide who to pay.’” In one instance, a stock-photo company complained that Vice owed it tens of thousands of dollars.
All of this was happening as the company worked to consolidate itself into “One Vice,” as the internal corporate-speak goes. Earlier this year, Vice combined its various digital brands (Noisey, Broadly, Munchies, Motherboard, and so on) under the umbrella of Vice.com. Tyrangiel had walled off Vice News from the rest of the company, to the happiness of his employees and the frustration of people elsewhere in the company; Vice.com has a “News & Issues” desk that has operated separately from the Vice News team.
This departmental consolidation is occurring under Angelo, a seasoned news executive — if not, precisely, in the Vice mold. Before his current position, Angelo was best known for working throughout various parts of Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp empire, as a reporter and editor at the New York Post, then editor of The Daily — not the New York Times podcast, but Murdoch’s failed early-2010s attempt to create a newspaper exclusively for the iPad — and most recently back at the Post, as publisher, until leaving the company in January. In his meeting with the Vice News staff, Angelo talked about “leveraging across multiple platforms and products” and said he’d be thrilled if Vice News reporters started contributing to, say, a podcast in another part of the company. (Angelo, like every other media executive, has expressed a particular eagerness for podcast ideas.)
The Vice News integration into the rest of the company began just before Labor Day, with roughly 15 layoffs of Viceland employees in preparation for the network’s pivot to news. The company is now unrecognizable to many of the people who joined in the 2000s, the vast majority of whom are gone. In July, a few months after Vice folded Broadly, its women’s site focused on gender and identity, into Vice.com, the Wall Street Journal reported that Vice was in talks to acquire Refinery29, a women’s site whose tone and audience could hardly be more different from the one Vice employees thought they were targeting. Katie Drummond, who joined Vice from Medium in March to run its digital operation, including the consolidated Vice.com, told a group of Vice.com employees shortly after she arrived that she didn’t really like Vice.com, and rarely read it before joining the company.
As many have observed, the lawlessness that characterized an earlier era of Vice, which remains a key component of the brand’s appeal, has also given way behind the scenes to the kind of rigid human-resources apparatus of a company looking to be taken seriously. This spring, as part of Vice’s annual Weed Week around 4/20, a Vice producer came up with the idea to make a video in which Lil Yachty, the rapper, would try to set the Guinness World Record for rolling the world’s heaviest blunt. The idea was approved, but the amount of weed that was purchased and sent to the Vice office was enough to qualify them as a marijuana distributor. Two senior employees were fired as a result.
But the remnants of Old Vice linger, and many employees I spoke to found themselves asking: Where’s Shane? Smith has been largely quiet since handing over the reins to Dubuc last spring and elevating himself to executive chairman, although in May, at the prompting of the Vice News team, he held several off-the-record dinners with congressmen and staffers in D.C., hoping the same charm that wooed countless media executives and chief marketing officers would work on a political world the Vice News staff has had difficulty reaching.
One thing that’s certain is that Smith never planned to still be looking for someone to cash him out of his company. In 2015, he told one of his employees that the company would be sold before VNT ever aired on HBO in the fall of 2016 — three years ago. A once-floated IPO now seems out of the question, leaving Dubuc, whose contract reportedly rewards her in the event of a sale, to try to find a buyer. In February, Tyrangiel told his staff that Vice’s investors were demanding that it become profitable this year, and a person with knowledge of the company’s business strategy said Dubuc hopes to find a buyer by the end of next year. In August, Vanity Fair reported that Dubuc had been trying to woo CBS-Viacom, deploying the same logic that had led so many investors, media companies, and brands to Vice: You know old people, we know the youth. (Among the problems with the idea is that Bob Bakish, Viacom’s CEO, said in 2016, “Unequivocally, I have no interest in buying a stake in Vice, and we are not going to do it.”) Some employees have noted the fact that Jesse Angelo is childhood friends with James Murdoch, Rupert’s progressive-ish son,who has been on Vice’s board since News Corp’s 2013 investment in the company. Murdoch received $2 billion last year from News Corp’s sale of 21st Century Fox, and is said to be interested in making his own mark. In April, the Financial Times reported that Murdoch planned to use his spoils “to assemble a new portfolio of media companies that could include a liberal-leaning news outlet.”
Vice does have assets to offer a potential buyer. Despite Viceland’s poor ratings it remains a nicely profitable business thanks to the carriage fees from cable providers. (In his Q&A with the Vice News staff, Angelo avoided saying the name Viceland, and several employees told me they expected the channel’s name to be rebranded.) Spotify is paying Vice to make podcasts, and a documentary series with Hulu has been in the works for months without being officially announced. Vice Studios produced the Netflix Fyre Festival documentary and has a movie out this fall with Adam Driver. Employees on the digital side say traffic has stabilized, and the company is hiring. Vice has a popular astrology app. And the world’s largest companies and organizations, from Marriott and Sephora to Philip Morris and the Saudi Arabian government, still see Vice as a way to reach young people. The Journal has reported — in a story about the Viceland layoffs — that the company exceeded its decreased revenue goals in the first half of this year.
