in my mind palace thinking about eugene making a habit of visiting leckie's tent at night with the excuse that he's there for the coffee and the books but it's really mostly to talk to leckie... growing closer to him... trading stories about home and sid. what the war is like. leckie telling him about the shit they got up to, about melbourne, being in the brig, which officers/marines he has beef with, his time in banika etc. eugene mentions d-day was last month here so this was somewhere in july and they left for peleliu at the end of august, which leaves them in pavuvu for around a month... plenty of time to become friends and get attached! and them picking it back up when the war's over, exchanging letters. leckie realizing how much eugene was changed by the war, eugene with a better understanding of why leckie was the way he was. anyway!!! them.

Based on the discussion over the last couple of days, I feel like Drarry fandom has become very...dour? It seems people are bothered that not everyone on here wants angsty enemies to lovers stories all the time?

Draco's redemption is an important aspect of his character and has been brilliantly explored in hundreds, probably thousands of fics and I've read and enjoyed many of them. But, my god, sometimes I want to read something light or I don't have the time to invest in reading 50k+ words about how Harry is finally seeing Draco as more than just a Death Eater. Sometimes I want to see them just be together without the author feeling the need to insert a tangent about what a good boy Draco has been since the War and how he's totally changed now. I can infer that from the fact that Harry has chosen to be with him, he can tell the right sort for himself, you know?

It's as if we're not allowed to say we enjoy Draco as a character unless we explicitly put him through emotional and moral hell first. Also, I feel like by focusing so much on Draco's character arc, we tend to forget that Harry also has shit to work through, beyond needing to accept that he wants to bone Malfoy now.

This is not about calling anyone out, it's just a general trend I've been noticing with the fic and commentary that's been coming out lately. We can enjoy Drarry, but there always needs to be an asterisk to it, always. Have you noticed this or is it just me using the wrong filters/being in the wrong bubble/losing my mind?

I'm going to be honest with you here friend, I had no idea this was happening. I generally tend to stay away from, like, confrontational corners of the fandom (on account of I really don't have the constitution for it), but I know that sometimes these things have a way of reaching you even when you're not looking for them. For your peace of mind, I recommend maybe trying to curate your fandom experience to be less stressful to you because at the end of the day this is supposed to be fun. If you already are and it's not working, I'm fresh out of sage advice :(.

I do see the trend you've mentioned, I think it comes from attaching too many IRL things to a fictional world and adding complexities where there aren't, sometimes it enriches the fandom experience and sometimes it causes people to judge individual characters too harshly. I am but a passing ship in the turbulent waters of the marauders era fandom but it's something I especially notice there, with strictly segregated factions who each have very exacting parameters.

The problem with fandom squabbles like these is that no-one is wrong because we all are; we're all seeing things that aren't there in a series of books written by a terrible person; for all that we can share the joy of flipping the script on jkr, the fandom is never going to be totally unified because we're all making shit up as we go.

I also don't enjoy overly angsty fics where Draco has to martyr himself in order to be redeemed, because the Draco in my head doesn't need to do all that. The beauty (and curse) of a ship as big as Drarry is that there's multiple accepted interpretations of Harry, Draco and their relationship; hell, there's some fics where I feel like the author just slapped the names Harry and Draco on two OCs and called it a day but that just means said works weren't meant for me.

Curating our fandom experience as best as possible is really the only thing we as readers can do; one of the best strategies I've adapted is starting to exit out of fics the moment I realise they aren't working for me. I don't know how many fics I had to force myself to slog through because they are beloved classics, hoping I'd also see what everyone else is seeing, only to learn I should have trusted my instincts and abandoned ship. Ultimately I had to learn to stick with what works for me, even if it means there's significantly less fandom output I get to enjoy.

fun rpf stuff aside (though I'm totally fine with whatever people believe as long as no one bothers actors in real life), does it seem to you like Jacob and Sam have an unusual friendship? Or am I, as a woman, just not well-versed in guy friendships? But it seems like everyone around them agrees that they have an unusual friendship too? Thinking of Eric talking about them every chance he gets lol, and Rolin saying that he wrote a scene into the script specifically for the two of them that came out of their bond. They just seem to genuinely have so much affection for each other and they express it openly, and they talk about how much time they spend talking, and that all seems so beautifully sincere and the opposite of trying to be macho or whatever. I love it.

