“If Tim Drake was meta, his ability would be shadow travel!”
“No, immortality!”
“No, shapeshifting!”
NO. NO. NO. HE WOULD BE SPIDER-MAN. FIGHT ME.
actual explanation:
All ‘weird’ behaviour he does? Spider things. Walk with me. Sleeping in the most random places, spider hibernation. Getting in on high building as a child, sticky. Bad eyesight (thats a personal hc), spiders are nearsighted. Really smart, although arachnids have brains that could literally fit on the head of a pin, the work of scientists suggests that they have capabilities we'd have no problem hailing as signs of intelligence if exhibited by animals with much larger brains. (I copied that off safari but my point stands)
Now, you’ve read that and you’re probably like “but, Connor, thats basically nothing, why are trying pushing spider-man! Tim for meta AU’s.” Well, my answer to that is: i don’t know. But lets compare Peter Parker and Tim Drake for a minute.
Tim:
Heavily shipped with his friends (Conner, Bart, Bernard, Cassie, the rest of the young justice98 line up)
Bi
Wears red
Photography as a hobby
Skateboards
Smart
Nerd
Two (+more) friends that wear red
Peter:
Heavily shipped with his friends/people he works with (Wade, Johnny, Harry, Ned, Harley, Mary Jane, Gwen Stacy, Felicia, Matt, Flash)
Queer coded/Bi
Wears red
Photography as a hobby
Skateboards
Smart
Nerd
Two (+ more) friends that wear red
See, basically the same person. “But Connor, when would Tim get bit by the spider, or are you just gonna say he was born with it.” Yes and no, i have no idea how meta powers work in dc, so we’re going with marvel mutants, stick with me.
Tim was born with a mutant (meta) gene, but it doesn’t awaken till he’s nine and gets bitten by the spider. The spider itself is a failed lab experiment from one of the rogues. He gets bit when he’s following batman and robin. It gets him sick and he doesn’t end up following them for a while because his body is changing. The robin (1 to 2) switch happens, Tim’s still in boarding school so he can’t follow them everyday anyways.
“If Tims robin, when does he become spider-man?”
I hc Tim as gender fluid, so he goes by arachnid. Anyways, he becomes that universe’s resident friendly neighbourhood arachnid when his red robin arch happens (AND HE STAYS AS ARACHNID, NO GOING BACK TO ROBIN SHIT!) Dick still tries (and fails) to get him to go to therapy, all that good stuff. He still meets Pru, Owen, and Z. They (minus Pru) dies. You know how the red robin arch goes. Explosion and losing spleens.
Now, this had derailed so much, but i’m going to derail it even more. Anita Fite is this worlds Deadpool, and Cissie King-Jones is this worlds Daredevil. Why is this? Because i said so, anyways this is how it works.
When being trained by her mother, Cissie gets into an accident, loses her sight, that goops/ooze things makes her “see” the world like Matt does. She proceeds to relearn archery with her disability, she becomes arrowette, then retires like in canon. But later on, she can’t just sit by and let everything happen. She goes to college and gets a law degree, she quits being an actresses. She opens a lawyer place thingy. But its not enough. So she dawns the mantle daredevil.
Anita Fite’s parents get kidnapped as an attempt to draw Empress out of hiding. She comes to get her parents back, but they get killed in the process. She gets nocked out, then when she wakes up she can regenerate and can’t die. She feels like she can’t go back to young justice so she takes up jobs as merc. Taking the name Deadpool.
Why did i decide to add them into why i think tim drake’s meta ability would be spiderman. This was because i was trying to get you guys to think about my team red! Tim, Cisse, & Anita. *insert evil laugh*
I will be drawing art for this later. Good day (do you guys want more of this, because i want more of it, and have to the one make it.)

Hey remember that brief period of time after no way home came out where everyone wanted Matt Murdock to be Peter Parker's dad? Yeah well I wrote a crack fic for that and Wade Wilson is there, have fun
Title: getting together for the kids
summary:
“You could…not be a single dad?” Peter asks.
“Oh yeah?” Matt smirks. “Who’s my wife in this scenario?"
Peter’s heart spikes and his breath catches as he bounces to his feet.
“No,” Matt says, “absolutely not, I know what you’re going to say, the answer is no, I won’t, this will never—”
“Mr. Murdock, he’s perfect!” Peter says, “I’m going to ask him right now!”
“Peter, no!”
Matt agrees to pretend to be Peter's dad for his freshmen orientation, Wade also agrees to pretend to be Peter's dad.

What's your opinion on Spideydevil/MattPeter/Spiderdevil/Mattpete (Matt Murdock x Peter Parker)?
If you haven't looked in to it i suggest you do. here are some fics I like all rated G or T. And Fan art.

If you seem to like them. Check out the tags: Spideydevil, MattPeter, Spider Devil or Mattpete. but they are a rarer pair so prepare for have almost no content. If you hate it alot please don't be like "Look at this person DUMB ship!!! Its dumb and will never work in the universe!!! What an Idiot for liking this ship!" it would most likely make me cry. (Not that I think you would be like that but more of it's a very unpopular ship that I won't tell people outside of tumblr I like).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Oh, I do ship spideydevil! Honestly, I low-key ship Peter with everyone (that I can stand, so, sorry, Wade! You were just too annoying to make the cut), but spideydevil is up there around the top of the list specifically because they have such a long history together (which The Spider-Man Fan Club (Hell's Kitchen Chapter) sorta kinda barely touches on. Yes, I'm using your ask for self-promo, deal lmao. Here's the tumblr version, too. Although that fic is Gen, as it says on the tin. It's wouldn't be a bad thing anyway, but I don't want anyone thinking I... tricked them? Or something?) Like Peter said that one time they had severe mental break downs at the same time: they may not be best friends, but they're the closest thing to kindred spirits.
I get it, though, I always get embarrassed when it comes to talking about my non-canon ships, even on tumblr, even the popular ones, so I barely do that. I actually have to confess that I've read all the fics you just recced me (and have one of them bookmarked lol)... several times. As you said, little content. So now it's my turn! Have you read Deadpool vs Gambit #1? It's where that panel of Peter and Matt talking about going antiquing that's gone around tumblr is from, and the interactions between the two are golden. They have a pupusa place they go to all the time, apparently. Or went to. @Marvel let them know each other's ids again.
Thank you a lot for talking to me!
(Also, I feel kinda targeted with that image about Spider-Man fans. I'm the person with the mask, only I don't care about the Raimi and Webb movies, just the comics. Not to dump on anyone who likes the m/cu version of Peter, it just fills me with boiling rage, which is a perfectly normal and healthy reaction, of course.)

Weather the Storm
Chapter One - Taken Aback
Ezra (Prospect) x f!reader (no y/n) 1861 Lighthouse au
Written in the third person, so I guess you could say Ezra x OC? but she isn’t physically described or named at any point
Rated: E (just the whole story)
Prologue - Lay of the Land // Masterlist // Chapter Two: Hand Over Fist
Tumblr media
Ezra travelled with the tides, let the sea carry him where it willed and never stayed long. The lighthouse keeper was the opposite. Where he moved she stood firm, defying the waves and the tide as if carved from the cliff herself. They’re drawn together, but opposing forces so strong are always destined to cause a storm.
Summary: In search of a place to stay Ezra meets the Lighthouse Keeper. Stuck together for the night by the tide she must quickly work out whether she can trust him enough to let him stay.
Warnings: Language, a lil violence, an even liler bit of sexual tension, some victorian sexism (smut will come)
Wordcount: 3700
Note: Thanks to @danniburgh who I throw ideas at left right and centre to figure stuff out! Turns out I can’t write short things? Either way I’m glad I decided to chapter this so I didn’t go totally bananas. Next one should be up in a week! Prepare for yearning.
~~~~~~~~~
Spring was doing what spring always did by the sea. Vehemently refusing to start. Sometimes a crack in the clouds let a beat of sun through warming the lighthouse keeper's skin and for just a second teased what could be. But as ever, it shyly retreated back behind the grey.
Unable to rest until dawn broke and tinted the sky pink, she had slept through most of the day. When she finally shook off the exhaustion from work the night before, there had been just enough blue in the sky to make a sailor a pair of trousers, enough to entice her into moving. So, she had thrown on her chemise for some illusion of modesty, not that anyone could see her, and gone for a swim.
Bracing was one word for it, fucking baltic was more appropriate. There was nothing quite like it. The way it made her heart pound, made her gasp as she swam, circling the small island, it made her feel alive. There was always a risk of a current pulling her out, a risk she knew all too well. But she knew the water, knew every dip and whirlpool well enough to recognise when they should be avoided. Keeping an eye on the sun she let the incoming tide tug her gently back to the shoreline. In only a few hours she'd have to ascend the steps and light the light.
From her position in the water, she spotted a figure, wading across the causeway, getting pulled to and fro by the tug of the tides, but determinedly heading for the island. She'd let the captain of The Mistress know her room was available a couple days ago and he hadn't sent trouble her way so far. Even so a jolt of unease struck at the thought of being trapped with the stranger until the sea went out. The little rowing boat wouldn't be much good with the storm that was now threatening to roll in. Cursing quietly to herself and suddenly very grateful she’d thrown on even a thin layer, she struck out towards him.
Clambering inelegantly back into the rocks she stood to watch him. He hadn't seen her yet, too focused on keeping his possessions dry, giving her the opportunity to take him in. From this distance she couldn't see his features but his broad shoulders and lean body were a good sign he had experience with trying work, and she could make out a bright shock of white in the crown of his hair. That was more curious, she wondered if he'd been born with it or if he'd suffered such a fright, it'd left a mark. That seemed like a rude thing to ask on a first meeting so she brushed the question aside and headed towards him, carefully stepping over the rock pools and avoiding slipping on the seaweed.
⧫⧫⧫
The first thing Ezra noticed about the woman heading towards him was the fact she appeared to only be wearing her undergarments. The next was that she was soaking wet from stem to stern. Had he been a better man, he might have looked away. Instead, he blatantly stared, the liquid made the cloth cling to her body, damn near rendering it transparent. As she got close, he watched a droplet make its way down her throat, following it with his eyes, he swallowed thickly.
Up close she could see his coat was clearly well made and had probably been expensive but it was old and in desperate need of being rewaxed. Perhaps it had been a gift? Hopefully it had not been stolen. The thin scar curving across his cheek would probably give fair warning to most, but his eyes were soft and wide. He just spelt trouble for her.
"Shut your gob, the wind'll change and you'll get stuck like that."