But it’s unclear how much all that is actually worth. In 2017, Vice was valued at $5.7 billion, an implausible number then that seems laughable now. Citing a company insider, Vanity Fair reported that the valuation is now closer to $1.5 billion. (In 2016, Smith told the Journal that by 2020, Vice could be worth $50 billion.) Whatever the price, the clock is ticking. Vice’s deal with TPG, the private-equity firm that poured $450 million into the company in 2017, includes a clause that allows TPG’s stake to grow until the company is sold. In 2016, Smith declared that by distributing stock to employees, Vice saw itself “as a tech company,” boasting that, on paper, Vice had minted 250 millionaires, with 2,000 more on the way. While some early employees have been able to cash out some of their options, the vast majority — who arrived more recently and purchased their options at an inflated valuation —are likely to see almost no return at anything close to a $1.5 billion valuation. “I’m pretty sure that my shares are worthless,” one employee told me.
For now, the company is “doubling down” on news, as Angelo put it to the staff. The new slate of programming is expected to launch later this year, and after two days off following Friday’s HBO finale, the Vice News team is returning to the working groups established to brainstorm what exactly they should do with three hours of nightly news. The Vice News employees I spoke to were largely apprehensive about what it would take to build three hours of nightly TV. Some were intrigued by the possibilities — including the idea of getting their own shows and becoming the Rachel Maddow, Sean Hannity, or Anderson Cooper of Vice. All of them described VNT as the most diverse, creative newsroom they had ever been a part of, with award-winning journalists covering stories that didn’t get much play on the cable-news networks they were now going directly up against, and none of them wanted to see it go away. But pretty much all of them were entertaining other job opportunities.

Can a Radical New High School Disrupt Education in Philadelphia?
City
A small group of reformers wants to change the fundamental vision of what a classroom should be. It’s as hard as you might imagine.

Gina Moore draws a sip of grapefruit-tequila cocktail, a small black notebook cradled in her lap. A financial professional and mother of two in her late 40s, Moore is sitting in the lobby of a Manhattan hotel that’s inconspicuous from street level. A copper-clad doorway leads down a set of subterranean steps to where she sits. Her salt-and-pepper bob fashionably matches the flapper-era-inspired decor.
Moore is trying to locate one of her favorite quotes by one of her intellectual heroes, philosopher John Dewey, who passed away five miles from here in 1952, inside a residence overlooking Central Park. Dewey was an on-again, off-again Marxist and the undisputed “chief prophet of progressive education” in America, as the New York Times said in his obituary. Put simply, he’s not exactly required reading for your average MBA.
Moore’s New York visit isn’t for her day job as a high-powered principal at the Center City investment firm AJO, though; it’s for one of her side projects. For the past two years, Moore has been spearheading a bold soup-to-nuts plan to launch a visionary private high school in Center City Philly — called, fittingly, the Revolution School — that will open its doors in the fall of 2019. The school is premised on a progressive model that views grades as secondary to the production of curious, self-advocating minds. To that end, Moore has been busy researching nontraditional schools around the world, reading Dewey’s theories, and speaking with experts, some of whom she’s hired to co-create the Revolution School with her.
Today, Moore is meeting with a Canadian thought guru named Shane Parrish who runs an organization called Farnam Street. It’s an online community (185,000 newsletter subscribers) of global professionals interested in brainy stuff like mental models, theories of decision making, and something called “double-loop learning.” Functionally, Farnam Street is something of a guidebook to lifelong learning for adults. Moore is intent on adapting some of its practices and philosophies for the Revolution School’s curriculum.
“We can be modeling the same kinds of things that he’s trying to get people to think,” Moore tells me later. “We want to expand the intellectual horizon at a younger age, encourage the ability to spot patterns that exist across our natural systems and lives.”
That’s what the Dewey quote she’s been trying to locate also speaks to; it’s a line from the philosopher’s 1938 book Experience and Education. Moore reads it aloud from her notebook, then texts a photo of it to me for good measure:
For I am so confident of the potentialities of education when it is treated as intelligently directed development of the possibilities inherent in ordinary experience.
Shane Parrish arrives, looking decidedly less Jazz Age than Moore in shorts, a polo and Nike Airs. Moore speaks with Parrish regularly. A month earlier, she spent a weekend in Portugal at one of his retreats. He’s since taken an interest in the Revolution School.
Immediately, they begin discussing education. “We don’t teach people how to learn, and yet we put them through school for 15 years,” Parrish says.
