my pocket altar to Amphitrite
this is probably the only time I’ll post photos of a full altar and that’s because I felt called to share. Amphitrite isn’t as well known as other deities of the Greek pantheon so I think sharing is caring in this instance. The only thing that isn’t pictured is the divination tool I use to speak with the Lady Amphitrite.

I repurposed an altoids tin for this pocket altar. I energetically cleansed it and placed items that I felt called by Amphitrite to put inside. I have some shells I collected from the beach, sand mixed with sea salt, an aquamarine crystal, a devotional candle, small incense sticks and a doily as an altar cloth.
I also decorated the inside with some sea imagery and I made a small paper standee to act as a stand in for a statue/figure.

I picked up a small table today that I'm going to use as an altar for Lord Haides. It's really nice, has a bit of wear from the previous owners (up-cycled from Facebook marketplace), but I'm confident that it's perfect. There's not much energy to it, so it will be easy to cleanse and consecrate. I'm really excited to finally devote a space only* to Lord Haides.
*: I've had to share spaces in the past, and I don't really like doing that :<

Altar update
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here are some of the things on it this time of year :)
The woodburning is of the Dagda's harp, as he is my primary deity. I made this a few years ago and it cycles on and off my altar. In front of it i have some mahogany obsidian, a candle, and an acorn.
Next to that is a muskrat skull sitting on top of a river stone, the large rock in front of it is a hagstone. I positioned it in a way that i can look through one of the holes in the stone to see the skull.
In the bottom right corner is a turtle skull resting on top of fossilized coral.
In the bottom left is a sea lion vertebrae i found recently and wanted to honor and work with. The location and other bones nearby make me fairly sure it is from a sea lion, and a professor at my college confirmed it for me.
The teeth near the geode are a bit of a mystery to me. I helped clean and pack up a very old witch's apartment to move her into assisted living. She gave me a box of items as thanks, the teeth in a little bag among them. I get extremely good vibes from the teeth, so they stay for now!
I can guarantee that all items on the altar were either found by me, gifted to me, or purchased from extremely reliable ethical sources- usually my personal friends. I take that very seriously in my practice.
Let me know if you have questions :)

🕯️ Build Your Altar with Purpose — Elemental Layout for Everyday Magic 🌿
Your altar is more than decoration. It’s a living reflection of your energy, your path, and your connection to the unseen. Whether you’re a seasoned witch or just starting your journey, aligning your altar with the five classical elements can help ground your intentions and deepen your practice.
This elemental layout is simple, adaptable, and rooted in both tradition and intuition. Use what you already have, tools don’t need to be expensive or elaborate to be powerful. Nature gives freely, and your intent is always your strongest magic.
✨ Layout Overview:
• Center — Spirit
This is the heart of your altar. Place a candle, deity symbol, or sacred object that represents your higher self or divine connection. It holds space for your spiritual essence and unites all other elements.
• Left — Water 💧
A bowl of water, a chalice, shells, or moon-charged items work well here. Water governs emotion, intuition, healing, and reflection. Let it ripple gently through your space.
• Right — Fire 🔥
A candle, wand, or even a sunstone can hold fire’s place. Fire brings passion, drive, transformation, and protection. It lights the path and burns away stagnation.
• Top — Air 🌬️
Represent air with incense, feathers, bells, or written words. Air rules the mind, thoughts, communication, and clarity. Let it inspire your breath and intentions.
• Bottom — Earth 🌍
Ground your altar with crystals, salt, stones, or dried herbs. Earth gives structure, abundance, patience, and stability. It roots your ritual and supports lasting growth.
🔄 Tips to Make It Yours:
• Swap tools seasonally, Celebrate the sabbats or shifts in your life with items that reflect the moment.
• Use what calls to you , A leaf can be as sacred as a gemstone. Trust your intuition.
• Cleanse regularly, A gentle smoke cleanse or moon bath keeps your altar energetically clear.
• Revisit your intent, Let your altar evolve as you do.
🧿 Your altar is your mirror. Let it speak your truth.

Practical Craft: Setting Up an Altar
So, you've decided to set up an altar or sacred space for your practice. That's great! An altar can be a wonderful space for witchcraft, spirit work, and more.
But where to start?
If you look up pictures of altars online, such as on Tumblr or Instagram, you're likely to see lots of #aesthetic photos full of beautiful arrangements of lit candles, elaborate crystal grids, and expensive-looking statues. Not to mention all the bottles and herbs and incense and stones and bells and lights and tarot cards and oracle cards and and and...
It's a lot, to say the least. I'm one of those people who has a hard time accepting when things aren't totally perfect or up to "standards" (which may or may not continuously shift as I get closer to them, mind). If you're like me, creating an altar space might seem intimidating. You might ask yourself:
"What if it doesn't turn out right?"
"What if the spirit(s) this space is for don't like it?"
"How can I get all the materials that I have to have?"
"Why doesn't my altar look like those pretty pictures online?"
And, if you manage to make your space look that beautiful, you may even ask:
"Why isn't this altar working for me?"
Let's start from the top.
Check out my new post on Ko-Fi, currently exclusive for supporters! For a one-time payment as low as $1, you can receive early and extended access to my work. This one includes a preview of my personal working altar; I'll dive into the specifics of it in another post eventually.