At that Ezra closed his mouth quickly and pulled himself together, finally focusing on her face. She was waiting for him to speak, clearly sizing him up "Could you possibly direct me towards the lighthouse keeper?"
She noted his strange accent but couldn't stop rolling her eyes, no one ever expected her. "That depends on who's asking"
"Captain Williams suggested I could find respite here whilst I work his ship."
She frowned at him, “What’s your name?”
“I’m Ezra, it is a pleasure to make your acquaintance. I humbly apologise if I interrupted your swim.” again Ezra felt himself be judged, but apparently, she deemed him enough for now and nodded.
"Come on then or we'll both catch cold" she turned to climb the steps to the cottages with him following behind.
The small kitchen was warm, heated by a small arger, she moved a kettle onto its plate and tossed in a log. With a deep sigh she turned to him, biting the inside of her cheek to stop grinning at his bemused expression. "I'm going to dress; you should get out of your wet clothes too. Don't let the kettle boil dry, I'll make a cuppa, then we can talk." With that she left him dripping in the rough wooden floor.
Ezra decided then that whatever she was, she certainly wasn't grey. But she wasn't colour either, she was something else entirely. Something he couldn't recognise. It stirred something in him, an urge to uncover what lay beneath, like cracking a rock and discovering a beautiful gem. Naturally, it stirred something in his trousers too, but, he reckoned, seeing any woman wet and nearly naked would do that. Ignoring it, he tugged off his boots and trews and pulled on his spares before going to lean on the oven to warm up, feet still bare.
Just as the kettle boiled and he was closing the hot plate she reappeared, rolling her sleeves of her dark blue woolen dress up to the elbow and hanging her soaked chemise over the arger before stretching up to pull a teapot and cups out of a cupboard next to a little window.
"This is quite a place you have here, and what a view.” He looked out the window, reaching up to the wind chime made from sea glass, worn matte from the sand that hung there. He touched the smoothed edges of the glass, it felt rough on his fingers. “I'll wager it’s quite something to awaken and be able to see water on all sides without feeling the rocking of a ship beneath you." As far as Ezra could tell, it was as if he wasn't there. The woman moved around him locating loose tea and milk as if completing a ritual, never one to be discouraged from talking he continued, "Course once you get used to it, I imagine you barely notice it. But for me, having been on the waves themselves for the past weeks, it will be quite an adjustment." He looked at the two cups. "Is your husband not joining us?"
She didn't turn around, "He will not."
"Your father then? Although I am surprised a lovely thing like yourself is not betrothed. Promised perhaps?"
"No." He wasn't sure which question she had answered at first, it dawned slowly that it had in fact been both. He nearly smacked himself in the forehead.
"You wouldn't happen to be the keeper, would you?"
She turned to him then, eyebrows raised "I think perhaps you worked it out the fastest, I once strung a poor young man along for a week before he realised, I lit the light."
Ezra wasn't really one to be shocked by much, and after her appearance on the rocks this wasn't too much of a revelation, so now with her full attention he continued to talk.
"I'd wonder it doesn't get lonely though, on this rock all by oneself would be mighty isolating. Almost no one around for company except the sea and the rocks. Perhaps that's why you rent the room? That or your expenses are far higher than I'd expect" he forced himself to stop as she placed the tea and a biscuit tin on the little table and turned back to glare at him
"Why are you here?" That made him blink, halting his thread of thoughts
"I'm here to rent a room. Did I not make that explicit? I do apologise"
She waved him off "No. I know why you're here. Why are you in this place? Work sure, but work can be found anywhere, especially on the water. Work less dangerous, with better weather. Were you bored and thought it romantic?" She was stepping towards him "Are you desperate?” A step. “Do you like taking risks?" Another step "Are you running from something?" She was right in front of him then, looking up at his face "So, I'll ask again. Why are you here?" For a split-second Ezra felt frozen in her gaze but then she reached around him as grabbed his soggy trousers, turning away to hang them alongside her chemise on the airer.
He blinked and shook himself. "I wanted to see it, to work it. The dead sea. Conquer it in my own way.To continue my own adventure somewhere new." She hummed in response picking up her cup and watching him. "And what of you? All alone on this rock. Seems you're a risk taker yourself. Most people would frown upon a woman welcoming a single man into her home, it implies things. Not to mention anything could happen to you,” He couldn't help himself, his voice lowered, unable to back down from the challenge she'd given him. The implication of his crimes. “Anything at all and no one around to save you."
In a split second she'd moved, pulling a blade, he hadn't even thought to look for, out from a sheath under her apron and had it pressed against his jugular.
"A bit of risk? You needn't worry for me." her steady hand pressed firmly enough the knife nicked into his flesh "But you? You know no one here. If you die no one will notice, no one will care. No one will even think to look for your body, let alone find it." He couldn’t hold back the grin as she stepped back, inspecting the drop of blood on the blade, cup of tea still in hand. "5 shillings a week for the room and food, first payment up front, the rest when you're paid."
Well, this was surprising. Such a spark, truly tough enough to stand against an ocean. "Sounds perfect."
Finally, she cracked the smallest smile and Ezra felt as if the sun had found a fissure in the clouds. "I'll make food, I'm working tonight so it'll be breakfast for me and dinner for you, then you can settle in. When do you start on The Mistress?"
"Two days' time, should be quite an experience." He thought of the heavy clouds.
"Well make sure you don't wake me in the morning tomorrow or your stay will be very short." She wiped the drop of blood off the knife and stowed it away again. Ezra wondered what else was hidden under that apron and why he hadn’t even thought she might have the sense to be armed. He chastised himself.
"Do you man the light alone? It seems prudent you don’t have to remain awake every night."
"5 days to three, I take an extra shift, the other keeper has a house in the mainland so he spends all the time he can there. I expect it won't be long until you're sick of the sight of me."
"Oh, I doubt that, not when you're so full of surprises. Why do you rent the room, with an extra shift surely you don't need the money?”
"I don't get paid that shift," Ezra waited for her to elaborate but she didn’t. "I" she let out a laugh "Mostly I rent the room so I can buy books, something to do whilst I work. Plus, I like the company. Get to meet new people from all over for a few months and I still get to have the whole winter to myself. It's lonely as you said, sure, but I like being alone. I'm good at it."
There was a wildness in Ezra that she couldn't seem to pinpoint. Something about the reckless grin when she's threatened him, the fearlessness. It was what compelled her to let him stay. It drew her in like the pull of the moon. To welcome in such a force of nature, made her doubt her own judgment.
"I'll expect you to help plant and harvest the vegetables when the time comes." As she spoke, she moved around the kitchen throwing together the meal as quickly as she could before the sun began to dip.
Supper was simple, just a stottie with a couple eggs and vegetables. She'll have to go into town soon and see if she could get some meat cuts. But he didn't complain. Just talked continuously, complimented her cooking whilst watching her every move not unlike one might watch an animal in a zoo. It was a little unsettling and it made her feel very glad she was going to be awake all night, not letting herself be vulnerable to him at least for a few more hours.
"Will I need to be expecting guests? Women? Men? Either way I'd rather be warned beforehand." Her upfront way of talking made Ezra chuckle.
"I cannot be sure yet but I'll endeavour to let you know should I be taken by someone. And what of you? Must I prepare for being kept awake in the night by men, women or otherwise?"
She just shrugged, "I doubt it, I'm not the most popular around here at the best of times"
"That wouldn't have anything to do with your working and welcoming in strangers, would it? Are the people here so closed minded?" He smirked at the notion of the scandal that probably followed her.
"Not all of them, just those with power. I am at odds with the vicar because I sleep most Sundays and keep defying the lord's will for me"
"How cruel of you." His tone was laced in so much sarcasm it made her relax a little. At least she wouldn't have to face his judgement and sly glares for a summer.
Still, it was very strange for a woman to hold this job. “I am compelled to ask if you have ever been married?”
A look crossed her face, of pain, and of something else he didn't know. Just there for a flash and then swept away, like writing in the sand. She ignored the question. “Pay up and I'll show you your room, you can get settled and sleep off your journey. I'll imagine you're tired.”
He handed her the coins and followed her through the door and up the rickety staircase. There were two doors, one slightly ajar. The glimpse inside revealed just the end of a bed and a bookshelf but all too quickly, she opened the other door and ushered him in. Inside was cosy, or possibly just small. The bed was heavily laden with blankets which appeared to be handmade, it sat opposite a chest of drawers and a chair.
She crouched to light the fire, “Hopefully you won't need it all season but you definitely will tonight. I don't know how hardy you are against the cold.”
“Not as hardy as you I'd expect. I had the blessing of spending most of the winter months far south, so far south ice couldn't possibly be conceived”
The flame sparked in front of her, flickering around the room. "The sun is setting; I'll leave you to it. If there's an emergency I'll be in the tower. Try to stay quiet tomorrow. I'd like to actually get some sleep."
He opened his mouth to respond but she was already out the door, with a huff he sat down on the bed and opened his satchel to begin unpacking. When he was done, he stripped down, folded his clothes and placed them on the chair and curled underneath the blankets. The orange glow of the fire lit the room as the crash of the waves lulled him to sleep far quicker than usual.
⧫⧫⧫
It turned out the storm's threats had been for naught. The sky didn't break and the rain didn't come. Instead, after winding up the rotation system she enjoyed the peace and quiet, sitting back with a book only needing to move every hour to fill the sock over the paraffin with air. She was reading an old favourite, ‘Pride and Prejudice’. Mr Bennett reminded her of her father, all quick wit and dry humour. It made her laugh even as her heart ached for the loss. He used to say she was too much like Elizabeth for her own good. Hot headed and stubborn and determined, perhaps if he saw her now, he'd disagree. Be made sad by how the world had wearied her, wonder when her ability to find easy joy had gotten misplaced. But it had been dragged out to sea along with him, never to be found.
The night passed quietly and slowly. But every quiet night was a relief, to be bored, by this sea, was a blessing.
⧫⧫⧫
He awoke early, before the sun had even considered peeking over the horizon and stretched. Looking out of the window he saw the ocean was black, just the flash of the lighthouse illuminating it every few seconds. Tugging on his shirt he placed another log on the fire and picked up his leather-bound journal, an intimate document of his travels, reading the last page. Written on the boat in the cold it didn't give the most flattering depiction of the view of the village from the water. He chuckled to himself, light beginning to peek through the thin curtain as he continued to write his tale, it had its highlights. The appearance of the lighthouse keeper was one, approaching nearly naked and wet from the waves made quite the first impression. He wondered vaguely if even his ridiculous vocabulary could do it justice. The spark, the last stand against the sea, that damn near see-through chemise- he sighed to himself, that was going to haunt him.