“Not all experience needs to be educational,” Moore says, returning serve. “Some experience is miseducation, teaching you how not to do it.”
When it comes to education in America, almost everyone agrees that elements of the system — if not the entire system itself — are broken. Gina Moore, who is the financial mind and self-described “cheerleader in chief” — fund-raiser, booster and business planner — behind the Revolution School, concurs. Except instead of moving to the suburbs or writing a check to her favorite charter du jour, she’s reaching for something more audacious. Moore wants to disrupt the fundamental vision of what a classroom should look like.

Two months earlier, in June, a couple dozen parents are gathered in a Society Hill living room full of antique furniture and bright Impressionist paintings. They’ve come to an information session held to hype interest in the Revolution School a full summer before open enrollment begins. Moore, dressed in a loose-fitting gray outfit with a name tag attached, is handing out note cards that ask attendees to “share your aspirations for high school.” When the parents settle in with paper plates of Pure Fare — the gluten-free restaurant catering the info session — Moore, ever in motion, skips introductions and asks everyone to turn toward the television for a bit of inspiration.
Photographs flash on the screen: a smartphone followed by an antique phone; a car from today, then a horse and buggy from 150 years ago; a modern classroom, then … well, an early-1900s classroom that’s eerily similar to today, with kids seated at desks facing a teacher standing in front of a board. The video — produced by a corporate-funded education venture called EdCycle — pulls back. The pictures are faux courtroom exhibits being presented by a prosecutor to a judge and a jury. School itself is on trial, it turns out, and the rap sheet doesn’t look good. “Turning millions of people into robots” is one charge. “Killing creativity and individuality” and “intellectually abusive” are two more. The litany of misdeeds gets compiled by the prosecutor, who builds his case for the “educational malpractice” of modern-day schooling.
The brokenness of the education system is a familiar refrain in Philly, and yet, with a handful of exceptions (see “19 Philly-Area Schools Rethinking Education in Big Ways and Small” for some examples of a little progress), it’s remarkable how scant change has been. We live in a supposed golden age of innovation, with digital technology disrupting human existence at unprecedented velocities. Somehow, the futurists can’t crack education, though. Smartboards and iPads haven’t been the game-changers they were supposed to be. Vouchers and charters — whether you believe they’re toxic or a panacea — are reinventing the market but not the classroom. Whether public, private or charter, school is much like it was for our grandparents: Students migrate from room to room, passively absorbing instructors’ commands and, if we’re lucky, becoming inspired enough to finish their homework.
Cognitive dissonance settles in when we imagine something else. “Our biggest issue is communication and narrative,” Moore tells me, drawing a business analogy. “One of the really challenging aspects of selling a school is that it’s a product almost everyone is familiar with. But parents’ opinions of that product are 20 or more years old.”
In other words, the societal image of school remains a force to be reckoned with in spite of the collective wisdom that education needs a hard shake-up. Teachers grading pupils, handing out report cards, and doing it over and over again is a circadian rhythm we’ve all experienced. It’s hard to let that shared history go.
Moore is trying to clear that hurdle with the audience tonight. “Our aspiration for high school is a revolutionary experience,” she says after the video. “An adventure that feeds curiosity and creativity and evokes passion and purpose. A community where we recognize diversity at the heart of our perspective. A structure built to allow teachers to thrive and share in the joy of the journey. We will need to live John Dewey’s insightful and timeless words. … ”
Moore began thinking radically about education a decade ago. She grew up mostly going to public schools outside Harrisburg (the exception was a stint in Germany, where she attended a nontraditional elementary school while her father was working for DuPont) before studying accounting and German at the University of Delaware. But a few things changed in adulthood. Not long after moving to Philadelphia 16 years ago, she began sending her son, Anthony, to the Philadelphia School in Fitler Square. It’s an example (at the K-8 level) of the same type of progressive, project-based education that Moore is advertising at the Revolution School. (A recent TPS middle-school project on pre-colonization and the early Americas offers a window in. During weekly trips to the pine plantation at the Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education, small groups of teenagers made maps, built substantial forts and resolved land disputes — each activity leading into more traditional subjects like geometry, geography and literature. Throughout the three-month-long endeavor, kids journaled on their social and intellectual journey.)
Impressed by her kids’ development at TPS (where she got involved and eventually became board chair) and reflecting on her own career, Moore began to put together the pieces of what kinds of education were meaningful to her. Most valuable were skills she gleaned from interactions with curious minds like Parrish, who inspired her to go further than a textbook assignment ever could.
That, she says, is her “personal motivation” in starting the school. “I feel there’s a whole version of education that would have prepared me much better,” she says. “I’m truly a lover of Philadelphia, and if we can do this, it will be part of a contribution to the city. We have a seed that was planted in the Philadelphia School, an anchor in a way that a lot of places don’t.”
