I hate most Asha redesigns because they take away all of Asha's North African details like her box braids and cornrows and donxt even SHOW them the color purple! They act like Asha committed copyright infringement I against Isabella just for a color 🙄😒

By their logic, Elsa shouldn't be blonde and wear blue because that's Cindy's color, even tho her dress is silver and they're different shades of blonde.

Jokes aside, most Asha redesigns I see tend to just give her a different outfit to show off her north african and amazingh heritage which were lacking in the final design, which I do not opposed.

The real issue is not how she looks, but how she's characterized in fanworks. Basically given a different personality and even a different name. No shade to that one artist, but like just make your own story and not call it a Wish rewrite.

The Asha's in fanworks only take after surface level traits like her being black, her name and being the protagonist but rarely her personality and motivations.

Asha is already mischaracterized by media illiterate idiots who didn't payed attention to the movie and it certainly didn't helped that in most fanworks from what I can see, she is relegated to Starboy's girlfriend and a vector for authors to insert themselves into.

The self insertion of Asha semi relates to how she is made to be "less black" with some reworks where she's Magnifico's daughter is just ew. Like, I understand the "potential" rift in the story if this were legit but like, there are bigger priorities here that needed to be looked upon than a version of Wish that does not exist. This is just accidental whitewashing at best and insensitive at worst.

This is eerily similar to characters like Blaise Zabini from Harry Potter, being treated like blank slate for authors to make a "token good mate" Slytherin character til he was revealed to be a black just as bad as the rest of Slytherin.

These people don't care about these characters and the present stories, they care more about the potential of the idea of a concept of a story. Hence why some fanworks tend to be based on a version of the canon story but slight changes based on things what the author likes, because they weren't present in the original.

I am not opposed to rewriting stories with including things from other works that I like. I am not one to dictate wether what you can and can't do to your work. However, I do not like and endorse the behavior some fans have that a work with crap they like is better than those that don't have them.

And characters like Blaise and Asha are examples of this. Being rewritten to suit the author's taste. But that means taking away what makes them recognizable.

Questions for people that watched Wish

Wasn’t Asha being promoted as Afro-Latina. I mean I never saw the movie, but I remember a lot of people that she was Afro Latina. But, on Tumblr at least, I’ve seen that the movie takes place in North Africa, cause she’s Amazingh/Imazingh. That’s really cool cause the culture’s really cool, and not a lot of people know much about it, or that it exists.

But both times I’ve seen her mentioned as Amazingh, it was in concept art. So was she only North African in concept art, or actually in the movie?

And if she is North African, and if my memories correct, Disney messed up in more ways than one, cause I never heard any thing about that till this week

I’ll probably pirate the movie, but just a question.

There’s something magical in this whole segment when we try to think about the functions of the doors. The doors are a sign of a very visual power, that one has a part of the Casita accustomed to your own powers, personality, and needs — that, ultimately you are part of the family.

However, with Mirabel she doesn’t get that. The entire Casita, even the entire valley if one would guess judging by the magic that flowed through the town, is her home. There isn’t a portion of the Casita that isn’t influenced by her and the spirit of Pedro that she represents.

Mirabel is the embodiment and soul of what it means to be a Madrigal. She embodies what the Miracle was created for in the first place.