The front door slammed shut and he heard a short curse, cut off by the sound of the keeper running up the stairs. Incurably curious, he put the journal aside and headed onto the small landing, dressed only in his long cream shirt. She had already disappeared into her room but as he stepped out, he stood directly onto a wet patch on the floor. Looking down he spotted the wet footprints. Clearly, she had striven to swim before he awoke for some discretion.
Unfortunately for her, Ezra's self-control had always run a little thin and there was no stopping him knocking on her door. It cracked open a little, her head poking out, body held to the side hidden behind the door. He grinned as her eyes widened for a second at his state of undress.
"What do you want? I'll make food in a minute"
Her statement was so concise he almost laughed. As if he had any real excuse to bother her. "It appears I have the day to myself, and with your need to rest I find myself in dire need of stimulation," an eyebrow rose at that, "Perchance could I borrow a novel? You implied ownership of quite the collection."
She pursed her lips at him and shut the door. He blinked, not expecting her just to brush him off and stood dumbstruck for a second. It was not often he was so rudely ignored. And then, even more to his surprise the door cracked open and a hand appeared. A hand clasping a book. He continued to blink at it.
"Do you want it or not? You're letting in a terrible draft." So, he took it and the door shut again. Totally baffled, he returned to his room looking at the cover. ‘Pride and Prejudice’, an old favourite.
A short while later a shout alerted Ezra to food and he chatted happily to the keeper who again appeared to be ignoring him as she hunted for bowels and pulled a dish out from the arger where it had been heating.
"I haven't had the pleasure of Jane Austen's writing for quite some time. Not since my book was cruelly stolen from me, along with several other possessions and my bag, just as I arrived in the beautiful port of Genova in northern Italy. Quite a place." He let himself trail off, expecting her to shut down his monologue or continue to ignore him.
Instead, she handed him his food, some fish pie, and sat down. "What's Genova like? I haven't been."
His face cracked into an easy grin as she watched, clearly thrilled to have her participation in the conversation even a little and he continued to talk until she yawned heavily and sloped away to sleep.
⧫⧫⧫
His day was quiet. He read, walked round the island, was delighted to see seals flopping around on the rocks, and wrote. Despite his best efforts, the lighthouse keeper seemed insistent on making herself a central character, even if she'd only been around for a few pages. Something about the woman watching the sea had captured his imagination. He wondered how she came to man the light, why she was alone, why she took him in. She had seemed far too clever to let him stay. Of all people, she should have had the sense to turn him away. Naturally, he was glad she hadn't but even so it was strange. He thought on all the trouble he'd found himself in, often of his own creation. She could very possibly become the worst of it.
⧫⧫⧫
Upstairs she tossed and turned. No idea why she'd let him stay. Maybe the loneliness had finally taken her sense. That evening, they ate together again. He talked seemingly endlessly but smoothly evaded her pointed questions about where he got his accent and why he really wanted to work the North Sea. It was amicable, but also impersonal, both still trying to gage the other well, before they could become totally comfortable. As she left to work, she told him to stay safe on the sea.
When day broke and she descended the stairs, he was gone. She hoped he'd survive.
Note
thank u for always answering with care and thoughtfulness. Saw the list of Matt's potential partners and love how each of those pairings would vary in tone and mood. We've seen the fun, intimate casualness of wade/matt. Seen a little of clint/matt which is such a fascinating pair. Not sure we've seen Nat/Matt from u, how would u write that in relation to ur verse, mcu & stuff? How about fratt? Will we ever see these pairings fleshed out in ur verses, or do u need to create new verses for them?
Hi friend!!
So I’ve done the teeniest dash of Matt/Nat in thimbles of liquor (like blink and you’ll miss it), but honestly, I imagine Matt and Nat’s relationship would look a little like his relationship with Elektra (playful but dangerous), although I think that him and Nat would be a little healthier.
I imagine that Matt would throw every part of himself wide open for Natasha, so that she wouldn’t have to dig or poke or prod around to get information. He would imagine that this is a good thing. She has a question, she asks him the question, he tells her the answer regardless of how uncomfortable it makes him.
He def thinks that this is healthy.
He def thinks that this is what will appeal to Nat’s information-hunting impulses.
Nat cannot describe how much she hates this.
Nat loves a mystery and she likes to learn about herself as she learns about someone else. It helps her work through some of her own difficulties in a way, because it, in a way, gives her permission to learn about the person she is without that having to be this huge traumatic event for her.
She loves Matt because he’s just got so many layers. She likes how two-faced he can be. She likes both sides of him equally--views the DD side as kind of sexy and someone to respect while the Matt side as someone charming and goofy. She embraces Matt at all levels and doesn’t tease him for having made the choice to compartmentalize his emotional states and personas.
Matt similarly adores Nat complexity, but more than that, he loves her childishness and her weird habits and compulsions. Rather than viewing what she does as paranoia, he thinks of the door locking and over-the-shoulder-checking and the weapons stuffed into every available weapon-shaped vessel in her apartment as sweet. Part of her. Marks of her past and symbols of the person she is, the work she does, and the struggles she carries. And he accepts them, which brings Nat warmth and comfort.
So, yeah. This is how I would write these two if I was to write them (which I’m afraid I probably won’t? I’m not invested enough in this particular relationship to get a whole fic out of it). Basically, Matt/Nat looks like a power-couple, a steely, cold, kind of thing laden with power dynamics--but at heart it isn’t that, it’s about two people chipping away at each other and clutching whatever they find there, layer after layer, to their hearts.
Matt/Frank on the other hand, I don’t view as a long-term relationship.
I imagine Matt and Frank to get together only when they’re both hurting really bad. It’s a difficult ship because it’s transient and it’s almost always a type of escapism that ends with unacknowledged comfort. Like, they’d have some pretty violent sex or a strangely loaded couple of minutes of banter, then one would snarkily thank the other and immediately get ready to fuck off wherever the hell isn’t here. But there would be a moment there, when one of them awkwardly reaches out to the other, just as the first is halfway through the door. In that moment, the second tries to open the conversation up, tries to tell the other that they understand the feelings that they are having and that they have been heard and are not alone.
But the first laughs the second off and leaves anyways, back into the street to blow into their hands, rub at their arms, and swallow down the ache in their throat.
Matt/Frank is an unspeakably sad ship in my opinion, I guess. It’s less about the snark that they have and more about a mutual fear of heartbreak and straight up? A fear of receiving empathy.
I don’t know if I’d ever write Fratt either since it makes me so sad.
Sorry boo, but I hope this at least gives you some more depth regarding Matt’s other suitors.
Could Travis and Ty's scandals be linked to Misha?
Tumblr media
Thank you for the ask.  Let me point out that these are merely my theories.  Although there is information that is unavailable to the public because in Travis's case, the investigation is still ongoing, my theory is based on the information that is available.  I am also a victim of abuse, so I am not being unsympathetic to Ty's victims, because Ty's victims really are victims.  Travis's victims are a little suspicious.
Travis Aaron Wade:
I know what predators are generally like.  Because of being a victim myself, I was on the side of Travis's victims until I looked into the case.  There is more issues to pinpoint, but I am keeping the topic only to Misha here, because I have dedicated a few posts to both Travis and his ''victims''.  These are some notable points in the case.:
They were claiming that he was abusing them during breakfast panels and Saturday night concerts, in front of too many people, and yet they had no witnesses.
Two of the victims confessed to lying.
All the victims were destiel shippers and Misha minions.
Misha, Briana, Kim and Matt Cohen know a few of the people involved personally, follow them on SM and leaving voice messages for them.  I heard Briana's voice message.
One of the victims, Sara Burnhope, who knows Misha and his parents personally, told Travis on social media, that Misha hates him.
One of them, Lua James aka Theresa Cotter [@Poptivist on Twitter], stabbed a knife into Travis's door and then fled California.  She is Kim's friend.  They were spending time outside of con.
Why did Misha hate Travis
Misha has two babies as far as his work on SPN went.  One is Destiel, and the other is the Wayward daughters.  These two babies ensured that he was always employed on a show that kills off every other non lead.  One of them, Wayward Daughters, derailed because Misha is wrong.
Destiel
Travis threatened destiel because he was gushing over J2's friendship during his panel saying that he had never met two people more in love.  He described their friendship so much, that he was pulled out of the next con by Clif, the resident drama queen.  Way to be suspicious, Clif.  That is exactly what you do when you don't J2 Tinhats to become alert, blithering idiot.  In none of the gushings did Travis say anything regarding Jensen and Misha or Destiel.  Misha didn't want that.  Notice how destiel-positive Osric and gang are.  Even Alex is becoming destiel positive now, because when he wasn't, the hellers bashed him on SM.  They did the same thing to Samantha Smith.  But Travis not only didn't acknowledge Destiel.  He was elevating J2's friendship above all the other relationships on SPN.  And Misha was getting livid.
Wayward Daughters
Wayward Daughters was something that only Misha and his hellers pushed.  I always wondered why he did it, because I consider him to be a liberal poser.  He pretends to supports something if it benefits him or his reputation.  Crusading for women's rights and then calling them perverts for having a love for shipping, seems hypocritical to me.  I think he pushed Wayward to secure a future for himself.  There is rumor that's been going on since last year and the Js want to finish of with SPN completely.  They want to long hiatus from acting.  Nobody knows when.  If that happens, Misha doesn't have a job, and we all know that other than the hellers, nobody else is impressed by his acting.  He gets laughed at.  If there is a spinoff, Castiel is likely to have a home there, because most of the fans will be Misha fans.  Misha would have still been able to bait his fans, by 'reminiscing' about Dean in a suggestive manner and if CW was on board, showing scenes between Dean and Cas.  He might have even confirmed Destiel because Jensen wouldn't have been around to stop him.  The bottom line is he would have used destiel to keep that job as well.
Kim and Briana were on his side, because they had vested interest in the project and are fake militant feminists.  Unfortunately, Cole [Travis's character] became so popular that some fans wanted a spin off for him, and when Cole was pitted against Jody and Donna by Geekiary, for best spinoff candidate, Cole won.  I can just imagine how angry Misha and gang were.  And it now makes sense, for Kim and Brianna to know the accusers and the implicated parties personally.  My theory is that they all got together and set Travis up to get him out of the way.  Until the case goes to court, and reaches a conclusion, that is all my assumption will be.  A theory.