All sorts of schools are promoting the virtues of progressive education as part of their curricula these days, and some schools are even comparable in philosophy to TPS, such as the Jubilee School in West Philly and Project Learn in Mount Airy. But those three options don’t go past eighth grade, and there’s a lack of truly progressive high schools overall. The choices end at eighth grade for just about every progressive school in the city. What makes the Revolution School so groundbreaking is the idea that this style of education can succeed right up until college.
But that’s more controversial than you’d think. Even in this room full of families predisposed to progressive models — almost every parent at the info session has a child who’s gone to TPS — there’s resistance. Noelle Kellich, a longtime teacher at TPS and the “head of teaching and learning” at the Revolution School (essentially the principal), explains why to me later.
“What some families think is that the Philadelphia School” — or a similar progressive program — “has been a lovely, wonderful place and has served their kids in all the ways they’d hoped,” Kellich says. But when it comes to high school, parental attitudes shift about what’s right for their kids. “Maybe they need something less caring, less safe, less in tune with them. Something more dehumanizing, so that they can learn to do it, learn to survive.”
Moore leaves time for questions. The conversation inevitably turns toward college. The Revolution School won’t offer AP classes, which sounds all well and good in theory — until a kid gets a rejection letter from Yale. “We believe colleges will be really excited to accept students from a school that has the courage to do this,” says Moore, who points to the University of Chicago’s 2018 decision to make the SAT and ACT optional for applicants.
Later, in private, Moore is candid about how difficult it is to break the educational model we all know.
“Some of the challenge comes in resisting the temptation to build a school in the fashion that people think of as a school,” she says. But she’s determined. “One, that’s expensive, and two, that’s isolating. It doesn’t take advantage of what the city has to offer.”
It’s late July, and after having considered a dozen different rental options in Center City, Moore and Henry Fairfax, the Revolution School’s head of school, are looking at a space for sale at 25 South Van Pelt Street. They make a formidable duo, with Moore dressed in one of her zippy business outfits and Fairfax probing the realtor about air rights. He’s six-foot-four to her five-foot-five, and the building dwarfs them both. It’s a 14,000-square-foot brick fortress hiding in plain sight between 21st and 22nd streets, surrounded by surface parking lots, the Mütter Museum, and the First Unitarian Church.
While they retain a degree of flexibility on the location, the team behind the Revolution School is dead set on being in Center City. “We are a place-based school, which means that kids will be outside the walls of the classroom regularly — not once a month, not a special field trip — partnering with institutions,” Kellich explains later. “We want kids getting out there, mucking it up a bit.”
Inside, the building is a pile of rubble, offering a blank canvas for the Revolution School to make its own. The owner — a smiling, tanned older man with a cigarette in his mouth — won’t give an exact price point, and eventually Moore and her team decide it’s not the right option for them. As with any start-up, the ability to stay nimble could be key, so a rental makes more sense.
“We need to form our character before deciding where the walls are going to go,” she says.
Lack of building notwithstanding, the nuts-and-bolts aspects of the Revolution School are largely in place. It has filed for 501(c)3 status and is a permanent legal entity under the auspices of the Urban Affairs Coalition. Employees like Kellich and Fairfax are receiving salaries and benefits more than a year before opening. Around 90 percent of the start-up money has come from Moore, supplemented by some private individuals. And a financial plan, largely developed by Moore, has been put in motion for the first year. The Revolution School will begin with a class of at least 30 ninth-graders and four instructors. (Teacher pay will be substantially higher than what we’re used to; “Teachers need to be able to afford to send their kids here,” Moore says.) It will then successively add one class each year, along with instructors (at no more than a 10-to-one ratio with students), until it’s a fully formed high school.
Although the tuition will be north of $20,000, Moore has developed a sliding-scale formula that she believes will make the school accessible to students of all income levels. (Most families will pay 10 percent of their pre-tax income, with bottom- and top-end caps.) The Revolution School is broadcasting a commitment not only to racial but also to socioeconomic diversity. Part of the way the school intends to save on costs is the light footprint it will have, using the city — its libraries, green spaces, experts and museums — as its toolbox.
If it all sounds somewhat vague, Moore insists that’s intentional. “If we want to live up to being a school that’s truly progressive, it has to be a living and breathing thing,” she says. “The first class of students is going to play a big role in defining what this could be.”
But even a year before opening, some educators bristle at the Revolution School’s lack of definition and lofty ambitions. “Their website is really uninformative,” says Karel Kilimnik, co-founder of the Alliance for Philadelphia Public Schools and a longtime teacher in the city. That website — a landing page that as of late August was full of inspirational quotes — puts little flesh on the bone. “If you go to the Revolution School, what do you do, spin around all day? Study the Russian Revolution? It’s a name with no substance,” says Kilimnik. “Teachers have been doing ‘project-based learning’ for years. We didn’t market it, but now somebody has made it into a product and is selling it as a curriculum.”
