Exotic Temples of Kerala
Kerala has a very rich cultural and religious history. Till the period of the ‘Cherans’, Kerala and Tamil Nadu shared a mutually complementing history. Up to the third century, Kerala mainly adopted the Tamil culture to an extent. Many cave temples are found across Kerala that attribute their architecture and aesthetics to Tamil temple discipline. Kerala formed its unique and indigenous architecture in the later centuries. Kerala’s unique temple architecture arose from the old residential architecture. The highlights of Kerala’s unique temple architecture was strict adherence to the beauty of nature, simplicity and sanctity, and the quiet and calming ambiance. Kerala’s temple architecture is special and unseen anywhere in the Indian sub-continent or the rest of the world. Most of the earlier temples were devoted to/cornered by Bhagawathi and Shiva deities, and these temples are still the majority of what we have today. Shastha temples come second in the number of devoted temples.
Tourists and visitors often claim to have experienced an unnatural soothing vibe or different world experience while roaming around these temple precincts. The lost-in-time architectural techniques are the possible explanation of this. Anyway, renovations to the old architecture is a constant process. We still have to see how much of the old ambiance is lost after all these hefty renovations.
The modernization of temples is so widespread that we now have Online Pooja Booking in Kerala. Many temples now have websites that allow devotees to book Poojas online. Dattanjaneya temple, one of the most renowned temples in Aluva is one of the predecessors of this online movement.

In Dire Times
Passing through Aluva, I throng to have a view of the Aluva Manappuram from the train window. Here thousands of people come to offer final rites for their departed soul. And it’s a place bustling with cacophony on Shiva Ratri. The sandbank along the temple serves as a pious place. And during the monsoons when heavy rains strikes, the sand bank becomes submerged and invisible only to rise a few…