Ty Olsson
In his official response, Ty admitted that what he did was 100% wrong.  And he was.  Fans had cause to complain and feel violated.  I am not taking away from their grief.  They really are victims.  I think that, just like Travis, this guy is a complete idiot.  Travis was causing too many ripples because of his big mouth, and Ty was sipping from other people's drinks.  He said it was not enough to get drunk with.  He said that he was roofied.  Why do I believe him?  Because someone who had such habitually bad behavior would have a reputation to match.  He would have misbehaved at other cons and set environments.  Consequently, he would have not gotten hired for projects.  He would be blacklisted because he would cause terrible PR for any studio.
Ty has worked on SPN before.  He played a bartender during the earlier seasons.  That means, that J2 and co have known Ty for years.  There are women on that set too.  He has never misbehaved with any of them, but he chooses one event, especially when there are witnesses and victims have cameras and can film his bad behavior, to just go nuts?  Does that make sense?  Ty has also worked on other projects before and since.  In fact, after the scandal, he worked on 14 projects and even won an award in 2017.  He's around women on these projects too.  How come he isn't misbehaving now?  How come he lost total inhibitions and professionalism on one night?  And how come nobody is stabbing a knife in his door?  How come the fans are all a mixed group of people, and not just Misha's fans.  Who would roofie him and why?
There are only two drugs that he could have been roofied with.  Rohypnol and GHB.  Rohypnol can cause euphoria, reduced inhibitions and reduced ability to make judgments.  Users may slur their speech.  That is why people thought Ty was drunk.  GHB effects begin 15-60 minutes after use [like in the Green room] and typically last up to six hours.  Just about enough time to do photo ops.  It can be detected in the urine up to 12 hours after ingestion.  This is why I agree with Ty, that he is a completely idiot.  He only guessed that he might have gotten sick [symptom of both drugs is nausea] because of roofies and only then did he do a urine test.  By then the GHB was undetectable.
Ty guessed that one of that one of the fans roofied him.  But they were all drinking from their flasks, and none of them exhibited the same symptoms that he did.  So it had to be someone who had access to the Green room and Ty's beverage.  Time wise that would make sense.
So who would benefit from Ty being out of the way.
Misha, is my guestimation.  Why did Ty bother Misha so much?  Because of Destiel.  Destiel is Misha's floatation device.  When Benny came on board, he had a strong connection with Dean.  And Jensen enjoyed working with him, according to what he said during his panels.  Ty even got to do a panel with Jensen.  Misha only gets one panel a year, on average with Jensen.  No other person, neither Rob nor Richard, has ever shared the stage with Jensen.  Ty got that chance.  I think Jensen was missing Jared but then why not get Misha to join him.  Why choose this guy?  That must have bugged Misha.  And no, he doesn't love Jensen.  He is not obsessed with Jensen.  He just loves riding Jensen's coat tails.
People were even shipping Benny and Dean together, which is baffling because Benny and Dean were on screen while Cas was still there.  Purgatory was supposed to be a big moment for Misha and Destiel because Misha would have had Jensen all to himself without Jared being around to take the limelight away from him.  Misha probably assumed that this vampire was not going to pose any problems.  Misha doesn't know how slash works, does he?  At one point during Jibcon, Ty tried to make Jensen laugh, very provocatively.  He felt bad about making Jensen feel uncomfortable so he came back awhile later and apologized to Jensen in front of all the fans.  Jensen was shocked [as I was] and quickly said: '' You don't have to...are you kidding me?  I loved it.''  He sent him off with a butt smack and a ''I love you, man.  No worries.''
Misha apologizes for none of the horrible things he has done, no matter how uncomfortable he makes Jensen feel.  Watching that footage again, especially Jensen's genuinely shocked and moved reaction, actually made me tear up a little.  Whoever roofied Ty, acted alone, did it in the Green room and the effect lasted a solid six hours or so.  So who has access to the Green room other than the actors and their handlers?  I will leave that up to debate.  Roofieing someone is dangerous because it can kill a person if mishandled.
I hope this answers the question.
Bit of a “meta” start for this edition of the MMN, as I just want to let folks in on how our Monday Meeting is running and the sort of topics generally covered, and the specific ones we talked about this week. Except for the [REDACTED] ones.
Bit o’ history, for folks coming new to this blog.
The Monday Lunch Meeting was once a meeting the entire staff of White Wolf was able to have for something like the first six months I was at WW mid- 1992. As the company grew, we went from everybody attending, to some departments spinning off to other days as the sheer number of people made it impossible, but Production & Design, my department, kept to Mondays.
I liked, and still like, starting the week with what is essentially a huddle. A re-focus moment before the week pulls us in all sorts of directions. In the early days, we’d actually divvy up tasks at the meeting to be sure everything we needed to accomplish in the coming week was covered. Even when all that was left of WW in terms of publishing TTRPGs was Eddy Webb and myself, we actually ate lunch during the meeting still, until I founded Onyx Path and brought the company-wide Monday Meeting back.
    Dragon Blooded Kingfisher illustration by Mel Uran
    So, through all the years we come to our current Monday Lunch Meeting, although there have been evolutionary changes to our process:
1- We are a virtual office, with folks scattered around who attend, so we’re “starting off on Monday” even if Matthew’s day is actually getting close to sundown.
2- For a similar reason, nobody is required to eat lunch during the meeting, and with us all on Skype it’s really best if folks don’t do much munching and crunching.
3- Therefore, nobody waits until folks are midway through a Subba Wubba sandwich to tell us how the Andes plane crash survivors turned cannibals. In detail. Until some folks turned green.
4- Onyx Path has now grown to such a point that we have nine people in on the call, so in the interest of staying focused, we’ve recently adopted a process where the first hour of the meeting is the Production half, where we run down every project being worked on. You see most of that list in the Updates here every week. Then we move to Operations, and we review sales info, marketing, social media and PR, and new business.
5- Everyone is encouraged to both venture opinions and to bring up anything they feel is pertinent, and to absolutely speak up if they need clarification. The main purpose of the meeting is to provide everyone with knowledge of where Onyx Path is on that Monday, and what we need to do for the rest of the week, or even further out.
6- Usually, I’ll derive the points I want to write about in this blog every week from the general drift of our interests and concerns at the Monday Meeting, although, as our crew knows, sometimes I’ll zoom in on something related but not directly discussed if I think it makes a good subject.
      C20 Freeholds illustration by Pat McEvoy
      This week, here’s some highlights of what we discussed:
  I threw a whole bunch of project pitches at White Wolf for approvals, and we’re waiting for the OK or notes from them.
  We also sent over another bunch of project outlines for approvals as well, and we’re also waiting for those to get back to us. Both of these steps are the ones before the steps you see below in the Updates, and are basically the developers preparing the info they need in order to hire writers.
  Speaking of outlines, we have a bunch almost done for the upcoming Scion projects that came out of the Kickstarter Stretch Goals. Neall really couldn’t finalize them until the text for both Origin and Hero was complete.
  Dixie has been touching base with “her” developers for the CofD and Exalted 3rd, and working with them on their schedule of releases, and she’ll be doing her first errata input pass on the next book ready for that stage, either Night Horrors: Enemy Action or the Beast PG.
  We sat down last week and conceptualized the release schedule for the Trinity Continuum lines, now that we have a much more concrete idea of our Trinity community interest and numbers after the Kickstarter. Thinking through how the Continuum can be represented by Community Content is an added, and welcome, piece to that process. Now we’re arguing about which actual titles the TC Core and TC: Aeon should have!
  Some writers are late, some artists needed replacing, some editing is getting swapped around, and some projects are holding up other ones. So, situation normal, and we adjust to this every Monday!
  We expect Wraith20 errata to close sometime between this Weds. and next Weds. and we’ll see if  Night Horrors: Enemy Action and the Beast PG also fit that time frame.
  Mirthful Mike is starting on the graphics for the Dragon Blooded Kickstarter for later this month, and we’re looking for James’ to present his plan for the KS based on earlier conversations. I’ll be asking James to establish address change and shipping deadlines right in our KS description and FAQs, because we continue to have backers message us two years after shipping wanting their books – and we just aren’t set up to have these books sitting around indefinitely. We really hate disappointing people.
  The Mirthful One is also designing the logo for the Scarred Lands Community Content site, the Slaracian Vault. Once that is finished we’ll be stress testing the site. Eddy is also looking at opening up a few aspects of Canis Minor, the Pugmire Community Content site, so keep an eye out there.
  For the Scarred Lands Kickstarter, as backers are aware, we’ve just had the damnedest time pulling together all the threads that my old friend Stewart Wieck left dangling after his untimely death, but with a few adjustments we and Nocturnal Media have almost everything needed in the fulfillment shipper’s warehouse. While they are arranging the shipping, I’m going to send out the Scarred Lands posters from the Kickstarter individually to those who pledged for them.
  Mighty Matt McElroy wants everybody to know that we have shipped a whole truck-load of extra Kickstarter projects to our friends at Indie Press Revolution (IPR), including the Prestige Edition and Screen of Dark Eras (the first one), the Deluxe and Ultra-Deluxe Editions of Exalted 3rd Edition and a whole lot of the additional items, and the Deluxe Edition and Screen for W20 Shattered Dreams. (See more info and links below in the IPR section of the Blurbs!)
  Matt also pointed out that the Beast Players’ Guide and Night Horrors: Enemy Action PDFs have been #1 and #2 on DTRPG‘s bestsellers list these past couple of days! Congrats to all involved!
  Although we have, as a company, pulled away from monitoring social media beyond our own – as per one of our wellness resolutions from our MidWinter Summit – we do go over any posts that concern us. So we did today. As usual, this isn’t an area that I like us to wade into publicly, but I include it to show that we don’t just ignore internet comments.
  We learned in our meeting that our in-house developers (Eddy, Dixie, and Matthew) really like to talk. So we discussed how we could maybe give them a place where they can talk as much as they want…
    So you can see, that these notes are indeed pulled from the Monday Meeting each week, and while you could say our motto should be “Many Words, One Path”, it is in fact:
Many Worlds, One Path!
    BLURBS!
KICKSTARTER:
  Our next Kickstarter is slated to be EX3‘s Dragon-Blooded near the end of March.
      As we try and find ways to enable our community to more easily play our games, the Onyx Dice Rolling App is now live! Our dev team has been doing updates since we launched based on the excellent use-case comments by our community, and this thing is both rolling and rocking!
The devs have added a whole bunch of new game lines’ dice and rolling bg’s and got caught by a bug Apple needed to fix, so be sure to update your app and soon that should be fixed.
There’s been tweaks to all elements of the UI, you can now preview every die type in the store, and you can use multiple die types per roll! Here are the links for the Apple and Android versions:
“Fighting the Machine is like fighting the ocean. You literally cannot hurt it. Doesn’t matter how much poison we dump into the ocean. We’ll only kill the things in it. We’ll never kill it. Same with the God-Machine. Kill angels, traitors, stigmatics, cultists, cryptids, whatever, you’ll never hurt the Machine Itself. No, that doesn’t mean we stop trying. You stop trying, you drown. Screw that.”