Recruiting families to a school with no name recognition, no building, and little semblance to what we think of when we think of school is a hard sell. But the climate of dissatisfaction around education these days makes it a worthy gambit. Between kindergarten and 12th grade, public-school students in Pennsylvania take, on average, 112 standardized tests with numbingly similar names: PSSA, PASA, NAEP. … There’s no doubt parents and pupils are eager for something different.
“What you learn is that these kids have all been part of a transactional system,” says Fairfax. “We need to take the educational experience from transactional to transformational.”
Fairfax, a youthful 38-year-old, is chock-full of such aphorisms, picked up over his 15 years as an educator at independent schools. He also favors the kind of coachspeak one absorbs playing college basketball at Drexel. Over the course of the past three months, he and Kellich have visited more than a dozen potential feeder schools; they plan to reach 100 living rooms by the end of 2018. “We need to get into homes and recruit, Coach K-style,” Fairfax says.
Without students or a building in place, Gina Moore is betting on the collective reputation of the Revolution School’s leadership to garner buy-in from parents. Prior to joining the school this past summer, Fairfax was a vice president at Girard College; before that, he was director of admissions at the Haverford School on the Main Line. After years on the inside of institutions, nudging reforms ahead slowly, Fairfax decided to make a leap into the unknown. “It’s really hard to move a dinosaur,” he says.
It’s a sentiment shared by each member of the Revolution School team. Jane Shore, the team’s quantitative mind, spent the past decade working at Educational Testing Service — the folks who mastermind the multiple-choice bubbles on the SAT. “My experience at ETS was that we were rarely, if ever, touching the ground, looking locally at our impact,” Shore says. Her role is to monitor the latest research on neurodiversity — the way different students learn — and ensure that the free-form curriculum of the Revolution School remains guided by science, if not the usual statistical outcomes.
Then there’s the head of mission, Tom McManus, who until recently was the high-school principal at the Mid-Pacific Institute in Honolulu, a school that’s earned national acclaim for its progressive approach. Moore recruited McManus, who recently was featured in a book called What School Could Be that’s a sort of reverse Waiting for Superman — a celebration of schools doing nontraditional education right all over the country. McManus is a true believer in the potential for progressive education to take hold here, too.
“In places like Silicon Valley and even in Hawaii, if you’re not in the innovation game within education, the community is telling you to get with it,” he says. “This is happening at a rapid pace. Frankly, it’s not happening as quickly in Philly, but there is a community here that needs these sorts of options as well.”
American education wasn’t always so standardized. It wasn’t until the late 19th century’s wave of mass industrialization that the one-room schoolhouse went away and we began to turn education into a Foucault fever dream in which pupils go in and metrics come out: test scores, graduation rates, college attainment.
Slowly, though, that paradigm seems to be unraveling. Penn’s school of education now has a teacher certificate for project- based learning. Meanwhile, there are a growing number of nontraditional elementary schools in the city, all potential feeders to the Revolution School. Progressive education is a lot sexier than it used to be.
“When my kids started going to TPS 15 years ago, the school was selective, but not what it is today,” says Jennifer Rice, former board chair at TPS. (Moore preceded her as chair.) “Now, it’s ‘the’ school.”
Aside from the raised eyebrows its progressive approach will engender in some parents, the Revolution School will also need to counter the narrative — which will inevitably emerge — that it’s nothing more than an oasis for children of the city’s elite. “Do I sometimes worry about our financing and think, oh no, what if I build a school for rich kids? Yes, I lose sleep over that,” says Kellich. There will be rich kids, of course, but as is true for the Philadelphia School, hitting benchmarks for socioeconomic and racial diversity is central to the plan.
The Revolution School is aiming to be more than just a symbol of what high school can be, a shining city upon a hill. It’s also meant to be a think tank for progressive educators all over the city. It could be the start of a broader movement that brings progressive education solidly into the mainstream.
“If we do it right, we’ll impact all the kids in all directions and the city itself,” says Kellich, who taught in public schools for a number of years. “If that story gets told over and over, I hope people will come and say, ‘Hey, I want to see how you’re doing it.’ And we’ll say yes!”
As with any start-up, getting traction is a challenge. The school was turned down for the one grant it’s applied for, and meetings Moore has had with self-styled disrupters who are throwing money into charter schools haven’t yet borne any fruit. Meanwhile, some people have been irked by the raised fist (of a kid clutching a bunch of colored pencils) prominently displayed on the school’s website. As much as people are angry with the education system today, there’s still a conservatism that reigns over attempts to change it — the same old story in Philly.
