There's some differences, the take I do is book smart and mostly friendly easygoing, but a social inept

(easy example she gets naked because it's her way to regulate her body temperature, forgetting dress after or simply living without thinking "oh yeah i should be ashamed" since her thought is "i got naked because its too hot! Some people chew ice, I do this is not bad, but I'll dress if you want me too)

since she don't get between the lines or subtle ways to show affection

(yet is super empathic and can see if someone is sad or suffering)

(kinda also that's why she in the drawings hug, take hand, or jump into people, because her way is blunt, fully honest, I like you so I'll give you a lot of PDA, words of affirmation and full koala hugs(can't be bear hugs because smol),

since she saw almost all contact/talking as friendly, can get easily abused (like more than already a normal PC is)

So had to do some changes in the dynamics with the characters from the canon (like more protective take on the boys since well, she meet them all in a wacky kind of accident or bad luck from her),

since she is fully virgin and mostly have a friendly healthy take (from her mostly, because still can get mistreatment from characters like Whitney or bailey) but she don't see it as "they are mean" she take it as "they are grumpy, I'll bring them something later" (her limits blur more when is a friend that step on them, with a stranger can be more vocal(still polite) but with a friend becomes almost a shy plead (I give her sad puppy eyes power so don't get that bad for her)

The boys got a "different" way of treating her, being kinda soft oh her because puppy sad eyes and she is actually nice so, they protect her more and keep an eye on her choco adventures (aka somehow almost dying/being kidnaped and coming back with a new friend)

Also have lore of why and how she ended in the bailey care, also why she is like that, yet can switch in a buried scary behavior (since just because someone is mostly friendly don't meant that they can't fight if they have too)

Tell me if you want to know more about her or the takes with the rest of the characters

YEAH LET'S GO!!!

Helen Hoang is my absolute #1 ride or die, anything she writes I'm here for forever. I do think that Kiss Quotient is the weakest of her books, which isn't shocking from a first novel, but the sex is solid and she got SIGNIFICANTLY better for the Bride Test and the Heart Principle. those were the best romances I read in 2023 and the competition is not close, Bride Test in particular is just a heap of fun.

Alexis Hall's A Lady for a Duke is also pretty excellent, just really dreamy trans woman historical romance with the most #woke and fuckable 19th century duke who ever lived. yes the duke gets over his alcoholism and laudanum addiction way too fast. yes there's an insane shoehorned Wickham-running-off-with-Lydia style plot at the end that comes out of nowhere and doesn't really make the story better. no there's no enough sex. but who cares? just have fun with it.

I also really really enjoyed Lauren Kung Jessen's Lunar Love but like... entirely because I was reading the protagonist, Olivia, as like a Rachel Bloom Crazy Ex-Girlfriend type who's so obsessed with the Chinese zodiac because she has an undiagnosed personality disorder. that's definitely not what the intent was but I think Olivia should have been allowed to be way MORE unhinged, tbh. I think Olivia should be allowed to kill.

as for the dishonorable mentions... god.

Tessa Bailey's Unfortunately Yours is ATROCIOUS. unbearable characters and dialogue that feels like listening to a garbage disposal and sex scenes that almost ruptured my spleen because I was laughing so hard. also the premise was just. very dumb. I Cannot Handle fake relationship books where the characters are stupid about it. the only part of it I like was the female protag's mom, a frigid evil milf who could keep me like a purse dog.

speaking of fake relationships, Chencia Higgins' book D'vaughn and Kris Plan a Wedding was also a huge letdown. the premise of two strangers having to fake a relationship on a reality tv show is good silly fun but Higgins just seemed like... DEEPLY uninterested in the reality tv aspect except as an excuse for how the characters met? when camera crew politely agreed not to film D'Vaughn coming out to her family, that was some bullshit. the whole book is just really sloppy, it's very disheartening that this is like THE #1 Black lesbian romance that I see recommended because it sucks and Black lesbians deserve soooo much better.

Kiss Her Once for Me by Alison Cochrun has been one of the hardest books to read because the protagonist/POV character is just soooo whiny and insufferable. she's supposed to be a very #relatable smol bean but god she was exhausting, I couldn't stand her.

Regarding people responding to the Gnarlrock scene between Imogen and Laudna by only focusing on how sad it makes Laudna, I have to wonder if it's another symptom of people ignoring what Laura Bailey does with her characters in favour of their own headcanons. There's a trend in fandom I've noticed, particularly in shipping spaces, that really "owo smol-bean"-ifies Imogen. Her problems exist not to drive her character forward and to give her conflict and development, but to be something Laudna can kiss and make better. So now that Imogen is having a (completely reasonable) issue with Laudna, people don't know how to reconcile that with the watered-down version of the character that exists in their heads.

I agree completely, and I'm grouping this with this other ask with which I also agree and then choosing extreme violence, after which I require that any further questions on this topic that aren't just "oh yeah makes sense" or whatever be both a. off anon and b. well-articulated with a reasoned argument and a thesis statement; anything else will be deleted.

Like, that's it in the end. How dare Laura's character be a independent being whose existence doesn't begin and end and fully center around someone else, whether it's her dead brother or a person with whom she's shipped? How dare she disagree with characters people like more? How dare she exercise any measure of agency that conflicts with the fandom's stupid-ass desires?

How dare Vex get married without Vax there even as he started his own relationship first and actively encouraged her to pursue her own romantic interests with her eventual husband? How dare she continue to live out her remaining 150 years of life without him and experience joy?

How dare Jester react positively when the person she'd indicated interest in reciprocated? How dare she choose a life of ongoing adventure and a home near her beloved mother instead of living as a housewife in a faraway foreign city where her god is illegal? How dare she not read the minds of the people who have crushes on her and know how they feel and respond accordingly?

How dare Imogen focus on her own, lifelong, painful problem and the loss of a potential solution instead of dropping everything and focusing on Laudna's problems instead? How dare she feel upset about this? How dare she get in the way of my fabricated picture of perfect girlfriends who have zero problems or obstacles?

How dare this woman be angry? How dare this woman have feelings I don't share about the situation? How dare this woman display even a shred of self-interest that isn't completely in service to someone else's goals? How dare that dumb bitch do what she wants and not what I want?

I deleted an ask this morning that was like "it feels like you're invalidating people who are sympathetic towards Laudna" like first off I'm specifically calling out people who are sympathetic towards Laudna and not towards Imogen which is absolutely crucial context and second of all yeah. I do not think you're valid. That's the fucking point. You're not entitled to my validation, and you don't have it. If you act like this? I think your opinions are garbage. If you need my agreement to feel valid, that's extremely not my problem (and, honestly, you're just giving me more proof as my whole point here is "sometimes people disagree with you and that is entirely their right and if you think the mere existence of disagreement is invalidating, you suck so fucking much.") Develop a sense of inherent self worth and/or develop better opinions, and either way, leave me out of it.