—Mr. Bliss, Guardian Inquisitor
Night Horrors: Enemy Action includes:
• Dozens of Storyteller characters, including Unchained, angels, exiles, cryptids, and stigmatics, for use as antagonists, allies, or just inspiration
• Multiple plot hooks and story seeds for your Demon: The Descent chronicles
        With a howl of RAGE, the W20 Changing Ways PDF and physical book PoD charges at you this Wednesday on DTRPG.com! http://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/229183/W20-Changing-Ways
Changing Ways is an in-depth look at what it means to be a werewolf, both on a personal level and as part of a pack. It digs deep into what it feels like to have bones re-knit after breaking, the range of senses available across all forms, and the sudden heady rush of the Gifts and Rites bestowed by spirits. It also provides a look at what life is like for lupus and metis werewolves, characters who have had experiences alien to any person. It shows the many ways that werewolves organize in packs, and how those packs are designed as groups of warriors, rather than aligned to the behavior of wolves.
Changing Ways contains:
• A detailed look at what it means to grow up as a lupus or metis werewolf, and how that colors a character’s perspective.
• More information on what it feels like to be a werewolf, a creature that changes in both body and mind.
• Frameworks and organizations for packs, along with new tactics and systems for forging the pack as part of play.
        Appearing on DriveThruRPG this Wednesday are the PDF and PoD physical book versions of Arms of the Chosen for Exalted 3rd Edition! http://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/226224/Arms-of-the-Chosen
• Information on Half-Damned antagonists for vampire chronicles.
        A Land Where Legends Walk
Drawing enthusiastically on Greek mythology, the revised and re-imagined Scarred Lands nonetheless retains its place as a modern fantasy RPG setting. This is a world shaped by gods and monsters, and only the greatest of heroes can expect to be counted among them. The most populous continent of Scarn, Ghelspad, plays host to vast unexplored regions, hides unsolved riddles from ancient cultures, and taunts adventures with the promise of undiscovered riches hidden among the ruins of older civilizations.
Yet the myths of the Scarred Lands are relatively recent events. The effects of the Titanswar still ripple through the world, and the heroines and villains of many of these stories are part of living memory, if not still living.
The Award-Winning Fantasy Setting Returns
Scarred Lands has been a favorite fantasy setting since the release of the Creature Collection for the d20 System in 2000. The completely unnecessary news analysis
by Christopher Smart
March 3, 2020
GOP OK's FREEDOM OF MASTURBATION
In a public session of the Utah Senate last week, an anti-masturbation amendment was shot down, figuratively, of course, by Republicans. Now, before you jump to conclusions, the political analysts here at Smart Bomb explain that masturbation remains legal, as long as it's done in a house or motel room. Cars and theaters are out. The dustup occurred during a debate on abortion, where senators voted along party lines to approve legislation that would outlaw abortion in the event that Roe v. Wade is overturned. Sen. Luz Escamilla, a Democrat, looked to do one better than Republicans, who believe life begins at inception, rather than at birth. She introduced an amendment that would prohibit any male ejaculation outside of a vagina (sperm but no egg). OK, Wilson, it was pretty funny, but Republicans weren't laughing. First of all, many Utah Republicans don't like hearing the word “masturbation” because, well, you know why. And another thing: they don't like the utterance of the word “vagina.” It's enough to take all the fun out of banning abortion.
GET THE TAR AND FEATHERS — CHRIS MATTHEWS IS NEXT
The Political Correctness Police are out and you should be careful not to offend them or it could be curtains or banishment to San Salvador. Oh yes, it's dangerous out there. Just ask Chris Matthews, the veteran broadcaster and 27-year host of “Hard Ball,” who just got a very public brown helmet from MSNBC. He had the temerity to compare Bernie Sanders' win in Nevada to the Nazi takeover of France. He was referring, of course, to Hitler's rapid Blitzkrieg attack — not concentration camps. But someone was offended. And in a GQ story last week, journalist Laura Bassett complained Matthews said, “Why haven't I fallen in love with you yet.” She continued: "Another time, he stood between me and the mirror and complimented the red dress I was wearing for the segment." OK, that does it, take the bastard out and shoot him. There is good reason for the #MeToo movement: Harvey Weinstein is exhibit #1. But piling Matthews in with former NBC Today host, Matt Lauer, who raped at least one assistant and coerced many more into sex, is simply bullshit. So, tar and feather guys like Lauer and ride them out of town on a rail. But when people like Al Franken and Garrison Keilor are similarly set ablaze for “inappropriate” behavior right along with the rapists, something isn't right.
TRUMP HAS EPIDEMIC IN HAND
In the 2002 movie “28 Days Later,” a virus kills practically everyone on Earth. Sound familiar? The survivors have to steal beer from 7-11 in order to survive. But the clerks are zombies. Not to worry, President Trump and VP Mike Pence have things totally under control. A special feature of Trump's border wall is that it stops viruses. Who knew? Also, Pence has deployed the new Space Force to shoot lasers at the Chinese, Italians and Iranians, thereby slowing the spread of Coronavirus. The White House also has ginned up its PR machine so Fox News will report the pandemic is a hoax perpetrated by Bernie Saunders and the Bernie Bros. In theory, that will help the stock market reverse direction so Trump can get reelected. Although everyone's 401-K has gone to hell, there is some good news: futures of hand-sanitizer are up. Viewers of MSNBC, of course, will hide under their beds with N95 masks covering all orifices. But anyone wearing a red MAGA hat will be protected from the virus, according to the White House. Among other things, that will allow college students to go on spring break without fear. Hopefully, those half-naked girls at Daytona Beach won't be zombies. But who knows.
REPUBLICAN: CHUCK MITT ROMNEY OUT
Mitt Romney's torture ain't over yet — not by a long shot. The rabid representative from Florida, Matt Gaetz, last week called for the Mittster to be expelled from the Republican ranks in the Senate. “He is not acting like a Republican,” Gaetz said on Fox. “He has shown no interest in working with this administration, or with Republicans who are eager to seize the opportunity of the Trump presidency.” See there, one person's tragedy is another's opportunity. Like, when will there be another chance to destroy the institutions that hold this country together? And look what's been accomplished already — a gigantic tax cut for the wealthy and big spending boost for the Military. And, of course, cuts to social services, including slashing Food Stamps, where hungry children are ripping taxpayers off. But we digress. Who the hell does Mitt Romney think he is — voting to impeach the president simply for trying to coerce a foreign government to mess with our elections. Utah State Rep. Phil Lyman beat Gaetz to the draw recently by sponsoring a resolution to censure Romney. Although it died, the resolution was meaningless, except to send a signal to Trump that Utah still has his backside — or in this case, his big, fat German ass.
Post Script — Well, that was the week of the Coronavirus. And, no doubt, there are many more to come. People were dying. People were panicking. People were buying out N95 face masks and hand sanitizer. Crowds disappeared from Venice. (By the way, there are some good deals right now on Italian vacations.) The virus is bad news for the cruise ship business, too. Imagine being quarantined with 3,700 white people in Bermuda shorts. If that isn't hell, we don't know what is. Of course, all the made-in-China parts needed for stuff we buy here in the U.S. are running out because Chinese workers have to stay home. When they are depleted, there will be no refrigerators, washing machines, phones, TVs, microwaves and just about everything else. Our economy — and way of life — is so intertwined with China that we couldn't unravel it if we wanted to. That, of course, is a big, bad realization for Trump and his nationalist conservatives who want to roll up the welcome mat and pretend Americans are the only people on planet Earth. The brunt of the pandemic has yet to hit us here, but the anticipation is anything but pleasant. It's like vacationing on the beach at Banda Ache when the Tsunami warning sounds. All you can do is grab the hand sanitizer and hope you float.
  Well, Wilson, here we are biding our time until Coronavirus hits, so what can you and the band give us for a little piece of mind:
Sitting here in limbo / Waiting for the dice to roll / Yeah, now, sitting here in limbo / Got some time to search my soul / Well, they're putting up a resistance / But I know that my faith will lead me on...
OH MY GOD FINALLY!
Husband had to work. I had to wait for husband to get home. I can’t remember the last time I used so much willpower to stay off Twitter and Tumblr to avoid untagged spoilers...
Some initial, chaotic impressions under the cut:
(1) I love what the writing staff has done with Lotor and I hate it because I don’t want my babies having to fight competent and smart villains. Love A.J. Locascio’s work as the voice actor.
(2) On the plus side, more actual infighting within the Galra Empire is a good thing.
(3) I don’t like how the Blade of Marmora faded into mentions after the first episode, but keep reminding myself that this was originally the first half of a longer series. Similarly, we didn’t see Keith’s Marmora blade *once* that I recall in my flying first watch.
(4) And at first I thought it was cool to have shorter episodes more often, but having been through it, now I think I’d rather have the full 13 episodes even if it does mean a longer wait.
(5) The callbacks both amused and slightly annoyed me. Some were very subtle unless you are familiar with GoLion, such as the original names for Haggar and the Galra homeworld. I think I could have done without Sven, but if they had to do it, it was amusing and did not drag on for too long. (Tangent question: that WAS poor Josh Keaton trying to do a Norwegian accent, wasn’t it?)
(6) While I’m still not thrilled with musical lions--it really does feel like following the old show too much to me--at least they tried to justify why and how the changes could happen given stated canon and made a lot of drama about it. (Keith’s “Please, no.” is never not going to hurt.) I also like the confirmation that Alfor piloted the Red Lion, for the selfish reason that I guessed right in one of my fanfics.
(7) On the other hand, sorting out the team dynamic, and then resorting it was good drama with some emotional and some funny moments. I am both pleased with Allura’s development into a strong team member, even as I’m stamping my feet that she didn’t need a freaking lion to be important to the story and what about her pink sparkly magic?
(8) I have a nasty, suspicious mind. I am really, really not certain about this Shiro being our Shiro, despite the moments shared with the others, especially Keith. There’s this “Operation Kuron” thing. The fact that they did a subtle redesign of the character post-haircut just makes me think that original-design Shiro is still out there somewhere and this one is Not The One. The fact that Black wouldn’t fly for him might support that idea. I also genuinely wasn’t expecting Shiro’s absence to be resolved until close to the end of the season
(9) I like that the writers are showing Keith’s growth as a leader as a process, not a guaranteed result. I’m generally pleased with his interactions with Lance evolving, I guess (still don’t ship them, never will). I’m less pleased with the emphasis on Pidge demanding “plans with specifics now please”. Yes, its in her nature but I feel like the writers put too much emphasis on it.