Frankly, Moore likes that the school is generating visceral reactions. Revolutions don’t happen quietly. If the founders need to change the website down the road, so be it. The one thing she has no plans to lose is the John Dewey quote that figures prominently: “Give students something to do, not something to learn; and the doing is of such a nature as to demand thinking; learning naturally results.”

What is a POS System?
A point of sale (POS) system allows businesses to process transactions, track sales, and more. POS systems essentially function as cash registers, but with better technology and tracking. Modern point of sale systems have an even broader range of capabilities, from inventory tracking to sales reports and much more.
Restaurant point of sale software can often handle bookings, arrange seating, collect and track customer information, and more. There are plenty of point of sale options for restaurants, so be sure to research the best one for your restaurant’s needs before committing to a specific system.

If your restaurant has the money and wants one of the best and most comprehensive POS systems, however, Upserve is a worthy investment.
  TouchBistro
TouchBistro is by far the best iPad POS system for restaurants. Made specifically for restaurants, TouchBistro offers lots of great restaurant-specific features. TouchBistro has an easy-to-use, intuitive interface, but it also comes with 24/7 support and training so that employees can easily manage it.   Lightspeed
Lightspeed is another great option that makes it easy to streamline the processes of your restaurant. It has the most third-party integrations available, with 60 integrated partners listed on their website. This means that if you have another software that you love, like scheduling software, you can easily integrate it with your Lightspeed POS system to keep everything in one place.
Because of all the possible integrations, Lightspeed has plenty of possible tools and features, so if one that’s important to your business isn’t included, you can add it in. That being said, there is a good range of useful tools already included.

Verdict
Lightspeed is one of the best restaurant POS systems available, with plenty of features and even more third-party integrations to be added on. With all the available integrations, Lightspeed can do almost anything your restaurant may need. The only concern is the added cost of those integrations, so things may get pricey.
  Square
Square is one of the most popular restaurant POS systems, and it’s frequently used in coffee shops and other counter service restaurants. It has plenty of features and a simple, intuitive design that is easy to use. Square is on the more affordable end of the best restaurant POS systems, although their system does charge 2.6% for every transaction.
Square works in a variety of industries, but they also have a specific restaurant POS system that is scalable for quick-serve restaurants through to full-scale operations. It has a wide range of general and restaurant-specific features that can streamline processes at your restaurant business.

Plenty of features and other possible integrations
Cons:

Some features are not included and must be purchased to add on
Verdict
Square POS is one of the most popular point of sale systems for restaurants and other businesses, and for good reason. It is easy to use, on the more affordable end, and has tons of great tools. Square is most popular among quick-serve restaurants, but it is scalable to fit larger operations as well.
  Toast
Toast is a popular and efficient restaurant POS system with various other features as well. Unlike TouchBistro, Toast operates on Android technology and is not compatible with iOS. Toast fits a wide range of venues, from coffee shops to upscale restaurants to online orders, so it’s great for businesses with various service offerings or those looking to expand.

Verdict
Toast is a great POS system that is flexible for all sorts of restaurants, from casual to fine dining and coffee shops to nightclubs. Its offline mode is a great feature in case of power or WiFi issues – the only big drawback is that you’ll have to purchase their POS hardware. If you’re already on the market for those tools, however, Toast is a good choice.
  ShopKeep
ShopKeep is another great option for restaurants in need of a point of sale system. This restaurant POS software is available as a single iPad POS system or as a full restaurant system. ShopKeep has plenty of great features, albeit not as many as some of the other systems on this list.
One of the best things about ShopKeep is that it’s incredibly mobile-friendly, working with Apple iPads and Android tablets, as well as mobile phones or ShopKeep’s own register hardware. This restaurant POS makes it easy to build email marketing lists by collecting emails at checkout, and it integrates with MailChimp to add to your email list.
ShopKeep Features:
Easy to use POS software
Inventory tracking
Reporting and analytics
Staff scheduling and clock
Loyalty program
Email marketing integration

Cons:
Doesn’t have quite as many features as other options
Verdict
ShopKeep is a great option, especially for those on a budget – the pricing isn’t publicly listed, but former prices were lower than competing POS systems. It has an assortment of useful features, and it works well with Apple, Android, or their own hardware. ShopKeep is also scalable, so it’s great for quick serve counters or full restaurants.
  Cake
Cake offers custom solutions, so it can be scaled to fit any restaurant size or style. This POS system has a lot to offer, so while it’s more expensive than some others, it can integrate a wider range of processes for your restaurant. For instance, it can double as your reservation system as well, cutting out the cost of another software or service.
Cake is easy to learn to use, especially with training for owners and employees and 24/7 customer support. They have specific package options for quick serve, full service restaurants, and bars and pubs. Everything is still customizable however, so you can scale their offerings to fit your business.