I don't know, I don't know either of them of course, but I think there's probably a lot of factors at play. I think true creative partnerships can often be pretty intense and binding, and that does seem to be the way they've both approached their work on the show and how they've felt about building Louis and Lestat as both individual characters, and as the show's big, beating, bloody heart. It also seems to have influenced how they choose to be leads on set.

Crews will usually say that a culture on set starts from the top of the callsheet, which I imagine would be Jacob at 1, Sam at 2, and they both seem to take that seriously as well. Eric's talked about that, as you said, but Roxane actually talked about how much they look after each other and the energy they bring to set quite a bit in her interview with Autumn too, which was lovely. So yeah, I think how they've chosen to create together plays a role. I also think timing probably had a bit to do with it too. Jacob's joked a few times that he and Sam are trauma bonded, which makes sense given the casting process and filming s1 all happened during the COVID lockdowns, so it was a fractuous time anyway and they were probably in a cast bubble, which I imagine added to the sense of shared experience.

I also think it probably helped that they were in pretty similar places career-wise when they started on the show. They were both fairly established in their local contexts (Jacob in the UK, Sam in Australia), but less so internationally and I think that probably a) put them both on a level footing from the get-go, b) gave them both a shared sense of what this opportunity was, and c) that their professional lives have made this pretty significant change together.

Plus, y'know, they just seem to really like each other, which is a lovely thing. So yeah! I think their friendship is something special, and whether that's a result of their personalities, the context of the last few years, or something else, who knows? I'm just glad we get to watch the result of it, haha.

Ah, the humble Unique Mushroom. The one thing that united all Hunters and Riders of Venalos, the gathering of which began countless careers filled with perils and excitement.

Safine rose to her full height; a pink, spindly mushroom with a round cap pinched between her fingers. It was a diminutive thing, really, yet she nonetheless smiled as she brought it to her nose and took in its one-of-a-kind aroma, her mouth already watering. The smell of it alone, the source of its name, was whetting her appetite like nothing else. She tossed the tiny fungus into her foraging bag, filled with several dozen more delectable mushrooms.

The Shrine Ruins were the perfect environment for fungi to proliferate; not too hot, not too cold, not too wet, and not too dry. The temperate mountains and bamboo forests were also home to various wild beasts capable of wielding lightning, the shocks of which excited the fruiting bodies to grow even more with the monsters' passing.

... Safine never could wrap her head around the mystery of why electricity made mushrooms grow better.

She shrugged to herself. Regardless, pondering the biology of mushrooms was not why she had come to these oh so familiar hunting grounds, as her bag would reveal. No, today she had decided to spoil herself, going out to the field in order to collect some fungal delicacies for a truly tasty meal. She even went out of her way to track down Choice Mushrooms and Pricey Shrooms -- variants of the Unique Mushroom somehow even better in taste and aroma -- for the simple reason of wanting to.

Safine passed under a dilapidated torii, its once bright red having been faded away over the decades, as she left the passage leading up to the peak of the Shrine Ruins' central mountain, along which the mushroom delicacies grew best. She then passed by the equally weathered walls that contained the area's namesake shrines, a hand trailing across the cracked wall as she walked. A breeze drifted through the towering bamboo, soughing through the vibrant green leaves. Safine paused, her hand now resting against the wall, and she closed her eyes.

The Shrine Ruins were old. Older than she can imagine. A land once ruled by people, their hubris inciting the wrath of the kami and sending them away, now overtaken again by nature (though, of course, she knew now that the people were driven away by god-like dragons, not actual gods). As her eyes remained shut, her other senses took in everything. Her skin could feel the cool breeze and ancient stone. Her ears took note of the rustling of bamboo leaves and the skittering of tiny creatures. Her nose sensed the traces of wild beasts carried by the pure air. Then she opened her eyes again, which saw the vibrant life all around her.

Safine sighed a content sigh. And, very soon, her tongue shall taste the bounties of the Shrine Ruins!

She resumed walking beneath the bamboo canopy, an airy and almost careless skip in her every step.