(10) The idea of the Galra Girl Generals squad is excellent. Lotor’s embrace of hybrids (assuming that the impression is correct and he is Zarkon and Haggar’s son and therefore a hybrid himself) is a good thing and sets up Interesting Possibilities down the road when he and Keith come face to face. However, the characters themselves feel awfully one-note so far: the one that shoots first without asking questions, the chirpy one, the mysterious one (although the fact that she’s blind is a cool representational thing), and the competent/loyal one.
(11) I’m all for the throw-it-all-against-the-wall method for finales, like “Best Laid Plans/Blackout”. I’m not quite so sure about mid-arc. Lotor seems to have so many things going (propaganda war, solidifying his position, teladuv piece, comet...) that I feel like I’m losing track even with only 7 episodes.
(12) I don’t know if it’s an effect of the split season or what, but there were points where I felt the story genuinely dragged. I never felt that in Seasons 1-2; even if there were plot points that interested me less, I never felt that the story was dragging before.
(13) Case in point - I’m not sure we needed nearly a full episode to delve into Zarkon and Alfor’s background. I feel like a lot of that story could have been tightened up in favor of moving the general arc along a little more or giving fans some of the stuff we hope to see like flashbacks to the Garrison/more about Matt. If we had the full 13 episodes at once, it might not have stuck out so much.
I have a bit of shippy stuff to say, but I’ll save it for another post, possibly after a rewatch. Short version would be I am generally pleased except for the lurking suspicion of #7 above.
And NOW I get to wade through an entire day’s stuff on Tumblr...see you on the other side.
"No way - I can’t have TWO soulmates." with Lance/Shiro/Keith? Only if you're still taking soulmate prompts! ^^
okay disclaimer, I don’t really know much about polyamory, so rather than potentially spreading incorrect information about how polyamorous relationships work, I left this open enough that you can interpret it as romantic or platonic or a combination of the two, it’s totally  up to you as the reader. (personally, I really love the idea of platonic soulmates tbh.) (and if any of my followers is poly and wants to educate me, that would be amazing!) I went with the good ol’ “soulmate’s name appears on your body as a tattoo” au because it’s a classic and I think it fits this prompt well.
and for the record, in writing this I’m assuming keith and lance are the same age and that shiro is like two years older so please don’t harass me about age gaps I just write what people tell me to okay
prompt is from this list
Keith knows that the soulmate system is complicated. He knows that there are sometimes flukes, complications. He knows that some soulmates are lovers, while some instead share a deep, unbreakable friendship. He knows that some soulmates are born on opposite sides of the world, and that a lot of those couples never meet. He knows that some people get their marks early in their teens, while some don’t get them until their twenties. He knows that some people never get a mark at all.
But he’s never heard of someone having two marks before.
The first name appeared a few days after his fifteenth birthday, a single Japanese character inked into the skin on the inside of his left forearm. The lines are thick and smooth and almost look like brush strokes, and a few hours on a translater app revealed that the character is “shiro,” the Japanese word for the color white. Keith wonders if this is his soulmate’s real name, or if it’s a nickname. He wonders if the fact that his soulmate is Japanese means that they’ll never meet each other, spending their entire lives on opposite sides of an ocean.
He signed up for Japanese classes the semester after it appeared, just in case.
He’s sixteen now, and he’s almost definitely going to be late for his first class because he’s spent the last fifteen minutes staring into his bathroom mirror, studying the new mark that has appeared on his right shoulder while he was sleeping. This one, at least, requires no translation. The letters are phonetic, a sloppy cursive, like his soulmate had scribbled down their signature in a hurry. L-a-n-c-e.
“No way - I can’t have TWO soulmates.” He runs careful fingers over the letters, as if he expects them to rub off like paint, but they’re inked just as deeply and permanently as the character on his opposite wrist. He wonders if this is some kind of cosmic screw-up, or if it means that something has happened to his other soulmate. His chest tightens at the thought.
He skips class that day, opting instead to wade through dozens of online forums dedicated to “unusual” soulmate situations. After several hours, he does find a few other cases of people with multiple marks, although apparently it’s incredibly rare, even more so than someone being born without any. One anonymous forum user claims that they have two marks, as does each of their soulmates, and that the three of them have been in a healthy romantic relationship for years. Another user tells the story of how one of their soulmates is their lover, the other their best friend.
He spends quite a while just staring at the names on his skin, wondering who they are and what connection they’ll have to him if or when he finds them.
Keith doesn’t find his first soulmate until it’s too late.
Stories of the Kerberos mission are everywhere, from television to the Internet to the conversations of strangers on the street.
Three people missing, presumed dead. Sam and Matt Holt, father and son, and their pilot.
The pilot’s name was Takashi Shirogane, but a few of the news networks mention that he was better known as “Shiro” to his family and friends.
Keith pauses the news story when he hears that, and spends what feels like hours staring at the face on the screen. They’ve used his Garrison graduation photo, and that’s what kills Keith the most, knowing that they were at the same damn school for two whole years and never noticed each other. He even remembers the seeing him in the halls, a tall, attractive boy with black hair and an easy smile. It had never occurred to him to check the names of the people in other classes, that his soulmate might have been in the same building as him, just a year or two older.
And now one of his soulmates is gone.
He skips school again, spends most of his day thinking about Shiro, about whether he was scared when he died. He briefly considers looking for Shiro’s family, reaching out to them, but he decides against it. He never knew their son – he has no claim to their grief, no right to feel the aching sense of loss that eats away at him and makes his chest feel hollow.
He runs his fingers over the mark on his shoulder, wondering if his other soulmate was Shiro’s as well. Wondering if maybe, somewhere in the big wide world, someone knows what he’s feeling, shares his peculiar kind of grief.
He drops out of the Garrison a few weeks later.
Lance is pretty sure that the universe is determined to make his life difficult, especially where soulmates are involved. He realized the whole thing was a cosmic joke the second he went through his yearbook and realized that the only Keith at the Garrison was the emo kid with the mullet.
Okay, so there’s no way of knowing for sure that this guy is his Keith. Hunk, ever the supportive best friend, encourages Lance to reach out to him, points out that the very worst thing that can happen is that Lance’s soulmate is a different Keith, in which case Lance doesn’t have to spend the rest of his life trying to convince him to cut his hair.
But Lance doesn’t reach out to him, doesn’t even talk to him. He tells Hunk that it’s because he doesn’t have time for soulmates right now, that he needs to focus on improving his flying skills if he’s going to make it into the fighter class. And that’s part of it, but not the whole truth. Lance keeps the truth to himself, because explaining the whole thing would mean telling Hunk about his second mark, which no one but his parents know about.
Lance wasn’t surprised when it was a guy’s name that showed up on his skin when he was fourteen. The handwriting was messy and cramped, the five letters positioned on the left side of his chest, just over his heart. K-e-i-t-h. He’d assumed that this was a future boyfriend, maybe a future husband. He knew platonic soulmates did happen, of course, but he’d always seen himself as more of a romantic type.
And then the second mark appeared on the other half of his chest and ruined everything. This one was more ambiguous. “Shiro” could be a guy or a girl, although at least he can be pretty sure that his second soulmate is Japanese. Although the fact that he has a second soulmate at all raises questions that he’s not sure he wants answers to.
And the thing that really scares him, the thing that keeps him from telling Hunk or his siblings or anyone about the second mark, is the idea that just because these people are his soulmates doesn’t necessarily mean that he’s theirs. He lays awake some nights, wondering if maybe Keith and Shiro only have each other’s names, if maybe he’s destined to be an outsider in their dynamic. And it’s that fear that keeps him from approaching the Keith at the Garrison.
He doesn’t give up completely, though. He still holds out some hope that maybe Keith will take notice of him and make the first move. He constantly works on his flying, half to improve his rank and half because he hopes that if he and Keith end up competing with each other, it will force whatever confrontation needs to happen.
The longer Keith goes without giving him any notice, the more he starts to believe that he isn’t the one. Or maybe that dark, quiet part of his mind is right, maybe his fears were justified, and maybe Keith only has one mark, one soulmate to look for. And maybe it isn’t him.
After a man named Shiro disappears on one of Pluto’s moons and Keith drops out of the Garrison, Lance decides that he’s definitely meant to spend his life alone.
Most days, Takashi Shirogane doesn’t know what is real and what is his broken, fevered brain trying desperately to give him a bit of relief.
He’s pretty sure that the gladiator fights are real. The adrenaline, the rush, the blood, the pain – it’s all too vivid, too dreadfully clear, to be anything but reality. After every fight, when he’s staring down at his own bloodstained hands, at the broken body of his opponent, he thinks that this is the only thing that has ever been real. Whoever he was before, whatever life he had, is gone. There is only the arena. There is only fighting and death.
He can’t decide if the names on his skin are real or a hallucination. Sometimes he runs a fingertip over the “Keith” etched along his ribs on his left side, or the “Lance” on his right wrist, and thinks that they’re the only real thing he has left. Other times, he stares down at the letters and thinks that they must be just another empty dream.
When they take his arm, he decides it doesn’t matter whether his soulmates are real or not. He’s never going to find them anyway, because he knows now that he isn’t going to get off this prison ship alive.
Keith thinks his hands might be shaking a little as he goes through his clothes (he doesn’t really have a closet, just a couple of boxes that he digs through whenever he needs an outfit), trying to find something big enough for Shiro. He’s still reeling, still trying to wrap his brain around the fact that Shiro is here, next to him. Not dead, but… changed. His black hair is streaked with white, much of the skin that isn’t covered by his clothes marred by scars. He looks… older. Tired. And he keeps glancing around with wide eyes, like he expects Keith’s room to melt away, leaving him back in whatever hell he just escaped from.
And there’s a guy named Lance sitting in the next room, loudly arguing with that Pidge kid. Keith is trying to decide whether that’s too weird to be a coincidence.
Once he’s found a shirt that’s always been far too big on him, but that he thinks will work for Shiro, he turns around the hand it over. He clears his throat, not sure if he should offer his guest some privacy or if it’s a bad idea to leave the guy who just escaped from an alien super-prison alone.
Shiro makes the decision for him when he shrugs and removes the dirty, torn shirt he’s wearing, too tired or in too much shock to care about his audience.
Keith barely manages to keep himself from audibly gasping.
Shiro’s torso is completely covered with scars, some of them raised lines, some puckered skin, some pink and raw as if they’re more recent than the others. But that isn’t what catches Keith’s attention. His gaze goes straight to Shiro’s left side, where he finds his own name, the black ink a sharp contrast against the white scar tissue surrounding it.