Cake Features:

Integrations
24/7 support

Cons:
Expensive
Verdict
Cake is a good option for those looking for lots of features all in one software. This restaurant POS system is intuitively designed with lots of easy to use tools that can help streamline your business. You’ll need Cake hardware, but the company allows you to lease it rather than buy a large amount of equipment up front. If you have the money and the need for many tools, Cake is a great POS for restaurants.
  Revel Systems
Revel Systems is a full service restaurant POS system with lots of great tools. It manages more than just point of sale transactions, and can handle various aspects of your restaurant business all on one platform. This cloud-based iPad POS software is made for restaurants, and has specific packages and plans for bars, breweries, wineries, nightclubs, and even pizza shops.

Online orders and delivery features surpass others
Cons:
Expensive
Difficult set up
Verdict
Revel Systems is a great option with a lot of features for any restaurant looking for a point of sale software that can integrate various other tools and processes. Their enterprise management feature is great for chains or multi-location restaurants, because you can track both separately and together. The only big drawback is the price, which is on the expensive end of our list. Set up can also be difficult, but with dedicated customer service on your side it won’t be too hard to figure out.
  Lavu
Lavu is another good iPad POS system for restaurants. It can manage a host of tools aside from just point of sale software, including a great employee onboarding and training feature that many competitors lack. With Lavu, you can streamline the process of training new hires and take on many other tasks on one system.
Lavu can handle processes relating to POS, labor, menus, inventory, and more. Their corresponding app makes it easy to check reports while you’re on the go, and it can be accessed from your smartphone. The reports and analytics are customizable to show what matters most to your business. Lavu can be scaled to fit any restaurant business.
Lavu Features:
Scalable POS
Training and onboarding

Plenty of features available
Cons:
Expensive hardware
Reports of software bugs
Verdict
Lavu is a good comprehensive restaurant POS software. It’s not the top choice, but it has plenty of great features available and it works well. The biggest drawback is that you have to purchase their hardware, which can get pricey. It does have a great employee onboarding feature, however, which can ease a difficult but necessary task for managers.
How To Choose a Restaurant POS System
There are seemingly endless point of sale systems out there today, and many claim to offer the same features and quality of services. It’s hard to weed out the best restaurant POS systems from others that will only make running your business more difficult.
Each of the options on our list are top-rated and loved by restaurants around the world, but choosing between them presents an issue too. Consider the following when choosing a restaurant POS system.
  Features Offered
The features offered by each restaurant POS system should be your first consideration. After all, you’re buying a point of sale software for the tools it provides.
Today, the best POS systems don’t just handle transactions, but also offer a host of other features. Some common tools include the following:
Inventory management: Track orders and ingredients so that buying is simplified
Table management: Map out seating arrangements and create waitlists
Staff management: Can include scheduling, a time clock to punch, or employee performance
Menu management: Change menu items easily
Billing: Most offer various payment methods
CRM: Collects customer information to add to email lists, track customer purchases and engagment
Loyalty programs: Track loyal customers and offer incentives
Payroll management: Track and implement payroll
Reporting and analytics: Collect data and offer insights on business practices and where to improve
Online ordering and delivery: Track and manage online orders
Integrations: Integrate with other software to streamline restaurant processes
Some restaurant POS systems may offer some, a few, all, or even more than just these features – these are just some common ones we’ve seen.
When choosing a POS system for your restaurant, consider what tools you actually need and will use. There’s no use paying extra for staff management if you’re going to continue to use your old system. Think about what your restaurant business really needs and what would best streamline your processes.
  Service Style
What style of service does your restaurant provide? Most of the best POS systems are flexible and scalable to fit any size and style of restaurant, but look for one that best matches your style.
Service styles include quick serve, counter service, full service, and so on. A coffee shop with one register can benefit from a different POS system than a full service seated restaurant. Smaller restaurants may not need the same tools as larger ones, or it may not be worth the added cost to pay for extra features.
Some POS systems are better fits for quick serve businesses, like the iPad POS systems. Others may be better for full service restaurants, bars, and so on. Some of the best options on our list offer packages for specific types of restaurants to fit their exact service offerings and needs. Keep your style of service in mind when purchasing a POS system for your restaurant.
  Your Customers
Who are your customers? What will make patronizing your restaurant easier and more enjoyable for them? The customer always comes first, so consider the customer experience when choosing a restaurant point of sale system.
Older customers may not be as comfortable signing or tipping on an iPad based POS system. Younger customers will likely be more in tune with technology based options. Some people may have more or less trouble with contactless payment, tablets, and so on. Customers with disabilities may also face difficulties with some systems.
On the other hand, if you run an upscale restaurant, your guests may not enjoy the look of tableside ordering with an iPad. Consider your target demographic and what they’d like to see in your restaurant. If everything is kept on the back end, it doesn’t matter much, but if they have to interact with your system then you should consider how they’d prefer to go through ordering and payment processes.