Lance has a feeling that it’s going to be several nights before he gets used to sleeping in the castle. It’s too quiet, too empty, and too… well, too alien. He can somehow feel that he’s a very, very long way from home. And besides that, so much has happened in the last twenty-four hours that he’s not sure he’ll ever fully process it.
Aliens. Robot lions. Paladins. Voltron. It would all sound ridiculous if he hadn’t just lived through it.
So when he hears a soft knock on his bedroom door, it only takes a few seconds for him to jump out of bed and answer it.
When he sees Shiro and Keith standing in his doorway, a glimmer of hope washes over him, followed immediately by a jolt of unease. He glances between the two of them, as if the reason for their visit might be written on one of their faces. Shiro, who looks much better now that he’s clean and rested, is wearing an expression that’s difficult to read. If Lance didn’t know better, he’d say he looked shy. Keith, on the other hand, just looks incredibly uncomfortable. And pissed.
It’s Keith who speaks first. “Dude. We were in the same year at the Garrison for three years. Why didn’t you tell me?”
And Lance knows that he should be relieved, or grateful, or even happy, but instead all he can manage to feel is annoyance. “What about you? You ignored me for all three of those years!”
“You could have introduced yourself.” Keith huffs, crossing his arms. “You’re just as much at fault here as I am.”
“At least I was actually looking for you.” Lance hisses, “Instead of just waiting around for my soulmate to fall from the sky or–” He cuts himself off when he realizes that, technically, Shiro did fall from the sky just the night before, albeit inside an escape pod.
“I figured after…” Keith glances at Shiro, like he’s not sure how to breach his next subject without being insensitive. “… after the Kerberos mission made the news, I figured I wasn’t meant to find my other soulmate. It seemed like I was meant to be alone.”
Lance doesn’t want to admit that he felt the same way, that he still feels that way. So instead, he narrows in on the other piece of information Keith has just revealed. “Wait, so you… you have two names, right?” He turns to Shiro. “Both of you?”
Shiro nods, a small smile breaking across his face. “I do. Although I’ll admit, this isn’t quite how I imagined meeting you.”
“Yeah.” Lance leans against his doorframe, suddenly feeling very tired. “So… what does this mean? That there’s three of us, I mean. I’ve never known anyone with more than one soulmate before.”
“I guess we’ll figure it out?” Keith sounds as unsure as Lance feels.
Shiro nods. “We’ve got a lot to figure out. And not just between the three of us. But we’ll be okay.” He claps a hand on each of the other boys’ shoulders, the gesture so easy that it feels natural.
Lance steps back, holding his door open for them. “You guys better come in, then. We have a lot of catching up to do.”
Can You Like Gabe Kapler and Not Like Him at the Same Time?
I’m here to answer a question that I was asked the other day by someone in the strangest of places.
My daughter is a dancer and her character shoes broke during dress rehearsal for a show she is in.
Desperate for a new pair, I ended up ordering her a new pair on Amazon. However, I wasn’t sure how the sizes ran, so I asked a question first, hoping someone would answer it.
The person who answered the question suggested had the name “Phillies” in their username. When I thanked them, I signed off with a pleasant, “Go Phillies.”
The follow up response was filled with too many LOL’s for my liking, but there was an interesting question posed in there. “Is it possible to not like Gabe Kapler and still like him at the same time?”
I didn’t answer the question, because I didn’t want to continue a weird conversation on Amazon that started about dance shoes and turned into a Phillies conversation, but the question intrigued me enough to want to write this post.
And here’s the answer:
Yes. Yes it is possible.
Ironically, it’s how I feel on most days when watching the Phillies. Because I never know what Gabe I’m going to get.
There are days when I am incredibly frustrated by his managerial decisions. There are days when his lineup leaves me scratching my head. There are days when he says something at his post game press conference when I think the guy is a snake oil (coconut oil?) salesman.
And then there are times when I think he’s coming around more to my line of thinking. He leaves his best pitcher in a game, despite the fact that analytics would have had him removed an inning or two earlier. He makes a gutsy decision to go all in for a win by trotting out a starting pitcher in the 16th inning of a game on one day rest rather than resort to using a position player as a pitcher as he was wont to do earlier this season.
It’s hard to argue that the guy has done a nice enough job of being a player’s manager – at least for the younger guys in the clubhouse – to have them believing enough in themselves that they are a good team.
And although the laser light show and fog machines in the clubhouse after wins may have been a bit much, when you have a record of 57-44, are in first place and have the second-best record in the National League, it’s hard to argue against that clubhouse culture.
It’s been successful through 101 games. More successful than they could have ever imagined. And with the Washington Nationals unexpectedly coming apart at the seams, the Phillies are in this for the long haul this season. They will be in the playoff race until the final days of September.
Even though there is good fortune there, Kapler has still been at the helm of the ship and kept the boat on course, even when there were plenty of chances for it to veer completely off the map.
And yet, recognizing those things, I’m still not ready to crown him as a managerial genius or mastermind like some others are.
Take for instance:
Gabe Kapler is quickly becoming my favorite Phillies manager in my lifetime. Can't sing his praises enough. Guy's got it.
— Matt Smith (@DTMattSmith) July 25, 2018
I used to work with Matt. He’s actually a sharp baseball mind, even if he does wade a little too deeply in the deep end of the fancy stats pool.
But let’s slow the eff down with this take.
He hasn’t even earned his first playoff berth and Matt’s got him ahead of the guy who won five consecutive division titles and a world championship? Chill out buddy.
But he isn’t alone:
Are you ready to join WIP Evenings’s official Gabe Kapler fan club… “Gabe’s Guys?” #GabesGuys
— WIP Evening Show (@WIPEvenings) July 25, 2018
I guess women aren’t allowed to like baseball or support the manager… but I digress….
The point is, becoming a blind loyalist at this point is dumb. Likewise, being a cantankerous grumbling curmudgeon who hates Gabe just because he’s different from what you are used to is pretty dumb too:
Is Gabe Kapler winning games for the Phillies because of analytics. or despite them? What statistical analysis supports the insane way he used the bullpen in the past 2 games? Yet somehow he won both of them. Is he smarter than us, or just like lucky?
— Angelo Cataldi (@AngeloCataldi) June 18, 2018
To be accurate They’re Dusty’s Dudes! Kapler is a fraud.
— Chris Audesirk (@audidadx4) July 25, 2018
I really want to like Gabe kapler, but when he says the most important at bat of the game was Knapp’s 1st inning leadoff strikeout u can hear the rocks rattling in his empty head. Lol. Continues to insult our intelligence, or does he believe his nonsense. Think it’s da later
— Rick Korpics (@rpk623) July 26, 2018
Actually, this last comment isn’t that stupid. It’s pretty accurate.
Yesterday’s game featured a huge bases-clearing triple by Carlos Santana and Scott Kingery’s first home run in a month, two at bats that were infinitely more important than Andrew Knapp’s lead-off strikeout.
Knapp’s at bat was as good as an at bat can be for a strikeout, but it was still a strikeout. It was ultimately unproductive.
Yes, it was 13 pitches. Yes getting the starter out of the game earlier is a good thing. However, there were other long at bats prior to Walker Buehler leaving the game. For example, Rhys Hoskins worked the count full before he hit his solo homer in the very next at bat after Knapp.
What Kapler was really saying with his comments in that tweet above was an “eff you” to the critics who wonder why Knapp is leading off in the first place.
He’s now 1-for-8  with no walks and three strikeouts in two games leading off, so depending on how you measure success will depend on what you think of those numbers, but to me, they aren’t good and he isn’t a good option there – especially when your lead-off hitter has the most plate appearances in a game.
So his comments were self-serving. They were his way of justifying why he thinks he’s smarter than you. Rather than ignore it, or simply say something like, “Hey, I know we didn’t get the result we wanted but working a 13-pitch at bat to lead off the game really set the tone for us for the rest of the day,” which would have been more than justifiable, he went all-in on his take that it was the most important at bat of the game.
We aren’t dumb Gabe. We know the game too. We recognize it for what it was. Don’t make it out to be more because it makes you look good.
But it’s not just his post game “everything is awesome” commentary that gets under my skin. I at least understand the rationale behind it. Protect your players and they will be more willing to run through a brick wall for you.
That’s Gabe’s greatest strength so far – having his finger on the pulse of most of the locker room (I say “most” because I’m sure there are veterans in there who don’t completely buy in to his approach).
But his reluctance to try anything different to fix the defensive woes of this team is an example of his stubbornness that his way is the best way.
According to Sports Info Solutions The Phillies dead last in defensive runs saved and in defensive runs saved by shifting:
Most Defensive Runs Saved – 2018 Season
Brewers 93 Diamondbacks 89 Braves 49 Cubs 43 Yankees 40 Marlins 38 Astros 37
Fewest Phillies -80 Orioles -70 Mets -60
— Sports Info Solutions (@SportsInfo_SIS) July 24, 2018
This is partly because the players have been atrocious, but this is also partly because they are playing out of position so much in their position.
In other words, shifting is one thing, extreme shifting is something else.
Against Baltimore, Maikel Franco had to make a game-saving diving stop on Chris Davis on a ground ball that would have been a routine play if he was playing in his normal position. But he wasn’t:
The very next day, Kapler not only continued that shift, but got more extreme, putting all four Phillies infielders on the same side of the diamond.
Granted, it didn’t hurt, as Davis struck out each time he came to the plate, because he stinks, but the fact is, this play aside, the Phillies are often left to mentally make adjustments on balls that would normally be routine.
It has plagued them consistently. It’s why they are last in baseball in defensive runs saved from shifting.
Maybe don’t shift so far. Maybe shift a little bit. And really, do we need four infielders on the same side of the diamond, three isn’t enough? Is the range of Carlos Santana (former gold glove winner) Cesar Hernandez and Scott Kingery that bad?
And how about this hit by Joc Pederson in the loss to the Dodgers on Monday:
If Kingery is only shifting a little bit, and isn’t completely on the other side of the bag, this is a double play ground out, Seranthony Dominguez likely doesn’t have his worst outing of the season, and the Phillies potentially sweep the Dodgers.
But, no.
This is the thing that has bothered me the most with Kapler. He’s settled down with the bullpen to get it into a position where it’s doing well now with defined roles. Small hiccups like Knapp leading off aside, the lineup has settled down too without too much jockeying around. (I’d still swap Santana and Hoskins so there is a better chance of runners being on base for Hoskins, but that’s mostly nit-picky), and as I mentioned before, he’s got the team believing in itself, which is all good.