  Restaurant Size and Growth Opportunities
Consider the size of your restaurant and how it may grow over time with your POS system. A larger restaurant will require more technology and likely more hardware than a smaller one. Size may also factor into the features that are most useful and important to you.
All of the POS systems on our list are scalable, so it is possible that they can grow with your restaurant. Some are better equipped for growth than others, however, and if opening a second location is a possibility then you definitely need to consider growth options.
  Budget
As always, budget is an important factor. Some systems may have low starting costs, but if the features you want cost extra then it may add up quickly. Be sure to research pricing for any POS system before making a commitment.
  Restaurant Point of Sale FAQ
Your restaurant’s point of sale software is an important purchase for your business. Not only is it an investment, but it also will affect how your staff and customers interact with your restaurant. Many restaurant POS systems come with tools that can help to streamline various processes, so finding the right one is vital. Find all the answers you need here on Restaurant Clicks.
Does my restaurant need a point of sale system?
All restaurants need some way of completing customer transactions. Some old school restaurants still use cash only registers, but most have upgraded to a POS system or register system that takes credit cards and other payment options.
There are options other than a full service, online POS system, but most modern restaurants use some kind of POS software. Today, the best restaurant POS systems work incredibly well and can seamlessly take care of transactions, track sales, and track other things like inventory through each purchase.
While there are other options, we would say that yes: your restaurant needs a point of sale system. The ones on this list are your best options based on performance and the many integrated tools.
What are the best POS features?
At the end of the day, the best point of sale features are the ones that best fit your restaurant’s needs. Every restaurant is different, so one POS system may be the best option for one restaurant but not another.
The most important feature that all restaurants will probably need is an easy to use POS software that makes it easy to cash out customer transactions. Most point of sale systems come with their own hardware like card readers, tablets, and cash drawers. Make sure your POS system of choice fits your restaurants needs in terms of customer transactions, since that is its primary use.
Some of the most common and useful features for POS systems also include things like inventory tracking and reports and analytics. Since inventory is directly affected by sales, it makes sense that a restaurant POS system could track both at once. Reports and analytics will help you see what’s selling, what isn’t, and other useful information to improve the profitability of your restaurant.
Otherwise, look for features that matter to your restaurant. A full service restaurant will benefit from table management, while a quick serve or counter service restaurant may not need that tool. If accounting isn’t your strong suit, look for a restaurant POS that can track sales and integrate with an accounting software like QuickBooks.
Another great tool to look for, from a marketing perspective, is CRM or other features that can help to track customer information like names, email addresses, and phone numbers. Many restaurant POS systems offer paperless receipts via text or email and collect customer information this way. Collecting this information makes it easy to follow up with customers to ask for reviews, offer promotions, and more.
What are the different types of POS systems for restaurants?
There are various types of POS systems for restaurants as well as different hardware and different features.
On-site POS systems are older models that typically run on a server based in your restaurant. These are bulkier than those on our list and generally don’t come with continuing customer support from the manufacturer.
Cloud-based POS systems are the preferred, more modern option with better technology. They allow you to access data about your restaurant remotely, and the info is stored on a server owned by the company you choose to buy POS software from. This allows for more regular updates to the technology and support from the POS company.
Many cloud-based POS systems offer mobile point of sale technology as well, like the various iPad point of sale systems on our list. These have the same benefits of other cloud-based POS software, but allow for better mobility, as you can use a mobile tablet like an iPad or a smartphone. Often, these have the added benefit of tableside ordering where the server can enter the order directly on the mobile device while customers order. Mobile POS systems are great for many businesses, but aren’t necessarily the right fit for all restaurants.
Another option is a self-service POS system, with customer kiosks. These are popular among quick service restaurants that allow customers to customize their orders, like build-your-own salad bars. Self-service is not the best option for all restaurants, but it is a great choice for certain businesses.
Do I need to buy POS hardware as well?
Yes, you’ll need to buy some point of sale hardware along with a POS system software. Some POS systems require that you buy their specific hardware to use their services. Others may allow you to use devices like iPads or smartphones.
Even if you don’t have to buy the complete set of POS hardware from a specific POS system, you’ll probably have to buy some. You’ll need items like card readers, scanners, or cash drawers no matter what POS software you choose.
Be sure to read the details about your restaurant POS system of choice to figure out how the hardware side works and what you’ll need to purchase to get started. Most have dedicated customer service lines that can help you navigate the start up process with their specific system.
  Final Thoughts
Every restaurant needs some kind of cash register, but most modern businesses use POS systems nowadays. Choose from the best restaurant POS systems to streamline your restaurant’s sales as well as other processes!re