But when he digs his heels in, he really becomes an immovable object, even if there is plenty of evidence to the contrary.
I can find dozens of examples like the videos above from this season. And sure, there are times the shift works. I’m not anti-shifting. But when you’re one of only two teams in the negative on runs saved by shifting, you are either shifting at the wrong times or shifting too frequently, or over-shifting specific batters, or some combination of the three.
And the Phillies don’t seem to be trying anything different there at all.
That bugs me. And it bugs me how they spin it.
Fix the defense, fix how you present it publicly, and I can probably get on board with the manager and move forward.
Until then, I’m gonna stick by my long-existing belief that managers can’t win games, but they can certainly lose them.
In the interim, I’ll applaud Gabe for getting the team to where they are right now. I’ll give him his credit when and where it is due. But, I also won’t stop pointing out mistakes either. As Bob Wankel likes to say on our Crossed Up podcast, “If you want to hear someone always piss positive about Gabe and the Phillies, there are plenty of living, breathing smiley faces out there for you to listen to, watch and read.”
But my warning to you is that blind loyalty is a dangerous premise for sports fans. As such, you won’t find that here.
And oh yeah, you also won’t find me championing Gabe as the greatest manager of my lifetime anytime soon either.
The scale and therefore the volume of sinkers put for the fishing line relies upon within the depths of the drinking water.
A person fishing with bait might be clever to apply a bobber or some type of indicator whilst fishing. It can be hard to explain to whenever you obtain a chunk from time to time, plus a beneficial indicator will stop that obstacle. Pick one which is quickly obvious to you personally around the floor on the water.
For those who are anxious regarding the conservation of fish, then you definitely could continually catch them, and launch them back to the h2o. With Yankees and Crimson Sox stacked, MLB groups ought to raid the remainder of the AL East
The Boston Crimson Sox are the defending AL East champs. They have a younger and dynamic core, have solely Drew Pomeranz and Craig Kimbrel as pending free brokers in 2018, and look poised to contend for division crowns for years to come back.
The New York Yankees fell simply in need of the World Collection final season. Aaron Choose, Gary Sanchez, and Luis Severino comprise one of the electrical teams of homegrown expertise within the sport, and so they simply added defending NL MVP Giancarlo Stanton to the combination. They too determine to be harmful for some time, with a mix of youth, expertise and cash that is robust to beat.
With these AL East powerhouses wielding extra youth, extra expertise and more cash than their AL East rivals, baseball’s intelligentsia has began advising the Jays, Orioles and Rays to promote their greatest high-priced commodities for youthful gamers with upside.
For the report, we agree. The Orioles may make a last-ditch effort to contend subsequent season earlier than Manny Machado, Adam Jones, Zach Britton, Brad Brach and others check free company … however a woeful lack of beginning pitching makes promoting the wiser alternative. The Rays hung across the fringes of wild-card rivalry for a lot of final season and most of their greatest gamers are underneath 30 … however they will additionally seemingly lose Alex Cobb and Logan Morrison to free company this winter, have expressed curiosity in additional curbing payroll and have a number of extremely marketable gamers they might store. The Jays made back-to-back ALCS appearances in 2015 and 2016, they’ve led the AL in attendance in every of the previous two seasons and so they suffered by way of so many accidents and a lot unhealthy luck final 12 months pure bounce-back must be anticipated … however additionally they employed the oldest group of place gamers within the majors final season, a nasty signal for a group hoping to make an enormous leap.
If the O’s, Rays and Jays do resolve to pursue veterans-for-youth offers, they will have loads of suitors for his or her greatest out there gamers. This is a rundown of these gamers, and the groups most definitely to hitch the bidding for his or her providers, in the event that they grow to be out there.
The Orioles are mentioned to be listening to provides for Manny Machado.  USATSI
Manny Machado, 3B/SS, Orioles
Suitors: Cardinals, Angels, Phillies
Baltimore’s ubertalented 25-year-old star has one 12 months left earlier than he can begin fielding free-agent provides that might simply prime $300 million. Given the conservative strategy that the Angelos household and GM Dan Duquette have deployed in recent times, it is almost inconceivable to think about Machado re-signing with the O’s, now or subsequent winter. With few viable pitching choices for subsequent season past Kevin Gausman and Dylan Bundy, it is also robust to think about the Orioles vying for an AL East crown in Machado’s final 12 months on the town. So the commerce rumors now swirling round Machado make tons of sense.
Additionally making sense: The Cardinals as a extremely celebration. St. Louis hung round in rivalry for a lot of final season earlier than fading late, and was an aggressive bidder within the Giancarlo Stanton sweepstakes. Machado is a special type of participant than Stanton and performs a special place, however he’d nonetheless give the Playing cards an enormous increase at both third base or shortstop, with 2017 rookie standout Paul DeJong manning whichever place Machado would not take. Machado slumped badly within the first three months of final season, weighing down his end-of-year outcomes. However he is nonetheless a dynamic energy supply in his personal proper who’d be an MVP-caliber participant if he reverts again to his 2015-2016 kind. Baltimore’s determined for younger beginning pitching and the Playing cards have extra of it than nearly every other group, with Luke Weaver, Alex Reyes, and Jack Flaherty heading the group’s record of thrilling arms.
The Angels haven’t got anyplace close to that type of prospect energy, however Andrew Heaney and Tyler Skaggs no less than supply expertise and a number of years of group management, albeit with much less upside and extra harm issues than, say, Weaver. In the meantime the Phillies would see Machado as extra of a long-term play, and would seemingly attempt to work out a long-term extension in the event that they had been to pursue him; do not wager on Machado giving up his shot at a large free-agent bidding battle, although.
Josh Donaldson might have carried out all that he can do in Toronto for the Blue Jays.  USATSI
Josh Donaldson, 3B, Blue Jays
Suitors: Yankees, Cardinals, Angels
It wasn’t anyplace close to as horny a transfer because the Stanton rating, however GM Brian Cashman foisting Chase Headley and his total $13 million wage on the Padres was an enormous coup in its personal proper, giving the Yankees about $27 million in wiggle room underneath the posh tax as they attempt to fill out their roster. Headley’s departure, together with 2017 deadline pickup Todd Frazier hitting the open market, does imply that the Yanks might want to discover a third baseman this winter. Re-signing Frazier might be the trail of least resistance, given Frazier’s mixture of energy, affordability, and his zeal for enjoying in New York.
The Bombers may suppose greater, although. And with Peter Angelos reportedly blanching at any commerce situation that sends Machado to the Bronx, Donaldson might be a hell of a backup plan. The 32-year-old former MVP missed 49 video games final season, however nonetheless posted his traditional monstrous offensive numbers. He is now not a Gold Glove-quality third baseman, however nonetheless profiles as a plus defender who would additionally make New York’s lineup much more terrifying. The Cardinals have been serious about Donaldson for some time and will renew their efforts to land him this winter. The Jays’ tenuous place — a veteran-laden group only a 12 months faraway from a playoff run, with a rabid however context-sensitive fan base which may not be as keen to click on the turnstiles and purchase big foam fingers if Donaldson and others get shipped out of city — complicates issues significantly.
We might need to get used to seeing Evan Longoria in a special uniform.  USATSI
Evan Longoria, 3B, Rays
Suitors: Yankees, Cardinals, Angels, Giants, Braves
As soon as an MVP contender in his personal proper, Longoria’s clearly within the decline section of his profession at age 32. However, $86 million over the following 5 years for a participant of his talent stage is not too onerous, particularly if Longoria’s near-term future seems to be extra seemingly his 2016 (.273/.318/.521) than his 2017 efficiency (.261/.313/.424). Longoria rated as a top-five defender at his place in 2017 and will see his numbers perk up significantly away from Tropicana Subject, a ballpark that completely squashes right-handed energy hitters.
All of these components make him an intriguing commerce candidate for any variety of groups — apparent suitors just like the Yankees and Playing cards, but in addition talent-starved golf equipment just like the Giants and Braves which have black holes at third base, and cash to spend. New Atlanta GM Alex Anthopoulos has by no means been shy about making splashy strikes too. The larger query is whether or not the Rays will commerce the perfect participant in franchise historical past only a 12 months into what the group may need hoped can be the deal that might carry Longoria all the best way into retirement. That Tampa Bay may flirt with wild-card rivalry with somewhat luck and a few well-placed strikes makes a Longoria blockbuster much more doubtful.
Others who might be in play if their groups dive into promote mode:
Chris Archer, SP, Rays Alex Colome, RP, Rays Adam Jones, OF, Orioles Zach Britton, RP, Orioles Brad Brach, RP, Orioles J.A. Happ, SP, Jays Roberto Osuna, SP, Jays
There’s a lot on the market for relief-hungry groups to buy this winter, with Wade Davis and Greg Holland heading a category that continues to be deep even with high quality arms like Mike Minor and Brandon Morrow already securing new gigs. Groups on the lookout for aid assist with out the burden of a multi-year deal for giant bucks may pursue the commerce route, although, with Britton and Brach as doubtlessly cheaper one-year leases, and Colome coming off a league-leading 47 saves, albeit with an oddly diminished strikeout price. The Astros, Dodgers, Rockies, Twins and Diamondbacks are all 2017 playoff golf equipment actively on the lookout for high quality relievers, although veteran right-hander Pat Neshek signing with the last-place Phillies this week reminds us that any and each group might be in play. The Jays have been reluctant to dangle Roberto Osuna up to now and will have missed their splendid commerce window anyway, if Osuna’s summer time of ’17 woes carry over into subsequent season.
Archer touchdown with the Cubs nearly makes an excessive amount of sense. He was the linchpin of a multiplayer deal again in 2011, one which noticed Archer and a number of other different proficient younger gamers go to the Rays, with Matt Garza shipped to the North Aspect; Cubs supervisor Joe Maddon clearly is aware of Archer effectively too. The 4 years and $34 million Archer has left on his long-term deal make him top-of-the-line bargains in all of baseball, although after all that solely incentivizes the Rays to maintain him, except a bidder makes a big supply. Happ might be a strong backup plan for the Cubs, and he’d additionally make sense for the Astros (Lance McCullers and Charlie Morton are harm dangers), Yankees (it will get awfully skinny after Luis Severino, Masahiro Tanaka, and Sonny Grey), Crimson Sox (David Worth insurance coverage), Mariners, Brewers and Twins. Jones wasn’t something particular final 12 months at .285/.322/.466 with sub-par protection in middle discipline, however he might be an fascinating get for an outfield-needy group like Cleveland, given Michael Brantley’s ongoing harm issues.
